AT HOME WITH

Born into a creative and entrepreneurial family, Ashley Stark found her love of design at an early age. Stark witnessed her grandparents’ carpet and textile business, STARK, grow from a small company with grand ambition into a great success—in the 1960s, STARK provided carpet for the White House, among other impressive achievements.

Ashley Stark is now Creative Director of STARK, as well as the driving force behind her namesake brand, Ashley Stark Home. Beginning with her own line of rugs, Stark has expanded into design collaborations, including a collection of faux florals with Diane James.

Here, Stark shares with us the room in her home where all the living happens, and tells us what she believes turns a house into a home.

In your house, which is your favorite room?

My favorite room has to be the living room. It’s where everything comes together—the textures, the layers, the soft, inviting tones. I love creating a space that feels both curated and cozy, where you can just sink into the furniture but still admire all the details. There’s always a touch of drama, too, whether it’s from a statement piece or a bold textile. It’s the heart of the home, and for me, it’s where the design really comes alive.

What makes this particular room special to you?

The living room is where life truly happens. It’s the place where my family gathers, where memories are made, and where guests naturally gravitate. I love that it’s a space that balances function and beauty— every piece is thoughtfully chosen, not just for how it looks but also for how it feels. The textures, the layering, the lighting—it’s all designed to evoke a sense of comfort and warmth. There’s something magical about creating a room that feels both personal and timeless, a space that tells a story while inviting everyone to relax and connect.

What are some things that you personally feel make your house a home?

For me, a house becomes a home through the layers of personal touches and intentionality in every detail. It’s the soft, lived-in textures—like a beautiful cashmere throw draped over the sofa or a perfectly worn vintage rug. Family photos in gorgeous frames, a curated mix of books that inspire me, and meaningful art pieces all add personality and heart.

Scent is another big one for me; a house isn’t complete without the warmth of candles or the fresh aroma of flowers. And, of course, it’s the people—the laughter, the shared meals, and the little moments that bring everything to life. A home should feel like a sanctuary, but also somewhere full of soul and energy. It’s those elements together that make it truly special. 

ART IN FORM

THE POWER OF SCULPTURE IN PERSONALIZED LUXURY SPACES

Make your home a true reflection of your identity with custom sculpture that blends beauty, story, and soul.

Sculpture brings character, emotion, and legacy to high-end homes— whether integrated into architecture or standing alone as a bold statement of personal style.

When it comes to luxury home design, every detail matters. From architecture to interior styling, today’s high-end homeowners are looking for ways to create spaces that feel uniquely their own. And, increasingly, sculpture is becoming the centerpiece of that transformation.

Much like a mural or a curated art wall, sculpture adds dimension, depth, and a sense of soul to a space. Whether dramatic or discreet, indoor or outdoor, abstract or classically

inspired, sculpture offers more than visual appeal—it sparks conversation, evokes emotion, and creates a connection between space and self.

Recent studies have shown that integrating art into home environments can positively impact well-being. According to the American Art Therapy Association, exposure to visual art in personal spaces contributes to stress reduction and improved emotional states. A 2021 study published in Frontiers in Psychology further found that viewing art in one’s home can enhance feelings of happiness and cognitive stimulation, offering not just aesthetic appeal but also a tangible wellness benefit (Chatterjee & Vartanian, 2021).

A separate survey conducted by the Home Trends & Buyer Preferences Report (NAHB, 2021) found that nearly fifty-

eight percent of homeowners in the luxury market consider custom or artistic design features—such as sculptural pieces—to be “essential” or “very desirable,” reinforcing the growing demand for personalized art at home.

“Art should evoke emotion, whether it’s joy, curiosity, or a sense of wonder,” say Australian artists Gillie and Marc, whose works appear in homes and cities around the world. Known for their whimsical and deeply personal creations, the duo believes that sculpture is not just a decorative element, but a storyteller. “Start with what speaks to you,” they advise new collectors. “Even a small piece can redefine a room when thoughtfully placed.”

Sculpture comes in a variety of styles that complement different home aesthetics. Classical pieces lend a sense of timelessness and tradition, especially in formal spaces or neoclassical homes. Contemporary or abstract works, by contrast, often take on bold, conceptual forms, making them ideal for modern or transitional interiors.

