Grand Canyon

Unforgettable Trip to the Grand Canyon Last weekend, CESL took a trip to the Grand Canyon and made lasting memories. Though they had to contend with unexpected temperature spikes in the middle of their hike (100 degrees!), our resilient students made it in and out of the Canyon intact. Three adventurous students (and Glen) ventured farther to dip their toes in the Colorado River. Our next Grand Canyon Trip will be in the fall— don’t miss it! Check out more pictures on pages 2-3.

Student Spotlight!

CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions.

Name: Mojtaba Alasafwani Hometown: Dammam, Saudi Arabia

Level: 2 Interviewed by: Hady Mambo

Hello, Mojtaba. How are you? I noticed you had to look at your CESL ID card for the correct spelling of your name when I asked for it. Is there a special reason for that? I am good, Hady. As funny as it may sound, I never wrote my name in English before coming here. I had to look it up on my CESL ID because it was translated from Arabic to English.

Have you ever visited any other English-speaking countries besides the US? Yes I have been to England in the United Kingdom. I lived there for two months and while I was there I only used ‘Moji,’ which is my nickname, because everyone thought saying Mojtaba was too hard to say.

What are some of the differences that you have noticed between here and England? There was a large Arabic population in the college in England. There was some diversity, but from what I saw the majority of its international students were Arabic speakers.

Here at the UofA there is greater diversity in numbers and countries when it comes to international students. I chose to come here because I wanted a place where it wouldn’t be so easy for me to speak my native language.

What do you like the most besides being in class? I like all of the activities; they’re very fun and a good way to de-stress. I like the CESL community in general because the teachers and everyone here are very polite and professional.

How different is studying in your country compared to here? The main difference is in rules and principles in the school system in general. I was not used to the tardies/absences policies here because in my country they do not apply. It was hard to get used to, but now I understand that I have to follow all the rules in order to succeed.

CESL student worker Javeria sat down with a CESL student to ask her some questions.

Name: Ghayda Alhabib Home Country: Saudi Arabia

Level: 4 Interviewed by: Javeria Ahmad

Hello, Ghayda. Could you tell us about yourself? Hi, I am from Riyadh, I finished my BA in Interior Design and came here to study English to go into the Master’s program at the U of A through UTrack. I want to study architecture and become an interior designer. I have loved interior designing ever since I was in high school and have been working hard to keep my grades up and learn English.

That is great to hear! How has CESL helped you so far? My English has improved very quickly. The first time I came here, I was talking to the people at the front desk and it was very hard to understand them. I had to ask to repeat the questions multiple times. Now, when I go to the office, I can understand everything they are saying and I noticed that I improved a lot within 2 months.

Besides school, what do you like to do in your free time? Sometimes I draw, I like to do perspective sketches for architecture. They are really fun and easy because you mostly draw straight lines from one point to make buildings.

What is your favorite place in Tucson? My favorite place is Mount Lemmon. I love the snow in the winter and enjoy drinking coffee in the cold, since we don’t have snow in our country.

Have you traveled anywhere else other than Tucson? When I came to Tucson, my husband and I went to Los Angeles and Santa Monica in California. Then we went to Las Vegas. My family and I traveled to places near Saudi Arabia, so I have also been to UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Syria before the war, and Turkey.

My favorites were Turkey and Los Angeles.
