POLICE WEEK OF ACTION!
Thirty-five people arrested as force cracks down on criminal activity in south Sefton Report by Tom Martin
Police on patrol in south Sefton
A TOTAL of 35 people were arrested over the course of just seven days after police carried out a number of search warrants across south Sefton following a spate of shootings in the area. Merseyside Police called the crackdown on crime, a ‘Week of Action’, and targeted gun gangs, scrambler bikes and anti-social behaviour in an effort to reassure concerned residents. There have been ten shootings in the last six months in Litherland, Seaforth, Netherton and Bootle, the most recent being when 21year-old Miguel Reynolds was shot dead in Netherton on Thursday, June 7. Last week, a total of 34 warrants were carried out at properties in south Sefton suspected of being involved in criminality, and six areas of land were searched following information coming in from the community, including North Park, Bootle Golf Course and Rimrose Valley Park. The disused railway line at Akenside Street in Bootle, and the railway embankment off King Street were also searched, with the assistance of British Transport Police. The 35 people arrested were taken to police stations for a variety of offences including drugs, theft, and money laundering as well as
recalls to prison. The Community Policing Team has been conducting patrols assisted by representatives from Sefton Council, social landlords and Environmental Health. Officers have also been speaking to residents about their concerns at a series of mobile police stations across the area, and the force’s Mounted Section have been out on patrol every day of the Week of Action. Superintendent Matt Boyle said: “I want to reassure residents that we will not tolerate those people who continue to make life difficult for decent people in our communities, and we are working with partner agencies on activities such as those that are taking place all week to ensure our communities are safe places to live and our parks can be enjoyed by all. “We will continue to take action whenever the community tells us there are problems. “I would appeal to anyone with information about gun crime, anti-social behaviour, and illegal or nuisance scrambler bikes in their areas to get in touch with us and I can assure them that we will take action. “We will be concentrating on areas where people have told us they are suffering the effects of this behaviour. “While we have focussed our efforts to combat crime in Sefton this week, we conduct patrols in the area all year-round and encourage anyone with any information about crime in their community to contact us.”
