THE Tully Support Centre (TSC) has successfully received funding under the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. The 2022 Cassowary Coast New Beginnings project will see the TSC partner with MiHaven Training to deliver NO COST nationally recognised Certificate II & III qualifications for 60 disadvantaged learners face to face in Tully. Local businesswoman named as a finalist for National Awards AMY Aquilini, the founder of Aquo Online, has been named a finalist for the Ausmumpreneur Awards in the Disabled Business Excellence and the Women’s Business School categories. The AusMumpreneur Awards presented by The Women’s Business School celebrate and recognize Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The awards are designed to recognize the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family. Amy Aquilini is a Brain Injury survivor who has turned her pain into power to show the world that you can create the life you want to live, regardless of your circumstances. In 2013 she survived a horrific quadbike accident that left her with a Traumatic Brain Injury and limited function in her right arm - but not even that could hold Amy back from her many achievements that she took upon herself to conquer since her life changed forever. Mission Beach town centre funding secured CASSOWARY COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL THE community can celebrate as funding for the Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation project is announced, taking Council one step closer to achieving its total funding goal. Thanks to the Queensland Government’s 2022-24 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP), Council has secured over $3.5 million toward revitalising the Mission Beach Town Centre. Major Project’s portfolio holder, Councillor Nick Pervan, said the timing of the funding announcement is welcome news as Council prepares to release the concept designs of the project to the community and also looks to establish a Community and Stakeholder Reference Group (CSRG). ‘The revitalisation of the Mission Beach Town Centre will deliver a thriving and unique experience that will strengthen the region’s visitor economy, support job growth and enhance the liveability of our coastal town. “The State Governments commitment of funding for this project reduces the burden on Council to deliver this iconic project that will put the Cassowary Coast

and region on the tourist map.

“Council is hopeful that, in addition to the State’s contribution, the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund Round Six will match or improve on the commitment to this project.

“Mission Beach is a growing community and tourist town that has been hit hard by a number of cyclones over the years, which is why this revitalisation project will complement the beautiful attractions of the region.

Cr Pervan said surveyors were on site this week undertaking laser scan surveying of physical buildings and streetscapes in the Porter Promenade and Village Green area, which will be used to finalise design renders for draft concept plans.

Fun at the 2022 Tully Show THERE is always a strong sense of community when the Tully Show comes around. This year’s Tully Show was a spectacular event: There was comedy and sporting action. There were fantastic displays of food and art. Every year Tully is blessed with an impressive fireworks display. There were so many skills on display that the

younger generation needs to make sure they have learnt from their older relatives before they pass. There were friendly family/friend competitions of who could make the better sweets, has the better cattle, and creates the better craft or photography. There is always a lot of talent on display in all sections of the Tully Show. For the last 20 years Lional Marshal from Ingham has enjoyed entering the flower section of the Tully show.

Lional Marshall has won many prizes in the flower section of the Tully Show. He is from Ingham and has been coming to the Tully show for the last twenty years.

Community Invested in Council’s Future Direction RESULTS from the 2022 Cassowary Coast Community Scorecard are out now after 1859 residents ‘joined the conversation’, sharing over one hundred thousand words to guide future priorities. Mayor Mark Nolan said the scorecard has provided an opportunity to hear local residents’ perceptions, allowing Council to evaluate and adjust its service and programs to address community priorities. “As promised the scorecard is being shared with our community in its entirety – The results show we have an invested community who are passionate about the future direction of our region. We value our community’s feedback, we hear you, we are listening and we look forward to the challenge of raising the bar.” Said Cr Nolan. Stats prove Ingham Hospital requires a CT Scanner NICK DAMETTO MP KATTER’S Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and Hinchinbrook MP, Nick Dametto, is demanding the State Labor Government coughs up funding for a computed tomography (CT) scanner for Ingham Hospital following the Minister revealing the high demand.

“This process chews up Queensland Ambulance Service resources and takes healthcare workers off the floor as they are required to stay with the patient while being transferred. “It’s hypocritical that the State Labor Government goes on about their record health budget for

Queensland, and here we are in North Queensland struggling to secure funds for essential, life-saving medical equipment. “Having a CT scanner at Ingham Hospital would not only improve efficiency and save costs in the long run but it would also add to the patient care experience.”

The Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services, Yvette D’Ath, confirmed that the local provider received 392 requests for CT imaging from the Ingham Hospital from January to December 2021. The Hinchinbrook MP believes that 392 CT requests which average more than 30 scans a month, demonstrate a high demand and need to have a CT scanner at Ingham Hospital. “The Minister’s figure excludes CT scans that are referrals from General Practitioners and CT scans that are transferred from Ingham Hospital to Townsville Hospital after hours. So, when you take those scans into consideration, we may be looking at closer to 600 plus CT scans a year for the district,” Mr Dametto said. “When we have such a high demonstrated need for this type of life-saving medical equipment, it should be almost impossible for the Health Minister to deny Ingham Hospital its own fully funded CT scanner. “Currently, if a child playing sport on the weekend has a head injury and sustains a concussion, they’re required to travel from Ingham to Townsville to undergo a CT scan, with current roadworks that can be up to a two-hour drive.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI MOURILYAN State School Parents and Citizens’ Association recently held their eighth annual Bring Your Own Teacup, High Tea fundraiser at Brothers Leagues Club in May, where over 150 ladies enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon of food, wine, prizes and entertainment. Local crooner Mr Sean O’Brien provided the musical entertainment with his vast repertoire of easylistening modern songs and tunes from yesteryear. A stunning photo backdrop supplied by Tracy Yearwood from China & Lace High Tea Hire proved a massive hit among the crowd for happy snaps throughout the afternoon. Event organiser Renee McLeod wanted to thank her committee, sponsors, and all the ladies for their tireless work, especially the mothers who cooked up a storm and provided mouth-watering sweets.

Throughout the afternoon, twentyfour lucky winners took home cent sale prizes, raffles and a lucky door, and a silent auction of various prizes donated by individuals and local businesses. Tracy Yearwood judged the best teacups, with flowers awarded for Most Colourful, Unique, Prettiest and Unusually Shaped categories. This event is a major P&C Association fundraiser with all profits used to purchase updated learning resources/ equipment for students to improve their valuable learning, as well as the costs of school excursions and camps. The P&C is currently running a Monster Raffle with six fantastic prizes up for grabs, including a Kids’ bike, 35L Classic Fridge and Weber Cooker/ Smoker, with the major prize a Quintrex F390 Explorer with 20 Yamaha 4 Stroke Tinnie + safety gear. Tickets are $5 each and are available at the Innisfail monthly markets or by contacting the school. The draw will take place on Saturday, October 22.

Project Update Coconuts Boat Ramp Car Park Upgrade CASSOWARY Coast Regional Council previously notified residents that works associated with the car and trailer parking upgrade at Coconuts boat ramp were scheduled to commence in late June 2022. The project starting date was delayed due to unfavourable weather conditions and to enable the project team to consider and include minor changes to the plans that resulted from community feedback. The construction contractor has provided Council with a new starting date of 1 August 1, 2022, with a planned construction period of about three weeks, weather permitting. Works will be undertaken in stages during daylight hours. Residents are reminded that traffic control will be in place for the duration of the works and that minor delays should be expected while the works are ongoing.

Safer speeds on Innisfail Japoon Road, South Johnstone DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS

THE speed limit on a section of Innisfail Japoon Road in South Johnstone will be reduced to 50km/h. Transport and Main Roads North Queensland Acting Regional Director Kylee Petersen said speed would be reduced between Cheeki Creek Bridge and Hing Street following community feedback. “We have listened to the community and undertaken a speed limit review on Innisfail Japoon Road,” Ms Petersen said. “The change to 50km/h will come into effect before the end of the month and will improve safety on this section of road.” Ms Petersen said the change was endorsed by the Speed Management Committee. “The Speed Management Committee includes representatives from Queensland Police Service, Cassowary Coast Regional Council and, Transport and Main Roads,” she said. “As part of its review, the committee considers a range of factors such as road function, roadside environment, road construction standards, prevailing traffic speeds and crash history.” Ms Petersen said variable message signs would also be positioned in South Johnstone to remind drivers about the speed limits. “I urge all motorists to observe the new speed limit signs and always drive to conditions,” she said. WELL, the Tully show has come and gone and once again, the show cane section was set up and was a popular attraction. A lot of work goes into this part of the show, starting well before the event occurs. Apart from the growers growing the cane which takes up to 12 months, the preparations for the show cane display start several weeks before when Tully Sugar staff from the Civil Engineering Department led by Tim Morey set up the steel frames used to house the display.

