Frank Darveniza remembered as one of 88 war heroes of Slav descent AS Australia commemorated ANZAC Day in a very different way this year, it is fitting we pay tribute to one of the forgotten war heroes of World War I, former Innisfail cane farmer Frank (Frano) Darveniza who was one of 88 soldiers of Slav descent who served in Serbia.

In early 2019, Collette Ross, Darveniza's grand-daughter delivered a speech at the Australian War Memorial in the presence of the then Director of Australian War Memorial Dr Brendan Nelson AO. Ross represented the 88 Australian men of Slav heritage who volunteered to fight for the Serbian army on the Salonika Front in WW1 and was part of a delegation of relatives of those who had served in Serbia/Salonika in WW1.

Delegation members were: Margaret Brown, David Bye, Collette Ross, Dr Brendan Nelson AO, Bojan Pajic, Margaret Francis, Kathy Hancock, and HE Mr Miroljub Petrovic, Ambassador of Serbia.

An Unknown Heart in Cardwell

THERE is an unknown connection between the Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration and a mysterious Purple Heart military medal placed at the memorial wall in 2015. The owner of the medal, the history behind the medal and most importantly why the medal was placed at the memorial today remains a mystery and a source of great conjecture for Noelene Byrne.

Noelene Byrne along with co-organiser of the annual commemoration, Anne Mealing would love to find out more about the mysterious tribute.

“I recall during the laying of wreaths in 2015, a young man came forward and placed a small box amongst the wreaths at the wall’, said Noelene.

“He was young, that’s all I can really recall, perhaps in his 20s or 30s.

“He paused for a moment in quiet reflection and moved back into the crowd.

“We never saw him again, and would love to find out more about him.”

The contents of the box were discovered at the conclusion of the day as wreaths were collected along with tributes. Both Noelene and Anne were astonished to discover the contents, a United States Military Purple Heart medal.

The Purple Heart medal is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces in the United States who, whilst serving under competent authority with one of the US Armed Services after April 5 1917, has been wounded or killed.

This medal could have been awarded to a sailor or airman attached to the Battle of the Coral Sea, or perhaps awarded to a service man or woman during World War Two, or the third alternative, the medal belongs to someone wounded or killed during one of the many conflicts since WW2.

Either way, the connection between Cardwell, the Memorial and this Purple Heart remains unknown.

“The young man obviously has some connection with the history of the Battle of the Coral Sea, but what the connection is we don’t know.

“To lay such a valuable item at the memorial wall, it’s very moving. We took

it into safe custody and as a mark of respect we re-lay it each year.

“It would be good to know the story behind the medal and the connection with the memorial.”

“Was the medal awarded to someone involved in the battle? Or perhaps elsewhere during WW2?

“We do not know. We would love to know, this is a mystery to us all, and knowing the connection would add greatly to the celebrations held each year.”

The medal spends its year, in safe custody in Tully, to be brought out each May, polished and placed at the base of the memorial in Cardwell for the duration of the commemoration.

With no serial number engraved on the medal or mintage number the origins and story will remain unknown unless someone comes forward and sheds light upon the mystery.

“It’s humbling to consider that such a valuable family heirloom would be laid in tribute at our memorial here in Cardwell.

I just wish we knew more about the circumstances surrounding the medal.

“But one thing is known, we will always treat this medal with the greatest reverence and respect. Someone died or was wounded and received this medal and we will always respect this and also the gesture of placing the medal at our Memorial.”

The annual Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration was due to occur this Sunday in Cardwell. The battle was fought in 1942 800 kilometres east of Cardwell.

The US Navy lost three ships namely Aircraft Carrier USS Lexington, the destroyer USS Sims and the oiler USS Neosho along with approximately 1000 seamen and airmen.

Frank Darveniza remembered as one of 88 war heroes of Slav descent CONTINUED FROM PG 1

The aim of the meeting was to obtain support from the Australian War Memorial for better recognition of the service of Australians on the Serbian/Salonika Campaign in WW1.

