HUNDREDS of punters took advantage of the glorious weather and flocked to the Innisfail Turf Club Australian Banana Industry Race Day on Saturday for the six-race program.

The annual event was sponsored by Australian Banana Growers’ Council who also hosted a special luncheon in the covered pavilion for patrons. Stephen Lowe, Chair, Australian Banana Growers’ Council said, “The Innisfail Banana Race Day is a fantastic way to bring the banana community together – it’s been a highlight on the local calendar for many years. Not only is it a chance to put on your best banana outfit, it’s great to catch up with merchants and agents away from day-to-day business.

On top of that, it’s an opportunity for our industry to support and say thank you to the Cassowary Coast community more broadly and a massive thank you goes to the organising committee for their efforts in putting on another wonderful event.”

The farming community does not need another layer of useless draconian legislation making it harder and more expensive to farm in an industry with ever diminishing returns.”

Throughout the afternoon, the judging of the Junior Boys and Girls Fashions took place, followed by the pre-judging for the Fashions on the Field and presentation of the overall winners in a number of different categories, including a Backpacker Fashions on the Field.

In the first race, the 900m Class 4 Plate, High Dive ridden

by Mark Elliott prevailed for Cairns trainer Scott Cooper, ahead of Cairns trained horse, Prickles ridden by Wanderson D’Avila in second and Cairns trained horse, Rose Clip in third place.

The Class B Handicap over 1,000m was won by Rothesay Magic ridden by D’Avila and trained by Kevin Mearns from Mareeba while Jackoh trained

Ice Addict: Just One Moment of Weakness SEAN DENT

ANDRE’A Simmons is Founder, Director, and CEO of Australian Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC). She could be your mother or your daughter or your sister if your mother, daughter, or sister was a millionaire by the time she was 21. The point is, she was not a down and out; she didn’t fit the stereotype of drug addict.

By the time she turned 40, she still wasn’t a drug addict.

Then she got divorced, which she was quite happy about because it was a marriage in which she was abused both physically and emotionally.

“I flew to Melbourne and pursued a relationship with someone from my past who I knew was on Ice.” One night, he offered her a smoke of his pipe, and she refused because she “wasn’t into that stuff.”

Then he said the magic words:

“You trust me, don’t you?”

She didn’t want to appear to be a stick in the mud, and it was probably just like marijuana, not like a needle going in her arm or a tablet you take that you can’t control. “I’d never seen marijuana kill anyone. I figured I was old enough and wise enough to have a try without getting hooked.” It was a one-time deal.

Two weeks later, she did it again. A week after that, she did it again. Four days later, she did it again. “Very quickly, I was doing it every day.”

She still didn’t consider herself an addict even though soon after that she was mortgaging her three houses and selling her $60,000 Mercedes convertible for $20,000 just so she could buy Ice. Then she maxed out three credit cards with $75,000 limit, all to pay for her $500 a day habit.

She found herself living

in an apartment devoid of furniture except for a TV, a couch, and a bed because she’d pawned everything else. She isolated herself from friends, her career, and her family, including her children. “I was stuck in the world of Ice and I didn’t even think anything existed outside of that world. The only thing that mattered was the next hit.”

She manipulated people, she lied, she stole food from Coles just to eat, and she descended into a world of psychotic episodes and paranoia where the government was monitoring her through her TV. The only way out of this hell was to get more Ice, and if it came to selling her body, fine.

“It wasn’t a problem because there was no value left in me.”

She belonged to Ice. She blacked out her windows so the government couldn’t monitor her with

TULLY RED CROSS AGM 2019 JEAN VALLIANOS, OAM, PRESIDENT, TULLY RED CROSS BRANCH. Tully Red Cross held their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, August 14. Nineteen people attended and the President Jean Vallianos welcomed them and gave her report of all the work the local Tully branch had done over the year, visiting the Tully Nursing Home and Respite Centre, net working with other organisations and helping at functions e.g. World Rafting competition, Tully Show, take a kid fishing, and also helping with flood and drought relief State-wide, raising funds by raffles, cent sales, and Door Knock Appeal. The Treasurer, Dot Gabiola gave her report for the year also. Helen Walsh, Silkwood/Kurrimine Red Cross, Frances Maloy, CWA Tully, and Shane Greenwood, Tully Support Centre all congratulated Tully for their work and efforts over the year.

Everyone said Shane Greenwood, the Guest Speaker, gave a very informative over-view of what the Support Centre does, the need for more volunteers, and the optimism everyone had for an improved future in Tully.

The following Office Bearers were elected for 2018/19. And Chair, Councillor Rick Taylor, advised that only one nomination was received for each position: President: Jean Vallianos

Vice President: Dina Milone Deputy President: Tanya Caroll Hon. Secretary: Dina Milone Treasurer: Dot Gabiola Badges were given to elected office bearers by Deputy Mayor Wayne Kimberley.

Presentations Awards - Merit Awards for Dawn Baillie, Trevor Baillie, Mary Bacic and Jill Brighton - were presented by Chair, Councillor Rick Taylor and citations read by Jean Vallianos. Recipients had all given the local branch their assistance over many years. Without their help the Red Cross could not continue. Jean emphasised that the local branch needs more volunteers and members and thanked all who had helped over the year.

She hopes that people will continue to support the Red Cross. If you are interested in joining you, will be most welcome. Just contact Jean.

During the UFO Festival

On the weekend of the UFO festival the Bendigo Community Bank

was giving the local community a chance to win a bank account with a balance of $500.

