Brodie Mayocchi Wins Gold for Second Year in Row at AF BJJ Victorian State Championships MARIA GIRGENTI

LAST month, Brodie Mayocchi won gold for the second consecutive year at the Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Victorian State Championships in the 60kg division at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Nine fighters from Fusion Fight and Fitness Innisfail brought home a swag of medals after competing in the NQ Cup Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament held recently at Edmonton PCYC. Daniel Anderson won double gold in 40kg, while youngest competitor Ryder Mills, aged 7 stepped up a division and won gold and bronze in 25kg.

Cohen Daniel won silver and bronze in 34kg,

while his brother Cody won silver and bronze in 24kg, and Noel Higgins was awarded Male Competitor of the Day. Kyle Mayocchi won gold in adult 83kg; Jake Tabone took home two silver medals in 40-45kg division; Jack Mills claimed gold and bronze in 45kg; Dallas Kassiotes took silver and bronze in 30kg and Sarah Anderson silver in 34kg.

Fusion Fight and Fitness Innisfail are hosting their second Jiu-Jitsu competition on Saturday, June 22 with the NQ Winter Cup at Innisfail Shire Hall.

There will be prize money up for grabs again for junior male and female competitors of the day, as well as adult competitors of the day.

The NQ Summer Cup held last December was a huge success and well supported, which led to the Mayocchi brothers being able to attend Copa Podio in Brazil this year where Brodie became the first ever Orange League world champion in his division against 12 of the most successful competitors from all over the world, while Kyle won his superfight against Brazil’s best green belt.

Both Kyle and Brodie have been invited back to Copa Podio in Brazil for one show in November this year and another two shows in 2020, as well as having been selected in the Australian

UNFORTUNATELY, the bad run of weather has continued with heavy rain falling over the Tully/Mission Beach area over the weekend.

Further south around Cardwell, the showers were lighter and less frequent. It’s amazing as you drive south over the Murray River Bridge, the sky opens up and you enter another world.

A good friend, John Grinstead and I headed down to Cardwell late last week fishing, and although there was rain first up in the morning, once that cleared we had pleasant conditions through the day. Although the fishing was tough we managed three legal Barra and came home with five lovely big, full mud crabs.

I have also heard of some good catches of Barra, Mangrove Jacks, Flathead and river Trevally being caught in the coastal creeks.

Surprisingly, hard bodied lures such as the Jackson Divitis have been out fishing the soft plastics during these tough conditions. What I found last week is, although I was getting more bites on the prawn style soft plastics, I was having problems hooking up. The hard

bodies were hooking up, with the razor-sharp hooks frequently embedded in the side of the face rather than securely in the mouth.

This was a sign of the less than perfect water conditions, making the Barra less aggressive. Bring on some sun.

The whiting have also entered the creeks with good numbers being caught around the edges of the sand bars in the coastal creeks.

The mud crabs have been good, with the crabs being of a good size and very full. Definitely worth the effort.

There has been reports of reasonable numbers of Sooty Grunter and Jungle Perch being caught in the Tully river and its feeder streams.

I am writing this report on Monday, so I can`t give any reports on catches caught during the expected calmer water conditions during the week. However, during the last break in the weather, boats managed to catch a few early-season Spanish Mackerel and there were also a few school Mackerel starting to turn up.

I have heard that the Mackerel have started to turn up in good numbers in the Townsville region, so let’s hope this is a sign of a good season coming up and the boats do well during the week.

Ian McDonald had another solid round of 38 pts & Stephen Todd was close with 37pts. Allan Gould put a great round together of 69 off the stick, to launch the scoring at 41pts & the round to beat!

The afternoon groups struggled in the sunny conditions, something we haven't been used to over the past few months. The best of the afternoon players was our Birthday Boy, John Lombardi at 36pts.

El Arish Golf Report FINALLY, when the taps from above were turned off, we got one comp game in this week. We had an enthusiastic lot of members playing the 4BBB sponsored by QMAC. The course was a little soggy underfoot in some areas, but of course the drains were running nicely, beckoning the little white ball to ‘enter’.

Winners on the day with a great score of 44 was the team of Gavin Camilleri and Kelly Cavallaro, followed closely by the team of Marie Pavan and Jan Benn on 42. NTP Men’s on 2/11 taken by Jake Perkins with Marie Pavan taking the Ladies on 5/14.

