our parents and grandparents enjoyed, of creating a meal to be shared with friends and family, is at risk of being lost to time. Interestingly, it is time that seems to be the most significant factor in the move away from the family, preparing and eating a meal together. I learnt to cook in my parent's kitchen; both mum and dad were good cooks. I can also remember reading my grandmother's cookbooks and the tactile sensation of turning the pages, reading the recipes and seeing the black and white image of the finished dishes. The family meal is a great way to pass on cooking skills to our children and also a great way to spend time with our kids and talk with them. Standing shoulder to shoulder with anyone, rather than face-to-face, is a nonconfrontational way to talk, and you are more likely to get a positive response. Eating out or an 'easy meal' is great every now and then and gives everyone, including

THIS week I had on my heart to write about serving. I thought that when we think of serving others, we think of serving as doing things like making a meal, looking after someone sick, volunteering for community events, or picking up groceries for a friend at the local store. I often felt disappointed, I have a busy house and young children to take care of, and I couldn't always physically serve people in their time of need. I spoke to God about how I was feeling and found peace knowing that it was possible to serve others even when I was at home, better yet, anywhere I went. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 10:45 NIV The Lord began to bring names of people to my mind at home, and when I was in the street, I would see people with injuries, and on occasion, I would hear of people's troubles in passing. My heart would weep, and I just had a desire to want to be able to do something to minister to these people. From these moments came my desire to pray. I knew then that I could minister to these people and that I could do it through prayer! I didn't realise it then, but this is called intercessory prayer. Though I didn't know what to pray for at times, specifically about the people God had brought to my mind, I would lift them up in prayer and pray that God would meet every need they had. We don't need to know the specifics when we have a God who knows everything. While some don't believe in

God in our community, I didn't let that stop me from praying, So I would pray anyway, remembering that Jesus died for all. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 NIV Prayer is powerful, it is a might weapon and answer to all our needs, serving through prayer is just as important as serving physically. Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. Acts 3:6-8 NIV

Department of Transport and Main Roads $9 million planning project to plan and protect a suitable road corridor for a potential future bypass of Innisfail THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is progressing a $9 million project to plan and protect a suitable road corridor for a future bypass of Innisfail if required. Options are being investigated for a future bypass of Innisfail to ensure the safety and efficiency of the Bruce Highway can be maintained in the medium to long-term. As part of this project, TMR will investigate solutions to improve the Innisfail community’s safety, flood resilience, capacity and amenity. A planning study is currently being undertaken to identify and preserve a corridor for a future bypass of Innisfail. There is currently no funding available for construction. TMR understands the community may be concerned about the future impact to business operations, the

CCRC Cemetery Strategy to guide cemetery operations for the next 10 years THE Cemeteries Management Strategy was endorsed and adopted by Council at the Local Government meeting on July 28, 2022. The Strategy was updated following community consultation during May and June this year. This Strategy will guide the planning, management, and operation of Cassowary Coast Regional Council controlled cemeteries for the next ten years. It includes several recommendations, such as the development policy, guidelines, and factsheets, ensuring graves and columbarium walls are constructed of materials more suited to our climate. Council will also investigate laser surveying to develop an online plot location and reservation map. Whilst the strategy is specific to the operation and management of Local Government cemeteries including Innisfail, Tully, Cardwell, and Murrigal, during the consultation, feedback was received regarding a potential burial site at Mission Beach and the possibility of a ‘green’ burial cemetery. Other feedback received during the consultation phase, included suggestions to improve the maintenance of the different cemeteries, which has been noted and shared with Council maintenance teams. It will ensure a consistent level of service is upheld to Council owned cemeteries to reflect the significance of these important facilities to our community. An updated draft Strategy will be available to view within the Local Government Meeting Agenda via www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/council-meetings.

