In-house fitness comp a winner!

ON a rainy Saturday morning in Tully 150 people packed into a shed on Pollard Street to watch 37 local competitors sweat it out in the first in-house Trace Your Fitness functional fitness competition. The shed-come-gym was fitted out by Tracee Harris and Matt Tozer from Trace Your Fitness only last October but hosts more than 20 fitness training sessions per week and a growing client base.

El Arish local Tracee Harris has been a personal trainer for four and a half years and ran many successful boot camps and circuit style classes before progressing into functional fitness training. This type of training incorporates gymnastics, cardio and strength training, including Olympic lifting. It caters for all fitness levels and no two sessions are the same.

The new gym environment is one of

“community and support,” Tracee said.

The completion consisted of two main categories: scaled (by weight) and intermediate. The intermediate mens ended in an exciting tie breaker which resulted in a win for Rob Waters. While this was Rob’s fifth competition he has only been training in the functional fitness style for 18 months.

“I like competing because it gets you out of your comfort zone and push yourself to do things you didn’t know you could do,” Rob said. “It is such a supportive environment and you feel comfortable and confident to start trying new things you never thought you would be able to do.”

Competing for the first time, Chantelle Fawkes echoed those statements, “Today I was surrounded by an amazing group of

people who to me are all inspirations in their own way… what a wonderful group of people to be a part of.” Chantelle has progressed from Mums and Bubs classes after having her fourth child to training in functional fitness several times a week and describes the “feeling of completing the comp as surreal.”

Trace Your Fitness clients have competed as a team in Mareeba, Innisfail and Cairns and are already training for competitions coming up in June and July.

This was the first in-house competition with Tracee looking to hold one or two per year.

U N F O R T U N AT E LY the unstable weather due to the rain-squalls and Cyclone Trevor made offshore boating difficult over last weekend.

Most of the fishing has been inshore, resulting in some nice Island Trout, Grass Sweet Lip and Small Mouth Nannygai being caught. I am writing this early in the week (Monday) so I expect that the better weather conditions during the week will result in some very good catches of Fingermark from the local headlands and islands.

The Fingermark fishing has been spectacular with plenty of bait now around, with the fish

schooled up in most of the normal haunts. These fish are mostly for the specialist as you need to use live baits such as herring or fish with freshly caught squid of a night to be consistent. However, over the past few weeks the Fingermark have often thrown caution to the wind and have on occasions been taking shopbought box squid when the fresh bait has run out.

There has also been good numbers caught on soft plastics and vibes; this is mainly done during the daylight hours with emphasis on a tide change.

The Barra and Jacks have been hit-and-miss, possibly because of the

ongoing rain, either way some anglers are doing quite well while others are struggling. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern, with the fish preferring an outgoing tide one day only to swap to an incoming tide the next.

The other obvious sign is the amount of bait in the area you are fishingtake special notice of the amount of prawns, Barra love them. For this reason I use a lot of prawn imitations such as the Zerek or Chase Bait lure patterns at this time of the year.

The Hinchinbrook region has produced some spectacular bottom fishing over the past couple of weeks with boats man-

aging good numbers of Fingermark, Grunter and even Black Jew. There has also been some good grunter caught in the coastal creeks. Generally the Grunter seem to bite the best on either side of the top of the tide.

The reports of reasonable numbers of Mud Crabs are coming a lot more consistently, both in the local creeks and in the Hinchinbrook area. I have also noticed a marked improvement in the salinity in the coastal creeks, of course this changes when we have heavy rain but slowly things are starting to get back to normal.

The mouth of the freshwater feeder creeks and drains running into the coastal creeks are still fishing well for Barra, Sooties and Tarpon.

Again, soft plastics such as paddle tails and prawn imitations are the stand out lures.

At this very early stage of the week the various

weather sites are predicting very light winds for this weekend and into next week. This will hopefully allow a rare opportunity for boats to head out wide to fish the main reefs and deep water rubble patches. For those who wish to stay inshore, either side of the early morning high tide will give opportunities to fish for grunter in the Hinchinbrook area or coastal creeks. This same early high tide will also suit chasing pelagics, such as Grey Mackerel, Queen Fish and Tuna around the islands.

Either side of the afternoon low tide will be ideal to chase Barra and Mangrove Jacks in the creeks.

Don’t forget the crab pots. There should also be prawns on the beaches between Tully Heads and Cardwell.

Golf Cardwell golf Last Thursday the Cardwell 18-hole stableford was won by Sneza Lazarus, second Jackie Olditch and third Christine Taylor.

There were only a few players who braved the wet conditions for Sporters 9-hole event which was won by Bert Pajonk with 18 pts, Rowley Mott second also 18 pts and Peter Topen third with 17 pts . N.T.P.s were Ray Rogulskyj and Peter Topen.

