Sandra Rupert YBGT brings in 131 golfers honored for volunteerism all for the good cause of raising funds for youth The 2013 Freres Lumber Company Youth Benefit Golf Tournament, held August 3rd at Elkhorn Valley Golf Course was a smashing success. The final tally on the proceeds for scholarships and funding assistance for youth programs are not yet available, but event coordinator Mike Long states he is confident that it will show an increase over last year’s event. 131 players enjoyed a wonderful day on the course in ideal weather. After a morning round of golf at Elkhorn Valley the players; volunteers and guests enjoyed a wonderful Tri Tip lunch hosted by Santiam Memorial Hospital. “We have been successful thanks to the wonderful support of our sponsors; a team of super volunteers; and a great group of golfers,” said Mike Long. This year’s winners are as follows: Men’s low gross—Pacific Sanitation team with a score 16 under par Men’s low net—John Sendy’s team Mixed low gross—the Sword Logging team with a score 13 under par. cont. on page 12
For fourteen years now Sandra Rupert, the postmaster of Gates has been coordinating the Gates Community Night Out. This event is in conjunction with the National Night out that occurs the second Tuesday of each August with the goal to bring neighbors together and to learn about the various services available in the community. On Tuesday evening the bays at the Gates Fire hall were filled with tables of food and neighbors chatting. Many local agencies were represented with educational presentations and displays. And this year Sandra Rupert was honored by the Gates Volunteer Fire Department for her years of dedicated service to the community with a beautiful plaque and the bays echoing with applause. Thank you Sandra for all your efforts!
Mill City man now on Terrorist Watch List over tax refund dispute
James Hanson of Mill City is now on the terrorist watch list, “all because I haven’t got my income tax refund back yet,” he said. Hanson filed in for his modest return online on February 28, and on March 1st he received an email stating his application was accepted. His state refund came through promptly, but the federal refund was another story. According to Hanson in 2011 someone else unintentionally used his Social Security Number on their tax returns causing a series of red flags in the system. After he jumped through the hoops with credit reports and card fraud investigation, James Hanson eventually got his return that year and thought it was now all water under the bridge. Hanson started to inquire about the status of his return in March with the same investigator who handled his case the year before. “Five times I called, and each time I was told it would take 30 days to process, then I’d see the money deposited directly into my ac-
count, but after each thirty days still nothing was there, I was getting frustrated,” he admits. On July 17 he tried again and got the same response, so he kept trying. He spoke with three different people that day, each looping him around to the next, and with no clear signs of help he says he got irritated. “I told the third guy that he might want to record the conversation.” Then Hanson said the magic words: “How would you like an IRS building blown up?” Less than two hours later as Jim Hanson pulled into his garage two federal agents came rushing in. “They asked me if I knew how to build a bomb, and set me down for some questioning, and now I’m on the terrorist watch list.” He says he never intended to build a bomb, and knows nothing about them, just got frustrated and the words spilled out. Hanson still hasn’t gotten his money back, but when he does, he plans to go fishing on the ocean for the day.