Hinchinbrook Council seeking two Civil Cadet Engineers to join their Team

ARE you interested in an Engineering Degree but also want to earn money at the same time? “Young adults in the Hinchinbrook Shire are being encouraged to stay local and kick start their career with Council as a Cadet Engineer” said Mayor Jayo. Council is seeking applications from recent high school graduates and young adults who are considering the commencement of university studies in Engineering next year, or are currently studying and want to return home to finish their Engineering Degree whilst working and being paid. The two Cadet Engineers will rotate between the Infrastructure Works Operations Team and Utility Services Team during their time with Council to gain a diverse range of skills and experience in Civil Engineering. The most recent Engineering Graduate within Council to follow this pathway and whom continues to work with Council is Haydn Grazioli. Haydn is now Council’s Design and Technical Coordinator and his story follows:

“I have always been interested in building things but learned early on that a trade wasn’t really going to be for me. I started looking at different ways to be involved in the industry and settled on engineering. I was always good with numbers, so it was a perfect fit for me. I had initially wanted to go into the private sector but after completing work experience at Council I found it rewarding being able to play a part in providing for not only the people in the community, but the people of my hometown. In 2013 I started studying a Bachelor of Civil Engineering full-time at University. When I started working at Council in 2017, I then transferred from fulltime to part-time study before completing my studies in 2021”. Eliza Carr is Council’s Civil Design Cadet and her story follows:

“The thought of working for Council was very appealing to me as it would allow me to stay in my hometown after completing High School. I have always found math enjoyable, so I thought that an Engineering Degree would challenge me. Working in

a local government setting has always been of interest to me, this is mainly due to the idea of being able to have a part in improving and renewing the assets and infrastructure throughout the Hinchinbrook Shire. I started my role as Cadet Designer in 2021, and I applied because the idea of learning while working in the field that I was interested in studying was an awesome opportunity. After taking a gap year in 2020, I knew I wanted to go to university and the fact that I was able to do that as well as earn an income and stay in my hometown was very appealing to me”. Council Officers will be presenting to Ingham State High School and Gilroy Santa Maria College on Friday, August 12, 2022 to encourage local student to apply. Applications are now open for two Civil Cadet Engineer positions commencing in 2023 and close at 5.00 pm on Monday, September 5, 2022. For further information including how to apply, visit Council’s website Careers at Council page.

Hinchinbrook Shire: Coconut Palms De-nutting Program and Reduction Strategy – Community Consultation ON Tuesday, April 26, 2022, Council adopted the new Coconut De-nutting Program and Reduction Strategy that will decrease the number of Coconut Palms on Council managed lands to less than 330. Council has adopted the strategy to reduce the ongoing maintenance costs related to the twice-yearly de-nutting required to reduce Council’s public liability associated with Coconut Palms. Over the next couple of weeks, Council staff will be focusing on logging potential Coconut Palms for removal across the Shire that have been nominated as part of the longer-term Coconut De-nutting Program and Reduction Strategy. Coconut Palms identified for maintenance or removal will be labelled with coloured flagging tape and their locations entered Council’s GIS database to garner community feedback. Coconut Palms marked with red tape will be earmarked for removal, while those marked with green flagging tape are likely to be maintained. Council will be consulting with potentially affected residents throughout this time, seeking nominations for

removal, or negotiation for maintenance on Coconut Palms due to historical value. Should you have any concerns regarding Coconut Palms on Council managed land adjacent to your property, please contact Council’s Public Spaces Team to discuss further or arrange an on-site meeting. A final draft of the Coconut Reduction Strategy will be made available to the public via Council’s website, Public Consultation page in due course. Residents are reminded that Council has set a limit for the number of Coconut Palms that it can afford to maintain into the future. Once consultation is complete, it is envisaged that removal works in accordance with the scheduled Coconut De-nutting Program and Reduction Strategy will commence in November 2022 and it may take a couple of years to achieve the desired outcomes due to budgeting and resource constraints. For further information, please contact Council’s Public Spaces Team on 4776 4740.

