If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Eat ‘Em Spearfishing Tournament

This spearfishing tournament is a joint effort between Bistro-By-the-Sea, Hampton Inn of Morehead City, Discovery Diving, Carteret Catch and the Eastern Carolina Artificial Reef Association (ECARA). The goal of the tournament is to raise public awareness of the lionfish invasive species problem in the Atlantic, to create the means for a sustainable commercial fishery and to encourage the sale of locally caught seafood. All Beach Runs (1 Mile, 5K and 10K) will take place on the Atlantic Beach Circle, weather permitting (no make-up dates will be scheduled). Pay up front for all seven Beach Runs and a T-shirt for $20 per person or $5 per run with T-shirts available for purchase for $6 while supplies last. Individual run times by age group will be recorded & published in the Carteret News-Times. Final awards will not be presented. 5K and 10K races start at 6:30 p.m.; 1M starts at 6:35 p.m. Print a registration form from www.ccparksrec.com or pick one up at the Parks & Recreation office (1702 Live Oak Street, Suite 300, in Beaufort). International Surfing Day

Marine Life Cruise

International Surfing Day was started so that everyone from the most avid surfer to the person who never tried but always wanted to can celebrate their love for the beach, the ocean and surfing. This day is a great chance for surfers and surf lovers to get together and watch surf movies such as the classic Endless Summer. It’s a reason to go out and rip it or rent a board from your local surf shop and attempt to stand up for the first time. This event is also a great opportunity to gather up some trash from the beach while hanging out with your friends to keep it from reaching the water that we love so much. Great 4th Race: Fun Competition on the Creek This annual Independence Day race is an event of the North Carolina Maritime Museum’s chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association and is open to all traditionally rigged sailing craft. It is, in spirit, a reenactment of the historic voyages made by small boats to carry news of the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the communities along the outer banks of North Carolina. The Great Fourth Race is really a rally of sorts. The varying speeds of the boats participating dictate shorter legs and regrouping the fleet to keep the boats closer together.

The course is announced Saturday by the race committee to suit wind and weather conditions.

The course is designed for a race that lasts between 4 and 8 hours, covers between 6 and 20 miles and fosters fun competition. The start and finish line for the race is right off the dock of the Harvey Smith Watercraft Center. Bond & Build

On Saturday, May 4, the Beaufort waterfront was alive with screaming skillsaws and hoots and hollers as 18 teams competed in the Beaufort Boatbuilding Challenge to see who could build and row the best boat in four hours. If you were at the event as a spectator, you might have thought that building a boat might be an enjoyable activity—but perhaps not at a such breakneck pace.

Well, the NC Boatbuilding Heritage Foundation, the organizers of the challenge, are now giving you a chance to join in the boatbuilding at a more relaxed tempo!

Over the two days of Father’s Day weekend, the foundation will host six teams of two people each to build the same boat that is constructed during the four-hour challenge, only slowly, with friendly coaches. Participants end up with a high-quality 12-foot rowboat to take home. The event is called the Bond and Build and encourages fathers, grandfathers, daughters, sons, and other family members to work together for a day and a half building a complete boat … and spending some meaningful time together.

“We frequently have people come to us who say they would like to build a boat, but are intimidated by the feverish pace of the normal challenge,” says event organizer Vic Fasolino. “The idea of a Father’s Day event was presented to us by the Carteret

Teams will work on their boats all day Saturday and half of Sunday with coaches who have actually been competitors in the Boatbuilding Challenge in the past. All large power tools will be provided, but teams are asked to provide some of their own basic hand tools. No boatbuilding experience is needed, although familiarity with tools is useful. The construction will wrap up with a Sunday barbecue lunch, then the teams will take the boats out on Taylor’s Creek for some rowing exercise. The fee for the event is $450 and teams will need to make provisions to take the boats home.

Not so much. Fortunately there are ways to protect hair from the harmful elements of our environment. I have worked with hair professionally on the beach for over 16 years, and I have learned a lot about how sun, wind, salt water and chlorine can cause damage to the hair. These elements can cause hair to become lifeless, have more split ends, thin out and (even more frighteningly) to actually fall out.

