North Queensland Sports Fishing Championships All the participants of the championships on the awards on the evening of May 5.

SARI HYYTINEN THE Hinchinbrook Sports Fishing club from Halifax are continually making improvements to the North Queensland Sports Fishing Championships. There was a good turnout for the three-day competition which started Friday May 3. More than 100 people attended the Halifax community hall to see who had won in the different sections. There were 92 angler nominations and of that, there were strong proportions of junior as 20 of the participants were in the junior age bracket. There was a ratio SARI of HYYTINEN 60/40 for the Male/Female participation. Children as young as three participated. Sports fishing clubs are encouraging people of all ages and genders to get involved in the local clubs.

“We have a pretty unique formula; or what we consider a unique formula. The event itself we have turned into a catch-and-release event.

It is optional to catch and release.

More than three quarters of our fish will come in by photo,” said Adam Royle president of the Hinchinbrook Sports Fishing Club who currently coordinates for the North Queensland Sports Fishing Championships.

Younger participants are able to participate because there are

200 species that they can target, and it is not limited to a species that requires going out into the ocean to be able to compete.

Kids come along, they go fishing with their Mums, Dads, aunties, uncles, and grandparents as they go out fishing or they are able to go to their local river and put out a line.

The event has looked at the most effective way to enable younger people to become involved. “But because there’s such a range that they can target to get involved. Almost any fish in this region (apart from sharks and rays which are known as the vermin), but anything else is on the cards,” said Royle.

The club has ensured that juniors are able to walk away with an encouragement award for their participation. The event has a more than a 30-year history, but unfortunately it was receiving poor participation. After taking over the event three years ago, the Hinchinbook Sports Fishing Club has seen vast improvements in participation. The goal is to ensure the strong junior participation continues and continue with a sustainable structure to their competition, which is why they started the catch and release, but are happy to keep this optional for participants.

UNFORTUNATELY, the windy weather conditions meant that trips out to the main reefs were out of the question over the past week.

However, it was possible to travel out to the Family Group of Islands. Conditions were marginal, but there were some good fish caught with some early season Spanish Mackerel starting to turn up. The Spaniards were mainly loners in the 8-15 kg weight range. Most of the hook-ups were on trolled ribbon fish or live bait, however there were a few fish hooked while jigging the various structures for other species.

There has been a few Grey Mackerel and Fingermark around and I expect the school Mackerel should start to turn up over the next few weeks.

The Doggies or Schoolies start turning up in late May and can be targeted around close inshore structure by both trolling, jigging or drifting and floating pilchards. A method that I find super effective is to slow-troll pilchards.

You can make your own rigs up or simply use a weighted jig head with two ganged hooks behind it. The advantage of this method is that

you can cover a lot more country and you are legally allowed to use more than one line in a yellow zone. Pull into the shop, and the staff can explain the simple rigging methods that I use.

The estuaries fished reasonably well over the weekend with some good Barra and Mangrove Jacks caught in the coastal creeks and Hinchinbrook area. As discussed last week the various shrimp style soft plastics seem to be doing extremely well as there are heaps of prawns around the shallow mud banks and drains. Although I haven’t heard of big numbers, there has been some nice grunter, flathead and bream caught both on bait and by using slowly retrieved soft plastics. The trick with catching grunter and flathead on lures is to use a prawn or small paddle tail soft plastic and to keep the lure close to the bottom and use plenty of pauses. It’s absolutely amazing how many of these two species I have been catching on lures over the last couple of years.

The 18-hole stableford at Cardwell golf last Thursday was won by Sneza Lazarus with 31 pts. Second was Jackie Olditch and third, Anne Jodrell.

NTP was won by Betty Taylor.

Sporters 9-hole event had Ian Ingram coming in the winner with 19 pts on a count back from Peter Topen also 19 pts. The run down went to Sneza Lazarus and Phil Wyatt, NTPs were Phil Wyatt and Rowly Mott.

Saturday a 4-person multiplier was played and the winners were Heath Sampson and Phil Wyatt, second Jackie Olditch and Tex Morton and in third place, Kevin Martin and Greg Smith. NTPs were Ian Ingram, Greg Dearlove, Jackie Olditch and Terry Moss.

Thursday will be an 18-hole event, register at 9:00am for 9:30am tee off and Sporters 9-hole stableford, register 12:30pm. and tee off from 12.45.pm.

Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th May will be the 2019 Cardwell Open, which will be a 36-hole stroke event, Ladies division is A, B, and C-grade and for the men A, B, C and D (encouragement grade). Prizes for Saturday and Sunday plus overall. Also, prizes for daily net, NTPs, and longest drives for both Ladies and Men. Cost for the two days is $60.00, which includes lunch. Timesheets will be posted on the board at the clubhouse plus the website and Facebook. A very big thank you to the sponsors of the weekend go to Townsville and Cairns "Golf World".

prime bait and the whole trip from catching the bait to catching the whiting can be a lot of fun for the whole family.

The mud crabs were scarce during a day trip I did last week in the hull.