Living on God’s terms, not my own SARI RUSSO NEE HYYTINEN IN this day and age, it is difficult to live on God’s terms. Particularly when you look around you and everyone is trying to make life better, but only for themselves and their families, which isn’t what God called us to do. Riches will not provide security in the day of wrath and judgment, But righteousness rescues from death. Proverbs 11:4 AMP He who oppresses or exploits the poor to get more for himself Or who gives to the rich [to gain influence and favour] will only come to poverty. Proverbs 22:16 AMP He does call us to love him. He does ask us to love our enemies as ourselves, and he does ask us to make disciples of the nations. He also said the meek shall inherit the earth, but he didn’t say live poor. He has asked us to live the life he has called us to live, and when we do, he will bless us and provide abandonly more than we ask. This happens only when we live by his call, not when we live our own way. And God is able to make all grace [every favour and earthly blessing] come in abundance to you, so that you may always [under all circumstances, regardless of the need] have complete sufficiency in everything [being completely self-sufficient in Him] and have an abundance for every good work and act of charity. As it is written and forever remains written, “He [the benevolent and generous person] scattered abroad, he gave to the poor, His righteousness endures forever!” 2 Corinthians 9:8-9 AMP BOB Katter, Federal Member for Kennedy, in a letter to the Assistant Treasurer, Hon Stephen Jones, has condemned past governments failed response to the Youpla collapse, suggesting they had been sitting on its impending doom for decades. Youpla, formerly known as the Aboriginal Community Benefit Fund, went into liquidation in March this year

Katter calls on feds to assist victims of funeral fund collapse after nearly 30 years of controversial operation, leaving thousands of First Australians financially destitute and desperate. Mr Katter said, “Multiple complaints have been received by our office regarding Youpla. I’m told that 2990 people in Kennedy alone have been affected by the insurance fund’s collapse. “One of our constituents has advised us that after losing her son to suicide in 2018, she joined the fund to ensure her children would not have to financially struggle in the future. It is our understanding she will be unlikely to receive any of her funds back – having paid $14,000 into the fund over the years. “We are not advocating for a bailout. We are advocating for government to compensate those affected. The government was asleep at the wheels and, despite knowing, took no action allowing further people to be victims of the inevitable collapse. “The Mareeba Express1 reported more than 300 Indigenous people in Mareeba have been caught up in the collapse of the funeral fund and that Yarrabah has been hit the hardest with a reported 786 people affected in a town with only 525 homes. “This is utterly, utterly disgraceful. The first complaints made against Youpla date back to 1999 federally. The

that would normally go to landfill to find a new home and be reused” said Cr Lancini. “Taking your items to the Tip Shop is free and means fewer quality items end up in landfill” Cr Lancini said. “Council intends to start small and grow the activity, in other towns Tip Shops are very popular and have seen demand for certain items outstrip supply” Cr Lancini said.

New South Wales Government have been aware of these complaints since 1992.” Mr Katter said he had previously written to the Treasurer requesting an investigation with the view to assistance for those affected by the failure of Youpla. In a response provided by the then Senator Financial Services, Senator Jane Hume said, ‘the Government has been after this shonky business for 30 years’. Mr Katter was also visited by a delegation representing “Sorry Business” in Canberra this week, where he was appalled to learn the extent of the collapse. “It beggars’ belief how this company was able to continue such predatory behaviour for so long,” Mr Katter said. “The Albanese government has a chance to set an example and fix this by putting an end to the prolonged financial and emotional suffering of those who have been left at risk of not being able to pay for the funerals of their loved ones. “An investigation must be rolled out immediately with a view to provide assistance to all those affected by the failure of Youpla and its associated entities to ensure they do not lose their funeral insurance plan savings.” Items for sale may include small motor equipment and parts, bicycle parts, furniture and building equipment. Residents will be able to leave items suitable for salvage with staff at no cost, subject to the items being fit for resale. Customers and visitors are advised that site rules apply to Warrens Hill Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre, and these are to be complied with at all times. In due course, items available for purchase will be listed on Council’s website, Tip Shop page.

The Anglican Parish of Innisfail/Tully welcomed Reverend Michael Lindsay as their permanent Priest STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI THE Anglican Diocese of North Queensland Parish of Innisfail/Tully warmly welcomed Reverend Michael Lindsay into the fold after his ordination to the Sacred Order of Priests on June 22, the feast day of St Alban the Martyr at St Alban’s Anglican Church Innisfail. Family, friends, Archdeacons and senior clergy from Cairns, Townsville, Tablelands, New Zealand attended the ordination service. Lindsay stood before the Right Reverend Keith Joseph, Bishop of North Queensland, whilst the priests gathered for the Laying of Hands. After vested, Bishop Keith delivered a copy of the Holy Scriptures to Lindsay and presented him with a chalice and paten. After the Archdeacon of North Queensland, the Venerable Christopher Wright OAM, read the citation. Bishop Keith Joseph presented Lindsay with his Certificate of Ordination and Licence. Originally from Newcastle, Lindsay grew up in Townsville, where he completed his primary schooling and secondary education in Newcastle and Townsville. He completed a Bachelor of Education and Masters in Theology and recently started a Graduate Diploma in Theology. His first teaching role at Townsville Grammar School was for four years, followed by ten years at St Augustine’s College. His role has been as a Catholic secondary classroom mathematics teacher and in senior leadership. Whilst teaching and as Principal at St Josephs in Atherton, he felt drawn to faith and ministry. Lindsay did part-time training in Cairns for four years before his ordination as a Catholic Deacon in 2015 in Atherton. While assisting the leadership team,

