Are We Human, or Are We Dancer?

If you caught the Killers reference in the title, good for you.

Though some might see it as a chance to be silly, the title reflects the experience of the small group of CESL students that attended the UofA School of Dance performance: At the Edge. The show was diverse in dance style, music, size and energy and had observers experience a wide variety of emotions and thoughts. It was a very enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon with great company.

Dama Tournament: When Will It End?!

Mercifully, the 1st ever CESL Dama Tournament will conclude this week. We are just a few short matches away from finding out who will join Ahmad Hasan in the Championship Round. With that in mind, here is how the Championship will be played out.

The Championship Match will be played on Wednesday at 3:00pm. All previous matches will be completed by Tuesday afternoon.

No Exceptions.

This is a double-elimination (2 losses) tournament. Ahmad is the only player without a loss. As such, if anyone beats him in the Championship Match, they must play a second match to decide the champion. The winner of the championship will receive a trophy engraved with their name on it during the Closing Ceremony.

Student Spotlight!

CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions.

Hello, Talal. How did you learn about CESL and why did you decide to join us to learn English? I was looking for the best universities that offer my major of study, and I found out about UofA. Since I needed to have English proficiency in order to study at the UofA, I was informed that CESL offers great ESL classes that could help me get the proficiency needed. In addition to that, I also learned that CESL has the endorsement program that can help students get admitted to the university even without a TOEFL or IELTS score.

Have you applied to the UofA already? Yes, and I have conditional admission to start my studies this upcoming Fall.

That’s great news! Congratulations! Did you know any English before coming? Yes, I did know how to speak before. I studied back home, but I was not proficient enough to go straight to the university.

That is why I came to CESL.

What are your strategies to learn English and what advice would you give others so they improve too? I have found that having friends who only speak English and another language that is not yours is very important to improve. You force yourself to speak only English and by doing that you are practicing. In addition to that, paying attention in class and asking as many questions as you can has also been a very effective strategy of mine.

*Interview continued from previous page: Have the US and CESL met your expectations so far? Well, as many of the international students I have talked to have said, we all had a different image about the US than the one we found in the first place. For me, personally, I used to watch movies, read magazines and see the America Hollywood portrayed thru their lenses. However, I came to realize that while the Hollywood image of the US does indeed exist; that is not the most accurate representation of the country. For instance, I had to come to Tucson to realize that there is also a place in America that has similar weather to my country and also has many very beautiful mountains.

How different is your culture from the one you encountered here? My culture is a more conservative and religious one and from what I have seen here, it is different in many aspects. Nevertheless, we have many similarities in regard to some values such as morals.

What are your favorite hobbies? I love to swim. I started swimming 5 years ago. I swim for relaxation and also when I have free time. Back home I would go swimming every week.

Have you found anywhere to swim here in Tucson already? Yes I have. I go to the UA Campus Rec Center. They have a big pool there and because they have discounted rates for CESL students, that is the ideal place for me.
