ar N Style has grown in style and stature. It’s no more a complimentary magazine that used to be tagged along with Motown India every month. The two have now chosen their distinct paths. Beginning August 2012, Car N Style is an entity to be reckoned with.

It’s a magazine on lifestyle, primarily focused on automobiles. Travel and gadgets form the other critical parts of the magazine. Unlike the existing automobile magazines, Car N Style will not be oriented towards male readers. Rather, it will appeal to both girls and boys, young and old. The reports are a mix of interesting news and views. We have two eminent names in the motoring world, R.K. Dhawan (Tutu) and Murad Ali Baig, writing for us. Both are veterans in the field of automotive journalism and have several decades of experience in writing on motoring.

We start the first standalone issue of Car N Style with a feature on the Polaris Victory motorcycle.

We asked the company’s Managing Director, Pankaj Dubey, to ride the bike. Being a great sport, he met us in the wee hours of the morning outside his Delhi dealership and patiently rode the bike on long stretches for our senior cameraman Mohd. Nasir to capture him while riding the monstrous bike. We have also smartly reviewed a whole lot of vehicles in a rather easy manner for our readers.

We drove the new Renault Duster from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu to Munnar in Kerala and came back impressed. The BMW 650i convertible, which we reviewed, left us spellbound. Two-wheelers like the Bajaj Pulsar 200NS, the Honda Dream Yuga, the Hero MotoCorp Maestro and the Piaggio Vespa have also been reviewed.

There is also a lot on the F1 races. Interesting vehicle launches too have been covered. Travel reports, articles on cuisine and news from the gadgets and lifestyle world fill up rest of the pages.

26. Red Bull X-Fighters Jams makes Indian debut Red Bull X-Fighters Jams finally arrived in India and put a display at Rajpath. The event was also a tribute to Haryana Olympic Association and its athletes who are preparing for the Summer Olympics in London. Brought to India in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Red Bull X Fighters Jams is considered a build up to the World Series.

t is interesting to see the affordable SUV segment evolving in the country.

For long we had the Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari dominating this space. But with the coming in of the Renault Duster, things are going to change rapidly. The Scorpio, as we all know, has been doing exceedingly well for the Mahindras. The Safari has its own niche market and its own niche production. With the more contemporary looking Duster in the market, it is time for the competitors to spruce up their products in terms of styling and features.

For the Tatas especially, it is time to put its act together with the Safari. The Duster has no doubt set a new benchmark in this segment.

Another interesting observation I need to make is the way our SUV market is

going. A blue blooded SUV should ideally come with a four wheel drive. But in India, that continues to be an option. A Scorpio 4X4 is not available off the shelf. So it takes about 3 to 4 months before you get a 4x4 Scorpio. Around 95pc of SUV owners presumably do not even know what a 4x4 wheel drive is and also when to deploy this if their vehicle has one. The typical Indian mindset is to have an SUV type looking vehicle which looks rugged and is easy on the pocket. It should also be comfortable to drive. People above the age of 45 start looking for comfort getting into a car and getting out of a car, more so with Indian women drivers. The Duster fits just right to the demands of the Indian drivers. The Duster has the features, the looks and the platform for a 4x4 and yet does not actually incorporate a 4x4 and they don’t even plan to get a 4x4 or an automatic in the near future.

Kudos to them for bringing out a vehicle fitted with a lot of practical features. One must not forget that Renault has been long known

for supplying engines to the F1 winners.

As for the Duster, they have given a light monocoque body which no company in India has so far been able to produce for any SUV in India. The monocoque body has been given in order to reduce the weight of the shell. They have also given two different options of engines. An 85bhp engine version can be bought if you want your driver to drive the vehicle, the more powerful 110bhp can be bought if you want to drive the machine yourself.

They have also given you a number of gears to play around with, so you are never running short of power. Technology has now taken over and they have been able to do a phenomenal job. They have given you a wide track, a low profile of the vehicle, the ground clearance is also very good at 8 inches plus, the head room has been decreased and the centre of gravity has been lowered and they have made the same machine more balanced. It is not monstrous and doesn’t have a sway.

Apart from this, they have also given you different trims as per your requirements.

You could not have asked for more!!

Those days are gone when India was identified as a small car hub. Today, the economy has changed and 90 pc of the automobile users want to upgrade themselves to bigger vehicles. Today the Maruti 800s and the Altos are on the dying mission as the B segment is getting augmented.

ven if one discounts the fact that about 90pc of drivers are men, men account for over 99pc of India’s traffic accidents.

Women, therefore, obviously do not deserve the widely held opinion that they are a danger on the road...although some people might quibble that many of the accidents by men were triggered by distraction from ladies.

Ian Fleming was close to the mark when he had James Bond saying that women were much more careful drivers than men when they were driving alone...but not when they had company because women needed eye contact for affirmation of what they were saying. They were, therefore, dangerous if there was another lady sitting beside the driver... and positively hazardous if there were ladies sitting in the rear.

On the whole, women are much more cautious and do not take the daring risks that their macho male counterparts seem to so enjoy. They hate the prospect of accidents and the agony of the subsequent street-side arguments, police reports, etc.

Women are terrified when their men start accelerating behind a lumbering truck, watching a fast approaching bus and then whizz through a brief traffic gap with just inches to spare. Shrieks, complaints, mockery and angry words usually follow.

Men, similarly, find it very irritating that

women drivers, while overtaking, will wait ages till the road ahead is absolutely clear and will then leave a wide space between them and the vehicle being overtaken with several abortive tries before succeeding.

The mounting frustration of the male passenger, furiously pressing imaginary accelerators and brakes, often also ends in mockery and anger.

Fast driving does, however, require intense concentration. Sterling Moss, one of the world’s greatest race drivers, was very slow and cautious off the racing

circuit. He drove in a defensive cocoon of total concentration fully aware of the risks in every direction. Most women are just not that interested in driving. They have many other priorities with families, home, romance, social life, clothes, vanity, etc. Few have that male ability to forget everything else and focus upon a dirty old road.

The focussed male driver can, however,

be so focussed upon the road that he often forgets the exact route to the destination. If he is an egotist, he may refuse advice or ask someone for directions. Women sometimes have an uncanny sense of direction.

Women can, however, be shameless frauds.

Many, who are quite capable of the simple chore of changing a tyre, will brilliantly play the role of being helpless and incompetent until some male sucker arrives to save the damsel in distress.

The male myth, therefore, has the woman driver as indecisive, fickle, giddy and unpredictable while they are fast, sure, confident and decisive. The female myth has men being rough, pushy, dangerous, insensitive and foolish while they are cool and careful.

For many men their car is an extension of the vision of their own manhood. Their car is a public statement of his lifestyle aspirations and his driving is an extension of his ego.

Of all his possessions, the car alone allows a man a few moments to dream that he is James Bond, Rambo or the solitary hero of his dreams. For most women, a car is just a useful set of wheels. No wonder, many women consider their husband’s car as his second wife. Under their breaths, men mutter that the car is a wife that does not mock, complain or talk back.

Mercedes-Benz India unveils B class sports tourer

Nasir Back home in Germany it’s called the compact sports tourer, it’s even referred to as a sporty family car for the young, and in India it would be sold as a sports tourer. This one’s sporty, for sure. I drove the Mercedes B-Class car on the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, India’s one and only F1 circuit. At 4,359mm in length it’s a tad smaller than the Audi Q3 which is at 4,385mm. The B-Class dimensions stand at 4,359mm length, 1,786mm width and 1,557mm height. The Q3 LxWxH dimensions stand at 4,385mm x 2,019mm x 1,608mm. As for the BMW X1, the dimensions are 4,464mm x 2,044mm x 1,545mm.

than a Honda City which has a length of 4,440mm. But it’s a car meant not for ordinary mortals. It’s a luxury brand with a host of technological features that could put to shame an ordinary Indian car. This new B-Class from Mercedes Benz India would be launched around the festive season beginning September 2012 in the sport tourer segment. Price-wise it would be in a segment where the X1 and Q3 currently rein.

