CHESHIRE COLLEGE STRENGTHENS INTERNATIONAL TIES WITH SCHOOL IN CHINA FOR VIRTUAL CULTURAL PROGRAMME

Cheshire College – South & West has further strengthened its international connections by collaborating once again with Chongqing No.7 Secondary School, a highly regarded educational institution in China. This partnership delivered an enriching virtual cultural programme, offering students and staff an immersive experience in traditional Chinese arts and customs.

Through six interactive sessions hosted via Microsoft Teams, participants explored key aspects of Chinese culture, including paper cutting, traditional etiquette, and calligraphy. These live-streamed sessions were accessible in Cheshire College’s Learning Resource Centres and also made available for classroom use, ensuring a broad and engaging reach across the College community.

Reflecting on the success of the programme, Joanne Stewart, Participation and Learning Resource Manager at Cheshire College, said: “ The initiative has provided our students with a fantastic opportunity to connect with a different culture in an engaging and meaningful way. Seeing their enthusiasm for learning about Chinese traditions has been inspiring, and it reinforces the importance of global collaboration in education.”

The relationship between Cheshire College and Chongqing No.7 Secondary School dates back to 2019 when

students and staff from China visited the College. Following the success of that visit, both institutions maintained close contact, leading to the creation of this virtual exchange programme.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, emphasised the importance of digital collaboration in education, stating: “ Leveraging digital platforms for international collaboration enables us to bring rich cultural experiences directly to our students.

This programme demonstrates how technology can bridge global connections, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Chongqing No.7 Secondary School.” Participants at Cheshire College have shared positive feedback, describing the programme as enlightening and inspiring. Many students have expressed a newfound interest in Chinese arts and traditions, highlighting the impact of such crosscultural initiatives.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR VETERANS IN ‘MARCH

IN MARCH’ CHARITY CHALLENGE

Throughout the month of March, Uniformed Protective Services students from Cheshire College’s Crewe Campus took on the ‘March in March’ challenge to support the mental health of veterans.

As part of a national initiative for Combat Stress, the students committed to walking, running, or marching 10 miles to raise funds and awareness for former servicemen and women battling mental health conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

The month-long challenge culminated in a powerful conclusion on March 26, where students gathered with veterans, special guests, and the Cheshire College community to reflect on the campaign’s impact and the importance of supporting veterans’ mental health.

The morning kicked off with the arrival of key attendees, including Richard Stevenson-Evans, Armed Forces Lead for Cheshire East Council, as well as Staffordshire and Cheshire veterans.

The event featured a symbolic march led by the students and a presentation where they shared what they had learned and the reasons behind their involvement in the campaign.

Their reflections highlighted the importance of supporting veterans and the life-changing impact of Combat Stress services. Guests had the

opportunity to engage with students during a networking session, learning more about their experiences and the importance of mental health support for veterans.

Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal for Innovation, Curriculum and Quality, shared her admiration for the students’ dedication, saying, “ The dedication and compassion demonstrated by our students in support of this vital cause has been truly inspiring. Their engagement in both the physical challenge and the thoughtful presentation to veterans reflects their deep commitment to understanding and addressing the issues our servicemen and women face.”

She added, “It’s incredibly uplifting to witness the profound impact that such initiatives have, not only on the students but also on the veterans they are helping.”

Craig Halliwell, Assistant Director of Uniformed Protective Services, Sport, ESOL and Travel & Tourism commended the students, commented “ I am immensely proud of our students for their dedication to such a significant cause. Their

efforts to raise awareness and funds for veterans’ mental health are truly commendable.”

The funds raised throughout March will go toward providing life-saving services for veterans, including funding helpline calls, occupational therapy

sessions, and psychiatric appointments. The ‘March in March’ challenge has proven to be more than just a physical event for the students—it’s a testament to the spirit of the Cheshire College community and the support for those who have served.

Cheshire College – South & West is proud to announce that Emiley Scott, a Level 5 Creative Media Production student, has been selected to join WorldSkills UK’s prestigious 18-month intensive training programme. This marks the beginning of an exciting

journey for Emiley as she works toward earning a place on the team that will represent the UK at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition.

WorldSkills is a global event held in collaboration with Pearson. It brings together young talent from over 80 countries, celebrating excellence across a wide range of disciplines, from engineering and manufacturing to creative and digital industries.

