EDITOR’S NOTE

F

or once we have beaten every form of competition, whether it is the internet, magazine, newspaper, newswire agency or the television. Yes, we have a scoop on the cover page of our April 2013 issue of Car N Style magazine -----the detailed plans of Dutch luxury car maker Spyker to introduce the Spyker C8 Aileron in India in 2013 and the B6 Venator in 2014. Like I have always maintained, my magazine may not have the backing of a foreign journal, or big ticket investors, or fancy and pompous auto journalists in its team, yet we have continued with our steadfast quest for what we call “unadulterated journalism”. Let me reiterate, journalists are like catalysts. We are like a conduit, passing on vital information to the world around us. Let’s not make a mockery out of it by doing frivolous things that are superficial and clownish. Let’s pass on the real news to the world. At Car N Style magazine, we simply bring you the best of the different worlds, whether it is the latest global launch, the Formula One race, an upmarket hotel, the latest gadget or simply a delectable cuisine. No other magazine offers such a treat. Our focus will continue to be on automobiles. We also had the opportunity to drive Honda’s first diesel car in India. Apart from our own views on the car, our columnist Tutu (R K Dhawan) too has commented on the car. We all found the car extremely well conceived, but for the grunt that comes out from the diesel engine! There is also a report on the Geneva International Auto Show which saw the launch of some great looking super luxury cars. Have fun reading Car N Style magazine! P. Tharyan

TUTU’S FINE TUNES

Honda Amaze: A fuel efficient car with a grunt

H

R.K. DHAWAN (TUTU)

6 / APRIL 2013

onda Cars India has finally come out with a diesel car in India. A diesel engine was the only thing, perhaps, that kept the company away from attaining volume sales in the passenger vehicle market. Though the Amaze will come in both petrol (1.2 litre i-VTEC) and diesel (1.5 litre i-DTEC) engine options, it’s the diesel powertrain that is going to create quite a buzz in the Indian market. The 1498cc DOHC i-DTEC engine based on Honda’s ‘Earth Dreams Technology’ comes with 16 valves and produces a maximum power of 98.6bhp@3600rpm and a torque of 200Nm@1750rpm. With an all aluminium block and head plus the conventional timing chain with steel sprockets known for its trouble free and low cost maintenance, it is the lightest engine among the engines with similar torque configuration. Mated to a manual 5 speed transmission, the car has a fuel efficiency of 25.8km per litre under standard conditions as per ARAI. I drove the diesel car in some very scenic spots in Goa. I have mixed feelings about the car. Though I salute the Honda team for their efforts in developing a diesel engine for the Indian market with such high fuel efficiency, I am a tad disappointed with some aspects of their efforts. The diesel engine has got a grunt which is quite audible and a bit too discomforting for those looking forward to some quiet sound in comparison to the existing engines in the segment. Honda has a solid fan following in the country. Its models like the City, Brio, Accord, CR-V etc have been well received here. Lot of keen enthusiasts have been waiting for this diesel power plant from them now for a very long period and that has finally arrived. Now, for a country like ours that is obsessed with fuel efficiency and pays no need to noise levels, the company may find a lot of buyers for the diesel Honda Amaze. But I have a different opinion. I am wondering why a company like Honda which makes the world’s best engineered products from cars to robots to planes could not make an engine that was a bit quieter. Yes, understandably this is an all aluminium engine unlike a cast iron engine, but still... Also, aesthetically speaking, I found the engine compartment a wee bit unappealing. Generally when you open the bonnet of a car you see the engine neatly fitted. Here the engine is totally exposed, with an insulation sheet missing! An insulation sheet not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the engine compartment, but also muffles the sound generated by the engine. Why, pray has this not been fitted when one knows that it has a noisy problem? All in all, I rate this entry level sedan very high for its ride quality and handling, its power, its interior cabin space, quality and looks, and the power generated by the diesel engine. Now waiting for the pricing! (As told to P. Tharyan)

Range Rover Sport

All-new

he all-new Range Rover Sport was revealed to the world on the streets of New York. The product from Land Rover (part of Tata Motors), is the ultimate premium sports SUV – the fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever. The Manhattan skyline was the perfect backdrop for this world premiere with more units of Range Rover Sport sold in the United States than any other global market and New York being the model’s best-selling city. At launch, all-new Range Rover Sport customers will have a choice of two engines – a supercharged 5.0-litre 503bhp V8 petrol engine and a 3.0-litre 288bhp SDV6 diesel engine. The powertrain line-up will be expanded in early 2014 by the addition of a 3.0-litre 254bhp TDV6 and high performance 4.4-litre 334bhp SDV8 diesel engine. In addition, an innovative, high-efficiency diesel Hybrid model will be available to order in 2014. Developed alongside the highly-acclaimed all-new Range Rover, the new Range Rover Sport now delivers the brand’s best-ever on-road dynamics together with class-leading, genuine Land Rover all-terrain capability. The new, technology-packed, Range Rover Sport, presents customers with a more assertive and muscular exterior, more luxurious interior and the flexibility provided by the option of occasional 5+2 seating. Exploiting Land Rover’s breakthrough lightweight suspension design and innovative dynamic chassis technologies, the Sport’s all-new, first-in-class

NEW LAUNCH aluminium architecture achieves a weight saving of up to 420kg. This transforms the vehicle’s dynamic performance, enabling it to blend agile handling with exceptional comfort, offering a unique mix of sporting luxury and a dynamic, connected driving experience, along with CO2 emissions reduced to 194g/km. The new Sport is just 62mm longer than its predecessor, yet at 4,850mm, it is shorter than other 7-seater SUVs and most E segment sedans, bringing greater manoeuvrability and ease of parking. However, a significantly longer wheelbase (increased by 178mm) provides greater room and improved access for rear passengers. Shorter overhangs at the front and rear, plus additional width (+55mm) give the new vehicle a more modern stance. The dynamic new Range Rover Sport has a bold and progressive exterior design that is assertive, powerful and muscular, hinting at the improved driving performance, and positioning the vehicle clearly between the Range Rover and the Evoque through a clear, shared design DNA. With its ‘faster’ windscreen angle, streamlined and rounded profile and lower, dynamic sloping roofline, the new Range Rover Sport is 8pc more aerodynamic than the outgoing vehicle (Cd 0.34). The new Sport is 149mm shorter and 55mm lower than the all-new Range Rover on which it is based and model-for-model weighs 45kg less. To maximise personalisation, customers will be offered a choice of wheel designs ranging through 19-, 20-, 21- and 22-inches in diameter including the iconic “Viper’s Nest” wheel design, now available for the first time across all Range Rover models All-new, the electric power steering is characterised by a lighter, more direct steering feel. A choice of two full-time 4WD systems will be offered. One system provides a two-speed transfer case with low-range option, for the most demanding off-road conditions with a front-rear 50/50pc default torque split, and 100pc locking capability. The alternative system is 18kg lighter and features a single-speed transfer case with a Torsen differential, which automatically distributes torque to the axle with most grip, working together with the traction control systems to deliver excellent traction in all conditions. The default front-rear torque split of 42/58pc is designed to provide a rear-wheel drive bias for optimum driving dynamics.