On principle, Nelson agreed for requests for the group to supply photos and narrative on AMW website, memorabilia for AWM collection, a display relating to Serbian campaign in future gallery space at AWM gallery, as well as the long term loan of items in AWM collection for a future public display space in the new Serbian Embassy to be constructed in Canberra.

Darveniza was born in Trnovica, Yugoslavia on November 5, 1898 and migrated with his family to Australia in 1909 just before his 11th birthday.

At the age of 18, Darveniza who was able to speak five dialects had already enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) before he was transferred to the Special Services Battalion.

Five of these men, which included Ross's grandfather Private Frank Darveniza were already enlisted in the AIF and then transferred to Special Services Battalion between 1917 - 1919.

On September 3, 1917 he left Sydney aboard the troopship 'Kyarra' via Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle then onto Salonika and Yugoslavia.

Of the six (only) men who returned to Australia after 1920, the Darveniza's are the only traceable family

of these servicemen in Australia.

Sadly, the solemn promise of Billy Hughes, the Prime Minister at the time to 'look after the men' was not carried out as Mr Darveniza was not recognised as a returned serviceman.

The other 82 men stayed in the newly formed Yugoslavia and were provided with all the benefits that were promised by the Australian government.

Darveniza was not 'brought home' but instead had to fund and make his own way back to Australia which took three years before he returned to Innisfail and bought his own cane farm.

He was never recognised for his service and therefore didn't received a war pension, healthcare, education, employment or housing, nor most importantly remembrance and commemoration.

To make matters worse, Darveniza was suspected a fraud and shunned in his own local community as he could not provide evidence of his war service due to his army records having been lost or misplaced. He was so angry at the treatment he received he threw his service medals into the South Johnstone River.

Life was difficult for Frank, his wife Marica and their family as they had 10 clever children but could only afford to educate six of them.

Yet Darveniza was a man of honour and an outstanding Australian citizen who bought farming land, served his community from 1950 to 1968 on the South Johnstone Co-operative Sugar Mill board of directors,

Canegrowers committee member and member of Cane Prices and Pest Board.

He was also a member of the South Johnstone Ambulance committee for 30 years, Chairman and member of South Johnstone State School Parents and Citizens committee for many years, as well as Patron of Etty Bay Surf Life Saving Club for 10 years.

In 1976, Darveniza was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen's Birthday Awards for his dedicated service and contribution to the South Johnstone community.

Bridges are made for mending and before Frank's passing on September 5, 1989 at the age of 91, the Innisfail RSL allowed Darveniza to take the ANZAC Day salute.

Darveniza's three grandchildren Collette Ross, Donna Curzon and Marica Cunningham and seven great grandchildren were thrilled when Darveniza featured in a story in Queensland RSL magazine in March 2019.

It wasn't until 2018, the year of the Centenary of WW1, these 88 Australian men of Slav heritage who fought on the Salonika battlefront were commemorated at a special ceremony at Australian War Memorial in Canberra, along with all the Australian Army female doctors, nurses, orderlies and ambulance drivers who were volunteers in the Serbian Army which included Olive King from Sydney and famous author Miles Franklin.

Strong ANZAC spirit in Innisfail MARIA GIRGENTI CASSOWARY Coast residents commemorated ANZAC Day very differently this year as traditional dawn services and marches were cancelled throughout Australia due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Many stood on their balconies and at the end of their driveways to take part in Light Up Dawn vigils with candles and displays to honour the sacrifices made by all servicemen, women and volunteers.

Among those were Jase and Amira Braun who wore replica Victory and British War medals of their great great grand-father Albert Harry Lister who was 21 when he went to fight in WW1.

Lister served for four years and three days abroad in WW1 as a light horseman on the 17th Army Service Corps and was discharged on September 8, 1919.

In WW2 Lister, then aged 46 and his mates were is-

sued uniforms and guns but remained on home defence to keep Australia safe.

