Happy New Year! Yes, it’s that time again—the turning of the page, the start of a brand-new year, and, hopefully, a whole new you, right? NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS. Well, I happen to be a believer in the whole new page thing, especially as it applies to the beginning of a month or a change in season because you can psyche yourself into gearing up and getting off whatever hamster wheel you happen to find yourself on. But why is the New Year’s thing just a bust for most people? Shouldn’t a New Year energize the hell out of all of us?

reading this magazine, he has chosen to live in Spain and to the Costa del Sol. My new year resolutions are, to start learning Spanish, to visit Cordoba, go to the gym more often, learn to kitesurf and make my wife even happier. Until next month - Hasta la vista amigos!

•••

A study found 46% of participants who made common New Year’s resolutions (e.g. weight loss, exercise programs, quitting smoking) were likely to succeed, over ten times more than those deciding to make life changes at other times of the year. In this edition of CARS2BUY we interviewed and are featuring a very inspirational guy who set all of his RESOLITIONS on a daily basis, Dorian Yates, six times Mr. Olympia, that’s a remarkable achievement and only achieved by a few people through history. His success has not turned Dorian big headed, but the opposite actually, I found him to be a great guy, jovial, down to earth and reflected. Dorian has taken the same choice as many of us who are

HELMETS CAN BE WORN IF PREFERRED The appearance of the McLaren Elva is as striking and unique as the driving experience. The low nose and pronounced front fender peaks provide visual drama and at the same time enhance forward vision. Large, carbon fibre rear fenders flow from the front of the door to the rear deck, while the height of the twin rear buttresses is minimised by using a deployable roll-over protection system.

Spanish taxation on property ownership by non-resident individuals with holiday homes in Spain. It is calculated at 1.1% of the Cadastral Value of the property or 2% where Cadastral Value has not been revised over the preceding 10 years. The tax rate that applies to this rental value is 19% for EU residents. However, the tax rate for non-EU residents is 24%. Income Tax on Rental Income when the property is rented to third parties.

Miguel Ángel Blanca Prieto

The ongoing buoyancy of the Spanish property market continues to make Spain an attractive place to invest in. If you are thinking of doing the same, then please spend some time reading my article below, which I hope will make clear to you the various obligations that come with property ownership in Spain. Obviously, this article is relevant to existing property owners too and, if you feel anything needs further explanation then please get in touch with me so that we can have a chat about whatever it is that concerns you. OWNING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN Income tax where there is no rental activity In Spain, persons who own second homes are taxed on a theoretical rental value of the second home, which also applies to foreigners 10

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

EU residents pay tax at 19% on rents actually received, and they are allowed to deduct property costs in calculating net taxable income. Non-EU residents pay tax at 24% and are taxed on the gross rent, as they cannot deduct any costs. For EU residents, 100% of costs that directly relate to rentals (e.g. agents fees, cleaning, laundry, maintenance, repairs) can be deducted. Other property costs (e.g. community fees, municipal taxes, loan interest, utilities) are time apportioned and only that part that relates to the actual number of rental days is deductible. WEALTH TAX Non-resident individuals are subject to wealth tax on the value of their Spanish assets. Each person has a general exemption for the first 700,000€ of net wealth. The tax rates are between 0,2% and 2,5%. Municipal Annual Property Taxes Properties are subject to the Impuesto sobre

Bienes Inmuebles (IBI) and is assessed on the Cadastral Value of the property at rates that vary with each municipality. In addition, the municipality will make charges for rubbish collection, typically bi-annually. SELLING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN Capital Gains Tax. Spain has the right to charge tax on the profit that arises on the sale of a Spanish property. It is calculated by taking the difference between the purchase and sale prices and allowing for incidental sales and purchase taxes and other costs. The tax rate is currently 19%. When the property is sold, the purchaser has to withhold 3% of the price and pay this to the tax office. This is a payment on account of the total tax payable by the vendor who then files a tax declaration paying or reclaiming the difference between the 3% withheld and the true tax charge. Municipal Capital Gains Tax – Plusvalía This tax is payable to the municipality and is based on the theoretical increase in building land prices over the years of ownership, limited to a maximum of 20 years. The taxable base is the land element of a property’s Cadastral Value. This has recently been declared illegal due to the issue of nonsense tax assessments based on deemed value increases during the recession years. Any assessments paid in the last 4 years should be challenged.