Jaguar XKR-S GT Ultimate Road King aguar (part of Tata Motors) has unveiled the Jaguar XKR-S GT, the ultimate road-going, track-ready XK coupe. Developed by Jaguar’s ETO division, its production limited to just 30 cars for the North American markets. Jaguar XKR-S GT is the rarest model in the 25-year history of Jaguar R performance cars. The Jaguar XKR-S GT is powered by an allaluminium 5.0-litre supercharged quad-cam V8 engine, boasting 542bhp and 680Nm of torque, delivers not only exhilarating performance but also tremendous efficiency thanks to the technologies incorporated into it, including spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT). The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. Combined with the aerodynamic and suspension changes, plus revisions to the traction control system’s calibration, the result in straight-line terms is a 0-96km time of 3.9 seconds. Electronically limited top speed is 300kmph. The high-pressure die-cast lightweight aluminium block is stiffened with cast-iron liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps, providing refinement to match its power. The four-valve cylinder heads are constructed from recycled aluminium, between them sitting the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger fed by two intercoolers, which feature their own water-cooling circuit to reduce the temperature of the pressurised air thereby optimising power and efficiency. “The XKR-S GT is the most extreme iteration of the Jaguar R Brand’s performance focus. Utilising race-car derived technology, all-aluminium construction and an uncompromised approach to aerodynamic efficiency,

NEW LAUNCH the result is a car as capable on the track as it is exhilarating on the road,” said Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar. A range of bespoke carbon fibre components, including an extended front splitter, dive-planes and elevated rear wing, all work to maximise the XKR-S GT’s aerodynamic downforce. Technical learning from the development of the new Jaguar F-TYPE two-seater sports car has also been applied to the XKR-S GT’s suspension and steering systems, optimising both immediacy of response to driver input and agility. The XKR-S GT is available in Polaris White with unique graphics and Jaguar R-S GT script on its louvred bonnet. The warm charcoal interior - with red accents - features 16-way electrically adjustable ‘Performance’ seats finished in soft-grain Warm Charcoal leather and Suede cloth with the Jaguar and R-S GT scripts integrated into the backrests. Jet Suede cloth headlining and a Jet Suede cloth steering wheel, with aluminium paddle shifters, are fitted as standard. Script to the tread plates and console highlight the exclusiveness of the XKR-S GT. The XKR-S GT features a carbon-fibre front splitter of race-car wrap-around type; extending forward by 60mm, it starts the optimisation of airflow around, over and underneath the car. Aggressive carbon-fibre twin dive-planes and wheelarch extensions further the efficiency of airflow around the car, while below the addition of an optimised aluminium front valance serves to smooth airflow under the car as well as enhancing engine and brake cooling performance. A rear carbon-fibre diffuser ensures the smooth exit of air from underneath the car, while the elevated rear wing - also in carbon-fibre - works in combination with the decklid mounted spoiler to maximise rear downforce. At its electronically limited top speed of 299.33kmph, the XKR-S GT produces 145kg (320lb) of downforce. Bonnet louvres serve as a further engine cooling aid while also helping aerodynamic performance by improving the airflow through the front end of the car. Integral to the revised suspension system is its new spring and damper module design. The XKR-S GT has a motorsport-derived twin spring system mated to Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics damping system - the dampers now being ride-height adjustable. Front and rear spring rates are respectively 68pc and 25pc stiffer than on the XKR-S, while the damper tune is much more track-focused, providing increased levels of body control and grip.

It’s specifically built for the performance enthusiasts who like to exercise their machines at more than 150 road-race courses around North America. The car has been configured in-house by the Chrysler Group’s SRT (Street and Racing Technology) team in collaboration with professional road racers----the exclusive, street-legal and single-spec 2014 SRT Viper TA (Time Attack). Under the hood of the 2014 SRT Viper TA is the handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-litre, mid-front V-10 overhead-valve engine. Performance ratings are 640bhp and 813Nm of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world. Only 33 units of the 2014 SRT Viper TA in Crusher Orange will be built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, beginning in third quarter 2013. Based on the SRT Viper model – the lightest vehicle in the line up, the 2014 SRT Viper TA package builds upon the legendary on-track capability of the American hand-built supercar using a majority of pre-developed components straight from the SRT stable, that are combined into a carefully balanced package that extract the most out of the Viper ultralow centre of gravity, 50/50 weight distribution and largest contact patch in the production car world.

Seven new electric Defender models from Land Rover Land Rover unveiled seven new electric Defender models at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The research vehicle delivers zero emissions whilst retaining its tough, go-anywhere capability. The standard diesel engine and gearbox in the 110 Defenders have been replaced by a 94bhp, 330Nm electric motor twinned with a 300-volt, lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 27kWh, giving a range of more than 80km. In typical, low speed off-road use it can last for up to eight hours before recharging. The battery can be fully charged by a 7kW fast charger in four hours, or a portable 3kW charger in 10 hours. The electric vehicles (EVs) retain the Defender’s legendary four-wheel drive system and differential lock. Because the electric motor delivers maximum torque from the moment it starts, there’s no need for gear shifting and the transmission comprises a single speed, 2.7:1 reduction gearbox combined with the existing Defender four-wheel drive system. A modified version of Land Rover’s Terrain Response System has also been incorporated.

New Porsche 911 GT3 makes its debut The new Porsche 911 GT3 premiered at the Geneva show. This is the completely -redeveloped fifth generation of the 911 GT3. The 2014 911 GT3 is fitted with a new engine, transmission, body and chassis. The car now sprints from zero to 97kmph in 3.3 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 314km. The 2014 911 GT3 will go on sale in the United States late in 2013 and will be priced from $130,400. The new 911 GT3 features the first active rear-wheel steering in a production Porsche, as well as optional full LED headlights. The powertrain of the new 911 GT3 is composed of a 3.8-litre boxer engine yielding 475bhp featuring a 9,000 rpm redline and a specially developed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK) which drives the rear wheels. The sixcylinder engine is based on the same engine as the 911 Carrera S, although they share only a few common parts. All other components, particularly the crankshaft and valve gear, were specially adapted or designed for the GT3.

