Local riders impress at first NQQHA Western Dressage Show for year in Innisfail

MARIA GIRGENTI A NUMBER of riders recently braved tropical conditions and took part in the North Queensland Quarter Horse Association # 3 Series Two Western Dressage Show held at Innisfail Pony Club Grounds.

Paula Byrne was the judge for the first NQQHA show for the year in Innisfail and Tests A and C were conducted in all levels except Level Two (A and B).

The next Western Dressage show will be held on June 22 at Innisfail Pony Club Grounds.

Over the May long weekend, Vivian Wearing will run Western Dressage and Ranch Riding clinics at Innisfail Pony Club Grounds.

How to ride a Western Dressage Test clinic is on May 4 while on May 5 and 6 is the Introduction to Ranch Riding clinics which are limited to 14 riders per clinic and fence-sitting is free.

SPORT

WE had some unbelievable fishing in the days leading up to last weekend. The reef fishing was fantastic with good numbers of Coral Trout and Red Throat Emperor reported up in the reef shallows. The spear fishermen also did well with catches of Coral Trout, Tuskers, Crayfish and even the odd Red Emperor being speared in fairly shallow water.

continue to produce good numbers of Nannygai.

Those taking the trip out wide to the continental shelf are managing some great Red Emperor and both Rosy and Green Job fish.

The fishing around the islands has been fantastic with large numbers of Fingermark. I doubt that I have ever seen the numbers and quality of fish being caught at present.

Anglers need to take care if they want this quality

of fishing to remain; Fingermark are a very slow growing fish and do not release well. In my opinion a couple of fish per angler is all that should be taken.

The islands have also produced Island Trout, Grass Sweet Lip, Trevally and Queen Fish. There has been limited numbers of Grey and Spanish Mackerel caught, however I think the pelagic numbers will increase as a result of the large schools

of bait starting to move through the Family Group of Islands; this should attract them in.

The fishing in the coastal creeks has been a little hit and miss with some very good Mangrove Jacks and Barra caught one day, only for anglers to struggle the next. There has however been some good numbers of Mud Crabs caught and lots of prawns around the drains and mud flats.

The Hinchinbrook area has been generally fishing very well with good numbers of both Barra and Mangrove Jacks caught both over in Missionary Bay and in the channel.

The channel has also fished very well for Fingermark and surprisingly

the odd Black Jew. The numbers of Mud Crabs are increasing and there has been plenty of prawns on the Cardwell beaches.

The freshwater reaches of the Tully and Murray rivers has continued to fish well with some very good Barra being caught at the mouths of the drains and in the backwaters.

The majority of fish have taken soft plastic lures with a few monsters being caught on live baits.

Tinaroo Dam continues to produce the goods with local plumber Ando sending me through a photo of a monster Barramundi caught over the weekend. Tinaroo is still the place to go for a metery and the best part is that as it’s a stocked im-

poundment you are not harassing breeding stock.

Anyone who thinks these fish come easy or don`t fight are totally wrong and should have a try before commenting. Any Barra caught in Tinaroo is the result of a lot of hard work.

At this early stage of the week the weather forecast is for 15 knots on Saturday dropping down to light winds on Sunday and through next week.

Those wishing to chase Barra and Jacks have the option to fish the early morning incoming tide or to fish either side of the late afternoon low tide.

The early morning or evening low will also suit those wanting to fish for Fingermark around the close inshore islands or the Hinchinbrook Channel.

Either side of the mid-morning high will suit those wanting to chase Grunter on the Hinchinbrook flats. For now, it looks like the break in the weather will possibly allow anglers to travel out wide to fish the reefs and rubble patches.

THE Association Report for Tropical Coast District Veteran Golfers last Tuesday March 12 saw Twenty-four players competing in the Irish 4-ball team event in Tully.

This annual event was won by a Tully team: Eric Zamora, Simon Strutt, Geoff Grainger and Graeme Sinton with 108 points. In second place was: Mick De Vries (Cardwell), Mike Dann (Ingham), Brice Henry (Tully) and Tex Morton (Cardwell) with a score

of 102 points. Third place went to Ingham/ Tully team of Sue Cameron (Ingham), Deb Giles (Ingham), Bob Williams (Tully) and Mike Harris (Tully) with 96 points.

