EDITOR’S NOTE

J

ust before going to the press we got to know the prices of the Ford EcoSport sports utility vehicle. Prices start at 5.59 lakh. The pricing is so revolutionary. It’s going to hit competition where it would hurt them the most. Renault is definitely going to panic. So will Mahindra to some extent. Every motoring journalist worth his experience could never have guessed the price of the EcoSport as accurately as the ones announced by the company. Immediately after the press conference where prices were announced, Ford India dealerships were besieged by people queuing up to book the vehicle. Where in the world can you get such a modern SUV for under 6 lakh? On the cover we have the Mercedes E-class that was also launched in New Delhi. It is heartening to note that Mercedes-Benz cars are now more youth oriented and its styling more contemporary. In fact, our columnist Tutu Dhawan has described the Mercedes-Benz metamorphosis in his column. Apart from new launches, we have also a ‘First Drive’ report on the Mahindra Verito Vibe. We drove the Vibe but realised that this car is unlikely to appeal to the youth. It’s not going to move the market the way a Mahindra XUV500 did. It simply lacks the oomph factor. We have also driven the Mercedes ‘A class’ a luxury hatchback that is definitely going to grab numbers. Gone are the days when small cars were construed as cheap cars. This Mercedes is an expensive small car, but worth every penny you pay for it. Typical of the ‘A’ factor, it’s an Astounding car! We also drove the GL 350 from the Mercedes, a monstrous luxury car. The experience was amazing. It’s intimidating but you get to love it almost immediately. P. Tharyan

he three pointed star of Mercedes-Benz has always stood for elegance, luxury and safety. The German car maker has been in India for a very long time. Decades back, these luxury vehicles were imported into India by Indians returning home from countries like England, US or Canada after their professional stints abroad. People from Ludhiana in Punjab, for example, had a penchant for such cars even during the Partition days. Much later Mercedes came into India in collaboration with Tata Motors. Now it’s got its own manufacturing plant in Chakan, near Pune. Bollywood too had a huge crush for Mercedes cars. Characters who portrayed immense wealth in the movies always possessed a Mercedes car. Very few in India were really aware of a BMW or an Audi. Many decades ago when Bollywood actor Feroze Khan smashed a brand new white Mercedes car in the Hindi movie ‘Qurbani’, it was the talk of the town. But then over a period of time, when a new India emerged after the 1991 liberalisation, Mercedes was construed as an old man’s car. Somewhere along the line, Mercedes cars lost their appeal. The models looked staid and boring. The styling no longer appealed to a young India. It’s only when BMW and Audi came out with their youthful and well styled cars, did Mercedes realise that there were few takers for their cars. Mercedes-Benz cars looked best suited for grandfathers and grandmothers. Young Indians preferred the more tangy BMW and Audi cars. These were better designed, looked effervescent and had a distinct styling. But things are changing, and changing very rapidly. Suddenly Mercedes-Benz seems to have woken up to ground realities. Recently it launched the E-class. The car looks youthful and seems to exude whatever a young person desires. Perfect in styling, perfect in comfort and perfect in luxury. That in short describes the new Mercedes-Benz cars. The company’s A class, a compact hatchback is a runaway success. Its monstrous GL class and the M Class all have a modern and youthful look about it. For the first time BMW and Audi are stumped. They never expected Mercedes to change its dated looks. Now an all out war among the three German car majors is expected to erupt. Mercedes seems to have learnt its lesson quite well. Globally, there has been a makeover of its models. Their cars are now much better designed to appeal to the youth. The boxy and boring looks have given way to aesthetically designed models. As for Eberhard Kern, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, he could not have come to this country at a more opportune time. The Mercedes brand is expected to do good numbers in the coming months, maybe even get the better of its two German rivals. If that happens, then Eberhard Kern has every reason to smile! BEYOND LIMITS

Polaris ATVs

Conquering terrains and minds

P

olaris All Terrain Vehicles (ATVS) have conquered the toughest terrains of the world. Now they are beginning to conquer the minds of people

seeking high levels of adventure and thrill. In India, Polaris Experience Zones are beginning to attract people of all age groups keen to try their hands on a Polaris vehicle, thereby rekindling their adventurous spirits.

Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) may sound all adventure and macho, but the experience one derives riding a Polaris ATV is several notches higher. ATVs can overcome some of the most inhospitable terrains. That is one reason why these vehicles

www.carnstyle.com

BEYOND LIMITS are sought after by those in the Defence, Rescue, Beach Patrolling etc. They also double up as off-road vehicles for those keen on adventure sports. US based Polaris began its innings in India almost two years ago and has since launched over a dozen models. They are made for all age groups and are suited for a variety of activities such as Adventure & Recreation, Sports, Defence, Beach & Forest Patrolling, Rescue, Agriculture etc. Engine displacements range from 50cc to 900cc and come in petrol and diesel variants. In India, Polaris Experience Zones (PEZs) were conceived in partnership with private entrepreneurs. Specially created tracks give people an experience of riding an ATV through some very tough hurdles that include rocky terrains, dirt pits and water bodies. Amazingly, these zones are seeing huge crowds experiencing the thrill of riding a Polaris ATV. And as a business model, these zones have caught the fancy of young entrepreneurs. The latest additions to the list of PEZs are two circuits in Bengaluru in association with Play in Sarjapur and in Yeshwanthpur with Target Games & Facilities. Rajkot PEZ has opened in association with Axterra’s Club. Billed as one of the most exciting tracks, it is spread over 2.5 acres near the 150ft Ring Road. Speaking on the Bengaluru PEZs, Pankaj Dubey, Managing Director, Polaris India notes, “Bengaluru has a rich racing culture and has a wide variety of terrains, hence the off-road vehicle segment has the potential for growth. Southern India is an important market for us as it contributes majorly towards our growth story in India. We plan to increase the number of such tracks

www.carnstyle.com

from 13 to 25 by end 2013.” According to Rajkot track owner Sanjay Patel, “Rajkot has always been a trend setter for Saurashtra region which has plenty of venues for off road riding. The first week response confirmed the success of the track. We did this without much marketing efforts.“ “The response to the Polaris Experience Zone has been good. Unfortunately, not many people know about off-road vehicles in India. However, we are pleased that we are getting repeat visits by our customers. In order to create more awareness, we are coming out with some robust strategies. We will be promoting our track at malls, schools and colleges”, says

Suputhrudu, Head, Operations, Target Games and Facilities Pvt.Ltd, Bengaluru. Currently, PEZs have also opened up at Greater Noida, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Nagpur, Goa, Pune, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Munnar and Chennai. Polaris India dealerships cover 13 major cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Jammu, Ludhiana, Indore and Dehradun. With more and more people flocking to PEZs across the country, it is obvious that off-roading on Polaris vehicles is not just a fad, but something that inspires people to seek and experience higher levels of adventure and thrill!

fter electrifying the small car segment with the revolutionary e2o, Mahindra’s newest innovation is the Verito Vibe. This pseudo-hatchback has been carved out of a Verito sedan by slicing its back off. The quest was to create a car which has the practicality and space of a sedan with the fun and freshness of a hatch. And Mahindra has sort of

www.carnstyle.com

pulled it off with a few niggles. We drive this innovation in the hot and humid Delhi to find out what the fuss is about.

EXTERIOR What Mahindra has essentially done is surgically remove the rear of a Verito sedan and created a similar sized compact vehicle. The styling remains unchanged from the sedan to keep the costs low. The major surgery is at the rear. The raked rear windscreen falls off onto the

JULY 2013 / 17

FIRST DRIVE vehicles, it’s the heavy duty work they do which defines them. The built quality is decent and we expect lesser pricing on the exterior panels if you by chance ding it.

