N ortheastern Laos is home to the Xieng Khouang Plateau, an area that has borne witness to (and the brunt of) the ambitions of various peoples who have dominated the area. History blends here in a juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern; in the glorious and tragic. Visiting the area, journey through the many layers of the past from prehistoric times to the modern era. The story of Xieng Khouang is also the story of Laos. A still-unknown ancient people created the impressive stone jars as early as 1200 BCE, which UNESCO recently declared a World Heritage Site. Further study is underway, working to shed light on this mysterious civilization. Several thousand years later the Phouan people entered the region from the north. Adopting Buddhism, they built beautiful temples and stupas around the area. In the late 1880s, bandits fleeing unrest in China descended south wreaking havoc throughout the land. Many temples were desecrated and looted for their precious gold. This gave France an opportunity to step in and include Laos as part of its new protectorate: Indochina. A few decades later, Laos’ new independence was destabilized by the Cold War and Xieng Khouang was heavily bombed. Now, the country is embarking on a new peaceful trajectory of renewal and renovation. Visit Xieng Khouang and fall in love with its many layers.

A s travelers in Laos and around the world, it’s important to be considerate about our role in the ecosystem. To be responsible travelers, we must understand the risks and how to prevent them to minimize our footprints. It also involves being conscientious of how our actions impact the health of other people, plants, animals, and the environment we share.
3. Get a guide. Your journey will be more entertaining and informative if you hire a local guide. This will also support the local economy. Look for packaged tours that include local accommodation, meals, and guides.
5. Avoid wild flora and fauna. Wildlife has a significant role in the food chain. They help to balance the ecosystem within the forests. The loss and extinction of many species due to poaching can lead to dangerous ecological imbalances and the spread of diseases. Take steps to ensure that your interactions with people and animals are safe to minimize the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. It only takes one infected traveler to alter the health of many – don’t let that be you! How can I travel responsibly?

Lao Friends Hospital for Children is the only free children’s hospital in Laos and the only pediatric hospital in the north. It is 100% privately funded. L ao Friends Hospital for Children is delighted to announce that the 8th Luang Prabang half-marathon, Run for Children, will take place on October 30, 2022, in Luang Prabang. This is the first time LFHC has been able to organize the event since the pandemic, and it will be fantastic to see over 2000 people running through the cultural center of Laos. This run is beautiful in landscape and spirit and has a palpable sense of community.

ment that sees 150 children per day, a state-ofthe-art neonatal unit that provides care to babies as small as 700 grams, a dedicated thalassemia (a disorder that requires monthly blood transfusions) clinic that treats 200 children per month, and a brand new High Acuity Unit (HAU) that provides free treatment to the very sickest children in northern Laos. The HAU at Lao Friends Hospital is the only free facility of its kind in the entire country.
Run for Children is an excellent opportunity to support the work being done at LFHC and be part of a unique community event in Luang Prabang. Every step you take towards the finish line helps LFHC in its goal to save as many children as they possibly can!
LFHC is also home to the only free Development Clinic in northern Laos that provides care and treatment to children with developmental delays, autism, and Down syndrome. The LFHC outreach team traveled over 23,000 kilometers in 2021, visiting 309 patients despite the lockdown severely impacting travel. Outreach ensures that patients who are too sick to travel or can’t afford the journey to LFHC receive the healthcare they need and deserve.
Education is one of the cornerstones of Lao Friends Hospital for Children. There is a strong internal teaching program as well as a growing external training emphasis. The hospital invites hundreds of students from universities and colleges in Luang Prabang and Vientiane to train with the LFHC team. LFHC also conducts training sessions with local health centers to decentralize knowledge from the cities and improve healthcare quality in rural communities. The hospital has just hired a director of prevention to try to research and reduce stunted growth and malnutrition-related maladies in the surrounding rural communities and to implement a program to help reduce the number of cases.
A quote is engraved above the entrance to Lao Friends Hospital for Children. It reads, “treat every child as if they were your own.” These are the words of Japanese photographer Kenro Izu who first had the idea for the hospital when he saw a father lose his 7-year-old daughter because he could not afford the $2 cost of her medicine. The LFHC staff embody this quote daily by providing compassionate healthcare to any child who needs it.

DO Handle Buddha images or sacred objects with respect; avoid placing them in inappropriate places (on the floor for example). Women in shorts or short skirts are required to put on a Lao skirt as a top layer before entering religious or culturally important places. Before entering a Lao person’s home, take your shoes off and leave them outside the house or on stairs. Dress conservatively – tank tops and bikinis are not appropriate attire to wear in villages or in town.

