Jack Rua Invitational raises over $60k to benefit Camp Jack

6

On Tuesday, September 13, People Incorporated held its annual Jack Rua Invitational at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth. The golf tournament raises funds to support the Jack Rua Camp for Children with Diabetes, a program of the Diabetes Association, Inc., which is an affiliate organization of People Incorporated. With over 60 sponsors, the event raised over $60,000, which will go directly into operating “Camp Jack” each summer. After registration of the 116 golfers, a strong turnout in spite of showers and storms that dissipated by noon, the day began with a grilled lunch followed by a shotgun start of the scramble tournament. Along with other on-course challenges, the tournament featured two hole-in-one contests: a $10,000 prize sponsored by Rua-Dumont-Audet Insurance Agency at Hole #15 and a free car sponsored by Toyota of Dartmouth at Hole #5.

NBHS Academy of Information Technology Earns Distinguished Status guidance and internship opportunities. “We are fortunate to have highly engaged advisory committee partners to support our IT Academy, said Cummings. “Their active participation and support were key in our receiving this most prestigious recognition,” he added.

The New Bedford High School Academy of Information Technology, affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF), has been recognized as a distinguished national high school program, it was announced at the NAF national summer conference in Dallas, Texas. The IT Academy, one of several programs part of New Bedford High’s Career Vocational Technical Education (CVTE) offerings, joins Finance as the school’s second NAF Academy to be recognized as a distinguished program. The designation was determined based on an evaluation and visit to NBHS by NAF officials in which they reviewed the facilities, interviewed school stakeholders, reviewed documentation and observed classes. “I am thrilled that our Academy of IT has been recognized as distinguished, a milestone that 8

was made possible through the work of our outstanding teachers, students and IT industry partners,” said Bernadette Coelho, Principal of New Bedford High School. “Having two distinguished academies demonstrates the vibrancy of our CVTE programs, and we appreciate NAF’s continued recognition of our innovative practices.” The distinguished designation represents the highest level of achievement for a NAF academy. New Bedford High School’s Academy of IT was one of 181 programs recognized in the nation, according to NAF’S recent press release announcing the designees. The process to determine distinguished level includes evaluations and a site visit to assess program quality. NAF officials engaged with a cross section of teachers, students, finance industry advisory committee members and administrators during the NBHS visit.

“Our recent NAF site visit provided the opportunity for the IT Academy to showcase its innovation, creativity and advanced technical skills,” said Chris Cummings, manager of CVTE programs, noting that teachers from all areas met with NAF officials to discuss how they collaborate with IT Academy staff to develop and implement projects across multiple disciplines. “The evaluators were impressed with the rich cross-curricular integration,” he added. One of the criteria in determining a distinguished NAF program is an active advisory committee of industry representatives and post-secondary faculty. During their discussions with NAF officials, the committee – comprised of 16 members representing industries from New Bedford, Providence, Boston, and other regional communities – shared how they engage with NBHS staff and students in providing curriculum

The IT Academy is part of New Bedford High School offerings of Career Vocational Technical Education programming. In addition to IT, the school offers career pathway programs in Finance, Health Sciences, Engineering, Early Childhood Education and Hospitality, as well as two Chapter 74 vocational programs in Business Technology and Radio and Television Broadcasting. For more information about Career and Technical Education at New Bedford High School, please contact Christopher Cummings, Manager of CVTE at (508) 9974511, ext. 20799.

Governor Karyn Polito and Education Secretary James Peyser visited Westfield Technical Academy to make the announcement and visit with students exploring advanced manufacturing and culinary arts programs. The high school received more than $1 million to modernize its advanced manufacturing and electrical instructional labs. The school will also launch a Career Technical Initiative program, supported by this funding. The high schools receiving grants will make strategic investments over the next two years to grow their career education programs to provide more learning opportunities for both traditional high school students and adult learners, with several schools expanding their Career Technical Initiative (CTI) programs to offer more learning opportunities in the late-afternoon and evening. Over the next 5 years, today’s grant awards will directly impact approximately 10,000 students across 38 different programs. The funding for this round of grants was included in An Act Relative to Immediate Covid-19 Recovery Needs, passed by the Legislature and signed by

the Governor, which included $100 million in state resources to provide capital improvement grants to vocational high schools and public schools operating career and technical education programs. “Since taking office, our administration has made significant investments through the Skills Capital Grant program to help more young people and adults gain the education, training and skills necessary for successful careers in rapidly growing industry sectors,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “We are proud of the impact these grants have had on both students’ educations and their futures in the Massachusetts workforce.” The Skills Capital Grant program was originally launched in 2015 with the goal of replacing outdated equipment and technology, mainly at vocational technical high schools and community colleges. Since then, the program has evolved into a crucial component of local workforce training efforts by expanding the number of young people and adults trained and experienced with the newest technologies used by local employers. The competitive grants are awarded to educational institutions that demonstrate partnerships with local businesses, as well as align curriculum and credentials with industry demand to maximize hiring opportunities in each region of the state. "High schools across the Commonwealth are valued partners in our efforts

to create opportunity and exciting career pathways for both young students and adults," said Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rosalin Acosta. "This round of Skills Capital Grants is funding a wide expansion of Career Technical Initiative programming which will help the unemployed and underemployed find meaningful work that supports themselves and their families." “Upgrading equipment and providing hands-on learning experiences ensures that our students – both young people and adults – graduate with vital skills and knowledge,” said Education Secretary James Peyser. “Through the Skills Capital Grants, thousands of young people and adults have been provided with educational opportunities to be successful in high-demand careers that are growing in the Commonwealth.” The Skills Capital Grants are awarded by Governor Baker’s Workforce Skills Cabinet, which was created in 2015 to bring together the Secretariats of Education, Labor and Workforce Development, and Housing and Economic Development to align education, economic development, and workforce policies to strategize around how to meet employers’ demand for skilled workers in every region of the Commonwealth. The following area organizations received awards in this round: •

Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School, Taunton $1,000,000 Culinary Arts: The school will use Skills Capital funds,

along with funds from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to construct a new school that will expand culinary arts instruction. The school will host a school restaurant and hospitality functions for the local community. •

Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Fall River - $2,500,000 Advanced Manufacturing and Dental Assisting: The school will renovate its Advanced Manufacturing and Dental Assisting instructional lab space, impacting 175 school students, as well as launch adult CTI training programs.
