Charting Success for SouthCoast Business

A New Year and a Renewed Commitment

While he may start counting the days, I am not. Ours is a relationship of trust, respect, friendship and complementary skills.

As the New Year begins and One SouthCoast Chamber prepares to our work to support the business community in new and exciting ways, we always pause to reflect on our core mission: To serve the business community of the South Coast through programs and activities that help businesses thrive.

In many ways, Chambers are “old school” in the sense that we believe in getting people together – live or virtually – for the betterment of businesses and the communities where we live. We live in a world where we are surrounded by tech, where we can easily reach out and tap someone on the shoulder through Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn. As wonderful as those tools are and as connected as using them makes us feel, the truth is we choose to do business most often with people we know in the real world or with people known to people we know well. As “old school” as that sounds, it remains the truth.

The New Year will bring many,

many opportunities for our members to meet and get to know each other and to participate in meaningful committee work and to build deep and lasting networks. The Chamber will remain the largest and finest connector in the region and work every day to help our members succeed in the ways they need to succeed. We have been involved in strategic planning work that will continue into 2023, the primary goals of which all center on you – our members. That commitment is our reason to exist, and anything short of that would be to do our members a disservice.

As the year begins, Rick will begin his move toward retirement by stepping back into the role of Chief Operating Officer of One SouthCoast Chamber, a move he sought that he hopes will ease the transition away from a Co-CEO model and bring the Chamber under a more traditional model with one executive. He will be working at the Chamber through December of 2023 and then begin his well-deserved retirement in 2024.

The Chamber believes in the “power of many”. We are the second largest Chamber in the Commonwealth and proudly represent and give voice to the small businesses that make up the majority of our membership. And the organization resolves that 2023 will be a year of greater influence in public policy areas that support business and to continue to enhance our many efforts aimed at improving the livability and quality of the magnificent South Coast. Whether we are working in education, arts and culture, economic development or legislative action that work is always about the needs of the business community and the ability of the business community to embrace the power of many to succeed.

One thing is certain. We cannot do it without you. Your membership and your involvement allow us to succeed in helping all businesses grow and prosper. The staff and I ask for only one resolution from you – to use us as a way to help you succeed. We are here for you and are so thankful that we can serve you.

Happy New Year!

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA; www.maritime.edu), a topranked public university with undergraduate degree programs focusing on science, engineering, technology, math, and business that blend academics and experiential learning recently held its first Introduction to Offshore Working Conditions (Offshore Experience) course for Vineyard Wind, providing 11 prospective offshore wind personnel a glimpse of what to expect when working offshore.

Vineyard Wind is currently building the nation’s first commercial scale offshore wind farm, at a site located 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.

Participants in the Academy’s recent “Offshore Experience” course were provided information on the offshore working environment, took a virtual offshore wind turbine tour, experienced simulation of an offshore wind farm in the Academy’s 360-degree full mission bridge simulator, and were educated on emergency procedures during an underway experience aboard the T/V RANGER, a coastal training vessel utilized by the Academy's Maritime Center Responsible Energy (MCRE) to support marine hydrokinetic research.

"The objective of this course was to provide the participants with a better understanding of the requirements of working offshore in an isolated environment and to help them determine if they are suited to this environment,” said course instructor Captain Michael R. Burns Jr., executive director of the Academy’s MCRE.

k students. Following the assembly, Ms. Wolkowicz returned each week to work with each pre-k classroom to speak and drum animal and instrument word pairs from the story. The children drummed the rhythms performing all stressed syllables on their lap and unstressed syllables as claps.

NBSO Premiers Music and Literacy Program with New Book

At the beginning of November, the prek students visited the Buttonwood Park Zoo and performed their original animal/instrument drum rhythms for the animals. Emily the elephant was most appreciative of their performance and wandered close to the edge of the enclosure to hear their performance.

Pulaski Pre-K teacher, Tracie Ferreira commented about the new program saying, “It was wonderful to see our preschool students collaborate with the NBSO. Terry kept our students highly engaged while learning about rhythms and syllables. I hope we are given the opportunity to invite the NBSO back to our school as it was a nice addition to traditional classroom learning.”

In October 2022, Bill Perkins concluded his time with People Incorporated, closing out a career in human services that has spanned over 40 years. Bill’s legacy will now live on at our site at Riggenbach Road, where he spent most of his career. While we are all very used to referring to this building as “Riggenbach,” we are proud that going forward it will be known as the William Perkins Center, a fitting dedication for someone who dedicated himself to so many others.

Terry Wolkowicz, Education Director for the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra initiated a new Music and Literacy program for Pre-K students at Pulaski Elementary School in New Bedford. The program explored the connections between rhythmic features of words and rhythmic sounds in music.

The program was based on the NBSO’s new children’s book entitled, “A Concert at the Zoo” written by David MacKenzie, Dave Prentiss and Terry Wolkowicz and illustrated by Olivia Coucci. Throughout the story, an animal name is linked to an instrument name that shares the same number of syllables and the same syllable stress patterns. Dr. David MacKenzie composed a piece for Cello and Narrator that incorporates elements of word stress and intonation into the musical structure allowing the musical instrument to “speak” the text. NBSO, cellist Peter Zay and Terry Wolkowicz performed the book for the Pulaski pre-

In late November, the Pulaski students and their families attended the final performance at the Pulaski school where the NBSO gifted each child the book. Inside the front cover, the NBSO has a QR code that links to the musical per formance of the story, and on the back page another QR code that leads to the NBSO website with various animal/in strument drumming and speaking prac tice videos.