Simmons is 5’7” but weighed just 40 kilos by then.

Her kidneys were damaged, her hair was falling out, and she was a mess. She fell to her knees to ask for help. “Then, out of the sky came a light through the cross of the church and over the top of me. I felt a call from God, and I felt transfixed like under hypnosis, and I

started to hear directions what I had to do.” She followed the instructions that told her to book a flight back to the Gold Coast.

Then she got another sign.

“The travel agent told me the flight would cost $76 to come back the following morning.

The voice then told me to check my account. I went online and I had $76 in there.”

She got home to her mum’s place and locked herself in a room where she cried and wrote for weeks, too ashamed to face anyone. She thought many times about throwing herself off the balcony, but even in those weak moments, Simmons knew she wasn’t finished yet. There was something she had to do.

Cassowary Coast Car Show & Swap Meet Just the Treat for Families MARIA GIRGENTI ENGINES will rumble, and shiny cars of all shapes, sizes and ages will be on show at the Innisfail Showgrounds this Sunday, August 25 for the annual Innisfail PCYC Cassowary Coast Car Show, Swap Meet and Men's Expo which runs from 9:00am until 2:00pm.

It is a great way for rev heads and motoring enthusiasts to spend a relaxing day checking out the many different classic, hot rods, utes and muscle cars which will be housed in the undercover and outdoor areas.

There will be live entertainment, food and drinks, swap stalls, prizes and raffles with a great opportunity to pick up

some great Father's Day gifts.

All funds raised will go towards the delivery of youth and crime prevention programs in the local community through Innisfail PCYC youth worker.

The Innisfail PCYC Car Show was named the Community Event of the Year 2017 Cassowary Coast Regional Council Australia Day Awards ceremony.

There is no charge for stall holders and car entries are welcomed for a cost of $10 for undercover and $5 outdoors with gold coin entry for patrons.

Cars will be judged, with trophies in 17 categories to be awarded including: Best Hot Rod, Best Holden, Best American, Best British, Best

Ford, Best Coupe, Best Modern, Best International, Best Ute, Best Classic, Best Original, Best Paint, Best Mopar, Best European, Top Street Machine, People's Choice and Car of the Show.

Her dealer gave her something called G. “G is a horse tranquilizer. Some places call it Fantasy, but it’s basically for putting horses down. He told me it would make me feel better, so I downed it. Right away, I stopped breathing. I felt blackness, I felt my heart in my throat, and I stared at the ceiling and thought, if there is a God out there, please take me, and I’m sorry for what I’ve become, this is not what I wanted to be. I’d destroyed myself.

“I woke up a few hours later in a back room they’d left me in. I could have been dead for all they cared. I decided I

The Cassowary Coast Red Shield Appeal raised a total of $9,449.90, of which $9,071.90 was raised through static collections and business doorknock conducted by Innisfail Lioness Club which raised $377.

This money is vital to the work of the Salvos and giving hope to where it is needed most in the Cassowary Coast region.

Cassowary Coast Red Shield Appeal Chairman, Mark Nolan gave special mention to hard-working committee members, Innisfail Lioness club members who did a business doorknock for the first time this year.

Special certificates of appreciation were presented to all the volunteers, store staff and community members who contributed in any way to the Red Shield Appeal.

Vietnam Veterans Commemorated

DAYS like this past Sunday at Rotary Park on Wongaling Beach bring out the best in Australians. There’s never a sense of anyone going through the motions. Those who attend, and especially those speaking on behalf of those who fell, they give from their heart during these gatherings.

The organisers expected about 50 attendees, they said, but I counted more like a hundred. They were there to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day, originally known as Long Tan Day, the day chosen to honour the men of D company, 6RAR, who on Aug 18, 1966 fought Operation Smithfield, which was later to become known as the Battle of Long Tan. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought for their lives in torrential downpour and a thick mist that blanketed the plantation against as many as 2500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops coming at them from three sides at a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan. Seventeen Australian/New Zealanders lost their lives in that battle, but against

all odds, they took down more than 250 enemy soldiers.

Later, a Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to D Company by President, Lyndon B. Johnson, of the United States in recognition of their bravery.

In his address to the crowd, Max Godwin a Vietnam veteran who came up from Victoria for the occasion, focused on a couple of important areas. Obviously, honouring those who fought was priority one. More than 60,000 Australian troops served in Vietnam during a 10year period, starting in 1962.

“Vietnam Veterans Day is an opportunity for all Australians – and particularly for Vietnam veterans, their families, and their friends – to commemorate all battles of, and service during the Vietnam War. As a nation, we must never forget the service and sacrifice of those Australians who served their nation in the Vietnam War,” he said.

Godwin went on to acknowledge that the War in Vietnam provoked domestic controversy in Australia, but pointed out that Australia took two important lessons from that experience. “First, that voicing opposition to Australia’s involvement was a democratic right. Brave young people have fought, suffered, and died to secure that

right. Second, that in exercising the right to oppose a war, one should nevertheless support and respect those whom the government sends to fight it.”

Cr Wayne Kimberley was also there. It’s often taken for granted that our representatives are always available for such events, even when they’re held at night or on weekends, and they’ll say a few respectful words. But it has to be said, Kimberley spoke unscripted and from the heart. He was more than a mere observer of the war.

“Veterans played a very special part in my life. My father was a Vietnam veteran. He was part of the training team in Vietnam. I spent a lot of my life moving around Australia living in Army camps.