Meanwhile, the Calleja family honoured family member William Patrick Carroll with a special display, lighting candles and taking part in the driveway service at dawn.

They paused to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the more than 102,000 Australians who have died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, especially those who took part in the landings on Gallipoli in 1915, along with more than two million Australians who have served our nation in uniform since Federation.

The haunting sound of The Last Post was played by bugle on Queensland RSL website and radios, followed by a minutes silence then reciting of The Ode and playing of Reveille.

BIO: OWNER/EDITOR of CCIN. Sari was born and raised in Tully. After she completed a Bachelor of Social Work in Townsville she moved to Sydney for ten years. Whilst in Sydney she worked in Youth homelessness at Youth Off The Streets and completed writing courses with the Sydney Writers Centre. Sari returned to FNQ and with the assistance of her father started CCIN. Ten weeks after starting CCIN she was involved in a very serious car accident; sustaining life-threatening injuries. She unable to work for a number of months and her family helped her through this period.

When she was well enough she returned to running the Newspaper while continuing to overcome her injuries; coping with a traumatic brain injury. She has been lucky to have supportive staff and a supportive community as she continues to go through a difficult time.

Healing the Divide WHEN you go through remembrance times like ANZAC day I feel it is important to acknowledge the challenges faced by the people who have fought to ensure that we are able to exercise our freedom as a nation.

Australia is a very multicultural society and one of the things that we need to make sure we continue to foster as a nation is the ability for individuals

to acknowledge their own culture, to practice it as we continue to fight for our freedom as a nation.

Let’s celebrate each other. Let’s dance without stepping on each other’s toes.

If people still feel that there is a divide than what do they want to see to heal the divide? Australia was birthed out of a lot of sadness. The British brought convicts to settle here when they did not want to come and the Indigenous at that time were subjected to a culture that did not understand them.

It was good to see people lighting up the dawn in remembrance of those that have fought for us.

Let’s keep lighting up the dawn to celebrate our friendships and our futures as we learn, grow, work and play alongside each other. Let our children play together.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Correcting the Inquiry Record AS one of the members of the Green Shirt Movement (GSM) delegation, that accompanied Peter Ridd to Canberra, to secure the Senate Inquiry into the quality of the Reef Regulation science, I feel a little like the child of a divorced couple.

They argue back and forth above our heads, about our welfare, when they could simply ask us !

The argument between the KAP Party and LNP over the usefulness of the Senate Inquiry, looking at the relationship between agriculture and the Reef, belies the deeper AGREEMENT between the two sides. Both LNP and KAP want to make sure that the new draconian Reef Regulations are based on properly quality assured science.

The difference is about how to get the scientific evidence, some of which is obviously highly suspect, properly checked. Ultimately KAP seems to want an Office of Science Quality Assurance (OSQA) to check the evidence. So does the LNP. But KAP wants to just get on with it. For the LNP, it is more complicated because, unlike northerners, most LNP voters in the southeast corner are not aware that there is a problem with the scientific evidence.

The senate Inquiry will be a vehicle whereby it will become obvious that much of the scientific evidence from our science institutions is faulty.

The LNP can then argue forcefully for the implementation of OSQA. KAP claims the Senate Inquiry is a waste of time. It is a useful challenge. The LNP Senators must now make sure they ask the hard questions in the Inquiry. For example, why has the Australian Institute of Marine Science not updated the coral growth data since 2005 while claiming that growth collapsed between 1990 and 2005? Why has JCU’s coral reef centre failed to investigate possible fraud by some of its scientists, despite considerable evidence that it occurred? How does the Marine Park Authority justify claims that pesticides are killing the reef when all the data says presticides are almost always in unmeasurably small quantities?

KAP Need to support this inquiry as it is the only one we have. They need to encourage attendance at the hearings and help in whatever way possible, and not cast doubt. This is NOT about political one upmanship.

