arolinas Kiwanians, we are in the fourth quarter of the 2020-2021 Kiwanis year and game. Less than 90 days remain to achieve goals for our district and clubs. Team Kiwanis,, let’s continue to Play Kiwanis Hard, Play Smart, and Play Together. Thanks to vaccinations, the professional actions of public health officials, and prudent policies set by Kiwanis and its clubs, we are moving past the Covid- 19 pandemic. Thank you to every Carolinas club and member for loyalty to Kiwanis,

and move to the 2021-2022 Carolinas year with its theme of “Engage and Share the Mission.” On Friday, August 27, Governor-Elect Joe Crostic will host a capstone experience for incoming lieutenant governors. We will hold our annual district board meeting. The Carolinas District Foundation also will hold its annual board meeting. Everyone will be on their own Friday evening to enjoy the great restaurants and entertainment in downtown Greenville.

To comply with Kiwanis Covid-19 guidelines and to promote safety, we are limiting attendance to only 160 Kiwanians and guests. Registration is only $85, a bargain. Please join us in Greenville. It will great to get the team together in person. To register, please visit www. carolinakiwanis.org. It has been a privilege to serve as your governor this year, the first year of the second century of Carolinas Kiwanis. Thank you all for your encouragement and hard work. The best is yet to come.

NOTE FROM THE GOVERNOR our mission, and our creative service to children and youth in your communities. Now more than ever, #KidsNeedKiwanis #CommunitiesNeedKiwanis and #KiwanisNeedsKiwanians. #KiwanisNeedsKiwanians.

Toward a “new normal,” the Carolinas returns to in-person gatherings. On August 27-28, 27-28, we are holding our Carolinas District Education and Leadership Conference (CDK ELC) in Greenville, SC at the downtown Hyatt Regency Greenville.. You may recall we Greenville met there for DCON in 2019. They gave us great hospitality, and we expect the same this year. Our theme for CDK ELC will be “Get Back in The Game.” It makes for a good transition as we complete this year

On Saturday, August 28, we will convene from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. We will present three keynote speakers and four educational forums. The forums will offer ideas to strengthen your club’s membership, service, and fundraising. We will have a luncheon with featured speaker and presentations. Kiwanis International Trustee Chuck Fletcher, our 2021-22 counselor, will retire our officers and install our new officers. Awards and recognitions will be presented throughout the day. Carolinas Kiwanis fellowship! Due to Covid-19, we will not have an in-person house of delegates. We will hold virtual elections just as we did last August.

Every day, I have posted to the Carolinas District’s Facebook page a Kiwanis thought of the day and an inspirational quote of the day. My quote for this article comes from the movie, Caddy Shack. Ty Webb (played by Chevy Chase) says, “there is a force in the universe that makes things happen, and all you have to do is get in touch with it. Stop thinking. Let things happen. And be the ball.” Carolinas Kiwanians, Kiwanis is the force that makes things happen. Be the ball!

Yours in Kiwanis Service,

Chris CAROLINA KIWANIAN |

MEMBERSHIP

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND ENGAGEMENT IS POSSIBLE DURING THE PANDEMIC With approximately 90 days remaining in this Kiwanis year, it’s time to spark the member ember. The future is now! How clubs address membership topics such as retention, engagement, and membership growth today will determine how clubs are able to address the needs of children in the future. For many clubs, the pandemic has ceased membership growth and, in some cases, membership engagement. However, a number of clubs in the Carolinas District have kept the ember burning and have reached out to members to ensure they are still in game. Many of those clubs are also experiencing membership growth between 10% - 166%. Your club can, too! Membership growth is absolutely possible in the pandemic. The method to growing your club is determined by your club leadership. The possibilities are endless. Here are a few tips:

-Form a Membership Committee. - Contact each member of your club to get them back in the game. - Contact members by phone, send a handwritten note or consider virtual options. - Engage members to identify new members sooner rather than later. - Participate in CDK Incentives and Contests. - Invite a guest to a club meeting, fundraiser, or social event. - Focus on a specific group such as young professionals, professions such as educators, retirees, empty nesters, new comings to your community, etc. - Start a guest book at meetings and use it invite guests to return in the future. - Invite people who have a passion for service or who serve children professionally. - Consider Corporate membership.

