Charting Success for SouthCoast Business
Membership Is Key to Our Success – And Yours!
have the time or the capacity to advance business-friendly legislation, gather elected officials together or speak on behalf of 1,500 fellow businesses – but the Chamber can.
On February 9, One SouthCoast Chamber will kick off its annual membership drive, continuing until the end of the month. While the Chamber accepts and recruits new members throughout the year, the membership drive allows all of our members to help us grow and provides special incentives for joining and prizes for those who assist us.
The incentives this year for joining largely fall into the marketing category – opportunities for a member to become better known at a greatly reduced rate or even free of any charge. But the benefits do not stop there. The Chamber is built around the premise of service to members,
making our strength in numbers work for them. Most of our members are small business members, and it is around their needs that we build our programming, services and events.
As a generic business organization, we serve businesses of all types and sizes with the common goal of business growth and community betterment. We can succeed where a small business cannot in many ways, and it is through our diversity and strength of numbers that the Chamber provides relevance. Due to our size and relative strength, the Chamber has access to elected officials and decisionmakers. Small businesses rarely
As we have begun to address our strategic planning for the next three years, we harken back at each meeting and in every conversation the reality of our organization – we are nothing without our members. What that statement implies is that your membership is the sole reason we exist, and without it we can do very little indeed.
Membership must always be centered on value. For many businesses that value centers on access to other businesses as potential customers or vendors. For others, it is an expression of corporate citizenship and the strong desire to be part of something that supports their business interests and values. For still others, value is derived from involvement and relevance.
What ties all of our members together is what we call “enlightened self-interest”. We expect that our members will want and
need to get something from their membership that helps their business directly. We exist for that reason, so the questions that center around the premise “What’s in it for me?” are not only appropriate but also the right questions to ask. We delight in answering those questions, but not until we have a good understanding of a business’ goals in membership. For each business the enlightened self-interest may be a little different, but likely similar, and this Chamber wants members who can embrace the value of membership and grow in the process.
So, please, if you can, help a business who is not yet a member come to the table. Our membership drive provides extra value each year, and 100% of the new members who come into the fold do so through your work and referral. And, we will reward you for your help in growing the Chamber!
Thank you,
Mike O'Sullivan CEO

MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce Board Awarded $2.9 Million in Local and Regional Healthcare Grants
in the First Half of FY’22
This January MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce, as the lead partner for MassHire Southeast Region 6 Workforce Boards, received approval for $524,000 in funding from the Behavioral Health Partnership Expansion Grant issued by the Commonwealth Corporation (CommCorp). Working closely with organizations that offer community-based behavioral health and substance/opioid use disorder treatments, the Boards’ effort will improve the number of qualified mental health professionals throughout the Southeast Massachusetts. Composed of a multifaceted approach, the initiative includes entry-level training for unemployed individuals, career track advancements for existing workers, and funding to assist those in need of supervision hours as they work toward licensure in the behavioral and substance abuse field. A portion of the funding will also be used for strategic planning to address longstanding employee recruitment and retention challenges in the behavioral and substance/
opioid treatment sector within the workforce development areas of MassHire Greater New Bedford, Bristol, Greater Brockton and South Shore Boards.
This project is funded by a Behavioral Health Partnership Expansion Grant through the MassHealth Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Statewide Investment Program and RIZE Massachusetts Foundation, Inc. and is administered by the Commonwealth Corporation.
Dave Slutz, MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce Development Board Chair, stated, “This award will enhance our efforts in the healthcare sector and is a great extension of the current healthcare training being done regionally through The CommCorp Healthcare Workforce Hubs Grant and locally with our recent award from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide training and employment services to people and their families affected by the opioid crisis.”
Following a 6-month planning grant initiative of $19K, MassHire GNB, as the regional Workforce Board lead, was awarded $381K earlier this summer for healthcare training initiatives throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. This funding is providing cohort-based training for the direct care occupations of Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, and Medical Assistant and includes a customized workshop in cultural competency. Training for incumbent workers will focus on cultural competency and leadership development based on substantive surveys conducted throughout the region. MassHire Southeast Region 6 Career Centers have begun recruitment for these free training programs. Unemployed persons or healthcare employers interested in participating should contact Jacqueline Sylvia at (508) 979-1504 extension 116 or email jacqueline@mhgnb.com for information.
This project is funded by a Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly Workforce Success Grant (Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund
FY’20 Appropriation) through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development and is administered by the Commonwealth Corporation.
Mr. Slutz added, “This healthcare effort has positioned the Workforce Board to develop proven strategies to attract grant funding for other key training initiatives.”
In a local award, the U.S. Department of Labor earlier this year approved a two-year grant in the amount of two million dollars ($2,000,000) for MassHire GNB Workforce Board to provide training and employment services to victims of opioid abuse in the greater New Bedford area. This grant is one of three grants across
the state to address the high incidence rate of opioid abuse, which is considered a national emergency. It is designed to assist former opioid users to access training, potentially attain “recovery coach” status and enable them to work in our community helping others address their addictions. The grant also provides training funds to others who may have been affected by addiction such as family members to pursue living wage career pathways as a means of offering alternative mainstream jobs.
While the grant is under the purview of the MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce Board, the Board is working very closely with several community partners to provide outreach, counseling, and training services necessary for the road to recovery. The crucial partners are the MassHire Division of Career Services (MDCS), Positive Action Against Chemical Addiction (PAACA), Massachusetts Fishing Partnership Support Services (FPSS), Bristol County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and the City of New Bedford Health Department (NBHD).
To continue to effectively address substance abuse challenges requires a dedicated team. We are honored that the decision by the U.S. Department of Labor to award these funds is a recognition of the strong collaboration that exists among our local agencies working together to assist those ready to change their lives.
If you have been affected by the opioid crisis and would like to get trained to work in the industry to help others or work in the private sector, please call 508.203.1822 NOW. Bi-lingual assistance is available.