INTERIOR This is where the Vibe shines best. The cabin is a full sized sedan’s cabin, in fact a bit bigger than a few. The rear seat can accommodate three full grown adults at ease. As the Verito, Mahindra has provided

flat back. The rear taillights have been pillar mounted for better visibility. The tail lamp gets a strip of streaming LEDs which looks quite cool, we like it. Another highlight

are the alloys which Mahindra calls champagne alloys, essentially honeycomb patterned and give the car a sporty character. You need to give a second glance at the Vibe, an eye catching car this is not. But then so is the Verito, looks are not the strong point of these

the centre headrest for the middle passenger as well. One tiny issue is that the front seats lack adequate support and bolstering which might become a bit uncomfortable for long journeys. The Vibe comes with a powerful AC, even in the scorching 42 degrees of the Delhi summer the Vibe kept us chilled. The plastic quality used in the cabin is not refined but is sturdy and could last for ages. The D6 variant that we drove had a 2-DIN audio system with 4 speakers and support for CD/MP3, USB and AUXIN. The boot can swallow 330 litre of luggage. However the loading bay is cumbersome and looks more like

www.carnstyle.com

FIRST DRIVE

a design flaw than an innovation. It would have been better if Mahindra let the rear glass open with boot to ease boot access.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE The engine is another ace up the Vibe’s sleeve. The Vibe is powered by a 1.5 litre dCI diesel engine sourced from Renault. It might not be a scorcher when it comes to horsepower but more than makes up for it by being very torquey and tractile. You never need to push hard up the rev range. The traffic infested streets of Delhi gave us plenty of opportunity to test this ability. The Vibe just kept pulling through traffic without unnecessary gear shifting. Mahindra also claims 20.8kmpl fuel efficiency figure from the Vibe which

www.carnstyle.com

shall keep customers plenty happy. Ride and handling are decent and the Vibe gobbles potholes with ease. The Vibe is very stable at high speed and the steering has apt weight. But that weight hampers comfort in the city driving where it feels heavy. The Vibe doesn’t like corners and the steering feels vague, but then again it is not a hot hatch. Now all of it comes down to the price. Mahindra has cleverly priced

the Vibe in the price range of 5.69 lakh to 6.55 lakh. At this price point the Verito Vibe is a decent proposition worth paying attention to. It is a spacious compact car with plenty room for five adults, a frugal engine and practical enough for daily use.

EXTERIOR With that aggressive snout and sloping backside, the A-class looks absolutely charming. Perhaps it is one of the best looking cars among all the hatchbacks and luxury sedans in this segment. The reflective pins in the front grille add glamour to the subtle statement of this Benz. Do not be fooled by the word hatchback and start thinking about its diminutive size, it is not small at all. This little Benz is perfectly proportioned for

www.carnstyle.com

our congested roads. It fact the only issue we had were because of the tight all round visibility, much because of the small rear windows. Mercedes has given the A-class Bi-Xenon headlamps and Daytime Running Lights which we have to say look fantastic and provide brilliant illumination of the road ahead. Our test vehicle came equipped with gorgeous 17 inch alloy wheel which deserve special appreciation. They

do hamper the ride quality but no complaints, they look stunning. The rear gets LED tail lamps and two exhausts adding to the sporty appeal of the package.

