BEATING THE CHILL WITH NEW PPE

We believe in taking care of everyone on our team so in the face of unpredictable and winter weather, the Orange Army was well provided with new cold weather PPE, particularly valid for the team working on the Ore blockade as part of the Sussex railway upgrade plan. Their gear included Storm coats, fleeces, bodywarmers and balaclavas. It is fundamental to look after your frontline staff, as they are your most valuable asset, and we are passionate about this at RSG. Get in touch if you want to use our expertise, come rain or shine!

MOVERS & SHAKERS

It’s not every day that RSG walks the corridors of power, we’re usually too busy taking care of the nation’s rail infrastructure, so Martin Benson, Head of Delivery, and Tony Briffa, Delivery Director, took up the challenge. They are pictured here with Ian McGee, Managing Director at Line Side Construction, before attending an event held by the British & Irish Trading Alliance at the House of Commons in December… what a privilege!

HMP HIGHPOINT AND RAILSTAFF AWARDS. ISO/RISQS AUDIT AND COSS TRAINING TO FOLLOW SHORTLY.

RSG is honoured to have contributed to the pioneering Rail Centre of Excellence at HMP Highpoint. While we’ve delivered many projects and training programmes, this one stands out for its impact. A huge thanks to Aureos for engaging us to deliver the civil works for the Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) installation. This centre is the first of its kind, offering prisoners training in Overhead Line (OHL), Signalling & Telecoms (S&T), and Permanent Way (P way).

The RailStaff Awards 2024, held on 28th November at Birmingham’s NEC, recognised outstanding contributions across the rail industry. A proud moment for RSG was seeing Harry Hills receive recognition from Steve Webb at Keltbray and the Governor of HMP Highpoint for his efforts on this transformative project. Additionally, the HMP Highpoint Rehabilitation Team, in partnership with City & Guilds, won the prestigious ‘Learning, Development & Investing in People Award’ for their incredible work.

Reflecting on the project, Tony Briffa said: “It was great for RSG to provide the resources required to deliver such a great project. We can’t wait to support the next one, give back, and offer opportunities.”

Since launching in August 2022, the programme has helped over 80% of its 107 graduates secure employment post-release, significantly contributing to reducing reoffending rates. This success is a testament to the passion of individuals like Neil Lindley and the support from Aureos, ensuring participants are job ready for the rail industry.

We also extend our appreciation to Aureos for inviting members of the RSG to the RailStaff Awards, celebrating our collective achievements at HMP Highpoint. By providing opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration, City & Guilds Training and HMP Highpoint are transforming lives while helping to bridge industry skill gaps.

RECORD BREAKING CHRISTMAS RESULTS

We had an incredible festive period thanks to the entire team at RSG. We had works planned and collaborated with 14 different clients. Our team completed 926 shifts, 9265 hours were delivered and our attendance KPI was 100%! 26 different roles were covered from PTS Tracekman and minibus drivers right through the safety critical ladder up to ES, MC and CC. Most importantly, all works were delivered accident and incident free and all 150+ staff went home safe to their families.

The office team went over and above, working tirelessly to make sure that the delivery plan was met. This meant late days, hotels booked, resources confirmed, logistics nailed down and teams called out of hours to double check and cross reference every single detail.

The accounts team came in over the break to make sure that wages were processed on time, and the payment plan for all Christmas works was met after the new year. Our track team gave up their precious time over Christmas and were away from their families to deliver key works. Thanks to each and every single team member for pulling out all the stops, so that we could deliver to our clients to the highest possible standards.

PEOPLE NEWS

KHALID ABDULLAHI & SHAKI BANTON #DEVELOPMENT

We would like to congratulate Khalid Abdullahi and Shaki Banton on passing their COSS post mentoring assessments. Tony Briffa, Delivery Director at RSG says, “It was great being present whilst Khalid undertook his COSS assessment at Shenfield. At the time, it was touch and go to get the shift sorted so many thanks for everyone who made it happen. I last crossed paths with Khalid over 10 years ago when we were working on Crossrail West so it’s good to see that people are still managing to get a career on the railways even with the current uncertainty around the industry. Well done also to Martin Benson, Head of Delivery, and the RSG team for the work it takes keeping the team competent and thanks also to Richardson Rail Services Limited for carrying out the assessment.”

Martin continues, “During Shaki’s assessment he took a line blockage of the Up relief to allow the team to carry out essential CMS works. This is the first time he managed this situation on his own. There are many COSS’s working on the railway who have only worked under possession and never taken a line blockage and they would find it daunting, as with anything new. As someone who has taken many over the years, it is like riding a bike to me but doing it under the pressure of an initial assessment needs to be applauded! Shaki was elated to pass his assessment and said it was on par with passing his driving test. It just goes to show that with proper mentorship and clear understanding, anything can be achieved.

Well done to Shaki and to Paul Wade for his outstanding mentorship. We offer mentorship for all safety critical roles as one of our services and if this is a service you require for you or your staff, please get in contact.” Great achievement Khalid and Shaki– well done!

Introducing…Jason Elley, our newly appointed HSQE Manager at RSG. As a new member of our team, we are thrilled to see how determined Jason has been to get out and about on to key client sites and hit the ground running since he joined us in December 2024.

