At Cedarhurst Senior Living, we live by six core values which drive each decision we make. We are intentional when it comes to being empathetic, passionate, positive, approachable, respectful and trustworthy. But for now, we want to focus on two values in particular: respectful and trustworthy.
Respect is the cornerstone of our communities. It's about recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. At Cedarhurst, we foster an environment where each person is valued, heard, and respected. From our dedicated team members to our cherished residents and their families, we strive to create a culture of mutual respect and understanding that enriches the lives of everyone who walks through our doors.
But respect alone is not enough. Trustworthiness is equally vital in building strong, meaningful relationships. Trust is the foundation upon which our communities are built, and we take great pride in earning the trust placed in us by our residents and their loved ones. Whether it's through transparent communication, reliable care, or steadfast support, we are committed to maintaining your trust each and every day.
In the pages of this issue of Flourish, you'll find inspiring stories that exemplify the values of being respectful and trustworthy. From heartwarming narratives of compassion and understanding to testimonials of unwavering support and reliability, these stories serve as a testament to the strength of our communities and the bonds that unite us.
As we come together to celebrate these values and the incredible individuals who embody them, let us be inspired to continue fostering a culture of respect and trust in all that we do. Together, we can create communities where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to live their best lives.
Thank you for your unwavering support and trust. We are honored to have you as part of the Cedarhurst family, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Cedarhurst Senior Living’s “Dream Come TRUE” program embodies our mission to create communities where every resident feels loved, valued, supported, and able to live life to the fullest. Each year, one resident in every community is chosen to fulfill a bucket list wish, making their dream a reality, and adding joy to their lives.
Bill Bareis, an experienced fisherman and resident at Cedarhurst of West Plains, recently enjoyed a Dream Come TRUE fishing trip on Bull Shoals Lake after nine years away due to health issues. His astonishment at the opportunity reflected his deep emotional connection to the water. While the trip held echoes of past fishing adventures, catching the first fish on his second cast was a memorable highlight, though he didn't find another bass as impressive as his past 12lb catch.
Despite his extensive fishing background, Bill approached the trip with gratitude and a sense of freedom from competition, appreciating the advancements in fishing technology showcased by the guide. Interacting with the guide, they shared stories and tips, deepening Bill's understanding of modern techniques.
This experience rekindled Bill's passion for fishing and reshaped his outlook on life. He encourages others facing similar challenges to pursue their dreams, embracing the journey and the lessons it brings. For Bill, the trip wasn't just about catching fish; it was about reclaiming a part of himself and embracing the joy of being back on the water.
Betty Kombrink's surprise casino trip, courtesy of Cedarhurst of Highland's Dream Come TRUE initiative, left her feeling grateful and amazed. Initially shocked by the news, Betty couldn't fathom why she was chosen. At the casino, she indulged in penny slots, recalling the days of playing quarter slots with her late husband. Despite no major wins, having her friends there made the experience priceless. The camaraderie, along with a delightful lunch, made the outing unforgettable. Betty even joked about the excess of food, bringing home leftovers for later.
The trip evoked memories of Betty's travels with her late husband, reminiscing about their adventures across every state. She contrasted those simpler times with the glitzy casino scene. Among the highlights was the limo ride, which made her feel like a movie star.
Reflecting on her time at Cedarhurst, Betty expressed gratitude for the community's role in enriching her life. Through Cedarhurst, she has rekindled old friendships and forged new ones, finding joy in the array of activities offered. The Dream Come TRUE outing exemplified how community living has enhanced Betty's life, creating cherished memories she'll treasure.
Gene Miller found solace in George Strait’s music during life’s trials. Strait’s songs became a refuge, resonating deeply with Gene’s own experiences. Learning to two-step with his late wife to “Amarillo by Morning” created cherished memories that intertwined love and music. When Cedarhurst of Lebanon’s Dream Come TRUE initiative granted Gene’s wish to see George Strait in concert, he was overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude.
The concert exceeded Gene’s expectations; each note a symphony of emotions. Strait’s performance of “Amarillo by Morning” during the encore was a poignant moment, evoking memories and feelings that had shaped Gene’s life. As a Vietnam veteran, Gene found comfort in Strait’s music, sharing a connection through their shared service.
For Gene, George Strait’s music wasn’t just entertainment; it was a lifelong companion. In the presence of his musical hero, surrounded by melodies that had carried him through hardship and joy, Gene experienced a moment of pure bliss, a testament to the power of music to heal and uplift.
