Editor’s Letter Dear Readers,

T

he year 2013, in all probability, will be about utility vehicles, especially the sports utility vehicle. We expect that the much awaited Ford EcoSport will be launched in the first half of the calendar year, followed by Maruti XA Alpha. The iconic Jeep from the Chrysler stable will be launched at end of the 2013. Jeep is a name that is synonymous with off-road vehicles and is quite popular in India. Mahindra & Mahindra which was set up as a steel trading company in 1955 incidentally expanded into manufacturing general-purpose utility vehicles, starting with assembly under licence of the iconic Willys Jeep in India. Jeep is not an unfamiliar word in India. Fiat S.p.A, which has a major shareholding in Chrysler, will be importing the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler into India. These vehicles may not come in cheap as they would be brought into India through the CBU route. The cover report is on Chrysler’s plans to enter India with the Jeep brand. While Jeep has made known its intention to launch its products, a Chinese company Great Wall Motor Company Limited (GWM) is exploring the Indian market. GWM is China’s leading SUV and pickup manufacturer and a privately owned enterprise. A team from GWM was in New Delhi in the month of December 2012 exploring avenues to enter the Indian market. The company’s products range includes SUVs, passenger cars and pick-ups. The SUVs are branded as Haval, the sedans as Great Wall and the pick ups as Wingle. We have also extensively covered the several car races, rallies and vintage and classic shows that were held in the month of December 2012. Our travel contributor Jyoti Balani has written extensively. She has also written about her recent visit to Ireland, a country which she found magical and amazing. Apart from these different news, we have all the regular write ups on cuisine, gadgets and lifestyle. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

contents 24. Suzuki M800 Intruder The bike attracts a lot of attention on the roads, so please do not ever get carried away thinking the world is staring at a John Abraham speeding by. On the looks front, the Suzuki Intruder M800 gets ten out of ten. It’s almost ditto looking like the 1800cc machine. It’s sporty to look at and it merely stands out with all the glittering chrome all around it.

Not everyone is qualified to ride an Enfield motorcycle. A few decades back, when boys were scurrying to buy motorcycles as light as a bicycle, the Enfield company separated the men from the boys.

When I left for Ireland, I was entirely clueless about the excitement in store for me. The first thing I realised after reaching there was that the Irish are a very friendly and hospitable people. Ireland was full of pleasant surprises.

Tutu’s fine tunes

SUV clones are much in demand R.K. Dhawan (Tutu)

H

as the appetite among Indians consumers for sports utility vehicles suddenly increased? Yes, if one were to consider the increased demand for multi utility vehicles. These vehicles can be more appropriately called clones of Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV). The demand for the blue blooded SUVs is almost non-existent in the country because hardly anyone does any cross country driving. Only a very negligible fraction among the Indians would actually be doing cross country driving in their cars which would be involving hard core off-road driving. People now want a vehicle which looks impressive, is higher than a sedan and has a good road presence, besides offering a lot of comfort within the cabin. A lot of elderly people opt for cars where the seats are a bit higher and they do not have to slouch while seated, thereby not straining their knees. The recent story of SUV clones began with the Maruti Gypsy and the Tata Sierra. The latter bombed in the market. As for the Gypsy, it did not offer any comfort at all, except for the front two occupants. The Gypsy was used in rallying. The armed forces used the vehicles with the pinch of salt. It never became a runaway hit like the good old Willys Jeep. It took them a lot of time to accept the Gypsy as part of their transport fleet. The Tatas then came out with the Safari which did okay in the Indian market. But it was the Scorpio from Mahindra which

6 / Car N Style / January 2013

defined the SUV market in India. It was an SUV clone, to be more precise. But the Scorpio gave an option of a four by four, thereby making it a thoroughbred SUV. But the Scorpio 4X4 vehicles were far too limited in demand and it took the company a bit of time to deliver the vehicle to the customers. Ideally, an SUV is a vehicle with a 4x4 feature and a high-low combination of Chrysler Jeep

gears. These features are a must for the vehicle to be termed an SUV. These features also come very handy when the vehicle is driven on bad surfaces like slushy or frozen grounds where traction is required in all four wheels to maintain the vehicle’s stability. Similarly, when the vehicle is driven off-road, it requires high level of torque to pull it out of some tough terrains. Initially, all the Willy jeeps that were available in India had a 4X4 as well as high-low gears. When the Mahindras started making these jeeps in India, they became more practical and gave an option of a 4X2. If the Scorpio was a game changer in the SUV markets here, so is the Renault Duster

which is made on a monocoque frame. Around 95pc of the SUVs in India are based on ladder-on-frame chassis. The result is that the vehicle is higher and heavier. The monocoque frame ensures that the vehicle is much lighter and gives you better fuel average. Now if one were to compare the Tata Safari and the Renault Duster you will see the difference. The latter is far lighter than the former and that has its own set of advantages. When the vehicle is light, it does not require a monstrous engine and the fuel average is far better. The Duster, because of its unique design is easy to drive, and with its close ratio gear, the vehicle is powerful too. Now we have to see how Ford fares with its EcoSport. It is going to be a 1 litre petrol engine. The vehicle will also have a diesel option. The point I am making is that the SUV clones are getting more popular than the real SUVs. That seems to be the trend. I recall the time when the Maruti Gypsy came out with 4X4 feature and those who bought it seldom used it and when they wanted to use it, the mechanism used to get jammed. Thus, if one were to buy a vehicle with a 4X4 option and never really used it for the purpose it was built for, it could make no real sense. I can now foresee a surge in demand for this kind of vehicles. The year 2013 will see a lot of such SUVs from Nissan, Maruti, Chrysler Jeep etc. The Indian consumer can look forward to some very exciting times!

Fiat Panda Monster Truck: when reality outstrips fantasy

Curve, the new addition to ‘Steelbird Helmets’

The new Fiat Panda never fails to surprise. It proves exceptional just when we need it, whether we want a large luggage compartment, agility for coping with traffic or four-wheel drive for arriving where others fear to tread. As the advertising slogan that accompanies the commercial launch of the model has it: ‘New Panda, extremely Panda.’