Mercedes claims that the new B-Class combines sportiness, refinement and practicality with a youth oriented and aggressive design language. Although it does fall in the price bracket of the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3, it does not fall in the

same category as either of them. Mercedes plans to launch it between September and November of this year and the car will initially be priced around the 25 lakh mark. The B-Class has a host of features to justify that price tag though – 7G Dual Clutch Transmission along with an optional manual transmission, ESP, PRE-SAFE, Attention Assist, and radar based Collision Prevention Assist in conjunction with Adaptive Brake Assist. Initially, the B-Class will be brought in as CBUs but, according to Peter Honegg, MD and CEO, MercedesBenz India, “A CKD is definitely on the cards in the future. Otherwise we will not be able to recover our costs.” The only thing Merc seems to be scratching its head

about is the choice of engines that will be offered. The company has a range of engines for the B-Class in the international market but none designed for us Indians. Debashis Mitra, Director, Sales & Marketing of the company said that the engines will be decided soon. Merc plans to begin with petrol engines and introduce diesel motors only later.

heartthrob Genelia D’Souza and former VJ Gaurav Kapoor. The event saw almost the whole media fraternity turn out in full force to witness and test drive this exciting new car.

The car itself has a premium feel to it from the inside, with Merc’s fantastic build quality visible throughout. The rear seats though, were not as spacious as the car seems to show from outside. Same was the case with the boot space. Mind you, neither the rear seating area nor the boot space was small by any measure; but in a car of this size a little more was expected.

Talking about the initial impressions, apart from engine characteristics (because they’re going to bring in new ones), the

ride seemed fantastic, the braking was beyond flaw and the driving position was perfectly comfortable for me (I’m 5’7” so that should be comfortable for you too, Mr. Average Indian). The car was impressive, but 25 lakh impressive? Too early to comment!

Ferrari’s Alonso wins German GP

Hockenheim (Germany): Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso produced another amazing drive to take his third win of the season to extend his lead to over 30 points in the Drivers’ championship, over his closest rival, Mark Webber, who crossed the line down in eighth place. Felipe Massa had another unlucky race, which began with a collision soon after the start that forced him to pit for a new nose. The Brazilian rejoined twenty first and managed to finish the race in twelfth spot. Alonso had a very difficult race, but managed to keep the lead throughout: he made a rocket-like start after which the Spaniard perfectly managed the gap over first Vettel in the Red Bull and then Button in the McLaren, the time always staying around the one second mark.

With this victory, Alonso has become the first three-time winner of 2012. Alonso was under consistent pressure, first from

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and later from McLaren’s Jenson Button, both of whom got within less than a second of the Ferrari at times.

However, the manner in which Vettel passed Button going into the hairpin on the 66th lap was subsequently investigated by the race stewards as he went outside the track limits. The stewards eventually decided in Button’s favour and handed Vettel a 20-second time penalty, which moved the German down into fifth in the race results and promoted Button into second, Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen into third and Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi into fourth.

The next round of the championship takes place at the Hungaroring, in Hungary, before the usual summer break begins.

According to a Ferrari release, the F1 dictionary is beginning to run out of superlatives to describe Fernando Alonso’s performances this season, so let’s

describe his win in German Grand Prix, as superlative! Having taken pole in the rain the previous day, keeping the advantage through 67 dry laps on the final day was never a foregone conclusion, but fighting off intense pressure, the Ferrari man actually led from start to finish to record his third win of the season. His team-mate Felipe Massa was less fortunate: starting in the always risky mid-field, the Brazilian was involved in an accident that meant he had to make an immediate visit to pit lane, on the opening lap, to change the nose on the F2012. He worked his way back up to twelfth at the flag. For his third German GP win, Alonso was joined on the podium

by Sebastian Vettel, second for Red Bull and Jenson Button, third in the McLaren.

However, later events would prove that Mr. Vettel had finished lower down than he thought and that Button was back in second place!

Mark Webber wins at Silverstone It was a field day for Red Bull Renault team at the British Grand Prix on July 8, 2012 as two of its drivers made it to the podium.

While the eternal follower Mark Webber won the race, his more successful team mate and last year’s title winner Sebastian Vettel came third. For Red Bull, it was more than just a simple win as its factory is a just a few miles away from the Silverstone circuit in London at Milton Keynes.

While Webber made it to the first position, Spanish racer Fernando Alonso came second. Michael Schumacher who started third was unfortunately beaten

by Vettel. As for India, Nico Hulkenberg of Force India came in 12th. Narain Karthikeyan of HRT came in 21st in the race.

The Australian’s win, his second at Silverstone, brings the Red Bull Racing – Renault partnership’s tally of victories to 30, while edging Renault’s total wins in Formula 1 to 146. Webber’s Red Bull Racing team-mate Sebastian Vettel gave the team a double podium, finishing in third position.

An F1 race in London’s bustling thoroughfare?

Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One group, said, “The idea of an F1 streetrace in London is something I have had for many years. It would be magnificent. A couple of years ago we came very close to an agreement with the City of Westminster and The Mayor’s office but we ran into the small problem of cost. A few years back over half a million people turned-up to watch F1 cars parading through the streets of the capital. The public’s appetite for a London Grand Prix is huge as I am sure it is with the F1 teams and sponsors.”

Lewis and Jenson have been extensively consulted in the development of the detail for the 14 corner, 5.1km circuit which features a start grid on The Mall, a 192mph Santander straight in the run up to Buckingham Palace and with perhaps one of the most audacious corners anywhere on the sport’s twenty race global calendar, the London Grand Prix route circuit will steer 24 cars from Trafalgar Square into Admiralty Arch. Conceived as a night race, the lifelike quality of the CGI includes a driver perspective from the cockpit of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-27 F1 car as it races through the streets of London, making for compelling viewing.

Deepika endorses Yamaha Ray scooter Gearless scooters have been hitching a ride with Bollywood’s pretty faces for quite some time with many leading actresses endorsing various brands. For instance, Priyanka Chopra endorses the Hero MotoCorp Pleasure while Anushka Sharma endorses the TVS Scooty Pep, and so does Kareena Kapoor for Mahindra’s scooter range. Taking a cue from its competitor, Deepika Padukone has been roped in as the brand ambassador of the Yamaha Ray. Targeted at the fairer sex, the all-new Scooter comes with relatively smaller dimensions than many male-centric scooters.

Even though Yamaha did not reveal the technical speciation, it is widely speculated that it will get 125cc engine. There have not been any revelations on the pricing front, but it is estimated to be priced between 45,000- 50,000.

As per the deal, Deepika will make appearances in commercials which are already lined up. The bubbly and active image of the actress will complement the sporty and stylish scooter that Yamaha has to offer to its female customers which will primarily be under the age of 24 years. This visual connection will provide appropriate value addition to the brand and will bring the product alive onscreen.

‘Icons of Luxury’ show by Volvo Cars As a prelude to the Lakme Fashion Week, Volvo cars showcased a few of Ritu Beri’s collection at an event held in New Delhi. Beri’s collection brings to life Volvo’s philosophy – “Designed Around You” and draws inspiration from the quintessential fashion icon – Marilyn Monroe. Her belief there is a little bit of Marilyn in every woman is a perfect match with what Volvo Car stands for – timeless luxury.

TBM provides round-the-clock security to two-wheelers, and immobilises the bike in the event of a theft, enabled by a simple SMS from the owner. This comes in the wake of an alarming increase in two-wheeler thefts witnessed in the recent past. With TBM, twowheeler owners will be able to immobilise the vehicle, i.e. cease the running of the twowheeler, making it difficult for the thief to take the vehicle any further on his own. iTrans has tied up with Vodafone and Arrow Electronics for the development and deployment of TBM.

Renault DUSTER SUV at 7.91 lakh In its bid to take on homegrown rivals like Tata Safari & Mahindra Scorpio, Renault India has launched its mid-sized sports utility vehicle (SUV) Duster at an introductory price, ranging between 7.19 lakh and 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). To be available in petrol and diesel options, the 5-seater vehicle will be manufactured in Chennai with 60 pc localisation in the initial phase going up to 80-85pc later. India will be the fifth country globally to produce the Duster after Brazil, Russia, Romania, and Turkey.

GM India brings in tuned up Cruze General Motor India has launched the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze D-segment sedan that is equipped with a brand new FAM Z-Series turbo diesel engine. The D-segment sedan was unveiled at a ceremony in New Delhi presided over by Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India.

The technically-upgraded Cruze is powered by a 2.0-litre engine that generates 165Bhp of peak power at 3,800 rpm and 380 Nm of maximum torque at 2,000 rpm. It features a high-performance common rail fuel injection system and advanced electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) with intercooler. The engine also gets a six speed manual gearbox replacing the five speed manual.