FIRST DRIVE INTERIOR The interior of the A-class is in tandem synchronisation with the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. Clean simple lines, black tones with hints of subtle chrome inserts. The inside of the A-class feels like a mash-up of multiple Mercedes interiors together creating a fresh salad. The quality is premium and well above all in the competition. The instrument cluster is sporty and legible. The A-class also gets Mercedes’s Attention Assist with 11 electronic assistants for the driver. The seats are comfortable and adequately bolstered. Driver seat is fully electric, whereas the passenger seat has to be manually adjusted. The six speaker audio

FIRST DRIVE unit is an Audio 20 CD Radio with support for MP3/WMA/AAC, AUXIN and connection for your apple devices. The centre of the dashboard is graced by a 14.7cm TFT display which is not integrated in the dash, rather floats on it separately.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE The power equation might not sound very good in the A180. The 120bhp petrol engine has to pull nearly 1400kg. But to our surprise the car manages it very well. The sprint to 100kmph is done in just above 9seconds and the top speed is an impressive 200kmph. And remember this performance comes from a turbocharged 1.6

www.carnstyle.com

litre engine, so it is frugal as well if you are careful. The acceleration is not immediate but steady and progressive without any surprises. The 4 cylinder power plant is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which is a quick shifter as long as you leave it in automatic. The paddle shifters allow some control over the automatic gearbox but are slow in response. Better to leave the transmission in S mode for enthusiastic driving. The ride is just right, a bit to the stiffer side for sportier handling characteristics. The steering is effortless in true Mercedes tradition and is speed sensitive. We again would like

to mention that this is one of the best cars launched till date in our country. It does everything you ask it for, and some. And atop all this it is a Mercedes-Benz. The three pointed star has always been hard to reach, but with this new A-class more people can aspire to join the family now. The only real competition will arrive from the Volvo V40 Cross Country, Mini Cooper S Countryman and the soon to be launched BMW in the form of 1-series.

y Ed calls me up one evening ordering me to report to his house at 0430 hours the following day for active duty. But you can imagine the enormous smile I had on my face when I heard him say, “we are reviewing the BMW 640d Gran Coupé tomorrow”. Oh joy! I will happily slaughter my sleep for that. As a matter of fact I actually could not sleep that night, waiting for the slow hour hand to pass by quickly. At 0400 my enthusiasm eroded my patience and I zipped to Yoda’s place. And there it was,

26 / JULY 2013

standing in the dark, in all its subtle and elegant glory.

EXTERIOR On the face of it, take a 6 Series Coupé and keep stretching it until you reach the length of a 7 series limousine. What you get are two extra doors and more legroom at the back. This BMW has been designed for the booming Chinese market where the typical Chinese bosses like to be driven rather than drive. The 640d Gran Coupé is one of the best looking cars to ever come off the German manufacturer’s stable. The V-shaped contoured long bonnet flows down to the BMW kidney

grille. The signature corona rings are flattened at the bottom and feature LED technology. The flowing lines run along the roof and wheel arches of the vehicle and gently end at the exquisite rear. And that is not it, there’s more to this transformation than just 113mm of stretched metal. This tiny conversion beautifully combines the aggression at the front with perfect curvy lines at the side, and finally the swooping roof line ending in a sleek and squatting rear thus creating absolute magic. Such is the impact of the whole package that it lends a stronger appeal to the Gran Coupé than the previous 2-door 6 Series Coupé. You just cannot stop

www.carnstyle.com

WE DRIVE ogling at this magnificent machine.

INTERIOR As tradition dictates, the entire orientation of the cockpit is towards the driver, allowing easy ergonomic access to the gear lever, iDrive controller and other control knobs. The centre of the dashboard is lorded by a 10.2 inch screen. All navigation, media and vehicle settings are controlled by the iDrive system which is viewed upon this monitor. The Dakota leather upholstery is standard and combines three colours. More attractive features are the frameless doors and the seatbelts that are neatly integrated in the seats. Although expensive, still we insist you to select the optional Bang & Olufsen high-end surround system, which is designed exclusively for this model, and delivers flawless sound quality delivering 1,200 Watt

www.carnstyle.com

of total power output. The quality interiors have been carried over from the 6 Series CoupĂŠ. Everything that you feel and touch absolutely oozes class, possibly the best interiors done by BMW. The real changes are in the rear. The rear passengers will find it comfortable and spacious. BMW calls it 4+1 seating, recommended for short

drives as the middle seat suffers in both legroom and headroom. Another issue is that if the front passengers decide to lower their seats all the way, the rear passenger foot well suffers in terms of space. But despite these very small inconveniences the rear of the 640d Gran CoupĂŠ is a well sorted place to be in.