Steelbird Helmets has come out with Steelbird Curve, a new range of helmets from the company. Rather than the typical round shaped helmet, the new helmet is an oval shaped Curve that fits the head of the rider or the pillion rider perfectly. The unisex product Curve is designed to appeal to the youth who favour trendy products. The Curve comes with ventilated designed strips on the back which allows air flow thereby ensuring that the user does not feel any suffocation. A BSI certified product, the Curve is fitted with a double visor for day and night riding comfort. The polycarbonate anti-scratch coated visor ensures crystal clear vision. The interiors of curve are replaceable and washable; in fact the cheek pad can also be replaced very easily. Aesthetically cut radium stickers on the helmet enhance the safety factor during night riding. The Curve also comes with one special anti-theft ring, wherein one can lock the helmet with a bike or scooter without any additional locks. The helmet is available in four colours ---- metallic red, metallic blue, metallic gray and glossy yellow.

If the Fiat city-car, thanks to the latest digital technology employed by animated films, ‘transformed’ first into a nippy scooter and then a spacious light cargo aircraft in the first commercials, now, to demonstrate the off-road performance of the new Panda 4×4, Fiat has chosen to adopt set-design techniques from the cinema together with automotive tuning. And that’s how the Panda Monster Truck was created, a prototype built by Fiat in collaboration with Mercurio Cinematografica, set designer Andrea Faini and the Fabio Gementi Workshop.

Ertiga CNG by early 2013

Avishek Banerjee Maruti Suzuki, which has created a jackpot of sorts in the MPV segment with the Ertiga, is going the extra mile by coming up with its CNG variant by the beginning of next year. A vendor source supplying a critical component for the aforementioned vehicle (both petrol and diesel versions) has revealed that it is expecting orders for the CNG version by March-April-13. As the CNG technology would be factory-fitted, it will be atleast 30,000-35,000 pricier than the petrol version. However, when the company spokesperson was contacted, nothing could be confirmed. “As a company policy, we do not talk about our future product plans,” the company spokesperson replied in an emailed statement. Another source close to the development has said that the CNG variant of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga would be equipped with its in-house developed technology i.e. ‘intelligent-Gas Port Injection’ or i-GPI which is already employed on five popular models. A senior Maruti Suzuki official had earlier told Car N Style, “We are very keen to bring contemporary CNG technology to the Indian customer. We are confident customers would value our i-GPI technology that is safe, reliable, clean, responsive and environment friendly. Adapting the CNG technology in our vehicles is another step to keep low cost of ownership for our customers.”

Vikrampati Singhania Deputy Managing Director, JK Tyre and Industries Objective: It’s a combination of a lot of things. It’s a great test track for all the tyres that we produce. The tyres tested here ultimately are meant for vehicle owners. We also intend to promote motorsports talent in India. It also adds to the brand value. Any tone down of Motorsports activities because of recession? Not Really. Motorsports activities are part of life. Businesses go up and down in every cycle. This is a long term-commitment towards promoting motorsports. Infact, we would like to take it on a global scale. On Indian driver winning an F1GP: Any sports require someone to start at a young age. In other countries, it happens so. An F1 driver from Brazil or Europe has been

practicising for years now. It’s just the infrastructure that helps breed talent in that country. We have started producing drivers through karting. So there are drivers who are graduating to global arenas. It’s about the number of people in any sports and backing them up with sponsorships and other financial commitments. Indian drivers are now performing well. They are competing at the F3 and F2 level. It’s a matter of one or two steps to attain the stature of a world-class driver by an Indian.

On its future course of action: We are looking at a different kind of sport in addition to the ones we are already sponsoring.

On the infrastructural bottlenecks in India: At the end of the day, it’s about the availability of land. We can only talk to the concerned parties and encourage them to build many more circuits. We intend to hold more races to enhance the talent in this country.

Vision for the company: To take Indian drivers on the global motorsports map. We would also like to have them figured in different categories of motorsports. We want to sharpen the focus and enhance the skills of the Indian drivers and take them to the next level.

Arun Mammen Managing Director, MRF Objective: Since we are in the tyre business, we build hi-performance tyres. It showcases our tyre technology and capabilities. That is the primary objective. In addition to that, such activities also help promoting motorsports in the country. As motorsports in India is pretty young, a lot more can be done to nurture the drivers. On the probability of churning out an F1 champion in India: Such a possibility cannot be ruled out in the long term. Provided he has the access to world-class cars which we are trying to bring into the country. It’s also important to give the right equipment (next-gen cars) to Indian drivers so that they can deliver. But in the

12 / Car N Style / January 2013

short term, I don’t see that happening. A car like Formula 2000 is an F3 car and gives you the state-of-the art technology in single-seater racing. And this is also great tool for young Indian drivers. On challenges and hurdles: Motorsports is not comparable to any other sports like cricket. It’s an expensive sport. An aspirant need to get support from various automobile companies to get into such activities. That will ultimately help in spreading the racing fraternity in this country. On taking company-sponsored rallies on a global scale: In the next year, we

should be organising such rallies in other countries. We are already in talks with many track centres which are located overseas. Vision for MRF: As we are the pioneers in motorsports, we have a long way to go. Being in this space for more than 25 years, we intend to be the best in what we are doing.

John Chacko MD and President, VW Group India Objective: Our intention is to promote the motorsport talent in this country and also emotionalise our brand name. Motorsport is classically one of the ways to do it. On replicating the global success of Polo Cup in India: VW Polo Cup has been a big success in India. We have been working at it for three years. From time to time, we got better. We are also getting much closer to what we are showing to the public on the road so that we have a very good synergy effect between motorsports in India and the series of production in this country. On balancing emission and power in race cars: If you look at the Polo cars that we are running at our races, they are

very hi-tech. The TSI technology that is employed in the engines is one of the most environment-friendly ones in the world. We are also emotionalising the fact that we have the most efficient engines. I don’t think we are contradicting anything. Yes, the cars are faster but not very highpolluting. With the gearbox that is fitted on the Polos, I think it’s a perfect way to get into high-tech solutions on to the road. Current Challenges: Getting more spectators for this sport. On promoting Ducati for bike championships in India: That is very much on the horizon Vision: We will be carrying on with our

motorsports activities in India. This is because we still think that as far as the emotions are concerned, this is the place to activate them.

