THE North Queensland Zone officially announced Mark Rowe from Mission Beach Outrigger Canoe Club as the winner of the NQ Sportsman Award for 2021.

Every club votes on the sportsmanship award, not the Zone committee, making it the fairest and most fitting recipient to receive this achievement each year.

The sportsmanship award aims to recognise those who are active participants in the sport, display good behaviour, good spirit, and assist the sport to function.

These are the people we want to model ourselves on and aspire to be, which makes it the highest standing award.

All previous winners have been outstanding examples of what the sport is and how it continues.

Rowe has again lifted this standard and had a massive influence on our sport in the north for the last few years.

His positive contribution to the outrigging community sets a shining example, appreciated by all who have paddled or associated with Rowe.

NQ Zone President Darrell Thoroughgood has witnessed firsthand the happy nature and encouraging attitude Rowe has displayed in the sport.

“He has put in massive hours in helping others and assisting in setting things up so others can participate and enjoy the sport.”

“Mark also made the extra effort to get themselves on the water to compete, which is exactly what this award is all about.”

Rowe, the North Queensland Zone Junior Coordinator, is a worthy and fitting recipient of this award and has raised the standard to an even higher level.

Mission Beach Club capped off a successful regatta season with North Queensland Zone Awards.

From the second event, Mission Beach dominated and finished strongly to claim the title of Champion Men’s Club.

The club also won four awards in the Grand Prix Regatta season, taking out Champion OC1/OC2 Senior Club, Champion Junior OC6 Club, Champion Junior OC1/OC2 Club and Champion Per Capita Club.

Three clubs held the lead in the Mixed Club division until Coral Sea claimed the title, whilst Mission Beach finished closely in third place.

Mark’s son, Flynn, received the Youth Paddler of the Year Award. Flynn, who started as a Junior, now leads Mission Beach Outrigger Club’s Junior Development Rates for the period 1 January 2022 to 30 June 2022 were issued on Tuesday, 25 January 2022.

Innisfail and District Historical Society looks forward to a busy 2022

MARIA GIRGENTI MEMBERS and volunteers from the Innisfail and District Historical Society are looking ahead to a busy and productive 2022.

In six weeks, the Society sold out their 2022 historical calendars with 100 printed.

This year’s calendar, compiled by Yvonne Smith, Val Robertson and Connie Symons, highlights the ‘The Mosquito Fleet,’ the sugar lighter boats that went up and down the Johnstone River en-route to the Goondi Mill.

A print run of more 2022 calendars may occur if there is sufficient interest from the community.

Despite a tough couple of years, members in 2021 special mention to all the volunteers for their efforts and the ongoing support of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

Throughout 2021, volunteers Gloria Ballington, Lorraine Johns and Thelma Galvin put in a tremendous effort with various window displays at the museum.

These window displays focused on significant events, including Australia Day, Feast of the Senses, ANZAC Day, Art Deco Festival, Vietnam Veteran’s Day and Christmas.

Volunteers assisted at the Art Deco Vintage Markets held at the Shire Hall, had a stall at last year’s 106th Innisfail and District Show, whilst Flying Fish Point State School students visited the museum.

A special morning tea took place and a room at the Innisfail and District Historical Society Museum, named in honour of stalwart Val Robertson for over 40 dedicated years of service, whilst Herb Last received Life membership.

In 2021, IDHS launched a new publication titled ‘Some of the Early Industries of Geraldton/Innisfail’ with limited copies available for $10 at the museum.

One of the glass display cabinets, previously acquired through a State Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant, contains souvenirs and items of interest from the Innisfail region.

IDHS President Trish Ernst attended the launch of the ‘Unlocking Tully’s Past’ display at Tully Library.

Members also participated in social meetings with El Arish, Mission Beach and Cardwell museums quarterly to discuss plans and projects.

As part of the five-day Art Deco Festival, the Society held a successful Cemetery Walk last September, which attracted over 100 people who learned about the stories of early pioneers buried at the Innisfail Cemetery.

An exciting item donated to the museum is a handmade doll on the island of Crete during WW2.

Seventeen members and guests attended the Society’s Christmas luncheon at the newly refurbished Crown Hotel in Innisfail.