NO WONDER THEY NAMED IT AFTER A MISSILE

This is the Pershing 8x, one of eight models in the world’s fastest fleet of motor yachts. The Pershing stable ranges from 54ft to 140ft, with an average top speed of over 50mph. And yet, it’s not just about speed. A Pershing is also a model of premier league Italian designer luxury. You’d be hard pressed to find anything more comfortable or more beautiful.

FERRARI 250GTO From Rosso Corsa Marbella The Ferrari 250 GTO is a GT car produced by Ferrari from 1962 to 1964 for homologation into the FIA’s Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. It was powered by Ferrari’s Tipo 168/62 Colombo V12 engine. The “250” in its name denotes the displacement in cubic centimeters of each of its cylinders; “GTO” stands for Gran Turismo Omologata, Italian for “Grand Touring Homologated.” Just 36 of the 250 GTOs were manufactured between 1962 and 1964. This includes 33 cars with 1962-63 bodywork (Series I) and three with 1964 (Series II) bodywork similar to the Ferrari 250 LM. Four of the older 1962-1963 (Series I) cars were updated in 1964 with Series II bodies. SOLD FOR 70 MILLION DOLLARS When new, the 250 GTO cost $18,000 in the United States, with buyers personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his dealer

14

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

for North America, Luigi Chinetti. This model has since become highly desired by automobile collectors and sales have repeatedly set price records. The current record for world’s most expensive car was set in June 2018 when a 1963 250 GTO (chassis 4153GT) was sold in a private sale for $70 million. In 2004, Sports Car International placed the 250 GTO eighth on a list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s, and nominated it the top sports car of all time. Similarly, Motor Trend Classic placed the 250 GTO first on a list of the “Greatest Ferraris of All Time”. Popular Mechanics named it the “Hottest Car of All Time.” COMPETITION CAR The 250 GTO was designed to compete in Group 3 GT racing, where its rivals would include the Shelby Cobra, Jaguar E-Type and Aston Martin DP214. The development of the 250 GTO was headed by chief engineer Giotto Bizzarrini. Although Bizzarrini is usually

credited as the designer of the 250 GTO, he and most other Ferrari engineers were fired in 1962 due to a dispute with Enzo Ferrari . Further development of the 250 GTO was overseen by new engineer Mauro Forghieri, who worked with Scaglietti to continue development of the body. The design of the car was a collaborative effort and cannot be ascribed to a single person. The minimalist interior of a 250 GTO reflects the car’s racing intentions. There is no speedometer, seats are cloth-upholstered, and neither carpeting nor a headliner was installed. Cockpit ventilation is via exterior air inlets. The exposed metal gate defining the shift pattern became a Ferrari tradition maintained in production models until replaced by steering column-mounted paddle shifters in the 2000s.

China's elite marque, in the car-industry, Hongqi is getting a design makeover, and perhaps it's no coincidence that its upcoming sedan looks a bit like a Rolls-Royce Phantom—the automaker hired the former head of Rolls-Royce design a while ago. Is this the new design direction for the mysterious Chinese brand?.

Pancreatitis The party season is over, how is your pancreas doing? The pancreas is a small gland located behind stomach and helps with digestion. Drinking to much alcohol can cause inflammation in the pancreas. There is no real explanation how alcohol affects the pancreas but although the mechanism is not fully understood the link is proven and direct. Binge drinking – drinking large amount of alcohol during short period of time can increase the risk of developing acute pancreatitis. CHRONIC PANCREATITIS Chronic alcohol ingestion might lead to chronic pancreatitis which is characterised by irreversible damages in the pancreas gland that can lead to premature death or debilitating illnesses linked directly to the pancreas function. One is more likely to develop pancreatitis if drinks more than two alcoholic drinks a day or if obese, smoker, over 70 or have gallstones.

