S E N I O R

M A N A G E M E N T T E A M

After school I worked in a bank and studied accountancy in the early 2000s. Outside of work and studies, I wanted to do something more fulfilling with my time in addition to playing rugby, whilst giving back to my local community, which is when I started volunteering at a local children's charity with disabled people. This changed my outlook on life and my career in many ways.

After my initial experiences supporting others in the community, I qualified as a social worker, and have since managed a range of services for disabled people including fostering agencies, residential and nursing homes, supported living services, community short breaks, crisis intervention programs for families at risk of breakdown, and preschool services for children waiting for a diagnosis.

Glyn Meredith

Being able to support others to promote their independence was a real privilege. Having observed the challenges disabled people and their families experience first-hand, It inspired me to want to change things for the better, and support disabled people to have more choice and control of their lives, and be active citizens in their communities.

In my previous role, I developed and led a community strategy on increasing community programs to enhance our reach and impact across Wales for disabled people. This pan disability strategy included programs that support employment opportunities, on the job work placements, skills and training for individual development along with volunteering. I also have experience of developing ambitious fundraising, events, marketing and communication strategy to get the best for the charity.

Chief Executive Officer

GLYN MEREDITH GLYN MEREDITH @CARTREFI.COOP

I am passionate that disabled people need to be a catalyst for societal change and must be given the opportunity and support to influence the agenda for local and national legislation. I am very excited about the opportunities Cartrefi Cymru Co-operative has to enhance the lives of the people we support and look forward to embarking on this journey, through a cooperative model.

On a personal note I love to spend time with my two boys and am keen on sports and staying fit and like to enter running, cycling and tri athlon events now that I am too old to play rugby! I think I have a great sense of humour although you may not agree! I am keen to listen to everyone and talk about Cartrefi’s next steps and how we meet challenges together.

In my spare time I enjoy knitting and crochet, gardening, reading (especially crime novels), walking and cooking.

Jill Nicholson JILL NICHOLSON JILL.NICHOLSON@CARTREFI.COOP

I have worked for Cartrefi since 1998 when I was appointed as a Performance Manager for Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale. I then became a Regional Director following our restructure in 2000. My previous work experience is in homelessness and housing advice which I did for 16 years in London and Cardiff.

The best part of my job is meeting all sorts of people - many of the people we support and their families, our employees and community supporters. I believe that the work that we do really makes a difference to peoples' lives and it's inspiring for me to see the good work that our teams are doing.

Director - Operations & People

I have been active in the voluntary sector from a young age; lots of my spare time is spent supporting local charities such as the St John Ambulance Brigade and the Welsh Ambulance service.

Director - Operations & ICT

Geraint Jenkins

My education has mainly been vocational based following my school years, including several Leadership and Management Diplomas. More recently I have had the opportunity to study ‘Vanguard People Centred Services’ with Buckingham and Kingston universities.

My other passions are spending time with my young family, listening to music and attempting to get fit!

GERAINT JENKINS GERAINT.JENKINS@CARTREFI.COOP

Now a Director for Operations and ICT, I joined Cartrefi Cymru in 2011 originally as an Area Manager. My career started in a local nursing home working as a Care Assistant when I left school. Whilst there, I began studies to become a nurse, but quickly realised the Health Service was not for me, so I took a leap of faith and joined the third sector. Supporting adults with learning difficulties became very important to me and I have been fortunate to have been able to work in a variety of settings across Wales and England.

Susan Coffey

I joined Cartrefi Cymru as Finance Director in July 2019, supporting the Board and the Senior Management Team by developing a new finance strategy and wider organisation transformation.

SUSAN COFFEY SUSAN.COFFEY@CARTREFI.COOP

the challenge of finance facilitating change and improvement whilst ensuring decisions are always focused on the charity's objectives.

Director - Finance

I am a Fellow Cartered Management Accountant and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

I've worked in the private, public and third sector and ran my own accountancy practice for four years. I really enjoy the special role that finance has in charities;

I qualified as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in 2003 and became a Chartered Member shortly after. I joined Cartrefi Cymru in 2013 following a lengthy career in the public sector, spanning more than 25 years.

I was the Regional HR Manager for the Wales Probation Trust during it’s complicated national restructure and also worked with the education team for Newport City Council for a short period.

