A Year of Impact, Unity & Hope

In 2024, Cedarhurst Senior Living and its Cedar Creek communities partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association in a significant, heartfelt commitment to supporting Alzheimer’s research, awareness, and family resources. Throughout the year, all 50 communities joined together to participate in 35 walks across eight states, contributing to Cedarhurst’s collective goal of making a tangible impact in the fight against Alzheimer’s. The dedication of Cedarhurst’s residents, team members, families, and partners resulted in raising more than $62,000, with Cedarhurst’s sponsorship investments bringing the total contribution to nearly $145,000.

This achievement highlights Cedarhurst’s dedication to building supportive communities and its partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association to promote research and advocacy. Alzheimer’s disease affects millions, including many Cedarhurst residents and their families, making this partnership especially relevant. Through its support of Alzheimer’s research, Cedarhurst looks to contribute to progress in understanding and assisting those impacted by the disease, offering resources and raising awareness for families affected. Together, Cedarhurst and the Alzheimer’s Association work to address this critical issue that impacts so many lives.

A Season of Engagement and Outstanding Participation

Cedarhurst communities demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and team spirit throughout the walk season, with some standing out for their exceptional participation and fundraising efforts. Cedarhurst of St. Charles led the way, with an impressive 43 team members joining their local walk, while the communities in Owensboro and Arnold followed

closely behind, each rallying over 30 participants. Cedarhurst of Canton topped the fundraising efforts by gathering an impressive $6,345, while Cedarhurst of Woodland Hills and the Cedarhurst home office both contributed over $5,000.

As donations continue through December 31, Cedarhurst’s current total of $62,037 ranks 36th nationally among National Teams, a significant achievement that underscores the communities’ widespread commitment to the cause of Alzheimer’s.

Creative Fundraising Efforts Across Communities

To raise funds, Cedarhurst communities hosted a variety of events that not only generated contributions but also fostered closer

connections among residents, families, and staff. From lively Goat Galas and Pet Fashion Shows to community carnivals, silent auctions, and classic car shows, each event was infused with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose. These gatherings, fueled by creativity and compassion, allowed Cedarhurst’s communities to come together and contribute meaningfully toward Alzheimer’s awareness and research.

Almir Sajtovic, President of Cedarhurst Senior Living, emphasized the importance of these efforts, saying, “Reaching this milestone is a testament to the dedication and compassion that runs throughout every Cedarhurst community. Alzheimer’s disease affects so many of our residents, families, and team members, which is why supporting research and resources for this cause is incredibly meaningful to all of us. By investing in the Alzheimer’s Association through both sponsorship and active fundraising, we’re not only contributing to vital research but also showing our unwavering commitment to those impacted by this disease. I’m so proud of the efforts of our teams across all our communities and grateful for the way they continue to come together to make a difference.”

The Impact of Cedarhurst’s Contributions

The funds raised by Cedarhurst directly contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association’s comprehensive approach to Alzheimer’s research, family support, and public policy initiatives. Each dollar invested supports groundbreaking research aimed at developing diagnostic tools and treatments that can improve quality of life, enhance early detection, and extend independence for those affected. Additionally,

contributions sustain essential services such as a 24/7 Helpline, support groups, and educational resources, which offer comfort, guidance, and connection to millions of families and caregivers.

“The Alzheimer’s Association is grateful for Cedarhurst Senior Living’s commitment to our mission. By activating as 2024 Walk sponsors, fundraising teams and community leaders at dozens of Walk to End Alzheimer’s events throughout the country, Cedarhurst connected vital Association resources to thousands of families,” said Delia Jervier, Regional Vice President, Alzheimer’s Association. “We appreciate their thoughtful investment and dedicated support and are delighted to celebrate their impact on the 2024 Walk season.”

As Cedarhurst looks ahead to the future, it remains committed to continuing this vital work. By partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association, Cedarhurst is not only raising funds and awareness but also building a compassionate community where residents, families, and staff are united in a shared mission to bring hope to those affected by Alzheimer’s.

JIM MATHIASCH: Flying High Again

At 85 years old, James “Jim” Mathiasch thought his flying days were long behind him. But thanks to Cedarhurst Senior Living’s Dream Come TRUE program, Jim found himself back in the pilot’s seat, fulfilling a dream he never thought he’d revisit. It’s a story of resilience, passion, and rediscovering the joy of flight.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Born and raised in Braidwood, Illinois, Jim’s early life was shaped by hard work and dedication. Before finding his way to the cockpit, Jim served as a police officer for two years and later worked as a welder at Caterpillar Tractor Company. His life took a significant turn in 1962 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama. There, under the guidance of his sergeant, Jim began his flying lessons as a civilian pilot.