Materials play an equally important role. Bronze, marble, stainless steel, stone, and glass are some of the most soughtafter mediums for luxury installations. “There’s a beautiful

mix of bold contemporary forms and timeless finishes right now,” say Gillie and Marc. “Indoors, high-polish bronze or patinaed finishes add sophistication. Outdoors, stainless steel and bronze offer durability with visual impact.”

At David Harber Studio, known for its sculptural installations in both private gardens and estates, Design Director Lior Kristal highlights the use of “natural materials like bronze, brass, and stone” for their longevity and emotional resonance. “These materials evoke tradition and artistry refined over centuries,” he explains. “They help forge meaningful emotional connections.”

While art for art’s sake remains timeless, today’s homeowners are also exploring sculpture that serves a purpose. Water features, lighting installations, or sculptural furniture bring utility to beauty.

“We’ve created interactive pieces that double as seating, fountains, or even side tables,” say Gillie and Marc. “The key is making sure the piece enhances the space, not just decorates it.”

Lior Kristal adds that placement plays a powerful role in how sculpture is experienced. “A sculpture can be a focal point

like these pieces by Gillie and Marc.

Below: Mix sculpture with painting and other objects to create a sense of personality within your space.

Opposite: The materials used in outdoor sculpture should be durable, with visual impact.

“A SCULPTURE SHOULD REFLECT YOUR LIFESTYLE, VALUES, AND THE SOUL OF THE HOME. IT’S NOT JUST AN OBJECT—IT’S A LEGACY.”

or a quiet surprise—something you discover as you move through a garden or interior,” he says. “Lighting is essential. It should reveal nuances in the form and materials without overpowering them.”

Whether nestled into a curated shelf, anchoring a dramatic entryway, or standing as a sentinel in a landscaped courtyard, sculpture must be placed thoughtfully. Scale, lighting, and flow are essential considerations.

“Scale is everything,” note Gillie and Marc. “Too small, and it gets lost; too big, and it can overwhelm.” A good rule of thumb: sculpture should occupy about one-third the height of a room to feel balanced.

David Harber Studio often collaborates with interior designers and landscape architects to ensure that the work harmonizes with its surroundings. “Even at the final stages of a project, we revisit the original vision behind the design,” says Kristal. “Our goal is to create something distinctive and integrated.”

For those who want something truly unique, commissioning a custom sculpture can be an extraordinary experience. Start by reviewing the artist’s portfolio and discussing concepts or themes that matter to you. High-end artists will often provide sketches or maquettes before fabrication.

“We explore the client’s personal story—what moves them, what values they want to express,” say Gillie and Marc. “From there, we create something deeply personal.”

Kristal agrees: “A sculpture should reflect your lifestyle, values, and the soul of the home. It’s not just an object—it’s a legacy.”

From intimate entryways to sweeping garden vistas, sculpture has the power to ground a space, tell a story, and express identity with grace. For luxury homeowners seeking more than aesthetics, it offers an enduring legacy—one that lives and evolves within the rhythm of the home itself. 

ACHIEVING PEACE OF MIND

SAFEGUARDING YOUR HOME

AGAINST NATURAL DISASTERS

Curved external surfaces better withstand strong winds than hard edges do.

In light of recent years’ fire events and ever more extreme weather pummeling every corner of the world, we’d venture that the ultimate home luxury today is disaster-proof design.

If there are lessons to be learned from the Palisades fire, in particular, certain design features, materials, and mitigation strategies may leave some homes standing while their neighbors are reduced to rubble and ash.

While you may be unable to avoid every possible disaster, you can shore up your home’s defenses to protect your investment.

Given today’s high home prices, we’d be forgiven for thinking that our houses should last forever. Unfortunately, you can’t anticipate every possible scenario. Retrofitting your home to protect it from disasters is a worthwhile investment, as is getting proactive about prevention.

In luxury home builds, the stakes are raised. Property values are sky-high, and the homes themselves are often unique, requiring intentional mitigations that seamlessly blend with the home’s design, and flow with its landscape.

