BRING A GOOD FRIEND/ PROSPECTIVE MEMBER TO OUR CLUB LUNCHEONS! It's the easiest way to expose our Club to possible new members! We must stay focused on this mission. This is key to the projects we undertake, and in keeping our District 7390 banner where we feel it should be!

Rotary International News My fellow Rotarians: January is the month the Romans associated with their two-headed god Janus: one head looking backward to the year that has just passed, and the other looking forward to the year ahead. In Rotary, January is the halfway point of our year of service, and it is also a time for us all to look at both the past and the future. It is the time of year to take stock, to review the goals that we have set for ourselves, and to evaluate how well we have fulfilled those expectations. It is a time to look honestly at our progress and our challenges and to consider the steps we will need to take to complete our planned service successfully. I am sure there is much you can be proud of achieving in the last six months. In my travels, I February 2010

have already seen how much Rotarians can accomplish when they are determined to do so. You have helped bring safe, pure water to those who lacked it, provided food and shelter to those who needed it, and assisted in the educations of those who could not read or write. You have promoted the ideal of service within a context of fellowship, friendship, and high ethical standards. Rotarians are able to make changes that will shape the course not only of the months but of the years and decades that lie ahead. This is our privilege. It is also our duty as Rotarians – as caring members of society who are in the fortunate position of being able to help those living in conditions we can barely imagine. So there is much to be done these next months. Do not waste a moment of that most precious commodity: time. We are all volunteers serving in a volunteer organization. None of us was compelled to become a Rotarian; each of us chose, and was chosen, to Page 2

become a member. Every year, every day, each of us chooses to continue the task we have begun, and to continue to put Service Above Self. It is not always the easy path, but I know it is the right one. I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for the Rotary service you have given, the service you are giving, and the service I know you will continue to give in the future. The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.

John Kenny President, Rotary International

Club News President Jeff’s Corner Fellow Rotarians, We have very good news. The America’s Promise Alliance has named the Rotary Club of Carlisle as a “Place of Promise.” This result stems from the fact that our club with its ongoing programs and revitalized ones wraps the children of Carlisle in the five promises which enhance February 2010

The promises include Caring Adults (Career Jamboree and Junior Achievement; Safe Places (support for Hope Station); a Healthy Start (support the CASD to send students to the Byrnes Health Education Center); Effective Education (Reading Program for Elementary School Students); and Opportunities to Help Others (Interact Clubs). Through the continuation and strengthening of these efforts, we are well on our way to achieving our fourth and fifth club goals – to develop a relationship with the BHEC and to formalize the club’s America’s Promise program. Please remember to bring in any paperback books that you would like to donate to the Carlisle branch of Operation Paperback, a program that has sent over 21,000 books to our deployed service members over the last four years. The Rotary Club’s collection campaign will continue through the month of February when the books along with a donation to help pay for shipping will be presented to Ms. Sally Brooks and Ms. Selina Fansler, Carlisle’s representatives for Operation Paperback. Please contact Bill Blankmeyer at 2452622 if you have a lead on any organization that might want to donate books to this worthy cause. The Career Expo (formerly Career Jamboree) Committee wants to thank everyone in advance for their support of the upcoming Career Expo at Carlisle High School that will be conducted on Tuesday, 16 March from 6 to 9 P.M. The focus for this event will once again be to provide career information to both students and their parents. However, this year’s new venue will also provide you the opportunity to share information about your local businesses and to become better known within the community. Additionally, as this event will have over 40+ secondary schools in attendance it is anticipated that a very large crowd will be in attendance. The Career Expo provides an important service to the community and introduces Rotary to our next generation. Please consider volunteering to participate in this event or to help find appropriate presenters from outside the Club. As in the past the Career Expo will be a joint venture with the support of our fellow Page 3