LaFerrari, defines excellence for Ferrari LaFerrari , the limited edition-series special from the House of the Prancing Horse made its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show. There will be only 499 such cars that would be built. The hybrid technology used, known as HY-KERS, represents the perfect combination of maximum performance and lower emissions. LaFerrari in fact emits just 330 g/km of CO2 but without resorting to electric-only drive which would not fit the mission of this model. The HY-KERS system is, however, designed so that in future applications a car can be driven using exclusively electric power for a few kilometres and, during development testing, a full-electric version of LaFerrari achieved just 220 g/km of CO2 emissions on the combined cycle. The LaFerrari is the first car in Ferrari history to be powered by the HY-KERS system. The ICE represents the pinnacle of engine development and research, with a 6262cc V12 that punches out 800 CV and revs to a maximum of 9,250rpm, a record for an engine of this displacement. It also features a very high 13.5:1 compression ratio and a high specific output equal to 128 CV per litre. The engine is coupled with a 120 Kw (163 CV) electric motor, giving it a combined power output of 963 CV. Total torque generated is in excess of 900Nm.

Toyota showcases new FT-86 Open concept Japanese car major Toyota presented its new FT-86 Open concept for the first time at the Geneva motor show. The car has been created to test the water for the possible introduction of a convertible version of its globally acclaimed GT86 sports coupe. The car’s external dimensions match those of the coupe (length 4,240mm, width 1,750mm, height 1,270mm), with the fixed hard-top replaced by a multi-layered fabric roof with a glass rear screen. Inside it has the same 2+2 seating format, with the roof folding down behind the fixed rear seats, with minimal impact on the space available for luggage. The FT-86 Open uses the same platform and powertrain as the GT86. At its heart is naturally aspirated, horizontally opposed 1,998cc four cylinder “boxer” engine. Equipped with Toyota’s D-4S direct injection technology, this compact unit is set low, helping lower the car’s overall centre of gravity, and is capable of producing 100bhp per litre. It drives the rear wheels through a short-throw, six-speed manual gear shift or a sixspeed automatic – the latter with the world’s fastest paddle shift speed, just two tenths of a second.

New –Road personal mobility vehicle from Toyota Toyota has come out with a new i-ROAD personal mobility vehicle (PMV) making its world debut at the Geneva motor show. It is a new, flexible form of transport designed for city streets. Seating two in tandem and under cover, i-ROAD is an electric vehicle with a range of up to 50km on a single charge. Using ‘Active Lean ’ technology, it is safe, intuitive and enjoyable to drive, with no need for driver or passenger to wear a helmet. It’s the latest concept to emerge from Toyota’s 40 years of research and development of vehicles that use less energy, places less burden on the environment and practical in meeting people’s everyday transport needs. i-ROAD takes the company closer to its goal of creating the ultimate range of eco cars. Toyota is paving the way for several types of eco cars to co-exist in the future, by adapting its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology for use in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). While hybrids, plug-in hybrids and FCVs are ideal for mainstream use over medium to long distances, Toyota believes in the feasibility of EVs to serve as a main mode of transport for short urban journeys, and has 10 years’ experience in the research and development of PMVs.

The

odd lot

It is not just the mainstream manufacturers who rocked the floor with their amazing supercars at the Geneva Motor Show this year. There were unknown brands from lands afar showing off tasty treats from their inventory of very rare and exclusive cars. Design studios from Italy, Switzerland, Germany, etc have created limited editions and a few one offs for selected wealthy customers. The trend is quiet obvious here, the Italians and French designs make more of a beauty statement whereas the German vehicles represent sheer brute force with their stratospheric performance figures. Then there were Japanese creations with sharp track characteristics and further Swiss cars which were just plain out worldly.

PEUGEOT ONYX CONCEPT This supercar is sculpted by design enthusiasts in a quest to create an amalgam of beauty and performance. The wings and doors are made of unpolished copper which in time will turn green thus changing the persona of the vehicle. The material used for interiors is NewspaperWood, which is newspaper turned into wood. The engine is a 3.7 litre V8 Hybrid producing 600bhp and the body shell is made of carbon fibre which results in a staggering less than 2kg per horsepower.

WIESMANN GT MF4-CLUB SPORT Wiesmann is an exclusive manufacturer of extremely rare and puristic sports cars. To celebrate their 25th anniversary Wiesmann have created the GT MF4-CS, a limited run of 25 track-only cars. Track-only suggests the omission of the GPS system, air conditioning and even the radio all in the quest to find more speed. The body might look archaic but be advised it is made of glass fibre on an aluminum monocoque frame. The engine is sourced from BMW’s M division which produces 420bhp of power at 8300rpm and a torque figure of 400Nm at 3900rpm from a 4.0 litre V8. Mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and coupled with kerb weight of 1350kg the GT MF4-C

PININFARINA SERGIO CONCEPT Senator Sergio Pininfarina headed the Italian design studio Pininfarina and to celebrate this bond this car bears his name. Based on the Ferrari 458 spider, this futuristic two seater barchetta looks like it arrived from the past. The Sergio bears no windscreen hence two helmets are provided for the safety of the occupants. As tradition dictates the Pininfarina designs are custom built for special customers only.

ITALDESIGN GIUGIARO PARCOUR Is it an SUV, or a crossover, or a GT car, or is it a midengine sports car? Giugiaro described it as a “type of GT car that did not exist until now…an SUV designed for any terrain.” The engine is a Lamborghini derived 5.2 litre V10 that belts out 550bhp that propels the Parcour to 100kmph in 3.8seconds. The suspension and engine mapping can be changed using dash-mounted control knob between comfort, off road, winter and high speed settings.

Nissan Juke R was already a very capable car giving wet trousers to supercars, and now it has been given the Nismo treatment. The Juke Nismo runs on lower springs and torque vectoring AWD has been upgraded for better traction on all surfaces. The engine has been tweaked as well, the 1.6 litre turbocharged engine now pumps out 197bhp of power. Further additions include a new diffuser and updated aerodynamics generating more downforce.

