WE’RE FAILING AS AN INDUSTRY

Despite having all the ingredients in place for the delivery of a robust, fit for purpose Apprenticeship Programme, and a long-term solution to the installation skills gap, I am sorry to report that we’re failing when it comes to generating the employment opportunities. Whilst I’m ever the optimist (usually), the stark reality is that, despite having over 300 kids waiting to find an employer for the Fitted Interiors Apprenticeship, we’re struggling to find and connect with employers who are willing to commit to employing one.

How could this be? (I hear you ask)… well, there’s a number of potential reasons, but personally, I think it’s simply a lack of visibility and perhaps even a misunderstanding of what a modern Apprenticeship actually is.

So how can you help? First things first, let’s stop overthinking the problem and overcomplicating the solution. Businesses often want to help but struggle to find a way to make it happen and that’s because businesses try to think of imaginative ways to hire an apprentice.

In lots of instances, taking on an apprentice may be desirable, but may not actually practical. For example, if you are a builder’s merchant or retailer, you may support the idea of employing a Fitted Interiors Apprentice, but based on their business model, hiring one probably isn’t the right option and that’s often where the subject stumbles. But rather that stop there, a glaring way for businesses like these is to simply communicate loudly about the benefits of apprenticeships to their respective audiences, most who are usually SME tradespeople who are perfect employers!

Another thing that’s preventing SME’s from taking on or even considering an apprentice, is the perceived complexity of the process. Yes, it’s true, apprenticeships from an employers perspective isn’t ‘easy’ as such, but it is a proven way to grow your business whilst developing a legacy.

BiKBBI signposts two solutions for prospective employers… guidance on how to ‘do it yourself’ and for those who perhaps can’t or don’t want to, a ‘done for you’ proposition both come with associated costs and it’s important that businesses doesn’t assume that it’s free of investment (time and money). Do remember, however, that it is a proven way to grow and one that demonstrates tangible commercial benefits.

For more information, visit www.bikbbi.org.uk/ apprenticeships and find out how best we can support you to do the right thing.

Remember… we have no plan b, so if we’re to solve the challenge of the skills gap crisis, we must pull together and make sure the world knows that there’s a fit-forpurpose, oven ready solution waiting.

Welcome ...  62   60   74   50  48

As the publicity surrounding the cost-of-living crisis continues to dominate headlines it´s important that businesses of all sizes in our sector ´keep a perspective and remain optimistic.

The current crisis will inevitably affect us all, both financially and emotionally, so it´s really important to remember that the construction and home improvement sectors are usually amongst the first to bounce back from financial crises, despite typically being amongst the first to be impacted by economic downturns.

Also, on a positive note, it’s worth remembering that the KBB industry is still riding the crest of an unprecedented uplift in demand for home improvement and construction, which if managed smartly, will I hope, help businesses reduce the impact of any economic downturn - note that I am deliberately avoiding the dreaded ´R´word (recession).

Whilst I am no Martin Lewis, my advice to our readers is a bit of a no-brainer - and is two-fold.

Firstly, planning is key. Typically, a good sound business will have a five-year plan, but to weather the latest storm, businesses should shorten their forecasts and focus on the next 12-24 months. And for those that do

not plan – now is the time to start! It seems obvious, but it is worth just pausing for a second and evaluating your forward plan. For brevity’s sake, business plans can be written in pencil and businesses should be nimble and malleable.

Secondly, I do not believe that cutting your way to profitability is the answer. Working smarter will be far more effective overall, especially if the downturn is short lived. We must live in hope that any financial crisis is concluded promptly and remember that the health of our businesses, and indeed the industry, is as critical post-event as it is today… and we are not in great shape today!

As an example, training and development is one area of investment that is typically the first casualty in a financial crisis but, in my opinion, should become a focal point.

I believe that we should do everything in our power to preserve and protect learning and development, and the sustainable knowledge that it delivers. Any suspension of play in this area could result in decades of damage – this is time we simply cannot afford to lose. Does a business have to cut jobs, close outlets, and retract? Possibly yes, these are options, however, working smarter feels like a solution that will help us to better prepare for the future.

Take the hospitality sector, this is an industry that struggled to recover post-Covid. Why? Because it was amongst the first to make its people casualties. Employees left the industry in droves, but when things recovered, business owners realized that they were not going to return – at least not in the same numbers. Unskilled labour was the only option, and the net result is that businesses have struggled because standards have dropped.

So, rather than slump into anxious pessimism or begin panicking and make cutbacks, shorten your forecasts, be honest with yourselves, plan for twelve to 24 months and invest if necessary into your business and secure its future. Let us not undo the great work that has been achieved.

Heading up an institute like the BiKBBI I am in a unique position to say that the strength we have collectively is critical to getting through this short-term economic crisis. We should stick together, look out for each other, and have the faith in ourselves, our businesses and this amazing industry to weather the storm and bounce back stronger than ever!

NEW JUST GREY & DARK SPLIT OAK BY ROTPUNKT IS IDEAL FOR URBAN SPACES

Rotpunkt, has taken an urban approach to loft-style living with a twin-island kitchen in two new finishes:

Dark Split Oak: high-quality wood effect melamine door with synchronous pore and fine wood grain and HPL XT Just Grey: extreme-matt light grey finish and 1 of 14 shades of grey.

Designed to offer the same character as living room furniture, the combination of light grey and dark wood helps to create a social kitchen space where two block island units are bonded by a contemporary timber bar top for the ultimate in bar-height dining. The extra tall, double-stacked wall units house a set of double ovens in black, which help to emphasise the matt black sink and tap, pendant lighting, bar stools and wall of accessories.

Matt Phillips, Head of UK Operations at Rotpunkt says, “Our new Just Grey door colour when combined with our latest wood décor, Dark Split Oak is a great example of how you can

show restraint without losing any design impact and given how natural wood cabinets are trending strong, it makes sense to pair them with evergreen shades like grey and black.”

The wall-panel System, seen here in the new Dark Split Oak with complementary Matt Black accessories, is a wall-panel system that includes the new glassware holders, industrial hooks, two slimline storage caddies, plus three 2mm metal shelves, a tablet holder, and side-facing wooden knife block. Each accessory is designed to clip straight on to the panels for endless customisation, even the shelves can slide left and right. Panels are 19mm thick with 390mm space between the rails, so you can ensure this design feature blends in with standard door sizes. It also means users can apply a single full height panel or personalised arrangement made-up of multiple panels to better suit the space and individual needs.