The one thing that sticks with me with the veterans was the camaraderie, the way they all stick together, they all were there.” He finished by thanking all the veterans and their families, and you got the sense that he also had in mind people who’d become part of his life as a child.

One important announcement concerned the retrieval of the remains of Peter Gillson, Lance Corporal Richard Parker, Lance Corporal John Gillespie, Pilot Office Robert Carver, Flying Officer Michael Herbert, and Private David Fisher. For their families, this was an important moment and according to David Ryan, Secretary of Tully RSL sub branch, this closes the book on Australians that were MIA in Vietnam.

nalistic conventions, so I can’t say their exact words, but what they didn’t say was anything like, “Sure, we’ll go down to the pool and listen to their concerns. They do pay our salary, after all.”

Both Goodman and Laurie Trott, Media and Communications Officer, denied that that $250,000 was allocated specifically for improvements to the Cardwell Pool. We showed them proof and then their story changed. They then said they always intended to spend $250,000 and in fact, anticipated that $239,000 would have been spent on the pool within the next couple of months.

I then asked for an official response in writing, and I got one. If you’ve lived with teen-

agers, you know when they are telling you something that’s not a complete lie, but it’s not the complete truth either. However, officials within the council intimated that they were happy to work with Friends of the Pool, so I backed off. This was last May. Since then, as far as Metcalfe and several members of the group I met last week are concerned, not much has changed.

“All we’re asking for is what they would do if their mothers were part of this group,” said Metcalfe. No one from the council had visited the pool with the group to discuss their concerns. My message to the council is this: You get on the Bruce Highway and head south. It will take you about an

hour. Meet with them and talk with them. It’s that simple. If you see what I saw, you’ll agree there’s work needed. Friends of the Pool will even pay for your petrol – with their rates.

Alternatively, if it’s too much trouble, Metcalfe is happy to wait till a new council gets voted in next March.

Community Pays Tribute to Battle of Long Tan MARIA GIRGENTI THE 57th anniversary of the Australia's Commitment to South Vietnam from 1962 - 1975 was remembered in Innisfail on Sunday as a group of dedicated people gathered at the RSL cenotaph for a special Vietnam Veterans Day commemoration service to honour those who had made the supreme sacrifice.

The Battle of Long Tan was fought between the Australian Army and Viet Cong forces in the rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan in South Vietnam on August 18, 1966.

Parade marshall Ron Henderson brought AAFC 107 Squadron cadets to stand at ease around the cenotaph during the service, while bugler Darryl Anderson played the Last Post, Reveille and Marc Darveniza piped the lament during the wreath laying.

BJ Price said a special dedication prayer and acknowledged the effect of war on service personnel and their families.

BEFORE the Cardwell Pool closed for winter, there was a bit of a fuss. It was one I suspected at the time didn’t merit a news story. Essentially, it revolved around a group of about 40 seniors in Cardwell called Friends of the Pool, led by Sue Metcalfe. Friends of the Pool provides help free of charge to the aged and those in rehab or recovering from surgery. Pool exercise can be a great way for seniors to get fit or recover from health issues.

They wanted some basic things that were not perhaps considered basic when the pool was originally built back in the 80s. For example, they wanted private showers (or at least

a curtain), hot water, a second handrail to help the older people get in and out of the pool.

They weren’t asking for it, but they would have loved wheelchair access into the changing rooms. (One of the friends is recovering from a stroke and depends on wheels to get around.)

Most of them are in their 70s or 80s, they’ve paid their dues and feel they deserve the basics of safety and comfort. They would like to be able to get in and out of the pool without risk of injury. They would like to shower under hot water and not have people staring at them because the entire changing room is fully exposed. They’d like the floor tiles to be free of grunge. And a few other things that, as Metcalfe puts it, “you’d

Justice Henry reiterated these comments during this hearing.

Sadly, it could well be that Cassowary Coast ratepayers are funding these actions. Many will have heard gossip about the Cassowary Coast Regional Council spending substantial ratepayer monies on legal expenses relating to this defamation action and related cases.

How much, is a matter of speculation? Sums well in excess of $1m are alleged on social media.

This would be an enormous amount given the ratepayer base of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

To clear the air CCIN has approached Council with a series of questions relating to this whole saga and will report the response. This hopefully will provide ratepayers with some transparency and actual facts about the real quantum spent, and the process that councillors engaged in, and the information made available to them prior to authorising the spending of ratepayer monies.

In last week’s edition of the paper, we stated that Peter McCullagh was sacked by the CCRC. That was incorrect and we would like to apologise to McCullagh for any distress we caused him. In fact, his position was “disestablished”, essentially made redundant. We spoke with McCullagh, but the terms of his disestablishment package forbid him from elaborating. It does still leave the question unanswered, why did this position become redundant when he was only appointed back in March? His title was, Manager Marketing and Media. Is no one managing the marketing and media team? We’ll keep digging.

Community announcement – planned burns Smoke from Mount Mackay National Park The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a planned burn within Mount Mackay National Park Thursday 22/08/19, as part of the annual hazard reduction/ conservation management program for parks.

As a result, smoke may be

seen in the Merryburn to Carmoo area, adjacent the Tully to Mission Beach Road.

The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.

This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for the natural

regeneration of the endangered vegetation communities within the National Park.

Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions.

Cassowary Coasting from Art Deco to Red Bull Defiance Our unusual and prolonged wet season cleared up in time this month for two terrific drawcards for the Cassowary Coast – the Tropical Art Deco Weekend in Innisfail and the UFO Festival in Cardwell.