MANSORY LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR LP700-4 If you thought the Aventador was intimidating enough you were wrong, Mansory managed to make the raging bull angrier. The front wings and bonnet have been modified to provide more downthrust which also gives a wider and more aggressive stance to the bull. The interiors of this beast have been made more luxurious and plush. To further add to the sex appeal the start/ stop button as been moved to the roof. Mansory has tinkered with the engine-management system and added a new high performance exhaust system to pump 744bhp at 8300rpm and a turning force of 750Nm at 6000 from the V12 engine. The Mansory Aventador accelerates to the ton in 2.8seconds and the acceleration ends at 355kmph.

he second 2013 Grand Prix F1 race at Kuala Lumpur’s Sepang race track ended on a contentious note as Sebastian Vettel grabbed the first place ignoring orders from his team Infiniti Red Bull racing-Renault. At that point of time his colleague Mark Webber was leading the race. In fact, Webber who had driven like a champion throughout the race, reaching the

lead position from the fifth on the grid, was told to ease off in the closing stages to protect his car and the tyres. At that point of time he was ahead of Vettel and also Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton. Vettel too was supposed to follow suit, rather he overtook his stunned teammate as he romped home to his first win in the 2013 series. Later Vettel apologised for his mistake and for ignoring the strategy call from his team principal Christian Horner. “If I were given the

chance to do it again (differently) I would. I can only repeat myself: I’ve made a mistake and I have to apologise to Mark,” said Vettel at the press conference. The third podium finish by Hamilton too was mired in controversy. He came in third after his team Mercedes ordered his teammate Nico Rosberg not to overtake as they raced towards the finish line. The Malaysian Grand Prix race began on a wet note when just an hour before the race began, there was a heavy downpour. Several

he car market in India may be down and out, but that’s not deterring luxury car makers to continue their focus on India. The latest to join the luxury car market in India will be Dutch car maker Spyker. The company will be bringing into India the C8 Aileron at the end of 2013, which would be followed by

the B6 Venator by early 2014. The B6 Venator Concept was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in early March 2013. In communication with Car N Style magazine, Spyker N.V. Chief Commercial Officer John Walton said that his company was planning to launch the Spyker brand in India in the second half of this year. “We certainly see the Republic of India as an important market, where the

heritage of the Spyker brand and the bespoke design of our product will be appreciated by the growing number of luxury car buyers. For a number of years we have studied the Indian car market, and short listed potential dealer candidates,” Walton noted. He said that with the C8 Spyder and C8 Laviolette models his company offered compact sports cars with manual gearbox only. “Now the time is right for us to enter the Indian market. The C8 Aileron has an automatic gearbox and is a bigger car compared to our previous models. The C8 Aileron will be presented in New Delhi later this year. With the B6 Venator Concept, which was unveiled in Geneva last week, we will have a second automatic available, but also a manual version for the more traditional driver. With a fresh model line-up and latest technology we look forward to presenting Spyker to Indian customers,” he stated.

www.carnstyle.com

However, keeping in mind the exclusivity of the company’s product, only a handful of C8 Ailerons will be made available to India in the first 12 months after launch. Initially unveiled at the 2009 Salon International de l’Automobile in Geneva, and the Spyker C8 Aileron coupe took pride of place at the 2010 show just before entering production. Inspired by the company’s aviation heritage, Spyker’s second-generation sports car features cues from secondgeneration aircraft propulsion, highlighting the turbine blade, rather than the propeller which adorned many elements of Spyker’s first generation cars. With sleek aerodynamics, a long GT wheelbase, luxurious and spacious cabin and world class ZF six-speed automatic transmission, the new C8 Aileron broadens the appeal of the Spyker brand while maintaining the marque’s exclusivity. Latest-generation LEDs are used for the front and rear turn

indicators and the sidelights within the sharply-styled headlight units. The cockpit canopy, for example, is extended rearwards to optimise the aerodynamic performance of the car. Power comes from a naturally aspirated Audi 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine. This power unit features a 90 degree angle block, 40 valves (5 valves-per-cylinder, 3 intake and 2 exhaust), and variable valve timing. Highly responsive, the V8 generates 394.5bhp at 6,800rpm and a torque of 480Nm at 3,500rpm. It goes from 0-to-100kmph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 300kmph. As standard, the Aileron is equipped with unique 19-inch alloy wheels. High-impact 10-blade 19inch directional Rotorblade wheels are available as an option. The C8 Aileron’s generously proportioned Michelin tyres – 235/35 ZR19 (front) and 295/30 ZR19 (rear) – provide exceptional grip and progressive handling. The car is priced in the Middle East at US$ 244,990 ( 1.33 crore).

COVER REPORT

B6 Venator concept mong the super luxury cars with extremely potent drool factors that were unveiled at the 83rd Geneva International Motor Show, was the B6 Venator concept which is expected to be in India early 2014. The company feels that the year 2013 will mark the global resurgence of Spyker as a creator of meticulously built automobiles. The Spyker B6 Venator Concept is a compact, 2-door mid-engine sports car. Designed by Victor R. Muller, Chief Executive Officer of Spyker N.V., the Spyker B6 Venator Concept makes a defiantly contemporary statement whilst paying homage to its past, making it instantly recognisable as a Spyker. Highly detailed design, bespoke materials and aviation-inspired elements are a core part of the Spyker DNA. The name “Venator” is Latin as well, meaning “Hunter” – a nod back to Spyker’s “Hunter” fighter aircraft of the early 20th century. The leather used in the interior of the car is sourced from the Litano range produced by the Royal Hulshof Dutch Tanneries in Lichtenvoorde. Hulshof uses only West European first choice bull hides and a special tanning process that produces the beautifully rich colour palette. The aerodynamically shaped glass aircraft canopy extends rearwards to minimise drag, optimising performance. The Spyker B6 Venator Concept will begin production in early 2014 for key markets including Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and India, followed by the US in autumn 2014. . The Spyker B6 Venator Concept price point will be approximately $125,000 / $150,000 (approx. 67.95 lakh/ 81.53 lakh). With the announcement of the Spyker B6 Venator Concept, the company once again proves its Latin axiom: “Nulla tenaci invia est via” – “For the tenacious no road is impassable.” Exterior highlights of the concept car include the trademark V-shaped radiator grille, 1903 Spyker logo, 3D LED rear lights and 19” Turbofan wheels. The red cover on the ignition switch evokes the spirit of starting an aeroplane, as does the dashboard that lights up as part of the ‘pre-flight check.’ The dashboard is shown with a turned aluminium fascia, similar to those seen on Spykers of the 1920s. Pressing the engine start button brings to life a powerful V6 engine that delivers 375+bhp.

TRACK DAY TRACK DAY WITH Lamborghini

e were given two options at the

incredible global track at Buddh circuit---One, to drive a Lamborghini car, two, to be driven in one. We looked at each other. Neither of us was drunk. Driven? Nah….NEVER! Drive, yes, yes, yes, yes………. Holy

36 / APRIL 2013

Mother of this beautiful Earth…. Here was a chance to drive a Lamborghini Gallardo with a 5.2 litre V10 engine and more than 500 horses all tucked away gently under its hood! Not very long ago Lamborghinis were all about big power, big noise and big speed. In the year 1998 Lamborghini came under the ownership of Audi and the sensible Germans tried taming the raging bull. The Gallardo came into existence as a more accessible

Lamborghini, with a relatively smaller V10 engine. Over the years the baby Lambo has become stronger, fitter and achingly beautiful. Lamborghini India, the India wing of the Italian manufacturer, recently celebrated the 50th birthday of the brand with a track day organised at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida. We got the opportunity of experiencing two models of the companies Gallardo lineup, the LP 550-2 and the LP