Though you may not have the advantage of informing a home’s build, there are still things you can do to improve disaster safety.

We’ve put together some tips and strategies to help you safeguard your home from fire, water, wind, and other disasters, and we’ll also suggest a few advanced safety features for an added layer of disaster preparedness.

FIREPROOFING YOUR HOME

Using fire-resistant building materials is the first defense against fire, especially in high-risk areas. Roofs, windows, and the walls themselves may quickly escalate a fire if they’re made from or framed with flammable materials.

Fire-resistant building features may include:

ƒ fire-resistant cladding, decking, and fencing to minimize ignition risks

ƒ thermally insulated windows, steel or aluminum frames, and steel doors and frames, which can prevent fire from penetrating the home and may extinguish the blaze before it escalates

ƒ clay tiles, concrete, or metal roofing, which mitigates ignition risk.

Here are a few other things you can do:

ƒ Create a defensible space around your home by clearing dry brush. Concrete tiles, pavers, or natural stone create a fire break. Maintaining a substantial buffer zone of at least thirty feet prevents fire from spreading.

ƒ Plant fire-resistant landscaping like agave, lavender, yucca, sedum, or ice plants, as they have high moisture content and do not accumulate dry leaves. Succulents are ideal, especially as ground cover.

ƒ Avoid ornamental grasses , as they tend to dry out. Evergreens have high oil and resin content, so they should also be kept off the landscaping list.

ƒ Install an irrigation system , as it helps to keep vegetation well-watered, reducing the fire hazard from dry brush. Consider installing sprinkler systems along rooftops and walls to create a protective water barrier. Creating a moisture barrier around the home may prevent flames from advancing. Many systems can be configured to trigger automatically when wildfires are detected nearby, and some support environmentally friendly fire-retardant foams to coat surfaces for additional protection.

ƒ Install autonomous water tanks. One of the biggest challenges for firefighters when trying to save a home is the lack of water supply. Autonomous water storage tanks are a viable solution, providing options that are independent of municipal sources. Underground tanks, rainwater collection systems, or private hydrants are highly recommended. Consider installing a link to the local water supply to keep tanks topped up.

WATERPROOFING AND STORM PROTECTION

Water and extreme weather can be just as damaging as fire.

When weatherproofing an existing home, look for vulnerabilities, foundation cracks, signs of wear, gaps around windows and doors, and broken or damaged roof tiles.

Many of the same types of building materials and strategies outlined in the fire prevention section stand true for the prevention of water infiltration and damage, too, such as metal, clay tiles, concrete roofs and water - resistant cladding.

Sealing and caulking to close gaps around windows and doors will protect you from minor flooding and may buy you some time in an emergency. In extreme weather, windows, doors, and garage doors tend to be the most vulnerable, so focus on these features first.

Installing storm shutters and reinforced glass provides impact resistance and will keep windows intact during hurricanes and severe storms. Motorized hurricane screens provide state-of-the-art protection, allowing you to deploy through a smartphone app, which is ideal for maintaining storm safety even when you’re away.

Roof straps and hurricane clips can secure the roof to the foundation, protecting the home’s structural integrity and preventing the roof from lifting off in hurricane-force winds.

HOME DESIGN FOR WIND RESISTANCE

Homes can be architecturally designed to provide natural resilience against high winds.

For example, some coastal builders have begun to prioritize circular home design to withstand hurricane-force winds and seismic events. According to the engineers at Deltec Homes, their panoramic homes “have less pressure on them because of their shape, with circular designs providing superior aerodynamics that allow wind to flow around the home rather than build up pressure on any one side.”

Fortunately, homes don’t necessarily have to be circular to reap similar benefits; rounded corners and sloped roofs provide necessary aerodynamics while still maintaining a more traditional house shape. Sharp angles and flat roofs, on the other hand, are more susceptible to damage.

BACKUP POWER SOLUTIONS

Whole-house generators help you keep heating, airflow systems, and appliances running during prolonged outages, and may reduce property damage by keeping various systems online.