Mohan P.N. Chairman & Managing Director, Sidvin Core-Tech (I) Pvt. Ltd. Objective: Being in the motorsports for 25 years, I am very passionate about it. I have been a co-driver for many years for bikes and cars. I have also been a part of this federation as a national safety officer. Motorsports has always been my passion. So as my company associates with these activities, we are promoting a lot of talent in this country. We got into this 5 years back and were the first team to take Indian drivers to world rally championship. Thereafter, we brought in Sidvin Festival of Speed in 2009. After a gap of 15 years, we brought in Asia Road Racing in India. We have also sponsored the National Motorcycle Racing Championship. We had also won the MRF Championship last year. On making this sport a wee bit affordable: We are trying to create

www.carnstyle.com

platforms for different levels. So we are bringing the entry barriers much lower. We are offering affordable options for aspirants. On plugging the gaps: As manufactures like VW are coming in, it’s a massive boost for various motorsport drivers in this country. We are also working on entrylevel Polo Cup. On giving chance to female drivers: We are already having a handful of female drivers like Alice Powell. We do expect some Indians catching up. On churning out an F1 champion: 5 years from now, it is possible to have alteast an Indian F1 driver figured in the top 10 rankings. By that time, we will have more

faster car and a huge spectator turnout I am sure there are a lot of young kids who are quick and doing well in karting. Vision: Going forward, we are going to make sure that the Festival of Speed is going to be very aspirational. We would like to create a platform where people would like to watch such events.

Suzuki M800 Intruder When the world stops and stares at you… Report: P.Tharyan & Photography: Mohd. Nasir There are a few things that need to be noted before one climbs on to a superbike. One, you have to tell yourself that these bikes are heavy and need to be handled carefully. Two, you have got to shed any pretence, however remote, that you look like Shah Rukh Khan. Rather, be yourself and ride the bike carefully. The average roads in India are not suited for superbikes, the way it is not suited for supercars. But a crumbling infrastructure should not deprive you of your desire to ride a bike that may be an M800 but looks and feels almost like its big bro the Intruder 1800. The bike attracts a lot of attention on the roads, so please do not ever get carried away thinking the world is staring at a John Abraham speeding by. They are merely admiring the motorcycle and there are a zillion reasons to admire this bike. This bike was launched almost a year back, but some things beautiful need to be reviewed very often so that they do not slip out of your memory.

LOOKS & FEEL On the looks front, the Suzuki Intruder M800 gets ten out of ten. It’s almost ditto looking like the 1800cc machine. It’s sporty to look at and it merely stands out with all the glittering chrome all around it. On the right side, it gets accentuated by the two massive exhausts that look imposing the moment it exits the powerful V-twin 805cc engine. It’s low enough for an average height rider to feel comfortable even when the bike is stationary. Short legs are no major impediment to this handsome looking cruiser. The seats are broad and comfortable and equally fitting for a discerning pillion rider. With no grab handles for the pillion rider, this bike is meant for a pair in love…gay or otherwise! The moment you are seated on the bike, you get a heady feeling that it’s meant for you and you alone. It’s no ordinary 805cc machine. It’s different than what you perceive….it is actually big in size. Bigger than what you would have imagined an 805cc machine should be. It’s got a smart instrument cluster and LED taillights with handle bars that give the rider the perfect stance. On the looks and feel front, the Intruder M800 is an outright winner.

POWER & PERFORMANCE Before we come to the power and ride capabilities of the M800, let’s discuss the size and shape of the rider. This bike is not meant for every Tom, Dick and Harry. You have got to have muscles both on your legs and your hands to handle this gentle beast. For instance, if you have to push the stationary bike back while on it, your calf muscles need to be strong as steel. Similarly, when you have got to turn the bike at a slow speed, it requires lot of strength in your arms to do so. In short, you have got to be strong to ride this bike, besides having loads of money too to buy it. The M800 is powered by an 805cc, liquid-cooled, 45 degree V-twin engine that produces a maximum power of 52bhp at 6000rpm and a torque of 68.38Nm at 4000rpm. That may not sound very impressive but considering the weight of the bike, this power is more than adequate to propel the bike from a stationary point to the 100km per hour stage in just a few seconds. Because of its mammoth size, the bike does have a large turning radius as compared to smaller bikes in the 200cc to 250cc category. Let’s not forget, this is a cruiser and it’s not meant to take you shopping to the local market. It is meant for the highway and long drives with loads of adrenalin.

“That’s a Harley,” said someone on a bike, as we stopped at the traffic light. Is that a compliment? In a way, yes! In a country where there are only small bikes and the big bikes are ‘Harleys’, it’s a compliment to be branded as a Harley. But we were riding the Suzuki Intruder M800 that may look as smart as a Harley but sounded far from it. The sound from the engine is extremely tamed. But that does not mean it’s flat and boring. It’s simply not aggressive like a big bike should sound. The bike comes with a telescopic, coil spring, oil damped suspension in the front and a link type, coil spring, oil damped suspension at the rear. It’s taut and takes the pot holes and rough roads with some ease. Continuous bad patches on the road can give you the aches at the shoulder level. The riding position is comfortable with your feet slightly raised and stretched. This posture is comfortable during long distance riding. While the front has disc brakes, the rear comes with drum brakes. The effectiveness of the disc brakes is clearly felt the moment you tug at the hand brake of the bike. It’s very clear that this motorcycle would appeal to a hard core biker, and that too, a wealthy one. For the 10 lakh odd it would cost on road Delhi, the Suzuki Intruder M800 is a perfect buy. Especially when then the world stops and stares at you!

