SARI HYYTINEN LOCAL rafters are training hard for the 2019 World Rafting event being hosted in Tully. The boys train twice a week on the ocean before school at the Mission Beach Outrigger Canoe Club at the Vaka hut down South Mission Beach. On Saturdays they train on the Tully river and they also attend the gym for workouts.

The local community have been supporting our local team with members from “Euramo, El Arish Mission Beach and Tully Heads,” said Kelly Turner a mother of one of the participants who is currently assisting with the team’s management and community support. Kelly Turner and Sean Gill assist the team as coaches with the help of Graham Maifredi the Event Director / Chairman for 2019 World Rafting Championship Organising Committee “The team have been fortunate enough to paddle with the Japanese Open men’s team whilst they trained on the river these past 3 weeks. It was a real honour as these guys are a professional and sponsored team,” said Kelly.

The team have been fortunate to get good community support. At the time this is being written the Cassowary Coast council have donated $500 towards costs, Peter King from Solect Energy has sponsored the team by providing them with racing shirts and Clearway Advice and Financial Management donated have donated $250. There are currently 5 tins around town

where people can donate to support the team. There are at Shanti cafe, Lennys fruit and veg store, cafe Bang Bang, Tuskers cafe and Bingil Bay Cafe. A quiz night is also being organised as way of fundraising event.

“The boys have come a long way since entering the national championships last year. Most of the boys had never stepped foot in a raft let alone raft one of the world’s most challenging rivers. During the last twelve months they have grown into fine young athletes. Their bond is strong, and they have each other’s backs, they love a good prank and a laugh but when it comes to rafting and competing, they are a serious and a proud team,” said Kelly.

Skydive Mission Beach donated a free skydive valued at $309 as a prize for a raffle and Bingil Bay Cafe and Shanti Cafe have donated meal vouchers as raffle prizes.

The team appreciates the support as the donations help them cover the expense of paddles, appropriate, footwear, helmets and the costs involved of spending a week away from home during the championships.

THE breaks in the weather over the past two weeks have allowed boats to travel out to the main reefs. Most boats have reported reasonably good catches of Coral Trout and Red Throat Emperor and the added bonus of some nice Spanish Mackerel.

The deep water rubble patches and wrecks inside the reef have been the stand outs with very good catches of both small

and large mouth Nannygai being reported. Last Thursday I headed out and fished a rubble patch just inside the reef, after a quick shift due to sharks, the second spot produced the goods: a fantastic twohour session and we left them still biting.

I have also heard of some nice Cobia and Tea Leaf Trevally being caught. Reports have been filtering through of good

catches of Red Emperor, big Nannygai and Rosy Job Fish coming from the deep water out near the continental shelf. When I remarked that this was a dangerous place to be of a night at this time of the year (logs and storms) I was told they were catching these fish during the daylight hours.

germark and the occasional report of Grunter. There has also been Queen Fish, Trevally and the odd Spanish Mackerel being caught around the island headlands.

Hopefully if the weather allows we will start to see those huge schools of bait moving through the area; we just need a little better water quality.

The Hinchinbrook area is a fantastic place to fish this time of year with plenty of sheltered areas to escape the south-easterly winds. Reports are coming in of some great catches of both Grunter and Fingermark. Both these fish have been turning up around the Hinchinbrook headlands,

as well as in the deep holes and entrances of the rivers in both Missionary Bay and the main channel.

The Barra and Mangrove Jacks are being caught in reasonable numbers, however at the moment they can be a little hit-and-miss. The key is to find reasonably good water conditions and plenty of bait.

The coastal rivers have been the same with the better Barra fishing over the past week being mainly around the Tully River.

The Murray River has been a tougher fishery, probably due to the dirtier water. I have, however, heard of some good crabs being caught in the Murray.

Tropical Coast District Veteran Golfers

LAST week saw the Tropical Coast Vets play a Stableford aggregate. There were very fine conditions at El Arish.

The Runaway winners were the home El Arish team of Caryl Lavell and Stephen Wells with 73 points. Playing consistently well was last week’s winning team of Mick DeVries (Cardwell) and Brice Henry (Tully) who came second with 68 Points.

Next week is an El Arish there will be four Ball at Tully with an 8am Muster for 8.30 start.

The Hull River has been the surprise package with some very good Mangrove Jacks being caught along with the occasional Barra. The freshwater reaches of the Tully and Murray are still fishing well with some incredible catches of Barra being reported from the run-off drains and creeks.