Noel Lingard, Ilanah Baston and Sonya Long, plus some grower volunteers this year; Lower Tully grower Don Colls generosity donated his time to help with this process. Once the cane is set up, the judges come through and do their thing, and this year we had a team of judges from the local industry do the job. Another big part of the show cane section is the colouring in by the school children from Prep to year four from the various Primary schools around the region. The colourful displays are set up according to school and class and really add to the show cane displays success on the day. The show cane section is also an opportunity for

organists like SRA to showcase some of the latest information. The Tully show cane section is like a snapshot of the industry, where we all get in and get the job done and put on a display, becoming a major attraction for locals and visitors. On the Friday morning of the show, we had many visitors from interstate coming through with the most common questions relating to how many different types of cane there are and how long the crop grows before harvest. It is always good to be part of something so positive for the region, and a big thank you must go to all involved.

Then a few days before the show, Tully Sugar Cane Supply and Transport Department staff led by Tom Peatey go and collect the cane from the various farms and deliver it to the site. We also process the cane under the “heavy and Sweet” section a few days before the show, which is done through the mobile mill. Once the cane is delivered to the site, a team of people are involved in actually setting up the display according to the various sections to be judged. This team includes all of the TCPSL staff, Peter Sutherland,

SUSAN FAIRBAIRN TULLY AND DISTRICT ORCHID SOCIETY SPECIALIST native Dendrobium grower, Chris Cobb is giving the members and guests of the Tully and District Orchid Society a presentation on growing North Queensland Dendrobiums. Chris started growing orchids in 1987. “My first orchid was a Cooktown orchid and I’m still growing its progeny to this day,” said Chris. He joined Aspley and North Brisbane orchid society and was an original

When Chris moved to Cairns in October 1993, he combined his love of growing orchids and photography and began observing and documenting native orchids in the wild. As well as presenting nationally, Chris has presented to audiences worldwide. In 1999 he was asked to go to the US for a series of lectures and in 2011 he presented at the World Orchid Conference in Singapore.

As well as Dendrobium species he will talk about their naturalised hybrids and advise on their cultivation. Further topics will include information about the discovery of North Queensland’s Dendrobium orchids and their name changes. Chris will be bringing a small collection of orchids for purchase. “We are delighted to have Chris present for us and we invite and welcome any guest visitors, as well as society members to this special free event.” said president of the society, Helen Vincent. The presentation will commence at 1 pm, on 30 July at the Masonic Hall, Murray Street, Tully, followed by afternoon tea and question time with Chris. Soil health workshops with Dr Christine Jones INTERNATIONALLY-RECOGNISED soil and groundcover ecologist Dr Christine Jones is coming to the Far North for workshops with farmers on improving soil health. Terrain NRM is bringing Dr Jones to the region for an ‘Activating Your Soil Microbiome’ workshop in Tully on Tuesday 9 August, and Gulf Savannah NRM will be hosting a ‘Growing Profits by Building Soil’ workshop in Mareeba on 12 August. Terrain agronomist Sally Fields said farmers were welcome from across the industries and regions. “Christine has a way of bringing soil science to the table in ‘farm speak’,’’ she said. “These workshops will be relevant to anyone who manages land. There will be plenty of opportunities for questions the day includes a farm visit and several local farmers sharing their insights into practices that support soil health. “Common threads are building on-farm resilience, with the goal of profitably leaving country in better condition for generations to come.” Sarah Stevens from Gulf Savannah NRM said the skyrocketing price of urea was pushing some growers to ask: ‘Is there a better a way?' “In these workshops, Christine will explain the impact of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous on the soil microbiome, and provide practical actions that commercial producers can take to transition away from a heavy reliance on inorganic fertilisers, to improve productivity and profitability outcomes,’’ she said. Dr Jones has a wealth of experience working with landholders on regenerative land management practices to improve everything from biodiversity and biological activity to carbon sequestering, soil nutrient cycles and water balance. She leads workshops and field days throughout Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Northern and Central America, and has a Community Fellowship Award from Land and Water Australia for her track record working with communities on land, water and vegetation management. Innisfail Ladies Bowls LAST Saturday afternoon, Innisfail Ladies hosted the Weipa Ladies in Pennants for the first time, and Innisfail went down to Weipa in a remarkably close competition. On Wednesday morning, the ladies held their monthly meeting which had good attendance. The AGM will take place on Wednesday, August 17 at 11.30am. Nominations for positions need to be in writing on the official form. Another round of the A-Grade singles played out on Wednesday afternoon where Lyn Stevenson defeated Ann Rule in a see-sawing game. Five Cassowary Coast Chargers players star in winning Queensland Country junior rugby union teams MARIA GIRGENTI EARLIER this month, seven Cassowary Coast Chargers players represented North Queensland at the Queensland Country Rugby Union Championships in Toowoomba, and five went on to represent Queensland Country teams. Denan Anderson, Tyler Addo, Julian Santarossa and Darnel Stagg earned selection in the North Queensland Under 13 team, with Addo and Stagg picked to represent Queensland Country. In Under 14s, Jack Calleja, Regan Ericson, and Miki Toquero represented North Queensland, with Calleja and Toquero selected to represent Queensland Country. Stagg also picked up the Player of the Carnival, an outstanding achievement. Players then braved cold, wet and miserable conditions during the Queensland Country Rugby Union Championships on July 6, played at Gold Park, Toowoomba, for the first time since 2019. The City versus Country junior representative games between Queensland Country Rugby Union and Brisbane Junior Rugby Union saw Under