JULY 2013 / 27

WE DRIVE

POWER AND PERFORMANCE The car that we drove had BMW’s 3.0 litre TwinPower diesel heart. The 640d Gran Coupé accelerates to 100kmph from a standstill in 5.4 seconds. The multi stage supercharging gets rid of the lag and the 8-speed automatic

transmission delivers seamless power to the rear wheels. The impressive bit was the growling exhaust note and the tasty turbo whistle that encourages you to push harder. Ride and handling is pure BMW territory, it is neither too luxuriously soft nor too sporty hard, just right. Driving Experience Control allows

a driver to choose between various modes between comfortable and sporty driving. The steering communicates every square inch of the tarmac to your fingertips. We noticed how accurately the speeddependent steering gains weight as the speed builds up. Also on the options list is the Integral Active steering, that turns the rear wheels along with front ones ensuring crisper responses. A host of safety technologies keep you safe in tricky situations.

CONCLUSION The BMW 640d Gran Coupé stands ahead of its competition both in terms of looks and practicality. It is elegant and classy to behold, drives very well, is practical enough for four people and returns decent fuel economy as well. Our only question is, and we are sure everybody is asking the same, why would you buy the 640d Coupé? I guess, that’s more for the romantic kinds!

he summers are relentless this year. The sun is raining embers. Birds are getting roasted mid flight. But wait, clouds are approaching at the horizon, a hope. The weather might turn nasty. However our photographer is excited, “this will turn out to be a fun shoot. We pick up the new Mercedes Benz GL-class and drive to the outskirts of New Delhi, and lo, it has started raining. The winds have gone strong and powerful and is ripping off branches from the trees. Visibility has deteriorated. The big Mercedes just smiles and urges us to go on. Are you the sort of chap who wonders if you can move your apartment on four wheels? Mercedes-Benz has an answer for you, the apartment sized GL-class. The GL defines the word big in every tangible aspect. Big engine, big seats, big boot, just plain big everything that is. For 2013 Mercedes-Benz has reworked on the GL in its second generation avatar. Reworked as in bigger again, the new GL is longer, wider and a wee bit taller than its predecessor.

www.carnstyle.com

JULY 2013 / 31

WE DRIVE

EXTERIOR The previous generation GL looked like an enormous bulky truck, or rather like an actual apartment with flat walls. But this second generation is much trimmer and fitter. The body has been sculpted and has more angles now. It looks more like a car now than a bus. The quality is flawless both inside and out. The GL has all the goodies from adaptive automatic headlights to rain sensing wipers to 21” AMG alloys and the list goes on. The sheer size of the vehicle gives it enormous road presence, added to the imposing value of the threepointed star of course. However, size is a problem also. The GL looks more at home on an open American highway than a busy Delhi street. Handling the countryside is just fine, but as soon as you enter traffic, the GL’s extremities appear to be in different time zones.

INTERIOR The interior of the GL-class bathes

you in luxury and comfort. The ‘launch edition’ that we drove had Designo leather upholstery, the finest hide that Mercedes-Benz has to offer. The front seats are heated and cooled and are fully adjustable at the touch of a few buttons. Every button is in easy reach of the driver and the built quality exudes utmost class. The Thermotronic 3-zone climate control is very dynamic and caters to all three rows

of passengers. For the third row of seats, Mercedes has incorporated something called Easy-Entry system. Essentially what it means is that the backrests and seats of the second