A fter 2 years of pared-down festivities due to the pandemic, the end of Buddhist Lent and Boun Lai Heua Fai (Fireboat Festival) will be in full swing this year after the country opened its borders in May. The full moon marking the end of Buddhist Lent will fall on October 10th this year, with the Fireboat Festival held the following evening. This is the most charming festival by far in the Lao calendar. Festivities occur all over Laos, but the old northern capital offers the most atmospheric setting. Myriad twinkling lights set against a backdrop of gorgeous temples, quaint back streets, and historic architecture are hard to beat. Don’t forget your camera.
People also try to abstain from alcohol or meat in an attempt to emulate the ascetic life the monks lead during Lent. It is very auspicious to give alms on the morning of the full moon, pay reverence to your ancestors, and make merit for future endeavors. The streets in town are lined with devotees waiting for endless processions of monks to place sticky rice in their baskets or traditional khao tom (sticky rice and banana treat steamed in banana leaves). It’s also common to give candles, an enduring symbol of light and positivity. During the day, many locals also make and sell floating votives of brightly colored flowers, banana leaves, and candles. Buy one and join the locals as they float them in the river in the evening. At dusk, the highlight of the festival is the candlelit boat procession, held from the post office down the main street to Wat Xieng Thong. The boats are filled with candles and at the end of the evening, the ritual culminates with boats being placed in the Mekong and sailed away with the current. The stars of the parade are the boats that can be very elaborate from fire-breathing Naga serpents with real flames or creatures with articulated wings that flap up and down. The previous three months of Buddhist Lent symbolize the time when Buddha ascended to heaven to visit his mother and his return to Earth marks the end of this period which also coincides with the end of the rainy season. The Rains Retreat is a time of reflection and monks will concentrate on studying the dharma and teaching new disciples. The end of Buddhist Lent marks the end of an austere period and is joyous and happy. Normal life resumes and wedding season can begin. During Lent, it is seen as unlucky to host social events, move house, or get married.

At the old steps of Wat Xieng Thong, many people gather to watch the boats being placed in the Mekong and to launch their own floating votives, symbolically pushing away negative energy to the murky blackness of the river. Make a wish and hope to return to this beau tiful festival again next year.
It’s also very popular for locals to don traditional cos tumes and take selfies amongst a backdrop of twinkling lights, the abundance of warm candles makes for a flat tering softly-lit portrait. Locals often visit a circuit of the most popular and best-decorated temples: Wat Xieng Mouan with its big courtyard filled with geometric lines of colored paper lamps, Wat Choum Khong which probably has the thickest density of lanterns in town, and the huge white stupa at Wat Visoun is very evocative and atmos pheric lit up warmly by lanterns placed on its many tiers.

The Fireboat Festival is full of sights and smells, the air is redolent with the sweet smell of melting beeswax and gentle wafts of smoke. As well as the magnificent illuminated floats, people dress in traditional clothes, dancers from the theater perform tales from the Ramaya na in monkey costumes, and masses of schoolchildren in crisp white shirts join the parade each carrying a lantern.

Lao Airlines has daily flights between Vientiane and Oudomxay. Chom Ong Cave is about 45 km to the east of the city. a wasp to an underground world
Over 100 years ago in the misty mountains of rural Oudomxay Province, a Khmu villager named Chuang went hunting in the forest. He caught a wasp and tied a small piece of cotton thread onto its leg so that he could follow it to its hive full of larvae. When he reached the hive, he made an even larger discovery – a massive cave. The land nearby was well-suited for agriculture, so he convinced his village to relocate to this area. They called the cave “Chom Ong” which is Khmu for “follow a Villagerswasp.” would only enter the cave to collect guano or hunt for bats, and so Chom Ong Cave remained relatively unexplored. In 2009, an international group of scientists embarked on a project to determine the length of the cave. They hiked, camped, and explored over 16 km of caverns, which turned out to be the longest cave system in Northern Laos! CHOM S ometimes in life, one mundane task leads to something really spectacular.
To provide interpretation, protect the natural environment, and ensure the safety of the tourists, one can only enter on a guided tour. Guides are available at the park entrance and give a great introduction to the pristine formations along the path, as well as point out bat colonies roosting high in the cavern ceiling. One can easily spot stalactites, stalagmites, and draperies, but there are also some unusual shapes rich in meaning for local people. In one spot, a rock resembling a snake, or a naga serpent guardian of the underworld, pokes its head out of the ground. A few other rocks looked like a hermit meditating and a white stupa. Another formation resembles the trunk of an elephant – an ancient symbol of Laos. There are several guided tours available. The easiest course simply traverses the paved illuminated path near the entrance and back and takes about an hour. Intrepid spelunkers can opt for a longer 2 day/1 night adventure requiring flashlights and camping inside the cave during the 16 km hike to the other side. These longer tours should be booked in advance with the Tourism Information Office in Oudomxay town. This office can also assist with transport to the cave.

And now, over a century later, Chuang’s simple quest for food lead to a new home for his village and the discovery of one of Laos’ longest caves which will draw more adventurers for centuries to come. left: The paved illuminated walkway through one of the large caverns.
Recently, through financial support from the Asian Development Bank, a 60 km loop road was paved connecting Oudomxay town to Chom Ong Cave and then on to Route 13. Visitors can now visit easily as they pass from Luang Namtha, or on a day trip from Oudomxay.