The Society has secured a Cassowary Coast Regional Council RADF Grant, so in 2022 the focus is on completing their website, with links to all museums in the Cassowary Coast region, including El Arish and Cardwell.

IDHS is always looking for more enthusiastic volunteers about the region and its history.

The Society’s AGM is on Thursday, March 3 at the museum starting at 5.30 pm with all new members welcomed.

MISSION Arts Theatre Ensemble hosts an evening with award-winning local poet and playwright Laurie Trott at Mission Beach Community Arts Centre on Tuesday, February 15.

After COVID-19 cut short the season, Trott’s play ‘To Kill a Cassowary’ relaunched last year and attracted sell-out audiences at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre in Cairns.

Trott reveals her journey from when she started writing the script for her heart-warming comedy in 2014 until ‘To Kill a Cassowary’ opened in 2021.

She will speak about the writing process and the many creative challenges faced along the way before it finally made it to the stage.

In 2022, Trott won the Cassowary Coast Regional Council Cultural Award on Australia Day. The bar opens at 6.30 pm with free nibblies, admission is $5 at the door, and the event starts at 7.00 pm with Questions/Answers welcomed by audience members.

Why are they there, and how long will the convoy stay in Canberra?

SARI RUSSO THOUSANDS of Australians have been flocking to Canberra via convoys. It all started with a truckie in WA. He spoke to a mate and said, 'I have had enough! What the hell, I am going to Canberra, want to come?'

They both put it to their mates, and within an hour, there was twenty. When they woke up the following day, there was 400.

From there, supported by Canadian friends (who started the global movement and have smashed the world record by having over 79kms of trucks in convoy), the first convoy made its way to Canberra on January 31.

Now, every state has been galvanised, and convoys have either landed or are making their way to Canberra from all over Australia.

FNQ has just sent their third wave, and so has Victoria.

The convoy participants believe that the Government is engaging in overreach acts by not allowing people the freedom to choose. Mainly as the vaccines in their current form do not stop people from getting or transmitting COVID-19, and there are currently a significant number of reports in the community of people who have had adverse reactions to the vaccine.

Dr Robert Malone appearing on Joe Rohan caused lots of controversy in America. Mainly as he is a physicist and biochemist whose early career was focused on mRNA technology, and he isn't an advocate for its current usage.

The main concern of the convoy members is that in a free society, people should have the right to choose what they would like to do with their bodies, and parents should not be pressured to vaccinate their children.

The mandate of the protesters is that they will stay in Canberra until the Australian Government honours an individual's freedom to choose what is done to their bodies.

Some individuals who posted why they joined the 2022 Convoy to Canberra informed that they wanted to end the mandates.

Many people decided to get the vaccine not because they agreed but succumbed to the current climate of fear and pressure to conform. They didn't want to lose their jobs; they wanted to be allowed into hospital or aged care facilities and wanted to be able to socialise.

Members of the convoys are both vaxed and unvaxed. They are happy for Australians from all walks of life to join them as they continue to stand for freedom of choice. Especially for the

Feast of rugby league at Tully Showgrounds MARIA GIRGENTI TULLY Tigers Rugby League Football Club is hosting a bumper day of footy action on Saturday, February 12, at the Tully Showgrounds.

Four trial games will feature Northern Pride, Townsville Blackhawks, and Cowboys Young Guns teams.

The first game between Northern Pride and Townsville Blackhawks Under 19 Women’s teams kicks off at 3.30 pm.

The Northern Pride and Blackhawks Under 16 teams are following this game at 4.40 pm, followed by the Northern Pride and Blackhawks Under 18 curtainraiser game at 5.50 pm.

Golf News Ingham Golf INFORMATION for upcoming events is below: Every Tuesday till the end Of February, Geoff and Fred will be running a competition. Be at the club by 12:30 pm for a 1:00 pm hit off. This is open to all members.

The Ladies Captain proposes Wednesday, February 2, to restart games before the season proper starts as per the programme. All feedback is welcome!

If you would like to play before then on a Wednesday, be there at noon for a 12:30 pm start.

The Thursday 14-hole competitions will continue over Summer also. Be at the club by 12:30 for a 1:00 hit off.

Results For the Last Week: On Tuesday, eleven players created a competition won by Alan Cockburn with 39 Stableford points, followed by runner-up Paul Menegon with 35 points. Mick Fluerty took the rundown prize with 31 points.