“I’ve always been interested in flying,” he recalls. Jim quickly developed a passion for aviation and logged his first solo flight after just eight hours of instruction. However, life’s responsibilities eventually pulled him away from the skies. He married, raised a family, and ran a business, putting his flying dreams on hold.

The Dream That Never Faded

Though Jim’s aviation days were behind him, the memories of his time in the air never left. After moving to Cedarhurst of Naperville two years ago, Jim continued to dream of flying again. When he learned about the Dream Come TRUE program, designed to help residents fulfill their lifelong wishes, Jim eagerly jumped at the chance.

“I never thought I’d fly again,” he admitted. But the opportunity to return to the skies proved irresistible. Jim’s enthusiasm was mixed with a bit of apprehension—after all, it had been decades since he last took control of an aircraft.

Back in the Cockpit

On September 19, Jim was treated to a day he would never forget. After being chauffeured to the airport in a limousine, Jim was greeted by the team at JWA Flight School. With an experienced instructor by his side as co-pilot, Jim took his place in the cockpit once again.

“I felt excited, nervous, and apprehensive,” he said. The takeoff was nerve-wracking, but as the plane lifted into the air, Jim’s confidence returned. His copilot served as a comforting presence, giving him the security he needed to enjoy the experience fully.

Taking control of the plane, Jim marveled at how natural it felt to be back in the air. “It felt like I was back where I belonged,” he said with a smile. The most challenging part, he admitted, was landing, but with the instructor’s guidance, Jim brought the plane down safely.

“They took my driver’s license, but they couldn’t take my wings,” Jim said, reflecting on the experience.

A Celebration to Remember

After a successful flight, Jim’s day continued with a celebratory lunch at Harry Caray’s, where he enjoyed what he described as “the best steak I ever had.” The limousine ride, the flight, and the meal combined to make the day one of the most memorable of Jim’s life. “Everything was unexpected, but I thoroughly enjoyed every part,” he shared.

Though his family couldn’t attend the flight in person, Jim’s son called to wish him well, and Jim proudly shared photos of the experience with his loved ones. The joy of getting his wings back was evident in every aspect of his day.

An Inspiration to Others

For Jim, getting back into the cockpit wasn’t just about flying, it was about proving to himself that he could still achieve something he thought was out of reach. “I’m glad I didn’t give up on something I wanted to do,” he said, reflecting on the experience.

His story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Jim hopes that his journey will inspire others, regardless of age, to pursue their passions. “If you’ve got something you’ve always wanted to do, go for it,” he advised.

As Jim looks back on his life, he does so with gratitude for the support he’s received at Cedarhurst, where staff members helped make his dream come true. “It was such a great feeling,” he said. “I smiled ear to ear.”

With his spirit soaring higher than ever, Jim Mathiach’s story is one of adventure, hope, and the timeless thrill of flight.

be like,” she shared. “The second I stepped into the basket, I was nervous, but mostly excited. In a balloon, there is nothing between you and the open sky. It felt like standing on a cloud.”

For Leona, a lifelong St. Charles County resident who raised five children there, soaring above her hometown held special meaning. She could see local landmarks like the St. Louis Arch in the distance. “I have no words,” Leona reflected. “It was unbelievable to have this adventure right here in the county where I grew up.”

As Leona looked out over the landscape below, memories of her late husband, Robert, came to mind. Married for 62 years, Robert would have been both astonished and delighted to see her take flight. “I thought of him the entire time. I kept thinking, ‘Can you believe that I am up here?’ It felt like he was there with me, laughing along. I’ll never forget this experience—it will stick with me until I’m gone.”

For Carolyn, the ride brought back memories of her first balloon trip, which she arranged as a surprise for her husband. This time, the experience felt more intimate and personal. “The basket was smaller, and we got to fly lower over neighborhoods, where people

waved, and kids ran out to watch us. That was my favorite part,” Carolyn said with a smile.

Carolyn’s adventurous spirit has grown over the years, and she loves sharing experiences with friends she has made along the way. “It was wonderful sharing this with Leona and Austin, our Cedarhurst team member who came with us,” she shared. “Up there, all you hear is the fire from the burner and, occasionally, a dog barking below. It’s so peaceful.”

Both women were deeply grateful for the opportunity Cedarhurst provided through the Dream Come TRUE program, which offers residents the chance to fulfill lifelong dreams. “I always hear about senior living places being so boring, but Cedarhurst made this dream come true for us. What a place this is,” Leona said. “Now when I see a balloon, I can say I know what that feels like!”

For Carolyn, this adventure affirmed her belief in the power of pursuing dreams at any age. “I want others to know that you’re never too old to try new things,” she said. “Focus on the things you can still do, not what you cannot. Do not let age slow you down!”

The journey left both Leona and Carolyn with unforgettable memories, ones that they look forward to sharing with family and friends for years to come. From the peaceful, breathtaking views to the playful exchanges with people on the ground, this experience highlighted not just the beauty of floating above the world but also the joy of chasing lifelong dreams, regardless of age.