Jason’s expertise in HSE, Civils and rail infrastructure means he fully understands our commitment to safety and integrity in every single projects. Jason has a rich background in railway engineering and a strategic approach to resource planning, and is well-known for his dedication to operational excellence and employee wellbeing. He is already making a big difference inspiring our people and celebrating their success on the ground.

With over 20 years rail industry experience, Jason has consistently led by example in site management, logistics and construction roles supporting the infrastructure across the country, including delivering major track renewal projects and working on London Underground.

Jason says, “I am really pleased that I can bring my skills to RSG and contribute to such a progressive force in the industry which is so focused on safety – something that is absolutely mission critical for me in my new role. With crucial OLE works taking

I am very proud to be part of RSG as it continues to thrive and grow and look forward to helping everyone in the team go to the next level in terms of HSQE.”

COMMUNITY

RSG DONATE TO MURPHY TO SUPPORT CASTLEHAVEN FOOD BANK

RSG is a generous community and always digs deep for a good cause. Tony Briffa, Delivery Director and Martin Benson, Head of Delivery, had the privilege of delivering RSG’s annual donation to a valued client, Murphy, in support of the amazing work at Castlehaven Community Association before Christmas.

The Castlehaven Food bank was established in 2020, in response to growing need in the community in Camden Town. A dedicated team of volunteers pack emergency food parcels and toiletries for individuals and families, providing over 200 people experiencing food poverty with healthy and nutritious food parcels every week. The parcels consist of items such as rice, pasta, noodles, cereals, beans, soup, cooking sauces and fresh fruit and vegetables.

For Martin, the visit was particularly personal as he grew up a stone’s throw from the Murphy’s yard. Tony says, “It’s always a pleasure visiting the Murphy team. When we arrived, it was all handson deck to get one of the final vans loaded and off to be distributed. Kentish Town and Camden, like most London areas, are a melting pot of extremely wealthy and the struggling. Over the last five years the gap between them has stretched and even the obligatory two working adults with no children are starting to feel the struggle, this is something we should all be looking to eradicate all year round.”

PETERBOROUGH

PETERBOROUGHNOV 2024

As the gateway to the East Midlands and East Anglia, Peterborough Station was a hive of activity for RSG in November! The trial pitting team was hard at work at the weekend for AECOM, a valued client. The Sheffield team really put the graft in with the excavations and as minimal equipment is required for trial pits this helps to save on fuel and transport costs.

Adam Adams did a superb job on site as COSS and the whole team can be very proud of a job well done.

HERTFORDSHIRE

HERTFORDSHIRE - NOV 2024

Nothing stops the Orange Army from delivering on time, on budget and on top form. Paul Wade, Head of Rail, visited Ian Innes, COSS site supervisor, to check in on an extensive deveg project on the Midland Mainline in Hertfordshire. RSG provided a valued client with safety critical, supervisory staff to get the job done safely and securely.

Paul visited the site and was delighted to report that Ian was doing a cracking job! They even got to enjoy breakfast together and have a good discussion regarding the December rule changes, in particular the 3m rule when walking to site (no site wardens). Paul says, “Everything was well acknowledged and up to speed. I also issued Ian with a new disto laser in order to help keep the distances accurate and the team safe. Well done Ian, keep up the great work!”

This was a big project in wintery weather and we are pleased to report that even when temperatures hit a rather brisk -3, Ian continued to do a sterling job keeping everyone safe and keeping all planned works on programme.

PROJECT UPDATE

SAFETY BULLETIN

ELECTRICAL CABLES & OVERHEAD POWER LINES

Hidden & Underground Cables

1. Before carrying out any work that involves penetrations or working on or around electrical cables, gather existing service drawings for the working area and, ideally, the entire site. Check to see where there are existing services so that you can avoid them during your work.

2. Isolate the necessary cables before work begins and instigate a permit-to-work system. Make sure there are controls for switching the electricity back on.

3. Before digging or breaking into walls, floors, or ceilings, etc. use a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT scan) or other suitable piece of cable- locating equipment. Check first that it has been calibrated and in is in good working order. Do not use without appropriate training.

4. If you come across any cables, you should assume that all cables are live unless it has been confirmed to you by trained and competent isolation staff that they are dead.

5. If cables are exposed, they should be supported and protected from any potential further damage. 6. If a cable is struck and/or accidentally damaged all persons should clear the area until the damage has been assessed by the appropriate utility company.

7. Be cautious when using power tools to break up concrete surfaces, as cables may lie directly underneath the surface.

8. Any isolations required including where cables have been damaged should only be carried out if safe to do so with all persons clear. Inspection and isolation of cables should only be carried out by those who are trained and competent.

SAFETY BULLETIN

OVERHEAD POWERLINES

1. All overhead lines to be treated as live. You should never assume they are only telephone wires.

2. Ensure you are aware of the minimum clearance distances provided by the utility company.

3. Do not bypass “goalposts”, barriers, or other warnings.

4. Check the route is clear of overhead power lines prior to moving a mobile scaffold tower, ladder, or other access equipment.

5. When signaling, always keep overhead lines in view and guide plant underneath overhead lines where “goalposts” have been erected.

6. Ensure any special precautions laid down by the utility company are observed prior to working under or near overhead lines.

7. If erecting scaffolding or other similar access equipment adjacent to overhead lines, all poles and other equipment should be handled a safe distance away.

8. Do not stack materials or operate tippers under the overhead lines, it will reduce the safe clearance distances and can result in arcing.
