Yeah, its leapyear, or is it leaseyear? Its February again, and 2020 is a leap year, an extra day in the year to spend with our loved ones, an extra day to achieve a goal we may have set for ourselves and extra day to live like every day is our last, and even more interesting, it gives the women a chance to propose to their man, whether he wants it or not. The relationship may easily go from” leasing” to” owning”. This is opposite to the car market. If I look into my crystal ball, I see a lot of changes coming to Spain especially when it comes to owning a car. In Norway my home country and North Europe we saw this trend begin 10 years ago. Private leasing became very popular, people don´t buy cars anymore, they lease or long-term or rent. At the end of the day it is the same really as buying a car, because for most of us its actually the bank that owns the car, we loan money from the bank to buy the car, and we pay the bank every month for this loan, just like leasing!. Leasing is kind of the same, but with few differences. You pay an entrance fee, get a brand-new car, then pay a certain amount of money every month on average for 36 months, then you have to give back the car, and start again.

the car industry here is too greedy, and the entrance fee must drop at least 50% in my opinion, the monthly fees should stay the same as they advertise. This is what I believe is the success-factor in Norway and the north of Europe. The car-industry booms, they have gone from selling fewer and fewer cars, to offering leasing contract for everyone, which has resulted in a very appreciated increase in the turnover of new cars. We benefit from it, the car industry benefit from it, and as usual, the finance companies win big time. Hello car-industry! I am looking for the best private leasing deal for me. You will be able to always drive a new safe car, most expenses, except insurance and petrol, are covered by the leasing deal. But you lose the entrance fee, when you give back the car. If you calculate it very accurate, it is probably not too much loss compared to buying a new car. A new car depreciates or loses value almost immediately after you drive it off a dealer’s lot. As a quick rule of thumb, a car will lose between 15% and 20% of its value each year. A car in its second year will be worth 80% to 85% of its first-years value and a car in its third year will be worth 80% to 85% of its second-year value. The open-top 911 continues in a decades-long tradition, established when Porsche unveiled the prototype of the first 911 Cabriolet at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1981. Customers and fans alike were instantly captivated. The first open-top 911 variant rolled off the production line in 1982, and it has been a constant feature in the model range ever since. The opentop version of the iconic sports car will be launched in 2019 to almost unprecedented fanfare. It includes all the innovative features of the Coupe, along with Cabriolet-specific advanced features such as new hydraulics which get the roof opened and closed more quickly than ever. The new model echoes the modern lines of the Coupe, though it remains unmistakably a Porsche 911 in Cabriolet form. The fully-automatic soft top has an integrated 6

glass rear window, while the soft top structure contains magnesium surface elements known as bows, which reliably prevent ballooning of the roof at high speeds. The soft top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50 km/h. The 911 Cabriolet is initially available as a Carrera S with rear-wheel drive and Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive. As a result of this, on 7 January 2020 the PSOE were able to take control of the Government in coalition with “Unidas Podemos”, the hard-left wing political party.

Por fin!! After a few years of parliamentary infighting and 4 different general elections over the last four years, the different political parties have been able to form a new Government. Having seen the Presidents of the last two years, we are in no way sure if this will last for the stipulated 4 years…. Spain has not had a stable majority Government since the November 2015 elections, whereby an agreement between the political parties was brokered during 2016 that allowed the Partido Popular (PP, a centre right party) to form a Government. However, a political scandal resulted in the PP suffering a “No Confidence Motion” in June 2018, and the PSOE (a centre left party) took control with an even smaller share of parliamentary votes. Since 2018 the situation has been so unstable that the PSOE were unable to 10

Despite all the political problems and the Spain’s inability to approve any Annual Budget since 2017 (the last Budget approved was for the year 2018 and remains current). Spain’s economic growth rate since 2016 has doubled the Eurozone average, and unemployment rate has reduced from 21% (December 2015) to approximately 14% (end of 2019). SO, WHAT’S NEXT? The new Spanish Government is facing a real challenge for 2020. The creation of employment in Spain during 2019 has been noticeably slow and in general terms, the growth of the economy of most European countries has not been significant compared to the previous years. All these deceleration signals do not necessarily mean that the world is facing another economic recession, but these factors will have to be seriously taken into consideration when preparing the 2020 Annual Budget. One of the main changes that was announced during the election campaign, was to increase the personal taxation on high net worth individuals and to modify the employment legislation to a slightly more protective way in favour

of employees. These several changes, as they sound, do not seem very attractive for investors and business traders as historically, the increase in taxes and employment costs do not facilitate the creation of businesses and subsequently, new employment. To make the Spanish economy more attractive and dynamic, the implemented changes in Spanish legislation must be carefully analysed and agreed upon within all sectors. The increase of taxes may be inevitable, but this must be accompanied with a well-designed and structured road map that facilitates and stimulates the productivity in businesses that will have a positive impact on the creation of new and more valuable employment. The Spanish economy is sustained by the construction and tourist sectors, which represent almost 30% of the budget and employment in Spain and sadly, these are the sectors that are most sensitive and suffer more from national or worldwide economic recessions. All in all, Spain has to learn from its past mistakes and ‘reinvent the wheel` by trying to gradually upgrade their labour laws, make employment more attractive for the business owner and also bring into practice some serious incentives for small to medium sized businesses ensuring they can continue in a sustainable and profitable manner. Spain is a great place to live, we now hope the Government will make it a great place to run a business too.