However, I suspect I should have left the pots in as the main run in the tide was over night.

The cooler conditions have not had a dramatic effect on the fishing in the fresh water reaches of the coastal rivers as yet.

During a short three-hour canoe trip over the weekend we managed to catch and release twenty odd sooty Grunter and a couple of small Jungle Perch. I also heard of some boats still managing to catch some Barra around the drains and back waters. However, the majority of these fish will move down to the mouth over the next few weeks.

At this early stage of the week, the weather forecast is for 15 to 20 knots of wind over this weekend. However, we do have the cyclone as a wild card to deal with. Either side of the early morning high tide will be perfect to fish for grunter around the edges of the sand bars in the coastal creeks. Either side of the mid-afternoon low tide will be best to chase Barra and Jacks in the creeks.

This same low tide will also be perfect to pump yabbies and then chase whiting on the afternoon incoming tide. This low tide will result in access problems at the mouth of the various creeks, so plan your trips accordingly.

Bowls This Week Innisfail Bowls

On Thursday, 27 players lined up for social bowls. Winners on the day were G.Edgerton, M.Achello, Wazza, G.Steve. On Saturday it was good to see 14 players despite the start of the pennant season. Talking of pennants, Innisfail had a good weekend with Division 3 defeating Silkwood on Saturday, and the Mixed Pennants team having a resounding victory on Sunday.

Results of Club Competition during the week: “A” Singles ; G.Goes defeated T.Curran in a closely fought game. Pairs; ; G.Goes, L.Fedalto defeated A.Morrison, G.Kirkman.

Pennants gets into full swing next weekend with both 1st and 3rd Division playing away.

Division 1 plays West Cairns at 9:00am at West Cairns and in the afternoon plays Brothers/ Edmonton at Edmonton.

South Johnstone Bowls

Friday night bowls held on the May 10 saw 12 bowlers take to the green with winners on the night being Sam Campbell, Samantha Harris and Tyler Edgerton.

Saturday, May 11, 3rd Division travelled to Tully for their first match of the season which was a hard-fought battle which ended in a 40-point draw. 3rd Division have a home game against Silkwood this Saturday the 18th starting at 1pm squad is A Holder, K Villalba, F Caltabiano, T Kerrigan, T Edgerton, S Ollson, P Longford and W Kriesel.

1st division will travel away this Saturday, May 18 to play Edmonton Brothers at Edmonton at 9:00am and then will travel to West Cairns for a 1:00pm game. The squad is S McInerney, A Hansen, R McCarthy, J Zaini, K Deegan, T Burns, S Raciti, K Albert, I Fisher, M Roots, D Leach and M Hooker.

Sunday, May 12, the Mixed pennants team went to Yungaburra to play Atherton and came home with 42 - 39 win. The mixed team will travel to Gordonvale this Sunday, May 19. Team will be advised.

Silkwood bowls

Wednesday, May 8 Social games: Many players had other bowling commitments, but we still managed to find six bowlers.

May 11 The beginning of the 2019 Division 3 Pennants Round 1 is on its way. Silkwood entered with2 teams playing in Innisfail against Innisfail. Unfortunately, both Silkwood teams lost.

Round 2 is on May 18 and will be played at Silkwood.

May 12 The 2019 TFNQ Mixed Pennants Section1 is underway as well.Two teams from Silkwood surrendered to Innisfail. Congratulations Innisfail.

As always Friday Night Barefoot Bowls it’s enormous fun. Come along and try our bowls game. Bowls are provided, all are welcome. We start with a BBQ at 6:00pm followed by a game of bowls and ending with a cuppa and some yummies.

May 7, two of our ladies Val Zamora and Bev Achilles played in the FNQ walking pairs competition at South Johnstone, they returned again for the final on May 8.

Saturday, May 11, two Tully teams Ian Revie(skip), Ray Wicks, John Brown, & Lino Ceccato played the second team, Steve Szabo(skip) John Taylor, Ray Downing & Rod Bradley.

They played South Johnstone in Tully in the division three pennants competition.

The results were both teams drew with South Johnston.

May 12, two teams travelled to Innisfail to play Babinda in the Mixed Pennants. Team one consisted of Ian Revie, Val Bradley, Rod Bradley & Betty Corcoran, team two were John Brown, Margaret Fanna, Molly Dunn & Ray Downing. Tigers News with Shane Muriata EVERY year the road trip to Mossman gets further, and as I completed my 15th pilgrimage to the north for a bit of footy action with my beloved Tully Tigers, the game itself for all of the grades were nothing short of controversy. With Pappy constantly talking to the bus driver and interrupting my sleep, we arrived nice and late for the women’s game that was scheduled for five minutes after we arrived. It wasn’t an ideal preparation, with coach mamma Jo having no bench to work with while the opposition had enough for five teams. “We stayed with them, just couldn’t get over them. We kept them scoreless until the final 10 minutes, where they end up winning 2-0,” stated Coach Davis.

With the home game coming up against arch rival Innisfail this Saturday, captain Rebecca Davis had only one message: “We need our players to turn up to training”. One of the coolest scenes took place last week at

the girls training: the return of the great Brenda Morice, who does not look a day over 25.