NEW MANAGEMENT SYSTEM HAILED AS A SUCCESS

Sirius Buying Group, specialists in the electrical appliance and kitchen retail sectors has reported pleasingly successful results following the launch of its PIM (Product Information Management) System.

Designed to improve the online customer experience with a focus on driving more traffic to group members websites, the PIM System feeds the Sirius website with over 5,500 products, complete with technical specifications and visual assets from Approved Suppliers to the group. This is also available to all 185 plus Sirius members to utilise across their own websites.

Simon Cox, Director of Borshch Electric, Birmingham: “We have been the PIM system for 6 months now, and it has proven very useful to us. Before, we

were having to manually fill out product features, technical specs, and source images for each model of appliance booked into our system, which was extremely time consuming and not easy. The PIM system now does all of this for us - instantly, and has been an immense help by saving us time that we can use to focus on generating sales and new business instead.”

George Smith, Owner of A&B Smith Domestic Appliances, Craven Arms: “Before we signed up to the PIM system, we only had a very basic website with very few customers calling in. Now, working with PIM has led to thousands of products being listed on our website, with high quality images and detailed product information available to our customers. We now get calls every day and this is helping us bring in extra business, which

has been the case from the moment it went live on our site.”

Steve Jones, Managing Director at Sirius Buying Group adds “As a direct consequence of the PIM System, many more of our members are now benefitting from the most current and comprehensive product content on their websites, without the difficulty and time constraints of keeping it up-to-date themselves. Our Approved Suppliers are also seeing huge benefits, as product specs are added and updated in one place. We are delighted to be able to create a business model that is simple, productive, and future-oriented, helping the independent retailer to profit from the latest digital resources to boost their business.”

KITCHEN SHOWROOM RETAIL IS A ‘PHENOMENAL OPPORTUNITY’ SAYS AO BOSS

Online appliance giant AO is eyeing up the potential of being a major supplier to the independent kitchen specialist sector.

In an exclusive interview for the latest episode of the award-winning kbbreview podcast, Anthony Sant, the Managing Director of the company’s B2B arm AO Business, says that the kitchen retail market is a ‘phenomenal opportunity’.

“I think sometimes we all forget how large the sale of MDA is within the kitchen retail space,” he said. “Whether that be independents or multiples, it’s around 25% of the market and that’s certainly a space that AO wants to be in.”

Sant says that AO’s ability to collect and dispose of old appliances efficiently and safely for no extra cost is the big differential that, while perhaps not significant for retailers now, will become a major USP in the future as legislation forces them to be responsible for electrical waste.

“If people want to just buy boxes from us, we’re not that much different from everybody else,” he said. “But when you start looking a the bigger picture it’s a distinct proposition. People often lose sight of the fact that old electrical appliances are hazardous waste and they need to be taken away using a certified logistics business.”

Sant says that the government is turning its attention to the electrical waste produced by the kitchen retail market as it attempts to close the gap between the amount of products sold and the amount recycled.

“[The government] believes that by making retailers responsible for pick up from the customers home it improves this rate. For the likes of AO, John Lewis, Currys and Argos it’s quite straightforward as they’re predominantly distressed purchases but the biggest kept secret was how much MDA is sold in the kitchen space.

“However, it became very apparent during Covid when you’d go out for your walk and see skips with the old kitchen and appliances sticking out. So the kitchen retail space is hugely important for government to truly drive collections because it’s an area that’s being missed.”

You can hear the full interview with Anthony Sant on the latest episode of The kbbreview Podcast. In it he also discusses appliances shortages, including whether AO gets priority over other retailers when products become available…

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR INDUSTRY TO RESPOND TO MANDATORY WATER LABEL CONSULTATION

The deadline for retailers and industry figures to respond to the government consultation on introducing compulsory water labelling closes in just over a month.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) are asking for views on introducing a water label across the UK for products like taps, showers, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines.

UWLA managing director, Yvonne Orgill, is urging the KBB industry to complete the short survey to make their opinions be heard by November 25.

Orgill said: “We must not miss this opportunity to make our views known or we risk having a mandatory label imposed that does not meet the needs of the industry. Those that already support the Unified Water Label and know that it is robust, already established and growing, can reinforce our message to Government that a mandatory label is not the best solution.

“We welcome the government’s commitment to reducing water waste but do not consider it necessary or cost effective to develop a new labelling system when one is already in place.”

UWLA managing director, Yvonne Orgill

The Unified Water Label that has been identified within the ISO Standard 31600:2022 as best practice, and the Defra has stated in the consultation document that their approach is based on this standard.

With a worldwide label that covers 14 differing product categories and a database that includes 14,000 individual products, The Unified Water Label is regularly accessed by 10,000 architects and specifiers. The label has also been used on 150,000 building or refurbishment projects internationally.

Orgill said: “We believe that a mandatory label will be significantly more expensive for the industry than a voluntary one and that a mandatory system will take away the flexibility that the industry now has to operate a system that meets their needs. They will also be exposed to an enforcement body that will have the power to impose sanctions, under the proposed mandatory scheme.

“We are asking the members and supporters to work with us for the benefit of the industry, and respond before the consultation closes in in just under 6 weeks’ time.”

HOW INSTALLERS CAN OFFER CUSTOMERS THE NEWEST TRENDS WITH ADDED EASE

As retailers and designers look ahead at what to stock in order to meet evolving customer demands in 2023, Elliott Fairlie, Product Manager at Bushboard, discusses the top trends set to dominate the market and how installers can use compact laminate to achieve the desired look without a complete kitchen overhaul.

Although the evolution of home interiors trends may have slowed somewhat over the last two years in particular, now postpandemic life has returned to a sense of normality, design trends have begun to re-emerge. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of these are a by-product of the ‘work from home’ lifestyle, with a number of themes emerging as a result of many people spending a lot more time at home.

Assessing emerging trends now gives installers time to prepare their product offering and reflect popular themes as we head into 2023. Ultimately, it’s important to remember in this current climate of everrising energy prices, that cost-effectiveness

will be a big priority for many. This is where it is important to consider how emerging trends can be adopted even when a full kitchen overhaul isn’t possible, by refreshing prominent elements, such as worksurfaces, splashbacks or upstands, to name a few. So, what exactly are the trends we’re set to

see dominate the interiors space next year, and how can installers adopt them without breaking their customer’s budget?

Bringing the outside in

The continued rise of remote working means many still find themselves spending more time inside their homes than they may have done as recently as three years ago. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the inclusion of natural elements in the kitchen has grown in popularity as homeowners make up for lost time spent in the great outdoors. Organic wood features complemented by plants and foliage can help bring the outside in, but solid wood kitchen tops can become an expensive purchase. Bushboard’s Omega range offers a number of wood finishes, giving the customer a choice of light or dark and natural or panelled looks for a reduced cost and added easy maintenance.

