December 2010

Our 89th year

“Service Above Self” has volunteered to chair the project. Norm Smith has also volunteered his efforts. The local Kiwanis Club just did exactly the same, about a month ago, at the Le Tort Community Center, Army War College. Many local community leaders attended. Great turnout and event! We’ll keep members posted on progress. Club News President Juan’s Corner We hope all of you had an enjoyable, safe Thanksgiving holiday with your families. Our Annual Christmas Dinner / Kenya Dental and Water Mission Benefit Auction will be held Thursday, Dec. 16, at Dickinson College’s Student Union Building on N. College and W. High Streets. Our Annual “Four Way Test Award” will be presented, as well as another special award. Several District Governors will be attending. Remember, it’s BYOB, as long as you are served at their bar, by their employees. Several members typically contribute liquid spirits to share with others. Bring spouses, guests, prospective members. Guest invitations will be $25. Dottie Warner will be handing out invitations starting with this Thursday’s meeting. Our Valentine’s Day luncheon will be on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, noon, at Comfort Suites Hotel. This event is also typically attended by spouses and guests. Location is Downtown Carlisle, next to the Old Courthouse, on S. Hanover Street. Our Board has approved having a special celebration dinner on Thursday, May 5, 2001, to celebrate our Club’s 90th Birthday. Sharyn Arai December 2010

Due to a higher price for our lunches, Honorary Members and visitors will now incur a $12.00 fee. Prospective Members will continue to be the Club’s guests. This is still less than it would have been at our prior location. Regardless, our new weekly meeting location at Rillo’s has worked out very well. The quality of the food has improved. The meeting site atmosphere has been enhanced. These improvements should promote improved fellowship amongst those attending, attract new members, and retain current ones. Many thanks to fellow Rotarian Jeff Goss, his family and staff. Club Member Duane Duncan has volunteered to be “Co-Chairman” of our Downtown Flower Basket Committee. We need another Co-Chair. Requesting a volunteer. Many thanks to Tom Frederick for having chaired this committee for many years. Our Ambassadorial Scholar, Melissa Nolan, currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, continues to make great strides in her efforts. I just received a letter from the Club President of Bariloche, Arg., to congratulate us and her for a job very well done. Upon completion, she will be returning to the USA to a graduate scholarship at Georgetown University. Great job, Melissa; keep it up. There will be no Club Meeting on December 23 and December 30, due to Christmas and New Page 1

BRING A GOOD FRIEND/ PROSPECTIVE MEMBER TO OUR CLUB LUNCHEONS! It's the easiest way to expose our Club to possible new members! We must stay focused on this mission. This is key to the projects we undertake, and in keeping our District 7390 banner where we feel it should be!

December 16th—Rotary Club Christmas Dinner December 23rd—no meeting December 30th—no meeting

December 9th SPEAKER & PROGRAM: Megan Riesmeyer, Esq. (Law Clinics at Dickinson School of Law) INVOCATION: Bill Spruill GREETERS: Ed Rice, Wayne Powell During my initial visit, I developed a deep appreciation for both the traditions and the challenges of life in Africa, and my respect and admiration for the land and people have caused me to return several times as a Rotarian. Now – almost amazingly – I have a unique opportunity to use my experience as a Rotary Scholar to enhance the role of Rotary in Africa!

Rotary International News “Reach Out to Africa”

I was a Rotary Scholar at the University of Cape Town in 1961. During my year there, I traveled 16,000 miles through South Africa and the countries now known as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia. I visited 35 Rotary clubs, met countless Rotarians, and became immersed in the rich culture of Southern Africa. December 2010

This is the fourth year of the Reach Out to Africa (ROTA) initiative, and the ROTA Committee for this year has been streamlined to move more quickly and efficiently to achieve its goals. We need to increase the number of Rotarians in Africa! I also hope to see a substantial increase in international service projects for Africa, particularly those projects with assistance from The Rotary Foundation. The ROTA Committee has an excellent website, and I encourage all Rotarians to review it at www.reachouttoafrica.org . I have implemented two new activities this year to make it easier for Rotarians to visit Africa and to increase their involvement in international service projects. The first is Ray’s Rotary Reunions, to be held in Cape Town 3-5 February, and I hope many Rotarians will join me in the Fairest Cape for that event. The second, Rotary Project Safaris, will Page 4

Facilitate visits by Rotarians to the areas of the world where poverty is prevalent, and where local Rotarians have developed many beneficial projects that need financial assistance. More information about the reunions and the safaris is available on the RI president’s pages at www.rotary.org/president . Please contact elsa.sanabria@rotary.org for any needed assistance. I am proud to be a product of The Rotary Foundation, and it will be the most significant achievement of my presidency if I can serve as a catalyst to enhance Rotary in Africa! So come join me for the reunions and the safaris. Help me to complete the circle from being a Rotary Foundation Scholar in Africa to helping Rotary in Africa to be Bigger, Better, and Bolder! ( Watch a video invitation from the president.)
