Let unvaccinated healthcare workers fill the void: Dametto WITH more than 2300 Queensland Health staff currently on leave due to COVID-19[1] and close to 1000 hospitalisations with COVID-19 or influenza, Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and Hinchinbrook MP, Nick Dametto is pleading with the Government to drop the vaccine mandate still in place for Queensland healthcare workers in order to alleviate the staffing pressure on the healthcare system.

primary and secondary education, prisons, youth detention centres, watch houses, and airports. “How is it fair to allow some workers in highrisk settings back to work while excluding our healthcare workers?” Mr Dametto said. “How can the Government sit by idly while there are people ready to fill those gaps? “Unvaccinated

workers could safely return to work by implementing strict workplace health and safety protocols such as the use of Personal Protective Equipment. “Unvaccinated visitors have been able to visit State Hospitals for quite some time now, so why can’t our valued healthcare workers return to work?” The KAP believes that people should not be discriminated against or denied access to their workplaces based on their health choices, and they will continue to fight to end COVID-19 vaccination mandates throughout Queensland.

The Hinchinbrook MP’s calls come after 6900 new cases of COVID-19[2] were recorded in Queensland on Wednesday (July 14), with more than 45,000 active cases. “The reality is COVID-19 is a virus we have no choice but to learn to live with, that’s evident in the number of cases we’re seeing, people are getting on with their lives, but our poor healthcare system is still being hamstrung by the Government’s vaccine mandate,” Mr Dametto said “It just doesn’t make sense that we have healthcare workers who are fit for work, being force to stand down because they are unvaccinated while the State is experiencing a severe worker shortage.”

OUR TEAM Managing Editor/ Director Sari Russo management@ wettropictimes.com.au

Mr Dametto questioned why the mandate was still in place for workers in healthcare and hospitals, especially when a COVID-19positive parent can gain clearance to enter a hospital to visit their sick child. As of June 30, COVID-19 vaccinations were no longer required for workers in ‘high-risk settings’ such as early childhood,

I was talking to God late one night after trying to get some answers about a difficult circumstance I was in at the time. I decided to open my bible, and Suddenly the text lit up in front of my eyes, 'Trust in the Lord your God and lean not on your own understanding.' The words spoke to my heart, and I knew then at that moment that there was nothing more I could do about my circumstances except surrender everything to God and let him handle it. There was such an almighty peace that came over me when I decided

to let it all go and lay it at God's feet. Even though my circumstance had not yet changed, I wasn't worried, I wasn't afraid, and I found comfort in my Father's words.

consuming you, Is worry and fear keeping you awake at night?

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to see how God moves. Did you know you can also take captive your thoughts? When the thoughts come, simply say, I renounce (what you just thought) in Jesus name!

Philippians 4:7 NIV I know surrendering isn't always easy. It can be pretty challenging. We can often run around and try to handle everything and say to ourselves, 'I've done everything I could, and I've done everything right but it seems that nothing works out?' Are your thoughts running wild and

May I encourage you to seek the Father in these times and ask you to lay your worries at his feet.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find

rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:29-30 NIV

The RESTA reptile show with snakes and lizards were popular with adults and children alike, whilst Carters Animal Farm was again a huge hit, especially with the youngsters as they cuddled and patted chickens, sheep, ducks, horses, camels, donkeys and goats. Comedy pig racing, miniature trains and model aeroplanes from the Innisfail & District Aero-Model Club, roving entertainers, Rollo the Clown, as well as the custom cars and motorcycle display proved popular with the crowds. Exhibitors from across the region presented 147 head of Prime cattle section for the Innisfail Show, with a strong number of junior exhibitors and prize winners. SARI RUSSO NEE HYYTINEN AS the owner of a media company, I have heard the stories of Rupert Murdock’s campaign to destroy his competitors. He bought up all the printing presses and the newspapers with strong competition so that only his business could survive. When I look around at what is happening in the modern work environment - ‘healthy competition’, and I see much we have succumbed to becoming a dog-eat-dog world, it worries me. It goes against the best way to live. Be gracious to me, O God, for man has trampled on me; All day long, the adversary oppresses and torments me. My enemies have trampled upon me all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me. When I am afraid, I will put my trust and faith in You. In God, whose word I praise; In God, I have put my trust; I shall not fear. What can mere man do to me? Psalms 56:1-4 I don’t personally think like this. I believe in healthy competition. Make sure your product is excellent so that people will want to come and purchase it. God’s grace pours out on us when we walk in unity. While living in Sydney, I knew I could go to an area that was just a hub for different beautiful varieties of food. There was never any fear of a food vendor moving next door and stealing business. Instead, it was encouraged by other food services as they knew that in a group of ten people visiting the area, they would all have different tastes. Supporting each other meant that more people would visit the areas to enjoy all the different varieties of food. It attracted visitors. Suppose tourism is the market for our Wet Tropics community. In that case, we need to stop trying to destroy other people who are producing a similar product. I am not suggesting being a copycat; if you are a food vendor, support your fellow food vendors. More on offer means that you will attract more people. If there are but few options, people eventually won’t bother turning up at all, and we will be known for ‘what measly pickings we have on offer.’ Suppose your goal is to stay small and only appeal to the current market and ensure that no one wants to move here, then yes. In that case, you will succeed by not supporting healthy competition. I want to be known as an active supporter of local businesses and share in the success of living in a thriving community with a strong economy—a place our children want to live.

“Townsville Crimes” - The sad reality of life in North Queensland OFFENDERS doing burnouts in stolen cars and driving into oncoming traffic, violent car jackings and a spike in the break and enters across the city over the weekend has Townsville being likened to its own game of Grand Theft Auto, Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto has said. The Hinchinbrook MP has said the havoc caused on Townsville roads over the weekend was just another example of the Palaszczuk Government failing North Queenslanders on crime. “What we saw on the weekend was dangerous criminal behavior running rampant in our streets; the worst part is, it’s nothing new,” Mr Dametto said. “Why does it seem that these kids and criminals have more of a right to safety than the rest of us? “We’ve been suffering under this crime crisis for far too long and while the Government teeter around the edges of this issue, the people of Townsville will continue to live in fear and foot the bill.” Mr Dametto said people had lost faith in not only the Government of the day but also raised concerns that police have limited ability to administer the law under current Labor policies. “Do we want to live in a society where people have given up on the law? It seems that internal policy and procedures are holding the hardworking officers back from administering the full force of the law, effectively writing a hall pass for these offenders,” Mr Dametto said. “In many cases, you have more chance of finding your car dumped in Townsville or burnt out after it has been stolen than the police pursuing and intercepting the criminals who are responsible. “I’m calling on the State Government and the Commissioner to let the police do their jobs – give them back the powers to once again pursue stolen vehicles, let them stop the problem at the bud.”

Mr Dametto said on top of his calls for the Government to find ways to intercept vehicles, mandatory sentencing for offenders found guilty of the unlawful use of a motor vehicle and car-jacking offences would be a necessary deterrent if there were any chance to slow down the trend. “Police officers are working night and day to keep us safe, the least they deserve from this Government is policy and legislation to back them up,” Mr Dametto said. “This is why last year I called for adult offenders charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and car jacking to face mandatory three years in prison, and to remove detention as a last resort for youth offenders.”

Smoke advice: Little Mulgrave National Park (Gillies Range Section) QUEENSLAND Parks & Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a multi-staged planned burn within the Little Mulgrave National Park, commenced 13 July 2022. As a result, smoke may be seen from the Gillies Range Road, Boar Pocket Road, Bruce Highway and Little Mulgrave Valley. Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads, so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions. Weather pending, staged burns are part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests. The aim is to reduce the volume of forest fuels to reduce the intensity and severity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration. Four new police officers hit the Innisfail beat MARIA GIRGENTI FRESH from the Townsville Police Academy, four first-year constables received postings to Innisfail Police Station and started general duties. Maree Mulcahy, Bridie Egan, Sethryn Smith and Nathan Brayshaw are the fresh faces who were part of a squad of recruits from the Townsville academy, aged between 19/20s - 50s from a broad and diverse range of professional backgrounds, who have taken up placements at Far North police stations. During their six months of intense training at the QPS Academy in Townsville, recruits covered driver training, firearms, computers, domestic violence, police skills, mental health, arrests, drink driving, tasers, traffic crashes, physical tests/obstacle courses, as well as heaps of legislation, laws and paperwork. For the next 12 months, these First Year Constables will practice skills learnt at the academy and acquire new skills as they face the challenges of 'real world' policing. They will work closely with experienced Field Training Officers, Constables Shane Colhoun, Zac McAulay, Lloyd Badger, Peter Nixon, Melissa Patrick and Adam McGuire. The latter will mentor them in community policing. This will also involve day and night shifts, rotations and spending time working in specialist sections, such as the Child Protection Investigation Unit, Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), scenes of crime, custody, domestic violence and prosecutions. Constable Mulcahy, a mother of three, who hails from Ayr, previously worked in the disability support and fitness field. She also holds a Certificate III in