Saturday’s 18-hole stableford was won by Rod Rackley 38 pts second Tony Sorohan 36 pts the run down went to Keith Hoare, Rowley Mott and Jackie Olditch. N.T.P.s were Rod Rackley, Keith Hoare winning two and Rowly Mott who also collected the “Jackpot”.

Cardwell hosted the first round of the Men’s Pennants on Sunday and Tully were the winners of the day. El Arish came second and Cardwell third.

New Drop In 3 x 3 Basketball for youth launched at Innisfail PCYC

LAST month Innisfail PCYC launched a new Drop In 3 x 3 Basketball activity for local youth aged 12 to 25 years fortnightly on Fridays. Since then 10 new members have joined and it is hoped more will join up in the near future.

The cost is minimal with

only a one-time payment of $5.00 which includes a PCYC membership. In addition to basketball action, the latest music hits are played, along with a BBQ, cooking sausages for spectators and participants.

It is held in an informal style so there are no set teams, and varying age groups and skill sets are encouraged to play to-

gether. Games are kept short at 10 minutes to allow equal play time for all participants, there is no referee, and no scores are kept.

Bonnie Lugg, Program Coordinator at Innisfail PCYC said she sees this as a great benefit to the Innisfail community, as there are no other Drop In evening activities available.

“This allows the youth somewhere safe, fun, not affected by weather and with a method to expend some energy. The idea was generated from YES! (Youth Engagement Symposium), held in December 2018.

At YES! many of the participants brought forward the idea there wasn’t enough evening activities that were cost effec-

tive and available to them to do.”

“It is our hope that the popularity of this Drop In activity will increase, filling the need that was brought to our attention at the close of last year,” said Ms Lugg.

Innisfail Judo Club members gain valuable lessons from French Olympian Ferrid Kheder

FORTY five local judokas of all ages and abilities took to the mats at Innisfail Judo Club dojo for a Judo Shiai technique instruction session under the expert guidance of Ferrid Kheder, a French Olympian in Judo who placed seventh in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Kheder, who is regarded as one of the most well-rounded grapplers in the world put members through their paces with loosening up exercises, compe-

tition throwing and grappling techniques.

Judokas were given demonstrations of Ashi guruma (Leg Wheel) throw which was how Kheder lost his only fight in 2002 to a Korean world champion.

The half guard pass grappling technique Kheder learned from Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt Travis Stevens from USA, who won three fights on the way to the final using this technique and went on to win silver at Rio Olympics

in 2016.

The training session was made possible by Xavier Barker who used to run the NPA Judo Club in Bamaga and has now moved to Cairns.

Mr Barker, who chairs the North Queensland Judo development committee, said their aim is to bring in a new expert with a different set of skills to visit clubs in the region throughout the year, which assists judokas and coaches with technique development and builds networks.

This is the second session held this year, with clubs in the region gaining from the expertise of a Japanese coach last month.

Kheder also ran sessions in Mossman and Northern Beaches which attracted 30 judokas, as well as Gold Coast PCYC Judo Club. Kheder has been invited to return after a session at Jigsaw Jiu-Jitsu Club in Edmonton on how to use Judo techniques in BJJ. He began training in Judo at the age of four and his pas-

sion for fighting in MMA was fuelled by a love for all things Bruce Lee and his grandfather who was a boxer.

He is a sixth degree black belt in Judo and first degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Andre Galvao.

His impressive list of achievements include two times European champion, five times World Cup winner, five times French champion, two times European bronze, five times World Cup bronze and World

University third. He is also the No-GI World champion (SJJIF), four times No-GI world medallist at brown and black belt as a masters athlete (IBJJF).

Kheder, is also one of only few who have medalled in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo at the highest levels and then gone on to carve out a successful Mixed Martial Arts career with a record of 34 fights - 22 (wins) - 11 (losses) and (1 no contest) having never been submitted.

Tigers News with Shane Muriata JUST a quick reminder to start my column off this week: the six-times Premiership club the Brisbane Broncos have beaten the North Qld Cowboys 29-10 last Friday night in a one sided affair, similar to when Mike Tyson fought Homer Simpson for the WBC heavyweight title 15 years ago. Ok, Tyson did not fight Homer, but the Cows certainly got a touch-up last weekend which borderlined on embarrassment. Taulmanolo got owned by TPJ and the halves were petty ordinary, which begs the question: when is Jake Clifford due for a run?

Speaking of Tully Junior Tigers, Thomas Flegler had a night out to remember in his first Derby. Thomas ran for the most metres and was an absolute beast in defence. Anyway, that whole Broncos rant was brought to you by all the crying Cowboy supporters who refused to talk to me over the weekend after the game!

