Tully State School Cross Country LAST Friday Tully State School held their annual cross country event.

Walter Hill was the house victors on the day with all of the students showing great participation and sportsmanship. Age Champions on the day were: 7 Yr old – Yasmin & Tyler 8 Yr old – Isabelle & Marshall 9 Yr old – Bailee & Tyrell 10 yr old – Kahtahnya & Ben 11 yr old – Iedithsha & Shakobe 12 yr old – Daniel & Mikayla.

The top 3 place getters have now been invited to attend the Cassowary Coast District Cross Country to be held on Thursday, 9 May in Innisfail.

Mourilyan State School Preps Easter Hat Parade

Teacher Emily Enright, teacher aide Renee Aldridge and Prep students from Mourilyan State School got into the spirit of Easter with their specially made and colourful Easter Hats parade which were paraded in front of staff, family and friends. Students also took part in traditional egg and spoon races and the popular morning finished with the ever popular chicken dance which included a special dance to include staff, parents and family members.

Mourilyan State School Honours Fallen Soldiers at ANZAC Ceremony MARIA GIRGENTI

A LARGE crowd gathered for the special ANZAC ceremony at Mourilyan State School last Wednesday to pay tribute to all the courageous Australians who fought and died in war and to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing where 2,000 ANZACS were killed or wounded and over the next eight months. More than 11,400 Australian and New Zealand soldiers died and 24,500 were wounded.

After presentations by students and school choir singing, the ceremony concluded with the recitation of the ‘Ode of Remembrance,’

playing of the ‘The Last Post’ on clarinet by James Wedgwood from Innisfail State College, a minute’s silence, playing of ‘The Rouse’ followed by the laying of wreaths and the singing of the Australian National Anthem while the flags were being raised.

The school especially wished to thank all those who attended particularly special guests Member for Hill Shane Knuth, Allan Scott, Private Summers from 51st Battalion FNQ Regiment, musician James Wedgwood, parents, school leaders and Mrs Hunt.

Innisfail State School ANZAC Commemoration MARIA GIRGENTI

INNISFAIL State School held a special ANZAC commemoration last Tuesday to pay tribute to all the gallant Australians who served, those who died in war and to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Special guests on the day were Mayor John Kremastos, Councillors Mark Nolan, Jeff Baines and Ben Heath, Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, Craig Strutt from Innisfail RSL and Scott Carpenter returned air service man who served in the Middle East in 2009.

After an introduction by Principal Tania Kaitara, a special ‘In Flander’s Fields’ video presentation by Innisfail State School staff and students was shown.

A special prayer was offered up by Katrina Carpenter

which spoke about remembering those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in time of war and that the offering of their lives may not have been vain. This was followed by a poem for ANZAC Day, which was read by students.

The Commemorative Address was delivered by Craig Strutt from Innisfail RSL and wreaths were laid by selected students in all grades, along with special guests, and one of the students read the ‘Ode of Remembrance.’

The ceremony at the school concluded with the playing of the ‘The Last Post’, a minute’s silence, ‘The Rouse’, and the singing of the Australian National Anthem.

Guests and staff then enjoyed afternoon tea and home-made ANZAC biscuits baked by Mrs Carpenter.

South Johnstone State School ANZAC Ceremony MARIA GIRGENTI SOUTH Johnstone State school held an ANZAC ceremony last Wednesday to commemorate all those fallen soldiers, past and current serving defence personnel.

The service was attended by staff, students, parents and special guests, Innisfail RSL Sub branch President Bill Dray and members of the Silkwood/Kurrimine Beach Red Cross branch.

Students sang ‘Flanders Fields’ and Bill Dray said he was impressed with the new plaque attached to the wall in the school garden which features 51 names of veterans who attended South Johnstone State School and that it was an amazing tribute to those soldiers.

Students, staff and parents from South Johnstone State School showed their ANZAC spirit when they took part in the Innisfail ANZAC Day procession last Thursday.