A FULL-CIRCLE REUNION:

From the Classroom to Care at Cedarhurst

Aconnection forged in the classroom has stood the test of time, bringing two women together in the most unexpected way. Trista McWilliams, now the Executive Director at Cedarhurst of Des Peres, was just a young girl when she first encountered Margie Ackerman, her secondgrade teacher at Deer Creek Elementary in Deer Creek, Illinois. In a twist of fate, their paths crossed again in September 2022 when Mrs. Ackerman moved into Cedarhurst as a resident.

Trista’s memories of her time in Mrs. Ackerman’s classroom are vivid. She recalls the special care her teacher provided when she was newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, especially when Mrs. Ackerman made sure Trista took her snack breaks or gently assisted her if she wasn’t feeling well. In a gesture of kindness that Trista will never forget, Mrs. Ackerman once drove her home for lunch after she realized Trista had forgotten hers.

Decades later, Trista, now an accomplished leader in the senior living industry, was overjoyed when she discovered that Mrs. Ackerman, the teacher who had such a positive impact on her childhood, had come to live at Cedarhurst of Des Peres. Their reunion was emotional, with both women sharing memories, laughter, and even a few tears.

“She was more than just a teacher,” Trista reflected. “She was a mentor during a challenging time in my life. Having her remind me to take care of myself, knowing she was looking out for me, meant everything. Hearing her say she’s proud of the adult I’ve become was incredibly heartwarming.”

Mrs. Ackerman’s influence extended beyond the walls of her classroom. She took her students on memorable field trips to her home and instilled in them a love for learning. Trista has carried these lessons with her into adulthood and now can give back. As Executive Director, she ensures Mrs. Ackerman is cared for and comfortable in her new home.

“Mrs. Ackerman gave so much to me as a child. Now, I have the chance to return that care,” Trista said. Their story is a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact teachers have on our lives.

At Cedarhurst of Salina, Dining Cook Bob Guerra brings a unique blend of culinary expertise, a passion for woodworking, and a deeply caring spirit that has left a lasting mark on the community. From creating delicious meals to crafting personalized nameplates, Bob goes out of his way to ensure that each day is a little brighter for both residents and staff.

Bob’s dedication to his role goes beyond his culinary skills. Known for his warm and approachable nature, Bob finds joy in building connections with the residents he serves. “What I enjoy most about working at Cedarhurst is getting to know the residents,” he shared. “I always want to ensure the residents enjoy their meals and am always listening to them regarding their likes, dislikes, and opinions.” This commitment to meeting the needs of residents not only enhances their dining

experience but also fosters a sense of comfort and familiarity in their daily lives.

Beyond the kitchen, Bob’s influence extends into the personal touches he brings to Cedarhurst. His woodworking and laser-printing hobby has become a source of joy for the community. With a talent for creating unique, handcrafted items, Bob has made nameplate signs for every manager at the Salina community. “I loved being able to put a smile on their face,” Bob said. “They are supportive, and I feel this is my way of showing appreciation for them.” Each piece he creates is a testament to his thoughtful nature and his genuine desire to contribute positively to the workplace atmosphere.

Bob’s gestures of kindness do not go unnoticed. Alex Neff, Divisional Director of Operations, admires the personal impact that Bob has on the community, both in and out of the dining room. “What makes Bob stand out is that he’s not just passionate about working in the kitchen; he truly wants to make residents, staff and families happy,” Alex noted. “By having such a strong passion and a friendly personality, the entire Cedarhurst of Salina community radiates positivity and happiness.” In fact, Alex and Almir Sajtovic, President of Cedarhurst Senior Living, both received handmade wooden signs from Bob, a gesture that, in Alex’s words, exemplifies the

family-oriented culture that Cedarhurst values.

Melissa Holcom, Executive Director at Cedarhurst of Salina, also praises Bob’s exceptional dedication to his team. “Bob is always putting others first. He is always willing to help his team by doing what is best for everyone,” she shared. Whether it is picking up extra shifts, mentoring new associates, or stepping in to help colleagues with kitchen tasks, Bob consistently goes the extra mile. His willingness to lend a hand makes a significant impact on the team, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment where everyone feels valued.

For Bob, caring about the community goes beyond words; he shows it through countless thoughtful actions. He makes trophies for BINGO tournaments, frames for associates, and signs for resident activities. During resident game nights, he brings out freshly baked cookies to add a little sweetness to the competition.

“Bob has the biggest heart,” Melissa said. “He makes us laugh and

picks us up when we are having a bad day. He is always putting the residents first, and he does everything from the heart.”

One moment in particular stands out as a beautiful illustration of Bob’s bond with the residents.