Her playing this weekend will be worth the admission price alone, so get on down early and yell out her name very loud when she scores four tries.

As the Reserve Grade game rolled around, playing stocks looked very short for coach Steven Barrett. With only one player on the bench for the clash, we were unlucky to go down in the last five minutes due to some poor officiating “I’m just impressed by the way we didn’t lose our cool. We only had 13 players, and that reffing was not up to the competitions standard. It’s only our second loss for the season, so it’s not panic station yet.” In a surprise twist, Coach Barrett confided in yours truly after the game by pointing out some BS moments that he didn’t think his side deserved. I actually liked that a coach cares enough to vent his opinion, whether it’s

good or bad. It doesn’t show his anger in any way, but a side of him that says, “If you screw with my team, I will come after you.” That’s what leaders do.

Keep up the great work Barrett.

The Force is strong in this one.

If you thought the women’s and Reggies game had some crazy storylines that usually feature on Days of our Lives, then the A grade game added to an already eventful day. As the players went out to get ready to play, word had reached us that the referees were caught up on the ranges’ traffic lights.

After making it to the grounds and combing his hair, the game got under way for some fast footy. To say they were fast is an understatement because this Mossman team proved too fast for our Tigers when they romped home 52-28. After skipping away to a 36- 4 lead at half time, head coach Tongy asked for some belief, and boy did they show it. Tully scored four tries in 15 minutes to be back within striking distance, only for the Sharks to score another three tries to extinguish any chance of a comeback.

ON Saturday, Innisfail United U13/14s 2nd Division team showed great defence and goalkeeping in an action-packed game to register a convincing 8-1 win over Edge Hill Blue in Cairns.

The Premier Reserves game to be played between Innisfail United and JCU Strikers in Atherton on Sunday was forfeited by JCU Strikers.

Innisfail United Under 13/14s 1st Division team went down 5-3 against Stratford Dolphins White, one of the top teams in the competition in Cairns on Saturday. The side struggled to field players with two out and another four unable to play due to illness, so it was a great display of gritty courage and discipline from the group of young men and Sophie Barnes.

Despite going down by 4-0 to Mareeba United in Cairns on Saturday, Innisfail United Under 13/14 girls put in an awesome effort. Innisfail’s goal scorers were Maeve Lowe and Phoebe Jamieson.

This was the first game together for the girls as a team, and they are shaping up to be a unit that is going to do well in future games.

Local Muay Thai Fighter Quinton Smith to Battle It out MARIA GIRGENTI LOCAL Muay Thai fighter Quinton Smith will enter the ring and go to battle against Kane Singleton from Brisbane in his first World Boxing Council (WBC) Queensland Under 18s Lightweight title fight on May 18 at Cleveland Showground Stadium.

Smith was locked into the fight after he received a call from the promoter who asked if he would like to challenge the Under 18s title, and this is only the third time a WBC title has been offered in Australia since they opened in the early 1990s.

The fight is being touted as one of the best WBC match ups of the night as two of Queensland’s rising stars and best fighters in Australia go head to head with both having the same record with 25 fights, 20 wins and five losses.

Smith, who has just turned 16 will be stepping up a weight division to 61.3kg division when he takes on Singleton, aged 15 who is a State and Australian champion and also a junior Muay Thai world champion after winning the IFMA world titles in 2017.

Smith conceded it will be a tough fight on his opponent’s home turf and knows he will have to dig deep and get a KO in order to come away with the win.

He has been involved in high intensity training for the past two weeks and is now stepping up his preparation with jogging and regular sparring seasons with his Muay Thai coach Clayton Cook at Fusion Fight and Fitness Innisfail.

Singleton is coached by Chris Johnson from Muay Thai Mulisha in Brisbane who also runs a For The Fighter fight gear franchise.

The bout which will go over five two-minute rounds will have full Thai rules (FTR) which means no elbow pads can be worn in the ring, full elbows and knees can be used, and kicks and strikes to the head are allowed.

Whoever wins the title keeps the belt and purse but will need to fight again to retain their Under-18s title which could mean the challenge of a rematch from the losing opponent or a different opponent. The fighter who goes on to retain the title has the opportunity to go international in the same category.

The fight, which is part of the RMAA Fight Centre Battle By The Bay Future Champions Series 18, will be live streamed on www.livecombat.com for a subscription cost of $25.

Less than a month later, Smith will then fight again on June 14 in the XFC Gladstone Fight Night for Muay Thai open title in the 58kg division where he will go up against 19 -year-old David Borg from Gladstone.

Smith and Borg are helping create XFC history by being the first two Muay Thai fighters ever featured on the card.

This co-headline fight on the undercard is set to be one all strikers will love to watch as Smith and Borg are very technical and tough young fighters.

As this is an MMA event and the only Muay Thai bout on the night, Smith will have his first caged fight in the octagon with full Thai rules over five-by-twominute rounds, which means both fighters have to wear elbow pads.