Snapshot Review Not everyone is qualified to ride an Enfield motorcycle. A few decades back, when boys were scurrying to buy motorcycles as light as a bicycle, the Enfield company separated the men from the boys. (The company was then owned by Madras Motors until Eicher took over the company in the 1990s.) The men went ahead and bought the Enfield Bullet motorcycles. The boys went ahead and continued sipping Campa Cola (Coke had been banned in India at that time). I am talking about the early 1980s. I was then in my second year of college. The present MD and CEO of Eicher (Royal Enfield is part of the Eicher group) Siddhartha Lal would then have been around 10 years old. The Bullet was then a mean machine.

Everything about the bike was different. The gearshift lever and the kick lever were on the right. There was an additional tiny lever that got the gear into the neutral position the moment you tapped it with your foot. On the left side was the brake pedal. Those were the days of the carburetor and fuel injection was an unheard of technology. There was no electric start too. The best part was the kick. It was a brute of a mechanism. It used to ‘kick’ you back! Yes, two out of five times when you attempted to kick start the Bullet motorcycle, it used to spring back, almost ripping your legs away. Those who survived the Enfield Bullet became real men. The rest were cast away into a playschool with 100cc bikes and tamed scooters to ride. Today Royal Enfield bikes come in three categories: Thunderbird, Bullet and Classic. The Thunderbird comes in a 500cc and 350cc versions. The Thunderbird has been around for almost a decade now. It’s now that the technology in it has just got better.

NOW COMES THE THUNDERBIRD 500 Since the 1980s, men in India have graduated to big bikes from the stables of Harley, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati and others. The Enfield, however, continues to be the most affordable bike for this lot. Where in the world can you get a cruiser for under 2 lakh? Only in India! The Thunderbird 500 is a well tamed machine. The technology that has gone into the Thunderbird 500 is new, the ride comfort far better and the styling a notch smarter. It’s definitely good to look at, easy to start with all its in-built electronics, reasonably good power and torque and perhaps, the most affordable two-wheeler for all those who call themselves ‘men’. When you see the Thunderbird coming towards you from a distance, it disappoints you. The tyres are too slim for a cruiser. With names like ‘Thunder’ and a 500cc engine you expect this two-wheeler to be a hunk of a machine. Yes it is solid looking, like an average Indian males with huge torsos and thin legs. There is a very modest splattering of chrome on the bike, the rest being covered in swathes if black finish. The black colour, in reality, never runs out of vogue. Visible changes are plenty. The fuel tank is bigger and re-designed. The headlight comes with a new projector assembly. There is an LCD tail lamp. The new blue backlit meters with a tacho as well as an LCD display are a rather good treat for the rider. The exhaust pipe too has been redesigned while there is a new split seat and redesigned rubber-ised foot pegs, a new LED tail lamp

assembly, a completely redesigned exhaust pipe... the list is rather endless. With an electric start and a fuel ignition mechanism, the bike does not have a lot of irritants that used to haunt it earlier. It starts easily and moves effortlessly to the different gears. Cruising at speeds of around 80kmph comes easy for the bike. The moment you cross the 100kmph stage, the bike refuses to tire and continues its journey effortlessly. The few days I rode the bike, I kind of became possessive of it. I didn’t want anyone to steal my Thunder. It was as if a bonding had evolved between me and the bike. Or was it simply bringing together the good old years and memories, nostalgia and the male pride all together on a single platform?

For long we had been hearing about the Chevrolet Tavera coming with a new BS IV engine. GM India people had gone around the country looking for a solid engine for their broad bodied Tavera. Finally they knocked on the doors of Hoshiarpur-based Sonalika group which had the wherewithal and rights to make the Rover 2-litre diesel engine. The engine was already fitted into the Rhino variant and had a tepid response from the Indian consumers. It was not a simple case of plucking an engine from a shop and planting it straight into the Tavera. GM India engineers worked on it for several months, fine tuning every bit of its technological features and finally fitted it on to the Tavera. The improvised engine design was given back to Sonalika so that the company could now start producing the new engine for itself as well as for GM India. For Sonalika, it was killing two birds with one stone. Since then both the companies have been doing brisk sales of their respective products—the Extreme of ICML and the Chevrolet Tavera of GM India.

LOOKS & FEEL No matter how young a girl Bernie Ecclestone gets to escort, the fact is that he is old. The same goes for the Tavera. The looks are dated. Now if you think old is gold, then go ahead and buy the Tavera, because it comes with a new heart transplant and subtle changes within. Though the exterior changes are very minimal, the front headlamps, grille and bumper have been slightly modified. Honestly speaking, the facelift is very cosmetic. The Neo 3 chrome labels identify the Tavera as a new one. One cannot miss the new alloy wheels as well. The overall package is good. Since the Mahindra Xylo is a fresher looking vehicle, there’s demand for it. The Toyota Innova is trusted engineering, hence that too is much in demand. The Tavera with its boxy looks could well be appreciated by the cabbies. It is very unlikely that you will find a daring man buying a Tavera for his family.

POWER & PERFORMANCE Like I mentioned earlier, fitting the erstwhile Rhino engine into the Tavera was no easy task. To cut short the boring technology spiel, the fact is that the GM India engineers took quite a while to adapt this engine to the Chevrolet Tavera. Because of a change in the placement and positioning of the engine, new engine mounts had to be designed. Air intake positioning too had to be changed. In short, it was a mega engineering feat that went into this heart transplant. With around 107bhp of power and a torque well above the 200Nm mark, the Tavera is now a powerful vehicle on the run. With a new 5-speed gear box, the vehicle speeds up to the 100 kmph mark rather easily. Speeding beyond this mark, comes easily too. There is tremendous refinement in the new engine. The first and second gears are very peppy. The shades of peppiness continue as one moves up to higher gears. The engine too is much quieter than its predecessor. On an open ground I went full throttle cornering it at high speeds. Body role is very evident but not as bad as is expected from a boxlike car like this. But remember this is a transport vehicle and should in no way pretend to be related to the Ferrari.