Thursday saw ten players compete in the fourteen-hole competition.

Alan Cockburn, again the winner, had a nett 65. Runner-up was Paul Menegon, again, with 66 ½ nett.

Saturday saw a Stableford being played again, with thirteen competing.

Jayden Swarbrick took the winner’s prize with 41 points, followed by runnerup winner Colin Noble who ended with 37 points. Steve Hart and Alan Cockburn took the rundown awards

with 36 points each, and Alan Cockburn took the pin shot.

On Sunday, the first Monthly Medal was well attended. The winner was Gary Cantoni with 68 nett, and the runner-up was Brian Scanlon with 70 nett. Rundown prizes went to Regan Chinotti, Ian Swarbrick, and Steven Hart with 72 nett. Pin shots were won by Marty Smith on hole 4 and Jayden Swarbrick on hole 7.

Innisfail Golf Club A SPECIAL thank you to the grounds crew for their efforts last week, especially John Lombardi and Craig Alman, for getting fairways cut for the Australia Day 2 Ball Ambrose event last Wednesday.

Please let Jake Cockle or Andrew Rose know any members who can lend a hand for two or three hours on Thursday.

A special mention to Glenn and Jo Powell from Barrier Reef Motel for organising and sponsoring the great Australia Day 2 Ball Ambrose, as well as those committee members who cooked, worked the bar, ran putting/chipping competitions and cleaned/ packed up.

The weather held out for the day as 36 players hit the course, and there were stacks of food, drinks and prizes for everyone.

Drawn partners is an excellent idea as it gets everyone playing golf with different members and all players had fun.

Congratulations to all the winners, and we look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.

Saturday 29 comp, we played a S’Ford with a c/ back decision going to Gavin Camilleri winner and Fran Lomas R/Up both on 33. Hipas Donald took the Approach shot on #3/12, with Wayne Bolton finally winning N.T.P. on #5/14 All-In. This Saturday, 5, is the commencement of our 2022 comp year.

Ingham Bowls Club Australia Day Celebrations IT was a wonderful day celebrating Australia Day at the Ingham Bowls Club.

Rain looked like it would spoil the day but thank you, Lord, for the sunshine.

It was great to see 48 players on the green enjoying themselves.

Innisfail Men’s Bowls

LAST Thursday saw thirty-four bowlers enjoy a social afternoon on the green.

After two games of twelve ends, the winning team consisted of Sergio Dalla Pozza, Doug Juhas and Clem Kinbacher.

Visitors are most welcome to join in the social days on Thursdays with names to be in by 12.30 pm for a 1.15 pm start.

Next Thursday, February 10, the club’s secretary Gordon Goes donated prize money for the men’s social bowls afternoon.

Sergio Dalla Pozza proved too strong for Graeme Anderson in the A-Grade club singles game, winning the battle of the bionic arms.

The Games Director has requested players complete the first round of all games as soon as possible.

Players, please check the notice board for your games and organise to play them.

Innisfail Ladies Bowls

On Wednesday, INNISFAIL Ladies had their first rollup for 2022 and were pleased to return to the green.

All senior ladies were present, 12 of the 16 playing members, and Louise Hoskins and Vera Rowe from South Johnstone.

by South Johnstone Bowls Club, played out last Wednesday, with a full green of bowlers vying for a share of the prize money on offer.

Forty-eight players from Innisfail, South Johnstone, Silkwood, Gordonvale and Yungaburra played two games of self-selected mixed two bowl triples for 14 ends, or until the bell (1hr30m time limit).

Scoring on the day saw teams with a win collect two points plus margin, a draw for one point, and in the event of a tie, the team scoring the most significant number of shots claimed the win. All dead ends resulted in spot the jack.

Margaret Longford made the presentation of the Cup to the winning team of Tony Burns, Tim Kerrigan, and Craig Riddell.

The team in second place with two wins + 15 was (18 ends) Sergio Dalla Pozza, Ian Humphreys and

Michael de Vries.

In third place with two wins, +15 (14 ends) was the trio of Judy Rick, Dareyle Hester and Glennis Buttigieg.

South Johnstone Bowls Club hosts the annual Peter Longford Australia Day Cup held in Peter’s honour as a respected club member.