I congratulate the organisers of these ‘world apart’ events. People came from all over to join the locals in celebrating a nostalgic trip back to the 20s and a futuristic look into what may be out there.

The Art Deco flavour continues in Tully with Art Deco Breakfast on Butler and other activities on August 31. Tully and Mission Beach will host Red Bull Defiance on August 31 and September 1, with competitors coming from around the world. This is a big win for the Cassowary Coast - the first in Australia to host a Red Bull Defiance event. From the razzamatazz of art deco to the true grit of Red Bull Defiance, it is all about activating our local economy.

Last week, I attended the annual Northern Alliance of Councils conference in Bowen. Collectively the 27 member councils cover the area from Rockhampton to the Torres Strait and west to Mount Isa. The conference theme was disaster recovery and resilience, and we all had stories to tell, from cyclones to floods and bushfires.

It was good to share knowledge and experiences with other councils and learn from each other’s disaster management best-practice models.

Guest speaker and demographer, Bernard Salt, had many good things to say about the north, and his comments reinforced the direction this Council is taking in terms of tourism and agriculture.

Ratoon Crops

THIS time of year it is all happening for the local sugar cane industry.

Planting, Harvesting and ratooning.

It is now common to see young cane crops, about 60cm high growing up after a paddock has been harvested, with typically a lot of trash on the ground. These are called ratoon crops

and are one of the reasons the sugar industry is different to other cropping systems. Most grass crops grow for a set time span, are harvested and replanted. Sugarcane though has a series of repeat crops known as ratoons.

When I first came to North Qld from the Darling Downs and heard of sugar cane ratoons I thought the word was re-

turns! The word ratoon probably comes from the Latin word retonsus which means ‘to cut down or retono which means to “thunder back”. This is exactly what sugar cane does.

Once the plant crop is around 12 months old, it is harvested, and from the base of the root system, new buds germinate and grow into new stalks of cane. The speed and success of this process depend on the variety, the soil temperature, moisture and the presence of pests and disease in the soil.

This year we are seeing ratooning starting quite well because there is good

soil moisture even though the soil is still quite cold.

This time last year we were entering into a very dry time, with little rain between late July and late November and this did impact on ratooning towards the end of 2018. We see this slower ratooning in season 2018 as one of the reasons for the lower yields we have in 2019.

Ratoon crops cost around 30-40% of a plant crop so we try generally to get four or five ratoon crops in the one crop cycle. This wasn’t always the case; in the early years of the Australian sugar cane industry it was common just to have plant cane

and two ratoons, but the realities of today’s cost of production and economic returns means we need to grow the crop to at least 4th or 5th ratoon to be economically sustainable.

Generally speaking younger ratoons have less pests and disease to worry about but the variety and soil temperature/moisture always play a role in ratooning speed and success.

Most of our modern varieties bred by SRA to be good ratooners and part of our local variety development work monitors the ratoonability of these new varieties.

Blending Tradition and Technology at Indigenous Women’s Workshop Indigenous women are breaking new ground to help care for land and sea in the Cassowary Coast and the wider region.

Cardwell’s, Cindy-Lou Togo and Cairns’, Laurissa Mundraby were among the first female indigenous rangers in the Far North, and their trailblazing has inspired others to join the ranks.

Togo is involved in seagrass, turtle and dugong monitoring as part of her Girringun Aboriginal Ranger role, and says it’s rewarding to see seagrass slowly growing back over the eight years since Cyclone Yasi crossed the coast near Cardwell.

Mundraby is a tour guide for Maningalbay Ancient Tours, giving presentations at schools about the Djunbunji Land and Sea Ranger Program, and sharing the culture and connection to country.

The pair shared their stories at a recent three-day workshop in Tully for Wet Tropics indigenous women who care for land and sea.

They said becoming a ranger had “opened many doors” for them. Togo said it was enriching natural resource management to have indigenous rangers working side by side with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers and to see ranger practices and new technology blended with traditional knowledge including “women’s business”.

“Our elders are coming out with us to pass on traditional ways of managing the land, cultural places and activities,” she said. “That knowledge is also being passed on through a junior ranger program.”

The recent workshop

was organised by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The Wet Tropics Management Authority also supported the event.

Terrain NRM’s Vanessa Drysdale said workshops enabled indigenous women from all over the Far North to share knowledge and learn new skills.

“We had women coming together from Jabalbina in the Port Douglas-Cooktown region to Girringun in the Cardwell region and across to Jirrbal in the Tablelands area,’’ Drysdale said.

“They all work in roles that are largely filled by males…so this workshop was also about better supporting indigenous women with careers in natural

resource management.

We also visited cultural sites in the Tully region and workshopped ways to increase understanding of the cultural landscape, as well as the physical landscape, in the Wet Tropics region.”

Mundraby said learning, and capturing, the cultural knowledge of elders was an important part of the role, as well as sharing why it is important to look after country.

“Being able to go back to country, to home, as

St John’s School Silkwood Celebrates Science Week MARIA GIRGENTI

STUDENTS at St John’s School, Silkwood celebrated National Science Week which runs from August 10 - 18, with a fun-filled day last Tuesday focused on this year’s theme, Destination Moon.

Prep to Year 6 students were split into four groups and joined together to learn more about space exploration while also commemorating the 50th anniversary of humankind’s first moon landing.

