Modern by design, this handleless kitchen concept is just one example of how tailored space planning and a sensitive approach to tone and texture will create a space that is fashionably practical. From there you enter the world of classic kitchen interiors with a shaker-style painted kitchen in classic blue – a timeless colour for the classic kitchen, which is regarded as the Colour of the Year 2020 by Pantone.

For those of you who prefer to work from the ground up, head downstairs and check out a traditional basement-style layout in black and white with walls of hidden storage and integrated appliances. Upstairs, you can enjoy the benefits of natural

stone in combination with wood, where a central island is transformed into a luxury space for cooking and dining. To ensure we can provide the highest level of service, our Hampstead showroom also has a dedicated client area on the first floor complete with working kitchen and coffee bar. Offering a private space to consult, design and plan your next project, you can discuss your ideas freely whilst drawing first-hand design inspiration from our customers via an on-screen presentation of past projects by Brandt Design. So, are you a UK homeowner or specialist interior designer or architect? Do you need our design help with a single project or larger development? At Brandt Design, we have created a lifestyle environment where our customers (and yours) can make use of our Hampstead showroom, expert design team and creative resources available. Island Units Personalising the kitchen is a great way to make your kitchen space individual and as family-friendly as possible. This issue, we discuss the benefits of island living and explain how you can create a more sociable way of living, cooking and dining in your kitchen with a versatile island unit ...

LIFESTYLE

“The foundation of a well-designed island comes via form & function. The aesthetics and choice of materials must have synergy with its surroundings.”

Family first layouts

Material Mix-up

Hide-and-seek Storage

Multi-generational living has ousted the one-size-fits-all kitchen to welcome future-proof design, which is able to cater to a growing population that is living longer, marrying later and demanding more in terms of valuable interior design.

There has never been a better time to focus on the chromatic, tactile and decorative identity of the products in your kitchen and how they will impact your environment: aesthetically and economically. Whether you opt for a mix of raw and imitation finishes, or commit to one complete scheme, innovation in surfaces is giving us all a new level of freedom in terms of design and material selection. 2020 sees a rich palette of natural and liquid stone, high-texture leather and marble accent details, balanced by tactile wood finishes and the extremely versatile palette of grey.

Discreet storage solutions like multipurpose island units with custom seating, built-in appliances and reactive banks of furniture made up of pullout larders, integrated wine stores and departmental drawer solutions are your current markers for a functional kitchen space.

Looking to enhance family life is therefore critical to the design process with custom-made kitchen furniture being used to accommodate different types of user, application and siting. Forget the extension, as a flextension will create the ultimate in flexible living for you and your family from just the kitchen alone. Features like integrated seating areas, low-level and full height storage solutions, to extended breakfast bars or island units that become an all-inclusive workstation complete with food prep areas and space for cooking, dining and home office work will be vital. It’s an exciting time to be renovating a home as there is a clear appetite for eclectic designs which enhances the flow of the kitchen and unifies it to the rest of your home.

The ‘painted kitchen’ has also become a practical choice this year, now offering a modern take on a more traditional look and finish. Great for emphasising both furniture and architectural detail, grey will continue to be the neutral of the moment with taupe and light greys through to charcoal and slate grey. Offering a new lease of life to the kitchen cabinet, painted furniture when paired with authentic raw materials like marble and concrete will create a durable kitchen environment that is classic in nature, yet contemporary in finish.

An ability to establish zonal utility in an open plan kitchen space, innovations in concealment is set to grow this year and we expect to see a continued flow of organisational fixtures and fittings designed to maximise storage, improve user convenience and ensure best-in performance. Interior storage solutions are therefore as important as appearance this year, with bespoke storage elements optimising both kitchen & lifestyle.

CASE STUDY Brandt Design, recently complete an ultra-practical, grey-scale kitchen diner for an exclusive property in Mill Hill, London. Light, bright and airy, are just a few reasons why this beautiful kitchen is your answer to spring 2020 – especially as we all need to create more space for cooking, dining, down-time and more recently, working from home due to the global crisis coronavirus. With that in mind, it makes sense to look at combination designs like this recently completed, ultra-practical grey-scale kitchen diner. This designer kitchen scheme furnished in Classic Atlanta Terra Oak, was designed with flexible family-living and high functionality in mind, whilst taking great care to achieve the perfect balance of form and function. The brief from the owner was to create a beautiful and practical kitchen with modern feel, which maximised storage space and catered to dinner parties and everyday family life. Centred around an l-shaped cook zone with off-white Carrara quartz worktops, matching dining table and a light grey leather banquette, this open plan kitchen creates ample seating and dining options for both family and friends. With the view to emphasise the vivid accents of white, we specified a dark oak wood veneer to provide contrast and a dynamic backdrop for the mirrored rose gold splashback. Designed to carry the same eyeline as the glassy splashback, a pair of Gaggenau 200 appliances help define the cabinets and drawers to create discreet, well-utilised storage that works in harmony. The state-of-the-art Siemens induction hob and overhead ceiling extractor completes the island unit, taking

centrestage for convenient cooking and easy-access to the nearby sink and tap area, both available by leading kitchen brand, Blanco. To enhance its purpose in the kitchen, the island unit features six generous deep drawers which provide space to hideaway essentials. Extending the island unit is a highlypractical banquette seat, which ensures a comfortably contained area for informal dining, home/office work or light entertaining. Defining the space through colour and shape, this modernstyle ribbed leather banquette is the perfect introduction to the 8-seat dining area with yearlong views of the garden. Accentuating the metallic shades of the rose gold splashback and charcoal grey cabinetry, extra tonal balance is achieved through the finishing touches like the rose gold soap dispenser, matching toaster, retro clockface and silver handle profiles, which echo the fitted appliances and industrial-style chair legs. Scott Davis, Director, Brandt Design, says “The kitchen is the hardest working room in the home, needing to cater for cooking, leisure and entertaining all-in-one. So we fulfil our clients brief by bringing an element of fun and high-design to the kitchen space. The banquette was a great marker to work the rest of the design around, allowing us to create dedicated areas by zoning the room and ensuring an efficient use of space. The beauty of this kitchen lies in its simplicity, whilst practically providing interior storage solutions, clutter-free work surfaces, floor-to-ceiling fitted furniture and ample seating and dining space.”