CATHRYN FERRIS CATHRYN.FERRIS@CARTREFI.COOP

I have always worked in human resources and have a strong sense of fairness and equity which I strive to ensure underpins the work we do. No two days are ever the same working here and it is that and the knowledge that we are supporting people to achieve what matters to them, regardless of how small, that makes me get up in the morning.

Working in the voluntary sector is very different from my previous experience but I have to say it was highly refreshing to join this great organisation and start working with others to make a real difference to the lives of people in our communities.

On a personal note, I am also a Trustee for a local disabled cycling charity and like to keep fit and healthy by running and cycling when I get the chance. I also love to travel and am currently ticking off the many places on my lengthy bucket list.

Assistant Director - People

Cathryn Ferris

I have worked for Cartrefi for the past 28 years, starting on the Peri team in Bridgend. I am so grateful I had this opportunity as it gave me a chance to meet lots of staff and service users who allowed me to develop skills in a variety of settings. From there, I moved into a supported living service also in the Bridgend area. I worked there for 3 years where I then became an Assistant Service Manager. I was lucky to have a Manager who encouraged development and she prompted me to go for acting positions which were outside of the Bridgend area. I then became a Service Manager and from there had another temporary position as Area Manager in RCT.

I stayed in RCT for the next 17 years meeting so many people. During the last 8 years I have also worked in the Vale of Glamorgan area as well, meeting lots more wonderful service users and staff.

I hope my short story inspires others to pursue a career with Cartrefi. I started on the Peri Team and this year have started a new chapter as Assistant Director (Operations).

SUE JONES SUE.JONES@CARTREFI.COOP

Assistant Director - Operations

There have been many changes during the time I have worked in Cartrefi but I can honestly say I have never had to go through some of the situations we have had to face this past year. Everyone has shown how dedicated they are to the people we support by adjusting their support practices and putting themselves in the front line to ensure support continued with as little disruption as possible - a huge thank you to everyone.

Sue Jones

Nicola Phillips

Since then, I have developed my knowledge and understanding having had multiple roles within the company; all of which have allowed me to progress to Assistant Director. I have always tried to do what's best for people and to do what matters to them which I will continue to do as an Assistant Director.

NICOLA PHILLIPS NICOLA.PHILLIPS@CARTREFI.COOP

Assistant Director - Operations

In 2004 I decided I needed a change in career, and had aspirations to give something back to the community - which is when I applied to be a Support Worker at Cartrefi Cymru.

I acknowledge the advantages of working for a Co-operative, and I will use my skills and experience to improve communities across Wales.

Outside of work I am a member of Brecon Lions, helping local causes and supporting international charities, working towards making the world a better place. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and spoiling my grandson.

The best way to work with me – Be open and honest, I will always find the time to listen to you, my door is always open. When I’m not working, I am cooking, walking the mountains, attending music events and keeping fit. I enjoy travelling and assisting others to reach their goals.

Prior to Cartrefi, my career took many paths.

KARLOS WILSHAW KARLOS.WILSHAW@CARTREFI.COOP

Dissatisfied with roles within an exhausted retail sector and inspired by my grandparents (who were pivotal in shaping my disposition), my transition into care began as a Support Worker in 2008. I learned from the people I supported and my colleagues to admire difference, respect change and appreciate that times can be challenging. Collaboration with all stakeholders ensured our shared visions built-on achievable outcome focused pathways for all. Supporting people with Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, I have worked across residential, supported living, clinical (NHS) and secure settings across North Wales and the North West of England.

Our sector is ever evolving, with continuous learning on a daily basis. We are all human, and sometimes we don’t get it right, but having the support of others offers guidance and reassurance. Some advice - Be yourself, add some humour. We are a team, let’s get creative and make a difference!

Assistant Director - Operations

My Cartrefi story began in early 2020. I was captivated by the organisations journey and commitment to quality and values, which are easily summarised in three words; “Respect, Safeguard and Enable” –standards which compliment my own beliefs and ideals. Appointed initially as an Area Manager, Cartrefi has enabled me to broaden my horizons, and advance into the role of Assistant Director.

Honing your ability to self-reflect is a key skill to master. It helps you reflect on your experiences, your skills, and your motivations.

Do you think your past situations influenced this experience? Who else was involved? How may they have felt? How did they react and why?