Fitness, and since she was a child has always wanted to pursue a career in policing. Her motivation to join the police started at the age of 16, after doing work experience at Ayr Police Station. Constable Egan, from Cairns, grew up on the Atherton Tablelands. She worked in childcare for over ten years, primary and after school, before going to James Cook University, Cairns, to study a fouryear Bachelor of Creative Industries Photo Media.

Sunday August 14 9AM-5PM

Egan has worked as a freelance photographer/videographer for the past four years. Smith was born in Victoria but mainly lived in Cairns and, from an early age, has always wanted to be a police officer. His father was a Parole Officer and always around prosecutors, police and magistrates, which provided great motivation. Before applying for the police service, he worked at Coles for a merchandising company that took him to Brisbane, Cairns and Innisfail. Brayshaw is from Canberra and moved to Mission Beach seven years ago. Before joining the police, he completed a Certificate IV in Frontline Management. He worked in trade supply roles in floor/wall tiles and plumbing. His uncle was in the Northern Territory police service and is now working in AFP in Canberra. For those considering going into the police force, the four new constables said, 'give it a shot' and gain life experience, whilst they felt confidence, diligence, integrity, empathy, resilience, as well as excellent communication skills, and good organisation are essential qualities to be a good police officer.'

A record 13 breeds will be on display during the 4th annual Tablelands Better Beef Open Day when 14 studs simultaneously open their gates to commercial breeders on Sunday August 14, 2022. Better your beef breeding by seeing first-hand the best seedstock operations on the Atherton Tablelands.

Goondi State School students' Dare to Do Well' in 2022 MARIA GIRGENTI GOONDI State School started in 2022 with a total of 380 students, including 63 new Preps and 16 classes. They have now completed two busy and productive terms. The school welcomed two new Prep teachers, Wendy Sheffield and Leigh Tredwell, Tayla Vandal (Year 1), Nathan Worth (Year 2) and Jessie Scott (Year 4/5). This year, teaching staff are continuing to focus on Explicit Teaching and working at broadening our skills in the delivery of inquiry and investigative learning. Principal Peter Begemann, who is in

his fifth year, said in 2022, the school is developing more opportunities for IT skills for Year 5 students through trialling a BYOD program. Currently, the whole school is receiving an uplift and is being repainted. At the Student Leader Investiture assembly, student leaders recently received their badges and read the Pledge of Office. Mr Begemann said student leaders are responsible for representing their peers, listening to their concerns and striving to influence making their school a better place. He outlined the qualities that make a good student leader, including possessing a great attitude, communication skills,

being well organised and being a great leader amongst one's peers. This year's Goondi State School Student Council consists of captains Giacomo and Sienna and school leaders Shanvir, Emily, Keean, Kaitlyn, Connor and Taylah. Sports house captains Palmerston: Piper and Logan Geraldton: Allariah and TyleeshaAnne Johnstone: Yasmine and Bailey The breakfast club runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.00 am 8.30 am. The P&C Association always welcomes new members, with meetings held on the third Monday of each month at 5.30 pm in the library. Goondi State School's motto is 'Dare to Do Well,' reflected in all aspects of the school, with staff consistently aiming