Emiley's selection for the training programme follows her success in national skills competitions, and she will now work with experts and fellow trainees to develop her skills in the 3D Digital Game Art category. This intense training period is designed to give her the best possible chance to secure a spot on the UK squad competing in Shanghai.

The competition in Shanghai

is expected to feature over 1,500 competitors and attract an audience of more than 250,000, offering a unique opportunity for participants to showcase their skills on the global stage.

The WorldSkills competition is renowned for its role in shaping the future of skilled workforces in vital sectors. It is attended by leading government representatives, industry experts, and educationalists, and is considered a crucial event in assessing a nation’s skills excellence.

Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College – South & West, said:

“ Emiley’s achievement is a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication we foster at Cheshire College. We are incredibly proud of her and fully committed to supporting her as she prepares to represent the

UK on the global stage at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.”

Paul Browne, Assistant Principal for Curriculum at Cheshire College, has also been selected as Training Manager for 3D Digital Game Art. He commented,

“ Emiley's dedication and skill in Creative Media Production have truly set her apart. The training she will receive over the next 18 months will equip her with the expertise and confidence needed to excel on the global stage, and we have no doubt she will make Cheshire College proud.”

Ben Blackledge, Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, congratulated Emiley on her selection, saying:

“ Along with other members of the programme, Emiley will be developing the right skills to fuel business growth across our economy. With WorldSkills being hosted in

Shanghai next year, it provides a fantastic platform for us to work closely with China, where we know skills excellence is a priority, to collaborate, innovate and learn from the very best in the world.”

Freya Thomas Monk, Managing Director of Pearson Qualifications said: “ Pearson is proud to sponsor Team UK. Boosting the profile and prestige of technical and vocational education is incredibly important to us and I wish this talented group of 86 young people from across the country the best of luck as they begin their training programme towards competing in Shanghai.”

Emiley is set to embark on an incredible journey, honing her skills and representing the very best of UK talent. Her selection highlights the College's commitment to developing excellence in creative and technical skills.

Cheshire College - South & West is proud to celebrate Andrew Joseph Manion, a highly experienced hairstylist, entrepreneur, and valued member of the College’s Hairdressing and Barbering team. His journey—from salon owner to award finalist—has shaped him into an inspiring mentor who continues to share his passion and industry insights with students.

Earlier this year, Andrew’s talent was recognised on a national level when he was named a finalist at the 2025 UK Hair and Beauty Awards. This incredible achievement placed him among the top hair professionals in the country.

Andrew’s journey into hairdressing began at the age of 17. From working in local salons and travelling to France to hone his craft, to eventually launching AJM Hair in South Liverpool, Andrew’s passion for the industry was evident from day one.

Andrew said, “ I was running the salon while attending university for four years, studying my foundation in make-up design and practice.”

His salon quickly became a community staple, with a loyal clientele

and a growing team of stylists. However, like many business owners, the pandemic posed significant challenges, forcing it to close.

Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal of Innovation, Curriculum, and Quality at Cheshire College, commented:

“ We are incredibly fortunate to have someone with Andrew’s vast

experience and dedication as part of our team.”

“His ability to seamlessly blend technical expertise with real-world knowledge enriches our students’ learning and equips them with the skills they need to succeed in the evolving beauty industry.”

Andrew added, “ I went on to my postgraduate in education, and since the salon closed, I continued to do my master’s in education, which took me to seven years in university.”

“I had so many plans, but Covid stopped everything. It made me evaluate what was important. Running a business is very stressful, and it took my life in a different direction.”

Now, Andrew splits his time between hands-on styling at Browns Hair & Beauty and lecturing three days a week at Cheshire College. Through his teaching, he’s mentoring hundreds of students, equipping them with both technical expertise and invaluable realworld insight. He says,

“ I get to do the work I love, without the pressures of running a business—and most importantly, I get to help others find their way in this industry. Teaching has helped me grow just as much as styling ever did.”

CHESHIRE COLLEGE ACADEMY RESTAURANTS LEAD THE WAY IN SUSTAINABLE HOSPITALITY

Cheshire College’s Academy Restaurants are at the forefront of sustainable hospitality education, integrating eco-friendly practices across every aspect of their operations. As part of the Hospitality and Catering department’s vision, Academy West is committed to shaping the future of the industry by equipping students with the skills and knowledge to drive the sector towards a greener, more responsible future.