“St John’s students love science and are fascinated with the solar system and what’s beyond our own planet Earth,” said Penelope Irvine, teacher and science week coordinator. “Students were able to use maker spaces to explore the science of rocket launches, designed and tested their own lunar lander, as well as built and programmed a LEGO rover to explore the moon.”

Year 6 students also provided science demonstrations for younger students, as part of their learning in science. “It’s fantastic we can use our Science Week grant to encourage our students love of science,” said Peta Bryan, Principal.

St John’s School, Silkwood, was one of 291 schools awarded with a National Science Week schools grant in 2019. These grants assist schools to run activities and events during the week and are coordinated by the Australian Science Teachers Association, with funding from the Australian Government through the Inspiring Australia program.

Students and staff at St John’s School dressed up for Science Week and took part in a range of activities last Tuesday.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, do science and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.

First held in 1997, National Science Week has become one of Australia’s largest festivals and last year a staggering 1.2 million people participated in over 2,100 events and activities.

In 2019, National Science Week events were held throughout Australia, from world’s first global Indigenous hackathon ‘INDIGI HACK’ to ‘Dr Dolphin’ and his bottlenose friends in Adelaide.

The festival is proudly supported by the Australian Government; partners CSIRO, the Australian Science Teachers Association and the ABC. Media sponsors included Cosmos, New Scientist and Science Illustrated.

BY now, most everyone has heard of Justin Flegler.

Born and raised in Tully, a passionate barefoot water skier, a record holder in the motorbike jump at the annual Bull N Bike event, now an electrical linesman at Sedgman Electrical, and a father to two kids, one of whom (Lucas, age three) is a huge Ninja Warrior fan.

With all he’d done in his past, and in good shape, why not apply to go on the show and become Lucas’s hero? Not that he expected to get on, but you hear stories like this in our region all the time. “I thought I’d give it a go.”

As well as impressing his son, Flegler hoped to put Tully, “the best place in the world” on the map. In episode four, he proudly shouted out from the top of the Golden Boot, “Welcome to Tully. I’m gonna show you how the Far North Queenslanders do it.”

In that episode, his mum and dad were in attendance in the studio shouting encouragement. Also there, his wife Rachel and an awestruck Lucas.

Flegler started off as he intended to go, fast and nippy, impressing the Nine commentators with his instinctual, graceful movements. He bounced through the various obstacles as if born for this, fearless and confident, wowing everyone with his time, blitzing through the early stages, significantly ahead of his competitors to that point.

Then he came to the warped wall. There were two

choices. He went for the more difficult one, the more rewarding one if he succeeded. Buoyed by his success to that point, he may have made a rash decision. At just 167 cm, Flegler is not a tall man and his first two tries left him a metre short. His final try was better, but still not close enough. He had work to do before the next round and he knew it. He went back to the farm and put in the time.

In episode seven, the semi-final, he looked pumped and confident before he started. In the early parts, fortune was on his side, barely overcoming the first few obstacles, but that seemed to gee Flegler up even more.

He was going for it, all or nothing. This time, he negotiated the warped wall on his second attempt, and his time was on track for the fastest time of the night.

He came to the salmon ladder. He had built his own version of this back on the farm at him to practice on.

The commentators were urging him to slow down. “It’s all right going fast, but you have to finish.” Sadly, his first attempt saw him fall off the ladder and into the water beneath him. His race was run.

“If I get the opportunity to do it again, mental preparation will be the key,” said Flegler.

For now, he is visiting the schools in the area to talk about his experience. Many of the schoolkids saw him on TV, so he’s a bit of a hero in these parts, if he wasn’t already. We think Nine will want him back next season.

Innisfail State School Celebrates NAIDOC Day MARIA GIRGENTI

INNISFAIL State School recently celebrated NAIDOC Day with a special community celebration at the school hall and undercover area.

After the Welcome to Country was delivered by Tania Ramsey, guest speaker Caitlin Watson, Innisfail State College captain spoke about being a leader and how anyone can become a leader if they so choose.

This was followed by a performance by Year 4 students before Brett Ambrum from Mamu Health Service spoke about the history of NAIDOC. School leaders provided explanations about the meanings of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, then the school leaders explained this year’s NAIDOC theme of Voice. Treaty. Truth. - Let’s work together for a shared future.

The underpinning theme acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in the decision-making of Australia’s democracy.

It also highlights our various First Nations’ desires for lasting and effective agreements such as Treaties, which cannot be achieved unless there is a shared, truthful understanding of the nature of the dispute, the history and how we got to where we stand.

An Elder and Prep student, Raylene and Tyreece had the honours of cutting the special cake, before elder Alf Joyce did a presentation on the history of boomerangs they used in the local area, followed by a whole school activity involving boomerangs.

ed a luncheon, while students enjoyed a sausage sizzle and fruit cups which were supplied by Deadly Choices through Mamu Health Service.

After lunch, lower students then took part in 25-minute rotational activities which included weaving with Jenny, games with Denzel and story time with Karen.

The upper students did weaving with Annette, games with Lachlan and Mr Joyce did storytelling and artefacts until the second break.

Celebrations continued after lunch in the hall, with a didgeridoo performance by Shannon Tanner and energetic performances by Innisfail State College boys and girls dance troupe, as well as Torres Strait Islander dancers.

Two local elders judged the colouring in and painting competition while Erin and Nyimah officially closed the NAIDOC Day celebrations.