Creating a multipurpose space

Evolving home design and function has led to the emergence of multipurpose kitchen spaces. No longer just a room for food preparation, the kitchen has established itself for many as a place to socialise and often work. Complete kitchen remodels can be expensive, but an alternative is the combination of thick and thin kitchen surfaces to create segregated areas for different purposes.

Combining different thicknesses of compact laminate surfaces from product offerings such as Bushboard’s Zenith range, can add a new level of depth and variety to the kitchen’s practical space, without having to reconfigure the room.

Rich and Warm

As colder months approach and days get shorter, warm rich tones within the home can help create a feeling of comfort. When brought into the kitchen, the colour scheme can provide an air of chic and elegance, while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. This trend is synonymous with dark woods and richer hues which can be added into the kitchen in multiple ways through work surfaces, wall art, splashbacks and furnishings.

Bushboard’s Alloy splashback range offers up designs such as Walnut Geometric, which adds the element of classic wood with easy fit and maintenance.

Keeping up to date

With so many emerging trends coming into the market as we head into 2023, it’s the perfect time for installers to take advantage and update what they offer to customers to meet these demands. Compact laminate kitchen worksurfaces are a great option for those looking to adopt the latest trends without having to splash out on a full refurb.

New marble

Marble has always been synonymous with luxury, but the move towards marble with warmer hues and subtle veining is proving popular among homeowners eager to bring neutral tones into their kitchen. Many associate the stone with extravagance and expense, but with alternative solutions on the market such as compact laminate, it’s possible to achieve the look without breaking the bank.

Textured black

The use of black within the kitchen has been a popular trend for some time now, with the colour being applied to elements such as taps and highlights to bring a touch of class to the room. The look has now begun to evolve, absorbing a range of textures and finishes to create depth and emphasis on senses of touch and feel.

Work surfaces and splashbacks offer themselves up as an ideal way to add these black highlights to a kitchen and Bushboard’s Zenith worktop in Noir Fusion is a ngreat example of how black can be enhanced with the addition of a speckled texture.

KITCHEN KIT GOES FUNGI WITH MUSHROOM PACKAGING

With a key focus on sustainability for 2022, Kitchen Kit from BA is now providing a packaging solution that doesn’t compromise on quality but is also environmentally friendly. The company´s flat-pack cabinets were previously packaged with polystyrene based corners, so it was vital that new alternatives would need to be durable to eliminate potential damage to cabinets in transit.

To achieve these goals mycelium packaging has been introduced to protect flat pack cabinets reducing polystyrene & plastic use.

After numerous trials Kitchen Kit found using Mushroom® Packaging technology supplied by the Magical Mushroom Company® was the way forward. Using this method, BA is able to achieve a new alternative based corner protector for their flat-pack cabinets. These based corners are not only durable but they are fully biodegrade and do not

negatively impact the planet as the mycelium product simply breaks down in a compost bin or the earth, which then provides nutrients to the soil.

Barry Smith, Group Purchasing Manager says: “At BA, we focus our operations on sustainability and becoming more carbon neutral. By introducing the fully biodegradable mushroom-based corner protectors to our flat-pack cabinet packaging we are on track to achieving our sustainability goals of reducing overall plastic use and polystyrene from our business for this year.

“The transition to mycelium packaging has been a huge success and we look forward to seeing how the Magical Mushroom Company can support us further in becoming a more environmentally friendly company.”

Established in 1990 and operating from three state-of-the-art factories; one in

Cookstown Co. Tyrone and two in Yorkshire at Rotherham and Doncaster, BA is a manufacturer of factory-built, bespoke, and made-to-measure kitchens, bedrooms and specialist components.

BA´s new mushroom based corner protectors are on all flat-pack cabinet packaging. Subsequently, the use of polystyrene has been reduced at the Rotherham factory. The transition has been positively received from their customer base as they appreciate using high quality products from a company that is passionate about sustainability. BA plans to reduce overall plastic and polystyrene usage across their sites and is exploring how the Magical Mushroom Company® can assist further in achieving a greener future for the business.

STEAMING, STYLISH WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SAFETY

Abode, has introduced Pronteau HotKey®: a range of 4 IN 1 instant hot water taps with new PROBOIL.4E boiler, which are steaming, stylish and safe. All products within the Pronteau HotKey® range offer 4 functions: 75-98° instant filtered steaming hot water, refreshing filtered cold water and everyday hot and cold water.

If you are wondering why 98°C hot? The company explained that during development, it considered every aspect of safety, both for the dispensing of steaming hot water and the maximum temperature for stored water in the boiler. By dispensing steaming hot water from 75°C to a maximum 98°C, Pronteau steaming hot water taps are fully compliant with Part G(3) of the UK Building Regulations. Plus, all Pronteau steaming hot water taps are insulated which means the water is hot at the end of the spout, but the outside surface remains cool to the touch.

The new Pronteau Hot Key® tap range offers an array of contemporary designs including swan and quad spout monoblocs in a selection of on-trend finishes, and unique 3-part designs. There are 5 stylish finishes available across the range including Chrome, Brushed Nickel, Matt Black, Antique Brass and Brushed Brass.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINISHING TOUCHES

32 Kitchens

Whether you’re a designer or installer, kitchen details are key to achieving a wow factor and a happy customer. But when a busy order book and a shortage of skilled installers combine, it is crucial that manufacturers like us keep evolving with products and services that make the job easier.

From time saving hardware that aids precision, to new lighting solutions with added benefits for customers and installers, there are a variety of solutions available that help enhance the quality of finish and longterm performance.

HEAVY-DUTY HINGES

While aesthetics is always crucial to the wow factor, the ‘feel’ of a kitchen is transformative too meaning elements such as hinges shouldn’t be overlooked. With this in mind, we have recently launched Metalla, a collection of hinges of varying functions and price points. The result of three years of global research and development, the range was created with quality and long-term performance firmly in mind.

The Metalla 310 hinge is the first to launch to the UK market and has been specially designed to give kitchen manufacturers and installers a highquality choice, whatever the application. The 310 offers a large assortment mid-range hinge suitable for wide angle openings, post hinge, and 30 or 45 degrees opening. It is available in softclose or a non-soft close variant and is ideal for standard installations such as common 110˚ angle openings.