WITH great pleasure, I am able to announce that the TSC is now open five days a week in Tully. This is in addition to TSC staff delivering office-based services five days a week in Innisfail, three days a week in Mission Beach, and one day a week in Cardwell. Meanwhile, the TSC continues to conduct regular home visits to community members throughout the region. This reduces the travel burden on families and reduces disruption to children's routines, making it easier for families to access support where they and their children feel comfortable. Information, Advice and Referral A core role of the TSC is to provide information about services delivered by the TSC, government and non-government organisations. TSC support staff work with you to understand your issues and link you with appropriate services that support you to make positive changes in your life. Advocacy TSC support staff can support you in ensuring your rights as a member of our community are upheld. We can advocate on your behalf to other services, government departments, councils, insurance companies, etc. Domestic and Family Violence Service The Cassowary Coast Domestic and Family Violence Service (CCDFVS) provides support, therapeutic counselling and court support for women and children affected by Domestic and Family Violence (DFV). The CCDFVS works to improve the safety of women and children while addressing the long-term impacts of

towards best practice and students striving to be the best they can be. Students strive to follow the Goondi 5 school values: Be Safe, Show Respect, Participate and Work Hard, Get Organised and Bounce Back. The last term, students participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, inter-house cross country, Cassowary Coast Northern gala soccer day (Year 6), touch football and rugby league trials. GSS is enrolment managed; however, in-catchment enrolments are still available, and further information is available by contacting the school office. During term two, students participated in ANZAC Day, a Spell-athon competition sponsored by the P&C Association, an inter-house athletics carnival, Innisfail Young Performers Competition, and Harmony Week celebrations.

DFV. The CCDFVS can assist in developing options to remain safely in your home close to social and community supports, including friends and family, school and work. We understand confidentiality keeps you and your family safe! We respect your right to privacy, and we do not discuss your information with anyone without your consent. DFV Court Support The CCDFVS provides weekly court support in Innisfail (Tuesdays) and Tully (Thursdays). Court support can assist in preparing applications, information regarding court processes, emotional support during court, and advocacy with court staff and police. CCDFVS court support services do not provide legal advice. Supporting Families Being a parent can be challenging, and sometimes it helps to have someone to talk to about what's going on in your life and the pressures we all face as parents. The TSC Family Support staff can help you make positive changes in your life by strengthening existing parenting skills and improving your ability to cope with and manage stress. Our Family Support staff can also help you to: • Set family routines. • Improve budgeting skills and access to health and education for you and your children. • Apply for housing. • Develop pathways to employment. Think of the Family Support staff as someone to help you break down the issues you are facing as a parent into manageable tasks, develop strategies and set goals. We will then work with you to achieve your goals. It isn't always easy, and sometimes things don't go as planned, but our Family Support staff are here to help.

Emergency Relief The Emergency Relief (ER) Program is designed to assist community members in times of crisis. This assistance can be in the form of food, fuel, or pharmacy vouchers; assistance with school fees and school supplies as funding allows. The Emergency Relief program is available by appointment. The ER program is funded entirely by donations from the community, fundraising, and Angelcare Tully. Centrelink Support The TSC Centrelink support worker is available Monday to Thursday from 9 am – 1 pm & 2 pm – 4 pm. The Centrelink support worker can assist you with completing claims, registering for online services, uploading documents and proof of identification. Centrelink self-service access to phones and computers is available during regular opening hours. Tully Youth Centre The Tully Youth Centre (TYC) is funded by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council and the TSC to provide a safe place for all young people aged 10 – 17 years. There is great equipment, free food, and regular activities, and it is fully supervised. The TYC is open Monday to Thursday after school and on school holidays. The TYC is located in the Tully Showgrounds. The TSC is funded by the Queensland Government and has been servicing communities throughout the Cassowary Coast since 1991. The Tully Support Centre is located at 54 Bryant Street in Tully, opening hours Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 1 pm & 2 pm to 4 pm, and Wednesday from 9 am to 1 pm & 2 pm to 6 pm. RURAL 20 | FNQ keeps a close watch on potential biosecurity threats Wet Tropic Times