Betty Favier (Tully) won two of the ladies’ pin shots on holes 7/16 and 9/18 and Kass Marshall (Tully) was unbeatable with her second shot on number 2/11 finding the hole.

Shane Muriata AS the rain cleared for the sun to shine on Gumboot City, Grant Blenner and Co could not hope for a better start to the Tully Junior Rugby League season when the black and gold kicked off their preseason at the Tully Showgrounds on Saturday.

It was an actioned packed day, with all teams enjoying their first hit out for 2019. The first game I had the pleasure of watching was the Jono Taylor-coached All Stars that had many superstars in the making. Samantha Patch was awesome to say the least, but a special mention to Cowhen Kennedy making his Tigers debut.

Over on the main field, the bigger boys were putting on a good show, with the Paul Ketchell-coached Innisfail side running over the Steven Morice-led Tigers. Although it was a one-sided affair, our boys can take some good from the game which included some very promising signs of footy.

Coach Emmi was very pleased with his side’s commitment when they were narrowly defeated by a very good Innisfail side. “The effort we showed was great.

We took a long time to get ready, but once the game got into a rhythm, we found ourselves in the grind. A slow start is

never a good idea against a good side, so it’s something we’ll work on.”

Another good game to come out of Saturday was the U15s, who played their first trial as well against a quality opposition. Gun forward Manny, with the help of star half nephew Andrew Leo and the Tigers outside men of Nathan Muriata and Ralphy, found gaps everywhere.

Thank you once again to the Innisfail Junior Rugby League Club for making the trek down south, with officials reporting a high number of players taking the step onto the field for the 2019 season. Cheers to all the officials that ran the day, including FAOs, Referees, canteen operators, coaches and parents who made the day very enjoyable.

With the first round of NRL out of the way for 2019, the much anticipated games were fizzers, disappointments and surprise packages that stretch further than any muscles I may have on my gut.

With my beloved, yet useless, Bronx going down to the refs favourite team the Storms on Thursday night, I couldn’t help but feel very proud of our local Thomas Flegler, who came off the bench and did very well to handle his maiden NRL game. Many

pundits were predicting it may have been too early to feed him to the wolves, but as I did on my first high school date, I came home knowing that another date was only just around the corner. Hope you get many more games Thomas Flegler, and good luck for the rest of the season.

The Cowboys were ok (that’s all I’m saying Linda Davies) while the Panthers should’ve beaten the Eels. My tip of the Warriors getting second last place is already coming back to bite me, but the surprise package was Stuey’s Tigers who up settled the Manly Sea Eagles in a classic at Leichardt. I really like the looks of the Bunnies, but I wouldn’t read too much into the Roosters defeat.

My other favourite team, the Knights, showed why they will be contenders and the Bulldogs, well, they still look like pretenders to me.

This week sees the greatest Qld Derby reignite once again, when six-time premiers the Broncos take on one-time champs the Cows at Suncorp in what will be the first encounter in almost 14 years without the great Jonathan Thurston. Can the Cows show everyone they can still beat their big cousins with their greatest player, or will Siebolds men make a statement at home to silence the round 1 critics? All will be revealed on Friday night.

A combination of the Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles and Hulkamaniacs will lead the TJRL 2019 coaching staff this season.

Bowls This Week

South Johnstone Bowls

Last Saturday March 16 South Johnstone held their annual Lightning Triples. Sixteen teams took to the green for five matches. The winners of the Lightning triples were Kiwi, Alan and Petrol and running in 2nd was Ian Fisher’s team followed by Frank Obah’s team.

Sunday March 17 saw the B-grade final between Peter Hitzke and Steve Ollson. Hitzke took the lead early and he never slowed down, defeating Ollson 25 - 10.

Congratulations to the 2019 B-Grade Champion Peter Hitzke. The mens pair match saw M Hooker and K Albert defeat K Deegan and B Smith 22 -10. Social bowls saw L Mylrea, P Longford and K Villalba defeat Donny, T Kerrigan and D Deegan 18 -12.