Interiors & Safety Features The interiors are not much to write home about. The top-end LT variant we drove has a two-tone grey and beige interior, an in-built audio system, power windows and leather seats. That does not make the vehicle plush by any standards. But it’s decent enough to be complimented. The dashboard is new with a different instrument cluster and a smaller diameter steering wheel. The seats are comfortable for long journeys. The three rows of seats can accommodate as many seven people with ease. With two separate seating arrangements for the middle row, a long ride in the Tavera could prove to be enjoyable. I found the floor mats in front of the second row of seats a tad out of size. So were so of the other mats. But the one thing that shall always be appreciated about the Chevrolet Tavera is the roominess it offers. Now with the new BS IV engine, it’s got a new heart too. So what if Bernie is old, he is still admired!

Tirthan Valley, an ideal getaway for Delhi-ites “A trout is a moment of beauty known only to those who seek it.” - Arnold Gingrich Report: Partho S. Nag, Photography: Alok Sharma

nd thus, we--a few of my friends and I---went for fishing in the stream of Tirthan River in Gushaini. As soon as we landed in this quiet village surrounded by the great Himalayan mountain, we decided to try our luck in catching some prized trout in the streams of this village. Equipped with all possible fishing equipment and the latest gadgets the remote place could offer, we were indeed in high spirit till we discovered that it was not such an easy task. After much attempt and trying only one of us could manage to master this seemingly easy task of angling. But, managing the fishing equipment was only half the job done; Catching a fish was another story altogether. Three hours of sitting still and no luck! Our expectations were waning with every tick of the clock, perhaps the fish knew

or so these kids were smiling with their catch, a reasonably big fish though not a trout! They did not miss the puzzled look on our face. To be fair to life, we did get a consolation after another hour of ‘fishing’

Travel with a trout about six inches long! Yes, this time our trip was not to any far flung unexplored land but our own neighborhood, Tirthan Valley in Himachal Pradesh, a weekend getaway. I was looking for a break from my daily routine and was in search of a weekend destination that can be covered in 2-3 days. While doing some research I came across a place called Gushani in Tirthan valley. That’s when I decided to go along with my friends to this place. As Saturday was a working day for one of my friends, we started our journey at night around 9.30pm. Night driving is always pleasant as long as you don’t sleep while driving. This is mainly because traffic at night is bearable and it is easier to cruise your vehicle at a decent speed without too much of braking. Night driving also helps in improving the fuel average of the vehicle. We were driving my friend’s XUV 500. We took the GT road and travelled via Sonepat, Panipat, Karnal, Ambala, Chandighar, Bilaspur, Mandi and then towards Kullu. But just before the Kullu tunnel we took a right turn towards Banjar which led us to Gushaini. Gushaini is

a small village in Tirthan valley. It took us around 10 hours of drive from Delhi to reach this scenic place, away from the maddening crowd, away from heat and dust of Delhi. Post monsoon, everything there looked awash in emerald glow! The shades of green were spectacular, surrounded by mountains, and the freshness in the air was as pure as it could be! This place is the ideal destination for someone seeking solitude in the arms of

nature. No commercial humdrum, no noise or air pollution, the villagers are kind and friendly; asking about your family and you, even if they are meeting you for the first time! What a welcome deviation from our big city culture where no one has time for the other person! There are several home stay options available but we decided for a place called Trishla Home Stay, run by Gyan Singh. When we reached this scenic place, it was already 7.30 in the morning. In a big city like Delhi no one would like to entertain a guest at 7.30 in the morning but here our hosts gave us a warm welcome with some refreshment and tea. We went to our rooms to freshen up and then stepped out to explore the surrounding. There is lot of scope for adventure sports such as trekking through the Great Himalayan National Forest, water rafting, fishing (please do not go by our experience!) . The trekking opens up a whole new world to the unaccustomed eyes, with its vast array of flora and fauna, some rare species of birds and plants, hard to find anywhere else in the world. Apart from generosity of nature, another unique feature of this visit was much talked-about ‘Home Stay’. Since people are kind and helpful, it is indeed a unique experience being part of their everyday

life, sharing home food cooked by them; it is a welcome change from impersonal hotel stay. Even government encourages such home stay because it demands no additional infrastructure and yet provides good source of livelihood for the local population. These home stays have all the modern amenities, comfortable beds, TV, geyser etc. This is a wonderful method

of cross cultural exchange, especially for people from other nationalities and ethnic background. We visited a small temple in the village, where everyone including the head priest in the temple welcomed us with prasad and even invited us for evening meal (bhog). We politely declined their offer and returned to our home stay. We were treated with some local delicacies

by the host. We even cooked our own food after taking permission from the host (which he gladly gave). On our return, we took a detour via Jalori pass (mountain pass nearest to Delhi at 10,800ft), Narkanda, Chail and then Chandigarh, which took about three hours extra. Tirthan Valley is indeed an ideal weekend outing for those staying in Delhi!

