BRING A GOOD FRIEND/ PROSPECTIVE MEMBER TO OUR CLUB LUNCHEONS! It's the easiest way to expose our Club to possible new members! We must stay focused on this mission. This is key to the projects we undertake, and in keeping our District 7390 banner where we feel it should be!

Rotary International News My fellow Rotarians, Shortly after the earthquake hit Haiti in January, Rotarians began making phone calls and sending emails to discuss how they could help. When Rotary International posted its first story on Rotary’s immediate relief efforts, Rotarians took this discussion online. The very first comment about the story expressed what so many Rotarians were thinking: “If they begin sending Rotarians over to help in any way, please let me know if I can help.” This plea was multiplied over the following days on Rotary’s website and our social media pages. Rotarians also reported what they were doing: collecting thousands of dollars to fund ShelterBoxes and Aquaboxes, contributing to Rotary’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, and organizing ways to transport food, supplies, and

June 2010

On the ground in and around Haiti, Rotarians were also busy. Local Rotarians helped distribute the ShelterBoxes to some of those left homeless. Rotarian Claude Surena, a physician, took 100 injured earthquake victims into his home, which he managed to turn into a makeshift hospital despite the damage it had sustained. District 7020 established a relief fund, flew in planes loaded with medical supplies, and strategized to provide assistance in the weeks following the disaster. And it is in those weeks – and months and even years – that Rotary can make its greatest contribution. Rotary is not a disaster relief agency, but we are very good at long-term recovery. After all the media attention dies down, Rotary will still be there on the ground – in Haiti’s case, with 17 local clubs and thousands of willing partner clubs. If Rotary’s recovery efforts in Bangladesh, Honduras, Indonesia, and countless other countries are any indication, Rotarians will be in Haiti long after public interest has faded and the media have

honor, and appreciate your letting me serve. Thank you. A look back at the year: We started off with the Roast Beef Dinner. What a great success. 2,000 meals served, a new record. Then the golf tournament was held and it raised a substantial amount of money as well. Finally, we held the auction at our Christmas dinner to benefit the Kenya Dental project, and that raised a record amount as well. A very good year for fundraising in a difficult environment. moved on. In this month’s Global Outlook, you can learn more about Rotary’s success in helping communities and countries rebuild after a disaster – not only replacing what was lost but making it better as well. The Rotarian passion for helping those in need, combined with our perseverance and grassroots presence, will continue to bring hope to those whose lives have been torn apart by disaster. Our response to the tragedy in Haiti manifests Rotary’s concern and desire to help those less fortunate and offers evidence of what Rotary does best: give service. Thank you all for what you are doing

Club News President Jeff’s Corner Dear Rotarians, Its hard to believe it has been a year as your president. Time flies! I have really enjoyed this June 2010

We achieved the best large club award from district again, the fourth year in a row. This represents the work of all of our membership in an assortment of ways. It shows that we have a well balanced club, doing all the right things. Our exchange student, Luc, has been a pleasure to have with us this year. An excellent student, she will go far when she gets back home. If you ever get sick in Italy, ask for Luc to be your doctor! We had wonderful students of the month. We should all feel honored to give them the recognition they deserve. What great students. We sent 5 students to the Rotary Youth Leadership camp at Messiah College. We also have a student representing us as our Rotary Ambassadorial student in Argentina this year. We also sponsor our two Interact clubs and our Rotaract club. We held our Essay contest and awarded a cash prize to the student who won and had him speak at our club. And I have had the privilege of presenting our senior student leadership awards, and the fine arts award at South Middleton, Big Spring and Carlisle High Schools. We held our Christmas in July at One and Two West Penn and it was a great success. Our Park cleanups have made them more usable, and we once again put the flowers out on the square. We placed picnic tables at the Carlisle Pool as a continuation of our district service project. Thus marks the fourth straight year we have done something for the borough of Carlisle.

We continued to be a leader in the district in contributing to the Rotary Foundation by contributing about $13,000 this year. What a great club. All of you help to make it a club I am proud to belong to. I’m certain that I left something off this list. My apologies if I did. Yours in Rotary, President Jeff Annual Roast Beef Dinner—July 1 All members who can possibly attend the July 1 Roast Beef Dinner are expected to attend. All of our members purchase 10 dinner tickets, and many, many pass on the word to make this a great fundraiser. We sold 2,000 meals last year; we may go for 2,100 this year (record)! New members are blessed by being in our “Clean-Up Committee” upon conclusion (that’s how you meet our members!). We realize it’s a holiday weekend with possible family vacation difficulties. But many members attend with their kids, or grandkids. Messiah Village—SAGE Each year Messiah Village sponsors an award called SAGE which honors and recognizes seniors who are “savvy, active, growing, and enlightened.” If anyone would like to nominate a fellow Rotarian for this recognition please contact Juan.