20

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

Many believe that alcoholism is the primary cause of this condition, but the most common cause is gallstones. These stones, tiny and pebble-like and made of hardened bile, can block the bile duct while passing through and stop the digestive enzymes from making it to the small intestine. When this happens, the stones are forced back into the pancreas, irritate the pancreatic cells, and triggers inflammation associated with pancreatitis.

Testing for pancreatic enzyme is also included as part of men’s health annual check-up at Mariami Clinic.

•••

MEDICAL EMERGENCY Symptoms of pancreatitis include nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain radiating to the back as well as tiredness. Your doctor might run an urgent blood test to look for elevated pancreatic enzymes as well might organize a scan. Acute pancreatitis is a medical emergency so do not hesitate to contact your doctor if you are concerned. In order to protect your pancreas and its function one should cut down on alcohol, eat balance diet, avoid crash diets, lose weight, exercise daily. Dr. Maria Rosca

PREMIER CRUISE The ‘A’ team of flybridge motor yachts

CARS2BUY COSTA DEL SOL

PREMIER CRUISE From Ventura Spain In the world of motor yachts, the name Ferretti is revered around the globe. The brand is one of a collection of celebrated names in the Italian Ferretti Group, alongside the likes of the legendary Riva, Pershing, Mochi Craft, Itama and CRN superyachts. The group is the most prestigious motor yacht builder in Europe, with 3000 employees and an annual turnover approaching 1 billion euros. Ferretti Yachts is their most successful range. With a fleet of nine models, ranging from 45ft to 95ft, Ferretti Yachts are the most desirable of all flybridge cruisers – as well as the fastest. No-one knows Mediterranean cruising quite like the experts at Ferretti. All of their immense knowledge and experience is invested in this exemplary range of motor yachts. In terms of design, technology, comfort, performance and sheer practicality, Ferretti has achieved near-perfection. Nothing else comes close. With their meticulous workmanship, immaculate finish and beautiful materials, Ferretti never fails to give their boats an exceptionally classy and luxurious feel. And it’s not just the decor and the furnishings that make them special, it’s also the way they design things, to ensure that cruising is a really relaxing and truly delightful pleasure. Of the many outstanding innovations introduced by Ferretti, one of the most welcome has been the development of huge windows, a formidable engineering feat in boats capable of 40mph. This has transformed the outlook, from not only the main deck living spaces, but also the sleeping cabins on the lower deck through large windows in the sides of the hull. To wake up in your elegant owner’s suite, bathed in sunshine, and with an uninterrupted sea view, takes some beating. (Continues).

25

But it’s the overall quality standards that really make Ferretti Yachts stand out. When it comes to engineering and build quality, Ferretti is the Mercedes of flybridge motor yachts. Under international RCD classifications, all Ferretti Yachts are rated in the top category ‘A’. That is rare indeed. Most other flybridge motor yachts are in the next category down. Build quality of this standard does cost a little more. But if you’re the kind of person who would chose a Mercedes over a Ford or a Peugeot, you’ll understand the difference, and the fact that it pays major dividends in the long run.

REAL ESTATE

If you are planning to sell your property, the following information will help you to avoid unpleasant last minute surprises. PLUSVALÍA The only tax a vendor is liable for on the property is the Plusvalía. This tax is judged on the increase in value of the land that the property was built on (not the property itself). This is a tax that is paid to the local authorities and is assessed in 3 ways – the time the property has been owned, the location of the property and the cadastral land value. In general, it is a small tax except in the case where the property has been owned for many years by the owner. AGENCY FEES This is what you will pay to an Estate Agent to market and sell your property. In general, agency commissions are 5% + VAT in Andalucía. This fee covers all costs (photography, marketing, touring clients etc.) and is only paid upon a successful sale.

you are a non-resident in Spain, then the tax authorities oblige the buyer to withhold 3% of the purchase price and pay it directly to the Spanish tax authorities. This ensures they will collect on the Capital Gains. Whatever difference that is left over after the taxes are paid will be refunded to you. So, if you have sold your property for 300.000€, you will only actually receive a cheque for 291.000€ and the other 9.000€ paid to the Spanish Tax authorities in lieu of taxes due. CAPITAL GAINS TAX Like everywhere in the world, the Spanish government wants its slice of cake when you sell and make a profit on the property sale. Generally speaking, Capital Gains Tax is assessed in the following way: 19% on the first 6.000€ 21% from 6.000€ - 50.000€ 23% from 50.000€ upwards.