Split ends occur when the hair shaft divides into two or more pieces. Hair begins to split once the protective layer around the hair strand breads open. Once it starts, the split can continue all the way up the shaft. The only way to stop it is to cut the hair off above the split. Sun, wind, salt water and chlorine are some of the causes of this breakdown in the protective layer of the hair. Chemical treatments and overuse of hot tools like curling irons and blowdryers also cause splitting. When chemically treating your hair, seek a professional trained to pretreat the hair before applying a chemical. You should always use a product to protect your hair from heat prior to blowdrying or curling. I recommend Hot off the Press by Paul Mitchell or Heat Styling Protection by Moroccanoil.

Even though living at the coast has its disadvantages when it comes to hair there are ways to protect and treat our locks before and after being in the sun, wind, salt water or chlorine. GROWING TOMATOES

Growing tomatoes can be challenging, but if you make a few good decisions at the beginning of the season, you can reap the rewards!

Growing tomatoes in Eastern North Carolina can be challenging. There are many diseases that threaten the success of gathering vine ripe tomatoes in the summer garden. Planting tomatoes properly and choosing disease resistant varieties are the first steps toward growing tomatoes successfully.

Plant your tomatoes in well-drained soil amended with plenty of compost, especially if you have sandy soil. Plant your tomatoes where they will get at least eight hours of sunlight; try to avoid wetting the leaves when watering.

Space them about three feet apart to allow for good air circulation. Tomatoes will need support, so be sure to cage or stake tomatoes after planting. Fertilize with 5-10-10 and avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. Liquid fertilizers are good for right after planting or for a quick boost, but often contain too much nitrogen, which often results in a lot of green growth but little fruit. Adding landplaster or lime at planting will help prevent blossom-end rot. There are also liquid calcium sprays available to help stop blossom-end rot.

When choosing tomato varieties, there are several things to consider. Consider whether to choose determinate or indeterminate varieties. Determinate plants produce most of their fruit at one time and usually don’t grow quite as tall.

Indeterminate varieties grow larger and produce over a longer period of time.

Cherry tomatoes are the easiest and most productive to grow. Heirloom varieties usually have the best flavor, but lack disease resistance.

Next, choose varieties that have as much disease resistance as possible and grow several different varieties. You will see a series of letters on the plant tag when purchasing tomato plants. Each letter represents a disease that variety is resistant to. Choosing disease-resistant plants will increase your chances of success.

There are several diseases that can affect tomatoes, and many of them are preventable (early blight, late blight, and bacterial speck) by using products such as chlorothalonil, mancozeb, neem oil or copper soap.

Most wilt diseases live in the soil and cannot be cured. Avoid planting

tomatoes in a garden where these have been a problem before. You may consider growing your tomatoes in containers if you have had problems with wilt in the past. Tomato spotted wilt virus is another disease there is no treatment for. When these viruses are detected remove the plants immediately.

You will also want to watch for stink bugs and tomato hornworms. Stink bugs can be treated with products containing permethrin of bifenthrin. Horn worms can be controlled using spinosad or dipel.

Growing a nice crop of tomatoes in your garden is possible but you must be proactive when it comes to disease control. The rewards will be well worth your time.

am so excited to share with you this information about these dedicated neighbors who labor in love to provide us with healthy, chemicalfree produce. Farm-fresh produce may seem like part of country living but it has become much more important today with the increased use of pesticides and GMOs. In an effort to increase crop production and profits, scientists are tinkering with plant DNA and making changes to our crops. Having a choice of locally grown, chemical-free produce has become important for many of us for this reason. We also benefit from having freshly harvested crops.

Produce found in the large food chains likes Lowes and Food Lion have been harvested before ripening and traveled long distances, thereby losing nutrients and flavor.

I almost called this article Our Other Local Heros. Let’s face it: farming is not a very profitable business for the farmer. It involves backbreaking physical labor, long hours and little time off. Crop outcome is vulnerable to weather, insects, disease, and pests. No one goes into farming to get rich. It is a calling to service.