Three variants – the LT and LTZ with

GM’s next-generation six-speed manual transmission and the LTZ with a 6-speed automatic transmission – are being offered in seven exterior colours. The new Cruze goes on sale at Chevrolet dealers across India starting 27th June’12. The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze prices are as follows: LT: 13.85 lakh, LTZ: 14.77 lakh and LTZ Automatic: 15.57 lakh. The car is more than 60 pc localised with its engines imported from South Korea.

However, the company has not done any cosmetic facelift (showcased at 2012 Busan Motor Show) and is speculated to be a year away. The interiors of the Cruze too remain unchanged for the moment apart from Passive Entry, Passive Start with Push button start/stop.

Round 2 of 9th JK Tyre Rotax Max National Karting Championship concludes began with Dhruv Mohite (Team Mohites Racing) and Krishnaraj Mahadik (Team Rayo Racing) sharing the pole for the Pre-final. As the day preceded Kush Maini (Team Maini Racing) proved his mettle by finishing first Round 2 of the 9th JK Tyre Rotax Max National Karting Championship concluded at the Kart Center, Lahari Resort in Hyderabad. The overcast skies and lower temperatures offered the perfect racing weather and the rains kept away too offering a nice dry track. These conditions allowed the racers to shed the cautious approach from the previous day allowing them to go out full throttle in the races that mattered – the Pre-final and Final.

The Micro Max category which was the most closely contested race in Round 1 was dominated by the only girl in the championship - Mira Erda (Team Maini Racing). A stellar performance in the pre-final got her the pole for the final, but a technical infringement meant she started the race from the back of the grid. However she managed to clear the drivers in front of her in the first lap, and overtook the leader Pradyumn Danigod (Team Mohites Racing) in lap two. She managed to hold onto the lead right till the end winning with a margin of over 3 seconds with a best lap time of the race at 33.594 seconds. HB Phaneesh (Team Mohites Racing) who had a minor incident during Round 1 of the championship made a great comeback to finish third at the end of Round 2.

The best action of the race was reserved for the last lap when Nayan managed to sneak in front of Kush at the second turn, but not before a brilliant move by Kush at the last corner got him back in the first place which he held on to on the last straight all the way to the chequered flag beating Nayan by a mere 0.098 seconds. Arya Gandhi (Team Rayo Racing) who started the race from last position raced exceedingly well to finish a respectable third in the Final race.

The race weekend in the Senior Max category was all about defending champion Chittesh Mandody (Team Mohites Racing), he dominated the proceedings and finished on top right from Qualifying to the final race. While

Anshuan Chatterjee (Team Rayo Racing) did give Chittesh a run for his money in the Final, he got stuck behind a backmarker to lose precious time finishing second.

The performance of the day also came in the same race by Amey Bafna (Team Rayo Racing), not having finished the pre-final due to a mechanical failure, Amey started at the back of the grid in the final race where he overtook 14 other drivers to finish third with a best lap time of 30:039 seconds.

The winners were awarded the trophies and medal by one of India’s top racers Armaan Ebrahim who was all praises for the young drivers and had a few words of encouragement for them. Bugatti Veyron More than 1,85,000 spectators attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this year. They were treated to many exceptional sights and moments. For the first time The Festival of Speed was attended by two of the greatest names in Formula 1 racing – reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel and previous champion, Alain Prost. Their presence in Goodwood made it worth for many motor sport enthusiasts to flock to the show. Adding in over 120 other motor racing heroes; from Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, to Emerson Fittipaldi and Kenny Roberts, made the event all the more memorable.

For the last few months it has been on display at the Polaris dealership in New Delhi on the MG road. The dealership is owned by Sandeep Bansil, an auto enthusiast and a man in love with off-road adventures.

Sandeep Bansil was up and ready to greet Dubey at the dealership in the morning of the ride. He is primarily a builder and developer. But his life has been all about off-road adventure.

rom the land of windmills in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu to the tea gardens of Munnar in Kerala is a distance of more than 160km. Cutting through some extremely scenic spots of South India, we glided on the roads with the wind beneath our wings. Such was the feeling driving the new Renault Duster diesel SUV. As we wound our way through miles of tea gardens in Munnar, the experience was breathtakingly

Wrong. Wah Duster! Absolutely right!

Being among the privileged few to drive the Renault Duster from Coimbatore to Munnar, I got the solid feel of the vehicle through winding roads and some terribly rough patches.

The Duster will deďŹ nitely emerge as the clear leader in a segment dominated by Mahindra Scorpio and in a small way, the Tata Safari. I am basing my judgement purely on factors like ride, handling,

performance, styling and affordability of the vehicle. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contemporary, no doubt, but extremely affordable.

The Duster comes in both petrol and diesel versions. The diesel again comes with two different power specs, one producing 85 bhp of power and the other producing 110bhp of power. While the two different diesel versions come in three variants each (RXE, RXL , RXL (O)/ RXL RXZ RXZ (O) respectively) , the petrol version comes with two variants RXE

SNAPSHOT REVIEW and RXL. That makes it a total of 8 variants to choose from! For the drive a fleet of 110bhp Dusters were available in different trim levels. I got my hands on a RXL variant.

Just before the start of the drive, Rajiv Mitra, Renault India Vice President, Public Affairs and Communication noted that each of the journalists had the liberty of exchanging the vehicles enroute among themselves. His advice fell on deaf ears.

Once you grab a Duster, it’s very unlikely that you give it up easily. The difference between an RXL and RXZ is naught when it comes to performance. It’s the fit and finish that is different. The RXZ has a dash of chrome satin on the exterior while the interiors are a bit classier in the RXZ. It’s got a leather wrapped steering wheel, premium beige seat fabric upholstery, leather and chrome gear knob finish and chrome on the inside door handle finish. It’s

a tad heavier too at 1,781kg compared to 1,758kg of GVW of the RXL. The RXZ also comes with 16 inch alloy wheels while the RXL comes with 16 inches steel wheel which again is endearing to look at.

The drive that took us out of Coimbatore past a large number of windmills was comfortable. Even though these vehicles do not come with a 4X4 option, we did a bit of off-roading near the windmills.

The large 215/65 R16 tyres went over the uneven grounds with absolute ease. The high ground clearance (205mm) of the vehicle also helped it go over mounds of the uneven track.

The 1.5 litre K9K common rail direct injection diesel engine produces 110bhp of power@3900rpm and an amazing torque of 248Nm@2250rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Duster is not alarmingly monstrous

in size, yet it offers adequate space for five adults to sit comfortably. The boot space is cavernous. There is ample head and leg room, thanks to the vehicle’s long wheelbase of 2,673mm. The rear seats, once folded increases the carrying capacity to 1,064 litre. The boot otherwise has a capacity of 475 litre allowing enough luggage to be carried for a weekend getaway with a parcel tray specially designed for India.

On hindsight, the vehicle is unlikely to be used in the commercial taxi segment; rather it would be a delight for individual buyers.

The vehicle is easy to drive and handle. It’s got a sedan-like stance when it comes to ride and handling, with body roll well under control. Going by Renault’s motto – ‘Drive the Change’, this new Duster is bound to bring about a great change in the Indian SUV segment.

The wheel arches too look muscular yet elegant. But since the vehicle is so easy and comfortable to drive, it is bound to appeal to both men and women drivers. No other SUV in its category offers such a luxury. It

can be a daily commute vehicle as well as a vehicle to take out for long drives.

On the safety front too, the Duster boasts of a series of interesting features. The Renault Duster is loaded with active and passive safety features like dual airbags for the driver and passenger, ABS, EBD with Brake Assist and a monocoque body with side impact beams. The vehicle is currently offered at an introductory price. Go grab it before it gets uncomfortably expensive.

VERDICT The Renault Duster is an SUV that’s gentle to drive. Easy to manoeuvre in crowded as well as open roads, it’s more sedan-like in its handling. Yet, despite the comfort it offers, it does not compromise on its SUV characteristics, especially when it comes to its off-road capabilities. In its segment, the Duster is the best vehicle on offer in India.

Good quality ride and handling. Because of its monocoque frame, it offers high levels of comfort for the passengers.

A 4x4 version should have been an option available. A vehicle of such dimensions deserves it.

And she did that in full public view and the crowd stood there breathless and spell bound! Open-top cars are not a hit in India at all. The super rich own them

and drive around when the weather is fair.

But then there are the flies and the dust to dodge. Going topless may be a seductive proposal, but then you have got to brave the odds that come your way in form of dust and insects of all shapes and sizes in the country.

