GETNS Newsletter –

7th February 2013

Dear Parents / Guardians

Parent participation has always been one of the main features of Activity Week. The children love to see their parents demonstrating skills or knowledge and working alongside the teachers. All the studies tell us of the benefits of parents getting actively involved with schools and children’s education. The whole reason Activity Week began (way back in 1996 when I joined the school) was because parents wanted this hands on involvement. Over the last few years parent participation has been falling off. This is a shame and we would love to see the trend reversed. Please contact your child’s teacher if you can spare an hour or so next week to share a skill, do an activity or assist with what is already organised. We would also appreciate hearing your own views on Activity Week and how it might continue to be run. Email us at admin@getns.ie or principalgetns@gmail.com .

Teaching and Learning Survey The feedback from the survey sent out recently on aspects of teaching and learning in the school has been collated. We would like to thank the 192 families (74%) that took the time to reply. Overall parents were very satisfied with the school and the teaching of literacy and numeracy. We will give you more information about this on the website over the coming weeks.

Parent Association News - We raised over €1000 at the Winter Fair in December. Thanks to all who came and made this our best year ever!! - We are currently organizing our new committee. We need a parent representative from each class to come to meetings. New ideas from new people will be more than welcome! If you’re enthusiastic and interested in joining this committee, which represents your child’s and the school’s interests, please contact Jayme on 0872039971. - Our next meeting is on Tuesday, Feb 19th, at 9am in the Parent’s Room/Kitchen. We will be discussing how best to spend the money raised as well as a possible programme of PA events for the spring/summer. Those events are dependant on your involvement! Please come and support your child’s school.

Wristband Fundraising You will find a leaflet about ID wristbands in the school bag today. We have been approached by the company to run a Pilot project and offer you to purchase the wristbands at a discounted price (€3 saving) while giving back 25% of the money to the school as a way of fundraising. Be it in the supermarket, the beach, at a festival or in any crowded environment, it is always worrying to lose track of your child. The wristband offers a great solution by having all vital information attached to your child. This offer is not limited to our school children only, so talk about it to your family and friends and help us fundraise as much as we can for GETNS.