www.carnstyle.com

row can be divided separately in a ratio of 40:60 and folded down easily by using a handle to unlatch from both sides. Another highlight is the temperature controlled cup holders which can be heated to 55째C or cooled to 8째C as per the requirement. Mercedes has upgraded the COMAND system which takes care of audio and navigation. You can possibly connect anything to the big Merc and sink in high quality sound experience. The display console is 7 inch and also features a Music Register with 10GB hard disk space.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE Despite the hefty size and weight of the GL-class, the engine does an excellent job of carrying the big Mercs bulk around. There is noticeable turbo lag, but once spooled up the GL touches 100kmph from a standstill in 7.9seconds, impressive from a vehicle close to 2.2 ton in weight. But it is not just tarmac performance. The GL is a

www.carnstyle.com

very capable off roader as well. Because of the rains our off road track was wet and slushy now. The 4Matic all wheel drive system with 50:50 power distribution sorts everything out for you. We were faced with a slippery wet 70째 incline which looked a bit too ambitious, but we had to have a go anyway. The GL just kept climbing straight and true, isolating us completely from the effort required climbing such a slope. On the way back down the slope we got to use the Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) system. DSR allows the vehicle to maintain a driver preset speed between 8 to 15kmph driving down steep slopes by controlling the engine, transmission

and braking system. Because of the bad weather we got to test another innovative offering by Mercedes is the Crosswind Assist, which stabilizes the GL against strong gusts of winds. The GL is a charming vehicle. Looking at it you might wonder it is huge and bulky for our roads. But the amazing part is how easy it is to manage it size. It will drive seven people in premium luxury and comfort, isolating them from the chaos and heat and cold and anything else that mother earth throws at it, on the road, or off it.

onferred with ‘Best Chef of India’ award by the Government of India and being chosen as Indian ambassador for the United Nation’s Clean Cookstoves campaign for the underprivileged people in the developing countries aren’t the only things achieved by celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor. He represented India in 2012 in World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) at Daejon, South Korea and initiated the Indian ancient ways of ‘Ayurvedic Cooking’ to the world of chefs, represented India as a Food Ambassador in Spain under the Spanish Government’s Indian Future

Leaders Programme (IFLP). He is the most famous face from Indian subcontinent with continuous presence on Indian TV through his cookery show ‘Khana Khazana’ for nearly two decades. On International TV he has prominently featured with Rachel Ray, Richard Quest and Rene Redzepi. Sanjeev Kapoor is also termed as Rachel Ray of India. His best-seller books reach an enthralling number of more than 150 titles. In an interesting têteà-tête with Jyoti Balani, he tells us more about his food channel and his mantra for success.

JULY 2013 / 35

TOP CHEF Please tell us about your channel FoodFood and what was the thought behind conceptualizing it? How is it different from other channels? FoodFood is not a purist food channel. It’s a general entertainment channel. I’ve been doing my cookery show Khana Khazana for nearly 20 years and always felt the need that there has to be a niche channel devoting maximum time and attention to food and had been asking too many people, but didn’t get any warm response. So, I thought if anybody has to do this in India, let it be me and also nowhere in the world has any chef ever done a TV channel of his own. That was the biggest cake and I was sure I wanted to have it! FoodFood

basically has its emphasis on food and lifestyle and the content has anything and everything related to food: cooking, travel, lifestyle with food, restaurants, beverages, reality shows, celebrity food interests, etc. This is a specialty channel. People come here by choice knowing what they will get. How far do you think India has come in terms of the food industry? Has globalization added to the progress if any? Indian food has definitely become more popular now, mainly because of globalization. The number of Indians traveling abroad has increased, as has the number of foreigners coming into India. Exposure to good Indian food has

increased manifold. Technology has brought the world together. Books, television and the internet have made the world so small. Also many Indian chefs settled abroad are creating names for themselves and are creating waves in the global food industry and in the process popularising India and Indian cuisine. With so much emphasis on healthy food and cooking these days, does your channel help people learn healthy cooking? Health is a very subjective word. Each person’s health definition and need is different. My channel broadly educates all about any food and its health aspects and its up to them what to pick and how to apply. Health or healthy food is the most misused phrase these days. Is losing weight the only health concern? What about the people who need to gain weight? Is that not a health requirement? So, first of all, we need to clear our minds on this topic and post that, for every question that people may have on health, answers are available on FoodFood channel! Is it a challenge to keep innovating recipes? No. As I have an open mind, travel a lot, observe a lot, taste everything on my way, am ready to learn from anyone and can never be bound by scripted recipes, so innovation comes easy. Nature and ingredients are beautiful toys to play with and I love to experiment.