While in the UK, residential and commercial hinges need to meet BS 6222-2:2009+A1:2017 Level H, we have tested the Metalla 310 hinge –regardless of application – to at least 40,000 cycles and 48 hours against corrosion resistance in accordance with EN 15570 level 2 / LGA quality certification. It also comes with a 25 year guarantee, meaning installers can be confident they are providing complete reliability, ease of use and enduring quality.

MAKING QUALITY EASIER

In the world of kitchen cabinetry, one of the biggest changes is constructing furniture with multiple elements quickly, but also robustly, to give the customer the solid finish they expect.

To help improve this process, at Häfele we have focused on making furniture construction as tool-free as possible. An example of this is Ixconnect CC 8/5/30, a claw connector for wooden drawers that can be used without dowels.

Because it has an innovative claw, it compacts the chips in the front panels of wooden drawers for quick fixing of panels and sides over 12 mm. When combined with a rear panel connector (Ixconnect RPC D 5/24) that clamps the rear panel with the side walls, Ixconnect CC 8/5/30 reduces the number of drill holes needed, cutting down assembly time and giving complete precision. It’s also entirely concealed once in place improving overall aesthetics.

Products like Ixconnect might be simple pieces of hardware, but they make a big difference. In fact, it halves the number of holes required and can reduce assembly time by up to 70 per cent, while also ensuring a precise and robust join. As well as developing hardware to improve accuracy and ease of fitting, we

are also developing services that remove the hard work for installers entirely. Häfele to Order is a bespoke service where users can specify a range of products to an exact size, quantity and finish, before they are cut, packaged, labelled and delivered to site ready to use. One of the newest additions to the service is handmade bespoke timber drawers.

Expertly crafted timber drawers are the epitome of a quality finish, but they take skill, care, attention, and, critically, time, which isn’t always available. Through the service, customers can order handmade, solid timber drawers personalised to their needs and complete with full dovetail joints, in around a two to threeweek turnaround.

The Häfele bespoke timber drawer service is completely made to order, meaning customers can tailor their requirements against a long list of design and personalisation options. These include choice of timber, finish and size, along with shaped sides - flat or stepped top - and notching and drilling for runners. Saving valuable time, while still delivering exceptional quality, these handmade wooden drawers are the perfect way to achieve a beautiful finish.

33 Kitchens
Jamie Mclaren, business development manager at Häfele UK explores products and services that can help installers achieve a winning finish.

HERO HANDLES

Alongside hinges, handles – and equally handle-less profiles – are critical to achieving a kitchen that looks and feels exceptional. The choice of handle truly cements the overall aesthetic of a kitchen and contributes to its overall functionality, thus warranting special consideration.

Handles can be used to enhance a style: for example, making a minimalist kitchen feel sleeker in design, or to build contrast by creating a standout feature. But when advising your customer on handle shape, ensure they are considering practical elements too. Does the customer have specific mobility requirements meaning easy-grip styles are preferred? Is their kitchen a compact space meaning more streamlined handles will give them those extra few millimetres? Think about what will go inside the cabinet too. Will the handle need to open a heavy larder and require robust weight distribution?

To ensure installers and retailers can offer customers a handle to suit their tastes and needs, Häfele has curated

HIGH-LIGHTING

For a variety of reasons, lighting can be overlooked when planning a kitchen design, either left as an afterthought or not truly considered at all. However, lighting is not only essential to creating a functional space – making task areas more useable for example – but can transform the look and feel of a kitchen too with different colours and ‘temperatures’ of light affecting the warmth or coolness to cabinetry finishes.

Lighting is also an area where customers are becoming more discerning, with many homeowners now requesting that LED strip lighting for plinth and under cabinetry areas appear dot-less with lighting chips not visible.

one of the largest handle ranges in the UK market.

The collection features a range of styles from simple profile handles for a ‘barely-there’ look and linear styling, to a practical cup handle that gives a heritage finishing touch. There is also a variety of textures available included popular knurled handles with subtle

texture that is only seen and felt closeup and natural finish options like wood that bring warmth and uniqueness into a room for added personality.

As well as offering a spectrum of styles, colours and textures, handles are also chosen for their quality ensuring their wow factor continues long beyond their initial fitting.

For installers, this previously has been a challenge, with resourceful fitters routing profiles to a depth where standard LED strips appear continuous once in situ to answer customer desires. However, routing in this way creates weakness, and especially in slim profile worktops that are becoming more on-trend, meaning the integrity of the material can be compromised.

Recognising the need for a better solution for such situations, we have just introduced Loox LED ‘chip on board’ strip lighting that gives a dotless appearance. With 480 diodes per metre, this new strip lighting offers the improved aesthetic customers are increasingly asking for while still being

easy for installers to fit. Like the rest of Häfele’s Loox LED lighting range, these new chip on board strips are part of a modular plug and play system and are simply fitted by removing the high bond backing and sticking as required.

The new additions are available in monochromatic options with two warm and two cool white light temperatures, plus they connect to a range of controls via our app or wireless switches, giving the homeowner full command over all aspects of their lighting. They also allow customers to set their own brightness for a truly personalised experience that is activated at the touch of a button.

MAKING BATHROOMS BEAUTIFUL THE HISTORY, HIGHLIGHTS AND HOPES FOR
THE
FUTURE AT H i B
Warren Ginsberg, HiB Chairman and Founder (Pictured left) & Robert Ginsberg, HiB Managing Director (Right) Genesis Carbon Grey with BB Trim

‘Innovation’, is the word that HiB Chairman and Founder Warren Ginsberg uses to describe HiB. It’s a word that resonates the company’s expanding workforce, who have formed a strong community working together for more than 30 years to make bathrooms beautiful.

From the company´s Head Office in London, its Inspire House national distribution centre in Tamworth to the recently opened Dublin office, HiB combines cutting edge product design with new technology, to change the way we think about bathrooms and the part they play in our lives – a vision the company has held since its birth in 1990.

Both Warren and his son Robert, who is HiB’s Managing Director, have been steering the company through the past three decades to where it is now in 2022, a renowned bathroom brand with a plethora of honours to its named including a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, BKU Awards and Best Company To Work For accreditation.

It has been said that ‘Growth is never by mere change; it is the result of forces working together’ and this applies to HiB. From humble beginnings to an international supplier of bathroom products with Royal seal of approval, at the heart of the business is the collective passion for product innovation and the drive to move forward with the times and deliver.

Recognised for a number of bathroom ‘firsts’ this once quietly successful business is now making waves across the industry, bringing new ideas and technologies to the table that have put HiB at the forefront of the bathroom sector. More recently, the company’s pioneering attitude to product development has helped the company to gain its recognition as a finalist in the Society for British and International Design award, an accolade HiB’s board of directors hold as one of the company’s biggest achievements.