If the LNP do not ask the hard questions of our science institutions in the Inquiry, then KAP will be vindicated. If the LNP go in hard, they will prove the value of the Inquiry, and that we need OSQA. GSM is a voice for Rural Regional and Reasonable people, and as such, are about good people and good policy. There is no room for “Party” concerns before “People” concerns.

Nicholas Pervan - Division 4 PETER MCCULLAGH WITH local government flowing through his family blood, newly declared Cassowary Coast Division 4 Councillor Nicholas Pervan is only too aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

Nicholas Pervan, son of the last deputy mayor of the Johnstone Shire Council was declared successful as Division 4s representative last night.

“I love this place, I’ve travelled the world and nothing comes close to the beauty, lifestyle and people of Innisfail and the Cassowary Coast.”

“But we need to change, to move forward, and revitalise the town and region, and people have been asking me for some time now to step up, so here I am, ready and wanting to make a difference.”

“Dad always told me, you have two eyes and two ears and only one mouth for a reason, and I intend to serve my community that way.

“Representing my division and the Cassowary Coast is an honor and I intend to be available in person within the community for anyone to raise any issue as well as contactable by phone at all times.

“To everyone in the Cassowary Coast and all the residents of Division 4, the next 4 years will be a defining time for our region and I intend to work tirelessly for my division and the entire Cassowary Coast.”

Pervan joins Teresa Millwood Division 2, Barry Barnes Division 1, Trudy Tschui Division 3, Jeff Baines Division 5, Kylie Farinelli Division 6 and Mark Nolan as Mayor.

Kylie Farinelli - Division 6 A vision for a stronger and better region PETER MCCULLAGH A great man once stated ‘I have a dream’, for Division 6 Councillor Kylie Farinelli this would be changed to ‘I have a vision’.

This vision is what motivated Kylie to once again contest the recent local government elections and to be successful once more as the councillor for Division 6.

Kylie previously represented Division 6 during the Bill Shannon led council 2012 – 2016.

“I see great potential for this region and with the right leadership team, we can achieve so much here.”

“In December last, when I saw the strength of the mayoral candidates, (Mark Nolan and Bryce MacDonald) I knew we could achieve so much more with one of them leading this council, soi I had to once more be involved.

“My previous experience working within the LGAQ’s Regional Economic Development Advisory Group (RCDG) combined with my background in business and agriculture allows me to see a future that’s positive and strong for our region.

“The potential is here for us to grow the agriculture sector, developing markets and also controlling our destiny more. I see this being very important in the coming term of this council.

“If we can start to work collectively as a region, ignoring the north south tensions and all get on with the job of growing and developing this region from Cardwell to Innisfail we can start to achieved our potential and build a strong positive future for our children.”

Kylie contested the Division along with Ben Heath (incumbent) and strong candidate, CCRC employee Harry Tenni. After a long and stressful three weeks Kylie was declared successful on Saturday.

Council now prepare for the inductions and swearing in of the new council, this Thursday 9am, at the Innisfail Shire Hall.

BREAK AND ENTERS, CASSOWARY COAST: Police are urge residents to lock up after several break and enters over the weekend.

Investigations are continuing into break and enters to houses and vehicles.

Cardwell:

April 24

Between April 12 and April 24, entry was gained through louvres of a Keith Williams Drive address, where two bottles of alcohol were reportedly stolen.

DRUGS LOCATED, WONGALING BEACH:

Between 1pm and 5pm on April 26, entry was gained to a Poinciana Boulevard address. No property was reported as stolen.

Officers executed a search warrant at a Hilda Street address at about 2pm Thursday afternoon.

It will be alleged as a result of that search, a quantity of cannabis, methamphetamines and a number of drug utensils were located.

A 36-year-old local woman was charged with two counts of possessing dangerous drugs and one count of possessing drug utensils and precessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

She is scheduled to appear in Innisfail Magistrates Court on July 27.