‘Pumpkin’ Peter Longford leaves behind his legacy as a real gentleman, great bowler, and for his contribution to the South Johnstone Bowls Club both, as a player and promotion of the game throughout the district on local radio and in print media.

Longford passed away on January 12, 2020; however, his memory lives on through his wife Margaret, daughter Leanne Bolger, grandson James, and extended family members.

Those who knew him will remember his largerthan-life personality, passion for bowls and love of the South Johnstone Bowls Club.

AS we get closer and closer to the footy season kicking off in our great country, let's take a closer look at the preseason trials and games that will quench our footy thirst before the competition kicks off.

First off the calendar, and one of my favourite games, the NRL All-Stars. The game usually welcomes back our love for the game, big hits, great tries and watching our heroes once again get it on. But the whole concept that is the All-Stars is an essential ingredient for our game, as it highlights the grassroots of our Polynesian and Australian Indigenous heritages that have a long and proud history in Rugby League.

The game is taken to the fans, culture is celebrated, and both heritages clash in a celebration of dance that usually makes the hair on your back stand up.

As we get ready to celebrate the NRL All-Stars, let's take a look back at the best 10 Maori and Indigenous players in the rugby league.

10. Greg Inglis- one of the most gifted athletes of his time, he had it all. Speed, strength and power.

Give the ball to him when you need a try.

9. Tawera Nikou- A powerhouse forward, but could ball play as a link in the middle. He should've got the 1999, Clive Churchill.

8. Steve Renouf- Struggle to find a player of his glide. He was simply the Prince of centres for a reason. His Grand Final try will be played in heaven after we're long gone.

7. Manu Vatavaui- One of the most destructive

4. Sonny Bill Williams- As much as we hate the guy, he will always be the most outstanding athlete either union or the league has seen in the modern game.

His strength, speed and balance made him so sought after that he became an icon.

3. Gordon Tallis- This man gets in there based totally on his pure aggression. When his side needed an enforcer, Tallia took no prisoners to bash anyone, with and without football in hand.

Once ragged doll a player for 2km for being an NSW Blues.

2. Jonathan Thurston-The great and legendary goal kicker Darryl Halligan once said if I needed someone to kick a goal to save my save, then JT would be the man. When the game is on the line, JT would consistently deliver. My favourite player outside a Broncos jersey. The greatest modern player of all time.

1. Arthur Beetson- The greatest ever. His legacy is that he changed the game forever. Without him, Rugby League wouldn't be close to where it is now. The GOAT of footy, this guy made it possible for anybody to play this game. He became the first Australian Indigenous Captain in any sports in Australia ever, making him an Immortal for a reason.

Two local junior soccer players sign with Newcastle Jets’ A-League Under 15 squad MARIA GIRGENTI THE sky is the limit for two talented local junior soccer players who recently signed with the Newcastle Jets A-League Under 15 squad in 2022.

A fortnight ago, Zaviah Di Carlo and Happy Venables played for the Jets at Valentine Sports Park against some of the best New South Wales teams.

Di Carlo, aged 15 and Venables, aged 14, will soon move from Innisfail to Newcastle.

They will be soccer teammates and students at Hunter Sports High School.

At the age of four, Di Carlo started with Innisfail Tigers. In Under 9s, he represented Johnstone River Football.

Since the age of nine, Di Carlo started training twice a week with head coach Zenon Caravella at Caravella Football Academy.

Happy Venables in action has earned a spot to trial with the Newcastle Jets A-League Under 15 squad.

Since the age of eleven, Di Carlo has played for Innisfail United and played in the Under 12 team, who finished as runners up in the 2018 grand final.

For three years, Di Carlo has been part of the SAP and TSP representative program and, in 2022, gained selection in the Queensland Country State team.

Di Carlo received the Male Junior Player with the Most Potential in 2019 at Innisfail United Football Club awards.

Over the past five years, Di Carlo has competed in Caravella Academy tournaments in Sydney, including Futboltec Invitational, Nick Rizzo, Sydney International Cup and FNQ Youth Cup. Di Carlo said he would not be the player he is today without the professional guidance and mentorship of Zenon Caravella and Caravella Football Academy.

It is fitting both boys will be playing for the Newcastle Jets as it is where Zenon Caravella finished his professional career.

