THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF EMERSON “BUD” SHULTZ

n the hushed cadence of memory, the clarinet whispers its tale, a story of beginnings wrapped in parental hopes and childhood dreams.

For Emerson “Bud” Shultz, the journey into the heart of music began with a gift from his parents and a clarinet procured from the local pawn shop. Now, at the age of 89, with a symphony of experiences behind him, Bud’s life remains a testament to the enduring power of melody and harmony.

From the vibrant pinnacle of his youth to the sweet-sounding serenade of his golden years, Bud’s life has been a symphony in motion, each movement

punctuated by notes of passion and dedication. With a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Illinois and a master’s in education administration and industrial management from Purdue University, Bud cultivated not only his musical prowess but also a deep understanding of the transformative power of education.

As the principal clarinetist for the Alton Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1981, Bud’s clarion call echoed through concert halls, his every note a brushstroke on the canvas of musical history. Yet, it was not only in the grandeur of orchestral performance that Bud found

his purpose. As the founder of the first concert band at Lewis and Clark Community College in 1978 and an adjunct faculty member to this day, Bud has dedicated himself to nurturing the talents of future generations, sowing the seeds of inspiration in fertile minds.

Through the Wings and Strings Music Shop, which he co-owned with his beloved wife Gail from 1995 to 2004, Bud fostered a community of musicians, a haven where melody met camaraderie and passion flourished. Together, they orchestrated a harmony of business and pleasure, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who crossed their threshold.

Despite the allure of the spotlight, Bud’s devotion to family remained steady. When Johnny Mathis extended an invitation to join his band and traverse the winding roads of fame, Bud declined, choosing instead the quiet rhythm of domestic bliss. For nearly 68 years, Bud and Gail have danced to the melody of love, their union a testament to the enduring power of companionship.

In the twilight of his illustrious career, Bud

finds solace and joy in the embrace of the New Horizon Band, a testament to his commitment to the transformative power of music. As the oldest member of the ensemble, Bud’s clarinet weaves a tapestry of memories, each note a bridge to the past and a prelude to the future.

For Bud, music is not merely a vocation but a lifeline, a melody that resonates with the rhythm of the human spirit. Through his performances with the New Horizon Band, Bud has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of music in the lives of seniors at Cedarhurst of Godfrey. As notes hang in the air like a spell, he watches as residents, once lost in the labyrinth of age, find their way back to themselves, their faces aglow with the light of memory reclaimed.

With each performance, Bud imparts a simple yet profound message to aspiring musicians of all ages: “Just go for it.” In a world fraught with doubt and uncertainty, music offers sanctuary, a refuge where passion knows no bounds and creativity reigns supreme. Whether young or old, novice or virtuoso, Bud’s life serves as a testament to the enduring power of music to uplift, inspire, and unite.

As the final notes of Bud’s symphony echo, one cannot help but marvel at the richness of his legacy, a legacy woven from threads of melody and harmony, of love and dedication. In the annals of musical history, Bud’s name shall endure as a beacon of light, guiding future generations on their own journey into the heart and passion of music.

Finding Joy Through

TANAZ BAMBOAT’S JOURNEY WITH LAUGHTER YOGA

Story Idea Submitted by Nallely Tinoco

Cedarhurst of Naperville, Life Enrichment Director

In a world where challenges often weigh heavily on our shoulders, Tanaz Bamboat, a resident of Cedarhurst of Naperville, stands as a beacon of light, spreading joy and positivity through the transformative power of laughter. Her journey, marked by resilience and a commitment to service, serves as an inspiration to all who encounter her spirit.

Born out of personal struggle, Tanaz’s path to discovering Laughter Yoga was paved with the shadows of depression and the relentless grip of bipolar disorder. “1998 was a hard time in my life; I couldn’t laugh,” she reflects. Yet, within the depths of her despair, she found a lifeline in an unexpected place – an article about Laughter Yoga.

Embracing this unconventional approach, Tanaz embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Despite initial skepticism, she pursued certification and began leading Laughter Yoga sessions in her community. “I still couldn’t laugh during laughter yoga,” she recalls, “but the benefits were undeniable.” Guided by the teachings of Dr. Madan Kataria and fueled by a desire to alleviate suffering, Tanaz’s laughter became a catalyst for transformation, both within herself and those around her.