All three of the folks I spoke with were motivated by health needs and a desire to be closer to nature. When you visit these farms, they do appear idyllic.

Lush greens, rich earth, roaming chickens, abundant bees and birds, growing fields and abundant trees. The whole place somehow seems more peaceful and happier. Being in nature is healing. And I can feel that peace, happiness and healing in the eggs, herbs and produce they offer.

Willow Green Farms Regina and Mike Beasley began their farm in 2007. While they have 23 acres, they farm only a small portion of their place at present. They started out as commercial fishermen living in Swansboro most of their lives. They ran Bull’s Place restaurant between the Swansboro bridges until 2005 when they sold it and began their own personal journey to health. They were inspired by their love of nature and a desire to live with less stress. They planted vegetables and herbs in raised beds in order to feed themselves chemical-free foods. Quickly, they realized that they could share their abundance with the Swansboro community.

As Mike is still working full time as a fisherman, much of the routine labor is done by Regina. All the plants are started from their own seeds. Early in the morning you can find Regina working with her plants as they share their quiet wisdom! (Her favorite part of the business) Herbs are Regina’s special love and biggest seller with rosemary, basil, thyme, chives, cilantro and mint available already. Currently, Willow Creek Farm offers farm-fresh eggs, lettuce, kohlrabi, fennel, broccoli and many fresh herbs. She sells to two local Swansboro restaurants, Saltwater Grill and White Oak Bistro. She can be found with her wonderful eggs and produce for pickup in Swansboro at Second Wind Yoga Studio from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and at Christina’s Wine Boutique in Cedar Point on Thursday by appointment. Veggieboxnc.com Veggiebox is a company started by Audra and Corky Odun in May 2012.

Audra came from Down East while Corky’s family has farmed 100 acres in Swansboro for six generations. Corky’s father runs the chemical-free farm while Corky and Audra run Veggiebox, a company that offers NC-grown, chemical-free weekly produce delivery to your front door.

Like the Beasleys, the Oduns work full time in other professions to make ends meet while carrying out their labor of love. Audra is a hairstylist in Morehead City; Corky is a fisherman. Although that seems like more than enough hard work for any couple, they manage to take orders, fill the boxes and deliver the produce themselves to about 70 families each week in season.

Walking onto their family farm, you could easily forget what century it is with the tranquility that abides there. Happy horses and beautiful chickens roam freely. Everyone is smiling and welcoming. Sweet Poppy Farms is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm dedicated to serving its community organically grown produce through markets and memberships for the past eight years.

Here crops are rotated, with the animals free to roam the areas “resting” from crops and at the same time fertilizing them. While not certified organic, The Sweets use no chemical fertilizers or feeds and treat their animals like family, with holistic remedies. He calls the farm Morganic, referring to being more than organic—natural, honest, sustainable and caring.

Q: Where is a good place to find sand dollars?

A: Good hunting grounds for these prized beach souvenirs include shorelines of unpopulated beaches, uninhabited islands, small islets in sounds, and long, open seashores.

Most shell seekers are familiar with the smooth, white, fragile sand dollars found washed up on shore. These are sand dollar skeletons that have been bleached by the sun. Live sand dollars, which should never be collected, are dark brown or greenish and covered with short, bristly spines. Sand dollars live buried in loose sand in shallow water. Their short spines are in constant motion to slowly move them along and transfer food to their mouth on the underside of their shell. They are members of a group of animals known as echinoderms, meaning “spiny skinned,� and their round shape is actually a flattened form of sea urchins.

Like sea urchins, sea stars, sea cucumbers and other members of this group, sand dollars feed largely on organic matter mixed among sand grains. The mouth is a complex structure containing five teeth that grind food. When a dead sand dollar is shaken, the teeth can be heard rattling inside.

The holes in sand dollar shells enable the animal to bury itself quickly for protection and feeding, and also allow water to pass freely through the shell to help keep the sand dollar from being lifted off the bottom by wave action.