FNQ GROWERS FEARS over the potential spread of two new biosecurity threats highlight the need for industry and community to remain vigilant to protect the region's billion-dollar agricultural industry, FNQ Growers president Joe Moro said. Varroa destructor, a mite that attacks European honeybees, has been detected in New South Wales, restricting the movement of bees and hives from NSW into Queensland. It is considered the greatest threat to Australia's honey and honeybee pollination plant industries. The Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in Bali has Australia's livestock industry on edge, with the beef, dairy, pig and sheep industries desperate to ensure it doesn't reach Australian shores. FNQ Growers president Joe Moro said while different

Horticulture farmers want more road widening work on critical link FNQ GROWERS FNQ Growers has urged the Queensland Government to deliver more road widening works on a critical transport route near Mareeba. The organisation has asked the Transport and Main

Roads Minister to provide funding so widening works on the Mareeba-Dimbulah Road can be extended to Kerribee Park. FNQ Growers president Joe Moro said the road formed part of a critical transport link, servicing the horticultural industry in Dimbulah and pastoral

Young livestock competitors to complete animal welfare course

YOUNG livestock competitors at the 582 agricultural shows around Australia are encouraged to complete a free online course in animal welfare and handling standards offered by the peak body for agricultural shows, Agricultural Shows Australia. The courses are designed for young exhibitors and poultry, cattle, alpacas and sheep judges. They are available on the organisation's website, having been developed in partnership with the Australian Government's Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.

The courses provide training in the basics of animal handling and care and animal welfare principles and show ring ethics, safety and animal wellbeing. "These are all critical aspects to support competitors and for community understanding at a time when consumers tend to know less and less about where their food and fibre originates."

Friday, July 15, 2022 threats to different industries, both Varroa Destructor and FMD, can wipe out industries, businesses and alarmingly, possibly even rural communities. "Biosecurity remains a top priority for our growers, and the recent outbreak of Varroa destructor in NSW clearly shows how quickly these threats can mobilise," Mr Moro said. "Some horticulture industries rely heavily on pollination services, so any threat to this is a direct threat to the viability of horticulture." Mr Moro said while horticulture growers and livestock producers took every step to protect their crop or herd, it was imperative that the public remained vigilant to safeguard the industries that supported them. "FNQ Growers supports a campaign by the livestock industries urging tourists to ditch their boots before arriving back in Australia from Bali," Mr Moro said. "When you consider the economic flow-on effect from agriculture, which for many rural and regional economies is the economic driver, biosecurity is really a matter for all of us." properties further west to Chillagoe and beyond. “We appreciate the recent works that were undertaken,” Mr Moro said. “The importance of this link is further highlighted in the role it plays connecting to Ootan Road and roads south, which carry the region’s produce bound for southern markets. “The road currently carries a large volume of heavy vehicles and, when combined with passenger traffic, can create safety issues.” as well as agricultural colleges to use the courses in the classroom to complement the curriculum in the teaching of practical agricultural science courses. " The learnings and outcomes from the courses enhance the future of the livestock industry through education, demonstration, and competition so that the competitors become more informed producers or employees in the agriculture or food industries." The courses can be accessed for free online at agshowsaustralia.thinkific.com

"We welcome all primary and secondary schools

Chairman Dr. Rob Wilson says the courses are an important educational initiative for schools, students and shows alike and encourages agriculture teachers to utilise them. "It is the responsibility of shows, competitors and exhibitors to provide proper and humane care and treatment of animals," Dr. Wilson explained, "and we want to ensure the next generation are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills."

Traditional owners help landholders to improve habitat in the Wet Tropics

TRADITIONAL owners are helping landholders to protect important habitats across the Wet Tropics.

Michael Morta, a Ngadjon-jii traditional owner and Terrain’s indigenous partnerships coordinator, said the organisation was introducing traditional owners to landholders involved in revegetation, weed management and habitat protection work – and it was leading to new partnerships.

“It was good to have the opportunity to meet face to face, to establish networks and have a conversation about their projects and the country,’’ he said. “It’s also good that landholders with threatened species habitats

on their property are funded to do rehabilitation work.” A new round of Building Rainforest Resilience grants will open in the coming months. Terrain NRM offers the grants to landholders across the Wet Tropics region whose properties are in priority locations, as advised by threatened species recovery teams. The Australian Government funds this project. The grants help with revegetation, weed management and habitat protection initiatives.