Can we reverse Type 2 diabetes? There has been an increase in type 2 diabetes in recent years which is mainly due to an increase in obesity and poor dietary choices. Sugar levels are controlled by a hormone called insulin, this hormone is secreted by the pancreas, a gland situated next to the stomach. In type 2 diabetes the secretion of insulin is normal, but its action is altered by the fat cells accumulated by the organism. The number of extra calories that we eat are usually stored as fat mainly around the abdominal area. DEBILITATING ILLNESS Type 2 diabetes is a debilitating illness and its poor control will lead to long term vascular problems including cardiac problems, erectile dysfunction and nerve damage known as neuropathies, leading to chronic pain and motor problems. Heart attacks as well as strokes are also adding to the list of debilitating problems and increases the mortality rate associated with type 2 diabetes. Many researchers looked at the possibility of reversing this process. It has

been observed that patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery and feeding exclusively on a liquid diet will have a drop in their blood sugar to nearly normal levels. This effect continued even after they resumed a normal diet. This has led to the conclusion that this liquid diet can restart the metabolism and normalize the blood sugar levels. It has been well known that diet, intermittent fasting and exercise will reduce the amount of fat stored around the abdomen and as a result the insulin will be more effective in its action. This new revolutionary discovery has added to the possibility of reversing type 2 diabetes. LIQUID DIET The studies also showed that patients fed exclusively on a liquid diet for 7 days will have less amount of fat around the pancreas and liver, a fact proven by the MRI scans performed before and after the diet. As a result of losing the fat around these essential metabolic organs, their function will be more effective. In conclusion, a combination of a personalised liquid diet used initially together with a specifically designed diet after-

BuyingREALorESTATE selling property in Spain – the most confusing question: REAL ESTATE What is the First Occupation License? If you are purchasing an off-plan or new build property, you will need to ensure that you have a License of First Occupation (Licencia de Primera Ocupación) in place before you sign any contract. The license is also sometimes referred to as a Cédula de Habitabilidad and is an administrative license obtained from the town hall. The granting of the license shows that the property complies with all legal requirements and may now be occupied for residential use. It’s important to understand that the License of First Occupation is issued for all newly built properties. This law came into effect in 1979 and since that time, all new properties are legally required to have one. If the property was built before 1979, it is exempt from this requirement. WHERE CAN I GET MY LICENSE OF FIRST OCCUPATION? If you previously purchased a property and do not have a habitation certificate, you can check with your local town hall to see if they have a copy, which they should have if there is one. If there isn’t one, you will need to pay for this and may also need a technical report from a professional architect to confirm that the property is habitable. You could also apply for the certificate “Informe que no hay infracciones urbanistica” from the local town hall. This is basically a document that states that the property is legal and complies with all local real estate regulations. 34

BUYING A NEW BUILD OR OFF PLAN PROPERTY WITHOUT THE LICENSE? We don´t recommend, because without a License of First Occupation you will:

• You cannot legally do a short-term rental without the license because you need this document to obtain a “Tourist License”.

• Not be able to contract utilities such as water, electricity, gas and telecommunications.

We don´t recommend to buy any property without the First Occupation License, because if you need to sell it, you will be in a weaker position as a vendor and leave yourself open to much reduced bids on your property. If you are a buyer, it is simply the risk that you will have to pay a fine when the urbanization is eventually legalized and the risk is that nobody can tell you at the moment how much that would be.

• You will not be legally permitted to live in the property or rent it out. • You will not be able to get a mortgage loan on the property. • You will have problems trying to sell the property in the future. WHAT ABOUT BUYING A RESALE PROPERTY WITHOUT THE LICENSE OF FIRST OCCUPATION? Although it is legal to complete a Spanish property purchase without a License of First Occupation, your lawyer would probably advise against it as it has numerous legal and practical drawbacks, such as:

Long term Marbella resident Carlo Mason, owner of Blue Sky Super Car Hire, tells us a little about his life, his work, and what makes him tick… Carlo, I´ll begin by asking you, first and foremost, who is Carlo Mason? “Well, I´m a retired sportsman who knows most people on the coast. I´ve been here over 40 years, since I was fourteen.” Where did you grow up? “I was born in Italy. My Mum is Italian and my Dad is from Manchester; I grew up in Liverpool. I left Italy when I was about four or five. I have loads of family there, from Florence, from Arezzo. You know the movie ‘La Vida Es Bella’? That was filmed there, that´s my home town. I visit Italy all the time, so in my heart I´m Italian but I´ve got an English brain and a bit of the laid back Andalucian thrown in.” he laughs. Why did you come to Marbella in the first place? “For the golf courses. At fourteen I realized that my studies weren´t great and my Dad said ‘Or you become a golf pro or you work for me’, because I was very good at golf. So, I came here to evaluate my potential. I hooked up with Miguel Jimenez, and it was just Miguel and I playing every day.”

