Croeso cynnes iawn i 4edd flwyddyn Taith Gelf Ceredigion. Mae gennym dros 150 o arlunwyr a gwneuthurwyr yn cymryd rhan o 22 i 31 Awst yn 2015. Mae llawer yn dangos eu gwaith yn eu stiwdios eu hunain ac mae pobl eraill yn arddangos mewn arddangosfeydd grŵp o gwmpas y sir a’r gororau. Cynigia’r Daith gyfle i bawb gwrdd â’r arlunwyr a’r gwneuthurwyr, er mwyn dysgu o lygad y ffynnon am eu gwaith a’u technegau, ac i brynu’n uniongyrchol wrth yr arlunydd. Rhestrir yr arlunwyr a’r gwneuthurwyr yn ddaearyddol o’r gogledd i’r de, felly chwiliwch drwy’r mapiau a’r cyfeiriadur arlunwyr er mwyn cynllunio’ch llwybr eich hun trwy gefn gwlad digyffwrdd Ceredigion a’r gororau. Mae’r diwrnodau a’r oriau agor yn amrywio, felly edrychwch ar y calendr ar ddiwedd y Canllaw wrth gynllunio’ch teithiau. A very warm welcome to the 4th year of the Ceredigion Art Trail. For 2015 we have over 150 artists and makers taking part from August 22nd to 31st. Many are showing their work in their own studios and others are exhibiting in group exhibitions around the county and borders. The Trail offers everyone the opportunity to meet the artists and makers, to learn firsthand about their work and techniques, and to buy direct from the artist. The artists and makers are listed geographically from north to south so please look through the maps and artists directory to plan your own route through the unspoiled countryside of Ceredigion and borders. Opening days and times vary, so check the calendar at the end of the Guide when planning your trips. Along the way you will find recommended local places of interest and refreshment. Most artists will be happy to also see visitors by appointment outside of the Trail period, so please keep this book as a Directory of Ceredigion Artists and Makers for reference all year round. A summary calendar is provided at the back of the book for your ‘at a glance’ reference. Our website may provide more detailed directions to the studios. A few artists are not opening their studios for the Trail, though listed in the guide, their pages have no calendar.

Sue Colbeck’s acrylic and charcoal paintings are inspired by her photography. Rod Watkins paints in watercolour or acrylics. Lately he has been involved in paintings semi-abstract animals. Gill Watkins love of nature and wildlife is reflected in her pastel paintings. Jane Burnham’s interest is in painting people, especially those she has encountered on her travels. She also paints still lives in oils. Directions: Siop Cynfelyn is in the village of Tre’rddol, on the A487, halfway between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. There is ample parking. Also on bus route T2 and X28.

Siop Cynfelyn is a community project run partly by volunteers and serves as a social hub for the village. The shop sells local Welsh produce and the cafe serves excellent home-made food and a variety of teas, coffees and cakes.

Phil Jones is an award winning photographer and author of The Ceredigion Coastal Path (Gomer Press). He has a fascination with both the annual starling murmuration in Aberystwyth and the submerged forest at Borth with the associated legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod. Sarah Jones works in multiple media and is inspired by the local landscape, textures and natural world. She usually has a sketchbook and pen with her so that she can capture on paper the things which fascinate her. Sarah and Phil held their first successful joint exhibition at Oriel Tir a Mor Gallery and are delighted to be exhibiting there again. Directions: Oriel Tir a Mor is a cafe/gallery located along Borth High Street. It is one of the last shops on the right hand side when approaching from the south.
Oriel Tir a Mor Gallery serves excellent food, drink and ice-cream. Upstairs coffee lounge with views of Plynlimon, Cors Fochno and The Cambrian Mountain Range.

Our work is inspired by the environment we work in whilst crewing Aberystwyth Lifeboat. Aberystwyth Harbour, the prom, and the sea all feature. Cardigan Bay is an area rich in superb wildlife, varied boats, stunning views and interesting characters which are reflected in our ceramics, acrylics, and natural driftwood pieces.

We are an Aberystwyth based artist collective comprising printers, writers, film makers, textile artists, conceptual artists, seamstresses, poets, illustrators and storytellers. Our aim is to work with the local community on a range of creative projects and work together to explore and present new ways of expressing ourselves. We welcome interest from other groups or individuals and we enjoy presenting workshops and events so hopefully we’ll see you soon. Directions: The side of Portland Road furthest from the sea (the right hand side when facing north) there are about three little alleyways just next to a Chinese restaurant Honoured Guest. Our alleyway is the first to the right of the restaurant and we are down the end on the left.

Painting Peintio We share a passion for paint and a commitment to abstraction. Our work deals with process, pushing the boundaries of painting, challenging ourselves intellectually and physically. As graduates of Aberystwyth we want to bring abstraction back into the public eye of the town. We aim to remove the mystique that clouds art practice whilst exploring the potential of corporeal substance.

My practice is of an existential nature; painting allows me to purge myself to get down to the purest form of visual impressions. In my eyes our emotions are one of the most abstract parts of us. My paintings are the result of subsequent layered surfaces of these emotions and life experiences, where sometimes marks and scratches shine through.

The direction of her work is versatile and dynamic; recent work has consisted of exploring, exaggerating and recreating shapes as a direct response to the Aberystwyth landscape. Embracing the frustrations and eureka moments she reacts to the physicality of paint, balancing emotive spontaneity with an academic response.

I am a landscape artist painting local scenes in soft pastels. I first used pastels three years ago and it is now my preferred medium for painting. I get my inspiration from the countryside and particularly enjoy painting water scenes.

The next house is a white stone cottage set lower than the road. This is Glasfryn. If you continue past the house and past the stone barn you will come to the driveway which will take you down to my studio.

Flowing/churning water, swirling mists or clouds, fiery skies or flames, solid rock formations, all these elements interacting fascinate me. My need to create movement and drama using expressive colour is evident in all my work whether vast cosmic expanses, seascapes, landscapes or portraiture.

I paint, in a particular way with watercolours and PVA. I am continually experimenting with a resist technique on paper, fabrics and sometimes on a built up canvas with Plaster of Paris or linen.

I specialise in distinctly British Birds and their character traits and behaviours. For instance, hand-cast tiny pewter birds standing on wooden blocks carrying their thoughts and feelings with them, or mixed-media three-dimensional scenes describing the behaviour of our common garden birds worked inside the pages of vintage books. My work comes from a need to cram a story into the smallest space possible, and an enduring love of the way birds live with us and yet inhabit a completely different world.

Abstract and semi-abstract oil paintings and mixed-media drawings. I work slowly: using oils in thin layers; often drawing onto the canvas as part of the process, using repeated marks and layers to evoke a sense of quietness and reverie.

The glass sits quietly calling. I stand at the bench... on my right the glass cutter, tweezers, spoons. On my left assorted powders, enamels, feathers, silver leaf. I pick up my cutter, take a breath and make the first scratch.

Peter Bodenham has recently established St. Dogmaels Pottery. He makes slip-decorated functional pottery that combines traditional materials and techniques with contemporary methods and influences. The abstract marks and colours on his pots suggest the West Wales seascapes and landscapes.

My abstract paintings and prints convey my thoughts and personal attachment to the landscape. I build up layers and colours and try to depict the elemental in nature.

My unique paintings are created in batik using hot liquid wax-resist and dyes. Inspired by walking in the surrounding countryside, nearby Wales coast path, beaches and Preseli Hills. My artist studio exhibits batik paintings, prints, cards and work in progress.