ENERGY CERTIFICATE This has been compulsory in Spain since 2013, this is something you need to arrange BEFORE you put your property on the market. Energy certificate shows how energy-efficient the property is. It is graded from A-G, with A being the most energy efficient. The law requires the Notary to confirm the presence of this certificate, so you need to ensure you have one. Cost is between 100€ for an apartment to 600€ for a big villa.

The good news is that the government does make some allowances. All legitimate expenses relating to the property can be discounted. So, if you have done some reforms to the property (change the kitchen for example), these costs can be deducted from the amount of Capital Gains Tax due. Please note, that these expenses have to be shown using official invoices you have had from the builder / supplier. Other expenses are legal fees, agency fees, Notary fees, estate agent fees etc.

RETENTION This is an important item for a vendor to remember as many are unaware. If

To demonstrate this in an example, we will assume that Mr. Smith bought his property 10 years ago for 200.000€ and

30

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

he is selling it today for 300.000€. So his Capital gain is 100.000€. From this, his CGT due are: (6.000€ x 0.19) + (50.000€ x 0.21) + 44.000€ x 0.23) = 1.140€ + 10.500€ + 10.120€ = 21.760€ EXEMPTIONS TO CAPITAL GAINS TAX There are some exemptions for Capital Gains Tax such as: • If you are older than 65 years old and can show you have lived there officially for 3 years. • If it is your primary residence and you reinvest the proceeds into another property within 2 years. Whether you’re planning to buy or sell a home on the Costa del Sol, it is advisable to use a professional real estate agent who can help you to reduce the selling costs and get the best possible outcome for You.

BMW M8 TEXT HARALD BRORSTAD PHOTO BMW

The BMW M GmbH is embarking on its first foray into the world of luxury motoring with two new high-performance sports cars, the BMW M8 Competition Coupé and M8 Competition Convertible. The new models derive their performance from the most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M GmbH car: a high-revving V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology developing 625hp. Two turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, direct injection with increased pressure, plus cooling and oil supply systems designed for driving at the limit on the track combine to deliver supreme performance and handling. The high-performance power unit is aligned to an eight-speed M Steptronic, before it is channelled to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The rear-wheel bias of M xDrive delivers assured handling with optimised traction. The performance-focused character of the engine and transmission enables the BMW M8 Competition Coupé to sprint from zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and from zero to 124 mph in 10.6 seconds while the Convertible will complete the task in 3.3 and 11.1 seconds respectively. All models have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, rising to 189 mph if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified. The Coupé’s average fuel consumption is 25.2-25.4 mpg with CO2 emissions of 253-252 g/km while the Convertible’s fuel combined fuel consumption is 25-25.2 mpg with CO2 emissions of 256-254 g/km. DORIAN

YATES TEXT SHEREE TUPPER PHOTO HARALD BRORSTAD

We recently caught up with six times Mr. Olympia champion, Dorian Yates, to have a chat about the man behind the muscle… So, tell us, who is Dorian Yates? “That´s an ever-evolving answer. I think I´m somewhat of an enigma to many people because there are a lot of different aspects to Dorian Yates. Obviously, first is my background. I won six Mr. Olympia´s which is the premier professional bodybuilding title in the World; it´s universally accepted to be ‘The One’. You have to win a regional contest, then the national championship, which in my case was the British one, then you can get a professional status to compete professionally. Then you have to place within the top three of one of those shows in order to enter into the Mr. Olympia. So, when you get to Mr. Olympia you are with the 25 best bodybuilders in the World. It´s an American dominated sport but I am the only one who has won the title whilst living outside of the USA.” Was there anyone in particular who inspired you? “The first person who caught my eye when I was younger was Bruce Lee. He had a great physique, not like a bodybuilder though, he was very lean. So, I started from there, doing press ups, squats etc. in my room. But I didn´t start seriously until quite late due to life´s circumstances. I left home when I was sixteen and didn´t have anywhere permanent to live. (continues)

I was in a youth jail when I was eighteen for a few months, just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time really. It was a very strict regime in there. They wanted to instill some discipline so that we would never want to do wrong again, basically.”

my table’, so I used that as energy. Plus, I wanted to create a legacy of not just winning, but of pushing the boundaries. I was called the Game Changer of body building.”