Tully Golf Saturday started with terrible weather, but the clouds parted early on and turned into a great afternoon of golf at the Tully Country Club last weekend. Members and visitors played for prizes kindly donated by Tackle World Tully. A good field of almost 30 golfers turned out for the day. The winner with a nett score of 67 was Bob Williams who won on a countback from Dave Morris, also on 67 nett. In third place was Jon McKenzie on 69 nett. The nearest the pin winners were Mike Kennedy, Betty Favier and Peter Newland. A reminder to members as well as members of other local clubs that the annual Tully Open Championships will be held on the weekend of September 14 and 15.

Cardwell Golf Club On Thursday, seven ladies took to the course. Cheryl Adams, visiting from the cold south, won with 36, with Jackie Olditch on 35. NTP went to Jackie Olditch and approach shot was won by Cheryl Adams.

A 12-hole Sporters comp was played on Thursday. Jackie Olditch won (26) on a countback from Giff Pershouse, with Rowly Mott on 25 in third place. The rundown went to Peter Topen, Geoff Reading, Ian Ingram and Dean Beech. NTPs were Phil Pente-

Naming of Tully Golf Fairway

The fairway on the 5th hole at the Tully Golf Club has been officially named the Pat Mullins Fairway with a ceremony and unveiling of a sign held last Sunday at the club. The sign was unveiled by Pat’s widow, Helen, his family and many friends and club members. Pat was associated with the Tully Golf Club for over 40 years and was an original committee member when the club first opened. Although into

his 80s, Pat was still seen several times a week hitting a club down a fairway a few afternoons a week when age would not allow him to play competitively, showing his love for the game and the Tully Golf Club. The honouring of Pat Mullins acknowledges his long service to the Tully Golf Club, his love of the game and how highly regarded Pat was not only at the golf club, but in the broader Tully community.

INNISFAIL & District Netball Association Under 13s team returned home victorious in Division 1, Pool E at the Netball Queensland Nissan State Age Championships hosted

by Pine Rivers Netball Association.

The event attracted 260 teams from 46 associations where 2,600 players took to the courts over five days and 1,738 games were played.

IDNA committee decided to put the teams in the championship pool, so they could experience a different level of competition and know what is expected to compete at the top level.

Both teams played 13 games and after the first two days were regraded from Pool A to Pool E. Teams are regraded based on their performances and position across their respective pools, so they end up playing teams with similar skill levels.

All but one day, the girls played in rain which in Innisfail they are quite accustomed to, so they used the conditions to their advantage.

Team coach Leisa Spinella said the 10 girls played "out of their skin" and showed great improvement in all aspects of their game.

It was a very even contest, so they had to dig deep and fight hard in all games and notched up convincing wins.

Many of their games saw them down at half time and then come from behind and fight back to achieve the win.

"I noticed a real difference in their shooting, attack and defence. The win is an outstanding achievement as they all rose above fatigue, gelled as a team and displayed a determination to win," said Spinella.

For many, this was their first trip away from home, their parents and family, which can be daunting but Spinella felt they gained lifelong skills such as social interaction and independence.

There were multiple teams and on the second day, McGregor made an archway for the Innisfail girls to run through, which showed great team camaraderie and everyone felt like they were part of a big netball family.

"It was a fantastic experience as it helps to develop young netballers by providing them with life skills, friendships, makes them appreciative of their team mates and family," said Spinella.

Innisfail are very proud of the team's achievements, especially compared to other bigger associations who have 200-300 girls trial and field three teams, while their small association only had 13 girls try out.

The girls were up against tough teams such as Tweed, Mackay, Highfields and Underwood Park and also faced Cornubia who won the championships.

They also played Logan City, McGregor, Caboolture and Hervey Bay and against Metro they only lost by six.

Under 14s coach, Teresa Garnett, said all girls

played really well and only lost to overall pool E winners Caloundra by three and Cairns by one.

"The girls really enjoyed themselves and it was great experience for them on so many levels and for myself as a first time coach," said Garnett.

Chloe Garner from Under 14s was selected in the Marlins team who will travel to Adelaide in September.

Both representative teams especially wished to thank all the local and Babinda businesses for their support.

They also wished to thank IDNA for providing the opportunity and assistance for emerging netballers in the district to compete at top level, as well as the committee and parents for their fundraising and sourcing of sponsorship.

Tigers News with Shane Muriata IF WE are to recap what the road trip to Mareeba on Saturday night was for our Tully Tigers, then it’s a period I would not like to talk about again. Reserve Grade coach Steven Barrett and club President Anthony Emmi deserved better , but the proud 13 players who made the trek to Davies Park and played their hearts for a black and gold jersey should have statues erected at the entrance of the Tully Showgrounds. As far as that topic is concerned, I will leave it at that and pray that the last game of the 2019 season brings us some sort of joy when our Tigers host the might of the tablelands, the Atherton Roosters on Saturday night. Hopefully we at least get to sing the song with an unlikely result. I’ll leave that one up to the footy gods.

So I will move onto the NRL with much fanfare and joy when the Storms got beaten, Cows were average and the Broncos won again. I mean, how good were Raylene Leo’s team the Green machine? I heard some strange screaming on the night of the game, and just concluded it was Aunty Ray jumping around cheering her team home

in a thriller against one D Carneys Melbourne Storm. The Storms were doing everything in their power to sway the ref, crowd and anyone who would listen, but it ended up a no show. The night before was my favourite part when Brisbane ran over the top of the Penny Panthers, with Payne Hass scoring the try of the season? The Rabbits were shocked by the wooden spoon favourites Canterbury, while the Cowboys looked more like a team planning their mad Monday with the Gold Coast. The Roosters still looks like the team to challenge for the title, when they carved up the Warriors, the most unpredictable team since Subways added pineapple and beetroot to the menu.