Q&A

QUESTIONS & ADVICE In each issue of Brandt Life we want to bring you up to date with the latest product information plus tips and advice which we hope will be informative and complement your lifestyle.

I am considering changing my built-in oven and thought I knew what I wanted but a work colleague has confused me by telling me there are two differing types - catalytic and pyrolytic. I am now confused, in layman’s terms can you tell me the difference please? Anna Cohen, Middlesex The difference is mainly in the cleaning process - and the price! Catalytic ovens are the cheapest and most common and have removable liners to enable easy cleaning by hand in the sink. In comparison, Pyrolytic ovens are simpler to use and more efficient. To clean after use you simply heat the oven to around 500 degrees for 30 minutes and all the fat turns to ash and it can just be wiped away with a damp cloth, so no cumbersome removal of liners There is another category of oven by the way - Steam ovens but we will be looking at these in a later issue.

I love the latest gadgets and would love to know the best tech for my kitchen? Linda Wright, North London An instant hot water tap is really helpful when cooking at home, becoming invaluable in the modern kitchen for quickly preparing hot drinks and washing fruit and vegetables. Plus some of the latest designs on the market now offer cold, boiling, filtered and sparkling water options from one tap, so you can cut down on valuable drinks storage

and ensure a chilled glass of water or the perfect cup of tea or coffee, every time. In fact, coffee lovers are spoilt for choice thanks to the range of integrated coffee machines now available for fitted kitchens, so barista-style coffee bars and work stations can now be designed with the latest technology and ensure your kitchen stays up-to-date!

RECIPE Bring the aromatic and distinct flavours from your local takeaway into your home with this easy, authentic Sri Lankan lamb curry recipe. Adjust the amount of chilli to suit your level of spice, and if you can’t find roasted curry powder, simply toast some curry powder in a dry frying pan for a few minutes to release the aromas from the spices. This curry is best when made the day before to let the flavours develop, and it freezes very well so you can cook up a batch. Serve with rice and homemade tomato and onion salsa for a flavoursome family meal.

Ingredients | Serves 6-8 2kg diced lamb shoulder For the marinade 400ml coconut milk 2tbsp roasted curry powder 1tsp chilli powder 6 cardamom pods, crushed 3 garlic cloves, grated 1 cinnamon stick For the curry 2tbsp vegetable oil 2 onions, roughly chopped 3tbsp roasted curry powder 2tbsp black mustard seeds Method 1. Place all the marinade ingredients into a large bowl with the lamb, mix well and leave overnight in the fridge. 2. To make the curry, heat the oil in a large casserole dish over a medium high heat and fry the onions until they start to colour, add the spices, cook for a minute, then add the tomatoes and cook for a further minute. 3. Add the lamb with the marinade and some seasoning to the casserole dish and stir well. 4. Preheat a Miele Oven on Conventional Heat 150ËšC, place the casserole dish onto the wire rack and cook uncovered for 3 hours. 5. Check the seasoning and serve.

•••

Dear Scott, I’m writing to you following the successful installation of our kitchen by your company because I thought you might like to know that having had time to assess thing, it is clear we undoubtedly ended up with a better kitchen at a better price than John Lewis, who I would suspect are a significant competitor.

would have definitely put my wife and I off. From the outset, it was clear Mayhul knew his stuff. He would pick up on our comments and observations and incorporate them into the several revisions. His input was borne from knowledge and experience and we certainly built up a good rapport.

When deciding on our new kitchen, we had received the quote from John Lewis, but we had long admired your kitchen installation at a good friend’s home. He strongly recommended Brandt and we made contact. If I’m truthful, knowing our friend, we did expect the price to be way beyond our budget, but thought perhaps we might get some tips and ideas.

It would be foolish to think that a project of this scale would not have any issues and of course there were a few, but what really counted, was the speed and way in which these were resolved. Rightly or wrongly, I anticipated having to chase things up and getting into negotiation over resolution. Quite simply, I cannot be positive enough about how brilliant and effective the customer service was. Communication was great throughout and I really can’t find fault.

From our initial meeting, we were really impressed with your designer Mayhul. There was no hard or even soft sell, this

I appreciate this was very much a team effort and Marsida as Project Manager was really efficient. On the few occasions I rang the Stevenage office, as soon as I introduced myself, the staff seemed to know immediately who I was and were aware of the general details of the job. Simon in the office is also worthy of mention and was always on top of snagging issues. Even the various staff members (sorry but names escape me) who delivered the kitchen and fitted the worktops, etc. were inevitably punctual, friendly and courteous. Last but not least, the fitters Tom & Andy, are great ambassadors for Brandt. They are very skilled craftsmen and I never got the feeling it was a ‘job and off’ mentality. They took time to assemble and fit the kitchen carefully and put quality of workmanship at the top of their priorities. Friends who see the kitchen for

the first time inevitably all say “Wow” which is a lovely feeling. Please pass on my thanks to all those involved. I understand you rarely advertise, preferring to rely on word of mouth. My wife and I have already recommended to you friends and will of course continue to do so. Finally, I understand that the current situation is likely to be having a direct adverse impact on your business and the people you employ directly or indirectly. My thoughts are with you, but I am confident that your reputation will see you through these dreadful times. Best wishes, Kevin McKeown Hertford