it was at Good Counsel College Innisfail which sparked his special connection to the Innisfail community. For 12 - 18 months, he also assisted the leadership team at Mount Saint Bernard College. He was heavily involved in organising the College’s Centenary celebrations in 2021. Lindsay’s role as a Deacon was to minister beyond the parish, whilst his role as a priest is to minister to the Church’s congregation and build and nurture the parish community. He said the two essential ingredients are developing authentic relationships within the parish and broader community. “It is about repackaging the Christian message, so it speaks to today’s audience.”

After Reverend Michael Lindsay received his priest vestment, Bishop Keith Joseph anointed his hands.

“I feel blessed that in my life I have encountered priests and nuns who have really inspired me as authentic examples of the Jesus I know.” “The biggest challenge is how to engage with people in a rapidly changing demographic/landscape of belonging.” Lindsay believes if our lives are joyful, fulfilling, and authentic, people will want to be part of it. The Anglican parish has a diverse

community of Torres Strait Islander and Vanuatuan families, including farm workers from Solomons/Vanuatu, which Lindsay sees as a growth area. His wife Melanie and their two children greatly support Lindsay in his new role. Fr Lindsay is the permanent Priest of the Anglican Parish of Innisfail/Tully, with regular services held in Innisfail, Tully, and Mission Beach and an occasional combined Parish Eucharist and luncheon at Kurrimine Beach.

After his ordination, Bishop Keith Joseph (right) presented Reverend Michael Lindsay with his Certificate of Ordination and Licence.

TVMG Farm tour GREG SHANNON

ONE of the great things about doing variety trials is we can see the differences between the new and the older varieties when they are all planted in the same area. This is definitely the case on our largest variety site in 2022, which was established on the TSL Jenkins farm by TSL farm manager Sean Hodgson in October 2021. We started sampling this site in June this year, measuring potential CCS. This sampling will continue every fortnight until November. We also regularly take stalk diameter and biomass samples to determine each variety's potential Ts/ha. This site includes the newest variety, SRA 37, and standards like Q208 and Q200. In fact, the site has 23

varieties, and on July 28, we were able to conduct a tour of the site for growers and advisors. This event was a great success with 42 attendees, including representatives from Tully and Herbert SRA, HCPSL, TCPSL and Gordonvale-based company Farmacist. During the day, we were able to highlight the different growth characteristics of each variety and discuss the sampling results to date and why we recommend some and not others in each of the sub-districts that make up the Tully sugar industry. Last week a second variety site was established right next door with similar varieties plus another new one which was recently approved called SRA 32. When we have a plant crop site like this, the first job is to monitor the germination to see if there are any standout varieties in terms of germination speed. To do this, we simply mark out 10m of row and count the number of stalks in that 10m every ten days after plaiting until; 70 days after planting. It is quite straightforward work but needs to be carried out consistently to collect accurate data. This data allows us to then fine-tune the SRA recommendations to the sub-district level. In some cases, it also allows us to promote a new variety while

Friday, August 12, 2022 not promoting others depending on the sub-district. In some cases, a variety that is recommended for the entire wet tropics may work very well in another region but not in parts of Tully and vice versa. This way, we can help growers make commercial decisions to avoid planting something that may not work while also maximizing the benefit of the varieties that will work best for us in the long term.