Moving on to the rest of the NRL games, wow, what an eventful weekend it was. The Warriors came crumbling back

to Earth while Stuey’s West Tigers kept the latest joke alive by sitting firmly on top of the NRL ladder after two rounds. Canberra should’ve beaten Melbourne, while the Gold Coast continue to be an actual joke like the Cowboys forward pack after being folded more than times than origami.

The Bulldogs should be worried like Anthony Emmis modelling career and the Penny Panthers looked the goods for the first time since Adrian Duro was my childhood idol (still is). Manly and the Dragons are already on shaky ground, and that’s where they belong.

The NRL circus continues this weekend, with what promises to have new clowns to talk about next week.

more matches to still to be played.

Innisfail bowls Unfortunately, Thursday’s game was a wash out. So much for “it never rains at the bowls Club on Thursday”. I guess it’s

a case of the adage that the exception proves the rule. However, on Saturday, 21 players made up for lost time.

Silkwood Bowls Club On Wednesday March 20 eight players enjoyed a social game. Alan Hudson and Karin Rastoll defeated Denise Charman and Wayne Mayelll 22/20.

Ten bowlers enjoyed a Sunday afternoon under slightly better weather conditions.

It’s almost time to Tame the Tully…

TODAY marks 50 days to go until Tully and the Cassowary Coast, Tropical North Queensland hosts the first ever IRF World Rafting Championships in Australia.

The excitement is electric as 400 white-water rafters, support crews and their families from up to 30 countries will soon arrive in the region in an attempt to Tame the Tully at the IRF 2019 World Rafting Championships Powered

by Experience Co, from 13 – 20 May. Teams from across the globe have now registered with previous World Champions Brazil, Japan and New Zealand Open Men’s and Women’s teams heading to Australia in May in their attempts to regain the IRF World Rafting Championship title.

The Australian Rafting Federation (ARF) will be represented by seven teams competing on home soil. The current Australian U19 Men and Women, U23 Men, Open Men and Women and the Master Men and Women have all secured their spot to take on the world.

National Titles for the International Rafting Federation (IRF) World Rafting Championships.

Will Hilder one of the six-member Echo H20 team, said “We have been training Wednesday and Fridays morning paddling out on the ocean and every other afternoon at the gym.

Saturdays we go up the river for the day.” He described the Tully River as one of the most challenging rivers, “The rapids are really big, there is rocks everywhere, it’s quite hard to pick your lines…We will be sure not to show any of the teams our home ground advantages.”

Will said he will be watching and cheering on his mother Clare is also competing for Australia in the Master Women, “It’s pretty great, we’d both never done it before.

We got the opportunity and just took it… its pretty exciting.”

Former World Champion and coach of the Echo H2O Under 23 Men’s team Graham Maifredi, said “Every training day is a boy to men adventure. They have developed into a tight unit and learnt to trust one another in a “real life “x box” game captur-

ing great life skills along the way. Our juniors are the future, onwards and upwards. The teams to be watching out for include Czech Republic and Japan, they are Team Australia’s main contenders for the titles in the U23 division.”

February saw Team Teikei from Japan Open Men team travel to Tully to get a start on training and prepare for the upcoming event.

Having hosted the last IRF World Rafting Championship, Argentina have been described as some of the best athletes and rank current number one in the world across most disciplines.

The Cassowary Coast Region can begin to roll out the red carpet for athletes and their families as early as May 1st with Japan confirming they will be arriving 7 days earlier to begin training.

Tully will be filled with colour and excitement over the next 50 days as the region will be on show with visitors expected from around the globe.

To celebrate the milestone organisers have now released: The official course

maps for the event, which will showcase the Tully River to the world. The course maps include the start and finish lines and spectator access points for all disciplines.

The official entertainment schedule outlining the event week including the official opening ceremony (13 May) Super Saturday (19 May) and the official closing ceremony (20 May).

The event week will be pumping with food trucks, children’s activities, live entertainment and beer gardens, creating the perfect atmosphere for spectators and competitors to experience all that Far North Queensland has to offer.

The official event competition handbook has also been released providing a one stop shop for all event details including competition schedules, site plans and entertainment for all athletes and spectators to the event.

The official athlete’s glamping village will be home to 320 athletes housed at the Tully Showgrounds. Village staff will serve competitors lunch and dinner while the local Rotary and Lions clubs will provide an optional breakfast service. The showgrounds

will have an international flavour with athletes from all around the world staying in the one location.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor John Kremastos said he was excited to welcome the athletes and teams from around Australia and the world to the region.

“We are keen to showcase what we have here and show them some true North Queensland hospitality,” Cr Kremastos said.

International Rafting Federation President Joe Willis Jones said, “2019 marks the 18th IRF World Rafting Championship showcasing the best of the best teams from around the globe coming together in the truly global rafting fraternity to take on the demanding rapids of the Tully River. Teams old and new will be welcomed to this picturesque location from the residents of the Cassowary Coast and we look forward to sharing this river family event with everyone.”