This said, it wasn’t always design, precision illumination and the latest technology that set HiB apart from its rivals, as Warren remembers: “The very first product I sold was a Joshua 70cm x 50cm plain bevelled mirror, and to this day it remains a good seller!

“As technology has developed and the needs of consumers has changed, we’ve worked hard to make sure we design products which fulfil a genuine need. One of my favourite creations is undoubtedly the heated pads for mirrors, which were originally developed by HiB to reduce condensation and are now a standard feature for mirrors and cabinets around the world.

“Over the past 3 decades we’ve established a great product development team who do a lot of market research to create eye-catching designs, ones that make a statement in the bathroom and I think it’s our continuous pursuit of producing new, innovative ideas which has helped us to build HiB’s reputation as a forward-thinking company.”

HiB now boasts a core team of more than 150 employees, who operate across the three sites. Upon joining the company, each staff member is introduced to the company vision, which drives all decisions within the business and puts emphasis on not only producing innovative, creative solutions which make bathrooms beautiful but also making a substantial difference to the lives of HiB’s people, partners and the world we live in.

It is this drive to make a real difference and the collaborative, supportive environment for staff, which has placed HiB among the top employers in the Midlands. With a consistently high staff retention rate and award-winning workplace culture, HiB ethos of nurturing talent has been the foundations for the company’s ongoing success.

"To now be able to see our business grow and develop whilst retaining its original core values is wonderful. The innovation, design and quality of products available in the bathroom sector makes it a fantastic business to be in."

“Building an outstanding team of committed people who are now all part of the HiB family, has always been of utmost importance to us,” says Warren. “What some people may not realise about HiB is that our success is simply down to the team and hard work – plus some innovative thinking! Since its inception, HiB has been, and continues to be, a lot of fun and enjoyment. We have a clear vision for growth and that relies on quality, service and team-work being the driving forces.

“Robert, who now manages the company, is a great leader and team builder and has ensured that HiB is always moving with the times. Markets are always changing, but I only see great potential for our company for growth and development both in the UK and abroad in the years ahead.”

As well as undergoing a rebrand in 2016, the business has also expanded from its core expertise in illuminated mirrors and cabinets, into new product areas, with the launch of Novum Furniture in 2014, Accessories in 2019 and Genesis Fitted Furniture in 2022.

Each product is developed with the same attention to detail and aim of making bathrooms beautiful, offering customers a choice of styles that transform a bathroom of any size.

The development of each product range is part of HiB’s ongoing strategy for growth and is key to offering installers and their customers the very best selection of designs with fantastic customer service to match.

During the creation and production, ease of fit and straightforward design is always a main criterion. Genesis, HiB’s most recent product launch, features pre-assembled units, pre-drilled pilot holes and a simple ordering to make each stage of installation easier. There is also a carefully created range of finishes and accessories to ensure that any desired look can be achieved without added complexity.

“Over the past 30 years it has been the company’s goal to build a trusted brand that has a major presence in the UK and overseas markets, built on service, service and service,” says Warren.

“To now be able to see our business grow and develop whilst retaining its original core values is wonderful. The innovation, design and quality of products available in the bathroom sector makes it a fantastic business to be in and one of the best things about it is the friendliness that abounds in the industry, from competitors to retailers and installers. I have no doubt that the next chapter for the business will be equally as exciting.”

AO LAUNCHES FUNDED GAS APPRENTICESHIPS FOR THE FIRST TIME

For Gas Safety Week, online electricals retailer AO has announced that it has introduced funded gas apprenticeships for the first time to both grow its fleet of qualified engineers and invest in training.

Following the introduction of the new apprenticeships, AO is now successfully upskilling and training several cohorts, many of whom were selfemployed drivers contracted by the company. For the first time, the retailer has launched the fully funded course aimed at both current employees and contracted drivers, which provides an accessible pathway to the Level 3 gas qualification. This runs alongside a new apprenticeship funded by the government levy, which is open to anyone with a full driving license.

Lynne Wood, Director of Service Delivery at AO Logistics, said: “I’m so proud that we can now invest in providing accessible opportunities by offering these gas apprenticeships for the first time. Many of the contracted drivers and electrical installers have jumped at the chance to train in gas, and I’m delighted that we can support their future careers. With more qualified gas engineers on hand, we can also make our leading delivery and installation proposition even better for customers.”

Running for up to 16 weeks, the fast-track programme consists of both online and classroom teaching, as well as on-the-road experience to quickly upskill participants. The AO funded scheme runs alongside an apprenticeship funded by the government apprentice levy that offers comprehensive

training in driving a 3.5 tonne van, gas qualifications and functional skills across 16 months.

Edward Knight first crossed paths with AO in 2018 when he was contracted for driver services before training as an electrical installer and he is now participating in the first cohort of the gas apprenticeship. He said: “I’m really chuffed that I’ve had the chance to do my gas training, which adds another string to my bow when it comes to my career. I’ve always considered doing an apprenticeship, but it was never an option due to the cost – so I jumped at the chance when I saw that AO was offering to fund it and I’ve really enjoyed the training so far.”

As part of AO’s installation offering, the engineers

disconnect the old appliance at the point of delivery and safely install the new one with a full health check. The engineers are accredited to the highest standards, with Gas Safe registration, NICEIC electrical accreditation and membership to CHAS, the UK’s leading provider of compliance and risk management solutions.

AO acquired the two-person delivery company, formerly Expert Logistics, in 2009 and it now offers next day delivery to every UK postcode seven days a week on its range of 12,000 electrical products.

VITRA CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN THE UK

International bathroom brand VitrA, is celebrating 30 years of supplying bathrooms in the UK.

The British bathroom world was very different 30 years ago when Levent Giray and his team brought VitrA to the UK. VitrA was one of the first European manufacturers to break into the market which was dominated at the time by British names by virtue of its quality manufacturing, strength in domestic market leadership and innovative production capabilities.

At the time of VitrA entering the UK market in the early 1990s, the company already had 30 years of experience in ceramic manufacturing, ten years of experience in brassware manufacturing, and an enviable portfolio of products and the company immediately demonstrated its commitment to the UK by acting like a British manufacturer instead of an importer. This was apparent by the fact that when VitrA brought new design styles into the UK, products were always produced according to UK plumbing systems. It also designed products explicitly suited to the British market, such as the Chelsea and Chartwell ranges. The company was also one of the first non-British manufacturers to become a member of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, reflecting its sense of duty to the UK industry.