Manly are still thereabouts, so I wouldn’t write them off yet, while the rest can start booking their Bali holidays.

With the season winding up, I will throw in my hats for the Dally Ms. There are probably only 4 players who should be the leading contenders, and they are Roger Tuavasa Sheck, Kaylyn Ponga, Mitchel Pierce , and a slice between Hodgson from the Raiders and maybe Jake Trobovabic. Ponga and Pierce form took a massive nose dive post Origin, as the campaign may have gotten the better of them, but both are starting to make a good run to the finish line. Jake Trob was my pick a few weeks ago, but Manly let themselves down a few too many times. If I was to pick a winner right about now, I wouldn’t be able to split RTS and Hodgson from the Raiders, because both are playing some outstanding footy.

In around the grounds sport news, the All Blacks

proved too good for our hapless Wallabies who promised so much after beating the Kiwis in Perth. Eden Park has been a grave yard for Dracula, Frankenstein and the Werewolves, so it came as too little to no surprise the other mythical creatures the Wallabies will ever look like winning there this century. On the upside of Aussie sport, our Aussies in the Ashes Cricket Test have been going very well, although we did end up a draw in the Second Test, we still lead the series 1-0 against the Poms who seem to only rely on quality players who were born elsewhere. I know we have Khawaja , but come on, these guys have Joffra Archer (West Indies) Ben Stokes (NZ) Tom Curran (South Africa) and Moen Ali (Pakistan) to name a few. I won’t complain too much, I will have the last laugh when one Tim Pain will lift the Ashes come the conclusion. If the Bronx are my favourite NRL side, then I can’t go past the Brisbane Lions in the AFL. With the bandwagon truly on the road after cementing our spot in the top four, we should be glad that at least a few more Qld teams are going better than ok in a national competition. Don’t forget to get out and support our local sports stars who will be in action right across our Cassowary Coast region. Whether its seniors or juniors, men or women, boys or girls, soccer, netball, footy, AFL, athletics or touch, just get out there and help out or cheer on your team. Many clubs across our great district really do appreciate our support, and the contribution we make to budding future superstars.

Weather ensured a quit time for bowls this week. On Thursday, 15 bowlers braved the showers to enjoy a novelty game. Saturday was reduced to 11 players. Hopefully, this week will see a big improvement in both the weather and the number of bowlers.

A reminder about the Annual meeting on the September 1. Meeting commences at 10:10am followed by a BBQ lunch and then social bowls. this is your opportunity to have your say in how your club should proceed in the coming 12 months.

South Johnstone Bowls Sunday social bowls had 14 bowlers take to the green, with day winners going to pairs team, Kevin Philips and David Leach.

The South Johnstone Bowls Club AGM was held last Sunday, and no changes were made to the Clubs Executive and Management Committee, except for the appointment of two new Club Patrons.

Congratulations go to both Elsie Sestero and Wally Kriesel for accepting the role of joint club patron.

Social bowls is on every Sunday and SJBC welcomes all members and non-members to join in the afternoon fun which kicks off at 1:00pm. Cost is $10 with smoko provided.

Innisfail Ladies Bowls Last Wednesday, Innisfail ladies enjoyed a perfect afternoon of bowls, and it was encouraging to have two of the club’s super veterans out on the green and still bowling competitively.

The winning team’s prize was a meat tray for each player.

FINALLY, a run of reasonable weather with opportunities to get out onto the water. Those that managed to travel out wide to fish the reefs were rewarded with some great catches of Coral Trout. The next two months are the prime time to catch trout so it’s definitely worth the effort if you get a break in the weather. There have also been good numbers of Spanish Mackerel being caught around the reef drop offs and pressure points.

Reports have been coming in of incredible catches of Large Mouth Nannygai and the occasional Red Emperor from the deep-water shoals between and wide of the main reefs.

This is fantastic fishing with most boats reporting some massive fish amongst the catch.

The shipping channel shoals have been fishing incredibly well for plenty of schoolsized Spanish Mackerel as well as school and the odd Spotted Mackerel. There have also been reasonable numbers of small mouth Nannygai and the occasional large mouth. I still think that Qld. Fisheries need to look at lowering the size limit I feel that releasing these small fish attracts and encourages sharks; how

many actually survive?

The inshore islands have been fishing very well for the normal bottom species such as Grass Sweet Lip and Coral Trout. I have been very surprised to hear of catches of five or six Trout per boat in some cases. The Spanish Mackerel have also been around in reasonable numbers with places such as Cathedral Rock and Forty Foot producing plenty of fish in the 10-to-20 kg mark. Live baits or trolling Ribbon Fish have been the most effective methods. As normal sharks have been a huge problem, you are lucky to land a Spanish at Forty Foot these days especially around the main bommie.

Unfortunately, the Spotted Mackerel have not been plentiful again this year with the normal grounds west of Dunk Island fishing extremely poorly for both Spotted and School Mackerel. The normal grounds east of the Barnard islands have been fishing better with reasonable catches of mainly school Mackerel.

Unfortunately, with the clump point boat ramp closed this has been a little difficult to get to.

We need Qld. Fisheries to look into what has gone wrong (where are the big schools of Spotted Mackerel).