DRINK DRIVER, AND DRUG CHARGES WONGALING BEACH: Mission Beach police intercepted a Nissan Patrol for a road side breath test around 10pm Wednesday night.

As a result of the test the 23-year-old local man was transported to Mission Beach station for further testing where it will be alleged, he returned a reading of 0.109 per cent BAC. It will be further alleged he was not the holder of a current drivers licence, and he was in possession of a quantity of cannabis. The registration plates were confiscated for seven days and he was issued with a notice of suspension.

He was charged with drink driving and driving a motor vehicle without a driver licence and possessing a dangerous drug.

He is scheduled to appear in Tully Magistrates Court on July 23.

The passenger in the vehicle also a 23-year-old local man who was given a drug diversion after it will be alleged he was in possession of a water pipe.

Innisfail: At about 2am, attempted entry was made to a Punchard Street address. The offenders were disturbed by the residents and left the scene.

Between 10pm on Sunday night and 4.30am this morning, entry was gained to a Marty Street address.

No property was reported as stolen.

Between 5pm on Saturday afternoon and 10am on Sunday morning, a vehicle parked at an Agnes Street address was entered and a wallet containing a quantity of money was reportedly stolen from inside.

Police want to remind residents to ensure they lock and secure homes and vehicles, and not to leave valuable items in or visible in your vehicles.

• Ensure external doors and windows are locked when you are not at the house or when you are a distance from the property. (Example- being in the back yard or at a neighbour’s house)

A 15-year-old girl is scheduled to appear in the Children’s Court after she was charged with one count of wounding on Tuesday morning.

It will be alleged whilst at a Ryan Street address on Tuesday morning she threw a knife at a girl known to her, striking the girl in the arm and causing a deep laceration.

All three people required medical treatment.

When police arrived and required a breath test, the driver allegedly returned a reading of 0.102 per cent BAC. The man is scheduled to appear in Tully Magistrates Court on July 27, charged with drink driving.

Police have also issued the driver and two female passengers aged 25 and 29 with Infringement Notices for failing to comply with COVID-19 directions.

BREAK AND ENTERS, INNISFAIL: Police have charged three youths after several burglaries in Innisfail over multiple nights, who will all appear in the Innisfail Children’s Court.

It will be alleged that the three youths aged 17, 14 and 12-years-old have attended three different addresses on Punchard Street and two on Marty Street, between 10.30pm Sunday night and 2.30am Saturday morning and attempted to break into the two-story houses.

Police wish to advise all residents to lock their doors and secure windows especially on the upper levels of their homes as entry is being gained through an open or unsecured window on the second floor of residences.

Do not forget to ensure all vehicles are secured and all valuables removed when parked overnight.

Update on Arson - Tait's Family Martial Arts & Johnstone River Heritage Masonic Lodge AROUND 11.00pm on Monday, April 20 a fire broke out and caused extensive damage to the 80 year old Johnstone River Heritage Lodge building on Fitzgerald Esplanade which is also home to Tait's Family Martial Arts.

Last Thursday, Ryan Kater, 27 from Bungalow who was charged with one count of arson, entering premises and committing an indictable offence was released on bail and is due to appear in Innisfail Magistrates Court on July 20.

There has also been significant damage to the floor of iconic Johnstone River Heritage Freemasons Lodge building and members have suffered their biggest setback since Cyclone Larry in 2006.

Masters Chrys and Duane Tait who run Tait's Family Martial Arts lost 32 years of their lives including five National title trophies in Hapkido, three international trophies in Taekwondo photos, computers, martial arts equipment, merchandise, personal effects and children's learning materials etc.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, both instructors were conducting private one-on-one training at the Dojang, as well as online Zoom lessons, but despite this setback the Tait's have vowed to get back on their feet somehow. New Terrain NRM role brings Michael Morta back to ‘Country’ ASK Michael Morta about the Wet Tropics region and he’ll tell you it’s part of his make-up.