Sand dollars are food for many species of fish, including flounder, cod and haddock, as well as for sea stars.

wild friends from the North Canada Geese are everywhere ‌ but how well do you really know them?

Canada Geese have become so adapted to living among us they display a few behaviors humans don’t care for and therefore get a bum rap. They are known to be a little pushy or downright aggressive when we humans get too close to their goslings, but that’s just their way of being protective parents. They also have a tendency to mess up our so-called “human areas” with their droppings. Maybe they wouldn’t if they could help it, but they can’t. It’s that whole involuntary elimination thing that all birds (except the ostrich) have, and birds poo every 12 to 15 minutes. Geese are just much bigger birds and like to hang out in groups, which explains the size and number of nasties they leave in a parking lot, on a sidewalk or golf course.

When Canada Geese (not “Canadian Geese,” as many people refer to them) are admitted to the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter in Newport it’s always due to injuries incurred as a result of human interference— intentional or unintentional.

Geese are hit by cars. When that happens, it usually means two geese will be coming to the clinic because geese mate for life and the uninjured mate will not leave the other’s side. Uninjured mates wait patiently by our pond while the shelter admits are treated and eventually released. Rehabilitators at our shelter have removed fishing line that could possibly amputate a leg or prevent flight if left unattended. We have even extracted an arrow shot right through a goose that fortunately missed all its vital organs. The goose abuse stories are endless and always bring on a tear jerk reaction to those of us who care about and treat these majestic birds. Each Canada Goose has its own unique shelter story and personality, and we never forget them once they’ve passed through our facility.

Most people know what these birds look like. They are the tall, stately birds with long black necks and heads with white chinstraps. Their brownish-gray, robust bodies cover the ground with a sophisticated and royal gait. People also know that honking coming from a V formation overhead means a flock of geese.

But did you know that they can cover 1,500 miles in just 24 hours with a good tailwind?

Canada geese are adaptable to many habitats and can thrive by grazing on wherever grasses, grains or berries are available.They mate at three years of age

and nest in areas surrounded by or close to water.

Retention ponds in heavily populated areas have recently become popular sites to nest and raise their young. Other nest sites include planter boxes and nesting structures provided specifically for geese.

They line their bowl-shaped nests with grass, leaves and goose down. A pair of geese may return to the same nest site year after year. Normally six to ten eggs are laid in the nest in the spring and are incubated by the female goose while the gander (the male) stands guard nearby. The female leaves the nest only briefly each day to feed. Eggs hatch after 25 to 30 days of incubation. The young can walk, swim and feed within 24 hours.

At the shelter we have enjoyed the return of mated pairs and some of their offspring for many years now.

We feel privileged to watch the goslings grow. Adult geese are often seen leading their goslings in a line, usually with one parent in the front and the other at the back. Ever on the alert, they will attack or chase away by hissing, biting and wing slapping anything from a small bird to a human if they perceive a threat to their children. Although geese are known to be hostile toward unfamiliar geese, during breeding season they tend to assemble their dependent young in groups called crèches and care for them communally to provide more protection.

The goslings are able to fly at about ten weeks and will remain with their family group for about one year.

The average lifespan of a Canada Goose is 10 to 25 years. There are reports of geese living to more than 30 in the wild.

Predators of Canada Geese and their eggs include humans, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, bobcats and foxes, as well as gulls, eagles, crows, ravens and magpies.

Canada Geese are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act which prevents anyone from intentionally killing or taking any geese or goslings without a valid permit issued by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, pursuant to federal regulations.

The Carteret Community Theatre: Over a Half Century of Entertainment Since October of 1948 there has been an amateur theatre group here in Carteret County. That original group reorganized in November of 1953 as the Carteret Community Theatre.

During those early years, the CCT often consisted of a nucleus of only eight or ten active members. Productions were mounted by inviting persons from throughout the county to “trod the boards” or, if they had no inclination to act, to help with operations backstage. To this day the CCT has never had its own theater auditorium, so plays have been performed in schools, restaurants, tents or storefronts.