Appearances at key exhibitions like ISH and Interbuild, showing innovative, quality products, won VitrA support early on among independent retailers. Ranges like the company´s Riva, Pluto, and Berwick are still remembered by retailers who built their business on these and other ranges.

VitrA has been at the forefront of key bathroom design developments, including wall-hung pans, which the brand has manufactured since the late 1980s. It was also one of the first to introduce an affordable, aesthetically pleasing shower toilet option into the UK market. Not only is the popular V-Care shower toilet priced incredibly competitively, but it's also virtually indistinguishable from a regular wall-hung toilet.

VitrA has always had a strong focus on innovation. In the early days, the brand pioneered advanced manufacturing technology, including the integration of CAD software. In 2011, the company opened its Innovation Centre. This state-of-the-art research and development centre produces and trials new products and technologies for international markets and specifically for the UK market, always considering the UK demands for plumbing, water variations and space requirements. Several unique solutions, such as VitrA Rim-ex rimless technology and VitrA Hygiene ceramic glaze,

have originated from the Innovation Centre.

Continuous investment over the thirty years allowed VitrA to lead manufacturing processes and remain hugely flexible in logistics and supply. In the UK, this was enhanced by building relationships with the strongest British distributors – early on with Scorpion and later Barwick and Davroc.

Over the years, VitrA has worked hard to build retailer relationships and introduce the brand to the British public. It began its Showrooms of Excellence programme in the late 1990s, which continues today as an integral part of the sales strategy. These longstanding and effective partnerships form a network of retail experts that keep VitrA close to the marketplace.

Building on the success of the retail market, VitrA also began to supply to the commercial market over 20 years ago. Within the first five years, the company won the contract for the new Heathrow T5 terminal and created the K basins specifically for this project. VitrA has also nurtured relationships within the hospitality sector, including IHG & Hilton, leveraging the company's global presence.

VitrA has built several longstanding relationships within the residential contracts

market with architects, developers and housebuilders. In the early 2000s, VitrA started working with Urban Splash on projects including Moho, designed by shedkm, and Chips, designed by Will Alsop. Recent residential projects for VitrA include The Cocoa Works apartments by Latimer and the Phoenix apartments by Capital and Centric.

VitrA has developed a reputation for outstanding design. In the early 2000s, VitrA launched a collaboration with Welsh designer Ross Lovegrove.

The range, called 'Istanbul', was and still is unlike anything else on the market the company claim. For the UK, this was the start of a long history of designer collaborations, culminating in the launch of Liquid with British designer Tom Dixon last year.

Today, VitrA operates over 2,000 sqm of warehouse space in Oxfordshire and has a team of over 60 people. The company continues to grow from strength to strength, addressing the industry's new challenges and changes in buyer behaviour.

Last year VitrA opened a showroom in London for architects, designers, and

specifiers, marking a new milestone in the company's journey. VitrA London is not only a space to showcase products, but also to engage with the community through events, workshops, and installations.

Levent Giray, who retired as Managing Director (end of July 2022) commented before leaving, "It is fair to say we have come a long way in three decades. Brands pre-eminent when we arrived have largely disappeared. Internet sales and the IoT are pervasive, with companies interacting directly with consumers in ways unimaginable back then. The future is exciting. Leaving VitrA after 30 years is bittersweet, but in the skilful hands of Steve Breen and the team, I know that VitrA will continue to build on its reputation for good design, high-quality products and top customer service."

Managing Director Steve Breen says, "I'm delighted to be leading VitrA through this exciting next chapter. VitrA is in fantastic shape with a great team of staff and management. The foundations built over 30 years mean we are well placed for the next 30."

WILSONART

LATEST SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

Wilsonart Engineered Surfaces, manufacturer and distributor of highpressure kitchen and bathroom laminate surfaces, has reinforced its commitment to reducing its environmental impact with the launch of its latest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.

The global manufacturer, whose UK brands include Bushboard, Shore Laminates, Resopal and Polyrey, has released its Acting Beyond the Surface report to reveal the series of ongoing improvements it has made over the last 12 months as it looks to achieve its sustainability goals. The launch comes amidst mounting pressure for the building products industry to mitigate its environmental impact

Among the highlights is Wilsonart’s incorporation of 23% post-consumer recycled content (PCRC) on average into its HighPressure Laminate (HPL). Often positioned as a viable alternative to natural stone surfaces, the manufacturer’s HPL also produces 58% less embodied carbon than granite and 46% less than the industry average.

Noting the impact of adhesives on the surfaces category across multiple markets including kitchens and bathrooms, the last 12 months has also seen Wilsonart manufacture adhesives that are 100% free of added ureaformaldehyde and methylene chloride.

As well as reporting performance to date, the Wilsonart ESG report also outlines new operational, product and supply chain goals, deepening the company’s commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.

These targets include:

Maintain a lower landfill-toproduction weight ratio of 10% or lower every year

Increase the amount of recycled manufacturing waste by 5% yearon-year

Decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill by 5% year-on-year

Increase overall post-consumer recycled content in HPLs by 40% by 2025

Over the coming year, Wilsonart also plans to analyse the embodied carbon in its HPL from cradle to grave. The company claims that this makes it the first manufacturer in the industry to formally assess its impact on the downstream supply chain in order to provide customers with a new level of transparency and set the bar for embodied carbon in the HPL market.

On the launch of the ESG report, Tim Pearson, President of EMEA at Wilsonart said, “We’re proud to be able to contribute to the meaningful changes Wilsonart Engineered Surfaces is committed to on a global scale, at a time when the building materials industry is working hard to consider the impact it has on its surroundings and its people.”

Tim continued, “As a manufacturer, we have implemented a number of changes and targets with the aim of making a positive difference beyond the specific features of our products. As with the development of our products, however, innovation will be crucial if we’re to continuously improve our performance and set a high bar for others to aspire to. By being so transparent with our reporting, we hope to help industry stakeholders, including our customers, to make decisions that will benefit them and their organisations in the long term.”

ARE BOILING WATER TAPS SAFE?

Quooker taps dispense boiling water as an aerated FLow rather than a solid jet, meaning water feels hot but not scalding to touch

Boiling water taps have grown rapidly in popularity over the past ten years. Something that was originally viewed by many as an unnecessary luxury item has now become a household essential for millions across the globe.

