Our 88th year

“Service Above Self” and did an even greater job!! Many thanks!

CLUB NEWS President Juan’s Corner Congratulations, fellow Rotarians! Our Roast Beef Dinner Meal on July 1, 2010 ended up with ~~1,972 tickets sold, and as all of you know, we ended up giving a few meals (~~120-some) to Project S.H.A.R.E and to The Salvation Army, on “day one” of our new Rotary-Year, 20102011! Great job by all!! Many thanks! Mark Pinker, your photos of this event I know are better than the few I took, so please submit a couple to the media, when you get a chance. Last Friday’s “Christmas in July” Project at the East/West Penn Apartments for the Assisted Living was very successful! I got an e-mail from Colleen, their Director, the very next day, thanking us for all our gifts and the wonderful bags full of useful gifts! I’ll send photos to each location, and a CD to Mark Pinker, for submission of a picture or two to The Sentinel, Patriot News, District 7390, our website (Karen Gunnison) as well. Mark does a great job at this effort! Many thanks to all involved! Bets Clever, Carol Lennon, Dan Monken, Bill Harkey, etc…: We all need more practice at this!! (That’s a compliment!). Our Carlisle High School Cheerleaders attended again this year, August 2010

New, 2010-2011 Member Directory is now published; many thanks to Dean Glick for his efforts. Measures have been taken so that all members get an issue, regardless of attendance at the meetings when it was distributed. Also, Annual Dues statements are forthcoming; FYI. If any of you Active Members don’t get one of these (or my monthly Rotograph Newsletter, let me know! So, if you hear of somebody that doesn’t get the Rotograph via e-mail, like Past Pres. Dan Monken, let me know (I think he has me blocked…??). Can’t figure this case out! A Rotary insert in State College Newspapers last week was brought to me by Tom Houf last Thursday. 16 pages, insert magazine size! Copies are being mailed to all of you, all District 7390 Club Presidents, and District Governors. Best publication I have ever seen on a brief issue of a local paper. I’m checking with The Sentinel” for a similar effort. FYI. Our Carlisle Rotary Golf Tournament is on Monday, September 27, at The Carlisle Country Club. Brochures are at the door when you sign up. Please take some and pass them around! It is our Club’s best fundraiser!! Mountz Jewelers provides great prizes, coordinated by Jim Hughes and Jen Negley and our Golf Tournament Committee. Lastly, please remember to “sign in” when you attend our meetings! I don’t think our attendance % numbers at District monthly reports reflect the persons I count at every meeting… (I’m guilty of this, by sometimes early arrival..) Page 1

Board Meeting Reminder: Next Thursday, 8/12, back room, Elk Club, 11AM. The following month, September, the Board Meeting will be the 3rd Thursday‌.District Governor Will Kirkpatrick II will be our Board and Club Meeting Guest! Pls. holler before any Club meetings, if I need to call on you for announcements, etc.

BRING A GOOD FRIEND/ PROSPECTIVE MEMBER TO OUR CLUB LUNCHEONS! It's the easiest way to expose our Club to possible new members! We must stay focused on this mission. This is key to the projects we undertake, and in keeping our District 7390 banner where we feel it should be!

Rotary International News Winds of Change What an amazing world! Advances in technology are happening so quickly that they cause constant changes in our businesses and professions. Yet about one-third of the world’s population is still living at a subsistence level with little change in their lives. It is a stark contrast and a cause for concern. Rotary has both a distinguished heritage and a bright future. My primary task as president is to enhance the vitality and viability of Rotary clubs and to enable them to succeed in the midst of societal changes. This is an important task because it is the clubs that address and alleviate the root problems of society and thereby make the world a better place. Wind of change was a new and significant phrase when I was a Rotary Scholar in South Africa in the early 1960s. It is serendipitous that the phrase that was first publicized in my host city of Cape Town is now applicable to Rotary as we contemplate the August 2010

changes in society that dictate some corresponding changes in our organization. The phrase is now better known as winds of change. We are currently enjoying a culture of innovation at Rotary International. We have the ability to look at all of our programs and practices to see if they can be improved, even as we steadfastly maintain our core values. I hope many Rotarians will take advantage of this opportunity to identify and implement improvements in their clubs and districts as well. Rotary lives and breathes in our 33,000 clubs, and it is the clubs that improve lives by Building Communities – Bridging Continents. If we succeed in helping clubs to become Bigger, Better, and Bolder in the next year, then it will be clear that the best days of Rotary are still ahead. We are fortunate to be Rotarians! Together, we can make the world a better place! Ray Klinginsmith President Rotary International