Story Idea Submitted by Madison Jones Cedarhurst of Fort Wayne, Life Enrichment Director
Every spring, something magical happens at Cedarhurst of Fort Wayne. Amidst the blooming flowers and the warming sun, a family tradition takes flight—quite literally. For the past few years, the serene courtyard of Cedarhurst of Fort Wayne has transformed into a nurturing haven for mama ducks and their ducklings, culminating in an event the community fondly calls the “Waddle Spec-Quackular.”
This year was no different. Madison Jones, the Life Enrichment Director, recalls the excitement when they first noticed the signs of a nesting duck. “We noticed the mama duck collecting sticks and then found her consistently staying under a bush in the courtyard,” she shares. “It’s something we look forward to each year. It’s not every day you get to see
this, and it adds a unique charm to our community.”
Ensuring the well-being of these feathered guests became a community effort. Residents and staff united to provide a safe and comfortable environment. “These ducks were spoiled,” Madison laughs. “We fed them, kept water bowls out, and even laid baking sheets of water for the ducklings to play in. We posted signs to remind visitors to be mindful and planned to create an insulated area for next year’s nests.”
The anticipation built up to the grand event—the Waddle Spec-Quackular. Organizing this charming parade required thoughtful planning and a flexible approach. “It’s a day-by-day process,” Madison
admits. “We decorated, ordered cupcakes with little rubber ducks, and had ‘cheese and quackers’ for snacks. Residents made signs and wore duck bills. We created a pathway with residents lining up, holding posters and cardboard to keep the ducklings on track, while screen doors were used to guide them.”
The atmosphere on the day of the parade was filled with joy and excitement. Residents, staff, and family members gathered to watch the adorable ducklings make their way through the community. “Everyone loves it,” Madison says. “It becomes all anyone talks about. Residents check on them every morning, and family members peek in the evenings. It’s a unifying experience.”
However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. This year, two separate duck families nested in the courtyard, and one mama duck proved to be quite feisty. “She would flock at the glass and quack loudly if anyone got too close,” Madison recalls. “One time, she even flocked at one of our staff members giving them water! We had to adjust our plans and lead the babies to the pond while she flew ahead and eventually came back to collect them.”
Residents shared their delight in watching the ducklings’ antics. “They were just the cutest little things,” one resident reminisces. “We could watch them while we exercised and did activities. It just made you laugh. It was neat watching them play in the water and follow their mom around.”
The Waddle Spec-Quackular goes beyond just a charming event—it strengthens the bonds within the
Cedarhurst community. “It brings everyone together,” a resident notes. “My kids enjoyed watching them when they visited, and the little ones loved it. It gave us something to look forward to every day, and it was exciting, especially for those in memory care who don’t get to see such things often.”
Madison hopes that the memories created through this event inspire a sense of care and connection beyond the walls of Cedarhurst. “We hope this encourages others to care for our community. It felt so good to love and care for something other than ourselves.”
At its core, the Waddle Spec-Quackular exemplifies Cedarhurst of Fort Wayne’s mission to help individuals live life to the fullest and their commitment to being respectful. “The mama ducks felt safe enough to lay their eggs here,” Madison reflects. “It really took our whole community to pull together and keep it a safe environment for them.”
As the ducklings waddled through Cedarhurst, guided by the loving hands of its residents and staff, it was more than just a parade—it was a celebration of life, community, and the simple joys that bring people together. And as each spring brings a new batch of ducklings, the Waddle Spec -Quackular will continue to be a cherished tradition, uniting hearts and bringing smiles to all who witness it.

hen Bill Braker reflects on his 29-year tenure as the Director of the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, his eyes light up with the kind of passion that has driven his remarkable career. His leadership transformed Shedd into a world-renowned institution, most notably through the creation of the groundbreaking coral reef exhibit and the monumental Oceanarium. Now a cherished resident of Cedarhurst of Frankfort, Bill continues to inspire with his enduring commitment to marine biology and conservation.