TOP CHEF promote Indian cuisine? From my childhood, I had this unique urge of doing something different and going the opposite direction as compared to others. And when you say that one wants to become this or that, I believe that theory is completely a misnomer. Similarly, it was not like a fairy tale story for me as well that I had to become this or that! I was a normal student – studious and by God’s grace, always among the high rankers. Taking cooking as a career was not my childhood ambition. It just happened. In those days, the fashion was to study engineering or medicine and as I said that I had an inborn trait of always doing something different and so I chose Hotel Management. I came to this profession accidentally; became a chef accidentally and became famous accidentally! It was all about doing the right things at the right time. Since then, the only mission for me has been making Indian cuisine number one in the world, and I’ll not rest till I make it numero uno and empower most women to be self reliant through the language of food. After FoodFood Channel, what would be the next level of aspiration for Sanjeev Kapoor? Future Plans? Each day is new. I never knew I’ll do Khana Khazana, restaurants, website, digital commerce, TV channel, food products or would be a brand ambassador for many products. None of these were planned activities. So, even the next, falls into the same category. All that I can say is my best is yet to come! What is your mantra for success in this day and age where

www.carnstyle.com

Kesari Shrikhand

competition is cut throat? I always believe in taking the path which is less traveled (when people are walking in one direction, I choose to take the opposite), love challenges, can give my best when pushed against the wall, can smile in adversities and I believe that one needs to be honest to oneself to achieve anything big. What is the most popular show on the channel? There are many shows that are popular but if I have to pick one, I’ll vote for “Mummy ka Magic.” Is FoodFood going to expand to

other countries as well? It has already expanded. You can see FoodFood in the Middle East, Canada, parts of United States and very soon it will reach Europe and other countries as well. What does Sanjeev Kapoor enjoy doing when he isn’t working? It is not only work for me all the time, for sure. I love photography and indulge in this hobby whenever I travel abroad, which is quite frequent. I am also a diehard fan of music and enjoy playing musical instruments like the drums and, not to forget, want to learn professional singing next!

Casual fiery Portuguese chicks!

B

efore making its foray into Delhi, Nando’s, the Afro-Portuguese casual restaurant chain had opened outlets in Bangalore, Chennai, Chandigarh and Ludhiana and had advantageously done its social media marketing drill. As I was hankering for some good flavourful roast duck or even grilled chicken that is not easy to get in mundane tandoori Indian restaurants, I came across the PeriPeri rooster raising its animated and pointed curved hood on my facebook page beckoning me to Vasant Kunj. At the DLF Promenade Mall, I realised the restaurant had built up a massive following of birdeaters. Standing in the queue at the entrance counter, restlessly, I distantly saw through the massive glass windows - beer accompanying the charcoal-grilled chicken and it was quite a sight. It took barely 20 minutes waiting and inside I was, looking forward to dig into the tender flame grilled chicken (Nando’s mainstay) among other delicacies like chicken wings, wraps, salads and perfect fries.