There is no arguing that this premium convertible 2+2-seater comes with a very efficient engine, an advanced chassis

technology and some very innovative comfort, infotainment and safety features.

The classic soft-top roof comes in a customary “fin” design. The car exudes a powerful and bold exterior design with a sweeping bonnet and cosy passenger compartment. The car takes off like a rocket. The only time I could drive it meaningfully was at the break of dawn when men and their machines were off the

road. All this car requires is barrel, loads of fuel and unending stretches of road.

At bizarre speeds, the fuel consumption is not an easy figure to digest. The car comes with Dynamic Driving Control, which allows drivers to choose their own suspension settings, while the Adaptive Drive system is available as an option with electrically controlled dampers and roll stabilisation. In addition to the standard-

fitted electromechanical power steering, another unique feature in this segment is the optional Integral Active Steering system. The large, slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille – its “shark nose” – gives the car a typical BMW purposeful look.

The car seats four people. But it’s the front seats that have a distinct advantage.

system’s Control Display, the central air vents and the controls for the audio system and air conditioning. They are all angled slightly towards the driver. Added to which, the gear-shift lever and the buttons for the parking brake, roof operation and Dynamic Driving Control are located on a surface that opens out towards the driver and is set lower than the front passenger side of the centre console. There you go, is it not prudent to be driving this car?

The convertible comes with an electrically powered soft-top roof with “fin” architecture. The fins project out along the flanks of the car into its rear section, accentuating the car’s gracefully sweeping silhouette. The automatic opening and closing operation for the roof is activated as standard using a button on the centre console. The Comfort Access option allows the process to be initiated using the remote control button on the car key. The opening the roof takes 21 seconds, the closing process 24 seconds. Both operations can be activated while on the move at speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Its similarly extended wheelbase now stretches to 2,855 millimetres. The car has also grown by 39 millimetres in width, and now measures 1,894 millimetres across, while 9 millimetres have been shaved off its height (1,365 mm) We felt that the head room at the rear was a tad short of comfort, especially when the soft top was shifting positions.

The convertible also boasts of 300 litres of boot space with the roof open, with the roof closed, the variable soft-top stowage compartment can be folded up in a single movement to increase boot capacity to 350 litres.

The car comes with a host of safety features. It’s got a plethora of electronics that control everything from seats, to the roof to the driving. As soon as the central safety electronics register a danger of the

car rolling over, the pyrotechnic release mechanism is activated, at which point the high-strength aluminium bars rise up from their rest position in a fraction of a second.

The 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine in the 650i convertible develops a maximum 407bhp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm, a peak torque of 600Nm between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. It completes the race from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and the engine electronics eventually step in to halt acceleration at 250 km/h.

gears, one can also change gears manually using shift paddles on the steering wheel. For fuel efficiency, the car is also equipped with auto startstop function. When the driver draws to a standstill at junctions or in a traffic jam the engine is automatically switched off. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the engine starts up again. If the driver is using the Auto Hold function, the engine is restarted when the accelerator is depressed.

Dynamic Driving Control allows a choice of suspension settings. The driver can make his own choice of suspension settings in Comfort +, (Comfort), Sport and Sport+ modes using a button on the centre console.

The car is fitted with 19-inch light-alloy wheels and has runflat tyres and a runflat indicator.

As the sun began to climb and the traffic began to build, it was time for the car to be parked safely. Crowded and congested roads are not the right place for a machine that has the heart of a glorious beast!

VERDICT The convertible with its powerful engine is a driver’s car. The car drives like a beast, yet it’s comfortable and technologically advanced with controls that are easy and nimble to use. Among its several features, it’s the folding and unfolding of its soft top that gives the car an extremely fascinating look. It’s topless seduction at its best!

The powerful 8 cylinder with its massive power and torque are a real treat. The convertible soft top adds to its elegance.

As for the electronics, it simply enhances the functions within the car, whether it is safety, comfort or speed.

The rear seats are not particularly comfortable and the head room a tad stifling. But this car’s meant to be driven rather to be driven in.

few years back I owned a Bajaj Avenger. After riding it I realised it did not have a great stance. The front wheels were too slim for my liking and it did not exude aggressiveness at all. I got it slightly modified. I had its front wheel replaced by a Rajdoot’s wheel. The bike suddenly acquired a muscular stance. The front wheel had a larger diameter than the rear and now the bike was poised to take off. From a plain Jane look, the bike was now the cynosure of all eyes. People wondered why my Avenger was so different from the others in its league. For a long time I enjoyed all the attention. At the red signal, motorists would stare at my bike, more with envy if not with anything else.

With the new Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS there was no room for any of my juvenile antics.

The bike by itself has an envious personality that combines aggressiveness, masculinity and ruggedness. I was pleased with the envious stares I got from people. I was convinced that the Pulsar had passed the first test, that of being a show stopper.

Since 2001, Pulsar has been a favorite among the youth. It continues to captivate a growing audience. The Pulsar 200NS is no ordinary Pulsar. It’s a beast with a different nickname.

This 199.5 cc bike is the world’s first bike which features triple spark plug ignition which claims up to 50pc enhanced combustion and exhaust technology. It has 4 valves, single camshaft and a monoshock suspension. It gives maximum power of 23.17bhp at 9500 rpm and maximum torque of 18.3Nm @8000 rpm. It has a six-speed gearbox which I think was always required in a Pulsar. The engine comes to life with an electric start and settles into a soft and muted sound.

Now beasts don’t whisper, they need to roar. The sound from the engine could have been a little louder or perhaps a tad harsher. The sound and the looks do not match. For an aggressive look it should have delivered a bit more punch in its sound. On the looks front it’s a clear winner.

The sportiness is all too appealing and it is undoubtedly the best in its segment.

Priced at 85,000 (ex showroom) it should easily find eager buyers among the young.

Though maneuvering the bike is easy, the bike is built a little high. So for those who

do not have a lanky structure, it gets a bit uncomfortable. But there is enough room to accommodate riders of all sizes on the bike. The brakes too are super efficient.

That’s perhaps one of the reasons why I was tempted to do the ever popular teenage stunt---the ‘stoppie’. The wheelie and the stoppie can only be done on bikes with great acceleration and great braking abilities. I did both several times. There was virtually nothing more for the bike to prove.

On the aesthetics front the bike scores plenty of points. It’s designed to make the young ones weak kneed. The bike

comes with a unique two-tone front mud guard, a single side rear tyre hugger with a flying number plate holder fabricated out of aluminum. That’s in fact a treat to look at. Its speedometer too is smartly designed along with an analog tachometer, odometer and a digital clock on the right.

Though from the front there is a faint resemblance to the CBR 1000R, this bike’s got several traits from the earlier Pulsars.

Its crouched stance, good thigh support, broad fuel tank and its LED tail lamp are some of the features that are just typical of the Bajaj Pulsar signature element. The bike may have a sporty stance but it is definitely

more commuter friendly than it looks. The turning radius is a bit on the wider side and could prove to be a drawback while taking turns at street corners. Unfortunately, the bike does not come with Anti Lock Braking (ABS). This feature should have been ideally been a standard one in this bike. On the whole, the Bajaj Pulsar 200NS is a sporty bike that can be used for daily commuting.

Beyond a point, life cannot be all fun and games, there’s plenty of hard work too. This bike straddles the two worlds of fun and practicality with great poise. One thing is for sure, this bike demands attention and gets that too…rather easily!

I

had to say goodbye thrice when I collected the bike from the Honda showroom. The first time, I said goodbye, they were all smiling and waving and wishing me luck. Two minutes later I realise my rear view mirror hasn’t been tightened properly and it’s swinging about like a drunk on my handle bar. So I go back and they fix it in a jiffy.

I say goodbye, while they’re all smiling and waving and wishing me luck - again.

Two minutes into the ride I get a phone call. I stop by the side of the road and am surprised to see Honda’s number flashing on my cellphone. They tell me I’ve forgotten something behind. And so I go back – again, to say goodbye – again, while they’re all waving and wishing me luck – again. Weird start to a bike review, I know, but that’s the truth. Good thing then that the Honda Dream Yuga, at least, was not getting distracted from doing its job well.