“We have supported representatives from Mamu, Mandubarra, Ngadjon, Wadjanbarra Yidinji and Girramay groups to meet with public and private landholders,’’ he said. “And there has been good twoway communication and information sharing.” At Kurrimine Beach, Mandaburra Rangers will begin pig-trapping, fire management and cassowary habitat monitoring work on state land where invasive weeds were recently removed. The land north of Kurrimine’s township includes extensive cassowary habitat and endangered littoral rainforest. Mandaburra Ranger James Epong welcomed a partnership with the Department of Resources to continue caring for country. “This project is of high interest to the Mandubarra traditional owners as it aligns with our caring for country program activities and ranger work plan,’’ he said. “By Terrain contacting us and inviting us to participate, it shows the commitment to involve traditional owners and their ranger teams.” Department of Resources Senior Land Manager Russell Jack said working with traditional owners and NRM groups was helping to improve natural resource outcomes. “We provided fire management training for five Mandaburra Rangers and Mandubarra traditional owners will now monitor these areas and start pigtrapping operations,” Mr Jack said. Mamu Elder Steve Purcell met with three private landholders as part of the new initiative.

DAF announces Spanish mackerel second round of consultation KATTER’S Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto said the Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner needed to stop messing with the livelihood of commercial Spanish mackerel fishers.

to the Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) for the upcoming season.

Last week, licence holders received an update from DAF stating the Spanish mackerel quota season would commence on July 1 2022. There had been no change

• Reducing recreational and commercial catch limits;

Today the Minister announced that a second round of consultation is now open until Friday, August 5 and would seek feedback on: • Introducing closed seasons to protect spawning fish and minimise fishing pressure; and

• Improving our data by requiring recreational anglers to report their Spanish mackerel catch. The Hinchinbrook MP said although he was pleased that industry stakeholders would have another opportunity to voice their concerns, the second round of consultation would not have been required if the first round had been executed appropriately. “During the first round of consultation, we saw the Department cherry-pick stakeholders by inviting selected individuals to a meeting,” Mr Dametto said. “I can only hope this second round of consultation is conducted fairly and takes into consideration all critical stakeholders like our commercial fishers, recreational fishers, fish and chip retailers, restaurants, and consumers. “It’s disappointing that the Department has wasted resources and time on the first round of consultation and dragged commercial fishers through the mud while they have been sitting on their hands in Brisbane.” Mr Furner also stated that Spanish mackerel stocks are historically low. If steps weren’t taken to rebuild their stocks, it could be the end of the fishery. Mr Dametto questioned the validity of the Minister’s claim, stating that if the stock levels were at record lows, the Department would have reduced the TACC last week, but that wasn’t the case. “Commercial Spanish mackerel fishers are losing confidence in the industry; this is their livelihoods that are at stake,” Mr Dametto said. “Compare these proposed reforms to the sugarcane industry, for example, imagine if a farmer was told next season you’ll only be able to harvest up to 10% of your crop, this would decimate the industry.”

State Member for Hinchinbrook and KAP Deputy Leader Nick Dametto.

The Hinchinbrook MP encouraged stakeholders to participate in the second round of consultation via the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries website https://daf.engagementhub.com.au/

Sharon Azalea muscles her way to bodybuilding glory

“Mostly, I evenly distribute my macros between carbohydrates, protein and fats.”

Judges also look for leanness in competitors, which is to have a clear separation of muscles and visible striations.

Azalea was born and raised in Innisfail, having completed her primary schooling at Innisfail East State School and secondary education at Innisfail State High School. Since Azalea was a teenager, she has always been involved with gyms, having worked at both Frank’s and Pappy’s gym in Innisfail; however, she did not start competing until 2015, at age 35. “I love training, feeling strong and fit, and having the energy, but primarily I love the science.” “I am fascinated by the process and understanding how everything we put into our bodies plays a part and kicks off a well-engineered process.” Four weeks out of a competition, the sacrifices kick in for Azalea, which means staying in/less socialising to give her body adequate rest. “Be committed and focused and remember not just your goals but the ‘why’ so if you are not having fun anymore, then it is time to change something.” Her day always starts with light cardio; she trains anywhere from 1 - 2 hours, 4 - 6 days a week. “Diet is all about balance and fuel, so during the off season I lift heavier weights so need to have enough fuel.” “As the workload lightens, closer to a show, I adjust my diet accordingly to meet my training needs.”