At the time of writing this report (which is very early in the week), the forecast is for the wind to increase gradually on Friday to end up at 10 to 15 knots for the weekend and even a little higher by Sunday afternoon. This will keep most boats in-

shore.

The early morning high tide will give some opportunities to fish for pelagic around the islands, however another possibility would be to fish for Grunter around the edges of the flats in the Hinchinbrook region.

The best bet for a Barra or a Jack would be to fish either side of the midday low tide, the smaller run in tide during the afternoon will make fishing easier inside the creeks.

The Babinda team took out the Ivan Granich Memorial Shield on Sunday February 17 to break South Johnstone’s four year winning streak. SPORT Tully Golf Last Saturday’s golfers played on a rather damp course. Members play a single stableford event with prizes kindly donated by Rick and Tracey from NewsXpress Tully.

The scoring was low for the day and the wet conditions certainly didn’t help.

The best performer in the wet was Kevin Edwards with 35 points who was just ahead of Brice Henry in second place on 34 points. Third place with 33 points was Darryl Edwards. The nearest to the pins for the day were 2/11 Wendy Holloway, 7/16 Kass Marshall.

Thursday’s 9-hole sporters competition also saw low scoring with six players crowding the leader-board. But after countbacks, Claire Bourke picked up the 9-hole prize. Mike Harris won the six-hole. The rundown went to Betty Favier and Kevin Pease.

Local Muay Thai fighters win at Path to Elite event in Cairns MARIA GIRGENTI

TWO Muay Thai fighters from Fusion Fight and Fitness Innisfail recently competed in the sell-out Explosive Fight Promotions Path to Elite event at Cairns Colonial Club and put in strong performances in their bouts, held over three two-minute rounds.

After dropping his older opponent twice, Jack Mills got a split decision win against Tate Peever, from Townsville in the 45kg division.

His fight was very good and hard fought with a strong mixture of skills, especially dominating with his boxing and putting in some hard hits.

In her debut Muay Thai fight, Taylah Barns smashed her way to a unanimous win against debutante Rion Boney from Cairns in the 52kg division.

Barns had a good match up and performed well in her first fight by keeping up the pressure against her much older opponent. Although Boney went hard, Barns dominated with her push and switch kicks, also

landing some brutal punches to the face of her opponent.

Both fighters said the atmosphere was amazing and buzzing with a crowd of over 200 who were very vocal, noisy and supportive during each fight which really bolstered their performances.

Muay Thai coach Clayton Cook said he was very proud of both fighters. “Jack did really well against an older and more experienced opponent and beat him with ease, while Taylah was unbelievable in her debut fight. She did extremely well in the ring and came out firing from start to finish with great push kicks off her feet,” said Mr Cook.

Mills will increase his intensive training regime as he prepares for an exclusive army boxing tournament being held at Townsville Army Barracks on March 8 where he has already been matched up with an opponent from New South Wales.

He is gaining valuable experience, as this was Mills’ second Muay Thai bout and 13th fight

overall with 11 in the boxing ring.

Barns said while she enjoyed fighting as a hobby, in the future she hoped to be matched up with an opponent and take part in another Explosive Fight Promotions Elite event.

Both fighters especially wished to thank trainers Clayton Cook and Willey Grattan who worked tirelessly in the lead up the event with intensive daily training sessions, going above and beyond to make sure they were pumped and fight ready.

Barns also wanted to say a huge thanks to Donna Hudson and her bosses for allowing her time off for training and feeding her up, as well as everyone who helped in the preparation for her debut fight physically and mentally.

Innisfail Leprechauns to field team in inaugural CDRL Women’s NRL League Touch competition

THIS year will see the Mamu Health Innisfail Leprechauns women’s team take to Callendar Park to compete in the inaugural Cairns District Rugby League Women’s NRL League Touch competition which will kick off on March 30.

The club is excited to announce Mamu Health Service have come onboard as major sponsors for the women’s team whose name and logo will be proudly displayed on their new playing jersey.

There is a lot of interest in the proposed women’s competition so it is hoped it will be well supported by clubs and the community.

The league touch format of the game has primarily been introduced as a pre and post season option, but a pilot of it is being played ‘in-season’ in the

CDRL to introduce females to the game.

The rules are aligned to the contact version of the game so it has looks and feels more like the rugby league than traditional touch football.