One of Bill's proudest achievements during his time at the Shedd Aquarium was the conceptualization and execution of the stunning coral reef exhibit. “We took a swamp and turned it into a vibrant, 12-foot-deep coral reef, almost 40 feet wide, teeming with thousands of different fish,” Bill recalls with a smile. This exhibit not only captivated visitors but also displayed the delicate beauty and complexity of marine ecosystems. The crowning jewel of Bill’s career came in 1991 with the opening of the Oceanarium, a massive expansion that brought marine mammals into the heart of Chicago. Realizing this vision was no small feat. “Getting approval from the Board of Directors was the first hurdle,” Bill explains. “Then came the challenge of raising the necessary funds to bring the aquarium into the 20th century.” His perseverance and ability to garner support from a dedicated board of trustees were crucial in making the Oceanarium a reality.
John Shedd Reed, chairman of the aquarium’s board of trustees, once praised Bill’s “personal vision and perseverance” in bringing the Oceanarium to life. Reflecting on this, Bill humbly acknowledges the praise, emphasizing the importance of mutual trust and shared goals. “If you showed your full interest, he agreed with you with approval,” Bill says, appreciating the collaborative spirit of the board.
Bill retired in 1993, feeling satisfied with his accomplishments and confident that he had set Shedd Aquarium on a path to continued growth and success. “I’m proud of what we achieved and hopeful that the aquarium continues to thrive,” he reflects.
For aspiring conservationists and future leaders, Bill offers sage advice: “If you find something that sparks your interest, sink your teeth into it. Keep on, do not get discouraged. Choose the right path and do not allow pushbacks to deter you. Be realistic but always aim to find your dreams and goals.”
Bill's journey did not end with his retirement. After living with his daughter in Northfield, Minnesota, he made the decision to move to Cedarhurst of Frankfort, drawn by a brochure and the picturesque view of the old railway tracks that his father once worked on. “My father worked for the Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railway for 40 years,” Bill shares, “and I always enjoy the view right out my window here.”
At Cedarhurst, Bill remains an active and engaged member of the community. He participates in men’s activities and utilizes the gym, but he also finds joy in simpler pleasures. “I spend a lot of time observing the plant growth and the insects flying around. It is like a comic parade of cicadas,” he says with a chuckle. Bill’s commitment to environmental stewardship continues at Cedarhurst. He is involved with several conservation organizations, advocating for wildlife preservation even if he is no longer physically in the field. His passion for the natural world remains as strong as ever.
For those contemplating the transition to senior living, Bill offers thoughtful advice: “Look at what is offered and what they want to do for you. We need to recognize that it is not always others who are responsible for our bad luck. My favorite comic strip, Pogo, said it best: ‘We have met the enemy, and he is us.’ Many things we blame on others are actually our own doing. It is important to look at the situation and ask, ‘Am I responsible?’ and admit it to yourself.”
Bill Braker’s life is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and personal responsibility. From his transformative work at the Shedd Aquarium to his active involvement at Cedarhurst of Frankfort, he continues to inspire those around him, showing that every stage of life holds the potential for growth, joy, and meaningful contribution.

In the heart of Cedarhurst of Dyer, where trust and respect form the bedrock of relationships, a remarkable friendship blossoms between two residents, Nancy Krabbe and Sharon Masek. As the Dynamic Duo of Dyer, they exemplify the transformative power of companionship and the enduring spirit of community, weaving a tapestry of shared experiences and mutual understanding that deeply enriches their lives.
Their journey began with a simple encounter during a Cedarhurst activity, as Sharon fondly recalls, “I noticed Nancy’s radiant smile, and we struck up a conversation that flowed effortlessly. It was like meeting an old friend.” Similarly, Nancy remembers being drawn to Sharon’s warm demeanor and striking blue eyes, remarking, “We just clicked from the start. It felt like we had known each other for years.”
Despite their seemingly different backgrounds—Nancy, a former high school cheerleader with a fondness for outdoor activities, and Sharon, a retired psychotherapist—their personalities seamlessly complement each other. Both possess an unwaveringly positive outlook on life, a shared love for walking, and a deep-rooted belief in the importance of helping others.
For Nancy, whose upbringing on a farm instilled in her a deep sense of community and respect for others, Cedarhurst of Dyer felt like a natural fit. “Growing up with five siblings taught me the value of teamwork and cooperation,” she reflects. “In Cedarhurst, I found a community that shares those same values, and Sharon became an integral part of that.”
Similarly, Sharon’s professional background in psychotherapy has equipped her with the empathy and understanding necessary to foster meaningful connections within the community. “I’ve always believed in the power of human connection,” she explains. “At Cedarhurst, I’ve had the opportunity to continue that journey,
and Nancy has been by my side every step of the way.”