Laughter Yoga, as Tanaz passionately explains, is not merely an exercise; it is a gateway to profound emotional and physical well-being. Through intentional laughter, participants tap into an infinite reservoir of joy, reaping the scientifically proven benefits of elevated endorphin levels and reduced stress. “Our body does not know the difference between fake laughter and real laughter,” she explains, “and the results are tangible.”

For Tanaz, the impact of Laughter Yoga extends far beyond personal wellness. It has become a mission – a calling to spread awareness and destigmatize mental health struggles. Through her work at Cedarhurst of Naperville and within her Hindu temple community, she strives to make laughter accessible to all, offering free Zoom sessions and certification opportunities for aspiring laughter leaders.

In the face of bipolar disorder, Tanaz finds solace in laughter’s embrace. “Laughter yoga has given me a purpose to help others,” she shares. “It has brought me out of depression, and I want to share that with people.” With each session, she witnesses the transformative power of laughter, breaking through barriers of isolation and despair.

Reflecting on her journey, Tanaz recalls moments of profound impact – from heartfelt thanks from session participants to personal revelations of newfound joy.

No matter what you are going through, laugh for the health of it. People should be happy all the time.

Despite ongoing challenges and the persistence of medication, laughter has become her constant companion, illuminating a path of hope and resilience.

Tanaz’s dedication has not gone unnoticed, as she has been featured in various media outlets, including Chicago Channel 9, WCIU, and multiple radio stations. Yet, for her, the greatest reward lies in the smiles and laughter of those she serves – a testament to the enduring power of joy in the face of adversity.

As we navigate life’s ups and downs, Tanaz Bamboat’s story reminds us that amidst the darkness, laughter remains a beacon of light, guiding us towards healing, connection, and flourishing. In her words, “No matter what you are going through, laugh for the health of it. People should be happy all the time.”

For those interested in joining Tanaz on her laughter-filled journey, she welcomes visitors to explore her website, LaughterYoga4U.com where they can find resources, schedule sessions, and learn more about the transformative practice of Laughter Yoga. Through this platform, Tanaz continues to extend the reach of her mission, inviting individuals from all walks of life to experience the boundless joy and healing power of laughter.

& A Life of Passion Perseverance

In the bustling town of Hoopeston, Illinois, on a crisp February day in 1919, Gladys Williamson came into the world, heralding the beginning of a remarkable journey filled with adventure, achievement, and an unyielding passion for life. Today, as she resides in the warm embrace of Cedarhurst of Beaumont’s community, Gladys’ vibrant spirit continues to inspire all who have the privilege of crossing paths with her.

Gladys’ life story reads like a tapestry woven with threads of resilience and determination. A devoted mother to four children, cherished grandmother to nine, great-grandmother to ten, and great-greatgrandmother to four, she epitomizes the essence of family values and the joys of generational bonds. Her zest for exploration led Gladys and her beloved family on countless adventures across the globe, traversing all 50 states, venturing into the heart of Canada, embarking on a legendary road trip to Alaska, and exploring

the diverse landscapes of Central America, Asia, and Europe. Alongside her husband, she embraced the world with open arms, fostering a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and the wonders of the unknown.

Gladys’ thirst for knowledge propelled her to academic heights, earning both a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in Geography from Illinois State University—an extraordinary feat for a woman of her time. Her intellectual curiosity knew no bounds, reflected in her avid pursuit of learning and her appetite for literary endeavors.

“Very few women had college degrees in 1941,” reflects her daughter Martha, underscoring Gladys’ trailblazing spirit as she shattered societal norms and paved the way for future generations of women. As the office manager for her husband’s engineering business, Gladys’ leadership and energy propelled their ventures to new heights, leaving a mark on the world of business and beyond.

Despite her initial reluctance, Gladys’ journey into the realm of swimming exemplifies her unshakable spirit and unwavering resolve. While her family immersed themselves in swimming competitions, she stood on the sidelines, a steadfast supporter and nurturer of their ambitions. It wasn’t until her senior

years that Gladys decided to take the plunge herself, defying expectations and embarking on a remarkable odyssey in the world of competitive swimming.

Her dedication and commitment to excellence serve as a testament to her tenacity and her pursuit of excellence. “She started swimming in the senior games, and by the time she was in her 90s, she started setting national records,” said her son Wally. “At one point, she held six national records. She still has two even though she hasn’t been swimming for a half a dozen years.”