13 Boys, Under 14 Boys, Under 15 Girls and Under 16 Boys teams in action.

Darnel Stagg kicked the last conversion of the game to seal the victory.

The Cassowary Coast Chargers Junior Rugby Union club and Innisfail Brothers Leagues Club supported the players who travelled to the

trials in Toowoomba with a financial subsidy. The club especially wanted to thank Brothers Leagues Club for their ongoing support in providing local youth with an opportunity to play sports at a higher level. Eight Cassowary Coast Chargers players represented Peninsula's Under 15 Boys' team at the Queensland School Sport 14 - 15 years Rugby Union State Championships in Hervey Bay from July 21 - 24, which featured ten regional teams. The team had a good win and

Finn Dryden, Miki Toquero and Jack Calleja represented Peninsula and earned selection in the Under 15 Regional Queensland team.

Denan Anderson, Darnell Stagg and Tyler Addo starred in the winning Under 13 Queensland Country team.

Country all but secured wins in all four age groups until the City Under 16s slotted a penalty late in their game to claim the victory.

From these championships, Finn Dryden, Miki Toquero and Jack Calleja gained selection in the Under 15 Regional Queensland team to play in the Emerging Reds Cup Academy competition in Brisbane from September 19 - 22.

Coconuts’ Outrigger Canoe Club celebrate 25 years of paddling MARIA GIRGENTI COCONUTS’ Outrigger Canoe Club is celebrating 25 years in 2022 and is holding a reunion paddle and BBQ on Saturday, August 6. A call out for all past and present members to join the party and wear their old club shirts or bring them along to display. The social paddle starts at 3.00 pm, followed by nibbles and BBQ at 4.30 pm (BYO alcohol). These special celebrations continue with a club regatta on August 20, which includes an entire race program and presentation dinner. Please RSVP to Vicki on 0423 640 021. The club's original members included Manuel Ahrens, Allan Jurd, Duncan, Mark Pye and Lesley Tomkinson. The club first only had a Men's crew with Heather Krahenbhuel joining in 1998 as the second