There will be 11 players on the field with a marker; tap off after a try is scored; defenders stand back not less than seven metres; attacking players can’t initiate a touch; play-on if the ball is knocked back; kicks in play; markers and the dummy half can score and get touched.

With the introduction of the competition some women may choose to transition to the tackle format of the game, building the base for the future women’s tackle participation.

The women’s competition was given the go ahead at the CDRL AGM with all CDRL clubs fielding teams which has been aligned with the CDRL

draw.

It will be a short 10 round season which kicks off on March 30 followed by the grand final between the top two teams after the end of regular season to be played June 22 at a venue still to be confirmed. This competition is open to females aged 15 years to 40.

For ladies who want to play tackle rugby league, two teams, City and Country, will play a series of games ahead of selection for the representative Cairns team.

Training sessions for women are held on Thursdays at Callendar Park from 6:00pm to 8:00pm who will work with the Innisfail Leprechauns senior rugby league players.

Cassowary Coast Futsal Under 10 and 12 teams crowned champions of FNQ Futsal Super League

THE Cassowary Coast Futsal Club has recently capped off a stellar season by winning the Under 10 and Under 12 Futsal FNQ Super League Grand Finals at Redlynch Central Sports Stadium.

The Cassowary Coast Futsal U10s team was invited to take part in the Futsal FNQ Super League competition after winning the FNQ Futsal Titles for the third year in a row. This was huge commitment for players as it meant travelling to Cairns each Saturday since October 13 last year.

In the Under 10’s division, the team finished at the top of the ladder at the end of the pool stage, remaining undefeated throughout the season.

A 9-2 semi-final win against Cairns United saw Cassowary Coast Under 10s go up against FNQ Hot Dogs FC in the Grand Final where they won against the Hot Dogs team 7-1.

Golden Gloves for the best goal keeper of the tournament and Happy Venables was awarded Player of the Under 10 Grand Final.

In the U12’s division, all the U10 boys stepped up to play with Jordan Ozzi the only Under 12s player added to the side.

The decision to play in the Under 12s competition was purely to challenge the team with more game time and help prepare them for their trip to the Futsal Oz Junior Nationals held in Melbourne in January earlier this year. The boys showed a lot of character and held their own throughout the season against the more experienced and physical Under 12 teams, finishing third at the end of the pool stage.

The semi-finals saw the team step it up a gear where they played second-placed team Cairns United, coming away with a surprising 9-3 win.

In the U12 Grand Final they played first-placed FNQ Hot-

dogs, a team they had not beaten throughout the season. In what was an outstanding performance by all players, their best of the year, they defeated the FNQ Hotdogs 9-3 with Jordan Ozzi named Player of the Final.

Given that Cassowary Coast Futsal does not currently have a local futsal competition, it’s an exceptional effort to end the season as Under 10 and Under 14 FNQ Futsal Titles champions, Under 10 and Under 12 Futsal FNQ Super League champions and placed in the final 16 at the Futsal Oz Junior Nationals in Melbourne, all during the past six months.

ETHAN Bidois, a graduate of Innisfail State College in 2018, was successful in winning a prestigious George Alexander Foundation Scholarship valued at $22,500 to help support his full time university studies.

Bidois, who has a history of high academic achievements, was College captain and Dux at Innisfail State College last year and achieved a high Overall Position (OP) score. He has relocated and will be studying a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at

Griffith University in Brisbane this year.

As part of the extensive application, Bidois had to supply detailed evidence of secondary education results, program preferences, evidence of community participation and leadership, as well as academic and character referees.

He also had to provide his CV, along with personal statements on aims and long term career goals, scholarship benefits and display of leadership

experience, as well as a threeyear plan outlining how he will develop work and skills over the duration of the scholarship funding.

The George Alexander Foundation was established by Mr Alexander AM (Order of Australian Medal) in 1972 to provide grants for public charitable purposes in Australia.

The objective of the scholarships is to assist with costs associated with accommodation fees for students who can

demonstrate academic merit and the capacity to achieve their full potential while studying at Griffith University.

The George Alexander Foundation has an emphasis on helping talented young people, such as Ethan, to achieve their potential and go on to contribute to the Australian community. Mr Alexander believed in the notion of ‘planting seeds and hoping they grow into pretty big trees.’

Former Innisfail State College Year 12 student Ethan Bidois has won a George Alexander Foundation Scholarship which will greatly assist with his full time university studies in Brisbane.
