Disruptive Paintball Sat. 4/7

Still spots left for this awesome activity! p. 3

WE WANNA GO FAST! We sent fourteen speed aficionados to see just how fast the race cars were at Tucson Speedway last weekend. After gathering responses from attendees, the following were the most popular answers: “super cool/fast,” “faster than I imagined,” and “I wish I had ear plugs.” Students definitely got their money’s worth as they were able to experience a true American pastime in witnessing professional auto racing. Thanks for attending, guys and gals!

SPRING 2, 2018 - WEEK 3

CESL Dama Tournament Monday, April 9th-Friday, April 13th 11:30am-12:20pm (and after class if needed) Do you have what it takes to be the first ever CESL Dama Champion? Prove it next week as we play the CESL DoubleElimination Dama Tournament. Games will take place during class break and after class and will be limited to 15 minutes/game. Sign-ups are on the blue bulletin board across from Jay’s office. Sign up by Monday morning for your chance at glory! If you have questions, ask Logan on Monday. Trophies for top spots!

How Do You Play Dama? On an 8x8 board, 16 pieces are lined up on each side in two rows with the back rows empty. The pieces move forward or to the side by one square, capturing by means of a jump over the opponent’s pieces. Normal pieces cannot move/jump backwards. If your piece reaches the opponent’s back row, it becomes a sheikh. Sheikhs can move backwards and can move any number of empty squares forwards, backwards, or sideways. If a jump is available, it must be taken. If there is more than one way to jump, the one with the most pieces captured must be taken. A player wins when their opponent either has no pieces left or is cannot move. 5

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Jingzhong Fei Hometown: Hangzhou, China

Level: 5 Interviewed by: Haibo Sun

Hello Jingzhong, how are you? Could you tell us something about yourself? Hi, my favorite hobby is taking pictures and recording everything with aerial devices like drones. When did you start to play with drones? I started using them about 2 years ago. I went on a road trip with my friends and they used it to record the natural landscape. Is there a specific brand of drone that you like to use or own? My favorite brand is DJI. I have two of them; one of them is a mini portable version that allows me to take it with me on trips easily, and the other one is a really big drone with a camera with a higher resolution. I like both of them, because you need to use different devices to satisfy different needs. What do you do besides flying the drones? I like to record beautiful spots, edit the footage and share it with people who want to go there in the future as a travel Haibo & Jingzhong blog. What motivates you to do the travel blogs? I feel accomplished when I can help people have a better view of a place they have never been. What major are you studying? I study computer science in China. I am just studying at CESL for two sessions to improve my English before returning. Do you have any plans after graduating? I don’t have a specific dream job yet, but I do want to work in a mobile software company such as WeChat. Thank you, Jingzhong! 6

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Mohamad Othman Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait Major: Electrical Engineering

Level: 3 Interviewed by: Hady Mambo

Hello, Mohamad. How are you? I know that in your culture people can have more than 4 or 5 names. How many names do you have and is there a special reason for it? I am very fine, thanks. I have 7 names. The reason is that we are very proud of our culture and we honor our ancestors by carrying on their names for many generations. The rule is: your name, your father’s name, grandfather’s name, greatgrandfather’s name, and lastly, your family name. That’s the main structure, but many people decide to go back even further than greatgrandfathers. So when you present yourself in a formal way, how do you say it? It depends. Here in America, we say our first and last name, since that’s the rule here. But in Kuwait we usually say our first and second name, which are the names of myself and my father.

Hady & Mohamad

How would you rate your English level from 1-10 since you started studying? I would say I am an 8. I have improved a lot since I started. When I first came I would not be able to have this interview without anyone translating for me. It is not perfect yet and I know I have a long way to go, but I am more confident and very proud of myself. Do you have a “secret” gift that you are very passionate about? Yes I do have and after telling you it will not be a secret anymore. I like music and I play a little bit of piano. I also like to play soccer and video games. Thanks for your time, Mohamad, and we wish you good luck in your studies! 7