And did it work?

“Some were, others weren´t. I had a couple of years with serious injuries and they were really difficult. I tore my biceps in 1994 six weeks before the competition which probably should have put me out, but didn´t. And three weeks before the competition in 1997 I tore a triceps tendon which was severe. I managed to work round it. I was maybe at 90 per cent, but I was still good enough to beat the other guys. After that I knew there was no point in competing as I could never be as good as I was, not after that injury. The reality of retiring hit me later on. I had no role in life anymore. Before, I had had an all-consuming mission that all my energy went into, and then it was gone. It´s very hard to deal with. I think a lot of sports people really struggle with that.”

“Well, it did for me. I don´t know about everyone else.” He laughs and goes on. “We did gym work there and I was better than everyone else. I was treated differently by everyone, even the prison officers, because I had this work ethic and discipline that I put into the training. They encouraged me to do something with it when I got out. So, when I came out it took me a bit of time to get a job and an apartment and I decided then that I was going to do bodybuilding and compete. It would have been easy to have got into more bad groups and carried on like that, but I was always a bit different to everyone around me and knew I was going to do something.” The first Mr. Olympia title that you won in 1992…. How surprised were you to win it? “On my first attempt at Mr. Olympia I got a close second and that was the first time anyone had done that, so I knew I had the potential to win it. The guy who beat me the first time was an eight times champion and he retired after that. So, the following year the title was open and I was the favourite. After winning the second one I was then unbeatable for a long time.” Seven years, in fact. 1992 to 1997! It must have taken immense mental strength, as well as the physical aspect, to maintain that level. “It´s really like an obsession. I started by thinking how much I wanted to beat the others, thinking everything was against me and I couldn´t do it as I wasn´t from America… I used that as energy. And then when I won it I thought ´these guys want to take it away from me, they want to take from my family, take food off 40

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

And did each year become harder?

Who nicknamed you The Shadow? “That was given to me by a journalist, Peter McGough, who was an Editor of a small bodybuilder magazine in the UK. At the time of my first contest there were already rumours of a kid from Birmingham that had been training for a year or so, and who was going to compete. I was quite taken aback by all the attention. Peter did the first interview with me and named me The Shadow as I was unlike anyone else in the profession in that I didn´t want to be noticed. I just wanted to be in the gym, covered up, and only present my physique at a contest. I was an enigma as I would show up, win the contest, and disappear, like a shadow!” After you finished competing, then what? “Well I went into a period of personal crisis. I went through a divorce, quite severe depression because I didn´t really

know who I was outside of my profession. I had a lack of direction and identity. I had had so many years of self-discipline and restriction that I then spent time partying and drinking. So, I went through that whole scene for a while which I don´t really regret. I actually don´t regret anything in my life. I think everything is an opportunity.” You have a supplement company, DY Nutrition. “Yes, DY Nutrition is going well and has been re-launched in the last two years. We have a big management and investment team and are rapidly growing. Check out the website dynutrition.com.” So, what about your diet now? “It´s totally different as my lifestyle is different. What I need now is mobility, flexibility, cardiovascular health. I´m bordering on being vegetarian. There are different diets for different goals so what might be the best diet for building muscle might not be the best for your health or for longevity. I believe that if you eat 90 per cent of your food from whole food, plant sources, that´s probably the best diet you can get. “ Tell us about your wife. “My wife, Gal, yes well it´s quite a romantic story of how we met. I met her through a Brazilian friend of mine. He came to live in Birmingham in the 80’s and was training in my gym. He was a professor of exercise. He returned to Brazil, and was on the beach one day when he saw this woman with an amazing physique. He asked her what fitness competitions she had done but she had only done dance, ballet and aerobic competitions. He asked if he could train her, as he believed she could become a World Champion within a year. So, she trained, and within a year she was a Brazilian, South American and World Champion. She didn´t have a boyfriend, and though he tried his luck, he didn´t get anywhere,” he says laughing, “then he introduced her to me at a seminar I went to do in Brazil, and