TRACK DAY

570-4 Superleggera. Audi has done a great job in making the Gallardo a more driveable car but we are glad to report that the bull is still aggressive. First up was the LP 550-2 which is the two wheel drive version of the Gallardo. This model was designed according to the taste of a very specific person, Valentino Balboni, former chief test driver at Lamborghini. This is the first Lambo since the Diablo which is powered biased at the rear wheels and that makes it really special. The looks are fantastic and in tune with the assailing and sleek character of the Gallardo. We love the Reventon style nose. Everything about the car is more communicative and it feels very direct. We can tell you that the driving experience is just exhilarating. Be advised it still is a 542bhp rear wheel supercar and does get hairy if you push too hard. And then is the sound of the

www.carnstyle.com

engine. The V10 is bolted to the driver’s spine and it howls right in your left ear. The Buddh Circuit is an excellent facility and lets you thoroughly exercise your adrenaline rush. We thought the bulls will find the track a bit snug for their

enormous potential, but it was the other way round. After three vigorous laps in the LP 550-2 we were presented with the LP 570-4 Superleggera which has the traditional four-wheel drive system. Lamborghini put the Gallardo on

TRACK DAY a diet and trimmed off a scarcely believable 70 kilograms of weight, which is even lighter than the two wheel drive version. This was done by replacing a large chunk of the plastic and metal parts by carbon. This has made this the fastest Gallardo on the roads. Being a four-wheel drive sports car the LP 570-4 comes equipped with launch control to get lightning starts off the line. The acceleration is vicious and the car touches 100kmph in 3.4 seconds and takes just 10.2 seconds to reach 200kmph. The 6-speed e-Gear gearbox is very quick but jerky through shifts. The suspension setup is hard and will communicate the entire texture of the road surface to the seat-of-yourpants. The amalgam of a 570bhp mid mounted 5.2 litre V10 engine and a weight of 1,340 kilograms and four wheel drive system creates a sensational driving experience. The handling is very swift and the car reacts to slightest of the steering inputs. But still the character is very Lamborghini and be advised not to release the throttle whilst entering a corner. The noise of the blipping downshifting is intoxicating and will encourage unnecessary gearshifts. And amongst this sea of noise, power and drama the surprise was the sheer effortlessness required to drive the two breathtaking machines. Gone are the days when the driver needed to get help from the passenger to drive a Lamborghini. After 6 laps in the two vehicles, as the cars ticked themselves cool, alas it was time to say goodbye. We thanked the Italian lead driver and bode farewell to these two fantastic Italian exotics. We will be back, hungry for more!

BHARATPUR REVISITED

haratpur is a peaceful little town in Rajasthan about 185km from Delhi. Once upon a time, there was a local Jat community leader by the name of Suraj Mal, who was extremely

fond of duck hunts. Just so he could lead shooting parties on ducks and other types of fowl hunts, he had water from a nearby irrigation canal diverted via an intricate system of dams and dykes to turn the entire area into a wetland park. Birds naturally started flocking to it and thus a hunting site was born. Birds

were in plentiful supply and the first recorded shoot by Lord Curzon and Lord Kitchener was in December of 1902, with a tally of 500+ kills. The record for kills in one day belongs to

Lord Linlithgow though - 4200+ kills in just one afternoon (more in the morning) in 1938 – and is noted on a sandstone board within the park. Known as the Keoladeo Ghana

National Park today and a UNESCO World Heritage site too, tourists intent on birding with cameras/ binoculars instead of guns, flock to it in droves. Bharatpur also has a car connection not many people know about – in the early sixties and also early days of the Delhi Statesman rally the route was to Bharatpur and back. The Heritage Motoring Club of India decided to revive the route and came up with the idea of Bharatpur Revisited but using the newly constructed multi-lane, elevated Yamuna Expressway instead of using the road Sher Shah built centuries ago. The destination was Bharatpur’s Laxmi Vilas Palace, once a royal abode but now a hotel. Around thirty vehicles were supposed to start on the route, flagged off by

Maharani Divya Singh of Bharatpur. Incessant overnight rains however meant cars like a wooden-bodied 1925 RR boat-tail Speedster stayed away. Getting out of Delhi is always a chore at any time except midnight perhaps and the start was delayed in order to allow cars from long distances to reach the starting point. The route took the cars across the border into the state of Uttar Pradesh and then onto the express way. Once on, it was a straight but sleep-inducing road till the Mathura exit 125km away. It’s a good thing that the toll plazas have services attached so the cars, drivers and other occupants get a break. After cutting through Mathura via its narrow, crowded streets it was back onto NH2 and then onto the Bharatpur road to Bharatpur, a road that is under patchwork repair. It wasn’t smooth sailing for everybody though, as minutes after

pre-war cars – a 1926 Fiat 514C Tourer, a 1932 Ford B Tourer and a 1935 Buick limousine – had no trouble tackling the route, especially the rough bits between the highway and the town. Thanks to the delayed start and

further delays on the road it was late afternoon by the time the cars got to Bharatpur. There would be no time for the scheduled bird sanctuary visit but hungry travellers fell upon the champagne lunch awaiting them. Later the same evening, after a cultural show the prizes were awarded and it did not come as a surprise to see Diljeet Titus’ silver 1935 Buick bagging the Most Popular Car of the rally. The return leg was a free run and was flagged off in the morning. After spending 2 hours negotiating small-town traffic, just as the cars got onto the express way for Delhi the Ford Galaxy’s dynamo died, the fear of the battery dying making the drive back to Delhi a bit more tense than it should have been.

hey say that the Formula One race track in Greater Noida, on the outskirts of New Delhi, is a place for those with a lunatic composition bent upon emulating Sebastian Vettel. But what about for those who want to emulate Dirty Harry on a fourwheeler, preferring slush, sand, grime and steep slopes to those pretty tarred straight roads? For them, there’s a new track being inaugurated soon, the first of its kind in the country. It’s the dream of a young entrepreneur Niivit Bhasin. At

his new off road track being built on the Greater Nodia Expressway, barely 15 to 20km from the Delhi border, a new experience is taking shape. Niivit Bhasin, who claims to be India’s youngest rallyist, is the boss of Hyperformance Motorsports, a company established in 2001 with a vision to enhance the appeal of Indian motorsports. His company aims to make lifestyle motoring and motorsports more accessible to ordinary folks, besides providing automotive solutions to car manufacturers / allied product and lubricant manufacturers and linking them with the motorsport enthusiasts.