During a conversation with a resident, Bob mentioned his collection of vintage beer steins. Sensing the resident’s interest, Bob returned the next day with one of his treasured steins to give as a keepsake. This thoughtful gesture spoke volumes about his attentiveness and his desire to make the residents feel seen and appreciated.

Through his culinary talents, woodworking creations, and sincere acts of kindness, Bob embodies the core values of Cedarhurst Senior Living. His dedication to going beyond in his role has shaped the community’s atmosphere, making Cedarhurst of Salina a place of warmth, connection, and care. Bob’s presence is not just a benefit to the residents and staff, it is an essential part of what makes Cedarhurst feel like home.

Angel Embrace Network Brings Comfort & Joy to Cedarhurst of West Plains Memory Care Residents

by

Cedarhurst of West Plains hosted a heartwarming event that touched the lives of its 21 memory care residents. The Angel Embrace Network, a nonprofit based in St. Louis, traveled to the community to deliver personalized baby dolls to each resident, providing comfort, companionship, and joy.

The organization, founded by the family of Verdie Mae Mills—a former certified nursing assistant (CNA) and activity assistant who passed away from Alzheimer’s— brought this special program to West Plains. For the Mills family, the event was not only about honoring Verdie’s legacy but also about providing meaningful emotional support to those living with memory loss.

Kimberly Harralston, the Life Enrichment Director at Cedarhurst of West Plains, shared how the partnership came to life. “Verdie was my friend, and a former coworker. After she passed, I connected with her family, and we organized this visit. The event was magical as tears of joy were shed, and the residents responded with smiles, hugs, and affection for their new dolls.”

Each baby doll was personalized with thoughtful details, such as clothing that reflected the resident’s personal interests. For instance, one resident named Gary received a doll wearing a shirt featuring a motorcycle

print, honoring his love for motorcycles. The Angel Embrace Network ensures that every doll sparks a memory, with each resident receiving a doll specifically made to resonate with them.

Debbie Mohr, President and Executive Director of the Angel Embrace Network, explained the inspiration behind the program. “Our mother loved her dolls, and they brought her comfort during her battle with Alzheimer’s. After seeing how much these dolls helped her and other residents, we knew we had to share that comfort with others. That’s how Angel Embrace was born.”

During the adoption ceremony, the Angel Embrace team arrived with wagons filled with baby dolls, balloons, and cookies, creating a festive atmosphere. Residents were moved to tears, many immediately cradling and caring for their new dolls as if they were real babies. “It was the best moment of my 31-year career,” Kimberly remarked. “This experience will bring long-term comfort to our residents.”

It was the best moment of my 31-year career. This experience will bring long-term comfort to our residents.
- KIMBERLY HARRALSTON

Angel Embrace’s mission of love and support continues to grow, and they provide these dolls free of charge to communities like Cedarhurst. The event reflected the caring legacy of Verdie Mae Mills, a woman who dedicated her life to helping others.

Giving Cedarhurst’s Home Office Shares Holiday Spirit with Residents THE TREE

Each holiday season, Cedarhurst Senior Living brings warmth and joy to residents without family nearby through its cherished annual Giving Tree program. This thoughtful initiative, held at the Cedarhurst home office, allows team members to select names from a Giving Tree, each representing a resident from one of the communities who may not otherwise receive a gift. Team members then carefully chose and delivered a personalized present to brighten that resident’s Christmas celebration.

According to Tara Powell, Cedarhurst’s Director of Education and Engagement, the Giving Tree is more than just a holiday gesture—it’s an embodiment of Cedarhurst’s core values of Empathy and Passion. “It’s important to Cedarhurst that all residents feel valued and loved, especially during the holidays,” she shared. “This program allowed the home office team the chance to provide that by sending personalized gifts to those who did not have someone to provide a gift for them during the holiday.”

The thoughtfulness that went into each gift was extraordinary. Before shopping, home office team members received a form with special details about each resident’s unique interests, including favorite snacks, colors, sports teams, hobbies, and even particular items they needed. By tailoring gifts to each resident’s personal tastes, team members created moments that made each recipient feel known and valued. These presents were delivered just in time for each community’s holiday party, where the gifts were opened in the company of fellow residents and staff.

As Powell noted, residents and team members alike saw Cedarhurst’s commitment to its values in action. “Through this program, Empathy and Passion are not just words— they are values we live out,” she said. The Giving Tree brought joy and connection to the holiday season, offering genuine care to those who call Cedarhurst home.

Wings of

Bill’s journey of creating these unique cardinals began unexpectedly. Years ago, after a fishing trip, he admired a cardinal windmill in his friend’s yard. To his surprise, his friend gave him one, sparking Bill’s interest in making his own. Not long after, a neighbor who had been helping care for Ruth Ann requested a cardinal, and when Bill presented it to her, she became emotional, explaining that the bird symbolized the spirit of lost loved ones. This touching revelation transformed Bill’s simple hobby into a cherished way to honor memories and bring comfort to others. He began giving cardinals to family and friends, sharing their symbolic warmth.