Hospitality and Catering students at the College create fine dining dishes using locally sourced produce from

Cheshire and the Wirral. The restaurant prioritises ethically sourced ingredients, including British meats from regional farms, sustainably caught seafood from UK coastal waters, and fresh Britishgrown vegetables.

These efforts ensure top-quality, fresh ingredients while supporting sustainable supply chains. Academy West’s zero-food waste policy further minimises waste and promotes responsible disposal practices.

Beyond food sourcing, the restaurant has switched to eco-friendly cleaning products, significantly reduced

single-use plastics, and encouraged suppliers to minimise packaging— driving positive change across the supply chain.

As part of their sustainability education, students recently visited a Welsh hillside farm to gain firsthand insight into sustainable food production. This immersive experience helped deepen their understanding of responsible sourcing and highlighted the importance of collaborating with local farmers and suppliers.

The department is also strengthening its commitment to sustainability by growing fresh herbs on-site, with plans to expand into a full-scale kitchen garden. This initiative ensures the use of the finest quality ingredients and provides students with invaluable, hands-on learning opportunities to enhance their understanding of sustainable food production practices.

Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal for Innovation, Curriculum and Quality commented:

“ Sustainability is a core value that we embed across all areas of learning. The Academy’s commitment to eco-conscious practices ensures that our students leave with the skills and knowledge needed to drive positive change in the hospitality industry.”

Adam Gaunt-Evans, Lecturer in Catering and Hospitality at Academy West emphasises the broader impact of these initiatives:

“ Sustainability in hospitality is more than just a trend—it’s a necessity. By integrating sustainable practices into our teaching from day one, we are preparing students to lead the industry with responsibility and innovation. Our goal is to inspire them to make environmentally conscious decisions throughout their careers.”

As Cheshire College continues to expand its sustainability initiatives, it remains dedicated to developing forward-thinking professionals who will drive the sector towards a more responsible and ethical future.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE AND BELONG VILLAGES UNITE TO TRANSFORM DEMENTIA CARE EDUCATION

Cheshire College – South & West is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Belong, a pioneering not-for-profit organisation redefining dementia care. The collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing education and career opportunities in the health and social care sector.

Belong has been at the forefront of innovative dementia care, integrating services, housing, and community within their award-winning Belong villages.

The partnership journey began in 2024, with an initial visit to Belong Chester Village, where discussions focused on exploring collaboration opportunities. This was followed by a site visit to the College’s Crewe campus in July to further shape the partnership and identify areas for mutual development.

In August, the two organisations began refining tailored learning programmes, setting the stage for the integration of specialised training solutions designed to meet the evolving needs of the health and social care sector.

January 2025 marked a key milestone: the development of a new training space at the Crewe campus, designed to replicate Belong’s household care settings. The space will provide students with hands-on training in a realistic care setting, allowing them to experience firsthand the high standards of care that Belong is known for.

By mirroring the layout and functionality of a real Belong household, students will develop practical skills and a deep understanding of best practices in person-centred care before entering the workforce.

This collaboration will provide students with invaluable hands-on experience in dementia care, bridging the gap between education and employment.

Through work experience at Belong villages, apprenticeships, and T-Level placements, students will gain practical insight into industry best practices

while developing essential skills.

Tailored learning courses will be designed to align with sector demands, improving employability, while additional initiatives such as guest speaker sessions, curriculum enrichment, and digital projects will further enhance the student learning experience.

Helen Nellist Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating: “ This represents a remarkable opportunity for students to engage with industry-leading dementia care models, develop essential skills, and contribute meaningfully to the care sector.”

“By working with Belong, we are shaping the future of healthcare education and ensuring our students are workforce ready.”

Brendan Conlon, Learning and Development Manager at Belong Villages, echoed this enthusiasm:

“ This partnership is an exciting opportunity to bridge the gap between education and industry. By working closely with Cheshire College, we can create a pipeline of skilled professionals who are equipped to provide the highest standard of care.”

As the partnership progresses, both organisations remain committed to continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring students receive the best possible education while making a real difference in the lives of those living with dementia.