“Whilst it is daunting to move away from my family and hometown, I intend to grab this opportunity with both hands in the pursuit of excellence.”

“I am ready for the challenge ahead, and this would not be possible without the support of Zenon Caravella, Crios O’Hare, my parents, and Innisfail United Football Club.”

At the age of five, an extremely shy Happy Venables started with Boogan Stars Junior Football Club, where he played for two years.

He played for Boogan Stars from Under 6 - 11 and most recently in the Innisfail United JPL team.

For three years, Venables has been part of SAP under the guidance of Zenon Caravella. He received the FNQ Best and Fairest Player Award in 2019.

After joining CFA, Venables progressed to the High-Performance program, where the actual fire in his belly was lit.

‘Zabiha has always played the game with incredible drive and hunger. He is an exciting player with an eye for goals, and I am sure he will be a terrific addition to the Jets squad.

‘Happy is another talented, quality player and a great reader of the game who is always influential in the centre of the pitch,” said Zenon Caravella.

This is a long-time dream come true for both boys who plan to work hard, move up the ranks and do the Far North region proud.

UNFORTUNATELY, the wet and windy weather

I would expect the fishing to be confined to the estuaries and coastal creeks. Again the Hinchinbrook Channel looks like a great option. The morning or late afternoon. As mentioned earlier, I would look at the mouth of the drains during the runout tide and then move into the creeks and fish the structure during the run-in tide.

With the mud crab numbers increasing, I would be setting a few pots.

Those without a boat should look at fishing the

weekend.

Feast of Ruby League at Tully P12

Local horse rider Hanna Corica picks up a National Western Dressage Award MARIA GIRGENTI LOCAL horse rider Hanna Corica and her 19-yearold quarter horse mare Haverbecks Luna have won a National Western Dressage Award for the 2020 - 2021 season, from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021.

Corica, aged 15 from Innisfail, won the National High Point - Reserve Champion - Youth - Western Dressage Association of Australia National Award.

Horse Association (NQQHA) for bringing Western Dressage to North Queensland, especially the committee, for their assistance and guidance.

Geoff and Vicki Toomby from Toomby Horsemanship have been a part of Corica’s family since before Corica was born.

A special shout out to her sponsor Karly Eldridge from Stable-Ised Equine for her nutritional guidance when feeding her equine dance partners.

They are excellent mentors, having taught Hanna horsemanship and life skills. She is hugely grateful for their love, guidance and support.

Riders collect points from placings and scores from all season shows, including four local Western Dressage shows.

In October 2020, Corica also travelled south to Maryborough for the Fraser Coast Championships.

Corica and Haverbecks Luna competed in two levels of competition, Basic Level and Level 1, against other Youth riders and the Open category and achieved placings at all shows.

The 2020 - 2021 National Level Champion and Reserve Champion awards appeared in the annual report at the Western Dressage Association of Australia late in 2021.

For next season, Corica has already competed at the North Queensland Quarter Horse Association Western Dressage Show 1, Series 5 held in Innisfail last September, and Show 2, Series 5 last October in Malanda.

Corica’s family is incredibly proud of Hanna and her team’s achievements, especially her determination, drive and dedication to her horses.

In 2022, Corica will participate in more Western Dressage competitions, starting with the first one, Show 3 Series 5, in Malanda on March 19 - 20.

Other events include the ARBC Western Dressage Championships, Dalby - April 16; National Championship Show, May 6 - 8, QSEC, Caboolture; Show 4, Series 5 - June 18 - 19, Innisfail; Western Dressage Championships - October 4 - 6, Fraser Coast, Maryborough, followed by State Western Dressage Champions from October 7 - 9, also in Maryborough.

In the past couple of years, Corica has discovered a passion for Barrel Racing, so she has her sights set on competing in more of these races.

This will add more kilometres to her schedule, and 2022 is shaping up a hectic year.

In 2021, Corica competed at different shows held by Top End Western Horse Club, based out of Mareeba.

After accumulating points from all events, Corica and Haverbecks Luna won the 2021 TEWHC High Point Beginner Youth Award.

At each show, Corica competed in events that count towards the High Point Beginner Youth, which included showmanship at halter, hunter under saddle, hunter seat equitation, hunter hack, western pleasure, western horsemanship, reining and trail.