When promoting Kiwanis, get every member involved and on the same page. There is no better time to invite than now. Studies show that Americans are lonelier than ever. People need to feel connected. Kiwanis is a great place to get connected while making a difference. Invite someone to Kiwanis TODAY who can help change a child’s trajectory. It takes a village! Membership in Kiwanis is the number one thing Kiwanians need to do to better serve the needs of children. Let’s go! Let’s serve, lead, and grow together today!

MARY WINFREE FOR GOVERNOR-ELECT Mary Winfree was raised in Pembroke, NC, a small town in Robeson County, by two selfless parents who taught her to serve others. Mary studied Accounting at Robeson Community College and Kings College before becoming a military spouse. Mary is a Partner and Vice President of Business Development in The Staffing Alliance, a full-service staffing company, based in Lumberton, NC with business partners in North and South Carolina. She is the proud mom of 3 intelligent, beautiful daughters and an innovative, entrepreneurial son; and Mimi to 8 grandchildren who are even smarter, cuter, and more talented than her own children. Mary became a member of Kiwanis of Robeson – Lumberton in April 2010. She joined the club’s board six months later and has served in leadership since 2011 in addition to positions such as Programs Chair, Fundraising Chairperson, Service Leadership Program Chairperson and advisor to Circle K at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Lumberton High School Key Club. She has assisted with the club’s social events, lead numerous service projects, and was instrumental in forming a Past Presidents Council in 2019. Mary was named Kiwanian of the Year in 2012. Mary served as the club’s first female President in 2013-2014, the year the club celebrated its 90th Anniversary, and a second term in 2019-2020. Mary served two consecutive terms as Lt. Governor of Division 26 during which she was recognized as an Outstanding Lt. Governor and as a Formula Role Model for membership growth. Mary served one term as Region 5 Trustee of the Carolinas District and was a member of the Carolinas District Disaster Relief Committee. Currently, Mary serves as Immediate Past President of Kiwanis Club of Robeson-Lumberton and as the Carolinas District of Kiwanis Membership Development Chairperson. She is a member of the Past Presidents Council and the club’s Membership Committee. Following Hurricane Florence, Mary led the collaborative effort of five Carolinas District Kiwanis clubs, various Key Clubs and UNCP Circle K, as well as clubs in the New York District, and in Virginia to provide disaster relief in Robeson County. In addition to funds received from the Kiwanis International Children’s Fund and the Carolinas District Kiwanis Foundation for Disaster Relief, the clubs raised approximately $50k and collected donations of disaster relief items that were distributed in partnership with the Public Schools of Robeson County, the Department of Social Services, and Communities in Schools. The event gained Kiwanis International recognition and was featured in Kiwanis Children’s Fund fundraising efforts. Mary received the 2019 Governor’s Special Commendation Award for her leadership in the project. During Mary’s term as Region 5 Trustee, she planned and organized two Kiwanis One Day events at Lake Waccamaw Boy and Girls Home. One of which involved redecorating the Kiwanis Cottage. Her leadership resulted in the collective efforts of clubs across the region and participation of 105 Kiwanis volunteers at the Kiwanis One Day of service. As District Membership Development Chairperson, she has led educational webinars and was featured on Kiwanis International’s Facebook Live Program Lunch With A Leader. In addition to Kiwanis service, Mary has served on the Robeson United Way Board of Directors, Lumberton Chamber of Commerce Board, and Robeson Community College Foundation Board of Directors, as well as on several committees at the University of North Carolinas at Pembroke and Southeastern Regional Medical Center. She served as Ombudsman to the USS Toledo (submarine, United States Navy) and was a Girl Scout Leader, Board Secretary of the Norman, Oklahoma Indian Education Committee and Parent Teacher Association Vice President at Pembroke Elementary School, Pembroke, NC. Mary Winfree resides in Lumberton, NC. Mary enjoys weekends at the coast, do-it-yourself projects, attending sporting events, listening to live music, family gatherings, and promoting Kiwanis.