The Indigenous ranger program begins in Mamu country Rangers launch new water monitoring project – Innisfail region THE Innisfail region now has Mamu indigenous rangers caring for country - and a new water monitoring project exciting both elders and the younger generation. The first four Mamu rangers are on board. “This is a good feeling, to be moving forward,’’ senior ranger Francis Joyce says. It’s a simple statement but one loaded with passion – for the land, the animals, Mamu cultural heritage, and the Mamu people’s drive to play a bigger role in land and sea management. The ranger program’s launch follows funding through the Queensland Government’s Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers Program. Rangers will look after cultural heritage sites, monitor biodiversity, help with pest plant control, and lead a new water monitoring program, among other roles. In partnership with Terrain NRM, the water program is building on existing water quality monitoring in the

region, combining cultural knowledge, values and concerns with western science. “We’ll be doing monthly routine water sampling across the Johnstone catchment from its top to end of catchment, testing for things like nutrients, pesticides and suspended solids,’’ Francis says. “We’ll also be monitoring impacts on the rainforest and ecosystems and looking at cultural indicators that came about through consultation with our Mamu people - things like places where there used to be yabby beds, but there aren’t anymore, fish species that have disappeared from certain areas over the years… “The information will give everyone a snapshot of waterway health and a better understanding to move towards solutions. By working together and building partnerships we can create a more sustainable future.” The project is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. It has also involved water monitoring training for rangers and several younger

traditional custodians through Terrain NRM and the Department of Environment and Science. Rusharne Purcell, 20, and Keith Land, 22, share a passion for conserving the land and water. “We’re all striving for one goal – to have an environment that’s not destroyed,’’ Rusharne says. “It’s so good to finally get a chance to help preserve this and our culture.” Mamu Aboriginal Corporation’s Lorraine Maund says momentum is building, from elders through to the younger generation. “Our youth are passionate about the environment and caring for country. Why not harness that to drive things forward?’’ she says. “We’re all custodians and we share and pass on our knowledge for the next generation because if the land is sick then we are sick and our people are sick. Our elders have been sharing what they’ve seen change over time. Combining their knowledge with new data, we can build a bigger picture for the future.”

In addition, we have also nominated teams in both B Grade and A Grade. The Pennants are a longstanding golf tradition in which, as a golf club, we have competed and done well in the past. over the years, it offers a rare chance to take on other clubs head-to-head in a match-play format. If you are interested in playing, nominations forms for both grades are available at the clubhouse this weekend. Please note you will not be eligible for the B grade team if your GA handicap is below 9.5, with anyone above this GA being eligible for the B Grade team. Anticipation was in the air during the draw for everyone’s partners for the shotgun start in the Barrier Reef Motel 2 Ball Ambrose on July 30.

Friday, August 12, 2022 An interesting combination group was pulled out of the hat, but everyone had fun. Seeing new members get out for a round and enjoy the day was fantastic. One thing about a shotgun start is the field starts and finishes around the same time, so everyone can reminisce about the crucial shots of the round and share a cold beverage or two. Scoring was electric, the course was in excellent condition, and the greens ran fast. The teams needed better than 67 nett to get in the prize haul. Glenn Powell and Andrew Rose shot a par round and finished in seventh place. Luke Peters and Ian Saunderson did the same and finished in sixth place. The ring-in crew of Colin Lyons, Stephen Lyons and Rob Mills finished in fourth place, whilst John Slater and Jake Cockle finished in third place. Allan Gould and Ian McDonald had the only sub-par round and finished second. Congratulations to Jack Johnston and James Scullen for taking out first place, with a barnstorming back nine of two under. South Johnstone lawn bowlers win inaugural District 8-A-Side competition MARIA GIRGENTI SOUTH Johnstone lawn bowlers are inaugural winners of the new District 8-A-Side competition, which has replaced Mixed Pennants. Last year, Bowls Queensland established a new State-wide Interclub State 8 A-Side, which commenced in 2022, starting at Club, through to District level, then onto Group playoffs, culminating in State Finals. This State 8 A-Side Event encompasses club sides of four women and four men contesting women’s pairs, men’s pairs and mixed fours disciplines. Each club wishing to enter a side will have an intraclub playoff if needed; if a club only has one side nominated, they will progress. Successful club sides will then advance to District playoffs, with the winning club side then advancing to group playoffs. The TFNQD Eight-A-Side competition featured Innisfail, South Johnstone, Silkwood and Tully teams (Section 1) and Atherton, Mareeba and Yungaburra (Section 2), Brothers Edmonton, Marlin Coast, Edge Hill and Cairns (Section 3), whose fours and pairs