The first thing I notice when I sit on the bike is how comfortable and straight the seating posture is. The handlebars are upright and the foot pegs placed just right. Immediately I knew that I’ll be comfortable over the commute that I’m going to take. And it is going to be a long and arduous commute. Something like an adventure. Basically, the typical daily commute of an Indian city rider. But the Honda doesn’t seem to mind. Like an old Japanese Zen master who’s seen it all, it takes everything you throw at it in its stride. Potholes, slow traffic, traffic jams, even pedestrians jumping out onto the street randomly. It never manages to give any sort of trouble and I don’t even realise how quickly I reach my destination. Even

my posterior, after the long ride, doesn’t seem to complain. Very comfortable indeed, although my left wrist did start paining after that long ride.

The second thing I notice during the ride is how light this thing is. I mean REALLY light. It felt like a bicycle to me. With a small screaming engine tied up in the middle sounding like a puppy dog yapping away. This was fun! (Although this particular conclusion could partially have been influenced by the fact that I had ridden the new Pulsar 200 NS a while ago and that is a heavy bike I tell you. You can find more about that within the pages of this

magazine.) The Honda Dream Yuga turns in really well and its light weight is particularly useful when you’re weaving through heavy traffic and chucking it around corners. Its light weight also comes into play when you’re filling up the fuel tank. You see, Honda can get away with putting in a measly 8.5bhp in this machine and still manage to extract 72kmpl (claimed) and at the same time provide a fair amount of fun in the process. Weight (or the lack of it) helps here.

I take it out for a ‘proper’ test drive later and try to find where I could poke holes in this new product from Honda. We all know

that there’s no dearth of commuter bikes in India. So another one chugging along doesn’t exactly excite my senses. But how does Honda think it is going to make this bike stand out from the rest? For starters, refer to the earlier paragraphs. All my initial conclusions are proven right and yet the fuel needle doesn’t seem to be coming down from the F position. Reason enough?

No? Ok. Then how about tubeless tyres as standard. And filter and battery needing to be changed at 15,000km only. And solid Honda quality and build visible throughout the bike. No? Ok, how about a starting price of 44,642 (ex-showroom, Delhi). That

Verdict

The Honda Dream Yuga is a fun and easy bike to ride. If you’re looking for something for a daily commute, without wanting to get tired at the end of your journey, then this is it. Sure there are other commuter bikes out there, but remember this has Honda’s great build quality and service support backing it. Plus there’s that great mileage figure too.

On the negative side, the bike does vibrate a fair bit at higher RPMs. I couldn’t see behind me in the rear view mirrors at high speeds mainly because they were about to fall off because of the shaking. Or maybe I couldn’t see because they were so small. Mr. Honda, please make bigger mirrors. It helps to know who we’re going to be run over by – a Merc

or a Maruti. And then there’s the top speed. Let’s just skip that part. I managed to hit 100 after a lot of twisting and waiting and I’m sure most of its buyers will be happy with that.

All in all, the Honda Dream Yuga is a fun and comfortable bike to ride and would no doubt be the preferred choice of daily commuters in the days to come. Especially those who ask ‘Kitna deti hai?’ Seems like Honda’s got a winner on its hands here.

espa the beautiful Italian Wasp is here and everybody seems to be noticing. The uncles out for a walk, the aunties taking care of their kids, the kids out to play, the people at the red light. Everyone turns to look at it. Some stop their cars, some stop themselves, and some ask us ‘kitna deti hai?’

We politely oblige as many as we can and try to slip away as quietly as possible. Not happening. Then we just resort to speed. It is that cute to look at. Much smaller than what I had initially imagined it to be, the striking red colour of the scooter along with the red Vespa helmet that I’m wearing don’t help in keeping the stares away either.

The Good Stuff: Looks (Obviously) Yes this is a beautiful piece of machine.

And I’ll bet you’ll get at least one girl to sit behind you because of the Vespa (but make sure she doesn’t fall off while you’re busy telling her about your gym routines).

And if you’re a girl, well I think you like the Vespa already and are figuring out ways to blackmail your dad into buying you one right now. The Good Stuff: Ride (Didn’t see that coming did you?)

The ride was the second most exciting thing about the Vespa. I had loads of fun on it.

Because my hands were somewhere above my head while riding it, I was fooled into thinking it had a high centre of gravity.

Piaggio claims the Vespa uses a unique Link spring mechanism between the engine and the frame and also a Stabilising torque that offers Low Speed Stability. I’m sure they have. The scooter is as stable as a mountain goat on our Indian roads. I took it over pot holes and mud and craters and sidewalks, along with a very heavy pillion rider perched precariously on that funny seat behind me, and not once did I ever feel that I was losing balance or have to put my feet down. Total balance!

The under seat storage area seemed sufficient enough for the helmet that I had and the front glove box could easily be used to carry small items of use. There was

Neat! Piaggio gives the official figures as 9 bhp@ 7500 RPM and 10.6 Nm@ 6000 RPM; quite enough for a scooter of this size and weight. The Vespa has smooth acceleration all the way till 80km/hr and then struggles a bit further to about 90.

I couldn’t make it go any faster. But then again, on our roads, who will?

The Flaws (Yes, we have to talk about them) I like the attention being doled out in dollops whenever I’m on the scooter.

want to spend 68,250 (ex-showroom, Delhi) on a scooter that basically does the same job as a trusty old Chetak, then it’s worth every single penny. But if you’re the kind who’d rather have substance over style then we have a few kinks. Let’s talk about build quality first. The monocoque all-steel construction is sturdy, safe and yes light, but apart from that there’s a lot of low cost plastic to be seen all over – suspension cover, handle bars, front glove box. Secondly, the seating position is a bit too tallish for my liking, as if I have to hold a smelly baby high and in front of me while someone changes its diapers – the shoulders start aching after a while. The rear guard rail also seems to be built too low for any kind of functional support. But that could well turn out to be

useful when you want to kick that noisy friend off your scooter.

Apart from these minor kinks, there weren’t any other problems that we faced with our time spent with it. I’m thinking if it had stuck around our offices for a few more days, it would’ve become a family member.

And that’s what the Vespa’s inherent USP is.

If you remember that old scooter that your dad used to take you around in, with you standing in front taking the whole world in as it sped along, then the Vespa will definitely connect with you. It’ll take you back to those times when the scooter was more than just a mode of transport. It was a family member. It’s like riding nostalgia.

And this new Vespa has all the potential of becoming your new family member.

hy do girls have all the fun? That’s what I have always been asking the guys around. Except for slouching on their monstrous bikes, all they did were nod their heads helplessly. But somewhere, someone heard my call. Thus was born the Hero Maestro. When Hero Motocorp brought in the Pleasure first, all we could hear was incessant screaming. The girls loved it. The boys waited patiently for their turn and then came in the Maestro.

No screaming, only adulation! It’s getting tougher for the manufacturers today.

They’ve got to please the boys and the girls, each in their own distinct way. That’s called giving individuality to each of their products and brands. Hero MotoCorp is now luring the males by offering them the new ‘Maestro’. I took the scooter for a spin to find out whether it was really the ‘Master of all rides’.

Surprisingly, the scooter met my expectations and gently massaged my male ego too. I couldn’t be caught riding a lemon, it’s got to pat my pride and my individuality. First and foremost, the styling is very gentle and dignified. It does not have a menacing look that some bikes possess and thus may not appeal to those obsessed with such attributes. Typically it may not appeal to the boys looking for aggression, rather to the young office goers keen to carve a career for themselves. The scooter’s broad warning light cluster and large grab-bar are a few features that add to the masculinity factor.

The Maestro has a big flat floorboard with a spacious legroom, enough to accommodate a tall rider very easily. Its ignition key slit is equipped with a shutter for safety and a bag-hook is placed in front of the seat. Ideally, this hook is important when you want to place your laptop bag on the floorboard and hook it to it for safety while you ride away. There’s more such utility space, one beneath the seat as you lift it and one in front which can be opened with a key. This is where practicality comes to play. No bike can offer such practical solutions. No amount of downpour can damage the goods that you store in these compartments. Your mobile phones, your scooter papers etc. can be stored here safely in case of a heavy downpour.

The sound that emanates from the 109cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine is quite familiar when you rev it up. It’s a distinct Honda Activa sound. There are no two ways about the refinement of the engine. The engine unleashes a power of 8.2bhp at 7500rpm and torque of 9.10Nm at 7500rpm. The Maestro is going to give the Honda Activa a run for its money in this segment, Sweet revenge, undoubtedly!

However, the Maestro’s acceleration is a wee bit slower. But I think this really would not matter much as it has a lot more to impress. The Hero Maestro’s fit-and-finish quality is at par with its rivals and it is a

matter of time before it takes a huge lead in its segment.