RISK MANAGEMENT FAQ’S by Doug Day, Risk Management Coordinator

Waivers KI’s policies have not changed from the beginning of the pandemic. They will not dictate to the clubs that the waiver is required but it is strongly recommended. The waiver adds a legal protection to the clubs by disclosing the potential risks to anyone attending a meeting or an event. Signing the waiver exempts the club from potential liability. The waiver was recommended because, effective November 1. 2020, coverage for communicable diseases was excluded under the KI General Liability policy. As more and more states and local government agencies relax the mask and social distancing requirements, the waiver becomes less of a legal necessity. As always, it is a club decision as to whether to require a waiver or not. Please follow state and local guidelines. If a waiver is required by a club to attend and/or work at an event and there are minors, is a parent or guardian’s signature required? No. However, it is strongly recommended. (Minors do not have the same legal rights as adults. Without the waiver being signed by an adult or guardian, the waiver may be invalid.) Kiwanis recommends that the waivers be saved at least until the statute of limitations for the state expires, but you might want to keep them a few years longer. 16

Team Sponsorship

Any time Kiwanis International is associated with a team there is the potential for liability. They have not seen a claim related to team sponsorship, but that does not mean that it could not happen. The potential for liability is related to the extent of Kiwanis involvement. If it is purely financial or if a Kiwanis member is the coach, the liability to Kiwanis itself is minimal. The more involvement by the Kiwanis club indicates the potential for liability. Another question is whether a player on a sponsored team is considered a volunteer. Typically, no. If the player is a participant only on a sponsored team they would not be considered a volunteer. However, if the volunteer is in an event that is sponsored by Kiwanis, then the player may be considered a true volunteer (opinion). Anyone can be sued or included on a lawsuit. The more the player participates in a Kiwanis sponsored event, the more they are considered a volunteer and the greater the chances of Kiwanis being legally liable. Venue/Athletic Field Sponsorship Kiwanis has been included in lawsuit where our only involvement in the venue was financial. Kiwanis was not involved in the operation nor maintenance of the operation. However. because Kiwanis was associated with the venue it was named in the lawsuit. This is an example of a situation where the venue owner provides Kiwanis with a Hold Harmless Agreement and provides the club with a certificate of insurance naming the club and Kiwanis International as Additional Insured on the insurance policy. The forms can be found at Kiwanis.org/ liability.

YOUNG CHILDREN Your International Young Children Committee was pleased to bring you four outstanding programs for the recent virtual Leadership and Education Conference. The focus was on Education (Literacy), Safety and Nutrition . Each program left you with a project or projects that you could use for your own club projects . We hope you were able to access them while attending the conference or in follow up days that are available. If not, we will feature them individually in the project space of the upcoming newsletters that are published monthly. Never has there been a more important time to reach out to our young children. Given the pandemic (better but still with us) many of our young children have been in great need of care (child abuse, food shortage, school only virtually or not at all and medical care). Kiwanians are the best advocates for young children. We are their best volunteers for helping them “Learn, Laugh, Love and Play.” Thank You for all you do and do so very well for our young children .

DISTRICT SERVICE INITIATIVE: Adopt-A-School #KidsNeedKiwains #CommunitiesNeedKiwanis #SchoolsNeedKiwanis The 2020-2021 Kiwanis year is an incredibly challenging time for our schools. Covid-19 has severely impacted society, particularly education. Schools are trying to balance the need for in person education with public health and safety for all. Some are meeting in person, remotely, or with some hybrid method. In many areas, Kiwanis clubs that have been active partners for years are unable to be on campus. Despite restrictions, schools need all the help and support they can get.

