Smiles Abound at Spring Fling First things first: did you go to Spring Fling? If not, I feel a sense of sadness for you, because our CESLians had so much fun last Friday.

Many decided to buy wristbands or tickets and ride the rides, while several others were happy with watching their friends get sick riding.

With only one extremely sick carnival-goer (Logan) and just one phone destroyed on a ride (Ahmad Hasan), Spring Fling was a CESLcertified hit. Check out more pictures from the evening on page 2.

Dama Tournament Moves into Third Week One half of the championship match has been set, as Ahmad Hasan defeated Hamad Alenezi in the semifinal match on Tuesday after dispatching a very worthy opponent in Khaled Naser. Add in the skilled play of Amer Alumtairi and Thunyan Alhassan, as well as a handful of players looking for an upset, and we have a very exciting backside of the bracket, as winners will move on and losers will go home sad.

The tournament is slowly moving toward completion, but alas, we will now head into our 3rd week of play. Communication issues and absent players have contributed to the slow progression of matches and lead to the following announcement about remaining games:

Second round “loser’s bracket” games must be played by the end of the day on Tuesday or absent players will forfeit their match.

No Exceptions.

If a player from those matches is present at 3:00pm and their opponent does not arrive by 3:10pm, the person who is present will move on. Their opponents (Nasser Alruwaished, Omar Alzafiri, Khaled Alenezi and Amer Almutairi) must also be present Tuesday after class to play the winners. Questions? Ask Logan in the SLC.

Grand Canyon Trip

Witness wildlife and breathtaking views on our hike into the canyon. Watch the sunrise over the canyon on our sunrise hike. Your fee includes transportation, park entrance fee, and two nights double occupancy in the Red Feather Lodge near the Canyon Rim. Meals are extra.

Pima County Fair

Admission: $9

Thu. 4/19-Sun. 4/29, Gates: M-F 1pm, Sat.-Sun 10am One of Southern Arizona’s most anticipated events of the year, the Pima County Fair has a lot to offer, including a carnival separated into two sections (one for kids and an “extreme” section), 4H/FFA Livestock shows and viewings, tons of food options, and a nightly concert. FunPasses for rides are available for $35. This Thursday (4/19) is Pepsi Wristband Day: If you bring an unopened 20oz bottle of Pepsi, you get $5 off of wristbands. To the right is a list of highlighted performers, including Ludacris this Thursday! All concerts, with the exception of Fri. 4/20, are included with the price of admission to the fair.

Student Spotlight!

CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions.

Name: Abdul Rahman Turay Home country: Sierra Leone

Level: 7A Interviewed by: Haibo Sun

Hello Abdul Rahman, could you tell us about yourself?

Hi, I am from Sierra Leone in West Africa. I am a geologist, and I am studying at CESL as a prerequisite for graduate school.

How many languages can you speak? Three languages—Krio (a common language in Sierra Leone similar to English), Limba (also specific to West African countries of Sierra Leone and Guinea) and English.

What is your secret talent that no one knows about?

Farming: Animal and crop cultivation. I am planning on studying hydrology in graduate school.

What is your dream job and life goal? I hope to help provide water and sanitation facilities for deprived communities. My dream job is working as a Minister of Water Resources in Sierra Leone or for the United Nations Emergency Agency.

What is your ideal way of spending your weekend? I like to spend my weekends hiking, swimming and reading.

Do you like traveling? Yes, I love to see different cultures. I would like to see some of the historic sites and wonders around the world.

CESL student worker Susanne sat down with a CESL student to ask her some questions.

Name: Lisa Bernd Level: 7 Home Country: Germany Interviewed by: Susanne Borchaloui Major of Interest: Pediatric Nursing Hello, Lisa. How are you? I am good, thank you.

Wonderful! So, why do you want to study English? Because I think it is the most important language in the world, and it will give me more opportunities.

Very cool. Is this your first time in the United States? Are you happy with your experience here? Yes. Yes, it is very nice here. I have met friends in my classes from different countries like Japan and Taiwan.

Great! Have you traveled to any other places other than the US? Yes, I have been to Italy, Switzerland, and Holland.

Which has been your favorite place to visit? The US because the people are friendly, I like the weather (most of the time), and I like the big streets here because I enjoy driving.

Nice, what are some other things you like to do here outside of CESL? I like to go out to eat at either the Student Union or restaurants outside of campus with my friend from Japan. I like to go out and eat sushi, Panda Express, and everything! Haha!