Concerns about safety was once a significant factor in dissuading people to invest in a boiling water tap, and to this day, one of the most frequently asked questions when renovating a kitchen is ‘is boiling water straight from the tap safe?’. With constant innovation, boiling water taps on the market today are completely safe to use. With userfriendly, in-built safety mechanisms, such as Quooker’s patented double push and twist, that make it virtually impossible to turn on boiling water by accident, they are ideal for every household.

Moreover, boiling water taps are static, immovable objects which cannot accidentally be spilled or tipped over. The rotatable spouts also allow users to aim precisely, minimising the risk of spills. On the other hand, kettles and pans of water on the hob can easily tip over.

Last but not least, Quooker taps dispense boiling water as an aerated flow rather than a solid jet, meaning water feels hot but not scalding to touch, should any accidental contact occur. The heavily insulated casing prevents heat from escaping and ensures the tap is not hot to touch when in use, unlike a kettle, which presents a far higher burn risk.

When it comes to fitting any type of flooring it’s important to get to know your customer and their lifestyle to determine whether they are they choosing the right flooring for a particular environment. Ask yourself, are you offering the customer their forever floor?

GETTING IT RIGHT FIRST TIME TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL FLOORING INSTALLATION

Gail Alcock, Product Director for Malmo™, offers some sound advice to help installers achieve a successful Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring installation the first time around.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) offers a host of benefits thanks to its ability to deliver durability, stylish looks, easy installation and low maintenance. Design choices have continued to evolve and LVT now offers a level of authenticity like

never before, saving valuable time when compared to laying stone, tile or real wood flooring.

But, like anything, it’s important to get to know the product and learn how to install it correctly to avoid potential problems further down the line. Crucially, it’s important to understand the differences between rigid click and stickdown formats and the environments where they’re best suited.

GET TO KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER

When it comes to fitting any type of flooring it’s important to get to know your customer and their lifestyle to determine whether they are they choosing the right flooring for a particular environment. Ask yourself, are you offering the customer their forever floor?

Create a checklist following the classic adage of the ‘5Ws

62 Flooring
Gail Alcock, Product Director, Malmo™
63 Flooring
MA20 Livia - Tile Rigid Comfort from the Malmo™ Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring range

and How’ to determine which product to recommend for installation.

WHO?

Find out who will be using the area where the flooring is being installed. For example, is the customer a wheelchair user where transition strips would be an issue, or are there children or elderly people in the household where additional slip resistance would be beneficial?

Once you understand this you can establish which flooring offers the features and benefits to meet the customer’s needs, but it doesn’t end there.

WHAT?

Is the project a new build, a full refurbishment, or a quick and simple renovation? Stickdown LVT is often an excellent choice for a refurb as the flooring can be laid ahead of heavy items being installed. Rigid click LVT on the other hand may be better for a kitchen or bathroom makeover as it is easier to install and is made for fitting around existing fixtures. Malmo™ Rigid with its patented Välinge 5G click system only requires a light finger touch to securely click the product into place.

Find out the customer’s expectations of the flooring. For example, are they looking to create a seamless transition between rooms? Are scotias around the edge of a room a no-no? A customer may not have considered these things but highlighting them will ensure a more satisfied customer in the long run.

Crucially, check out the moisture level and condition of the subfloor for yourself. A subfloor that is dry, smooth, level, and free from debris is essential for a successful flooring installation. It’s vital to know what you’re dealing with and to undertake necessary preparatory work before getting started.

WHEN?

Find out when the flooring is due to be installed, for example does it need to go in before kitchen furniture. Stickdown LVT is an ideal choice here as cabinetry, kitchen islands and appliances can be placed on top without experiencing expansion or contraction.

WHERE?

The room that the flooring is going into is key to the planning process as different floorcoverings have strengths and weaknesses in different settings.

Bathrooms have specific requirements such as water resistance, while conservatories and rooms with skylights, patios and bi-fold doors need flooring that can cope with temperature hotspots. The stability offered by stickdown LVT means it can deal with areas of high and fluctuating temperatures so is a good option to recommend for installation in these areas.

WHY?

Another question you should ask is why the flooring is being replaced. Has the customer had issues with a previous type of flooring or are they looking to achieve a certain aesthetic?

If they have already decided on a specific product before speaking to an expert, what is it about that product that is so important to them?

HOW?

Finally, find out how long the customer expects the product to last. Are they a serial DIYer who is constantly redecorating or are they investing in their forever home? This will determine things like the wear layer of the flooring which gives it its durable and hardwearing surface. The full Malmo™ Freedom Stickdown and Malmo™ Rigid Senses ranges offer an enhanced 0.55mm wear layer as standard.

Nothing beats a site visit - it’s a great opportunity to get to know the customer and get the answers you need, plus spot potential issues which the customer may not be aware of.

Malmo™ has a range of helpful resources available including installation guides, technical data sheets, FAQs and a lifestyle brochure. We also have experts on hand who can help with product advice and any installation queries.

WHAT MAKES PLYWOOD BATHROOM PANELLING SO TIMELESS?

As the cost of living continues to rise, many homeowners are looking for a cost-effective way to spruce up their bathroom. One such category to have risen to prominence is bathroom panelling, with forgotten materials such as plywood carrying the potential to revitalise a space with ease and without the hefty price tag. Mermaid´s Keely Greenhalgh discusses what makes plywood bathroom panels so timeless.

As one of the most frequently used rooms, many homeowners have become acquainted with the positive impact a comfortable, well-designed bathroom can have on their day.

However, with the cost of living continuing to rise at its fastest rate for 40 years, many larger scale home improvements have taken a back seat. The average bathroom renovation can cost upwards of £5,000 and take between 5 and 10 days to fully install, leaving many homeowners struggling to justify such a significant outlay right now.

This has helped bathroom panelling become an increasingly popular way to spruce up a bathroom interior without the need for a complete room overhaul. While the cost-effective alternative has proven itself as a perfectly viable alternative to traditional tiling, contemporary materials have tended to take the spotlight away from longstanding options such as plywood. But there are many reasons, especially in the current climate, why plywood remains an option well worth considering.

69 Bathroom Panelling
Plywood, while an affordable, easily sourced material, is also very simple to work with. The lack of requirement for specialist tools makes the installation process of plywood simpler and quicker.
Industrial Polar Sparkle

A WINNING COMBINATION OF PROPERTIES

Plywood, while an affordable, easily sourced material, is also very simple to work with. The lack of requirement for specialist tools makes the installation process of plywood simpler and quicker. Like other Mermaid ranges, installation of the Timeless plywood panels can take as little as four hours, which could leave buyers with a saving of hundreds of pounds on their total project costs.