www.carnstyle.com

OFF ROAD

Hailing from a business family with interests in automobile dealerships, petrol bunkers and lubricant workshops, Bhasin has now set his eyes on developing the 200 acres of prime property owned by his family on the Greater Noida Expressway. While this property is being developed to accommodate world class farm houses, Bhasin is keen to set aside 40 acres land for off-road activities. “This will be a permanent off-road track and the first of its kind in the country,” says Bhasin in an interview with Car N Style magazine. Big names like Land Rover and others have shown their interest in

www.carnstyle.com

being a part of this project. Some of them have already done a dry run of sorts to experience the thrill of off road driving. “Of the 40 acres of land being developed for off road activities, 22 acres is marsh lands. There are forests within this property and we shall maintain these forests roads without cementing it, as is stipulated by government rules,” says Bhasin. Bhasin promises that this track would be world class in terms of what it will have to offer. There would be slush for the 4X4s to test their mettle, 20ft to 50ft gradual inclines to test the ‘hill descent’ and ‘hill climb’ features, dusty and

slushy tracks to test traction control, et al. In short, there would be adventure in plenty for those keen to experience adventure in all its raw beauty! We had our own share of fun when we took the Tata Safari Storme and the Mercedes-Benz ML 350 on two separate days at the off road track. These are vehicles with their own set of technical features to handle off road tracks. As we thrashed these vehicles on the uneven surfaces, the slopes, the dusty terrains, the slush and the grime, we realised that off-road driving was so much more fun than trying to emulate Sebastian Vettel!

APRIL 2013 / 45

OFF ROAD

DAY ONE The first day it was the Tata Safari Storme, Tata’s flagship SUV with a bit more bang. Contrary to marketing the Storme as a ‘beast’, the looks have been tamed and the vehicle looks grown up now. The butch appeal of the safari has been ironed out and it looks classier. The tailgate no longer gets an exposed spare-wheel; instead it stays under the rear boot floor now. The interior quality is a letdown but there is enough space for five adults. The jump seats are best used by toddlers. But we are specifically here for what the ‘beast’ has to offer. At the heart is a new generation 2.2litre VARICOR engine that pumps out 138bhp of power at 4000rpm and maximum turning force of 320Nm at 2700rpm. The engine performance is

46 / APRIL 2013

much refined than the old Safari but feels strained when pushed hard. The 4X4 system is where this car shines. Transition from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive is done on the fly by turning a knob placed next to the gear lever. The 4L is a monster and is for really treacherous situations. Our run included a very soft sand bed, a rutted stretch and quiet deep slushy mud. The Storme lived up to its claims with flying colours. The vehicle was very composed on loose surface and only wet mud could unsettle it a bit. A situation did arise when the Storme nearly beached in extremely slippery wet, but pulled out with 4L engaged. We blame the tires which are more for tarmac performance than off-road. Overall the Storme is now a grown up SUV which can really get its boots dirty and pull you out of very difficult offroad circumstances.

OFF ROAD DAY TWO If Storme is a ‘beast’, the Mercedes Benz ML 350 CDI is a ‘monster’. This 2,175kg vehicle can touch 100kmph in 7.4seconds. ML feels just right anywhere and everywhere it goes. Whether it is the morning school run, office commute, an evening ballroom party, a weekend trip, or something that we did; play about on an off-road playground. At the first glance it may not look much different than the previous model but rest assured it is entirely new. It has been lightened for better performance and higher

www.carnstyle.com

fuel economy. The big Merc is tech laden with all possible gizmos and creature comforts expected from a vehicle in this bracket. The 2987cc V6 engine produces 254.7bhp of peak power at 4200rpm and maximum torque of 619Nm between 1,600-2,400rpm. Coupled with the 7-G Tronic gearbox the big Merc hits a top speed of 224kmph. Paddle shifters behind the steering wheel grant some control to the driver on the automatic gearbox but slow in response. The tyres surprised us as we expected the low profile Pirellis to slip on loose surfaces but they

performed brilliantly. The electronic power steering is very accurate and precise and gains apt weight at speed but is not communicative if you are looking for an involving drive. Thanks to the 4MATIC, ML pulls clean on all surfaces despite having one wheel in the air. Ground clearance is adequate and the nose can be further lifted for difficult terrain. The ABS system is quiet intrusive and cuts in early, but it can be excused considering the fact that it is for safety reasons. Overall Mercedes ML is a very satisfying vehicle. It is comfortable, quick on its heels and very capable.

o how’s the new car? I had just completed the drive of the Honda Amaze 1.5 litre diesel variant in the picturesque locale of Goa and the question was thrown at me from a lot of friends and those around me. “If it’s a Honda, it’s got to be good,” I said. But then this was the first diesel powertrain from Honda for the Indian market. A country so obsessed with Katrina Kaif’s curves, John Abraham’s muscles and everything diesel, I was pleasantly surprised by the new Honda Amaze. The car is an entry level sedan and

will take on the likes of Swift Dzire and the Toyota Etios in a market so dominated by diesel engines. The Amaze comes in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol 1.2 litre engine is the same that powers the Jazz and the Brio, so anyone who has driven these vehicles already knows how this engine performs. The petrol model will be offered in both manual and automatic. The diesel comes only in manual version. I spent all my time with the diesel variant and rightly so.... the whole world wants to know everything about the new Honda diesel engine. The one thing that goes against the diesel engine is the high noise levels it generates. But

in a country where shouting, barking, honking and yelling are a way of life, this engine is truly Indian! The car is 3990mm in length, 1680mm in width and is 1505mm tall with a wheel base of 2405mm. The diesel car has a turning radius of 4.7metre and a trunk space of 400litres. The 1498cc DOHC –DTEC engine based on Honda’s ‘Earth Dreams Technology’ comes with 16 valves and produces a maximum power of 98.6bhp@3600rpm and a torque of 200Nm@1750rpm. With an all aluminium cylinder head joined to an open deck engine block, it is the lightest engine among the engines

with similar torque configuration. The diesel car comes with a manual 5 speed transmission and claims a fuel efficiency of 25.8km per litre under standard conditions as per ARAI. Yippee! Is this not what an Indian loves to hear, besides those raunchy Hindi songs like “...chipka le Fevicol se....”? Well, now let’s get back to the car. It drives well and the power from the engine is extremely linear and it’s not that a massive burst of torque comes into play at a certain rpm. It’s smooth and picks up as you shift gears. An ultra low viscosity diesel engine oil has been developed by Honda that will be adding further pep to the