Bill Hash’s Heartfelt Tradition

When Bill moved into Cedarhurst with Ruth Ann, he found a warm, supportive community that soon felt like an extended family. After Ruth Ann’s passing, Bill decided to stay, recognizing the deep bond he had formed with fellow residents and staff. Wanting to give back to the place that had provided such comfort, he approached the Cedarhurst team with a simple question: could he make a cardinal for every new resident?

It was an ambitious undertaking—Cedarhurst of Lebanon houses over fifty residents—but Bill embraced the challenge. Today, he has made more than 60 cardinals just for Cedarhurst residents, each one crafted with care. Bill’s process is meticulous: he cuts, shapes, and paints the wood, adding details like the beak and eyes before mounting each bird on a dowel. He ensures they are sturdy, so residents can enjoy them for years to come. “They last a good while,” he says with pride. “I put a lot of love into each bird.”

Bill’s cardinals bring joy to all who receive them. When a new resident arrives, he personally visits their apartment, asking where they would like their cardinal placed so they can see it from their favorite chair or window. Even residents with windows instead of patios get to enjoy the birds, as Bill crafts special taller stakes to give each cardinal a proper view. The thoughtful placement ensures the cardinals are visible reminders of comfort and connection.

For some, like a resident who asks the aides to open his blinds each morning to see his cardinal, the birds become part of their daily routine. Bill has even installed cardinals in the memory care courtyard so all residents, regardless of where they live in the community, can enjoy their beauty.

Beyond his woodworking, Bill is a beloved fixture at Cedarhurst. He offers rides to residents who can no longer drive, joins new residents for meals, and helps at

every community barbecue, his apron on and grill at the ready. As Executive Director Kim Shumate explains, Bill’s welcoming presence goes beyond his cardinals. “He meets and greets all of our residents, making them feel part of the community,” she says. “He’s always asking if there’s anything he can do to help.”

Bill’s cardinals resonate deeply with residents and their families. As Kim notes, moving into senior living can be a challenging transition, but Bill’s cardinals provide a warm welcome and an instant sense of belonging. “They are touched by his gift,” she says, “and the meaning behind it.” This simple, heartfelt gesture is a reminder that Cedarhurst is more than a residence; it is a family, strengthened by acts of kindness like Bill’s.

For Bill, each cardinal also serves as a tribute to Ruth Ann, a symbol of love and memory. He placed one at her gravesite and has one outside his own patio door, a personal reminder of the time they shared and the life they built together. The work helps him feel close to her and keeps her spirit alive within the community they both came to cherish.

Bill has since stopped counting the cardinals he has made, estimating they are now in nine different states, including as far as Alaska. Yet, his mission remains the same: to bring joy and comfort to each new resident who walks through Cedarhurst’s doors. “Everyone here is truly family,” he says. “They look after each other and care about each other.” In every red cardinal’s wing, he spreads that love, leaving a legacy of warmth and belonging that will continue as Cedarhurst continues to grow.

EXPLORING THE WORLD, INSPIRING OTHERS

In the quiet halls of Cedarhurst of Beaumont, Pattye Snyder’s presence radiates a vibrant spirit shaped by decades of teaching, traveling, and storytelling. A retired educator, world traveler, and avid photographer, Pattye’s journey has taken her from American classrooms to the heart of Tanzania, across five continents and into 25 countries. At the heart of her adventures lies an indomitable determination to live fully, no matter what the challenges.

THE TEACHER WHO NEVER STOPPED LEARNING

Pattye’s passion for education was inspired by her parents, both of whom were teachers. She followed their path, teaching elementary and middle school students in Kansas and Illinois before earning a master’s degree in special education. In the U.S., her teaching style relied on resources and creativity. In Tanzania, however, her ingenuity was tested like never before.

While volunteering at a juvenile prison, she quickly adapted to an environment devoid of the basic amenities she had taken for granted. “I assumed I’d be teaching math and English,” she wrote, “but reality quickly hit me, no electricity, scarce food, and boys lucky to own a single set of clothes.”

Pattye taught her students practical skills, planting gardens and harvesting corn by hand. “It’s nice to speak a little English, but it’s even more important to learn how to grow food when you’re starving,” she explained. Her resourcefulness turned every challenge into a teaching moment, and her compassion left a profound impact on the lives of her young students.

THROUGH THE LENS: CAPTURING BEAUTY AND HUMANITY

Pattye’s passion for photography blossomed alongside her love of travel. Her lens became a way to document the diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes she encountered. From photographing wildlife during a photo safari in Eastern Africa to capturing the smiles of villagers in Madagascar, Pattye’s images tell stories of connection and resilience.