February 2023
In the month of February, we continue the love with a twist–a Pastel de Nata (a traditional Portuguese pastry) throwdown, a friendly “food fight” with regional sister city, New Bedford.
“Chances are good that if you live in the SouthCoast, you've been introduced to the pastel de nata — or Portuguese custard tart — and all its creamy goodness. The dangerously delicious combo of caramelized custard wrapped in a flaky puff pastry
makes them hard to resist..”
Ashley says, “So what if you were challenged to spend an entire month eating them? It's a tough job, but that is exactly what one tourism-focused team is asking Greater New Bedford and Fall River foodies to do as part of their upcoming event” (Ashley Schuler, heraldnews. com, 2023).
If you LOVE Fall River as much as we do, every month Viva Fall River curates a list of events happening in the Greater Fall River area - kick-off the year with fun January events around the city! Download a copy to stay up-to-date on all things Fall River. We cannot wait to share more of what we have planned for the year ahead!

Sarah Rose has been named to a new post, Chief Impact Officer, and will work in close partnership with UWGNB President & CEO
Michelle N. Hantman. She will be overseeing the day-today operations of United Way programs and initiatives, as well as working with Hantman to identify new community needs and to develop new programs and services. She also will work to implement new strategies and ways to finance services to make Greater New Bedford a better place to live and work for children and families, individuals and senior citizens.
Prior to joining United Way, Rose worked in leadership positions for the SouthCoast Community Foundation, the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Plimouth Patuxet Museums in Plymouth.
Katherine Furtado is the new Chief Financial and Human Resources Officer. Prior to joining United Way, she worked at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI, where she served as director of finance and operations. She previously worked as director of accounting for High Point and Affiliated Organizations, in New Bedford, and as chief financial officer at Friends Academy, in Dartmouth.
Kristine Arsenault Cunningham has been named Development Manager. Prior to that, she worked for eight years with the City of New Bedford, serving as assistant chief of staff for Mayor John Mitchell and administrative manager for the Health Department. She also worked as a client manager for The Sylvia Group, in Dartmouth, and worked for Compass Bank Savings.

Partners Insurance Group Announces Name Change to BayCoast Insurance™
the communities we serve,” said Long. “We are honored to carry on that commitment of exceptional service.”
A major announcement from one of the South Coast’s leading independent insurance agencies. Partners Insurance Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of BayCoast Bank, is changing its name to BayCoast Insurance™.
This exciting re-branding embraces the strong reputation and recognition the BayCoast name has established and continues to build within the communities it serves.
“Now is the time,” said Patrick D. Long, President and CEO of Partners Insurance Group. “For more than a decade, the BayCoast name has grown to become one of the area’s most recognizable brands. As Bay-
Coast continues to grow and thrive, so too has Partners. With our aligned mission, culture, vision and values, changing our name to BayCoast Insurance simply makes sense.”
For more than two decades, Partners Insurance Group has been providing high-quality insurance products and customized service and guidance for its customers. The agencies and families that preceded what is now BayCoast Insurance are representative of generational relationships built on trust and performance.
“We are proud of those who came before us and the reputations that they have built within
Over the past 22 years, the agency has experienced exciting growth, expanding to nine locations with the recent addition of Hadley Insurit Group of Fall River, known for its long history of industry excellence and customer satisfaction.
Long said BayCoast Insurance is proud to continue providing high-quality insurance products and personalized service that customers have come to expect.
“We’re still the same insurance agency, with the same great people,” noted Long. “Being a wholly owned subsidiary of BayCoast Bank, our new name better reflects our connection with the BayCoast brand and its
family of exceptional services. Our customers will benefit from the convenience of having access to these financial solutions, all under the BayCoast name.”
BayCoast Bank is a longstanding community savings bank, supporting the people and businesses on the South Coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In 2012, the Bank experienced its own name change from Citizens-Union Savings Bank to BayCoast Bank, re-shaping and strengthening its presence on the South Coast.
Nicholas M. Christ, President and CEO of BayCoast Bank, commented, “Partners Insurance Group has been an important part of the BayCoast family of services for over twenty years. The name change to BayCoast Insurance solidifies this.”
BayCoast Bank Announces Generous Grant for Stoico/FIRSTFED YMCA Splash Pad
It may be winter now, but by the time we’re enduring sweltering temperatures next summer, there will be an exciting new place on the South Coast to cool off.
BayCoast Bank is proud to announce a grant to support the construction of a splash pad at the Stoico/FIRSTFED YMCA in Swansea.
Members of the BayCoast Bank family, Partners Insurance Group and the Stoico/FIRSTFED YMCA recently gathered for the official groundbreaking ceremony for the 2,400 square foot splash pad, which is scheduled to open this summer.
The splash pad is a unique,
interactive playground featuring multiple spray zones, appealing to kids of all ages. Representatives from the Swansea YMCA say the splash pad will encourage socialization and is a great way for the community to come together.
“BayCoast Bank is proud to provide a grant to the Stoico/ FIRSTFED YMCA in Swansea,” said Kimberly Grandfield, Corporate Giving and Community Relations Specialist for BayCoast Bank. “The 36-acre facility, which opened in December of 2015, is a wonderful place for families to spend time together while building strong community bonds. The splash pad will be an exciting addition to the YMCA and its popular
program offerings.”
The cost of the project is estimated at $600,000. Members of the community, along with BayCoast Bank, have offered generous support, but additional donations are needed.