A negative point that surrounds the Maestro is that it comes with the old linked hydraulic dampers at front which to a great extent affect the suspension of this otherwise perfect machine. The Maestro has drum brakes that are assisted by the CBS (Combined Braking System) technology that ensures easy braking and manages to keep skidding at bay to quite an extent.

Its large headlights, stylish tail lamp, impressive indicators and a wide stop lamp plays a vital role in giving it the title of a

large scooter which makes it uncommon among its peers. The rear view mirrors are partly body coloured and partly black. Its analogue speedometer along with a digital display also consists of a trip meter which is the first of its kind in the segment.

An impressive palm grip and a slightly raised handle bar give the rider a complete restful journey. The riding posture is comfortable with proper cushioning from a comfortable seat that can easily accommodate the rider and a pillion. Hero has this time ensured that the riders are given a complete feature oriented product along with stunning styling. The best thing

s a teenager, owning our own bike is one of the first signs of freedom that we yearn for.

Some of us might be lucky enough to get the dream bike we’ve been drooling over - the one that gets all the guys jealous and all the girls on the seat behind. Others get a scooty. But in today’s world, that might not be bad you know, especially given that petrol costs more than an average meal at The Hilton today. Well, for those who find spending money on petrol a tad bit wasteful, or maybe just want another scooter to make the run around the local market, there’s the electric Photon from Hero. It’s fun, smart, quiet and best of all, you don’t have to spend a penny on filing it up with obnoxious polluting fuels (well almost – you do have to charge it up – and where do you think electricity come from?

The Hero Photon is at a concept stage right now, and was displayed as such at the 2012 Auto Expo held at New Delhi.

Although, looking at the scooter now, it seems quite production ready at the moment. Hero intends to export the vehicle too. Initially, the Photon will be available with a VRLA (sealed lead acid) battery as well as a lithium-Ion battery pack option. The export models will contain the lithium Ion battery pack.

Obviously, the lead acid battery pack will be heavier, weighing in at an approximate 111kg kerb weight and the Lithium Ion will weigh around 85kg. The range will also differ. Hero claims the VRLA Photon will have a range of around 60km and the Lithium Ion version will manage to carry you for 75km. Top speed will be limited at 45km/hr for both versions - which is not bad for an electric scooter at all. Most of the competition cannot match up to

hawanipatna is the headquarters of Kalahandi district in Odisha.

Bhawanipatna is a town of numerous temples dedicated to different deities of the Hindu pantheon. Named after its presiding deity “Bhawani-Shankar”, it is the most convenient base for touring various places of interest in the district and the nearby district of Nawapara.

Around 418km from Bhubaneswar, Bhawanipatna is connected by allweather roads and regular bus services from important parts of Odisha. The nearest railway station is at Kesinga, 35km away. The nearest airport is Raipur airport, a distance of 229km.

As the distance from Delhi was quite far and would have taken at least two days drive, we took a direct train from Delhi

to Kesinga. It took us 32 hours to reach Kesinga and as the train got delayed by almost 4 hours, we were very tired after such a long train journey so we headed to our hotel directly.

According to the 2001 India census, Bhawanipatna had a population of 61,671 of which 12pc is less than six years of age.

Tours to Bhawanipatna is a way to escape from the grips of concrete jungles and into the arms of the enchanting wildlife.

Like the other district headquarters, Bhawanipatna also acts as a base camp to visit other tourist attractions in the neighboring areas of the Kalahandi district, apart from Nawapara.

The day after we reached, we decided to start early in the morning for our tour of the village of Khond. We were cordially welcomed by the villagers and they showed us around. We were told that Khonds, or Kandhs are an aboriginal tribe of India, inhabiting the tributary

states of Odisha and Srikakulam, in the Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh. Their main divisions are Kutia, or hill Khonds and plain-dwelling Khonds; the landowners are known as Raj Khonds.

They are hunter gatherers. They go out for collective hunts and they survive on the fruits and roots that they collect.

They usually cook food with oil extracted from sal and mahua seeds. They are also knowledgeable about the usage of medicinal plants. These practices make them mainly dependent on forest resources for survival. Their religion is animistic, and their pantheon includes 83 Gods. We noticed that Khonds are as tall as an average Indian and are not very dark. Though they are undoubtedly a mixed Dravidian race, they have a bit of Aryan blood. The villagers offered us breakfast and lunch, which we ate with them happily.

The Khonds are believed to be from the Proto-Australoid ethnic group.

Their native language is Kui, a Dravidian language written with the Oriya script.

The Khonds have shown exceptional adaptability to the forest environment.

However, due to development interventions in education, medical facilities, irrigation and plantation, they are forced into the modern way of life in many ways. Their traditional life style, customary traits of economy, political organisation, norms, values and world view have been drastically changed over a long period. The Khond women are very fond of ornaments. Among the Dongria Khonds, the women beautify themselves with hair pins, ear rings, nose rings, and necklaces. Wristlets and ear rings are used by the males of the primitive section of the Khond communities. The men folk too like to grow long hair and tie this into a knot at their nape in a traditional fashion.

We learnt that the Dongria Khond family is often nuclear, although extended families also exist. Female family members are considered assets because of their contribution inside and outside the household and women are on an equal footing with the male members, whatever be the task, be it building a house or cultivation. Women do all the work for household ranging from fetching water from the distant streams, cooking,

serving food to each member of the household to cultivating, harvesting and marketing of produce in the bazaar.

Due to this, the bride price is paid to her parents when she gets married which is a striking feature of the Dongrias.

It was already evening when we requested them to perform their folk dance which is known as the Ghumura dance. Ghumura dance is the most sought after folk dance in Kalahandi. It is classiďŹ ed as folk dance as the dress code of Ghumura resembles more like a tribal dance, but recent researchers argue different mudra and dance forms present in Ghumura bear more resemblance to other classical dance forms of India.

Ghumura dance has evolved from a war dance to a dance form for cultural and social activities. The dance is associated with social entertainment, relaxation, love, devotion and friendly brotherhood among all classes, creeds and religions in

the present day.

We enjoyed the dance thoroughly and thanked them for their cooperation.

But before we could leave they offered us their local drink and also told us alcohol is a necessity for all Khonds. It is considered as food and at the same time a ritualistic food to satisfy deities and spirits. It is considered a social necessity and therefore consumed by all, irrespective of sex and age. The Khond tribe of Odisha is fond of drinking salap palm juice and dead palm juice (Tadi).

Local herbs and roots are added to the juice to increase its alcoholic contents.

Alcohol prepared from mahua ďŹ&#x201A;owers which are used on special occasions. We tasted their drink which was not exactly desirable for our urban palette.

It was another beautiful journey with lots of good memories for us. We plan to visit another tribe in another region of our incredible India in our next journey.

s victims of the worst Indian summer since 1888 we decided to ďŹ&#x201A;ee to the south.

Because Bangalore, Mysore and the Nilgiris are in the rain shadow, they do not get the full force of the monsoons and are deliciously cool.

We drove a brilliant blue Toyota Liva hatchback on our journey. Despite an early start it took ages to get out of Bangalore

onto the excellent NH 209 highway to Mysore. We then took a lovely diversion after an hour to see the beautiful Cauvery Falls at Shivasamudram, which is Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second largest waterfall. It was thrilling to see the great Cauvery River crash nearly 100 meters into a great pool below. We then drove on to the nearby 12th century Hoysala Somnathpur temple. This temple was built in the same tradition as the great

temples of Belur and Halibid but is smaller.

It is also perfectly preserved having been buried in sand for many centuries.

An hour later we rejoined the highway and visited Tipu Sultanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s island city of Srirangapatna that the British captured in 1799 after a ďŹ erce battle. It is also a well known temple town. Owing to a heavy bout of rain we pressed on to

Mysore 20km away. After visiting the very ornate Maharajaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s palace we drove up the nearby hill to see the Chaumandi temple that, legend has it, is the place where the Goddess destroyed the monster Mahishasura. The nearby Nandi bull stands at 5 meters tall.

As it was getting late we had to rush to get to our next destination in the Masangudi game sanctuary next to the bigger Bandipur, Madhumalai and Wayanad sanctuaries that boast of a big tiger population and the biggest concentration of Indian bisons. We stayed at the very comfortable Jungle Resort just below the Nilgiri escarpment. One has to be careful moving at night as wild animals often stray into the large estate. Panthers and other big cats usually move away but wild elephants can be dangerous. Another day spent in forest safaris turned out to be quite enjoyable and on the third day we set off to Ooty that has now become the unpronounceable Udagamandalam. These tall Nilgiri hills had long been forbidden to Hindus and were only inhabited by the Toda tribesmen. It was only opened in the 19th century. Though Ooty was just 30 Kms away we had to climb 36 steep hairpin bends that was a great test for the steering and handling of the little car.