In the late 1950s, the theatre’s small bank account began to grow with the production of historical plays based on local figures such as the Confederate spy, Emeline Pigott. This trend continued into the 1960s with productions based on Blackbeard the pirate and the privateer Otway Burns. All of these plays were written and produced by Ruth Barbour without royalty fees charged to the theatre. In recent years, musicals and children’s shows have been high on our audiences’ popularity list.

Altogether, in the past 59 years, the CCT has mounted over 160 major productions—an average of almost three a year.

In addition to producing plays and musicals, theatre personnel have written and performed TV commercials for the literacy council, participated in a textbook-on-tape project at WCHS, aided drama clubs at ECHS and at Cherry Point, provided actors and actresses for videos concerning social issues, given numerous programs for local civic clubs and for academically gifted students and performed special theatrics at KidFest and for the County Historical Society.

The theatre has sponsored performances here by the Charlotte Opera Company, the National Shakespeare Company and the NC Shakespeare Festival Company. Since 1994 the CCT has co-sponsored residencies each year by artists with the Missoula Children’s Theatre, giving local children unique theatrical

opportunities.

When I was a little girl I collected little cow figurines. Those tiny ceramic cows were the full extent of any farming background I had. So its rather surprising now that I find myself raising chickens and growing my own food in my backyard in the middle of the city.

I’m not exactly sure what possessed me to bring home those two little baby chicks that spring a few years ago but I’m glad I did, because those little feathered friends changed my life. We now have several laying hens who provide us with fresh eggs and comic relief every day in exchange for a small amount of layer feed, kitchen scraps, garden surplus, weeds, grass and bugs from our yard. When I started on this adventure I didn’t have any idea what I was doing and some days I feel like I still don’t, but I’m learning as I go and growing as I learn. I spend a lot of time working in the garden. I find it to be very therapeutic. Feeling the warmth of the sun and listening to the chickens clucking and singing while cultivating your own little piece of earth—there’s nothing better. These days I jokingly refer to myself as a first-generation self-taught urban farmer.

about knowing where your food comes from, watching it grow full circle from seed to supper or collecting eggs for breakfast that are still warm from the nest.

You can’t buy that kind of homegrown satisfaction in the grocery store. Raising and growing your own food is more than a lifestyle—it is life. We as a nation have grown so disconnected from our food in this country in recent years. If it’s not fast or easy, we don’t eat it. The average consumer thinks about food several times per day, but actually knows next to nothing about how it is brought from farm to table.

The general perception still seems to be that food is grown on family-run farms.

In actuality the majority of our nation’s food supply is controlled by a handful of large corportaions which often put profits ahead of consumer health. With the growing number of food recalls, its even more important that we know where our food is coming from.

Producing as much of your own food as possible and patronizing your local farmers markets and local farms eliminates some of this worry and puts money back into your own local economy.

There is a quote that resonates with me: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” {Teddy Roosevelt}. I may be temporarily stuck in the suburbs while dreaming of my future farm but I won’t let that keep me from farming my yard. Each year our garden gets bigger and I seem to find new nooks and crannies to grow edibles. You can too! Even if you don’t have a big backyard, or any yard for that matter, a sunny balcony or porch can supply you with more vegetables and herbs than you think. For foods that you are unable to produce yourself, seek out local sources in your area and support your local economy.

By supporting local farmers today, you are helping to ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow.

No matter what, it’s sometimes hard to find an activity that everyone will enjoy, even in a beautiful coastal community such as this one. That’s just one of the many reasons to cruise the marshes of the White Oak River this summer with the NC Coastal Federation and Hammocks Beach State Park. Each cruise is different because you never know what you’ll see on any given day, and they’re perfect for vacationers and locals.

Cruises are planned for June 4 and 18; July 2, 16 and 30; and August 13. Each cruise begins at 11 a.m. (please arrive by 10:45 a.m.) at Hammocks Beach State Park (Map #15) in Swansboro and will be led by federation and park staff.