that´s where it all started. She moved to England and we got married in 2010.” And your son, Lewis, does bodybuilding? “Yes, he trains, and is going to be working for the company now. He has followed in my footsteps a little bit. He coaches people also. He grew up with it, though he doesn´t have the competitive side which maybe is good.” So, what about cars? Do you have an interest in cars? “I like nice cars and have had a few over the years. I had a BMW seven series in 1991 and I had it customized. I had so much done to it that people used to stop me on the street and ask me what it was. I also had a Mercedes. I had an Aston Martin DB9 when I went through my playboy, James Bond, phase, until I met Gal, and she said ‘What´s this stupid little car? I can´t get any shopping in there.’ And I said ‘It´s a work of art! You´re supposed to be impressed by this. It´s hand built in England. Look at the leather.’ And she said ‘It´s too small.’ So, I had to get a Range Rover.” He shrugs his shoulders and laughs, “So, yes I do like cars, but they are not a super passion of mine.” And what do you do to relax? “I like reading a lot. I do yoga a couple of times a week. I meditate. I´ve been doing that for probably four or five years now. I have been used to focusing in the gym, mentally making my surroundings disappear which was a form of meditation.” How long have you been in Marbella and what do you think of it? “I just love Marbella. I walk on the beach with my dog.” Dorian has a French Bulldog and is a dog lover. He does a lot of work with and is an Ambassador for the animal shelter Triple A. “We walk in the mountains. There is so much here. I didn´t know that when I first came here as I was still in my party phase, so I stayed in the Port and

at Olivia´s. There´s tons of stuff here… mountains, lakes, waterfalls. Another thing I like is biking, so I am always off up to Istán on my mountain bike. I wouldn’t be anywhere else. It´s not a big town but everything you need is here. Restaurants and night clubs are great. I can be on the beach and then in the mountains within half an hour. You can get to anywhere in Europe within three or four hours. The weather is probably the best in Europe. The atmosphere is relaxed. Here I believe it is such a healthy environment.” I believe you have made a film recently? “Yes, this is the second documentary. We did one a couple of years ago called ‘Inside The Shadow’ but this is a new one and it’s really my life story. It´s been filmed in England, Spain and in Costa Rica, which is where I do my Ayhuasca retreat. This is psychedelic plant medicine that people drink and you go on a journey. It’s very therapeutic and has huge spiritual and psychological benefits. It helps you to see a much bigger picture of the world and of reality. It´s hard to describe, but everyone that I know who has done it says that it is the best thing they have ever done. I first tried it about seven years ago, and then I spoke about it on some Podcasts that I did. The film is called The Original Mass Master and it is my life story. It´s been a best-selling sports documentary of itunes and Google. The body building career has given me a big following, and I have been speaking on Podcasts for the last year or so and it has had a huge impact . I did one with Joe Rogan (American martial artist, podcaster, sports commentator and comedian), and it had over 2.5 million views.” You appear to have quite a spiritual side. Do you consider yourself to be a spiritual person?

with our thoughts we can change our own personal vibration like turning the dial on a radio. We can turn the dial with our own practices and thoughts. Meditation slows down your thoughts so you can recognize the negative thoughts and stop them before they grow. I believe everything that happens in our life is a projection of us.” Do you have a philosophy you live by? “I try to have a positive effect on myself. The whole world we live in is a collection of our projective energies I believe, so I can’t change other peoples’ energies, but I can change mine, and then I may have an effect on you. If we all try to improve ourselves then the world that we live in will be different. When I was younger I wanted to go on the street and protest and riot, but I realise now that’s not the way to do it. You have to change yourself if you want to change the world. I´m focusing on being a better version of myself. It fascinates me to learn all the time. “ And on that note, he is off up to Triple A with daughter, Tahnee…. all in a day´s work!

