Emmanuel Crespo received the National Institutes of Health Blueprint Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience (D-SPAN) Award for his research on how neocortical sensory processing can be altered by aberrant neural activity early in life. The grant supports the completion of his doctoral dissertation and four-year postdoctoral phase before starting his career as a tenure track faculty member with his own laboratory.

Sara Hansen, Ph.D. student in earth and ecosystem science, together with biology faculty member Anna Monfils and graphic artist Rhea Ewing were awarded a Botanical Society of America and American Society of Plant Taxonomists Advocacy Leadership Grant. They will be creating open-access modules that embrace individual identities and engage students in the process of botanical science and discovery.

Academic research Every student either writes a thesis/dissertation, produces a portfolio or completes a comprehensive exam, or completes a Plan B research paper.

HANDS-ON RESEARCH IN THEIR FIELDS

Alexandra Thelan, a doctoral psychology student, is analyzing factors that prevent survivors of military sexual trauma from receiving professional help.

David Varner, a graduate student in the mathematics department, completed research on how to improve the pedagogy of mathematical proofs.

Associated research You can gain experience working with associated university entities, such as the Center for Applied Research and Rural Studies and the CMU Research Corp.

Young-Kook Moon, an industrial/ organizational psychology doctoral student, researches employee motivations behind their desire to stay or leave their jobs.

RESEARCH-BASED FACILITIES

Dow Science Complex features modern research facilities and labs for specialized scientific and health-related fields such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

The Biosciences Building features advanced research equipment and houses 40 research-active faculty, classrooms and laboratories including an isotope lab, vivarium for aquatic life, herbarium, and Imaging Center for Scanning and Transmission electron microscopes.

The Engineering and Technology Building houses advanced networked laboratories for CAD/CAM, automation, material processing, material testing and manufacturing systems.

The Biological Station on Beaver Island provides facilities and programs for researching the island’s incomparable freshwater ecosystems, natural habitat and inland lakes. CMU is the only university in Michigan and one of only two in the Midwest that operates a Great Lakes island research station.

The Child Development and Learning Lab provides space for university students to observe, participate with, study and research children under the supervision of trained early childhood development teachers.

Health Professions Simulation Center includes two control rooms and fourteen patient rooms equipped with state-of-theart simulators including high-fidelity manikins used by medical, physician assistant and nursing students to develop clinical and best practice skills.

Voigtman Financial Lab is one of Grawn Hall’s business labs where you can analyze market data on Bloomberg Terminals, the same technology used by financial analysts on Wall Street.

Division I SPORTS

As a member of the Mid-American Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, we have 17 NCAA Division I sports. And you can attend all home games for FREE!

Sports for everyone

Club sports are student-led organizations for those who love competitive sports. You’ll stay active while competing against other universities in the sport you love.

Intramural sports with 20+ competitive sports to choose from, you’ll meet new people and participate in a variety of special events, leagues and tournaments.

Esports are also competitive at CMU. Our teams practice in their own esports arena in the Student Activity Center. Players take part in tournaments with other colleges, and several teams have gone on to national competitions.

The Student Activity Center has workout equipment, swimming pools and ball courts to help you stay active.

Did you know you don’t have to be a music major to audition for marching band? And it’s open to graduate students!

Have a hobby you love? There’s a group for that: 3-D printing, improv comedy, anime, fishing and lots more.

Michigan has long been known as the Water Winter Wonderland, and Mount Pleasant is located right in the middle of it all.

What Michiganders call “Up North” starts just a few miles from campus. Hop on I-127 for all the water and winter fun Michigan has to offer.

Want to travel? MBS International Airport is just 45 minutes to the east with daily flights to Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis.

Some student love Mount Pleasant so much they stay and open businesses here. Dog Central, Ignite Donuts, Max & Emily’s and Sleepy Dog Books are all owned by CMU alumni.

You’ll quickly get to know our big, little campus. On one end you’ll find the 175,000-square-foot Student Activity Center. On the other you’ll find hammocks strung between trees in Warriner Mall. The best part? It’s only a 15-minute walk in between.

Warriner Hall – Our administration building with the Registrar’s Office and other administrative offices.

Bovee University Center – A key campus gathering place, with meeting spaces, Central Eats food court, bank, CMU Bookstore and many student services and support offices.

Student Activity Center – Our main fitness center with pool, hot tub and sauna, and more than 35 intramural sports and programs.

Graduate Housing – Our residential housing has one-, two- and four-bedroom airconditioned suites with full kitchen, washer and dryer.

Foust Hall – Graduate studies administrative offices are here as well as the student health clinic.

Ronan Hall – Headquarters for many student services including graduate recruiting, the Career Development Center, Enrollment and Student Services, the Office of Global Engagement, Student Affairs and Study Abroad.

Park Library – Featuring 33 miles of movable bookshelves, more than 300 workstations, 24/7 computer area with printers, and a renowned historical library.

GRADUATE HOUSING

The East and West Buildings form the graduate housing community on campus. All residents have access to the lobbies with spacious lounge areas and large flat-screen TVs, a fully equipped fitness center and three meeting rooms.

One-, two- and four-bedroom air-conditioned suites are available:

» Rooms are semi-furnished with washers and dryers in each unit.

» Furnishings include a couch, end table, coffee table, queen-size bed in each bedroom, dresser, desk and desk chair.

» One- and four-bedroom units have a kitchen table and four chairs. Two-bedroom units have a raised table with bar stools.

» Electricity, water, heat, trash removal, basic cable, wireless internet and recycling are included in your rent.

All units offer accessible design. Special fully accessible units are available with enhanced clearances.

PRIMARY SOURCES

Graduate assistantships

Most of the funding for graduate students comes in the form of graduate assistantships and campus-based employment.

SECONDARY SOURCES

Tuition reimbursement programs

Academic departments provide numerous research, teaching and administrative assistantships. As a graduate assistant, you work for a department or unit and in return receive tuition waivers and stipends. There are both full-time and part-time GAs. Contact your academic department to see what’s available and how to apply.

Campus employment

There are jobs for students all over campus. You apply for campus positions by visiting Student Employment Services at cmich.edu/about/human-resources/ student-employment-opportunities or in person at 121 Bovee University Center. Students may work a maximum of 40 hours every two weeks on campus.

Student loans

Some corporations, schools and other organizations offer tuition reimbursement for employees and their families. Be sure to check with your employer or your parent’s or spouse’s employer.

Public service foundations and organizations

They may take some looking but be sure to contact your local Chamber of Commerce and other local service organizations to see if any provide university scholarship or subsidized loan programs.