hen I left for Ireland, I was entirely clueless about the excitement in store for me. The first thing I realised after reaching there was that the Irish are a very friendly and hospitable people. Ireland was full of pleasant surprises such as stunning beaches, vast expanses of greenery and soaring mountains, exciting pubs, delicious stews, exotic cheese and colourful markets, etc. Northern Ireland My first guide Dee Morgan was one of those friendly and warm Irish people that I met in Belfast. Named one of the world’s top destinations for 2012, Belfast has emerged from a troubled past and is now a trendy, lively, happening destination, an absolute delight for tourists. For those who enjoy going to pubs and partying, there is never a dull moment in this energetic city. There is also sightseeing, shopping, great places to eat, drink and stay and an exciting calendar of events all year round in Belfast, enough to keep almost everyone on their toes. It was fabulous walking on cobbled streets, looking upto the Albert Memorial Clock, going to the beautiful Victoria Square for shopping, visiting some fantastic restaurants such as Tedford’s while in Belfast not to forget the delicious and intoxicating Irish coffee. Some 120 miles of spectacular coastline transports one past rugged and windswept cliffs, fantastic scenery, fabulous un-spoilt beaches, historic castles, churches and forts, over bridges, under arches, past bays, beaches and strange rock formations. After this we stopped at Bushmills Inn for a quick lunch of hearty Irish stew followed by a dash of whisky at Old Bushmills distillery. Next we stopped at The Giant’s Causeway, a magnificent natural attraction and Northern Island’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formed over 60 million years ago, when molten lava cooled suddenly on contact with water, it is an awe inspiring landscape of mostly hexagonal basalt columns. Republic of Ireland Next morning my guide drove me to the railway station in Belfast. After a comfortable train journey of two and a half hours, I reached Dublin. This city is one of Europe’s oldest and maximum cities, wonderfully cosmopolitan atmosphere with trendy bars; fine dine restaurants, stylish shops, hotels, is what Dublin is all about. Cobbled alleys, Viking remains, Georgian squares, Medieval and modern architecture all this side by side-Dublin’s history goes back over a thousand years. While in Dublin, I was first put up in The Shelbourne-a Renaissance hotel. This is one of the finest hotels in the city and has recently launched a spa where I underwent a treatment. This beautiful hotel has several interesting eateries such as the Lord Mayor’s lounge which I was told is well known for afternoon tea. There is also a bright little café which is very popular with locals and tourists where we had lunch. Spectacular scenery, archeology and abundant wildlife is what one should expect while visiting this valley. Its magnificence and serenity touches the soul. The Glendalough Valley is

located in the Wicklow Mountains and has several attractions such as the world famous Monastic Site with a Round Tower, to it’s scenic lakes and valleys, as well as a selection of walks and trails in the area such as The Wicklow Way. This valley is home to one of Ireland’s most impressive monastic sites founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. We proceeded to Macreddin Village which houses the beautiful Brookslodge hotel and Wells Spa. After checking-in, I went for a rejuvenating spa treatment and in the evening we dined at the Strawberry Tree which is Ireland only certified organic restaurant. The next morning we left for Dublin where I went on a food trial with Eveleen Coyle and discovered many culinary delights.

The same evening I visited Thornton’s a Michelin star restaurant in Fitzwilliam hotel run by MasterChef Kevin Thornton. My Irish trip was fun; it was also a learning experience in many ways. Ireland is intoxicating to say the least, with beautiful sights, exotic cuisine, and friendly people; it makes for the perfect holiday destination. I definitely hope to go back to this magical country that charmed me!

This restaurant has an interesting tale attached to it. A long, long time ago, the British went on trails across India to hunt the ever-elusive tiger. Those trips across the subcontinent formed a sort of pattern, popularly known as ‘Tiger Trail’. The menu in these restaurants has been created to reminisce about those adventures and contains preparations from each area that the trails covered. From the swamplands of the Sunderbans in the east, to the deep forests of Ranthambore in the west, and from the undulations of Dudwa

in the north to the depths of Nagarhole in the south, the Tiger Trail menu has it all. The trailers of yesteryears stayed in forest lodges, watched deer frolic the greenery as if it were their personal backyard, sat by the campfires while their guide cooked for them, and jumped in sheer delight on the very sight of a pugmark. As the trailers could not bring home a tiger as a souvenir from their trails in the wilderness, they decided to bring the various cuisines of the regions where they trailed the tiger. Memories of the various campfires that they sat by with a guide cooking a meal for them made these trailers create the Open Hearth where a chef will be a guide, and guests in Tiger Trail can create a meal to suit their tastes. Start a meal with Murgh Shahjahani Shorba (Royal Beginning to Tiger Trail culinary hunt), and then go for the Matka Murgh (chicken cooked on slow fire served in sealed earthen pot), or the Murgh Handi Lababdar, or Chingri Macher Malaikari (A traditional prawn curry from Bengal. Very popular in Sunderbans

region) or Masala Grilled Fish (Mustard and lime marinated grilled fish served with mint sauce). Other specialties inspired by the forest hunts include Tandoori Jhinga, (Fresh large prawns marinated with yoghurt saffron and select spices; roasted in tandoor, Tiger Abode of Srisailam inspired this creation.), Ajwaini Fish Tikka (Char grilled Fish inspired by Sunderbans region; marinated with an assortment of spices, cooked in tandoor), Chandi ka Tikka (A favorite from Dudwa, where boneless chicken is marinated in fresh dairy produce from local farms, like curd, cheese cream, and then finished in a tandoor with traditional Indian spices), Pug Mark (Lamb mince with specially grounded chef’s secret spices made to the shape of Tiger’s Pug & pan grilled and Gosht Seekh (Prepared with marinated mutton mince, skewered, roasted in tandoor. This was invented in Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh which is known for the number of tigers in this region).

Singleton: A tasting of history

ingle malt appreciation night was held at Park Hyatt Hyderabad in their South East Asian restaurant called Oriental Bar & Kitchen. The restaurant has a spacious bar with a perfect dining setting to enjoy a glass of Singleton by Glen Ord along with a specially crafted menu prepared by Chef Shanmuganathan Marimuthu. The event began with single malt tasting and a delightful pairing of an enticing four course menu led by Sam Chandy. He heads the South India marketing function for Diageo’s luxury portfolio. Sam rounded everyone and got the tasting started as he interacted with the audience on various attributes and tasting notes of Singleton. The Singleton of Glen Ord 12 years old is a single malt scotch whiskey from Glen Ord distillery in the Scottish highlands. To complement this single malt chef had

prepared an eclectic variety of main course ranging from chicken served with lemon, black sesame to stemmed wanton mix vegetable with spicy sauce. “The hotel takes pride in hosting whiskey appreciation evenings in Hyderabad and the dinner was an opportunity to associate with our guests” said Sven Hoffmeyer, General Manager at Park Hyatt Hyderabad.