woman, followed soon after by Tracey Gallagher, Tracey Vick, Piedad Valderrama, Ute Holtzrichter and Lauren Viellaris. Paronella Park sponsored the club’s first boat, a very heavy classic with heavy paddles, with Wadda Plantation also a major sponsor. Rob and Greg Worth funded the club’s first racing boat, a Mirage. THE weather conditions over last weekend were marginal. The larger boats managed to travel out to fish the islands and the various mackerel grounds between the coast and the shipping channel. The Mackerel grounds just wide of Dunk island were particularly productive, with most boats reporting good catches of both Spotty and Doggy Mackerel. Excellent yields of Spanish Mackerel have also been reported from around the islands and the close in shoals. A friend of mine has been doing very well around the islands, with most of the Spaniards being around the 1.2-metre size range. Most of these fish are taking trolled ribbonfish or live baits; however, there have also been good numbers caught by high-speed spinning. Lures such as the Arma Metalik or the Samaki Torpedo have been especially effective. The smaller 30 or 40-gram sizes are dynamite on the Spotty and Doggy Mackerel. At the same time, the 50 or 60gram models are the ideal sizes for the Spanish. The smaller Spanish Mackerel we regularly catch from the shipping channel shoals will readily take trolled lures such as the Rapala X-RAP or Halco Laser Pro. It also looks like there are good numbers of small Black Marlin caught between the Shipping Channel and the main reefs. A friend of mine has tagged and released 14 Blacks in the last two months. August is the best month for these game fish, with numbers tapering off through September as they move south. Tagging these fish allows Fisheries to track their movements, with some being recaptured thousands of Kilometres from where they were initially caught. Those fishing the coastal reefs have been catching some quality Coral Trout, Gold Spot Cod and Fingermark. The Grass Sweet Lip numbers seem to have dropped off, but numbers will return a little later in the year as the water warms. Some reasonable Barra and Mangrove Jacks are still being caught in the estuaries. Look for warmer water and schools of bait, especially prawns. I have also found the bite window is concise, an hour on either side of the bottom of the tide. Timing is essential and can be as much as 2 hours after the official change just outside of the river mouths.

Surprisingly there are still reasonable numbers of Mud Crabs in the estuaries and a few reports of Blue Swimmer crabs being caught along the beaches and bays. The freshwater fishing has been challenging, with just a few very keen young fishers managing small numbers of Sooty Grunter and the very occasional Jungle Perch. Looking forward to this weekend, the various weather sites forecast 15 to 20 knots of wind on Saturday, dropping to 10 to 15 knots through Sunday. These conditions are not ideal but may allow the larger boats an opportunity to travel out to the close reefs or to fish for Mackerel around the various Mackerel grounds and islands. The early morning run in the tide will suit those that wish to fish for Barra or Mangrove Jacks in the estuaries. The late afternoon change will also offer an opportunity. I like the larger evening run-in tide to fish for Grunter in the coastal creeks or the Hinchinbrook area. Innisfail judokas impress at the National Judo Championships MARIA GIRGENTI LAST month, six Innisfail Judo Club members competed in the Australian National Judo Championships at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre. They returned home with one gold, two silver and four bronze medals. This year's Nationals was the largest ever, attracting 900 entries. Innisfail judokas, Jonathan De Brincat, Cienna Leaver, Seth Leaver, Coby De Brincat, Riley De Brincat and Luke Magnanini, did themselves, their club and region proud with their efforts, performances and sportsmanship. Riley De Brincat competed in four divisions and came away with a silver medal and two bronze medals, whilst Coby De Brincat competed in three divisions and secured a bronze.

North Queensland judokas from Innisfail, Cairns, Northern Beaches, Coral Coast and Mackay clubs achieved enormous success at the Nationals. These five clubs, which have less than 300 members, achieved eight fifth places and five seventh places—finishing with an impressive haul of 25 medals (eight gold, six silver and 11 bronze). Innisfail Judo Club expressed their appreciation to Ron Neary and the team at Innisfail First National Real Estate, who sponsored Innisfail's Queensland team members so they could travel to the Nationals and club sponsor McDonald's Innisfail for their support. Innisfail will host Round 4 of the North Queensland Regional Series with the Innisfail Open and training camp this Saturday and Sunday at the Innisfail Showgrounds. On Sunday, judokas have an exciting opportunity to participate in a training camp hosted by guest coach Ivica Pavlinic, the current Australian Cadet coach. Pavlinic, is a former Oceania, New Zealand and Australian champion, who had a top ten finish at the World Championships. He is an accredited IJF Level 1 coach, completed the Kodokan coaching course, spent 11 years on the New Zealand National team, and was the former Judo New Zealand head coach.