Sharon Azalea flexes her muscles onstage at INBA Global Australia National Championships in Brisbane.

Sharon Azalea celebrates her body building success in Brisbane with her partner Robert O’Loughlin and her daughter Sunnie.

Sharon Azalea is all smiles after achieving bodybuilding victory and Pro-Elite Athlete Global status.

MARIA GIRGENTI SHARON Azalea, formerly from Innisfail, now living in Cairns, competed in the INBA Global Australia National Championships - Women’s Bodybuilding at Nissan Arena, Brisbane, on May 28. She defeated the winners of each level in that category, which included Novice women’s, Open Women’s Short, Open Women’s Tall, Masters (her initial category) and Grand Masters. Azalea claimed the overall Women’s Bodybuilding title Azalea and was awarded Pro Elite Athlete - Global Member card (eligible to represent Australia in the World Championships). Competitors perform mandatory poses, and the judging criteria is expansive and detailed. In the female bodybuilding category, judges look for symmetry (are all areas of the body developed proportionately, left and right and top to bottom). Other key elements are muscle maturity (usually a result of consistent long-term training) and a fullness that reflects the duration of the competitor’s commitment to training.

“When training larger and stronger muscle groups, I may need more readily available energy from carbohydrates, however I can scale this back on a rest or lighter training day.” Training is a great family activity for Azalea, as Rob is her training partner, whilst her daughter Sunnie loves doing a training session with her mother. Azalea has a Bachelor of Business (System Analytics) and is currently on a year career break from her Systems Analyst job to pursue her sport and Law studies. 6TH SENSE GLIDE BAITS – BACK IN STOCK!

Fishing News

RoLy Newton

UNFORTUNATELY, the sea conditions were far from perfect last weekend, allowing only the largest boats to travel out to the main reefs. The very few that did manage to travel out reported good catches of Coral Trout and good numbers of Spanish Mackerel. Most boats had to hide in the lee of the reef to fish comfortably. It was terrible news to hear of the boat sinking; we can only hope everyone on board is found okay through some miracle. It must be a stressful time for the families involved. I am writing this report on Tuesday afternoon, and I just received a phone call reporting that there were good numbers of mainly School (doggy) mackerel on the usual grounds east of Dunk Island. Apparently, they are not biting very well; however, most boats are managing a few fish. This could all change with a change in the tide; however, removing a wire trace can often improve your hook-up rate. I have also heard of some nice Spanish Mackerel being caught at the normal haunts such as Olive Rock and Cathedral reef. Forty Foot on the eastern side of Dunk is a prime Mackerel location; however, the sharks are so bad it is difficult to land a fish. For this reason, it is now the last resort location for me. If I have to fish it, I usually try to stay inside Wolf Garron rock as I typically have a reasonable chance to land a Mackerel there. On the eastern side of the rock, your chances are very dismal. The early morning westerlies are allowing some smaller boats to fish close to the coast. Anglers are managing some nice Trout, Gold Spot Cod and Grass Sweet Lip. I have also heard of some quality Crayfish being speared from the close reefs of Kurrimine. Bait fishing in the estuaries in the coastal creeks has been reasonably successful, with anglers catching good numbers of Bream, Whiting and school Grunter. Surprisingly those casting lures or live baiting have managed some good catches of Barra. Most fish have been undersized, with only the occasional quality fish. My manager Derek Maynard caught a 72 cm.

