Somercotes Academy, a school in Lincolnshire, took a groundbreaking step to reduce its carbon footprint, energy bills, and reliance on fossil fuels. With funding from the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) facilitated by Salix, the school upgraded its lighting, heating systems, and added solar panels.
The school partnered with CEMA Lighting to improve lighting throughout the site, from sports halls to canteens, corridors to classrooms. CEMA’s knowledgeable consultants recognised the school’s energy-saving goals and the need for a well-lit environment for staff and students.
“We are delighted with the lighting upgrades CEMA Lighting have completed across the academy. From initial surveys, to the installation works, the team were helpful, professional and completed works to specified deadlines.”
Rob Middleton, Facilities Officer, Lincolnshire Academies Gateway TrustCEMA’s knowledgeable consultants recognised the school’s energy-saving goals and the need for a well-lit environment for staff and students. They proposed a lighting scheme that replaced over 350 traditional lighting fixtures with CEMA’s exclusive high-efficiency luminaires. This provided the optimum lighting of 500 Lux as recommended by BSI BS EN 12464-1:2021 for communal areas and school environments.
CEMA’s installation team worked around the school to complete the project with minimal disruption. The team installed CEMA’s exclusive 200 lumens per watt Super High-Output HighBay in the main sports hall, offering some of the highest efficiency on the European market and maximising light output and energy savings.
CEMA’s LED High-Output Panel Lights were installed in classrooms, offering bright, clear energy-efficient lighting perfect for learning environments. The canteen areas now benefit from increased lighting levels using CEMA’s energy-efficient IP65 LED Linear Batten Light.
Since upgrading its lighting, Somercotes Academy has a future-proof lighting system that saves 25 tonnes of CO2 annually, the equivalent of planting 150 trees per year. The school also saves 63% on its annual lighting energy costs, which can now be redistributed to more vital learning projects.