The dashboard is simple and smart with the plastic quality, perhaps, among the best in its class. ut of the entire range that Mini offers in India, the Cooper S Countryman became the eye candy. The Mini Countryman is a compact crossover SUV, and is the first such car of Mini with four doors. The car was officially launched at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show as the first Mini crossover SUV, this Mini has more passenger space, higher ground clearance and a bigger longer base. It also claims to be a proper five seat Mini. EXTERIOR: I took my own sweet time to check out the dual color Mini when it came to us, the Mini badge on the nose with a small hump between the two racing stripes is hard to miss. The big head lamps, grill, fog lamps and the air intakes are garnished with chrome. At the side, black fibre wheel arches are perfectly placed between the 8 spoke alloy wheels

at the bottom and side indicator cluster on top. Beyond that are door hung wing mirrors and chrome door handles. For those who enjoy weather, this car is fitted with a sunroof with small antenna beyond it, followed by a neat spoiler. At the rear there is a big Mini in the middle and ‘Cooper S’ badges at the side. There are two chrome finished exhaust pipes on the either side of the car decorated with neatly carved arches atop them. INTERIOR: Open the door and first thing your eyes will spot is ‘Mini Cooper S’ garnish on the door sill. Interior is mostly Coffey beige and plastic material which is used is brilliant surrounded by soft leather. The small leather covered steering has audio control and flappers attached to it and behind it is the rev counter. Middle of the dash is the big speedometer and infotainment cluster. At the back there is enough space for the passengers to accommodate easily with decent

top speed of 210kmph. Courtesy overboost the lag is not felt at all and the car responds instantly to the foot pressure on the accelerator pedal. You can shift gears in three different ways through flappers, triptronic or let the car do it on its own. The paddle shifters are not the usual right shift up and left shift down, you pull for up shifts and push for down shifts. The steering is

light initially but with speed you feel it getting heavy for better control at high speed. There is a sport mode available for enthusiastic drivers, which changes the performance of the car and exhaust noise. We are glad to report that the Mini is no longer a mini. It has enough space for four adults and their luggage for a short trip.

eneral Motors voyage started in India two decades ago with the known brand Opel. In 2003 General Motors tagged along with Chevrolet and produced a series of cars such as Cruze, Captiva, Beat and many more, all of which were received well by the Indian market and expects the same response from the entry level mid-size car, Sail sedan. However the big question is what makes this American doll different from the rest of the curvy Indian, German, Japanese, Korean and French automobiles on road.

EXTERIOR:

Sail comes in two variants, 1.3 litre diesel and 1.2 litre petrol. We drove the petrol one, this 1.2 litre petrol engine produces a maximum power of 85bhp at 6000rpm and a torque of 113Nm at 5000rpm and is mated with 5-speed manual transmission. The car picks up in the 1st and 2nd gear with a lethargic mood but push harder through the gears and one can feel the engine punch. Sail is equipped with a light steering and impressive suspension, which makes it an ideal car for city’s traffic and pot holes.

It is really hard to pick out the sedan from its hatch sibling, the Sail U-VA. Both cars are identical up to the B-pillar. The similar features consist of a two part grill in the front and fine lines on the sides. Similarity ends here, beyond the B pillar the car’s roof and doors are reshaped along with large rear windows and all new C-pillar, which neatly slopes down to a compact yet elegant boot. The boot consists of big triangular tail lamps and a decent loading

INTERIOR: Sail sedan offers decent passenger space. The dual dashboard is inspired by the Corvette. Knee room at the rear is good and the car’s added length provides a better recline angle. The rear seats also offer storage space underneath unlike any other car. Tall passengers may complain due to the lack of thigh support. The interior is beige with brown undertones and the plastic material was subtle but a little bland. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE:

he recent Lebanese food festival at Hyatt Regency Pune showcased unique preparations such as Tabbouleh, Basbousa and Baby Marrow Salad, among others. JYOTI BALANI spoke to Chef Mahmoud Al Kahwaji, sous chef of Cafe Arabesque at Park Hyatt Dubai, to know more about Lebanese cuisine, which is a combination of Middle Eastern and European influences.

Is this your first visit to India? Yes. I have always wanted to visit and explore India and, of course, taste the cuisine. Please tell me a little about how you started, how many years have you been in this profession? My father was a chef since he was 9 years old, later my brothers joined this profession. Being in an environment filled with chefs, my passion for cooking was natural. I have been in this profession for about 6-7 years now. Started with The Hilton, Dubai as a Commis chef for a year, then I moved to a Five Star Restaurant Al Arab. After spending a year sharpening my skills, I joined Grand Hyatt, Dubai. I stayed there for a year and then I was transferred to Park Hyatt, Dubai where I am currently working as a Sous Chef. Please tell me a little about Lebanese cuisine, how to

select the finest produce and what are your signature preparations? Lebanese cuisine is all about the fresh produce and flavors of the ingredients. The ethnicity of the cuisine plays a vital role in the popularity of the same. To select the finest produce, one must know the market. Seasonal availability of the products is also very important. The organic produce adds flavor to the dishes. My signature dish is Tabouleh. I love making it because of the “all-time-available-parsley and the crunchiness of the crushed wheat, onion and tomato along with the freshly chopped parsley. Please tell us a little about 6 popular preparations that you enjoy cooking most. Jordanian Mansaf (lamb with goat cheese sauce), Kabsa Djaj (chicken with tomato flavored rice), Samakeh Harra(Fish with walnut, tomato & garlic, Baba Ganouch

(smoky eggplant with vegetables and vinegar), Hummus (chickpeas ground with tahina paste, garlic and lemon), Seafood Lasagne (pasta with fresh sea bass/ cod and white sauce) and Beef Stroganoff (beef with creamy veal jus and green peppers).

Do you think events and food festivals are great solutions to present your cuisine to an international audience? Absolutely. It even prompts the local consumer to try something new.

Do you think Lebanese cuisine has the scope to be a popular cuisine in India? Indian cuisine is rich in flavors and aromas; same is the case with Lebanese cuisine. The meats are similarly marinated and kept over-night to attain rich flavors and grilled later on charcoal. Most of the dishes have spices similar to Indian cuisine.

Has you ever cooked for celebrities? Yes, for the Prime Minister of Iraq. According to you what is the best way to promote a cuisine in a new country? By creating awareness and keeping it simple.

What is the essence of Lebanese cooking? The use of excellent olive oil and charcoal flavor imparted to meats. Have you eaten and cooked Indian food? Yes, my favorite dishes are chicken korma, chicken biryani and garlic naan. Do you travel often to train people all over the world? Is it a challenge to introduce something new in a country which is not familiar with Lebanese cuisine? Yes, I do, but a proper planning and time is required to spread the word.

NUMEROLOGY

Numerological Preparations: For the Number 8 Concept and report: Jyoti Balani Food and location courtesy: Le Royce, Pune Numerology as we all know is used to determine an individual’s personality, strengths and talents, obstacles, inner needs, emotional reactions and ways of dealing with others. These days a lot of people use numerology to examine their life, take advantage of unexplored opportunities, or simply figure out where to go next. But few people are aware there is a connection between food and numerology as well. Every number has both good as well as bad qualities. People associated with a particular number are more likely to suffer from a sickness owing to the ill effects connected with their numbers; which is why numerologists recommend foods that help in curing that particular weakness. We consulted prominent numerologist Swetta Jumaani and she came up with a list of ingredients suitable to each number starting from number 1. These ingredients were then passed onto talented chefs from Pune to create 6 unique recipes using their creativity and imagination. Needless to say the results were amazing and are here for all to see and try out these recipes.