“I loved to photograph flowers, nature, and people,” she shared. “Even with language barriers, a smile and genuine friendship crossed boundaries.” Her photos showcase not just the beauty of the world but also the strength and spirit of its people.

CLIMBING MOUNTAINS, LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY

Pattye’s adventurous spirit is best encapsulated by her mantra: “WATCH ME!” Born from defiance against doubters who underestimated her due to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, this phrase has driven her to achieve the seemingly impossible.

After her first total hip replacement, she climbed part of Machu Picchu. Years later, despite health limitations, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of scaling part of Mount Kilimanjaro. “I wasn’t fast, but that wasn’t the point,” she reflected. “The point is, I did it!” Rainbows, which she often encountered during her adventures, became a symbol of hope and perseverance. From Lake Victoria in Kenya to Madagascar’s rainforests, these moments reaffirmed

her belief that she could overcome any obstacle.

LESSONS FROM A WELL-LIVED LIFE

Despite enduring 19 joint replacement surgeries, Pattye has never let health challenges define her. For her, determination is key. “When you set goals, not achieving them isn’t failure—it’s a chance to reassess and reframe what you can accomplish,” she advised.

This mindset allowed her to pivot when she couldn’t climb all of Kilimanjaro, finding alternative ways to experience the mountain’s majesty. Her resilience and adaptability inspire those around her to dream big and persevere.

A LEGACY OF LOVE AND ADVENTURE

Now residing at Cedarhurst of Beaumont, Pattye continues to inspire through her stories and photos. Her life serves as a testament to the power of courage, creativity, and compassion.

“I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had,” she said. “They’ve made me stronger, more understanding, and deeply appreciative of the people and places that have shaped me.”

From classrooms to the African bush, Pattye

Snyder’s life is a celebration of adventure and heart, a reminder to us all that no dream is too big and no obstacle insurmountable when met with determination and grace.

COMMUNITY Celebrating

Art, Stories, and Connection at Cedar Creek of Logansport

Cedar Creek of Logansport recently hosted a vibrant celebration of community and creativity, unveiling a mural painted by students from the Logansport High School Art Club alongside an inspiring art show featuring works by resident artists. The event, which highlighted the importance of intergenerational connections, showcased the talents of local youth and the life stories of Cedar Creek’s residents through art.

The mural, designed and painted by eight students under the direction of Logansport art teacher Nikki Ingalls, captured the essence of Logansport’s rich history. Iconic local landmarks, including Mr. Happy Burger, Felix the Cat, The State Theatre, and a historic train, were chosen

in collaboration with Cedar Creek residents, who shared their fond memories to help shape the design. This project not only brought history to life for the students but also opened doors to engaging conversations between generations.

“It’s been interesting because a lot of the students had never seen some of the things featured on the mural,” said Jennifer Poole, Executive Director of Cedar Creek of Logansport. “They weren’t alive yet. It’s been fascinating to hear them learn from the residents as they talk about the past.” The mural, with blank spaces left for future additions, serves as an evolving testament to Logansport’s community and its ever-growing story.

Ingalls shared that while the original plan was for a single cohesive image, the wide span of decades and experiences made it more complex. The final design, taking over 42 hours to paint, became a diverse collage of cherished memories. Senior student Carlina Zamarripa, new to Logansport, found herself learning about local history through the stories of residents who stopped by to chat while she worked. “I didn’t know much about the locations in the mural, but I learned so much from the residents while painting,” Zamarripa said.

In addition to the mural, Cedar Creek residents displayed their own works in an art show that reflected personal stories and artistic journeys. Among the resident artists was Judy Jones, mother of Logansport High School Principal Matt Jones, who presented a serene painting of fishermen in a misty landscape. A self-described tomboy, Jones shared how her love for the outdoors with her father inspired much of her work.

Helen Gahan, another resident artist, displayed her remaining two paintings after losing most of her work during

Hurricane Ian in 2022. Gahan, a fan of Bob Ross, used his techniques in many of her creations. The show also featured works by Judy Leffert and Sharon Booher, who exhibited her mother’s art, as well as Dave Barron, a Cedar Creek employee who contributed several of his own paintings.

“Putting together this art show was an easy decision, knowing how many talented artists we have here,” said Brya Wickersham, Cedar Creek of Logansport’s Director of Sales. “It brought everyone together and really allowed our residents to shine.” The event reinforced Cedar Creek’s dedication to recognizing and celebrating residents past achievements and continued passions.

Poole added, “This experience has been deeply meaningful for everyone involved, as watching the younger generation connect with our residents through shared memories creates a lasting and profound impact.”

CEDARHURST Angels

A Community of Compassion at Cedarhurst of Dyer

Story

At Cedarhurst of Dyer, a special group known as the “Cedarhurst Angels” embodies the spirit of friendship and kindness, creating a compassionate community among residents. The Cedarhurst Angels began with a single act of kindness, but it has since grown into a meaningful tradition that brings comfort and companionship to those in need.