ADVANCED SAFETY MEASURES FOR LUXURY HOMES

Resilient design is an architectural movement informed by the frequency and impact of natural disasters in recent years.

The United Nations issued a report in 2020 that tallied the global cost of natural disasters at $2.97 trillion—more than twice what had been recorded in the previous two decades.

As a result, builders and developers focus strongly on risk management through design and have largely proven that luxury and disaster safety can coexist.

While not every home can be wholly retrofitted to withstand external threats, homeowners are increasingly choosing features designed to provide safe refuge during emergencies.

Safe rooms have grown in popularity, as evidenced by a projected increase in market size from $645 million in 2023 to more than $1 billion by 2030. While safe rooms can provide psychological safety, they can also be built with bulletproof elements and stocked with emergency supplies to hunker down in case of civil unrest or threat of attack.

Home security systems have also advanced significantly to meet the needs of elite residences. State-of-the-art systems are anything but ordinary, often including features like safe rooms, vaults, bulletproof doors, biometric access control, laser curtains around the property’s perimeter, and advanced camera systems with night vision,

In storm-prone areas, hurricane shutters and reinforced glass are vital.

facial recognition, and AI-powered ability to detect and discern suspicious activity on or around the property.

In addition to the personal safety features described here, many security systems can connect to smart systems throughout the home to detect water leaks, fires, or injuries from falls.

Secure storage solutions, like vaults and treasure rooms, are a supersized version of a safe, suitable for protecting rare wine collections, heirlooms, priceless artwork, and jewels in a secure, bespoke space within the home. Some of the most striking examples include built-in custom storage units equipped with safes and secret compartments for additional peace of mind.

THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN HOME SAFETY

Connected security and disaster prevention systems are ideal as they enable remote operation and monitoring.

Smart sensors powered by AI can detect events like fires, floods, or breaches, and they can be configured to enact responses without human input. Homeowners or security personnel are notified automatically so they can liaise with the homeowner or emergency services as appropriate.

PEACE OF MIND IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY

Disasters don’t often send a warning notice. And while high-end homes are built with quality in mind, they may lack the features needed to withstand today’s perils.

When building a new home, work with your builder to infuse the design with disaster resilience. Retrofit existing homes with features that matter most to you, informed by regional disaster trends and weather patterns, and apply some of the tips we’ve shared to help you reduce the risk to your home and property, and to gain peace of mind for you and your loved ones. 

THE ART OF LUXURY

HIGH-END FINISHES THAT ELEVATE YOUR HOME

Finishes help to create a home that is elegant, distinctive, and the ultimate in luxury.

In the lofty world of luxury home design, every detail matters. Thoughtfully curated high-end furniture and accessories paired with exquisite craftsmanship are elements that you can rely on to create a home that exudes opulence. But it is the finishes you choose that play a crucial role in defining your space’s overall aesthetic and quality. From parquetry flooring to hand-carved mantels, these features are the finishing touch—the icing on the cake—that can take your house to the next level by showcasing quality, aesthetics, and good taste.

EXQUISITE WALL FINISHES:

ENHANCING THE CANVAS OF YOUR HOME

Your walls represent a blank canvas, beckoning you to add a bespoke finish—whether it’s wallpaper, paint or an innovative material—to make them come alive and exude elegance.

Specialty Paints and Finishes

The finish on your paint is as important as the color itself to create a particular look. You can choose eggshell, flat, semi-gloss, satin or high gloss, depending on your preferences and decor, to add a luxurious layer to your design. But you don’t have to limit yourself to just paint! Consider venetian plaster, limewash, metallic, and high-gloss lacquer for an exceptionally elegant touch.

Parquetry flooring and statement windows can elevate your home to a new level of luxury.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper gives you a great opportunity to add a touch of luxury to your space. Avoid vinyl in favor of 100 percent paper or other natural materials, such as silk, and stick with a matte finish for a sophisticated look. Check out damask, intricate floral designs or geometric patterns, as well as wallpapers textured with an embossed or flocked finish. You can take it a step further with grasscloth to provide texture, or even hand-painted wallpaper and murals to make a statement.