teams played three games before the semi-finals. July 24 - District 8 a Side results for three sections In the semi-final, section 1 winner - South Johnstone, competed against a qualifier, Marlin Coast. South Johnstone prevailed as convincing winners with a total score of 81 - 45 and secured a spot in the final. In the other semi-final, Section 2 winner Mareeba was up against Section 3 winner Edge Hill, as the qualifier came out of Section 3. Edge Hill, with a total score of 78, defeated Mareeba 42 and met South Johnstone in the final. July 31 - District 8-A-Side Finals Gordonvale After the three games, South Johnstone finished as winners with a total score of 69 over Edge Hill 48. South Johnstone winners: Fours: Shane McInerney, Tony Burns, Jenny Burns and Cathy Hitchings Women’s Pairs: Louise Hoskins and Anna Rowbotham Men’s Pairs: Kevin Deegan and Kevin Foord South Johnstone will play in the Zone Final on August 25 at Edge Hill, with the winner to play the winner of

the Mount Isa versus Townsville (North Queensland) game. The successful club side from each of the eight Group playoffs will contest the State 8 A-Side Finals held at Tweed Heads Bowls Club from November 3 - 4.

Local boxers crowned champions at the 2022 Golden Gloves Titles MARIA GIRGENTI FOR the first time in a decade, this year’s prestigious Sunstate Amateur Boxing League Golden Gloves Titles took place on the Tablelands hosted by Bryde’s Boxing Gym at Mareeba Turf Club on July 22 - 23, which drew hundreds of patrons over the two days. The action-packed weekend featured stacks of cracking fights with 14 elimination bouts on Friday night, followed by 19 final battles on Saturday. Only one member of Babinda Boxing Club fought, as Kevin Simpson Jnr did not get a match-up in his 15-16 years Junior 67kg division; however, he did receive a gold medal for a walkover. Whilst Simpson did not get a matchup at the Golden Gloves. This did not

mean he earned a walkover for his division and is automatically the Golden Gloves winner for his class. Simpson really wanted to earn it in the ring; however, this proved problematic when no one would step up to fight him, or there was no one for him to step up to. Each week, he always puts the hard yards for the sport he loves, stepping up and fighting older and heavier opponents, so he is well-deserving of the 2022 Golden Gloves title. Sanraj Singh Grewal, aged 13, from Babinda Boxing Club, had a match-up with Kieran Kanters from SAS in the 51kg School Boys Novice Division and secured the win after two stoppages in the second round.

Kevin Simpson from Babinda Boxing Club is the 15 -16 years 67kg Junior Golden Gloves Titles champion.

In the finals, Singh Grewal fought Jake Hine from Hawks Boxing Townsville and won the bout after a second-round stoppage to claim the championship title. He also received the Overall Junior Boxer trophy. Singh Grewal competed at last weekend’s inaugural boxing tournament hosted by Choppy’s Boxing Club at Yarrabah, and he and Simpson are looking to represent Queensland at the State Titles later this year. At Yarrabah, Dakoda Masina, aged 13 from Babinda Boxing Club, who has been training hard for a year, competed in her debut exhibition bout against Trinity Shaw, aged 16 from Hawks Boxing Townsville and did herself proud.

Babinda Boxing Club’s Sanraj Singh Grewal won the Sunstate Queensland School Boys 51kg Novice Class Golden Gloves title.

After not stepping foot in the boxing ring for over six years, Kyle and Brodie Mayocchi from Fusion Fight and Fitness Innisfail made an appearance at the Golden Gloves Titles. In the Intermediate Male 78kg division, Kyle Mayocchi fought Jed Stanford from Shock Boxing over four two-minute rounds and won his elimination bout. In the final, he fought Riley Allan from Old School Boxing but lost the bout via a split decision and finished with a silver medal. With no match-up in his Under 18 division, Brodie Mayocchi stepped up to the Adult 81kg division to gain valuable fight experience. In the final, over four two-minute rounds, he won unanimously over a formidable opponent, Riley Candy from Dreams Boxing. He claimed the 2022 Sunstate Queensland Golden Gloves Adult 81kgs champion. Special guest, ex-Australian Welterweight Champion Harry Grogan, presented medals at the titles. Former world boxing champion Omari Kimweri - ‘Lion Man,’ a triple world and one Australian title holder who represented Tanzania at the 2006 Commonwealth Games also attended.