But perhaps, beyond her myriad accomplishments, it is Gladys’ radiant smile and her unwavering faith that truly define her essence. Rooted in a deep spirituality and a boundless love for humanity, Gladys radiates warmth, passion and compassion, touching the lives of all who have the privilege of knowing her.

As Gladys sits surrounded by loved ones, enveloped in an aura of serenity and grace, one cannot help but marvel at the extraordinary tapestry of her life—a life marked by love, laughter, and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. In her, we find not only a source of inspiration but a beacon of hope—a reminder that no dream is too grand, no obstacle too daunting, and that with passion, positivity and perseverance, anything is possible.

She started swimming in the senior games, and by the time she was in her 90s, she started setting national records.

JoyCapturing Moments of

CEDAR CREEK OF WARSAW’S HEARTWARMING COLLABORATION WITH PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE

In the tranquil embrace of Cedar Creek of Warsaw resides a unique fusion of art and empathy, fostering positive connections and uplifting spirits. Within its corridors, the walls are adorned not only with memories but with visions of hope and happiness, courtesy of a collaborative project with Purdue University Fort Wayne's talented students. This innovative partnership has not only decorated the community with striking imagery but has also woven threads of connection and belonging among its residents, enhancing their sense of identity and well-being.

At the helm of this creative endeavor is Jim

Gabbard, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art and Design at Purdue University Fort Wayne. With a rich background in photography and a passion for fine art, Jim spearheaded this initiative, offering students a platform to channel their creativity while making a meaningful impact in their community. Reflecting on the project's significance, Jim shares, "From a professional standpoint, it helps in giving the students an understanding of how their photos might be used and in what context. It also teaches them how to work in creating photos for different people."

The collaboration unfolds as students embark on a journey to capture the essence of life through their

22 CEDARHURST SENIOR LIVING | SPRING FLOURISH 2024

lenses. From pastoral landscapes to intimate portraits, each image is infused with intention, designed to evoke emotions and spark memories. Madison Foreman, a student involved in the project, shares her motivation: "If I can offer help to those who suffer from dementia and their families, I want to do whatever I can."

For the residents, these photographs transcend mere decor; they serve as windows to the past, catalysts for conversation, and sources of comfort. Evie Moore, Life Enrichment Director at Cedar Creek of Warsaw, observes firsthand the profound impact of these visual cues, noting, "Every time they saw the tractor photo hanging by the door, they knew where they were and became comfortable with where they were."

beyond the confines of a single community, envisioning a network of collaborations that span across the region.

"We would love to see this expanded to other Cedarhurst Senior Living communities and continue to broaden the number of people who might benefit from the photos," he shares.

For Evie, the focus remains on ensuring that every resident finds a piece of themselves in the photographs that grace the halls of Cedar Creek of Warsaw. "My goal is to have a photo for every resident," she expresses with determination, "to match each resident to a photo that will bring them joy and remind them of who they are."

As Cedar Creek of Warsaw continues to weave stories through images and foster positive connections through art, it stands as a beacon of compassion and creativity—a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and community. Through the lens of shared experiences and shared moments, Cedar Creek of Warsaw's residents find solace, joy, and a sense of belonging, one photograph at a time. My goal is to have a photo for every resident and match each resident to a photo that will bring them joy and remind them of who they are.

Indeed, the photos adorning the walls of Cedar Creek are more than just embellishments—they are vessels of joy, carrying with them positive memories of yesteryears and dreams for tomorrow. Evie recounts instances where residents' moods were lifted, and spirits rejuvenated by the sight of familiar scenes captured in photographs. "You can truly see that these photos, when chosen properly, brighten the moods of those they are chosen for," she remarks with a smile.

Beyond aesthetics, the incorporation of these visual cues into the community environment serves a deeper purpose. In a world often fraught with uncertainty, familiarity breeds comfort, and familiarity is precisely what these photographs offer. "Visual clues make the areas around them feel more homely," explains Moore. "This brings people comfort and lets them be at ease."

Looking ahead, both Jim and Evie envision a future where this collaboration continues to flourish, enriching the lives of more individuals within and beyond Cedar Creek's walls. Jim's aspirations extend