info@wettropictimes.com.au PO Box 1100, TULLY, 4854 70 Butler Street, TULLY fish, and Craig Hawkins, fishing with me, caught a well-conditioned Barra in the early 60cm. Most boats reported a lack of Mangrove Jacks; a few were caught, but this was the exception. There are still good numbers of Mud crabs in the creeks; however, most boats are complaining that most of the crabs are just undersized. Definitely, the better crabs are coming from the Hinchinbrook Channel. I guess a lot more effort must be taken to put the pots in hard to get to areas; a small boat helps here. Fisheries are pretty active at the moment, so don't be tempted to keep an undersized crab; it is just not worth it. I spoke to a couple of young lads that had travelled north to chase Sooty Grunter and Jungle Perch. Unfortunately, the conditions could not be worse; they did manage a couple of fish but found the fishing very hard. The Blue Swimmer sand crabs should be around in reasonable numbers at the moment, and it definitely should be worth your while to set a few pots out on the sand flats wide of the mangroves. I have never put much effort into working the Sandies out, but down south, they like setting them around weed beds. I would very much like someone to fill me in if they have the answers. At this early stage of the week, the weather is not looking too promising for this weekend. The forecast shows the wind dropping off a little on Saturday afternoon and 10 to 15 knots on Sunday. Hopefully, boats will get to travel out and fish for mackerel at some of the inshore spots. It sounds like the school Mackerel have arrived, and hopefully, the Spotties will turn up soon. Either side of the morning high tide will suit those that wish to fish for Grunter in the creeks or along the edge of the flats. I usually like the morning run-in tide to lure fish for Barra and Jacks; however, with the cooler water conditions, possibly the afternoon run-out tide might get the bite as the water temperatures should be up a little. Water Temperatures play a big part in getting Barra to bite; the water temperature can increase by 2 to 3 degrees during the day's heat.

Tully Tigers' 'Women in League' round STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI

for her support over the past few decades.

ON July 9, Tully Tigers Rugby League Football Club hosted a Women in League round with a luncheon and jersey auction with $7,500 raised for the Tully Hospital Foundation.

Club President Anthony Emmi thanked Ketchell for her contribution to the club, including her role as a rugby league mum/grandmother and having many talented players in her family who have played for the Tigers.

Tully Tigers A-grade players wore one-off limitededition pink/purple jerseys in their clash against Cairns Kangaroos. Before the game, Tully Tigers players modelled the 17 jerseys up for auction, with the highest winning bid of $500 received for the Number 7 jersey, worn by Tully Tigers A-grade captain Colin Wilkie. The Number 19 jersey was presented to Suzette Reis, President of Tully Hospital Foundation, as a future raffle prize for the Foundation.

A special mention to Tully Tigers Women in League jersey sponsors: Bouch Belts, Medicinal Sports Massage, Biarritz for Classic Hair, Livelife Pharmacy, Waters Family Daycare, Kylie's Family Daycare, JCG Logistics Pty Ltd, Butcher Contracting, Wattle Wear, Mamma Mia Leisure Wear, Tully Bakery, Tully Raycare Family Pharmacy, Tully Drapery, Makeup and Beauty by Alana, Julie's Beauty, Alice Mac Hair and Dr Kim Favier.

Boutique Maree, Laurice McGowan Tanning, Biarritz for Classic Hair and Aussie Hair donated prizes for the day and Romayne Weare (flowers). A huge thank you to the Tully Tigers Club, players, Tigers Old Boys who worked in the canteen and bar to give the ladies a night off, Tully Hospital Foundation volunteers for the catering, volunteers who helped in any way and the ladies who purchased a jersey.

The Women in League round celebrates and recognises the role of women in rugby league and their contribution in all areas of the game. Since 2013, the Tully Rugby League Football Club has hosted a Women in League round with $70,000 raised and donated to charity. The guest speaker was talented halfback and fiveeighth Tahlulah Tillett from Cairns, a proud Torres Strait Island woman and a fantastic ambassador for rugby league. Tillett inspired the audience with her journey, which started as Cairns Kangaroos junior ranks as a nine-year-old, to achieving her childhood dream of playing for Newcastle Knights in the NRL Women's Premiership. In 2017, Tillett represented the North Queensland Marlins women's and NRL Women's Indigenous AllStars teams. Earlier this year, Tillett played for the Indigenous All Stars and, in 2021, was part of the Queensland Gold Stars, who won the BHP Premiership before signing up with the Newcastle Knights to be part of their inaugural NRLW squad. During her junior years, Tillett has also represented Queensland and Australia in touch football. This year's Tully Tigers Women of League recipient is Barbara Ketchell, who received acknowledgement