A big couple of weeks ahead with the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS being played which is a 72-hole Single Stroke event. Saturday, June 1 is our Monthly Medal Stroke event sponsored by Innisfail Brothers Leagues Club, also being the first 18 of the Championship, followed by Sunday, June 2 being Secretary’s Trophy Day, which is the second round. The following Saturday, June 8, is the Captain’s Trophy day, being the third round of the Championship, followed by Sunday, June 9, the President’s Trophy day and the final for the 72-hole Championship.

Fingers crossed we have no more cancellations due to the weather – every one play well and mostly enjoy your games.

At this early stage of the week the weather sites are predicting 20 to 25 knots of wind on Saturday. However these conditions will hopefully ease on Sunday, and although there is 15 to 20 knots predicted out wide there is a thin band of 10 knots close in along the coast showing up on the chart. With any luck, this may allow boats to fish around the headlands and close in islands next Sunday.

Either side of the early morning high tide will be perfect to fish for grunter in both the coastal creeks and along the edges of the flats in the Hinchinbrook region. Either side of the early afternoon low tide will suit fishing for Barra and Jacks in the creeks or Hinchinbrook channel. Another option would be to pump some yabbies and to fish for whiting during the first of the incoming tide.

I just had a customer who was fishing with local fishing guide Dave Bradley come in to the shop and mention he caught eight Barra on fly yesterday. He was using surface flies, very good going during these conditions.

The afternoon low tide will cause some ramp access problems this weekend. Skippers will have to take this into account when planning a trip.

Next on course was Sporters 9-hole stableford and having the win was Reg Wright 21 pts, second Sneza Lazarus 20 pts on a count back from Giff Pershouse, then Andrew Herbertson 19, Frank Grimes 18 and Ian Burchell also 18 pts. NTPs were Sneza, Phil Pentecost and Kevin Brown.

Innisfail District Teams Dominate with Clean Sweep MARIA GIRGENTI INNISFAIL District have had a clean sweep by winning in all six grades at the inaugural NQ Country Junior Rugby League Championships held recently in Atherton.

The 13, 14, 15, 16 year old boys as well as 14 and 16 year old girls brought home six new shields which will have their names engraved on the first plaques.

Innisfail District were up against Eacham, Cape and Torres (known as NQ United) and Mount Isa, and the event attracted over 400 junior players.

Innisfail dominated despite some tough competition from Mount Isa's Under-13s boys, Cape Torres Under-16s girls and

Eacham Under-16s boys who pushed them all the way.

On top of all the district teams’ success, three individuals were named players of the carnival with Braithan Ketchell in Under-14s winning the Chris Waters medal; Jeramiah Callope in Under-15s winning the Dale Crear medal and Brooke Tongalea in Under-16s girls winning the Leanne Thomas medal.

A total of 51 players across all age groups were also selected in the NQ Country teams to compete at the Marlins Championships in Townsville next month.

Innisfail District Junior Rugby League President, Ben Thomson, said the teams had a very good preparation by starting the process early and worked very hard to be well organised.

The NQ Country Championships is an exciting new initiative from QRL that allows more junior players to experience a representative level of junior league.

Two Country Development days were run in Innisfail and Tully in March followed by trial matches where district teams and coaching staff were selected.

Mr Thomson said all teams were outstanding, however he felt they were a bit better prepared than the other teams, so reaped the rewards.

Mr Thomson congratulated all the players who participated and represented the district so well, with a special thanks to Innisfail Brothers and Tully Junior rugby league clubs for supporting the representative pathways and processes for their

players.

"Everyone played their hearts out but most importantly behaviour on and off the field throughout the championships was outstanding which is what we expect from our Innisfail district junior league players."

He said the team's philosophy is being a good person first and good player second, which is ingrained in the kids, and how these life lessons carry on into adulthood, such as being organised when they come to training.

Mr Thomson extended a massive thanks to the 26 volunteer coaching staff who prepared and managed the teams over the last two months, as well as parents and supporters.

clubs and what we have achieved together as a district is truly amazing."

From these championships, the NQ Country sides were selected and will now go into a two-day training camp from June 6 - 7 before the NQ Championships on June 8 - 9 in Townsville where they will go up against teams from Cairns, Mackay, Townsville and Northern Territory.