The origins of the Cedarhurst Angels trace back to a morning devotion led by Karen Koniuszy, Life Enrichment Coordinator at Cedarhurst of Dyer. As Karen led a prayer for residents facing health challenges, she proposed an idea: why not bring companionship to fellow residents who might not be able to leave their rooms?

Karen recalls, “I asked the residents if they’d like to visit those who were bedridden or unable to attend activities, and they thought it was a wonderful idea.”

She introduced the concept at a Resident Council meeting, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Soon after, the Cedarhurst Angels were born, and their visits began to make a noticeable difference in the lives of residents across the community.

One of the first visits left a lasting impression on both the Angels and the family members of a bedridden resident. “We visited a resident who had family visiting, and we offered to come back,” Karen explains. “But the family invited us in. We sang together, prayed, and encouraged each other.

The family was moved to tears and expressed their gratitude to each one of us.”

As the group evolved, it became clear just how impactful these visits were. By fostering an environment of support, the Cedarhurst Angels helped residents forge stronger connections and find purpose in their new roles. “This group instills joy and a sense

of purpose,” says Karen. “They find they can still serve and make a difference in someone else’s life. It brings them closer to each other and develops friendships.”

For the Angels themselves, these moments have been profoundly rewarding. George Young, a devoted member, describes his reasons for joining: “I joined because it is God’s work to use our talents where we are. I live here and use what God gave me, to be of service to others.” Shirley Melvin, another active member, echoes this sentiment, saying, “No one wants to be alone. One person can’t do it all, you need others and other ideas.”

The Cedarhurst Angels bring joy to residents who might otherwise feel isolated or overlooked, brightening their days and showing that they are deeply valued members of the community. Jack VanProoyen, one of the group’s cherished members, recalls the joy he feels when visiting others: “When I see their face light up, it makes me feel good to know that we are making them feel good.”

In addition to providing companionship, the group also finds comfort and fulfillment through their time together. George reflects on his own experience, saying, “I’ve gone from total independence to living here with no family. Getting involved here has strengthened my faith and developed new friendships.” Shirley adds that being part of the Angels has helped her connect with

others on a deeper level: “It opens an unknown within yourself, as well.”

Even though many founding members are no longer with the group, their legacy of kindness endures as new members step in to continue their work. Karen is optimistic about the future of the Cedarhurst Angels and hopes it continues to grow. “I am hopeful that new residents will take an interest in the group. This group has the potential to enrich the happiness of residents and participants alike, build friendships, and develop a better sense of purpose,” she says.

Each week, as the Cedarhurst Angels make their visits, they leave an impact not only on those they visit but also on themselves. Through their acts of kindness, they find a renewed sense of purpose and belonging, while those they care for feel valued and supported. When asked what he would say to other residents considering joining, Jack offers simple but heartfelt advice: “If they’re thinking of joining, they would be blessed by it. They are blessed by seeing other people appreciate their visit and bringing friendship to them.”

George adds, “Give it a try; it might be something you find rewarding.”

In quiet acts of kindness, the Cedarhurst Angels remind us of the power to uplift and transform a community, where the spirit of caring extends to every corner of Cedarhurst of Dyer.

A Lifetime of

Innovation, Dedication and Family

At Cedarhurst of Frankfort, residents and staff are continually inspired by 89-year-old Jerry Spehar, a former IBM technician who spent decades at the forefront of technology, education, and service. Jerry’s remarkable career started with an unexpected twist when he joined the Army in 1957, where he learned about a revolutionary invention: the transistor. This training set Jerry on a path that would lead him to IBM, where he was part of a movement that shaped modern computing.

A CAREER BUILT ON INNOVATION

In July 1959, just five days before his wedding to Joan, Jerry began his career at IBM as a Large-Scale Computer-System Technician Specialist. Fresh from an intensive eight-week training program, he was assigned to work on the IBM 1400 series, which marked the beginning of the second generation of computers. Having been trained on the IBM 700/7000 series, he was well-prepared to support accounts transitioning from the older series to the innovative 1400 series, which introduced more compact and efficient transistor-based technology to handle industrial data processing needs for clients like U.S. Steel. “Dad was one of the first to work on computers when transistors replaced vacuum tubes,” recalls Jerry’s eldest daughter, Kristi Macek. “This was an enormous leap forward in technology. While he didn’t invent the transistor, he helped ensure that these new computers ran reliably.” Jerry’s technical expertise led to significant improvements in IBM’s systems, including a major redesign in U.S. Steel’s data collection system, which earned him five awards for innovation and precision.