Innovative Glass Features

Your imagination is the limit when it comes to decorative glass, with its stylish and lavish options—from sliding glass walls and frosted glass partitions to stained glass accent walls and translucent glass blocks. Some of the most sophisticated homeowners embrace smart glass technology, which can turn from opaque to transparent and back again with the flick of a switch.

FLOORING THAT DEFINES ELEGANCE

FOR A BESPOKE, UNIQUE LOOK THAT IS PRIZED BY HIGHEND HOMEOWNERS, CHOOSE CUSTOM CRAFTSMANSHIP.

natural stone never disappoints with its ability to add beauty as well as high performance.

Marble is the quintessential material for creating understated elegance. While it is most often used on backsplashes in kitchens, as well as floors and walls in bathrooms, it takes any room in your home to the next level. And you don’t have to stop there—you can choose a marble with a special finish for an even more unique look, including tumbled and brushed, both of which add a layer of texture.

Virtually all types of stones that help create a luxurious atmosphere in your home are also available with a surprising number of options for bespoke finishes:

ƒ Sandblasted: Small craters highlight the color of the stone.

ƒ Leathered: The stone is textured to appear less glossy.

ƒ Honed: Smooth texture.

ƒ Flamed: Rough and textured.

ƒ Polished: An elegant, semi-gloss look.

Any of these will contribute another level of distinctiveness and customization.

Using an elegant finish on your floors is yet another way to inject a chic, luxurious feel into a room. From hardwood, marble and decorative stone, to bespoke mosaic tiles, the choices are practically infinite.

Parquetry Flooring

Parquetry flooring offers a luxuriant finish in rich wood tones that makes it a standout feature in high-end interiors. Whether in classic herringbone, chevron or intricate bespoke patterns, its pleasing wood textures and precision craftsmanship add elegance to any space, from entryways to living rooms.

Exotic Hardwoods

Mahogany, walnut, and oak floors, with their saturated colors and unique graining, are excellent choices if you’re opting for a traditional opulent look. For a home that’s sleek and modern, consider tigerwood or maple instead. You can also elevate a rustic, homey look with hickory or cherry wood flooring.

DECORATIVE STONE FINISHES

Natural stone can be relied on to lend a posh and upscale look to your home. Popular stones include marble, granite, travertine, slate, limestone, quartzite, onyx, and sandstone. With a great range of colors, styles and sizes to choose from,

CUSTOM CABINETRY AND MILLWORK: THE HALLMARKS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

Cabinetry or millwork that is mass-produced tends to diminish the look and feel of luxury. For a bespoke, unique look that is prized by high-end homeowners, choose custom craftsmanship instead for cabinetry, molding, trim, or shelving, and millwork. Using top-quality materials and old-world techniques will introduce a hint of exclusive luxury throughout a home.

Hand-Carved Mantels and Wood Paneling: Traditional craftsmanship blended with contemporary elegance can add depth, warmth, and bespoke character to both classic and modern interiors.

Built-in Custom Cabinetry: Sleek, high-gloss finishes, leather-wrapped panels, and cleverly concealed storage solutions blend luxury with seamless functionality.

Metal Inlays and Unique Hardware: Intricate bronze, brass, and gold detailing introduce a touch of opulence, transforming everyday elements into statement features.

LIGHTING: SETTING THE MOOD FOR LUXURY

Below:

In luxury interiors, lighting does far more than simply illuminate—it sets the tone and highlights architectural features, enhancing just about any space. The choice of first-rate lighting design is essential for creating a sense of discreet luxury, especially in high-end homes where every detail contributes to a refined aesthetic.

Statement Chandeliers and Pendants: Murano glass, crystal, and sculptural fixtures can serve as eye-catching focal points.

Integrated LED Lighting: You can do wonders with versatile LED lighting, such as creative backlighting for decorative objects and accessories, or indirect lighting, including cove lighting and wall sconces. Take advantage of smart technology to highlight art, cabinetry, and architectural details.

Accent Lighting for Art and Architecture: Museum-grade lighting draws attention to artwork and decorative elements with precision and subtlety.

Bespoke Lighting: Install custom fixtures that are unique to your space, transforming any room into a personalized, luxurious experience.

