KEY CLUB PLEDGE

I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

spotlight on service program

WHAT IS SOSP?

SOSP stands for Spotlight on Service Program. Every month, we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

In order to promote the CNH (California, Nevada, Hawaii) district goals of service, CNH focuses on a different theme for service each month! By fundraising, volunteering, and hosting events, clubs are able to support and participate in the CNH Spotlight on Service Program Focus.

Children’s Education

Throughout August, we have been working on Children’s Education and fundraising for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) throughout this month. Some events from this month that align with the SOSP are helping teachers at Roosevelt Elementary and Fox Elementary before school, and making bookmarks for incarcerated juveniles at the Liberation Library.

9 volunteers for 20.167 hours

At the Fox Elementary School event on August 8th, Key Clubbers were able to give back to the community by aiding teachers in their back-to-school prep. We helped set up classrooms, make photocopies, put up wall decorations, and inflate sports equipment. Generally, providing help in whatever way was needed. This was a very positive experience, as many of us had actually attended Fox as kids, so it was a full-circle moment for sure. The staff members were all super friendly, and it was a nice way to help out. I hope this becomes an annual event, and I will definitely attend again in the future!

Joke Book Making for Hospitality Homes took place on Thursday, August 8th, over Zoom and was a great opportunity to make some joke books for patients in hospitality homes. Hospitality Homes is an organization that works to match out-of-town patients with medical housing during their treatment in Boston. For this event, I folded pieces of paper to create mini joke books and then wrote some jokes inside. I also added some fun, colorful drawings to go with the jokes. I had a great time making these joke books, and I hope they can help bring smiles to someone's day!

The Family Campout was on Friday, August 9th, and it was a great way to help people of the San Carlos community bond during a fun, family-andfriend-oriented event. At the event, I helped keep the place clean, moved equipment, and lead kids through activities. I also got to set up what was needed for the movie portion of the event. Overall, my experience was super positive, as I got to hang out with other Key Clubbers from Carlmont while enjoying the friendly ambiance of the campout. It’s a great event that I would definitely recommend to all Key Clubbers as well!

4 volunteers for 9 hours

Helping teachers at Roosevelt Elementary School on Saturday, August 10th, was a remarkable way to give assistance to teachers in Roosevelt Elementary School. We had a great time helping teachers and recalling childhood memories while volunteering! We helped teachers one by one by placing one member to one teacher. I organized kids’ library books by categories and replaced the bookshelves. After that, I renewed the sticker boards by taking off more than 150 stickers on it. I was so grateful to help teachers at Roosevelt Elementary School. I was happy that I could help children by assisting teachers. I hope kids will like the brandnew colorful bookshelves!

The Making Soul Boxes event took place on Saturday, August 10th. To help the Soul Box Project, we folded origami boxes and decorated them with messages and designs to honor the lives lost to gun violence. I thought this activity was both a little solemn but calming, as I was reminded of the victims and the emotional impact of gun violence. We sent our finished boxes to a Soul Box Project Branch to be displayed at an exhibit, and I hope it helps raise more awareness about this issue.

The Bookmarks for Liberation Library event was on August 11th and it was an amazing opportunity to channel our inner artist while helping our community! We created bookmarks with motivational messages and fun designs in hopes of uplifting incarcerated youth. I really enjoyed this event because it was a great way to destress while doing our part to help people in need. I would encourage everyone to participate in this event in the future!

The Redwood Shores Annual Levee Cleanup on August 24th was a community event at which participants worked together to clean up Mariner Park and the surrounding area. When we arrived, we were given trash bags, vests to wear, and tools to pick up trash. Then, we set out, the majority of us in groups, to gather litter throughout Mariner Park. We walked around Mariner Park while talking and picking up trash. I had a lot of fun and also got to know some new people. I would love to do it again next year, and I think it’s a great opportunity for anyone to connect with their community.

The Cardz for Kids event on Tuesday, August 27, was a virtual meeting where KEY Club members created cards for people around the world to brighten their spirits. At the event, members had options to create cards for pediatric patients, seniors, military members, or in Spanish. We met on Zoom and each made 1-2 cards in the span of 2 hours. Looking at the reactions of some recipients in the Cardz for Kidz YouTube, I can see that these cards can really brighten the days of children whose lives seem grim when confined in the hospital. This was one of those activities that is counted as volunteer work but is also quite enjoyable. We got to use our creativity to craft fun, beautiful cards.

division council meeting

The August Division Council Meeting (DCM) on August 25th, with 40+ attendees, was a great way to meet other Key Clubbers from the division and contribute to the community! At this event, we created stress balls that were donated to Carlmont’s Students Offering Support program to help students who are struggling with their mental health. Carlmont Key Club also hosted a division fundraiser for the Pediatric Trauma Program, by offering a slice of pizza to everyone who donated $5 to the program and eventually raising $82. Overall, I loved getting to know other Key Clubbers and working

with them to make a difference in our schools and community. I highly encourage other Key Clubbers to attend the monthly DCMs in the future!