Ooty is mainly famous for its long lake where tourists love to go boating. The shops also sell some wonderful herbal oils, wild honey and homemade chocolates. For me the main attraction was to go another 6km to Lovedale where I studied for a year at the famous Lawrence School. We did however go to the last bastion of British tradition, the Ooty Club, where we had a

sumptuous lunch overlooked by ferocious stuffed heads of tigers, leopards, wild boar, sambhar deer and other trophies of that `hunting - fishing’ era. Driving through beautifully manicured hillsides of tea plantations we also went to Coonoor 35km away that is a little lower and thus warmer. The character of the Nilgiri hills is very different from any other part of India and makes for a very pleasant change.

The return journey of some 300km took just six leisurely hours in this 1,200cc 80 HP petrol engine car. The engine accelerated effortlessly while

the swinging arm rear suspension easily absorbed the irritating speed breakers that mar all the roads through the game parks. It is spacious and comfortable even if cost cutting is evident to make it a very affordable large hatchback. The fuel efficiency was however excellent and we averaged 15.2kmpl on the 800km trip.

The Etios Liva is a good car for city driving and quite competent on highways and hills as well.

Istanbul A confluence of two worlds

here is an oft repeated quote about Istanbul: If you want to gaze upon two worlds, then gaze upon Istanbul. Indeed, a pulsating metropolis, it straddles Europe and Asia in equal measure. Over the years it has been ruled by Greeks, Romans and Ottomans. Perhaps, that‘s why it’s a study of contrasts. Jeans clad women next to veiled Islamic women,Islamic calligraphy and Biblical frescoes, colonialera embassy buildings and tea houses brimming with old men playing “okey” comfortably coexisting with smart bars and sublime rooftop restaurants.

If you are visiting Istanbul for the first time like us, you will be obliged to spend at least a few hours ogling the city’s historic district, Sultanahmet. To make things easy, we decided to pitch camp there at a very imaginatively named hotel called ‘The And Hotel’.

A UNESCO designated heritage site, Sultanahmet makes it easy for you to walk down to most of Istanbul’s sights. We start with an easy walk to the fifth-century basilica-turned-mosque-turned museum called Aya Sofia. (Sancta Sophia in Latin, Haghia Sofia in Greek, and the Church of the Divine Wisdom in English.)

Built by Emperor Justinian, it was a monumental effort to restore the

greatness of the Roman Empire. It remained the largest church in the world before Mehmet the Conqueror turned it into a mosque. Kemal Ataturk finally put an end to the debate by turning it into a museum in 1935.

As we enter the Aya Sofia through tall doors, the sheer size and the grandeur silences us. The dome soars high into the heavens. We echo silently what Justinian himself is supposed to have said, “Oh Solomon, I have outdone you.” The good part is, nothing was destroyed in the name of religion by the subsequent owners of the Aya Sofia. Hence it is not unnatural to find Christian, Roman and Islamic influences all under one roof.

As opposed to conventional domes that are supported by pillars, Aya Sophia’s dome is supported by 40 massive interlocking ribs. The bricks are special hollow bricks made from light porous clay resting on huge pillars that are concealed in the interior walls. The engineering brilliance is well-matched by artistic skill.

The imperial door has a huge mosaic of Christ as the protector of all, over it.

As we enter the main hall, one just has to look up to the ceiling to see magnificent mosaics of Madonna with the child and Ignatius. The upper floors of the Aya Sofia has even more beautiful mosaics.

The Last Judgement goes back to the 14th century. The mosaic of Empress Zoe with Emperor Constantine is next to it. As one leaves the magnificent museum, we can see the mosaic of Emperor Constantine offering Constantinople to Mary and Jesus Christ, while Emperor Justinian is seen offering the Aya Sofia.

As we tore our eyes away from the mosaics, we saw giant 19th century medallions inscribed by master calligrapher Mustafa Effendi. They name Allah, Prophet Muhammad and the caliphs Ali and Abu Bakr. We shifted our eyes and rested our eyes on a magnificent pulpit from where the priests conducted sermon.

Diagonally below the pulpit is a prayer pedestal that points towards Mecca.

Bizarre, but true.

For something that is steeped in history, it’s not surprising to find urban legends.

One of which is the weeping column.

Legend has it, that if you were to put your finger in the hole in one of the pillars, and it came out moist, you would be healed of all illnesses. I tried too. And the finger was dry. I guess, wanderlust is incurable.

Next stop? Blue Mosque.

The Blue mosque rivals the Aya Sofia in grandeur and size albeit more conventional. So instead of the ‘floating dome’ of the Aya Sofia, the mosque’s magnificent dome rests on 4 massive elephant feet pillars.

The architect too is more rounded and in your face. A huge courtyard, 6 minarets, 260 windows are all covered by blue tiles that give the mosque its name. Tourists like us make our way inside through the North door. Once inside, we enter the huge prayer area overshadowed by

a huge chandelier. Stained glass windows complete the magical effect.

We round off our day with a quick visit to the Basilica Cistern.

Built by Emperor Justinian in 532 Ad, the Basilica Cistern was built to store water for Topkapi Palace and its surrounding areas.

It gets its name from the fact that it was built under Stoa Basilica, one of the main squares in the area.

Propped up by 336 columns, the cistern is 65 m wide and 143 m long. At its height it could store up to 80,000 cu metres of water all pumped in through aqueducts that came in from Belgrade forest 19 km away. Constructed with columns and plinths from ruined buildings it is not unnatural to find each column looking very different from the next one.

We walked on specially constructed gangways over the water body and watch resident goldfish swim in the cistern’s cool waters. The Basilica Cistern also houses its own candlelit café, where soft lighting and

classical music contributes to the overall atmosphere of the place.

The far left-hand corner of the cistern has two Medusa heads. Both are casually used as column bases; one positioned upside down, the other tilted to the side.

Both their positioning and origin remain a mystery, although rumour has it that they were recycled from an antique building of the late Roman period.

The cistern itself was rediscovered only recently in the 15th century by Petrus Gyllius a researcher stumbled upon it accidentally. He became suspicious when residents told him they could lower a fishing rod through their basement and catch fish. Centuries of neglect had clogged it with bodies, construction material and carpets.

Grand Bazaar It started as a small market enclosure under Mehmet the Conqueror. The Grand Bazaar or

Covered Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world with more than 58 streets and 4,000 shops and is housed under two bedestens (domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror. Over time, the shopkeepers covered the top so that business could be conducted come rain or shine.

Not surprisingly, the bazaar has grown into a labyrinth of shops and alcoves from where business is conducted.

If you have a wallet that’s begging to be set free, this is the ideal place. And yet it is also a crash course in negotiation skills.

We saw beautiful Turkish carpets, glazed tiles and pottery, copper and brassware, apparel made of leather, cotton and wool, meerschaum pipes, alabaster bookends, lamps, ashtrays, Ittar and all sorts of things.

Tourists like yours truly are advised to come armed with a calculator, plenty of time and negotiation skills.

Hard bargaining is often preceded by an extended conversation with the

shopkeeper. Haggling about the price comes later. (But then, we Indians are past masters at it.) But we were careful enough to remember that it’s rude to enter into the ‘bargaining process’ if you are not really interested in buying.

No trip to Istanbul is complete without a trip to a Hamam. Two of which are still functioning in Sultanahmet. The hot humid air is a stark contrast to the air outside. But then, one hour of soap and massage squeezes out every ounce of tiredness. And we are ready for our foray to the most important destination in Istanbul: the Topkapi Palace.

Topkapi Palace A king who went mad after being locked in one of the cages. A sultan who drowned in bath after drinking too much champagne. An evil queen. There is no dearth of intrigue and stories about, Topkapi Palace. It has been the setting of famous movies and TV series.

Started by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453, the palace is set in a beautiful green belt. Over the years, it kept adding to its girth. Perhaps that’s why it’s very

unlike a French Chateau or a British castle.

(Typically, Europeans build a main building and then build gardens around it.) Topkapi is a series of smaller buildings, pavilions, barracks, audience chambers and sleeping quarters arranged around a central green belt.