Space is limited on the covered ferry, and reservations are recommended. There is no charge for the two-hour program, but the ferry ride costs $5. All ages are welcome, though the program is geared towards adults and older children.

Sam Bland, a federation naturalist, narrates the cruises. He’s a retired state park ranger and park superintendent, who spent most of his 30 years with the park division at Hammocks Beach. His specialties were resource management and environmental education. Needless to say, he knows these marshes like the back of his hand. preserve it and can identify almost any species of local wildlife and vegetation.

Karen and Tom Naftzger moved to Emerald Isle three years ago from Ohio where they lived on Lake Erie. They’re retired and now spend most of their time volunteering for various organizations such as the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort. They attended one of the cruises last year and said they’d definitely be back.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Karen. “It’s nice to get the background (of the area).

I’d do it again.”

Tom also found the cruise informative and appreciated the perspective of the ferry, where you are able to get a different view of the islands.

The covered ferry winds its way through the estuaries in and around the White Oak River and Bogue Sound, where Bland begins by discussing issues that affect the local water quality, such as stormwater runoff, fertilizer use, roads, parking lots and manmade bulkheads.

He also uses the opportunity to discuss what can be done to help. “There is good news,” he said. “There are things you can do.”

One of the stops along the cruise is the site of a joint venture between the park and the federation, in which 40 percent of the impervious surfaces were removed and replaced with “rain gardens,” resulting in a

large decrease in stormwater runoff from one of the park’s parking areas.

The cruise continues with a history lesson about the Native Americans who first lived along the river and left remnants of their pottery along its shores.

“The first person to actually own the land here was Tobias Knight, who was friends with Blackbeard the Pirate,” Bland adds. “Tobias worked for the government and was also the harbor master in Bath.”

The discussion goes on to include subsequent owners and uses of the islands such as a whale processing area and a Confederate fort during the Civil War and submarine lookouts during both World Wars.

“Bear Island and all the islands are constantly changing and moving. There are sand dunes as tall as 60 feet that show dynamic movement due to storm affects,” Bland said. “Every plant and animal here has adapted to the salt and salt spray, wind and temperatures.”

He also talked about many of the various animals, birds and insects you may see along the islands, such as the rare butterfly the Crystal Skipper, which can only be found in two locations in the world—Bear Island, which is part of the state park, and Bogue Banks. However I suggest being careful of doing so, because so many sunscreens contain alcohol. Alcohol can be very drying to the hair. Products that work best spray on and provide a protective shield to the hair. I recommend Glimmer Shine by Moroccanoil. It is infused with argon oil which provides complete protection. Another new product on the market is Sun Shield Conditioning Spray by Paul Mitchell.

Chlorine is a little different to pre-treat for because of the way it causes damage to the hair. Our hair has an positive electrical charge; the element chlorine has a negative charge. Because a positive attracts a negative, chlorine sticks to the hair like glue, leaving the hair feeling brittle when dry and slimy when wet. The best way to protect hair from chlorine damage is to wet your hair prior to swimming those laps. Wet hair is less absorbent than dry hair. Another way to prevent chlorine damage is to clarify the hair after swimming. I recommend Malibu for swimmers. It is gentle enough to use on a regular basis. Moroccanoil also makes a gentle,

yet effective clarifying shampoo.

After enjoying a day at the beach or swimming in a pool a deep masque is recommended. A good masque should replenish and rehydrate the hair. I recommend Moroccanoil restorative hair masque, It’s A 10 miracle masque and After Sun masque by Paul Mitchell. These treatments usually work best by rinsing out after a few minutes and not using heat to style afterwards. If you’re interested in a professional treatment, most salons offer affordable deep conditioning.

So the next time you gear up to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach and apply that sunscreen to your skin don’t forget about your hair.

A final stop is Huggins Island (Map #14), which is now part of part of Hammocks Beach. The island was farmed in the 1930s, Bland explains, because of its frost-free winters. It’s now a maritime preserve that attracts ospreys and bald eagles among many other creatures. There is also the site of an earthen Civil War fort—Fort Huggins—that Confederates built on the island to defend Bogue Inlet Swansboro.