So, you stopped your studies entirely? That’s was a big gamble. “Yes, it was, but I did speak six languages so there was something to fall back on. But it was a good gamble because I turned Pro when I was eighteen, and played on tour in Europe for twelve years. I turned Pro quickly, younger than normal ‘cos I had a lot of pressure from my Dad to start earning. Miguel Jimenez turned Pro two years after I did.” “Then I opened Miraflores Golf School and La Quinta Golf School. I also had a Golf School in Stockholm, Sweden, and tennis star Bjorn Borg asked me to open the Bjorn Borg Sports School. So, retiring from playing, I wasn´t teaching, but I was opening schools because I had technique and ideas. Then after I while I started to get bored, and a good friend of mine suggested I work in real estate with him, but I told him ‘I can’t sell, I´m not a salesman,’ and he said ‘Give it a go.’” So, Carlo did give it a go… and he was with them for ten years! He then started his own real estate company, Blue Sky Homes International, dedicated to finding luxury homes for international clients. So, Blue Sky Super Car Hire…. Was it a natural progression from the real estate? “Yes, well what happened was I had a friend who wanted to borrow my Ferrari, and so I lent it to him, taking a deposit for any damage he might do, and my secretary said ‘There is a business there, I bet there are plenty people who want to rent a really nice car.’ So, I asked around and I thought, ‘I´m going to do this.’ I bought a couple more Ferraris and it´s just been a success story.” So, how many cars do you have at present? “I have the keys to 30 plus luxury cars. Our clients are from everywhere, mainly Arab in the Summer and also many 44

Scandinavians, but a bit of everything really. Last year we celebrated fifteen years in business. We do weddings. We do ‘Arrive in style’, so if you are going out for dinner you may ring us up and ask to be collected in, say, a Bentley four door. We also do Experience Days, which are a lot of fun. We take groups of ten to twelve people and we drive around the beautiful country roads, visiting the vineyards. We take various super cars; we can take up to forty people, and we drive and stop at six points so everyone can change cars. It´s about €600/person. It´s absolutely great fun, it´s the best day ever! We do that in the Winter.” “We are the best because we have been here for so long, we´ve got the best fleet and the cars are all new. It´s the personal touch; a lot of our competitors add after costs for the client, so, on-line we are not the cheapest, but when you come to pay, we are, there are no extras added on. And when you return the car I guarantee your security deposit is returned. We want you to recommend another client to us.” Any strange experiences with the car hire? “We´ve had cars returned with guns in them! We´ve had cars returned with underwear, all sorts! We´ve had a car returned with bullet holes in. We have had about six cars stolen but we have recovered them all, bar one. I´ve chased car thieves on my motorbike!” Carlo goes on … “I used to do a TV programme for Spanish television about luxury in Marbella, and many other TV programmes to promote Marbella. I was contacted years ago by BBC, ITV and the Discovery Channel, to do one of those programmes where they follow you around, but I didn´t do it. I guess they heard lots happened, like I´d go kite surfing where someone might get killed ‘cos it´s the craziest sport ever. So, the TV people said ‘we’d like to follow you around, we hear you get cars stolen and you chase

them on your motorbike and there is so much action going on. We hear you´re doing movies…’ Because we do a lot of movies with our cars. Our cars have been in the Tom Cruise movie filmed in Sevilla…Knight and Day; they wrote off two BMW’s filming that, they paid me no problem though.” Where did you take your driving test? And did you pass first time? “In England, when I was seventeen. And I passed first time,” he grins. And what was your first car? “I remember it, it was a rubbish car, a Vauxhall Viva, when I was seventeen. It´s probably worth about a hundred grand now. And my first car in Spain was a Renault Five Copa Turbo! They were amazing. I bought mine second hand but it was really expensive, even then.” Was your Dad into cars in a big way? “My Dad was in the Military but funnily enough he did have a second -hand car dealership in Manchester. He had very nice cars, but he wasn´t into cars.” And do you remember what he drove? “Yes, he had a Jaguar E Type; it was beautiful. But he had to sell it because when I was born I couldn´t fit in the back, so he swapped it for a four door Jaguar Sovereign. He was always a Jaguar owner.” What´s your view on electric cars? “I love them. We had the first Tesla ever about five years ago and we started to rent it out but there were not enough charging zones. We had to put a charging point in the Marbella Club Hotel ourselves. The authorities weren´t so quick to collaborate with Tesla. The Junta de Andalucia should support the smaller businesses a bit more and listen when we give advice. I am in favour of electric, but there are not enough charging points.”