Local boxers, Kyle Mayocchi, Kevin Simpson and Brodie Mayocchi.

Muriata AS the end of the National Rugby League, 2022 season draws to a close, like my time at KFC and Hungry Jacks, it's time to sift through the major disappointments that kept me up most nights since the Neighbours finale. But, like Guy Pierce's comeback and feel-good ending for the show, I will not be giving our lollies to the teams that failed to aim up, so here goes. First on uncle Larry's hit list is the Gold Coast Titans. Back in 1989, I owned a dog that could sit on a seat while basically talking to me in five different languages, and he still had more belief and talent than this bunch of

I always believe the worst thing to ever come out of Queensland were jellyfishes, but I take that back cause the Titans lead that now. The next team in the firing line would have to be the Newcastle Knights of the Hunter region. I thought the new Zinger burger was a letdown, and then I saw these blokes. With legends like the Johns brothers and the Chief making this club a powerhouse, it's an embarrassing circus show now. Hopefully, they will turn it around. live-action footy. All games were action-packed, and although my Tigers didn't get the chocolates, I will reserve my column for a special mention for a great man. Last Saturday night, Leps legend and club stalwart Robbie Harren got a farewell sendoff befitting the man. As the Tigers players walked off after A grade, an idea flashed before me to grab our players to form a tunnel for the great man. All the players joined in as we set the black and gold jerseys up. No, I'm not looking for any praise or thank yous. Still, I think any football players who give excellent service for a long period of time deserve that reception. In an era where players jump ships almost monthly, here's a player who only wanted to play for his town and give everything, which he did. To Robbie Harren, on behalf of the Tully Rugby League Football Club, fans and former player, mat, well done and thank you for your excellent service to the game.

Innisfail United Football Club’s Under 23 Men’s team wins inaugural championship MARIA GIRGENTI

INNISFAIL United Football Club has created history after their Under 23 Men’s team became Football Queensland’s inaugural Far North & Gulf League Cup champions. Innisfail played Edge Hill in the final at Endeavour Park, Edge Hill, on Saturday, July 30, in a tight contest with the scores

locked up at 1 - 1 at halftime. After full time, both teams finished with a 2 - 2 scoreline, which remained the same after extra time. Innisfail’s goal scorers: Kye Goatham and Kalomarona Taea, Ethan Crossland, Jacob Vecchio, and Fredy Schneiders (penalty shoot-out). For the second time in four years, the game went to a penalty shoot-out with all the pressure on the shoulders of Innisfail’s goalkeeper Elliott Ferguson. Ferguson, who attends Professional Goalkeeper Tuition Academy in Cairns, kept his composure and his clean hands held onto one kick; then, at full stretch, his glove deflected another penalty kick and sealed the thrilling 5 - 3 win for Innisfail. Fishing News

RoLy Newton

FINALLY, we managed a weekend with reasonable boating conditions. All the boat ramp car and trailer parks were full to overflowing as a result of anglers heading out to the reefs and islands for fun and hopefully getting fresh fish on the table. The larger boats that headed out to the main reefs managed reasonable numbers of Coral Trout, Red Throat Emperor and mixed reef fish. The Spanish Mackerel were also around in numbers, with most boats catching 1 or 2 fish by floating baits out in the current behind the boat while bottom fishing. The Large and Small Mouth Nannygai were also around in numbers, with plenty of quality fish caught from the deep water shoals and reefs. Unfortunately, the Bull Sharks were also present in numbers. The Bull Sharks population has exploded over the last ten years, possibly at the expense of other species such as Tigers and Hammerheads. They are definitely more aggressive than the other species, and once they take hooked fish, you have no choice but to move on and hope you can find another school. Over the last week, there have been numerous whale sightings with the massive mammals regularly swimming up to stationary boats and giving delighted anglers a rare close-up encounter. There was even a Whale Shark sighting, a very rare event in our local waters. I have only seen one locally, and that was 30 years ago. Closer in, the rubble patches and contour lines wide of the islands fished reasonably well for Spanish, Spotty and School Mackerel. Not the massive schools of the past; however, most boats were pleased with their efforts. The close-in reefs and islands fished well for Grass Sweetlip, Coral Trout, Striped sea Perch and Gold Spot Cod. There were also reasonable numbers of Spanish and School (Doggy) Mackerel caught around the coastal islands and headlands. Again Bull Sharks were a problem. Most anglers took advantage of the great boating conditions and headed wide; however, a few anglers stayed closer to shore and fished the estuaries. The reports that have come in have been positive, with the numbers of Barra and Mangrove Jacks caught increasing as water temperatures begin to rise. Water temperatures in the coastal creeks are now getting