Mr Thomson especially wished to thank all the sponsors for their generous financial assistance to help the juniors compete.

Next year, Innisfail will host the NQ Championships at Callendar Park, where all six teams will defend their titles.

Wednesday May 22, the clouds cleared and the rain stopped so we enjoyed playing the jackpot pairs. Winners on the day were John Evans and Rita Pezzutto. They won a free drink, the jackpot did not go off, so next week it will be $150.00.

No bowls on Sunday May 26. Why? Too much rain!

A game of club championship pairs is scheduled for Friday May 31: Ray Wicks and Val Zamora against Ian Revie and Claire Bourke.

After the washout of the previous week 30 bowlers arrived on Thursday to make up for lost time. The afternoon started off well but just before the end of the first game, the heavens opened and put paid to bowls for the day. T. Burns, D. Lowe, & J. O’Brien were declared the winners. The 20 bowlers who showed up on Saturday had much better weather and enjoyed the afternoon of social bowls. One game of competition was played on Friday when G. Goes defeated G. Edgerton in the “A” Grade Singles.

The District Pennants competition resumes on Saturday with both divisions playing in Innisfail at 1.00pm. There will be room for one rink of social bowls. Social bowls Friday night saw eight bowlers take to the green for two games of pairs with winners on the night being D Perry and S Harris. Sunday social saw P Longford and T Kerrigan defeat A Holder and D Holdsworth.

The Men’s Pairs Final saw Kel Albert with Michael Hooker defeat Tony Burns and Dave Leach 20-19 in a match that went into an extra end. The Men’s Fours final is being played this Sunday morning between Deegan’s team and McCarthy’s team.

Unfortunately, due to rain there were no bowling activities at Silkwood all week.

Tropical Coast District Veteran Golfers Association IN overcast and very windy conditions, 26 players competed in the Tropical Vets’ stableford event in Cardwell last Tuesday.

The course was in excellent condition, and some players took advantage of this to record some good scores.

Winner of the men’s competition was Cardwell’s Mick de Vries with a fine

Tigers News with Shane Muriata WHEN scaling the mountain outside Gordonvale to enter the paradise that is Yarrabah, it’s hard to think that a CDRL team even exist in such a beautiful spot. Being the 2017 premiers, the Seahawks still hold onto the fact that a team full of players who literally play for nothing are their idols and they still made Sunday’s game as passionate as any other games we will attend this year. Signs were already looking a little dim when our reserve grade coach, Steven Barrett, was scratching for players before kick-off, and showing his disappointment at not having a full team to play an important game. If you

think for one minute that would be the attitude that these boys would show all game, then think again. Being down 30- 4 in the first half would’ve sent any team packing, but not this one. As the break came and went, Barrett’s men would score four unanswered tries to bring the game back within striking distance of an unlikely victory. “We started with two players on the bench and finished with no one. Addsy breaking his collarbone didn’t help, so hopefully he has a speedy recovery.” Pauly Ketchell was outstanding, taking best on ground honours, with Jonty Ivey and Origin Hooker Seppi Anderson also in the mix for game two. I must make a special mention to Barrett’s parents for making the trek up north, as

they were hands on in every part of the game. It’s good having help around whenever times look a little tough when you’re coaching, but even better when mum and dad are there to lend a hand. How do I know, well, I brought my dad along to buy me KFC. As the main game drew closer, a feeling of readiness came over the players as they knew the importance of the game against the community club the Yarrabah Seahawks.

With a team boasting some exceptional talent in 2019: Foley Shield skipper Milton Mossman, Ex Cowboys Hezron Murgha; it was always going to be a tough assignment knocking them over at Jilara Oval.

The game started fast, and the closeness of the match had everyone on the edge of their seats. The Tigers would score a great try through our go-to man, centre Phil Nona, but the Yarry side just kept on coming back.

They then pushed out to a sizable lead until the Tigers made a last dash for victory through a few tries to get within six point. It was enough to make anyone nervous, even more so the head coach Tongy: “It was too messy for us. We couldn’t find a knockout punch, and that loss hurts us. I’m still proud of that effort, so we just have to reset and start again next week against an inform Mareeba Gladiator outfit.” Tigers captain Fabian Tauli was adamant that we leave it too late to make a fight to win the game: “We started to come good later in the game, and that makes chasing the lead harder.” As our playing stock took a hammering during the week through injury, an old friend answered an SOS in the form of one cricket champion, Brenton Edwards. It was a welcome sight to see the old bugger go again, as he didn’t look out of place or even missing beat when the game came

to the crunch. From cleaning the streets to cleaning the footy shoes, we hope this wasn’t the last time got to see B Edwards.