The NBSO is a professional orchestra that annually presents a concert series of classical and pops music with inter nationally acclaimed guest artists, as well as an outstanding chamber music series. In 2022, the South Eastern Economic Development (SEED) Corporation made 68 small business loans totaling $17.8 million and assisted in the creation of 398 new jobs. These loans were either made in participation with the region’s financial institutions to meet a financing gap, or as direct loans to small businesses not able to obtain conventional financing.

“Without SEED’s gap loans, many small businesses would not have been able to startup, stay open, or expand and create new jobs in the region," explained Sue Murray, SEED's Executive Director. SEED approved and closed 19 Small Business Administration (SBA) 504 loans totaling $14 million to enable small businesses to purchase or improve their own building or acquire heavy machinery and equipment. SEED made an additional 49 small business loans totaling $3.8 million under the SBA micro loan and small loan program. These loans ranged from $10,000 to $280,000.

In 2022, SEED was awarded a $3.75 million EDA grant under the American Rescue Plan Act

(ARPA) to establish a new revolving loan fund to assist the region in rebounding from the devasting effects of the pandemic. These funds will enable SEED to continue making small loans up to $350,000 . This affordable source of capital will be instrumental in new business startups and assisting small business owners who may be ready to expand but lack access to affordable capital.

In addition to our ARPA award, SEED was awarded our second grant from Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation (MGCC) in the amount of $450,000 for lending and administrative costs. Total funding from MGCC totals $1.59 million to support the Massachusetts small business economy. Also in 2022, the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation awarded SEED an additional grant of $175,000 for total funding of $1.3 million for lending to small business in the Rhode Island small business community. SEED was also fortunate to receive a renewal of a $20,000 operating grant from Santander Bank.

SBA 504 loans up to $5.5 mil-

lion are made in participation with financial institutions, and provide an attractive option for small businesses undertaking real estate projects, or financing heavy machinery and equipment. The down payment is generally as low as 10 percent for the total project, and the interest rate is below market and fixed for 20 or 25 years for SEED’s portion of the financing (up to 40%). A participating financial institution provides the remining 50 percent of the financing under this program.

According to Murray, SEED’s small loans assist small businesses that are unable to qualify for conventional financing alone due to tight cash flow, insufficient collateral, start-up nature of the business, or lower personal credit scores, but are viable community businesses which create jobs and are important to the region’s economy. SEED’s flexible loans have terms up to 10 years, repayment schedules up to 20 years (for real estate projects), fixed interest rates from 5 - 6%, and can be used for most any business purpose. These loans are often made in participation with a financial institution to fill a financing gap.

This past year, SEED held or participated in a total of 84 entrepreneurial workshops, financing panels, and small business trainings attended by 1,667 prospective entrepreneurs and provided business technical assistance to another 959 individu-

als for a total of 2,626 people assisted. SEED’s workshops were sponsored by the following: BankNewport, Bluestone Bank, Mechanics Cooperative Bank, Dedham Institution for Savings, Santander Bank, North Easton Savings Bank, Eastern Bank, Merrimack Valley Credit Union, and Webster Bank.

SEED worked closely with the SBA, SBA resources partners including the Small Business Development Center, SCORE, Center for Woman and Enterprise, Veterans Business Outreach Center, as well as the local chambers of commerce, and various community organizations to present the workshops.

SEED also joined 64 additional panels and workshops to present our information and other financial related topics.

SEED is a non-profit corporation established in 1982 to assist small businesses in the region. In 40 years, SEED has made 2,4002 loans totaling $436 million, and assisting in the creation of 14,300 new jobs. Our lending has also leveraged an additional $878 million dollars of private investment in the region!

For a loan application and more information about SEED's loan programs, please call 508-8221020 or visit SEED at www. seedcorp.com.

BayCoast Mortgage Company, LLC Announces Purchase of Martha’s Vineyard Mortgage Company, LLC

BayCoast Mortgage Company, LLC, (BayCoastMortgage.com), a wholly owned subsidiary of BayCoast Bank, is proud to announce an exciting expansion of service in Dukes County, Massachusetts, with the purchase of Martha’s Vineyard Mortgage Company, LLC.

With this recent purchase, Martha’s Vineyard Mortgage will retain its name and become a division of BayCoast Mortgage Company, which has a strong history of providing exceptional financial solutions and service to its customers. That same tradition will now extend to new customers on Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket Island and Cape Cod.

Tammy King, Vice President, Senior Loan Officer with BayCoast Mortgage and resident of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, will manage the Martha’s Vineyard Mortgage office, which is also located in Vineyard Haven at 107 Beach Road. She will be joined by her assistant, Shelly A. Mayhew, who also resides on the Vineyard in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

“We are thrilled to welcome Martha’s Vineyard Mortgage Company to the BayCoast Mortgage family,” said Daniel J. Briand, President and CEO of BayCoast Mortgage Company. “With previous experience serving Cape Cod and the Islands, Tammy and Shelly can

offer a unique perspective and expertise to our Dukes County customers and their specific mortgage needs, whether it be for new construction, a primary residence or vacation home. Our Martha’s Vineyard team looks forward to building trusted relationships as they assist clients on their personal journeys to homeownership.”

King joined the BayCoast Mortgage team in August of 2022, bringing 20 years of experience as a residential mortgage lender. She was named a Top Individual Lender in Dukes County from 2016-2021 by Banker & Tradesman. King has extensive experience with all types of loans, including construction

loans and enjoys helping firsttime homebuyers with their financing.

Mayhew joined BayCoast Mortgage in October, 2022 and has more than 23 years of community banking experience on Martha’s Vineyard. For more than two decades, Martha’s Vineyard Mortgage has specialized in purchases and refinances, offering competitive rates and personalized service. “BayCoast Mortgage would like to sincerely thank previous owners Polly K. Bassett and Carol Borselle for more than 20 years of dedicated service to the community,” said Briand.