Saint Clair Wine of Origin

P

ark Hyatt Hyderabad had announced an evening of wine appreciation along with savory culinary delights which took place at The Dining Room on 9th November this year. The event began with wine tasting and food pairing, led by Matt Thomson, consultant winemaker who has been involved with Saint Clair wines since its inception. His natural, uncluttered approach helps produce wines with distinctive characters, which are clearly appreciated by an increasingly sophisticated wine drinking community in various wine markets around the world. Matt spends most of his time in the vineyards until harvest monitoring the changing flavour of the grapes. He notes the difference in flavour between bunches and between the different vineyard areas to ensure that they are picked at the most favorable time. Blessed with a fabulous palate and incredible skill for optimising these grape flavours at harvest, his skills

and the time he spends in the vineyard are extremely important in Saint Clair’s viticulture and winemaking process and the results are wines of outstanding quality. The spectacular ambiance of The Dining Room created a perfect mood for the wine evening while Matt Thomson took great pride in familiarising the guests about its unique attributes. Matt Thomson feels Indian cuisine pairs very well with Saint Clair wines. “The Sauvignon pairs well with prawn kebab, daal and dosa, Chardonnay with Korma, Chicken Tikka Masala and Tandoori Chicken. The Pinot Noir pairs excellently with Rogan Josh or any other mildly spiced lamb dish. I wish guests develop the new flavors for these wines from New Zealand as we are one of the leading wine companies with exceptional quality records,” he added. Saint Clair family estate is owned by Neal

and Judy Ibbotson in Marlborough since 1978 and produces some of the leading wines in the country. To complement these finest wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir the chef had prepared an eclectic variety of main courses ranging from pistachio crusted tenderloin with arugula, brussel sprouts, olive crusted baked betki, baked zucchini and feta on a bed of tomatoes and many more. “The hotel takes pride in hosting Saint Clair wine evening for the first time in Hyderabad and the dinner was an opportunity to associate with our guests” said Sven Hoffmeyer, General Manager at Park Hyatt Hyderabad.

Numerological Preparations: For the Number 5 Concept and report: Jyoti Balani Food and location courtesy: Kabab Hut, Sun n Sand, Pune, India Numerology as we all know is used to determine an individual’s personality, strengths and talents, obstacles, inner needs, emotional reactions and ways of dealing with others. These days a lot of people use numerology to examine their life, take advantage of unexplored opportunities, or simply figure out where to go next. But few people are aware there is a connection between food and numerology as well. Every number has both good as well as bad qualities. People associated with a particular number are more likely to suffer from a sickness owing to the ill effects connected with their numbers; which is why numerologists recommend foods that help in curing that particular weakness. We consulted prominent numerologist Swetta Jumaani and she came up with a list of ingredients suitable to each number starting from number 1. These ingredients were then passed onto talented chefs from Pune to create 6 unique recipes using their creativity and imagination. Needless to say the results were amazing and are here for all to see and try out these recipes.

Number 5: The Highly Versatile Number 5 people {Mercury}: People born on the 5th, 14th and 23rd in any month are termed as Number 5 people, ruled by the planet Mercury, and their lucky Numbers are 5. Gemini’s and Virgos are ruled by number 5 too. Mercury {Buddh} is the fastest of all the planets, known to be the planet of speed, communication and knowledge {Buddhi}. Mercury, as we all know is quite versatile in its characteristics. Due to this Mercurial influence, these people are very adaptable to almost everyone. They get along with most people, but they also have wonderful elasticity of character. Mercury is also known to be the planet of communication. Himesh Reshammiya is a number 5 too; a believer in numerology, his name with the extra ‘M’ in Reshammiya was added in order to bring his name on Number 5. They recover from the best of blows; nothing seems to affect them for long. Like Mercury, found in a thermometer, when disintegrated, has the ability to join back, the best part being that it does not show it has been hit, as you won’t see a mark on it. Number 5 people hate any monotonous {run of the mill} type of work and flow towards ‘get-quick-rich schemes’. They want to make money the ‘fast’ way, even if they have to speculate in stocks, gambling or taking risks. If they are good, they remain so; but if they are bad, all the preaching in the world cannot reform them. Their greatest drawback is that they exhaust their nervous system to such an extent that they fall victims to nervous breakdowns of the worst kind, and under any mental tension, they become irritable and short tempered. Such people are highly strung, who live on ‘nerves’ and appear to crave for ‘excitement’ and ‘dare devilry’. Aamir Khan {March 14} is a classic example of a Number 5 who craves for versatility, which is evident from the fact that he likes to accept different kind of roles, and plays a

Swetta Jumaani is from the famed Jumaani family, an ardent fan of her father, the Eminent Numerologist Bansilal M Jumaani, Swetta keenly studied this occult science of numerology under the competent guidance of her father who was a capable Guru. Swetta Jumaani inaugurated her office in Pune on the 6th of Jul 2003. She created major ripples when her very first prediction on Aug 24 2003, regarding the effects of the planet Mars as it moves closer to the earth, rang true word by word. She can be contacted on http://www.jumaani.com. Here she tells us a little about number 5 people, their characteristics, their lucky colors, numbers, recommends the line of work that will benefit them, etc.

CUISINE different ‘avtaar’ in every film. Kajol {5th August} is also a number 5. As they are very active, quick-witted, and fast in thought and action a number 5 person would hate slow and dull work. They would find it difficult to work with the same set of people for a long time. They can expect a few changes in their life or career.

Line of Work: They should work in the area that involves travel, transport, and communication of every kind, liaison work,

writing, media, advanced inventions, computers, television, advertising, investments, public speaking, teaching and all things that concern the young. They are so quick and versatile that they would fit in easily in almost any line of work they set their mind on. If they develop their will power they can rise in life to a very high position. The weaker side of the nature could make them vulnerable to be involved with social lavishness, drinking, gambling, etc, and lead a self-indulgent life. Their over-versatility too can be a weakness if not well directed.