Their friendship, built on a foundation of trust, respect, and mutual understanding, thrives in the nurturing environment of Cedarhurst. They cherish each other’s individuality and perspectives, finding humor in their differences and laughter in their shared experiences. Nancy adds, “We may come from different backgrounds, but we share the same core values. That’s what makes our friendship so special.”
As they reflect on their time together, Nancy and Sharon find joy in the everyday adventures they share—whether it’s a leisurely walk, a heartfelt conversation, or a moment of shared laughter. Their friendship, like a continuous journey, unfolds with each passing day, enriching their lives and reminding them of the beauty of true companionship.
Looking ahead, Nancy and Sharon eagerly anticipate the continuation of their friendship, embracing each day with the same values and zest for life that brought them together. They cherish the moments they share and the memories they create, knowing that with each step they take, they are walking hand in hand, true friends bound by an unbreakable bond. “We’ve been through so much together,” Nancy says with a smile. “And I know that no matter what life throws our way, we’ll always have each other.”
I’ve always believed in the power of human connection. At Cedarhurst, I’ve had the opportunity to continue that journey, and Nancy has been by my side every step of the way.

Story Idea Submitted by Nallely Tinoco | Cedarhurst of Naperville, Life Enrichment Director
Nestled within the inviting community of Cedarhurst of Naperville resides a man whose journey embodies respect, trust, and dedication. Jerry Williams, a resident since May 2022, not only found solace and healing within Cedarhurst’s walls but also discovered a newfound purpose: to uplift and support his fellow residents in their own journeys.
Jerry’s path to Cedarhurst wasn’t without its challenges. Battling a severe infection and undergoing intensive medical treatment, he found himself at a crossroads of uncertainty. “I was very sick...I came to Cedarhurst in May 2022,” Jerry recounts, reflecting on the pivotal moment that led him to this vibrant community.
Despite the initial hurdles, Jerry’s first impressions of Cedarhurst were marked by a sense of belonging. “I liked the architecture and decoration...the layout,” he recalls, noting the comforting familiarity that greeted him upon arrival. It wasn’t just the physical space that resonated with Jerry; it was the noticeable sense of safety and acceptance that embraced him, courtesy of the caring staff and welcoming environment.
“At home” is how Jerry describes his experience at Cedarhurst, a sentiment echoed through the bonds he’s forged and the connections he’s nurtured. From the attentive nursing staff to the supportive rehabilitation services, every interaction at Cedarhurst
of Naperville reaffirmed Jerry’s trust and respect for the community.
But Jerry’s journey transcends personal comfort; it’s about paying it forward and ensuring that every resident feels seen and heard. As the President of the Resident Council, Jerry has taken on the responsibility of being a guiding light for his peers. “The more I helped, the more I felt at home,” he shares, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between lending a helping hand and finding a sense of belonging.
Jerry’s profound sense of purpose stems from a deeply personal experience. “It is important to me because I was very sick and came close to not waking up on the operating table,” he reveals, recounting a moment of profound realization amidst the uncertainty of his health. “When I woke up, I said to my kids ‘god wants me to do something’.” In that crucial moment, Jerry’s purpose became clear, although uncertainty lingered regarding its realization. “I wasn’t certain if it was within Cedarhurst’s walls, but then I realized my calling: to ensure that fellow residents experience the same sense of belonging and comfort that I do.”
For Jerry, every interaction is an opportunity to extend kindness and support. Whether it’s through welcoming newcomers or facilitating resident meetings to address concerns, his commitment to fostering a sense of community is unwavering.
... I realized my calling: to ensure that fellow residents experience the same sense of belonging and comfort that I do.
Reflecting on his tenure at Cedarhurst of Naperville, Jerry highlights the strides the community has made in enhancing resident experiences. “Almost every department has come along...communication has improved, dining has gotten better,” he observes, attributing these positive changes to collaborative efforts between residents and staff.
When asked about his hopes for the future, Jerry’s resolve shines through. “Even if I decline, I will try to do the same things I have been doing... helping staff and residents until I can’t anymore,” he declares, a testament to his enduring spirit and dedication to service.
As Jerry continues to enrich the lives of those around him, his journey serves as a beacon of respect, trust, and community at Cedarhurst of Naperville.
