The Women’s Law Center of Maryland: Legal Protections When it Matters Most

March Women’s History Month Event with Katie Curran O’Malley

Designed with women in mind, Viewpoints is a welcoming environment that encourages members to take advantage of opportunities to “exhale” — to decompress, reflect and relax. The diverse and relevant programming includes presentations that challenge the status quo, encourage new solutions and ways of thinking, look ahead to future trends and opportunities and consider solutions to today’s toughest challenges.

Stay tuned for upcoming Viewpoints events!

For Women’s History Month, Viewpoints stayed true to its core value of focusing on women and women’s issues by welcoming Katie Curran O’Malley, one of Maryland’s most passionate advocates fighting to ensure the physical safety, economic security and autonomy of women throughout our state. The discussion was led by past Co-chair Patty Brown where members participated in a rich discussion on how to leverage our respective voices to create sustainable processes and policies to address violence in our communities.

A Center Club Founder and Board President Remembered

Honorable

George Levi Russell, Jr.

1929-2025

Beloved member for 61 years

The Honorable George Levi Russell, Jr. was a charter member of The Center Club and a trailblazer in Baltimore’s legal and civic communities. Over his distinguished career, he achieved many historic firsts: the first African American to serve on the Baltimore City Circuit Court, the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland, as City Solicitor of Baltimore, and as President of the Baltimore City Bar Association. He co-founded the minority-owned law firm Russell & Thompson, P.A., which later merged with Piper & Marbury, and eventually practiced at the Law Offices of Peter C. Angelos, P.C. In 1982, he established The Harbor Bank of Maryland, one of the country’s largest minority-owned banks. He was also instrumental in founding the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, where he served as the first Chairman of the Board. Known for his sharp intellect, quick wit, and charismatic presence, Judge Russell was deeply committed to equity and inclusion, bringing a vital and lasting perspective to the early days of the Center Club. His contributions left an indelible mark not only on our Club, but on the greater Baltimore community he served so passionately.

Larry Scriggins

1937-2025

Beloved member for 55 years

Larry P. Scriggins served two terms as President of our Board of Governors at The Center Club, from 1982 to 1987—a period of growth and vision for the Club. A generous and committed leader, he supported many Baltimore institutions, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Aquarium, and Center Stage. A longtime partner at Piper & Marbury, Larry specialized in Corporate Business Law and held leadership roles within the American Bar Association, including Chair of the Corporate, Banking, and Business Law Section and the Committee on Corporate Law. Even in retirement, “LP,” as he was affectionately known, continued giving back to our community through service on the boards of The Four Seasons Hotels and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He was also known for his deep love of gardening, tennis, and travel—bringing the same dedication and energy to his personal passions as he did to professional and civic life. Larry’s thoughtful leadership and steady presence helped shape the Center Club for more than five decades, and his legacy will be felt for years to come.