info@wettropictimes.com.au PO Box 1100, TULLY, 4854 70 Butler Street, TULLY up to around 24 degrees during the day's heat, and switched-on anglers can find pockets of even warmer water. Those bait fishing the estuaries are finding good numbers of Bream, Flathead and a few legal school Grunter. The Grunter numbers should increase in the estuaries in the second half of the month. A few Mud Crabs are still caught in the creeks, and the Blue Swimmers are on the beaches. The fishing in the freshwater reaches of the coastal creeks is still challenging; however, anglers are still managing some Barra, Sooty Grunter and the occasional Jungle Perch by fishing through the heat of the afternoon. At the time of writing this report(early in the week), the forecast is for reasonable wind conditions over this coming weekend; unfortunately, they also forecast light rain, especially on Saturday. Anglers wishing to head out wide will need an up-todate forecast before heading out. Either side of the early morning high tide is perfect for fishing for Grunter in the creeks or along the drop-offs in the Hinchinbrook region. I also like the early morning run in tide to fish for Mangrove Jacks and Barra. Unfortunately, we have a very low tide late in the afternoon, which will cause access problems to many of our coastal creeks and ramps. Boats will have to be out of the water early afternoon or stay on into the evening. Good Fishing Roly Newton Tackle World Tully

Innisfail United Football Club’s Under 23 Men’s team wins inaugural championship - page 22

Innisfail Leprechauns’ A-grade rugby league team defeat Tully in the local derby STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI INNISFAIL Leprechauns’ A-grade rugby league team notched up a convincing 34 - 20 victory over Tully Tigers in the battle of the Cassowary Coast at Callendar Park, Innisfail, last Saturday to claim the Dynamic Timbers Mayor’s Challenge Trophy. It was a fitting end for Innisfail Leprechauns A-grade captain Robert Haren who played his last game at Callendar Park, and both the Innisfail and Tully teams sent him off in style. Innisfail’s try scorers: Jason Hallie, Yaza Stephen, Robert Haren, Pateresio Vota 2 and Daniel Mooka. Sterling AddoNona, 4 goals. Tully’s try scorers: Braithan Ketchell 2, Jonty Ivey and Marika Kuriyalavou. Phil Nona 1 goal and Braithan Ketchell 1 goal. After the game, Leprechauns A-grade coach Leon Hallie said throughout the game that the team had too many errors, which reduced their ability to build pressure. “Mid-way in the second half, we found some rhythm, which enabled us to put on points reasonably quickly and seal the win.” “Like Tully, there were player injuries which proved a challenge.” Innisfail registered a 26 - 12 victory over Tully at full-time in Reserve grade. Innisfail’s try scorers: Boche Satrick 2, Andre Laza, Ethan Vick and Starrison Whaleboat. Michael Morton 3 goals. Tully’s try scorers: Thomas Banu and Gordon James. Luke Fitzgerald 2 goals. Tully Tigers Under 18 team had a gutsy 26 - 22 win against the Leprechauns with thirteen players, no substitutes and Under 16 players backing up from Friday night.

Innisfail’s try scorers: Romeo Taloaina, Mitchell Forrest, Jordeas Aruba and Malachi Donaldson. Cadmas Creed 3 goals. Tully’s try scorers: Morgan Black, Abraham Waireg-Ingui, Jeramiah Callope 2 and Braithan Ketchell. Morgan Black 3 goals. In the Under 15 Girls’ match, Innisfail proved too strong with a 36 - 28 win over Tully. Results - CDRL Round 17 fixtures August 6 - 7 A Grade Douglas
