Soccer

The Varsity Soccer Team started a bit slow this fall, starting with two tough overtime losses to SLUH and CBC in the first week, followed by a run of injuries that led to early struggles over the first third of the season. But after a loss to Webster Groves on September 20th, the team rallied to win 15 straight games. The team continued to roll through the first two games of the district tournament, beating Hazelwood West 9-0 and defeating John Burroughs 3-1 to set up a rematch with SLUH for the district title. In one of the greatest games ever played at Chaminade, the teams were tied 2-2 in the final minutes of the game when Johnny Schlattman ’23 drove home the eventual game-winning goal to give Chaminade a 3-2 victory over their rival and the district championship. While the season ended in a heartbreaking loss to St. Dominic in the state tournament, the team was a great example of perseverance; overcoming early struggles to finish with a stellar 19-8-1 record and a district title.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Swimming and Diving team capped off an 11-3 regular season with a second place finish at the Class 1 State Championship. Highlights of the season included a second place finish at the Cape Rock Invite and MCC Championship. Several individuals and relays highlighted the team’s success at state. Four individuals medaled at state including Josh Schultz ’23 who finished second in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, Trey Cunneen ’24 who finished second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle, Michael Stumpf ’26 placed third in the 1M dive and Matthew Judkins ’24 was state champion in both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Matthew’s time in the 100 butterfly set a new Class 1 State record. In addition, the 400 freestyle relay team of Schultz, Cunneen, Spencer Kinsey ’26, and Judkins also finished as state champions. The team also set four new school records this season and two new pool records. It was the team’s highest finish at state in over 20 years.

Football

An important lesson for the Chaminade football season this year is that there are victories beyond those on the scoreboard. Helmed by a group of 19 seniors, some four year players and others new to the sport, the team went 3-7 this season, which would suggest an extremely disappointing year, but that record fails to exhibit the growth and commitment shown by a resilient bunch of young men. A few highlights this season were the emergence of sophomore Madden Irving as a true lead running back on our offense, amassing 1135 yards rushing this season behind an offensive line that will have three of five starters returning next year. The passing game was also productive, logging 1500+ yards through the air despite red zone struggles. Additionally, the defense earned shutouts in two of the team’s victories this season with a 34-0 victory over Soldan International and a 42-0 victory over Gateway STEM. These defensive efforts can be heavily attributed to our two leading tacklers being our Linebackers (senior LB Jordan Pettis logged over 100 total tackles this season) and a young defensive line that started inexperienced but came into its own by midseason. Most exciting was the number of young players who stepped up for the Red Devils this season, with six different freshmen and five sophomores all getting experience as Varsity starters throughout the season. The team finished with four players receiving 1st Team All-Conference recognition, another five receiving 2nd Team recognition, and ten players earning Academic All-State honors with qualifying GPAs between 3.5-4.0. Although the Red Devils fell to eventual district champion MICDS, snapping a three year streak of consecutive district championships, the future looks bright for a team that returns numerous starters on both sides of the ball with a hunger to chase a title once again.

Post-Season

Cross Country

The Cross Country team had a good off-season and a strong start to the season. In the first meet of the season, the Varsity team finished first and the Junior Varsity team placed second. With a strong senior class of 12 runners, varsity and JV continued to place well as a team at various meets throughout the season. With 29 runners on the squad, one of the captains’ goals was to have every runner finish with a personal best time this season. While we fell just short of that goal, all except six runners ran faster than they did in a previous season. This shows the commitment to growth and the focus on improvement each athlete strives for. The season was capped off with several great performances. Junior varsity placed second at the Gans Creek Classic race midway through the season. At the district meet, the team narrowly missed qualifying as a group. The team placed fifth after several of the most competitive teams in the state (Hillsboro, Festus, Webster, and Farmington). However, four individual runners earned medals and placed in the top 25, and were able to compete in the Class 4 state meet in Columbia, MO at Gans Creek. In his first race back from an injury that put him out most of the season, junior Mitch Hardeman ran an impressive race finishing 15th place with a time of 16:48 and the fastest time of the season. Other qualifiers for the state meet included junior Alex Cattoor, 17:12 (second time racing at state), Vincent Rumsey, 17:03 (first time racing at state), and Joe DiGuiseppe, 16:55 (first time racing at State). This marks the fourth season in a row where at least one member of the cross country team has qualified for the state meet.