Number 8: Destiny’s Child People born on the 8th, 17th, and 26th in any month are termed as Number 8 personalities, ruled by the planet Saturn. The number 8 rules Capricorns, Aquarians and Librans too. Saturn is usually a planet which take trials and tribulations after which rewards the person amply. Usually the first half of a number 8 is associated with struggle. The second half however compensates for the first. Sometimes it is vice versa. With the struggle, Saturn also gifts with will power and determination. Unless born in a wealthy family, number 8 personalities usually have to work a little harder than usual to get what they deserve. Number 8 ruled by Saturn, are often misunderstood and accused for things they never committed. The best of lawyers and doctors do not understand them. They must therefore avoid partnerships and litigation, as they would find others at variance with their nature. Number 8 people will find the numbers of “fours”, and “eight” drawn toward them and playing an important role in all their affairs, and dates such as 4th, 8th, 13th, 17th, 22nd, 26th and 31st or any numbers that total up to the root of 4 and 8. They must avoid these dates and numbers. Raveena Tandon, Shilpa

Swetta Jumaani inaugurated her office in Pune on the 6th of July 2003. She created major ripples when her very first prediction on August 24 2003, regarding the effects of the planet Mars as it moves closer to the earth, rang true word by word. FLAVOURSOME BARBEQUE NATION

The ‘nation’ without tips Bengali ex-colleague and friend called me up after many months and knowing me as a foodie with a craving for seafood, she asked if I could suggest her a place for great non-Bengali style fish! I retorted: “Have you gone bonkers? I have a weakness for Bengali fish and can recommend a few places for it. You are asking a Punjabi to suggest you a place for some great seafood?” “Yes, I am,” she said curtly. I couldn’t resist telling her about my experience at Barbeque Nation restaurant at Jangpura Extension a week earlier. The restaurant specialises in great barbecue and serves it temptingly on table top grill on skewers. An eclectic selection of vegetarian and nonvegetarian kebabs and tikkas arrives swiftly at your table within minutes after the welcome drink. Although the seafood section is limited in range, the unlimited supply of delectable ‘surmai’ (seer) boneless fish and tandoori crimson prawns more than makes up for it. The restaurant’s soul rests in

www.carnstyle.com

the portable barbecue grill placed inside the table and is replete with skewers with all sorts of stuff that includes prawns, fish, chicken, mutton, mushroom, paneer, various kebabs and vegetarian selections - a concept it claims to have bestowed in this country BBQN (as it is affectionately called) offers a wide range of cuisines. The starters range from Oriental to Mediterranean fare. The vegetarian grilled items include Schezwan grilled vegetables, paneer kali mirch, Italian mushroom and crispy tandoori aloo (served with Cajun mayonnaise). The nonvegetarian delicacies include mint prawns, parsley fish, mutton Hyderabadi seekh kebab and angara tangdi. On the table are a choice of marinades and a variety of chutneys and dips. Baste the

starters with your favorite marinade. The barbecue is its raison d’être. As an indication to stop the incessant supply on the skewers at your table make sure to put down the BBQN flag on your table. The décor is soothing and with a lot of wood and exposed brick walls. The seating is comfortable to dine and relax. The place is perfect to be with friends or family. The scrumptious food and the smoked flavor from the grill create a wonderful aroma. A pleasant ambience makes you feel special at the Barbeque Nation at Jangpura Extension. A place where you may not even need to go beyond the starters! In contrast, you can give a miss to the average and spicy main-course! Make sure to book in advance as the place is packed, no matter which branch. A food connoisseur Rashi Oberoi explains: “Even a good meal served with the utmost hospitality is just the thing to make your outing special. Here even your smallest wish becomes their command. My husband and I are not spicy food eaters and observing this the

service people immediately served out bland kebabs which were even more scrumptious than the spice marinades. The chef personally took us around explaining the dishes. The course is unlimited semi cooked veg/ non-veg kebabs that are cooked and warmed on a mini grill placed on your table, followed by main course and desserts on a buffet spread, that is, if you can make it up to that. Must go for it! ” In 2006 Sayaji Hotels Ltd established the first Barbeque Nation outlet in Mumbai. The group has plans to open chain of restaurants across all major Indian cities. After the success of the restaurant in Mumbai, BBQN branched out in Bangalore and Hyderabad in year 2007. It now has outlets at Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, New Delhi, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Chennai and in Chandigarh. Though the menu is pre-fix here, the variety in starters and maincourse is rotated daily, so your buffet experience will be delightfully new each time you visit the BBQN. In case you have a BBQN favourite, make

FLAVOURSOME sure to confirm before walking in for the dine-in, else you will be taken aback. The selection off the grill on the day of my visit to BBQN were tandoori prawns, Oriental grill fish, mutton gillafi seek, murgh achari tikka, Thai grill vegetables, paneer achari tikka, pesto mushroom, sweet and spicy tapioca with pineapple, and khoya khubani kebab. The two soups that I tried were Morocco harira (veg soup) and murgh pudina shorba, the latter being more flavourful. The main course comprised laal maas, dum ka murgh, mustard fish, chicken dum biryani, choliya te paneer, Rajasthani gatta curry, plain rice, aloo capsicum, nargisi kofta curry, assorted vegetables in chilli plum sauce, chilli garlic noodles, dal makhani, corn gobi ki tehri and veg biryani. A range of sumptuous desserts followed the lavish buffet - apple cinnamon cheese cake, litchi orange gateaux, walnut brownie, chocolate roll, rajbhog, phirnee, gulab jamun, butterscotch and strawberry icecream along with cut fruits. Here’s a note of caution. If you like

to eat without a pompous show of celebration for your special occasion, make sure you keep it discreet from the manager/staff. A whiff of it and you will have a bunch of waiters rallying around you clapping and shouting greetings that are loud enough to give you a heart attack. The live band playing soft vocals makes your experience special here in any case. The restaurant offers innovative schemes on dining like early bird discount of 150 per head from 7:007:30pm Wednesday through Sunday. Special buffet rates are applicable depending upon buffet timing and the day of the week. The choice of buffet ranges from 600 (vegetarian) to 700 (non-vegetarian). Buffet includes a welcome drink that could also be a pint beer. The bar comprises most leading liquor brands that are reasonably priced. My lunch here was all the more delightful due to an efficient and extremely courteous service by the waiter-in-charge at my table. When I offered him the tip, he pointed smilingly towards his broach that read No Tips Please!