Lucky Colors:

Colors do not influence them but they should try to wear light colors as much as possible, especially that of

green or blue.

Lucky Numbers: The most important numbers and dates in their life for doing anything important are the series of ‘five’ and all its series, such as the 5th, 14th and 23rd. Numbers and series of 1, 3 and 6 and Dates such as the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 19th, 21st, 24th and 28th are also lucky for these people. Number 5’s are usually adaptable to almost all the Numbers, except the number 9 or those born on the 9th, 18th or 27th in any month. Number 5 people are likely to suffer from nervousness, exhaustion, digestive problems, neck, arms, ears, legs, speech problems, blood disorders, eczema and skin eruptions, respiratory system, insomnia and paralysis. They should include the following ingredients in their regular diet: carrots, parsnips, oatmeal or bread, low fat milk, yam, sweet potato, well done meat / chicken, parsley, avla(gooseberry), caraway seeds, banana, thyme, hazel-nuts, walnuts and nuts of all kinds.

Using these ingredients Master chef Ishtiyaque Qureshi has dished up 5 recipes for you.

imple, eco-friendly and Vaastu interiors are the hallmark at Chi Kitchen and Bar. But there’s more than just the ‘Chi’ (positive energy in Chinese) to it. The four-year old restaurant chain has three outlets in Delhi, all specialize in major pan-Asian cuisines - Chinese, Japanese and Thai. I had tried the one at Safdurjung Development Area (SDA) a couple of months back and looked forward to the other in Select Citywalk Mall at Saket. As I meandered through the posh buildings and made my way into the ritzy Select Citywalk Mall, I found that Chi was ideally located, surrounded with bustling shops and wore a pleasant facade. It was past tea-time, I started with the Mix

Seafood Soup that I chose from a wide range of potpourri of soups ( 160-190). These included Sour and Pepper Clear Soup with broccoli and shiitake, Yunnan Jiaozi Dumpling Soup, Fresh & Flavourful Chi Corn Soup, besides the regular Hot &

Sour and Manchow. I tried a slice each from an assortment of Chizzas (Chinese pizza) and each slice turned out to be distinctively flavourful with highly creative alias’ such as Good Fellas, A Passage to India, Alice in

Wonderland, The Gods Must be Crazy, The Green Mile and The Right Stuff ( 315 - 450). The origin of pizza lies in China and it is believed that Marco Polo took the recipe with him to Italy! The dimsums variety ( 150-395) includes prawn, pork and chicken dumplings. The chef’s special Titanic dimsum platter, a collection of 16 pieces priced at 1,200 includes the best of prawn and chicken dumplings Har Gao, Bao and Pork Puff. Chi specials include lobsters, an epicurean delight served with tangy black pepper sauce ( 1,200), soft shell crabs ( 1,050), steamed fish ( 430), Nasi Goreng, Burma cuisine Khaousay among others. When dining out in a group one can opt for Ramen, family soupy meal in a bowl, and claypots like the Bak Kut, Laksa Lemak claypot and the Hunan pot. Have it with Teppan, stir fired noodles, some of which are: La Mein, Yaki Saba, Phao Thai, Yaki Udon all priced at 450. For the main course go for the delectable varieties of duck priced at 415 and the Thai and Japanese curries priced between 350-450.

over 13 years in the restaurants industry and has been closely associated with some of the most successful restaurants and bars such as Tabularasa, No Escape, Shalom, Trevi, Laid Back Waters and Italic.

64 / Car N Style / January 2013

In his many years of work experience, Sohrab has seen the food and beverage industry from the eyes of an employee, an investor and as a consultant and is the cofounder of the parent company Squareroot Hospitalities Pvt. Ltd. In a brief interaction with Sohrab at the Saket Mall inside Chi, Car N Style learnt Chi has recently had a tie up with one of the leading Malls in Mumbai for an outlet of 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft area. The first Chi started 4 years back in the SDA complex.

The second in the row is Chi at Selectcity Walk Mall and it has recently added Chi at Jangpura and Chi, Chandigarh is in the offing. Sohrab is a professional golfer and keyboardist and about taking out time for his passions, he told me: “The whole idea is to organise life in such a manner so that all the interests can be pursued. A lot of time is spent in hiring managers and operations, personnel - aggressiveness, passion and flair are the three most important things followed by the industry. Once the business is in safe hands operationally, then one does not get

into the details of running the business. Furthermore, once new projects are conceptualized then the next 8 months are spent in creating processes and standardization”. Setting up superior systems and processes to handle business is Sohrab’s specialisation. He loves simplicity and a chunk of his time is utilized in analysing and creating systems which are easy. “There is no point trying to finish your entire task sheet; don’t feel guilty if some

www.carnstyle.com

tasks have not been completed, they can always be done the next day. Always time the tasks - I use certain timers and clocks on the laptop to time the tasks that I am working on and stick to the timings, as the amount of work accomplished in a timed manner is much faster than not having a target at all. I don’t watch TV – instead, I’d rather record the program and then watch it in spare time. Most of the times, I try to find podcasts associated with that particular program. I visit facebook, twitter

and other social media sites only once a day. I have made music, golf and other hobbies a priority and give them equal importance as work. Keeping the phone on silent while doing important tasks calls can wait. All missed calls are anyway recorded!” Meanwhile, the Wasabi Prawn Dumplings arrived on the table as a surprise. Each bite simply melted in my mouth; the Rainbow Prawn Dumplings were a feast for the eyes and for the palate. Not to forget the aromatic Mix Seafood Soup that I recommend to all non-vegetarians, especially in the winters. The Chizzas are thin and crunchy with lavish cheese and myriad toppings. The overall dining here is very pleasant and the menu is eclectic with the Titanic Platter being a must. A three-course meal for two without alcohol would cost between 1,500-2,000. My experience with the 2 Chi outlets makes me want to try out the third Chi at Jangpura. I shall do it in the New Year!