BRING IT ALL TOGETHER

A truly luxurious home is defined not only by its furnishings, but also by the finishes that pull a room together. From custom cabinetry and parquetry flooring, to statement lighting and bespoke wallcovering, these finishing touches exude quality, craftsmanship, and individuality. The key to timeless luxury is found in balancing aesthetics with functionality by incorporating finishes that enhance aesthetic appeal while offering an enduring sense of exclusivity. By investing in a carefully chosen selection of high-end finishes, you can create a home that is not only beautiful and luxurious, but also unique. 

BEGUILE WITH TILE

Tiles can add style, interest and luxury to your home design.

Tiling can create focal interest in any room.

Tiles have been a fixture in design for thousands of years. Today, it’s hard to imagine a home that doesn’t have tiles installed somewhere. Whether indoors or outside, in the entryway, bathroom or framing the living room fireplace, tiles bring texture, color, pattern, and personality to any space. Functional and durable, tiles play a crucial role in shaping a home’s style.

EXPLORING TILE TYPES: MATERIALS, FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Here’s how the most popular types of tile stack up.

Ceramic

Made from a mixture of water, sand, clay and minerals, and then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, ceramic tiles are a perennial favorite thanks to their durability, clean aesthetic, and low cost. Their extra- hard surface makes them resistant to scratches, stains and moisture, and are very easy to maintain. They are number one on our list of budget-friendly options.

Porcelain

Slightly more expensive, porcelain tiles are made from the same materials as ceramic tiles, but are fired at even higher temperatures, resulting in a product that is more dense and less porous, and therefore extremely durable. They are available in a wide range of finishes, including some that mimic natural materials, such as stone or hardwood. Keep in mind that porcelain tiles can cost more to lay down because their density makes them challenging to cut and install.

Terracotta

A popular choice thanks to their rustic charm, terracotta tiles are higher up on the cost scale. Made from natural clay, terracotta tiles are suitable for both floors and walls. Prized for their durability, they can withstand heavy foot traffic, which is why they are often used in outdoor spaces. By nature, they are available only in a range of earth tones, from deep reds to light ochres.

Glass

In addition to being durable and water-resistant, glass tiles have a unique appeal due to their translucent quality. This results in an ability to reflect light, making any room in which they are installed appear brighter. Glass tiles are more expensive than ceramic or porcelain tiles.

Cement

Also known as concrete tiles, cement tiles are handmade from a mixture of cement, sand, and pigments. Prized for their durability, they will last practically forever, but come at a higher cost than glass, porcelain and ceramic tiles; however, cement tiles tend to be porous and can stain easily if not properly sealed. They’re also tricky to install, requiring a professional to ensure a perfect finish.

Natural stone brings a grounded, elemental aesthetic to a space.

Natural Stone

Whether marble, granite, travertine, limestone, or slate, natural stone tiles offer unparalleled beauty and luxury appeal, and are ideal for creating an elegant look in your home. They require a certain amount of maintenance, including regular sealing, and can be a very expensive option, depending on the type of stone they’re made from.

Mosaic Tiles

This gorgeous art form dates back more than 6,000 years. To make a mosaic tile, small fragments of stone, glass, ceramic or other materials are arranged to form intricate patterns or images. Popular for use on walls and backsplashes in bathrooms and kitchens, and on floors just about anywhere, mosaic tiles never go out of style. They are a perfect way to include a focal point in any space, or let you step out and express your style.

Use tiles to create patterns for visual appeal.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT TILE FOR EVERY ROOM

Tiles are uniquely versatilite, which makes them exceptionally popular. But don’t put a damper on your renovation plans by making the wrong choice! Here’s our advice for choosing the best tile for every space in your home.

Kitchen

In this space, tiles are most often used for backsplashes and flooring, thanks to their ability to withstand heat and stains. You can’t go wrong with porcelain, ceramic, or stone. Consider a terracotta floor for its warm, rustic charm, or glass tiles for a dynamic backsplash. For countertops, go for granite, slate and sealed marble.