Reduced cost doesn´t have to mean reduced quality, with the layered construction of plywood tending to make it far stronger than traditional timber. Mermaid’s Timeless collection of plywood panels is a great example of how this trait has been combined with its watertight tongue and groove joining system and antibacterial coating to allow installers to feel confident that their installation will stand the test of time.

Choosing to use plywood panelling does not have to compromise aesthetics either, with many plywood ranges offering an assortment of different finishes and designs

to meet any need. Mermaid’s Timeless collection, for example, boasts 30 different designs ranging from Cream Stone to Dark Wood, Graphite Sparkle and even a Welsh Slate, meaning whatever look or trend you’re going for, there’s a panel to suit. The high-pressure laminate (HPL) also comes in an array of textures, from stone, woodgrain and high gloss finishes, all handpicked to suit the design.

In a climate where sustainability is a key consideration for many, plywood panels offer an ethical solution. Mermaid’s Timeless range is sourced from France and Spain and carries Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) proving that the plywood comes from sustainably managed forests, recycled and controlled sources. A large percentage of the complementary HPL is then made at the Wilsonart factories in France and Germany. Bringing the two together ensures that installers can reap the benefits of a panel with an attractive price point as well as a completely transparent origin.

A TIMELESS ALTERNATIVE

With the cost of living creating a challenging home improvements market, installers need to be aware of cost-effective options that they can offer to customers to update their bathroom without compromising aesthetics. Plywood bathroom panelling provides a strong costeffective option without losing any of the added benefits that some of the more contemporary materials bring to a bathroom.

BiKBBI corporate sponsor, Lecico Bathrooms has announced a new partnership with Propelair, who claim to be the designers and manufacturers of the world’s lowest water-flush toilet that works on existing drainage. From the 1st of October 2022 Lecico Bathrooms became the exclusive UK distributor of Propelair products.

The importance of addressing climate change and water scarcity within the UK construction industry have been given prominence recently by consultations with the UK government on water labelling, changes to Part G of the building regulations, and challenges related to recent water shortages. Lecico Bathrooms is looking forward to playing a lead role in addressing these challenges.

Propelair toilets are the highest performers under BREEAM’s water

efficiency guidelines and use on average 84% less water than standard toilets. The proven technology which can be retrofitted to existing drains has been adopted by over 200 customers, and over 4,500 units are now installed across a wide range of commercial buildings.

Engineered specifically for commercial, public, and heavy footfall premises, the Propelair system connects conveniently to existing plumbing systems.

Antony Thompson, Managing Director at Lecico Bathrooms commented, “We are very excited by the opportunities the partnership with Propelair will present over the coming years, and it highlights our commitment to addressing the sustainability challenges faced by our industry. The Lecico Bathrooms team are looking forward to continuing to build on our recent success and we are certain that the addition of the innovative range of

Propelair water-saving toilets into our growing portfolio of bathrooms products will accelerate our growth.”

CEO of Propelair, David Hollander added, “As sustainability continues to become an essential strategy for businesses in the UK, we have partnered with Lecico to meet the growing demand for our hygienic, water-efficient toilet. Propelair has seen growth in our installed base in recent years.

A UK partnership with Lecico, an established bathroom manufacturer, was a logical next step to ensure we provide excellent service to current customers in the UK, while also satisfying increasing demand from new customers. Internationally, Propelair will continue to grow its presence in South Africa and the Gulf, selling directly to customers and working with select distributors.’

PURPLE PEOPLE PLEASER

Brandt Design, added the intensity of colour to one of its Heritage kitchens for a period property in the seaside town of Broadstairs, East Kent.

This deliciously deep purple kitchen truly reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle and love for creativity. Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design says, “We pride ourselves on being original by design and we were instantly inspired by this artistic brief for a hardworking kitchen dining space that has dual access and entry to the garden. In fact, the project in Broadstairs presented us with a unique challenge, as we needed to work within the parameters of the period property that has existing architectural features, an inflexible blueprint and limited natural light.”

Due to the rooms physical limitations we chose a parallel layout to allow the kitchen furniture to work in tandem with a series of freestanding appliances. We felt that built-in

models would evoke a more contemporary look that´s not in keeping with the classic ebb and flow of the kitchen space, and so a 50s retro-style Smeg fridge, Bertazzoni range cooker and AGA cast-iron cooker in stylish British Racing Green are chosen for authenticity.”

Brandt Designs bespoke Heritage Furniture was the natural choice thanks to its in-frame cabinetry, ability to be hand painted and traditional-style toe-kicks that feature a recessed plinth at the base of the cabinets to look like independent pieces of furniture. Saturated in colour, this rich and luxurious deep purple is Pelt by Farrow & Ball, a bold finish that in daylight reveals more blue undertones and in darker lit areas, it can look almost black.

The need for ample storage is critical in any kitchen and in this case, Brandt Design ensured precise space planning of the furniture in terms of layout, proportions, and

sight lines. Julia adds, “Our clients cooking preferences and how regularly they entertain at home was a key part of our design process, as we often take this time to suggest added extras like a dedicated coffee station, walk-in pantry or breakfast cupboard to help streamline daily life. In this case, needing to be sensitive to existing architectural features, we recommended using a portion of redundant space behind the kitchen wall and turn it into a practical l-shaped food store complete with three custom shelves and enough space for a toaster.”

The homeowner balances her busy workload and love of cooking with fresh ingredients and her fondness for traditional French cuisine is echoed throughout the room thanks to her eclectic mix of colours, countrystyle décor and choice of antique hardware.

There is also an al fresco patio area to support the formal dining space in the main kitchen, so there is plenty of seating space for friends and family, even a working lunch if she wants to collaborate with fellow artists on future community projects she might have.

A large still life balances the overmantel and splashback above the AGA, to bring symmetry to the wash zone on the opposite side of the room, featuring a generous Provincial ceramic sink, Victorianstyle Ludlow Bridge taps in Antique Bronze and Swich water filter: all by Abode. A fully-integrated Siemens dishwasher is located to the left of the sink, which lends modern convenience without detracting from the classic furniture and period-style accessories.

Managing Director at Brandt Design, Scott Davis says, “The painted kitchen is a superb vehicle for personal expression, so you need to be sure that you really love the colour and see it how reacts when exposed to natural daylight or under artificial lighting. Selecting a Shaker-style door is an unbeatable way to unite old and new in an older property, especially when finished with brass cup handles and cabinet latches on the base units, and brass knobs on the top units. As interior design specialists we like to consider how we can layer each element in a kitchen including brassware, overmantels, bookshelves and utensil hanging rails to add greater utility, charm and visual depth to custom design schemes.”