Our attention now moves towards Mareeba at home this Saturday, where another tough game awaits us. Hopefully, our season is ready to turn around this weekend.

So the State of Origin teams have been announced for both states, with NSW and Qld balancing current form while still showing faith in the guys who got the job done last time.

Queensland will go into the 2019 series for the first time in 13 years without a single player from the 2006 series, which included the likes of Thurston, Smith, Cronk, Inglis and the great Billy Slater. When you look at this NSW side, I can’t help but feel unsure about our chances. Cody Walker has been the form player of the NRL, Tedesco hasn’t missed a beat and Damien Cook just keeps get-

ting better. If we are to wrestle back the shield for the Sunshine State, theres a couple of names that could swing this interstate clash back to us. First and formost, Kaylin Ponga is the reason we still stand a chance. He will hold the key to if we win or if we get hammered. Ben Hunt in at 9 gives us something different to the Blues hooker, because he has a little more variety. The positions I feel happier about were the forwards, who look like a monster pack that should overshadow Klemmer and Co. Cherry Evans was the logical choice as our skipper, but it’s one thing being named as captained, and another to lead. I really hope it’s the latter.

One thing that will be certain and it’s that this State of Origin series will be one of the biggest in recent memory, and I hope it’s one us Queenslanders will remember for a while. Go Qld!!

Innisfail Leprechauns Defeat Ivanhoes Knights in Tight Affair MARIA GIRGENTI IN Round 7 of CDRL action, Innisfail returned home to Callendar Park on Saturday where they hosted Ivanhoes Knights in four games.

Elia Mooka made his debut for Innisfail in the A grade game, which saw the home side slog out a 24-18 victory over Ivanhoes.

Innisfail scored the first two tries through Timothy Ambrum and halfback Jordan Biondi-Odo, before Ivanhoes struck back with two tries of their own

to claim a two-point lead at halftime.

Although Ivanhoes scored first in the second half and increased their lead to eight, a determined Innisfail fought back with tries to centre Ben Reuter, captain Robbie Haren, and George Toby to claim back the lead and hang on for a win.

Innisfail coach Leon Hallie said it was a good game that reflected the evenness of the competition.

"We were able to get the win by sticking to our plan for 80 minutes. All the boys played

well and there were solid performances from a majority of the team.

"Unfortunately, Tamati Huirama has injured his knee again but we're all hoping it’s not too serious.

"Suburbs will be another tough game who play a similar style of footy to Ivanhoes by hanging in for the whole game, so it will be a big challenge again for the boys," said Hallie.

The Reserve game was also a close tussle with Innisfail eventually running out 22-16 winners over Ivanhoes.

Two tries to Charlie Wosomo and a try to Ben Wilson for Innisfail and one try to Ivanhoes put the home side with a 14-6 lead at the break.

Two quick tries to Ivanhoes in the second half saw them take a two-point lead before a try to Kieran Nowlan and Andre Laza for Innisfail in the final minutes all but sealed victory for the home side.

It was a tight contest in the Under 18s game which ended in a thrilling 26-all draw after the Knights were leading by two at halftime.

In a see-sawing affair, Innisfail posted the first try in the second half through Mason Anau to take a slim two-point lead, but the lead changed back to the opposition when Matthew Dooley converted his own try.

Scores were locked at 20-all when Mason Anau crossed over for his second try. and a successful conversion by Rhaymus Tomarra put the Leprechauns back in front with just over 10 minutes left on the clock.

The lead swung back to Innisfail when Zane Walsh

scored in the final minutes until Ivanhoes Brendan Turi went over for his second try and then, added extras levelled the scores just before full time.

A double to Ashley Marshall helped steer Innisfail to a 4-0 victory against Ivanhoes in the Women's NRL touch game, with Khiane Henderson and Alex Ambrum also chipping in with one try each.

On Sunday, Innisfail will travel away to Alley Park, Gordonvale for a clash with Southern Suburbs.