Twilight barefoot bowls is being held this Friday the March 22 at the SJBC. The night will kicks off with a $5 barbecue at 6pm followed by bowls to commence at 6.30pm. The cost for bowling will be $10.

The night will also have meat tray raffle and the members draw which stands at $200.

The Club is open from 3.30pm.

Sunday Social bowls names in by 1pm with 1.30pm start.

The cost for bowling will be $10 and smoko is provided.

Silkwood Bowls

Last Wednesday March 13 only six players enjoyed a social game.

Bring Back the Reef Tour 10,000 dives to tell the story LIN Sutherland’s latest documentary feature film ‘Beauty and the Reef’ hit the big screen in conjunction with Event cinemas on October 9th and on March 3rd aired on channel 9 nationally.

The premier attracted Queensland’s environmental minister and other key MP’s as well as leaders in environmental law and tourism facilities. It is set to shake this world up in caring for our coral reefs.

The select audience were moved by her unfolding eye witness account of the environmental changes affecting the Great Barrier Reef and her quest of visiting and interviewing leading experts to understand why.

SPORT LOCAL Chace attended the national camp in January during the Australian open. Chace was selected as one of the top four males in his age group from the state of Queensland. The camp attendees were provided a positive experience which supported their long-term tennis development. National coaches make observations of areas of strength and development. The information was reported back to the children’s primary coach.

Chase has been training with Baseline Tennis Academy.

The camp ran for a week and consisted of sixty-four players ten years of age. The attendees were the top four boys and top four girls from each state and sixteen coaches.

“Chace was chosen from the camp to do the coin toss for the Men’s Singles Final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the Sunday night,” said Jody Crema Chace’s mother.

Players in first ever combined Cassowary Coast rugby league Under 12 team selected in Peninsula squad

THE first ever combined Cassowary Coast Under 12 rugby league team competed in the Peninsula trials at Jones Park in Cairns last Monday.

Students from 10 Cassowary Coast schools made up the team and in hot and humid conditions played four games, vying for selection in the Under 12 Peninsula team.

Cassowary Coast Under 12 coach Shane Muriata, who is a passionate Tully Tigers supporter raised a few eyebrows when he was spotted wearing

the traditional red and white colours of Innisfail.

From the Cassowary Coast team, six boys were selected in the possible versus probables game and then three boys were selected in the 17 player squad. These players were Junior Mataa and Billy Helion from Mission Beach State School and Eziekal Ivey from Tully State High School, while Chayse Briggs and Zaviah Di Carlo from Innisfail State College were named as shadow players.

Innisfail & District Netball hosts annual Marlin Coast Netball clinic MARIA GIRGENTI

FORTY females recently took to the courts at Innisfail State College for the annual Marlin Coast Netball player development clinic for players, coaches and umpires hosted by Innisfail & District Netball Association which was run by Heather McLaren and Cherie Jackson from Marlin Coast Netball.

The clinics were held for players aged 11 - 17 from Innisfail, Babinda and Tully who wished to trial for Innisfail Netball and Marlin Coast academy teams who are members

of an association in the Marlin Coast region. Players took part in drills and games where their game skills and techniques were observed.

Umpires aged 14 - 17 participated in a clinic with Marlin Coast umpire coordinator Cherie Jackson.

These clinics enable members from seven associations the opportunity to work with regional coaches, outline development pathway for netballers in the Marlin Coast region, as well as select Marlin Coast Academy squads and TID athletes for potential academy

teams.

After the clinics, players were selected to join the Kenfrost Homes Vicki Wilson Marlin Coast Academy squad with Innisfail & District Netball Association for 2019.

Marlin Coast Netball Region established the Marlin Coast Academy squads to further develop the potential of athletes in each of the associations throughout the Marlin Coast region. The aim of the program is to identify and develop talented players and assist in the provision of a pathway for players to progress to the next step in the

Marlin Coast region.

Players will then be required to attend the first combined regional training session (Gala Day) this weekend at Smithfield, as well as local sessions and take part in a home-based program under the guidance of Academy and association satellite coaches, as well as given the opportunity to work with high profile visiting coaches.

The region will also continue with a ‘Shooting for the Stars’ program to assist GS/GA with their techniques, shooting under pressure and working with mid courters.