44 / JULY 2013

We decided on the full meal platter that had 4 huge pieces of chicken, 4 regular sides, corn on the cob, coleslaw, potato wedges and french fries. Alongside, we selected the Hot Level of the Peri-Peri flavor and enthusiastically slathered it with Hot Garlic Peri-Peri sauce. Thankfully, we did not underestimate the extremely hot grade of the sauce that was capable of starting a fire in the gullet. The chicken was very succulent and if you love your chicken with skin, then this is the place you can relish it for the reason as the skin has all the sauces spread over it. You could wash it down with the bottomless chilled coke, fanta or spirite or just go for one of the designer mocktails available with specialised flavours and herbs. Nando’s PeriPeri, the African bird’s eye chili menu comes from Portuguese-ruled Africa with lavish hints of Brazillian espetada and

every single item of food that you order will have some amount of the trademark sauce in it. Make sure you tell the waiter what degree completely non-spicy to very spicy - you want your food. For the under 12 years little grownups, there are special meals. The Peri-Peri chicken is can be ordered in three portion sizes: half and quarter, the latter is also available boneless. The Peri-Peri mystery is in keeping the chicken skin intact, so that it remains succulent, making it a few notches above the tandoori chicken that is dry in texture and hard on teeth. There are quite a few starters and snacks like the chicken livers and Portuguese roll (for Rs 200), espetada rustica (for Rs 430) which is served on an upright skewer reminiscent of Brazilian churrasco and Moroccan butternut and grilled pepper with chicken fillet in a burger (for Rs 220). The livers were rather tart; the espetada too tough and the burger too terrene compared to the fine Peri-Peri. The menu features besides its signature chicken dishes, the likes of burgers, hummus, pita wraps etc. Each table has 3 varieties

www.carnstyle.com

of sauces - garlic, mild and hot. The desserts, mainly crunch roll and cheese cake come in chocolate and caramel flavours and make up for a sweet finish to the Peri-Peri experience. The service is quite warm and you will feel that it was worth the wait outside. A jazzed up bar is visible as you enter. A good variety of beer is available and I settled for Carlsberg, relished with juicy chicken wings. For the vegetarians there are Peri-Peri sauce options with cottage cheese as the main ingredient instead of chicken. There are plenty of spirits and wines from South Africa, Australia and India. The restaurant’s decor is a cross between fast food and familystyle dining that’s quite pleasant with remote African hints done at random. The walls have sketches

on the walls, the animal print upholstery, and the leather seats are comfortable. The table service is pre-set and the plates awkwardly inadequate to tackle the huge chicken thighs. Original works from South African artists adorn the walls. You will find amazing work from bushmen on community farms to painters from Johannesburg and also by aspiring artists pursing subsidized diploma courses at the Nando’s studio! If you are looking at taking a pleasant break from the ubiquitous chicken preparations of tandoori, continental and Chinese then you must pay your gastronomy obeisance at Nando’s. In all probability, you will prefer the PeriPeri chicken over the KFC or at other places in the city of gluttony. The eatery’s plucky website is as much worth a visit.

Battlefield 4 Multiplayer: The Future of Online Warfare Electronic Arts Inc. studio, DICE, unveiled the next chapter of Battlefield 4 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo(E3) held at Las Angeles, California. DICE revealed two innovations that would revolutionize multiplayer gaming, called Levolution and Commander Mode. Levolution creates a dynamic and emergent battlefield where gamers can use the environment to their advantage like cutting the power to a building to shroud their enemy in darkness or reducing an entire skyscraper to rubble to alter the battlefield. With Levolution, the environment reacts to the player’s every move and ensures no two games will ever be the same. Commander Mode places two opposing players at the heart of the situation room with a birds-eye view of the battlefield. It’s a tug-of-war match between two commanders as they deliver critical intelligence and powerful assets to their troops below to the turn the tide of the battle. Gamers will feel the rush

of Commander Mode on current-generation and nextgeneration consoles as well as PC. For the first time, commanders can also take control from their iPad or Android tablet. Battlefield 4 will be available 1st November 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platform. Battlefield 4 will also be available for Xbox One, the all-inone games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4.

The result of that meeting was an agreement which led Fiat to expand its production to include refrigerators, thanks to the invaluable contribution of Smeg.