A Kiwanis Service Leadership Program for Adults with Disabilities The Carolinas District Aktion Club Committee thanks you for the support your club has given our Aktion Clubs in the past. As you are aware, this has been a challenging year for all of us, but we are pleased to report that many of our Aktion Clubs are active and strong thanks to their Kiwanis Advisors. We normally have a three-day Carolinas District Aktion Club Convention in September at Camp Walter Johnson in Denton, NC. This year, in September, we are having a two-day (2 hours each day) Zoom Convention which we think is going to be very exciting for our members and an enjoyable experience for all. We will be having our Speech, Talent and Poster Contests along with the “Club Single Service Award” and “Club Recognition Awards”. We are expecting to have over 200 participants from 34 clubs on Zoom and will be giving out door prizes each day. The winners of the contests and awards will be receiving ribbons and medals. We would like to purchase t-shirts for all the participants as a “Thank You” for attending and staying so strong during the pandemic to distribute at the end of the convention. Because of your generosity in the past, we are reaching out to your Kiwanis Club to donate funds for our door prizes, ribbons/medals and T-shirts. If you could find it in your hearts to send $40, $60, $80 or even $100, we would so appreciate it. Of course, we will be thanking all of our Club Sponsors during the Convention. Please send your donations by August 15, to Carolinas District Aktion Club Administrator Ronald C Kuebler, PO Box 336, Hendersonville, NC 28793. Click here for a copy of our “Poster” for our twoday Zoom meeting, and join us for this fun-filled two day conference. Sincerely, Ronald C Kuebler Carolinas District Aktion Club Admnistrator. 18

Grants/Contributions Your club’s gift matters. The Foundation is currently exploring new ways to assist District programs. This takes money. If there are areas where you believe the Foundation can be of greater service please email President Gary Cooper (coopdbcoop@nc.rr.com) or Secretary/Treasurer Stan Perry (perry8@clemson.edu) and let us know. Be an advocate for your Foundation. The phrase on the back of the Carl B. Hyatt medallion, which was coined by PDG Stan Perry during the 1997-1998 year, sums up why we do what we do: “…because every child deserves a hero. “

Carolinas Key Club pushed forward during a very difficult 20-21 school year. About 45% of our Key Clubs did not meet in person or virtually for the entire school year. Because of this challenge, the 2122 school year will be one that will require patience as we have many new advisors and officers that are starting without previous experience to rely on. In addition, most advisors will not know amended school policies related to meetings and events until they return in August; this may mean a continued restriction on returning to Key Club normalcy. Even during a slow year when some of our clubs did meet, district officers excelled. We are proud to again have 4 executive officers achieve distinguished status, and 5 Lt. Governors were distinguished as well. Here is a breakdown of our 20-21 award winners: Julia Kasper, Distinguished District Editor; Jackson White, Distinguished District Secretary; Jake Kornegay, Distinguished District Treasurer; Raghav Chari, Distinguished District Governor. Annie Luong, Pranay Koneru, Ore Falaki, Aasha Paredes, and Yadira Paz-Martinez, all distinguished Lt. Governors; WEST FORSYTH HIGH SCHOOL, Distinguished DIAMOND level Club, and both CORINTH HOLDERS HIGH SCHOOL

and SILVER BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL were recognized as distinguished clubs. Both WEST FORSYTH HIGH SCHOOL and CORINTH HOLDERS HIGH SCHOOL received first place awards for SINGLE SERVICE in their club size classification. In April Carolinas Key Club held a one day virtual leadership conference in lieu of an in-person convention. A new slate of executive leadership, selected by the board of directors, was presented to club membership. In addition, Lt. Governors for the new year have now been trained and are serving in their divisions. Most Lt. Governors are serving more than one division until membership and club activity increases. Unlike some parts of our Kiwanis family, Key Clubs are highly impacted by school board and principal mandated policies. It is for this reason that we are still unsure of when the organization will be back to preCOVID strength. Nevertheless, I am sure our clubs will do the best they can, as quickly as possible, to serve the many needs of those less fortunate in their communities. J. Scott Johnson, Administrator Carolinas District Key Club

Carolinas CKI is hosting a fundraiser to support their leadership fund and have designed these signs to help promote the Kiwanis Brand during your fundraisers, service projects or even meetings. One sign is $12, two or more are $10 each. Click here to order signs for your club. Signs will be available for pick up at the Carolinas Kiwanis Convention in Greenville in August. If you are not attending the convention, we recommend asking your Lt. Governor or another club close to you to pick up the signs. If you need the signs shipped, they can be shipped. However, shipping is a separate charge and will be confirmed once your order is in and we are able to calculate shipping and handling. Questions about the signs?