Some trips will take you to Jones Island (Map #17) in the middle of the lower river. The federation bought most of the uninhabited island after it was threatened by development and gave it to the state to be added to Hammocks Beach. The park and the federation now have an environmental education center on the island, which has become a very active outdoor classroom where students and adults help restore marshes and oyster beds. This is my tenth year in photography! I started shooting surfers with a Sony Mavica that recored images to a floppy disk ( do they still exist?). Over time I really studied every aspect of photography and learned so much.

By June, every species that NC has to offer is readily available, both inshore and nearshore.

Regardless of the heat, all of these species must eat. But there are definitely some factors such as water temperature, tidal flow, available bait, weather systems and the moon phases that will affect the bite. Learning these patterns is key to a successful trip. An angler who can do this for every species can adapt to almost any conditions and still catch fish.

nearshore The nearshore water temperatures are holding steady around 70 to 75 degrees and everything is biting! Late May proved incredible, with plenty of 30 to 60-lb. Cobia, deckloads of big summer Flounder and Spanish Mackerel blitzes. This action will continue. Anglers can also expect to see record numbers of large Sea Bass along with plenty of Grouper, Amberjack, Mahi, Barracuda, King Mackerel and even a chance at a Sailfish! You’ll definitely want to load up on 2 to 3-oz. bucktails and Gulp Shrimp to target those nearshore flounder and large seabass. The hottest new bucktail on the market specifically designed to target nearshore flounder is the Bett’s Flounder Fanatic Bucktail. It’s the only bucktail on the market with ringshank bait keepers and a right angle hook which results in more hookups with fish and fewer snags to the bottom! I’ve tested these bucktails and the results are incredible. You can find them at your local tackle store and online. Light-lining citation Spanish will require 4 to 6" live menhaden or finger mullet which I prefer to fish on two No. 4 gold treble hooks rigged with 30-lb. solid Malin wire. If it’s a big King Mackerel or Mahi you prefer, you might want to step up your hook size to a No. 2 and your wire to a 40 to 60-lb. solid wire. I like to mix up the baits. I always bring along live menhaden, but it’s important to take the time to jig up some cigar minnows or greenies to add variety to your spread. Fathers Cycling Against Family Violence Join in a leisurely cycling event for men in our community to spend time with the children in their families on Father’s Day weekend in honor of the violence-free home they provide. The ride is from Emerald Isle Woods to Merchants Park and back.

There are plenty of stops along the way for free snacks, drinks and bike gear and trinkets. There will be vendors on hand for lunch at 11 a.m. as well as some special guests!

This event is a “mom-free zone” for dads, uncles, brothers, grandfathers, and other male family members to have some carefree time together. While the sponsored cause is serious, the morning will be relaxing, fun-filled and light-hearted.

There will be golf carts available to shuttle tired riders if children are unable to make the ride back. Some very young riders may tire out, and we want this to be as stress-free as possible on the adult participants. Moms will be welcome at the end of the ride.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the end of Emerald Isle Woods where participants will be given information on the ride path and events that will take place at 11 a.m. at Emerald Isle Woods. The ride will begin at 9 a.m. at Emerald Isle Woods and end at 11 a.m. back at Emerald Isle Woods.

Total ride mileage is approximately four miles—2 miles to Merchants Park and 2 miles back. There will be food vendors to provide lunch at 11 a.m. for participants to purchase and their moms, aunts, and grandmothers can join them there for lunch as well.

Adult male registrants will have the opportunity to gather pledges of $10 each from their male friends and family as an extra fundraiser. The registrant that turns in the most pledges will win a prize. Online pre-registration begins Mother’s Day and ends on the Wednesday before the ride. There will also be registration available on the day of the ride.

Pre-registration fees are $20 for an individual adult male, $40 for a family of four ($5 for each additional child in that family).Day of event registration fees are $30 for individual adult male, $50 for a family of four ($5 each additional child in that family).

inshore Our inshore water temperatures are hovering between 75 and 80 degrees, with cooler water in the deep channels and hot water on the shallow flats and bays. Anglers will find plenty of bait along the ICW and mainland creeks. These creeks are full of newly hatched mullet minnows, shrimp, and peanut pogies that will eventually make their way toward the open waters.