Bathroom

Opt for tiles that can withstand moisture and wetness while remaining slip-resistant—think porcelain, glass or cement. If you’re looking for a spa-like feel, choose marble, travertine or slate. The bathroom is one room where you can go all out with your design, so take advantage of the many available colors, patterns, and finishes to strut your stuff!

Living Room

We recommend large-format tiles for the floor—in particular, stone, marble, limestone, travertine or porcelain with a faux wood finish. We love terracotta tiles as an accent for a fireplace surround or feature wall, as their rich color and texture will add depth and visual interest to your space.

Bedroom

This is your private, cozy place, so to create a sense of comfort and warmth, opt for tiles with softer textures and muted colors. Try marble or limestone for flooring and accent walls to provide a serene, elegant touch.

Outdoor Areas

Outside, resistance to the elements is the primary factor to consider when choosing the right tile. You can’t go wrong with terracotta or cement for patios and decks, and glass for the pool for an elevated look.

Marble can be used as tiling rather than in large slabs, offering a unique kind of luxury finish in the kitchen.

TOP TILE TRENDS FOR 2025: WHAT’S IN AND WHAT’S NEXT

We went right to the source to get the lowdown on what’s hot in tiles in 2025. We spoke with Sasha Waters, a design consultant at Fireclay Tiles—a California-based manufacturer of handmade ceramic, glass, and brick tiles. A ten-year veteran of the tile industry, Waters consults with homeowners and interior designers on the most appropriate tile for their project.

“I think we’re at a crossroads right now,” Waters says. “On one end of the spectrum is a huge interest in super-modern, large-format tiles of every kind. On the other is a trend towards smaller sizes and bold patterns like checkerboard and stripes.”

She adds, “While neutrals and warm tones will also be popular as a baseline, people are now really leaning into color.”

Waters goes on to say that clients are also gravitating towards grout joints, which were once the bane of tile installations, explaining, “Now, grout joints are in vogue because they add another element to the visuals.”

According to Waters, zellige tiles—handcrafted, glazed terracotta tiles from Morocco, known for their vibrant colors and unique, imperfect surface—are also trending.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER: FINDING THE PERFECT TILES FOR YOUR HOME

There’s a reason tiles have been around for thousands of years. In addition to being practical and functional, they can help shape the personality of your home by adding color, pattern, and texture. If you’re considering tiles for a home renovation, consider your lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and the practical needs of each space. With the right tiles, your home can be beautiful and unique, and built to last! 

THE ADVANTAGES OF HANDMADE TILES

When it comes to deciding between factory or handmade tiles, Sasha Waters of Fireclay Tiles is unwavering in her passion for the latter. She points out that ceramic tile-making is one of oldest known professions in the world, and it is a tradition that is honored by her company. “At least seven sets of hands touch every single tile that goes through our factory and kiln,” she says. “The love, care, and attention put into every single tile that we make is evident in the product itself.”

Waters explains that in addition to being extremely durable, handmade ceramic tiles have more of a bespoke feel because of the way they’re produced, saying, “The advantage of handmade ceramic tiles is that each batch is special. You get a different result every time. Each tile is unique, with a slight variance in size or glaze.”

She concludes, “A handmade tile is a beautiful thing. It preserves the history of how tiles are made—a holistic process from start to finish.”

ESCAPE TO ZADAR, CROATIA

Remarkable beaches, local cuisine ranging from fresh seafood to prosciutto and cheeses, and friendly residents have sparked Zadar’s rapid growth in popularity among Croatia’s cities. Ideally positioned in central Europe, Zadar is within easy traveling distance from much of the continent—ferries to other coastal Croatian towns, and across the Adriatic Sea to Italy, run regularly. Zadar is known for its Roman and Venetian ruins, and limestone and marble remnants of important sites pop up in many places around the picturesque Old Town. Those looking for property in Zadar, however, will want something more modern. There are a variety of options, from houses and villas to apartments and old stone residences. With the tourist market rapidly expanding in Zadar, and the potential for growth in the market, this burgeoning city is a great opportunity for investment or a second home.

Consider a second home in Zadar. Contact Dušan Lazar at CENTURY 21 Croatia. info@c21.hr | 0038664230006 | c21.hr/home.html