I have heard a few reports of big Grunter being caught from the local headlands and islands. Several of the fish have been reported as being up to 70 cm. which is a real trophy

fish. I have never caught one over 70cm. however my partner, Kristina, managed a 71 cm. 2 years ago and keeps reminding me.

Despite the cool conditions, Barra and Mangrove Jacks are still being caught in the estuaries. Obviously, in these tough conditions they are not jumping into the boat so I take my hat off to the new generation of young gun anglers that have been sending the photos in to our web site. It seems the fish are taking both hard and soft bodied lures.

Good numbers of Pikey Bream are in the estuaries along with some nice flathead and some school sized Grunter. The larger Grunter should start to turn up in reasonable numbers in the coastal creeks over the next two months.

At the time of writing this report, which is very early in the week, the weather report is for light winds for this coming weekend. This could be a real opportunity to get out on the water. The fishing has been great (just don`t bother chasing spotted Mackerel east of Dunk island.) There have also been plenty of whale sightings.

This weekend the tides are reasonably small which will allow the water to clear up and create some great opportunities. Either side of the midday low tide will be perfect to chase Mangrove Jacks in the estuaries. The small run will also suit those wanting to fish for Fingermark and Grunter in the deep holes around the islands or in the Hinchinbrook Channel of an evening.

I USED to swim in Melbourne in the winter. I was young, fit, and the water in the outside pool was only 24 degrees Celsius. I’d swim between the lap dividers, almost touching the foot of the person swimming in front of me, as I sensed the person behind readying to pass if they could. The pools were crowded. And getting out was bracing.

Now living in Mission Beach, finding an activity I could do all year round for fitness, particularly during the hot summer months, was obvious: swimming. But I was not young or fit. I was overweight and struggling for breath when I exerted myself. I discovered the Mission Beach Aquatic Centre. It has a 25 metre outside pool, and depending on the time of day, not crowded, heated to about 28 degrees Celsius in winter and kept cool in summer. It also uses

the latest salt technology for keeping it clean. Wow, less chlorine.

What a find.

My first few swims left me breathless and exhausted. I was ploughing through the water.

Everything was an effort. The manager, John, pointed to one of the lifeguards, Jackson, who could give me a few pointers. I was immediately suspicious, how could a young person know how to coach me, ‘an old girl’ and all included in the entrance fee? Probably not very good, I thought. As the saying goes, ‘I ate my words’. Jackson had a been a national swimmer for New Zealand and was passionate about swimming and helping others to swim better. His knowledge about swimming techniques, getting fit and enjoying the water was impressive. I made a commitment to meet with him three times a week for swimming coaching.

now, and I’ve stopped ploughing through the water when I do freestyle. Jackson’s coaching has meant that I swim efficiently, and my style is my own. I can almost swim one kilometre in 30 minutes too. My fitness has improved and because I feel better in my body, I’ve lost some weight. The Mission Beach Aquatic Centre also offers Pilates and Hydrotherapy groups by Cassowary Coast Physiotherapy in the heated indoor pool. My balance has improved and I’m a lot more flexible. I also notice families bring their children to play and learn to swim.

And some seniors just walk up and down the pool, great exercise in the fresh air. And after a swim or a splash, the coffee shop makes fantastic coffee and a place to sit in your wet bathers.

Australian Roller Derby Women Take Second Place at Worlds SEAN DENT

BACK in May, we wrote a story about Tully Woman, Myra Wickham’s meteoric rise to stardom in the world of Roller Derby. She’d just been selected to represent Australia at the World Roller Games in Barcelona, a unique achievement for someone outside of the provinces of Victoria and NSW. Wickham reported back to us upon her return, and competing in the Games turned out to be just as exciting as qualifying for the national team. “We got there and had a couple of days to get over jet lag and see a bit of the city, and then it was off to work.”

International roller derby is not exactly a sport that is easy to predict because apart from the Americans (where the vast majority of the world’s roller derby players live and compete), little is known about the various national teams. In fact, leagues outside the USA only started forming in 2006, and the Americans have easily the world’s best collection of roller derby players.

Wickham said that made her excited to go up against them.

The Aussies opening match was against China, and it was an easy 248-17 win. Day two saw them facing India in the early match, and again they won convincingly, 256-10. They were not finished though, and had to skate against the home team of Spain that evening.

This match was tighter, but they pulled it out, 73-58, and they were feeling good about their chances against the USA the next night.

They put up a great show, but the Americans were just too strong and beat the Australian women, 211-72. They had the next day off to prepare for a huge final day when they would again face off against Spain, this time in the semi-final and playing for a chance to get to a rematch in the final against their probable opponents, the USA. This was something Wickham wanted badly. “The American team was the best of the best, and that’s who you want to play,” she said. “We knew it was going

to be hard, but also awesome, win or lose.”

The match against Spain was again a tight one, and again Australia took it, 95-77. The Americans had beaten India earlier by 335-77, so Wickham’s dream final was on.

The final day, unfortunately, went as pundits predicted and the Americans beat Australia, 224-70. Wickham took the defeat well because she felt they had skated a great match.

“The Americans were just too big a challenge, but we felt we skated our best matches against them, that made us proud.”

They were also exhausted, getting hardly any break to rest and recover. “By the last two games, our legs were heavy,” said Wickham, who was ranked in the top five jammers in the tournament.

It wasn’t all skating. They took the time to immerse themselves in the Barcelona culture and really enjoyed the people there.

On the men’s side, the Aussies also did well, coming third and getting the bronze medal.