All of this bait will gain the interest of a variety of popular sportfish including flounder, redfish, bluefish, trout, black drum, sheephead, and more! Redfishing will be great this month. To quickly cover ground, it’s best to work top water baits

along marsh shores during the higher part of a tide. If you’re fishing around a lot of shell, using a spinner bait is a great way to avoid hang-ups and draw in strikes. In all situations though, a jighead tipped with a gulp bait is my go-to bait because every species will attack it. The key, regardless of which bait you’re working, is to slow down and pay attention to the water.

Look for skittish baits, puffs of mud on the bottom in the distance and headwater off schooling redfish. Keep in mind the limit is still one redfish per day per angler and the size limit is 18 to 27". Flounder fishing has been great so far this spring and should only get better through summer. I really like fishing a Berkley Gulp shrimp or Pogie on a ¼ to 1-oz. bucktail or jig head around deep water structures like bridge and dock pylons for big flounder. If

you find yourself getting a lot of “bite offs” on your scented baits, switch over to a live finger mullet or mud minnow fished on a Carolina rig to avoid losing costly lures.

Flounder will usually stage up to feed on the falling tide where small creeks drain into larger creeks or channels as well as on major depth changes in the bottom of a creek channel. Drifting the inlets is very effective this month as summer Flounder are migrating in from the ocean. Other species that offer plenty of fun this month are Black Drum and Sheephead. These two species really prefer shrimp and crabs.

I like to use a 1/0 owner short shank, wide gap hook for the sheepshead and a No. 1 circle hook for the black drum. Both species can be found around structures including bridges and dock pylons, oyster beds, rock jetties and rock walls.

Modern BCs are still evolving to meet the needs of the diver. Newer models have weight pockets for putting weights in the BC, removing the need for a weight belt. Dump valves are located at the rear of the BC and on the shoulders of the BC and it is only a matter of repositioning the body to get one of the dump valves to the highest point to get the air out of the BC. SeaQuest, a dive equipment manufacturer, introduced the i3 to inflate and deflate the BC a couple of years ago. Instead of being mounted on the shoulder like the standard auto inflator hose, the i3 is located on the left pocket, close to the diver’s hand. The i3 uses a single lever to inflate and deflate the BC by opening the shoulder and rear dump at the same time. Since both are opened, divers don’t need to alter their position to release air.

As technical divers and wannabe technical divers grow in number, the BCs that are used need to have additional lift because of the weight of the multiple tanks. To accommodate them, the diver assembles the BC from a wing and a backplate. The wing is the U-shaped portion of the BC that holds

the air. The backplate is the part that rests on the diver’s back and is usually made out of stainless steel or aluminum.

The wing is bolted to the backplate. As the diver’s need for lift is increased or decreased, the wing can be exchanged for different sizes. When a diver is fully inflated on the surface, the diver will float face down. It takes some practice for a diver to get use to using a wing and a backplate so they can maintain proper balance in the water.

Divers from 1975 to 1982 used the horse collar BC. In 1981, the design of the BC was completely changed. No longer a device that was slipped over the head, it was redesigned as a jacket. The jacket BCs originally had belts that kept them in place, but the later models replaced the belts with cummerbunds that connected with Velcro. Pockets were put on both sides of the jacket to give divers plenty of storage space. Additional overpressurization valves, up to three, were added. These valves were also designed so the diver could manually release air from the BC by pulling on a dump cord.

Some models had chest straps that kept the jacket from opening during full inflation. D-rings were added to give the divers more places to attach gear. The early models had air pockets that ran up and down the chest, but the newer models have quick disconnect clips and adjustable straps on the chest to allow easy exit and to give the best possible fit. CO2 cartridges were still on the early models, even though the jackets had auto inflators, but were removed from the models around 1990. The backpack was integrated into the jacket and as a