TRAINING TRAINING

There is nothing better TRAINING TRAININGthan a good ‘sweater’ for the snow TRAINING TRAINING

TRAINING We need to consider the demands on our

muscle-skeletal system and of course, our endurance system. It’s also really important to think about TRAINING the lower body, most of the pressure will be on the legs so, what can we do in order to support our legs and get them ready for the ski season?

Emanuel Poggio, owner, Health First Studio

The winter is here and it’s now time to prepare our body for the winter sports. One of the most popular and the one we love most, is skiing. Everyone has a less than pleasant, but memorable experience of the first practice after a long summer - skiing all day long until our legs are jelly. Then the aches and pains come later on that evening, getting considerably worse when you have to squat over the public toilets! Here’s a plan to avoid this uncomfortable pain, reduce any injuries and enjoy the plentiful snow - let’s knit our ‘sweater’!

48

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

• Core training • Squats (front/back/statics) • Lunges (back/front) • Single leg dead lifts • Monster walks • Glute bridge

When it comes to endurance, we are looking for a nice, coordinated pattern of motion to perform the exercises to the best form. We need to get used to training with ‘liquid acid’ running up our muscle… • Multi-jumps (squat jumps, lunge jumps, jump-downs) • Running or cycling (long, short and mediums intervals, mountain bike down-hill) • Ski-erg trainer • Jumping and landing on unlevel surfaces will help to prepare our neuromotor system to anticipate the piste and perform better. How much we do? What about strength training?

I propose an 8 week program to prevent injuries and compound your skills. Of course, the best is to adapt to an individual training plan, but we can consider some general rules! The first three weeks we’ll gradually increase the volume of training, and during the fourth week it’s time for a good rest. Then three more weeks of decreasing the volume of training and increasing the intensity (the amount of weight we lift) although it’s good to mix heavy loads with light lifts closer to the end of the sixth week. This gives some variety of training and allows the muscles to rest too. Our endurance training will follow in almost the same rhythm, increasing the duration step by step, keeping the intensity low - after the fourth week, time to mix the different intensities like we do in fartlek training. It’s recommendable to make the training as similar to the sport as possible, so during the summer could do cable-ski, wakeboard, water ski, etc… This is just a light orientation for those who love skiing. If you want to know more and how to make the plan more specific, don’t forget we can help ;-).

ASTON MARTIN an suv with the soul of a sports car

DBX TEXT HARALD BRORSTAD PHOTO ASTON MARTIN

CARS2BUY ISSUE 003 COSTA DEL SOL

55

20 November 2019, Beijing, China: A bold new chapter and a landmark moment in Aston Martin’s illustrious 106-year history, Aston Martin unveiled its first SUV and a model that probabely will propel the brand to new heights worldwide. That model, is DBX. Utilising bonded aluminium, a construction method Aston Martin has refined through the development of its sports cars, the body structure is both very light and incredibly stiff. Right from its genesis, it was designed to allow maximum room in the cabin, giving spaciousness for both front and rear occupants. Meanwhile, the stiffness inherent in the design of the new platform has also enabled DBX to achieve great dynamics both on and off-road. Powered by a new version of the characterful 4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine found in DB11 and Vantage, DBX features an impressive output of torque. With a sound character that is unquestionably Aston Martin, the active exhaust system ensures this is a car that can sound refined one moment and exhilarating the next. The engine’s versatility isn’t restricted to its vocals either; the turbocharged V8 has cylinder deactivation to enhance fuel economy, yet it can also propel DBX from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 290 km/h. There are many optional accessory packages offered. These packages will tailor the car even further to customers’ needs, sports or pastimes. For example, the Pet package will include, amongst other things, a portable washer to help attend to the needs of a muddy dog after a walk. Alternatively, the Snow package will deliver boot warmers to make a ski trip just that little bit more pleasurable. DBX is on sale now, with first deliveries scheduled to begin Q2 2020.