So, what do you drive at the moment? “We have a huge selection of cars at the moment so I drive whatever suits the occasion. Today, school run - Mini Cooper Cabrio. If I´m surfing - four by four…I just pick from the pool, I´m very lucky.” And what is your favourite car of all time? “I like classics so I would say my American muscle car, noisy, loud… it turns heads and is fun to drive. So, of my own cars it would be the 1970 Chevelle, and if I could have any car in the world it would be a Mark I E Type Jaguar, like my Dad had. I don´t have one but that would be my favourite; yes, I´m a classic car fan. They are just gorgeous. I think there is a future for Classic cars here on the coast. We are providing Classic cars for a new Spanish TV series being filmed here; I find the cars through friends. So, if any of your readers have a Classic car and would like to hire it out, it won´t be rented to a private person, but will go in a movie or be used for a wedding.” You must have seen a lot of changes in Marbella over the years. “Yeah, I´ve seen the Port grow, I´ve seen a lot of changes, I´ve played golf with Sean Connery, Roger Moore. James Hunt, the Formula 1 driver was here for many years and we played squash once a fortnight. My lunches were amazing with Rod Stewart, Jimmy Tarbuck, all these guys.” We reminisce for a few moments… Do you remember the old cinema in Puerto Banús with the leaky roof? “Yeah, I remember holding up the umbrella with a Bacardi cola in the other hand, waiting for my friends. ‘cos we didn´t have phones in those days. When I was fourteen my Dad had one of the only phones in a private house in Spain and he would charge all the town to use

his phone, to call their lawyers etc. He had a little box called the Charity Box, so people would say ‘Can I come at twelve?’ and would drop money in the charity box.” What´s the biggest change you have seen here? “For me it was the Peseta to Euro change. If Spain had stayed with the Peseta this place would be rocking now. Spain became expensive.”

And on a last note Carlo, what do you do to relax? “I do track days in Ascari and I like to go to the Guadix race track, so I still race cars. I play golf and kite surf like crazy!” So, it´s all go, go, go… you don´t do anything to slow down? “No!” he exclaims emphatically, “Nothing to slow down!”

Carlo helps out with a non-profit organization in Nepal dedicated to protecting Nepali children and women from domestic violence, child labour and trafficking for prostitution. “It is based in Nepal but we do a lot of awareness events here and I speak for Maiti Nepal Marbella. Their speaker in the USA is Demi Moore, so, when I´m speaking here I have her come on live for me. I run the fund-raising auctions. It´s a great charity.”

MERCEDES-BENZ AVTR Mercedes-Benz VISION AVTR – inspired by AVATAR: The name of the groundbreaking concept vehicle stands not only for the close collaboration in developing the show car together with the AVATAR team but also for ADVANCED VEHICLE TRANSFORMATION. This concept vehicle embodies the vision of Mercedes-Benz designers, engineers and trend researchers for mobility in the distant future. Inspired by the world of Pandora – the VISION AVTR shows a completely new interaction between human, machine and nature. DESIGN AND UX Fusion of interior and exterior: The holistic concept of the VISION AVTR combines the design disciplines interior, exterior and UX on an unprecedented scale. Biometric connection: Instead of a conventional steering wheel, the multifunctional control element in the center console allows human and machine to merge. By placing the hand on the control unit, the interior comes to life and the vehicle recognizes the driver by his or her heartbeat and breathing. Immersive experience space: By simply lifting the hand, a menu selection is projected onto the palm of the hand, through which the passenger can intuitively choose between different functionalities. For example, real-time 3D graphics can be used to explore the fictional world of Pandora from different perspectives. The curved display module creates the visual connection between passengers and the outside world. SUSTAINABILITY AND DRIVE For the first time, the VISION AVTR concept vehicle is using a revolutionary battery technology based on graphene-based organic cell chemistry that is completely clean of rare earths and metals. The materials of the battery are compostable and therefore completely recyclable. In this way, electric mobility becomes independent of fossil resources. The vehicle as a living creature: The 33 “bionic flaps” on the back of the vehicle are reminiscent of scales of reptiles. They can communicate with the driver and through the driver with their outside world by means of naturally flowing movements in subtle gestures. Due to the possibility to drive the front and rear axles in the same or opposite direction, the VISION AVTR can move sideways by approximately 30 degrees, in contrast to conventional vehicles. The so-called “crab movement” gives the concept vehicle an animal-like appearance also for its motions.