Not surprisingly, it takes up half a day of our undivided attention. We buy our audio guides and move in.

The palace is divided into four main parts. The first court was for the common folk. We pass by the church of the Divine Peace and the Imperial Mint. They are usually open when there is a festival or an exhibition on.

The second court was used for the administration of the empire. As we go through the huge gates, constructed by Suleyman the Magnificent, we are told that only the Sultan and his mother could go through on horseback. The rest had to dismount and enter. Since we are on foot, the rules does not apply to us.

The palace kitchen is to our right as we enter. The collection of Chinese porcelain dates back to the Ming Dynasty. Matching it in grandeur is the silverware and the

glassware collection. To our left is the Imperial Council Chamber, where the administrators met to discuss affairs of the state. (Often, the sultan eavesdropped through a grille placed high on a wall.)

Next to it is the inner treasury that stores arms and armaments.

The most beautiful part of the palace is the Harem. Literally, the harem means ‘private’. In reality, it was the Imperial quarters and life inside was conducted with great decorum unlike what popular culture would have you believe. It was the Queen Mother’s private fiefdom. And she often ran it with an iron hand. The women who gained an entree into the harem were

schooled in Islamic and Turkish culture as well as the arts of make-up, dressing, reading and writing. Then they were inducted as ladies-in-waiting to the royal family.

The harem is built into a hillside and has 6 stunning levels that include the Sultan’s quarters, his library, his wives’ quarters, the Queen Mother’s quarters and the ornate dining room.

The third section of the fort leads begins from the Gate of Felicity and leads to an audience chamber inside that was used to welcome foreign ambassadors and dignitaries. Foreign affairs and other important businesses of the state were

conducted here. The Sultan himself sat on pearl-encrusted cushions to inspect the gifts brought by ambassadors.

Appropriately, the library of Ahmet the 3rd was constructed right behind the audience chambers. The Sultan often retired to it for resting and reading.

The treasury is another important part of the palace which houses a breathtaking array of Turkish history. The sword of Suleyman the Magnificent, the Throne of Ahmet 1, the arm and skull of St. John the Baptist, diamond candlesticks and the famous Topkapi Dagger.

here. Legend has it, that it was found in a rubbish heap and purchased by a street peddler for the princely sum of 3 spoons.

Marvelling at the vagaries of Lady Luck, we move on.

The fourth and the last section of the Topkapi Palace consists of the more pleasurable sections. Beautiful Iznik tiles, mother-of-pearl and tortoise shell inlay and stunning woodwork. The golden roof built by Ibrahim the Mad is just next to it.

It was built because he wanted a beautiful spot to break his Ramazan fast.

We walk out of Topkapi Palace tired after a full day’s work.

Our last stop in Istanbul is the Bogazici University or the Bosphorus University. We are accompanied by a mutual friend who’s an alumni. So he knows all the secret hot spots. And if truth be told, I have not seen a more beautiful location for a university.

He claims that he flunked three times so he could stay on in the University - I am not surprised. It has the most romantic spot in all of Turkey. The canteen hugs a

small hill on the banks of the Bosphorus.

The classrooms overlook the Golden Horn as tugs, and yachts float past.

Literally, Bosphorus means “cow’s crossing” and it separates the Asian Turkey from the European one. On one side are the erstwhile residences of the sultan, ministers and ambassadors. The Bosphorus is a beehive of activity. People fishing on the Bosphorus bridge, small yachts carrying a rich man and his family, barbecuing on the banks and of course the milling crowds at Rumeli Hisari (a fortress converted to an open air theatre.)

After 21 days of non-stop travelling, we are exhausted, but richer for having seen many cultures under one roof. The Turkish tucks us in with a blanket. And we are transported for a moment back to the land of the whirling dervishes.

Tips for travellers For great kebabs, follow your ears: What does a delicious kebab sound like? To find out, look out for the rhythmic sound of

the zirh blade. The zirh is a heavy curved knife that is used to cut slabs of beef and lamb. Fresh meat is cut for each kebab depending on your preferences – fatty or lean, spicy or not. – The hands are made wet before wetting his hands and working it on to long skewers. The meat used at most kebab shops may be of fine quality, but it has usually been put through a grinder once or twice leaving it limp. Zirh-cut meat tastes fresh and has a texture to it.

Many Turkish words are phonetic.

Like Hindi. The origin was Persian. Not surpisingly, there is a great similarity to Hindi. eg: Duniya for world. Hava for Air. Chai for Tea. Travel well. It is not possible to see all the sights of Turkey in one go. However, where you travel, make sure you see that part well.

SRK rocks. Many people know SRK and his movies. We even got a gift from a shopkeeper because we were from the land of SRK!

re you a barbeque buff with an appetite that can plunder an entire menu? The mini charcoalgrills, perfectly seated at your table with an assortment of exotic dips by the side, make this place different from most other Indian restaurants.

The Pirates of Grill at Rajouri Garden in New Delhi offers an elaborate buffet that promises value for money.

The bar on the ground floor is well stocked with both Indian and foreign alcoholic beverages. With a seating capacity of 94 pax each on the ground and the first floor, it is usually packed, so make sure to book the table in advance. The kitchen relies on its four tandoors and the restaurant is manned by a staff of over fifty. The food here is typically suited for the North Indian palate. Noticeably, Punjabis occupy most tables.

At the buffet, the welcome beverage arrived swiftly. The choice included soft drinks/mocktails or beer; I drowned myself in Blue Bird (litchi based) and Green Island (kiwi fruit), relishing both. It certainly rejuvenated my spirit after a long drive from south Delhi.

prawns, I went for the non-vegetarian soup.

The soups were scrumptious but lacked variety with one each in the non-vegetarian and vegetarian category viz. Sancocho Chicken Soup and Spicy Tomato Coriander Soup. The unlimited non-vegetarian snacks included the Galauti Kebab, Atishi Murg Tikka alongside Gilafi Mutton Seekh kebab, Tandoori Prawns and fine Fried Fish.

The prawns were small but juicy and the refurbishing on the table-grill was timely and courteous.

The Fried Fish for the starters arrived after much beckoning and by that time there was no appetite left, though I did manage to savor a few bites for taste. I’d suggest that you prioritize your dishes and make sure the dishes are on the table-grill before you start. Don’t be impulsive in picking up just whatever comes for starters or you may end up filling your belly without having your favourite dishes. For the main course, the vegetarians can be sure of a huge variety.

The must tries are: Palak Mirch Masala and Dal Makhani, while the meat-eaters must try Josh-e-Gosht - tender goat-meat pieces in thick onion tomato gravy - and the aromatic Murgh Dum Biryani.

My favourite vegetarian starter, the Grilled Pineapple was completely refreshing.

The salad counter was replete with cold curds and salads but had few takers, even for the mid-summer meal. The main course comprised of the regular biryanis – veg/ non-veg besides steamed rice and chilli flake noodles as accompaniment for the two Chinese dishes - Vegetable Manchurian and Chilli Garlic Fish - the latter being quite a damper with vulgar salt! The main dishes included Paneer Lababdar, Gobhi Adraki, Corn Palak, Kadai Murg Masala, Josh-e-

Gosht, besides the regular Dal Makhani, Dum Aloo, Pindi Chholey. I learnt that the seasonal Sarson Ka Saag and Gobhi Mattar Adraki are the winter favourite vegetarian dishes here. The desserts included an assortment of Fruit Tarts, Shahi Tukda, Moong Dal Halwa, Blueberry Cheese Cake, Mango Cheese Cake, Brownie and Vanilla Ice-Cream with Fresh Fruits.

A few of the quotations on the restaurant’s wall read: “When pirates finished their loot, they roared. When you do, burp”.

“Here you won’t need cutlasses and muskets. Just a fork and knife will do” “Pirates were known to make their own songs. So why don’t you make your own bar-be-cue?”

The restaurant needs to innovate further with its marinades and expand the repertoire in both the meat and seafood sections. The concept of personalized grill is tasteful and enticingly priced for a revisit.

The ambience and service is good.

The restaurant is open for buffet lunch (12:30pm - 3:30pm at Rs 422 per head with taxes) and buffet dinner (7:00pm - 11:30pm with live band at Rs 700 per head with taxes).

The place does not have a-la-carte menu so you better be convinced about your appetite before landing up here!

After completing three years, the restaurant is now headed to Gurgaon with its second outlet. Its owners, the Bagga brothers have another established Indian food chain: More than Paranthas located at Faridabad, Noida and Bangalore.