The Innisfail resident and Ngadjon-jii traditional owner grew up swimming in creeks from the Atherton Tablelands to Tully and Cardwell, and getting to know the indigenous people in each community as his family moved around the region.

“The Wet Tropics area is a special place for me and I’m passionate about preserving our natural and cultural landscapes,’’ Mr Morta says.

He has recently been appointed as Terrain NRM’s Biodiversity and Indigenous Engagement Coordinator. In this role he’ll be monitoring threatened species and ecological communities across the Wet Tropics region, and he’ll also be working with Wet Tropics traditional owners.

“I’m excited to get back to a role like this where I’m helping to look after Country from the wildlife to management of Country,’’ he said. “An important part of this is keeping traditional owners involved in natural resource processes and management.”

Mr Morta was a trainee indigenous ranger and has since worked as an Aboriginal liaison officer, cultural heritage manager, and marine parks ranger and supervisor among other roles.

As part of the Building Rainforest Resilience project, he will be helping to reduce threats to the endangered southern cassowary, Mabi forest and littoral rainforest. The project involves revegetation work, weed management, habitat protection and finding solutions to cassowary deaths and injuries on roads.

His main role will be working with community groups to measure the differences they are making in improving and extending habitat.

The Building Rainforest Resilience project and the indigenous role are supported by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Mr Morta works on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30am-4:30pm, and on Thursdays

ON Thursday April 23 Mamu Health Service staff, Angela (Registered Nurse)along with Denzel and Roy (Indigenous Health Workers) held a Flu- vacs Clinic in Tully at the Red Cross on Bryant Street. This clinic operated between 10.00am and 4.00pm, seeing a total of 16 clients who received their vaccines. Clients were happy with the vaccinations taking place in a non-clinical environment and waiting times were less and waiting area seating placed apart 1.5m to meet social distancing laws.

St Rita's School South Johnstone forges ahead with learning MARIA GIRGENTI

ST RITA'S School South Johnstone had a positive end to the first term with 85 students and 14 Preps engaged in learning before COVID-19 pandemic changed how education would be conducted in local schools in Term 2.

The year started off well as students settled in quickly to school routines and learning with small classes across the school, so students had access to substantial support in the classroom to cater for different levels of identified needs.

Miss Georgia McBain who hails from Innisfail is the new Year 5/6 teacher and starts her first year of teaching at St Rita's after having completed a Bachelor of Education (Primary).

Principal Greg Hoare said in 2020 there will be a new IT initiative with I-pads for students from Prep to Year 3, while Year 4 - 6 will have Chrome Books (laptops) which means each student will have access to a device.

Home readers have also been purchased which will enable students to take books home as improving reading outcomes across the school is also a key goal this

St Rita's is a faith community which recognises Christ and seeks to live and proclaim his Gospel values. Staff are committed to building strong relationships with families and encouraging parent engagement through their child's education.

During first term, St Rita's school community attended the Opening Mass where school captains, sports house captains and Mini Vinnies committee were inducted and received their badges followed by a morning tea for students, parents and friends.

Two Parent Information evenings were also held, as well as a welcome night for families which provided

an opportunity for parents and students to meet and greet staff and members of the school community.

A Crazy Hair Day was also held where were raised and donated to Bushfire Appeal and students dressed in green for St Patrick's Day as a fundraiser for Caritas Project Compassion Appeal.

On Shrove Tuesday, the Mini Vinnies team cooked up pancakes which they sold to raise money for their Lenten project Caritas Australia.

Karran Burzacott Assistant Principal Religious Education and Leader of Teacher and Learning who started in 2019 will provide school officer support through intervention programs to cater for students with special needs.

Stinger Nets Return To Cassowary Coast Beaches • Stinger nets will be returned to Mission Beach, Etty Bay, Kurrimine Beach and South Mission Beach • All nets will be back in place from 5pm Thursday 30 April 2020.

• Residents urged to continue to practice appropriate social distancing.