CHAMPIONING LEARNING & GROWTH

Jerry’s technical skills propelled him to new roles over his 21-year career with IBM. From Technician Specialist, he moved into Field Engineering and then into teaching as an instructor. His deep knowledge and ability to break down complex concepts made him an exceptional mentor, earning him awards for excellence in instruction.

As an Instructor, Jerry empowered young technicians by ensuring they were fully equipped to handle IBM’s intricate systems. “He prided himself on the success of his students,” says Kristi. “He knew that every technician he taught would carry forward the responsibility of maintaining these massive, powerful computers.”

WITNESSING COMPUTING’S EVOLUTION

The 1960s and ’70s saw unprecedented changes in the computing industry, and Jerry was on the front lines as IBM transitioned from first-generation vacuum tube computers to second-generation transistor-based models, and eventually to systems with integrated circuits. He even trained on the revolutionary System/360, which introduced modular design and networking capabilities - a precursor to modern computing platforms.

Jerry loved to joke, “I keep telling everyone computers are just a fad; they’ll never catch on!” That lighthearted outlook softened the intensity of the rapid technological changes he witnessed. But in truth, he remained deeply committed to learning and adapting. By the time he completed IBM’s Experienced Manager Training Program in 1972, he was managing a team of 12 hardware specialists, supervising installations, and troubleshooting high-stakes issues on-site.

A LEGACY OF DEDICATION

Jerry’s commitment extended well beyond IBM. After leaving the company in 1980, he continued his career with the Digital Equipment Corporation and later worked as a consultant at Bell Atlantic. Even in retirement, he couldn’t resist the call of technology, taking a summer job in 2008 with Summit Hill

School District

161 in Frankfort, Illinois. There, he installed and serviced classroom computers—a role that allowed him to interact with teachers, many of whom were familiar with his grandchildren.

“It was funny to see how many teachers he knew,” Kristi shares. “My own kids’ teachers all knew him as the IT helper who went above and beyond. He had so much joy in supporting their work.”

A LIFE WELL-LIVED

Reflecting on her father’s career, Kristi notes how much IBM’s reputation for excellence influenced her perception of him. “Dad was the ‘computer guy’—and at a time when very few people knew what that even meant. His career at IBM let Mom be a stay-at-home parent, and I know she was so proud of him. That dedication left a lasting impression on all of us.”

Today, at Cedarhurst of Frankfort, Jerry’s journey continues to inspire those around him. His story reflects a pioneering spirit, a passion for learning, and a commitment to family and community. Through his work, he not only contributed to major technological advancements but also touched the lives of many, from his students and colleagues to his family. For those who meet him now, Jerry stands as a testament to the transformative power of dedication and curiosity, a legacy that continues to inspire everyone he encounters.

Celebrating 70 Years of Love

AT CEDARHURST SENIOR LIVING, TWO REMARKABLE COUPLES RECENTLY CELEBRATED A MILESTONE THAT ONLY ONE IN 1,000 MARRIED COUPLES EVER ACHIEVE - THEIR 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES. KNOWN AS THE “PLATINUM ANNIVERSARY,” THIS EXTRAORDINARY EVENT HIGHLIGHTS THE LOVE, DEVOTION, AND SHARED ADVENTURES THAT HAVE KEPT THESE COUPLES TOGETHER FOR SEVEN DECADES.

At Cedarhurst of Arnold, Leon and Dora May Pearce marked their 70th year of marriage, reflecting on a journey filled with joy, travel, and dancing. The pair first met on a blind date at a Long Island pub called “Boloney John’s” when Dora May was 19 and Leon was 23. After a whirlwind courtship, Leon proposed just two months later, and the couple wed in October 1954. Looking back, they attribute their lasting happiness to staying active together and cherishing every moment. One of their fondest memories is the birth of their children, Lee and Diana, and they’ve treasured their many travels around the world, from Europe to Japan. When asked for advice for younger couples, Dora May smiled and said, “Don’t go to bed angry. Say ‘I love you,’ and always kiss goodnight.” Leon’s advice was simple yet powerful: “Support each other in whatever you do.”

Meanwhile, at Cedarhurst of West Plains, Jerry and Shirley Jacques celebrated their own 70th anniversary, surrounded by over 50 close friends. Shirley recalled how their love blossomed after Jerry returned from the Air Force, noticing that his childhood friend’s little sister had “all grown up.” The couple’s Christian faith has been the cornerstone of their marriage, guiding them through life’s challenges.

One of their biggest adventures was overcoming Jerry’s fear of flying to enjoy a memorable trip to Hawaii - a journey made possible by Jerry’s work as a bank president. When reflecting on their fondest memories, the Jacques’ agreed that raising their children together was the highlight of their life. Shirley’s advice for younger couples? “Go to church together and be kind to others.”

These love stories illustrate the beauty of lasting commitment, proving that with love and devotion, a lifetime together can be filled with joy, adventure, and deep connection.