A review of the current COVID-19 local risk profile within the Cassowary Coast community and as a result of lessening Qld Government restrictions, will see stinger nets re-installed across the region.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has made arrangements for the nets to be returned to Mission Beach, Etty Bay, Kurrimine Beach and South Mission Beach following their removal prior to the Easter long weekend.

All nets will be back in place by 5pm Thursday 30 April 2020.

Despite the reinstallation of stinger nets Mayor Mark Nolan urged residents to continue to practice appropriate social distancing.

‘Stay at home as much as possible, keep observing the restrictions and keep a distance of 1.5 metres,’ ‘We are all in this together, stay safe and be kind to one another.’

Mayor Nolan also noted that lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers have reported large numbers of jellyfish this season, including the highly venomous box jellyfish.

‘The importance of not entering the water outside the nets, cannot be underestimated.’ he said.

Council will continue to review the situation until the nets are ultimately removed at the end of the stinger season. The end of the stinger season date varies each year based on the prevalence of stingers along the Coast as monitored by Surf Life Saving Queensland.

THE fishing reports that have come through from last weekend were all about the estuaries with reasonable catches of Barra, and Mangrove Jack. The fishing was quite good leading up to Saturday however once the rain started the water muddied in the estuaries as a result of the run off. Best results were from small soft plastics especially the Chase bait and Zerek prawns.

There are plenty of prawns in the estuaries at the moment, so where possible try to match the hatch. Another stand out lure was the Redic Jerkbait, this lure has just recently been released and is a medium depth suspending hard body with a incredible action.

There have also been reports of some nice Grunter and even Fingermark turning up in the coastal creeks.

The mud crabs have also been plentiful however as

normal you do have to find the area in the creek they are frequenting. One ex pro crabber mentioned that this week is the best week of the year for crabbing, so if you need to restock the larder, it should be worth your while to put in a few pots.

At this stage I haven`t heard any reports of large catches of whiting, however they should now be in the creeks in good numbers.

I have not heard too many reports from the Hinchinbrook region just the odd mention of some nice Barra and King Threadfin on lures and Grunter and Fingermark on bait. This is probably a case of most people using closer ramps while the social distancing rules are being enforced.

The freshwater reaches of both the Tully and Murray rivers have been fishing well with good numbers of Barra, Sooty Grunter and Tarpon being caught around the mouth of the feeder creeks and drains. There has even been the odd Jack turning up right up in the middle freshwater reaches of the rivers. Although hard bodied lures have their place most anglers are now

using soft weedless soft plastics in these areas. Both prawn copies and paddle tails work quite well here, try to keep your rod pointing straight down the line and strike hard to obtain the best hook ups. Try to keep as much slack out of the line as possible.

I am writing this report early in the week and at this stage it looks like Thursday will be the best day weather wise. Unfortunately the wind is predicted to start to pick up on Friday and stay windy through the weekend. This will confine most boats to the estuaries. The early morning large run out tide will be ideal to chase grunter in the coastal creeks and in the Hinchinbrook region. Either side of the midday low looks good to go and chase a Barra or a Jack. The other option would be to pump some yabbies and fish for whiting during the afternoon run in tide.

Whatever your preference it will certainly be worth your while to put in a few pots and chase a mud crab.

MARIA GIRGENTI AS a result of social distancing restrictions in place due to COVID-19, Mission Beach Cricket Club will not be holding their annual presentation night this year.

Cricket on the Cassowary Coast was brought to a premature end in mid March when Queensland Cricket advised all remaining junior and senior fixtures for this season were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tully/Mission Beach Level 3 team had an exceptional season making the semi-final against Mareeba where they notched up a win and then played Atherton in the final at Tolga where did themselves proud finishing as runners up in the competition.

The Level 2 team finished the season with a great game against Tully at MARCS Park and all players were congratulated for their great team spirit, effort and excellent attitudes throughout the season.
